I GREW UP IN OC BACK IN THE LATE 50S AND 60S, AND I CAN VIVIDLY REMEMBER LIVING amid miles of orange groves and avocado trees. And when Disneyland opened its doors, my family was among the first 100 or so guests invited to opening day. It was fun and free in the days of drive-in movies (some of my best stories) and drive-up eateries, where gals on roller skates would roll up to take your order while all of us kids would check the drive-up to see who showed up on Friday night. Of course, those days are long gone. If today’s kids could only imagine their lives without cell phones and texting, Facebook and computers, how would they exist? Most TV, if you were lucky enough to even have one, was black-and-white, and you might get to stay up and watch one of your favorite programs, like The Ed Sullivan Show, where famous rock-n-rollers like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones got their big breaks. Yeah, they were cool! With those days of long-gone come many old memories, but along the way I’ve also made some new ones, which have now become what I like to call my “faves.”
“There really is no place as unique as Orange County. Nothing quite like home.”
And now, it is my time to finally unveil my Best of Orange County list to you, all my loyal readers. Best Italian is Caneletto at Fashion Island; their vegan soup is to die for. Best breakfast spot is Rose Cafe in Corona del Mar. I especially love it on Sunday mornings, when I can take the long walk with my pup and sit on the patio, visiting with all my neighbors. Best lunch spot is Charlie Palmer at South Coast Plaza. Love those Brussel sprouts—and I still enjoy my cookbook, The Art of Aureole, that Charlie personally signed for me a few years ago when he invited me to a private luncheon. And my favorite of all places to dine for dinner—with a great steak and artichoke—is Bandera’s in Corona del Mar. Yum and the atmosphere is delightful. Best bar, too! My very favorite grocery store is, of course, Whole Foods in Fashion Island. I love their produce, and I can never get out of there—it’s like a day trip! My favorite nightspot with the family is the Fashion Island Cinemas. I can have it all, wine in a glass, some good nosh, and my own roomy recliner. I’m getting old, but, these days, this really is my absolutely most favorite night out on the town. And finally, what I most love about Orange County is just a ride on my beach cruiser along any of our gorgeous beaches. From San Clemente to Huntington Beach, they all are beautiful and that is a constant. I’m reminded daily that I am blessed to live in one of the most beautiful spots in the country. Enjoy this issue, as you will notice a few awesome changes and beautiful additions I credit to our talented editor-in-chief. Read her note for all that’s new, exciting and happening you need to know! Cheers!

WHEN I LIVED IN HOLLYWOOD AND SPENT MOST OF MY TIME ON THE WESTSIDE,
photo: Tony Florez
I drove almost 20,000 miles a year. Now, anyone who commutes through Los Angeles knows that moving even 20 miles often equals an hour of driving—minimum. Looking back, I’m not sure how I managed, especially with a small child in tow. (Thank goodness for backseat television screens and Bose headphones—or, as I call it, survival mode for parents on the go!) Then, a few years ago, when I started commuting from Hollywood to Newport Beach, it hit me: I was accustomed to the drive, but not the constant visual of pristine waters and blue skies from Orange County making the slow, but inevitable, transition to the dark-gray haze of my then stomping grounds. Day after day, mile after mile, car after passing car—it all terrified me. Then, I realized that I, too, was part of the problem. Never mind the endless wasted hours on the road, I was contributing to the smog, the poor air quality, and the unending traffic. Alas, although this realization was not the only reason I relocated permanently to Newport Beach, it was reason enough, and last year I proudly report that I drove a far more satisfying— and responsible—4,000 miles. And let’s just say this whole ordeal started my sincere, active interest in protecting the Earth and preserving its natural resources.
“Home isn’t just the structure we live in, but our everyday environment.”
So, last winter, when I was invited to attend a Lunch and Learn on going “green” led by technology leader Wayne Inouye, who spoke about the LEED home that he and his wife, Shannon, built in Corona del Mar, you can bet I attended with gusto. The building details involved were interesting, but most inspiring was the passion and commitment the couple and their collaborators funneled into it. Call it a true passion project; so much in fact, the Inouyes are actually building another green home in CdM (page 57). Having had the pleasure of touring both these spectacular eco-minded properties, I tell you that it’s precisely these types of homes that give life meaning—and the emotional resonance that drew me to Orange County nearly three years ago.
I am not alone in my quest for a more sustainable future, and it’s reassuring to discover others, like the Inouyes, who are similarly invested in environmental efficiency. This issue also features our first-ever home interiors section. Don’t miss the exquisite details of another feature on a sprawling Shady Canyon residence (page 66). With it, designer Lynn Pries has brought a little piece of Italy to Irvine, including some of the most exquisite handpicked mosaic marble I’ve seen. And while the occupants of our feature abodes are most lucky indeed, so too am I, and everyone else living in Orange County, where “welcome home” takes on an entirely new meaning. Here’s to another year in paradise!

