Director’s Welcome
Director’s
Welcome The annual medical report for Warwick Sport finds us in excellent health. The ongoing financial crisis we are all experiencing has been weathered well, even though costs have risen significantly and membership has shown a modest dip, but remains above 10,000. Our success is best judged by performances in sports competitions, by the diversity and number of our courses and the availability of facilities to cater for the aspirations of individuals eager to be active outside of the club structure. We believe that we have been able to expand our offering with respect to all of these areas of our operation. Worthy of particular note is the fact that four of our clubs, rugby, lacrosse (men’s and women’s) and table tennis have all been promoted to the premiership leagues in their chosen sports for next season. Personal success has also been evident this year among our sports men and women.
Warwick Sport
Facility provision has also seen improvements. At Cryfield five pitches have had a sophisticated irrigation system installed, permitting a significant improvement in grounds maintenance and a consequent major improvement in the playing surfaces. On the River Avon the patient Rowing Club members have been rewarded, after many years planning, with a new boathouse! Around campus new trim trails are being established, with an outdoor fitness centre and new tennis and netball courts near the Lakeside residences planned. Despite the recession, we are expanding our offering to our University community to make us the most active campus in the UK by 2015. Watch this space as we launch the ‘Warwick Active’ campaign later this year. We are also eager to encourage ever greater use of our sports facilities by our local community. We aspire to be leading the way in our region as the premier centre of sporting activity. Much achieved, but great opportunities ahead. Join us in the exciting future of Warwick Sport!

Sports Officer’s Welcome
Officer’s Welcome
Hi, I’m George, your Students’ Union Sports Officer for the year ahead. Ahead of you lie some of the best years of your life, and I hope with it some of your best sporting moments. We aim to provide an experience for everyone during their time at Warwick; testament to this aim is the huge number of sports clubs, and the brilliant facilities, we have on offer. With over 75 clubs, I can guarantee there is a sport for everyone. Every club offers a different level of competition, a different atmosphere, and most importantly the opportunity to meet a diverse group of like-minded people who you would have never met otherwise. Clubs all compete at different levels, so whether you want to compete nationally against other universities or just play your sport in a casual manner, it’s possible – and the KPMG leagues give you the opportunity to play sport recreationally!
Warwick also has many brilliant facilities to offer to you, regardless of your sporting experience. With a 13m competition climbing wall, fitness suite, running track, pool and 3G playing field all situated on campus, you’re bound to make use of what we have to offer, especially given the fantastic price which these facilities are available for.
Throughout my three years at Warwick, I have been involved in sport on a daily basis. Whether it was training, competing or socialising in term time, or skiing in the Alps over the vacations, I owe my best memories of Warwick to the sports clubs I joined. With our full calendar of events, from Sports Fair and taster sessions in Freshers week through to the Varsity fixtures later in the year, I hope you make sure you don’t miss out and get involved as soon as you can!
George Whitworth Sports Officer
www.warwick.ac.uk/go/sportatwarwick
As a fresher, I joined the Lacrosse club and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. I had no previous experience of the sport, but like most of the clubs at the University, neither experience nor ability are essential in becoming an active member of a club, opening up your university life to people of different years and courses, and a vibrant social scene (most clubs will hold a weekly social in the Union at ‘Pop!’). The majority of clubs also conduct sports tours throughout the year, which could see you end up on the beaches of Portugal and Spain or the mountains of France and Austria – or further afield! Many clubs don’t just focus on the sport either. Joining clubs often presents opportunities to fund raise for charities, engage with the local community, or earn yourself coaching or refereeing qualifications.

The university achieved accredited status in October 2009. The IFI model is driven by developments in four key areas of fitness provision, underpinned by research conducted in 1998, which has led to a holistic approach, ensuring that you should expect a truly inclusive experience when visiting an accredited inclusive fitness facility.
● Inclusive Fitness Equipment
● Staff Training
● Inclusive Marketing
As a consequence you will find accessible facilities, equipment that is appropriate for the vast majority of disabled people, a positive culture and staff attitude and a facility that understands the value of a diverse and inclusive customer base.

