TOP ER INSIDS! TIP

LA RAMBLA OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Barcelona's most famous street stretches from Plaça Catalunya to Port Vell and attracts millions of visitors every year. Next time you stroll along this pedestrian boulevard keep an eye out for some of these less well known spots and local tips.

Boqueria Bargain o'clock Colourful exotic fruits are piled up next to seasonal specialities, and market stalls abound with a symphony of delicious foods; sweets and nuts, fresh fruit, cheese and delicatessen products. Here's our local tip – get there before closing time at 20:30 and you'll be offered some incredible prices, especially for freshly cut fruit and smoothies that can't be kept for the next day. Three for the price of one? Go on then!

A dragon on La Rambla You may have found yourself wondering why there is a Chinese art deco dragon hanging on the edge of La Rambla 82, near the Miró mosaic. The dragon is holding a fan and is perched above an umbrella, which gives us a good clue. It used to advertise an umbrella shop that was located here at the height of the "Japonisme" movement in the 1860s.

Roman Tombs Take a left into Carrer de la Canuda towards the top of La Rambla and not only will you lose the crowds but you’ll also find an unexpectedly tranquil and intriguing square. The tombs below belong to a Roman necropolis that was once outside the city walls. You can also enjoy an iced lemonade on one of the square's shaded café terraces.

Café del Opera One of the oldest establishments on La Rambla, its history began as an 18th century tavern where carriages would depart towards Zaragoza and Madrid. During the next century it became a “Chocolatería”, and when the Liceu Opera House was established it took on its current identity. Let its Modernist interior take you on a journey through time. MONTSERRAT Attracted by the idea of a fun and adventurous day out? Then why not head to Montserrat mountain, located just 50km from Barcelona, and famous for its Benedictine monastery, breathtaking views and excellent hiking trails. DISCOVER MONTSERRAT

MUSEUM & GALLERY

The first thing you'll notice on arrival at the foot of Montserrat mountain is its unusual rounded rock formations. If you look closely, its shapes appear to resemble faces, mushrooms and other distinctive forms that have earned different parts of the mountain its various nicknames.

As their private collection of art grew, it became evident that a larger space was needed to display it for the public. The museum building was constructed by the Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1929. It now contains over 1,300 pieces ranging from Egyptian icons in the Archaeology of the Biblical East collection, to classical paintings by El Greco and Caravaggio, and modern masterpieces by Chagall, Miró, Dalí and Picasso.

MONTSERRAT MONASTERY One of the most influential places of worship in Catalonia, it remains an important centre that is currently home to 80 Benedictine monks. Its origins date back to 888 CE when it was the simple hermitage of Santa María. It became an independent abbey in 1409 and its wealthy benefactors allowed the development of magnificent interiors and religious art works. The famous "black Madonna" statue can be visited here. 30

BARCELONA CONNECT

HIKING ROUTES The highest peak is Sant Jeroni, at 1236m above sea level. Paths lead to small hermitages such as Sant Benet, natural caves and spectacular viewpoints over the nearby countryside. More advanced mountaineers will also find plenty of good spots for rock climbing.

LA MERCÈ Barcelona's largest week-long street party, from the 22nd-25th Sept, will give you a taste of all the folkloric traditions that add a touch of magic to life in Catalonia. Each district has its own annual Festa Major festival, and La Mercè is the Festa for the whole of Barcelona. Celebration, fun and community spirit all rolled into one!

Correfoc

Gegants & Capgrossos

Spectacular, exhilarating and unmistakably Each district of Barcelona and most Catalan pagan, the “fire-run” is a highlight of any Festa towns have their own “giants” and “bigMajor. Diables, or devils dance through the heads”. The giants are made with a tall hollow streets brandishing fireworks that spin around structure carried on someone’s shoulders a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. and topped with a papier-mâché head whose Stand well back if you're not wearing long features give each character a unique identity. sleeves. Barcelona is as they dance around each other.

Castellers

in full on party mode.

A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the tower base is considered stable. 34

Bestiari Representations of real and mythical animals also take part in the traditional Festa Major dances and processions. Barcelona’s creatures include the lion “El Lleó”, the regal eagle “Àgila de Barcelona”, and the “Drac de Barcelona” dragon. Several Barcelona districts have their own dragon, such as “Gaudiamos” in Gràcia, who resembles Gaudí’s iconic dragon in Park Güell.

FEATURES

CATALONIA'S EXPLOSIVE TRADITIONS

DIABLES, OR DEVILS, DANCE THROUGH THE STREETS BRANDISHING FIREWORKS THAT SPIN AROUND A LONG POLE

La Sardana The traditional folk dance of Catalonia is simple and yet intricate. Participants hold hands in a circle (keeping an eye on their bags in the middle) and take light steps as they point their toes and raise their arms. They are accompanied by a cobla of musicians with reed instruments, brass instruments and a string bass who play traditional medleys.

Gastronomic specialties Catalan cuisine follows two calendars – the seasonal cycles that provide fresh local products at different moments throughout the year, and the festive calendar. Long donut-like churros dunked in thick hot chocolate will boost your energy levels during the Mercè, whilst gourmets may be more drawn towards the autumn delicacy of setas, or mushrooms. 35

IL VIAGGIO A REIMS Opera

Rossini's last opera returns to Barcelona's prestigious opera house with an ambitious scenic montage by Emilio Sagi. Its narrative follows a group of aristocrats and courtiers who are travelling to the coronation of Charles X and stop at the Giglio D'Oro spa in the Lorraine region of France. Arias and concert pieces for fourteen voices introduce themes which Rossini would later reincorporate into Le Comte Ory three years later in 1828. Musical direction is by Giacomo Sagripanti, who won an award for Best Young Musical Director at the International Opera Awards in London last year. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down C/ Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by the locals.