1 Jenn Thornton writer Always one to pay attention to the small details that transform a house into a home, Jenn Th ornton draws on inspirational designers to bring a sense of comfort and character to her own home. “I’m obsessed with Jay Jeff ers—he’s the master of eclecticism and achieving that “collected home” look. Not only is his taste level exquisite, it is also witty, and the skill with which he mixes old and new pieces together appeals to my “little bit of everything” aesthetic sensibilities. I love spaces with character, so midcentury homes and cottages appeal to me, as do postwar abodes with smaller footprints and an obvious sense of utility (a la Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonia style). After all, form is nothing without function.” Jenn’s top-three can’tlive-without handbag items: her MAC Viva Glam V lipgloss, a book (“always, and the real-deal, not digital”), and her Warby Parker reading glasses.
Italy, where she currently lives and works, the South of France, with its charming towns of Antibes and Nice, and a little closer to home, Laguna and San Clemente.
2 Virginia Fay writer Traveling through Greece was a magical and whirlwind experience for Virginia Fay, as she soaked in the country’s exquisite beauty and rich history, creating some unforgettable memories along the way. “Seeing the sunset in Santorini, in both Fira and Oia, has to be one of my most memorable travel moments to date,” she says. “Th ere are no words to adequately describe the scene as the sun bathes the whole island, with its mass of multicolored houses stacked atop one another, in soft, glowing light, not to mention the beauty of the water and Caldera itself.” Virginia’s top-three spring hideaway destinations: Florence,
4 Debbie Lavdas writer A true lover of art, culture and theater, Debbie Lavdas deeply appreciates the opportunity to see amazing talent and performances close to her home. “I feel so lucky to live just 15 minutes from Segerstrom Center for the Arts and to be able to catch such top-notch shows year-round—and who could ask for more beautiful venues than the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Segerstrom Hall?” Debbie’s top-three musical performances: Cirque de la Symphonie, where Pacific Symphony performs in sync with Cirque performers each spring, the always wonderful Wicked, and War Horse, with its intense and powerful visuals.

