ROYAL CROWN DERBY Royal Crown Derby is one of the few original fine bone china manufacturers that still remains in Britain today and beautiful pieces regularly come under the hammer here at BHA. Production began some time before 1750, when the Huguenot, Andrew Planche, established the first china works in Derby. King George III recognised the uniqueness of Derby porcelain in 1775 when he granted the factory the rare honour of being able to incorporate a crown into the backstamp. Much later, in 1890, Queen Victoria also gave Crown Derby her seal of approval not only by awarding the royal warrant, but also by granting the title "The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company".
WHAT TO LOOK FOR PAPERWEIGHT STOPPERS: Gold is used on first grade items and Silver is applied to all "Seconds" pieces which are not of good enough quality. Â The backstamp is also scratched on these pieces. BACKSTAMP: Royal Crown Derby carries a date mark to identify the year of manufacture. From 1938, roman numerals have been used - the only exception being the 2000, which had a special mark of two interlaced 'M's. 'X' and 'V' have been used twice as date marks - to avoid confusion, 1901 & 1904 are accompanied by 'England', while the roman numerals used for 1942 & 1947 are accompanied by 'Made in England'. Â