Warwick’s The Place to Be
The University of Warwick has over the years invested a significant amount of money into a capital development programme that adds value to the student and staff experience. In having this fantastic facility stock and partnership with Warwick Conferences it has enabled the University to capitalise on developing a successful events programme on site. This type of business allows the University to maximise the opportunities to develop strategic partnerships, generate income and create positive regional and national exposure, which in turn has a positive impact on the student and staff experience by reinvestment into our programmes and developing a profile around the Warwick brand.
l l l
The Sport Relief Mile U23 International friendly tournament between England, USA, Sweden & Norway. The Premier League Youth International Tournament.
The above are just a few examples of the clients that the University has been working with over the last 6-12months. In working with Warwick Conferences we are looking forward to increasing the number of clients we work with and the ambition is to turn some of them into strategic partners, for some long term outcomes. In delivering and growing this client list we would like to open up the opportunity for members of Warwick Sport who are thinking of pursuing a career in event management or even just have an interest to come and get involved!
Warwick’s The Place To Be
13
Over the past few months we have had some very positive news around the 2012 Olympics. The University of Warwick has now been confirmed as a training site for the Olympic Football tournament in 2012 and we will during a period of 6 weeks host some of the World’s most talented players here on campus. They will stay in the accommodation on site and will train at Cryfield on the same pitches that you, our members, use for competitions and training. This will see the University linked with the City of Coventry Stadium who have been selected as a host city complex for the Olympic Football tournament. With this news the University has invested in a new irrigation system at Cryfield which will allow us to improve and maintain the pitch standards throughout the year. Looking back over the past year the University has hosted some fantastic events and the list is growing each year, providing opportunity to raise the profile of the University and the facilities we have available. Below is a snapshot of some of the clients we have worked with:
The Football Association England Women’s National U17 Training camps. The NIKE Premier Cup. Doncaster Rovers Football Club. The Football Association England Men’s National U19s Training camps (prior to competing in this summer UEFA European Cup in France). St Johnstone Football Club. The Premier League Referees National Training venue. Host to the Sells Goalkeeping Academy. The Glenn Hoddle Football Training Camp. Kelly Holmes Athletics Camp BUCS National Tennis Finals The Birmingham County Football Development Education Programme.

What is Warwick Sport? Warwick Sport is a collaboration between the Department of Physical Education and Sport and the Students’ Union, this joint venture enables all members of the University Community to benefit from a more co-hesive, cost effective and user friendly approach to sport. The key ideas behind the collaboration is to increase opportunities for every University member to engage in sport at their choosen level.
What is the cost? Warwick Sport invites all University members to apply for membership of Warwick Sport at a flat annual rate of £45. Warwick Sport members can then benefit from a significantly enhanced range of classes, treatment, training and club memberships, taking advantage of services provided by the Students’ Union and the Department of Physical Education and Sport. Each individual Sports Club membership is £5 (excluding Pick and Mix which is free). University members who elect not to join Warwick Sport can still have unlimited access to Sports Centre facilities by buying a £2.35 ‘pay and play’ day pass. More than 20 ‘pay and play’ visits a year will lead to an automatic upgrade to full Warwick Sport membership for that year.

Representative Sport - BUCS The University of Warwick is one of 157 higher education institutions across the UK to compete in BUCS. The BUCS sporting programme is available to the 2.3 million students across the UK. Over 100,000 students regularly compete in BUCS competitions, leagues and events. BUCS delivers 50 sports to these students and universities and organises 150 individual final or championship events each year. The seasonal programme begins at the start of the academic year in October with the National Surfing Championships in Newquay; and continues until the following July with the final events including, cricket, archery and athletics competitions. Over 70 Warwick teams compete in BUCS team sports and competitions each year and the finale for many is the BUCS Championships. There really is no better feeling than donning your Warwick kit and representing your university. We had a great deal of success in the 2009/10 season with, amongst others, men’s rugby, men’s & women’s lacrosse getting promoted into the premier league. Currently ranked 21st, the University has ambitions to become a top 15 sporting institution.
Right To Play Right to Play are the official Warwick Sport Charity; and throughout the year clubs and individuals raise money for this very deserving and worthwhile charity in a number of different ways. To recognise this success, alumni Leo Matlock won Right to Play’s inaugural ‘Red Ball Award’. Warwick Sport plans to continue this relationship with Right to Play over the coming year and help raise even more money to help support the fantastic work they do. received a TASS scholarship, which has helped me greatly financially with clothing, equipment and travel for my sport. After starting Warwick this year they have helped increase the value of my scholarship to help me get as much benefit as possible by bringing core services such as Strength & Conditioning and Physiotherapy and making them available to me on Campus as well as organising nutrition workshops and dealing with any other issues I had.
