MOORCROFT POTTERY WHAT TO LOOK FOR Moorcroft is always sought after by our customers and we often have pieces in our Quality Collection. The Moorcroft line was started by William Moorcroft when he was hired to work for the pottery manufacturer James Macintyre & Co Ltd in 1897. Soon, he was in charge of the company's art pottery studio, mainly due to his innovation and skills as a maker of earthenware. Once put in charge, his first release, Florian Ware, gained great acceptance and won him an award for his efforts in 1904. Resentment grew between the employer and the master craftsman during the following years, and his studio was closed down in 1912. Undeterred by this setback, Moorcroft set up his own company and was soon producing pottery once again.Â
While auction prices fluctuate, Moorcroft remains popular with a broad range of buyers. Generally, while recently-made pieces are widely collected, and some of the modern limited edition pieces or those from the Sally Tuffin era can bring substantial sums, it is the Walter and particularly the William Moorcroft signed and designed pieces which are most sought after. These are distinguished by date, pattern, shape, size, ground colours and by glaze type. Pieces with condition issues will also meet a more measured response. Early patterns in the Art Nouveau/Arts and Crafts taste are typically the most highly regarded, the later Walter Moorcroft designs generally less so.
