RENÉ LALIQUE Lalique glass is instantly recognisable with it's opalescent, high relief designs and it proves popular when it comes to market at our Quality Collection auctions. René Lalique (1860-1945) started out as a freelance jeweller but by 1902 he was using the jewellery casting process called cire perdue, or lost wax, to create molded glass plaques at his small glassworks at Clairfontaine outside of Paris. By 1921, Lalique had opened a high-volume factory at Wingen-surModer, in Alsace where he designed over 200 vases that were produced using a press-molding technique.
However, with this popularity and mass production, came copies. WHAT TO LOOK FOR COLOUR: In addition to the signature white frosted opalescent glass, Lalique produced items in green, blue, amber and red. The red glass is frequently reproduced by modern copyists as it is it is much sought after by collectors. QUALITY: Examine the quality of the detail. In a genuine piece the detail is delicate and distinctly opalescent in the high-relief areas. WEIGHT: Authentic Lalique glass is heavy in the hands, whereas fake ones are a lot lighter in comparison.
