PORTRAIT MINIATURES Always causing a surge of interest when they come under the hammer at BHA, portrait miniatures have a fascinating history. Developed from the techniques employed in illuminating manuscripts, portrait miniatures became popular at Court from the 1520s. Conveniently portable, wealthy subjects would wear portraits of the monarch as a sign of loyalty. From about 1650 onwards fine miniatures were executed in vitreous enamel and in the 18th century, watercolour on ivory became standard medium. However, by the mid 1800s, photography offered an affordable likeness and there was no further call for painted miniatures.

FAMOUS ARTISTS EARLY PERIOD: Jean Fouquet, Jean Clouet, his son François Clouet & Jean Perréal in France. Samuel Cooper, Nicholas Hilliard and Isaac Oliver in England. Hans Holbein the Younger and Lucas Horenbout from the Netherlands. 18th CENTURY ONWARDS: Cornelius Høyer and Christian Horneman in Denmark. Richard Cosway, George Engleheart, John Cox Dillman Engleheart, Andrew Robertson, George Beaumont, William Behnes, Thomas Frank Heaphy and Anne Mee in England. Nicolas de Largillière, François Boucher, Jean-Marc Nattier, and Jean-Germain Drouais in France. Andrew Roberson in Scotland. http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/h/a-history-of-the-portrait-miniature/ http://portrait-miniature.blogspot.com.au/
