CRANBERRY GLASS WHAT TO LOOK FOR Cranberry glass is perennially popular at BHA and we have some stunning examples pass across our auctioneer's tables.
COLOUR: The pieces often have a deeper hue by the neck of the vase or near the edge of the bowl, indicating where the glass was blown from.
Cranberry glass (or gold ruby glass as it was known in Europe, or Rubion Oro as it is known by glass workers) is made by adding gold oxide to molten glass. The glass is then typically hand blown or molded. One of the earliest known examples is the Lycurgus Cup, a 4thcentury Roman glass cup. The craft was lost and then rediscovered in the 17th century Bohemianperiod by either Johann Kunckel in Potsdam or by the Florentine glassmaker Antonio Neri in Italy. The most popular production period was in Britain in the 19th century.
QUALITY: Check for chips, ash, or unpolished areas. Cranberry glass is craftproduced, one piece at a time, and each delicately hand-blown item should be smooth and polished. DATE: Antique pieces will be harder to find. Producers from the 19th century include Thomas Webb, Stourbridge, and Mary Gregory. Newer cranberry glass is affordable and makes a great decorating piece, but be sure to know which you are buying. Brand names from the 20th century include Fenton, Hazel Atlas, Indiana Glass, and Hocking.