3 Robert E. Palmer writer Robert Palmer takes the journey of a lifetime to the paradise of truly magical Tahiti and tells of his experience with its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and local hospitality. “Circumnavigating the entire island of Bora Bora in a storm on wave runners was a trip, and [an] amazing experience,” he recounts. “Stopping half way along the way in a downpour and riding up on wave runners to the Matira Beach Restaurant was a crazy experience, as well. Amazing owners, French cuisine and a bottle of great wine, and then back off into the rain to complete our trip.” Robert’s top-three must-have travel items: a good book, his iPod, and Bose noise-cancelling headphones.
5 Ana Maria Martinez-Stumpo designer Furniture designer extraordinaire, Ana Maria Martinez-Stumpo knows exactly when and how to push the envelope when it comes to furniture making. Her passion for design and creating that began at a young age has now blossomed into a successful and fulfi lling career. “My father was and still is my inspiration and motivation behind the furniture designing and making,” she says. “As a teenager I was fortunate enough to help my father in some major installations, like Th e Bellagio, as an afterschool activity…[spending] quality time with my father, and being able to see that fi rst-hand truly inspired me to pursue what is now not only my career, but [also] my true passion.” Ana Maria’s top-three home essentials: a comfortable large sectional for the living room, a chair with personality, and a comfortable master bed. 6 Melinda Serra designer Designer and color expert Melinda Serra knows how to create a comfortable home with warmth and character that is easy to live in by picking perfect colors. “Many people get hooked on ‘the current color craze,’” she says. “I’m able to differentiate each person’s home, even if the same color is used, by using different shades and tones of the same color and, most importantly, integrating each client’s personality into their space. Melinda’s top-three locales for finding the perfect paint: Benjamin Moore, which has a wide selection of great colors, Restoration Hardware, which showcases great hues that look great in any light, and Farrow & Ball, for its depth and rich pigments.

REST

Marking its namesake’s first museum exhibit in Los Angeles, the LACMA presents Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic. Simply stated, Alexander Calder revolutionized modern sculpture with his kinetic works featuring flat pieces of painted metal connected by wires that move beautifully in the air. His inventions likely flowed from his love and study of mechanical engineering, including his work as a hydraulic engineer and draughtsman. His giant structures, known as stabiles, provide iconic images adorning many a modern building.
MARCH
Few dance troupes have enjoyed the acclaim and long-term success of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre—let alone having served as an ambassador for American culture around the globe. Founded by Ailey in New York City in 1958, the troupe has helped popularize modern dance by injecting the genre with African-American participation. Known for its amazing artistry, passion and sheer strength, the group will continue to reimagine American dance when they take the stage at Segerstrom Hall.
Highly acclaimed and meteoric-rising playwright Samuel D. Hunter’s latest work, Rest, will enjoy its world premiere at South Coast Repertory. Directed by founding partner Martin Benson, Rest tells the story of the closing of an Idaho nursing home with just three remaining clients, one of whom has wandered off in the middle of a blizzard, while the others follow in search of the lost.

Super Diamond returns to the Belly Up in Solana Beach. The band, which currently tours both the U.S. and abroad year-round, puts on a show that is, quite simply, one of the best things you’ll see this year.

Aerial View COMBINING PERFORMANCE WITH MUSIC, CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE IS SURE TO STRIKE A CHORD. When is the last time you had your mind blown at the symphony—as in, your jaw dropped, your eyes widened, your palms started to sweat, and you were perched on the edge of your seat? Enter Cirque de la Symphonie, which will give performance art a whole new meaning during its May 1-3 run. Truly something to see, if you catch just one Pacific Symphony Orchestra (PSO) show this year, this is it.
The rare and rousing concert pairs the wondrous world of Cirque theatrics with music from PSO’s full orchestra, all set within the beautiful, acoustical walls of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. You’ll indeed gasp, ooh and ahh, as performers dangle by their feet from hoops swinging high above the stage while the orchestra hits just the right pitch for each mesmerizing high-flying act, all bravely executed without nets or wires. The flashy, vibrant show is an alluring contradiction on many levels, even down to the evening’s outfits—the eccentric and whimsical Cirque costumes and vivid red ribbons in stark contrast to PSO’s elegant black ties and white coats. Leading Cirque de la Symphonie, Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman charmingly engages the audience throughout the show. “Wonderful music has been written to accompany visual movement and great storytelling,” he notes. “As the conductor, I’m looking forward to being a part of a night of visual excitement and brilliant music-making.” While Kaufman conducts the show’s music, a swirl of acrobats, contortionists and strongmen—quite stunningly, in fact—perform set choreography to classical masterpieces and memorable contemporary selections. Among the talented Cirque performers are world-record holders, Olympians and gold-medal winners from international competitions. The special spring show marks PSO’s celebratory 35th anniversary season, as it furthers its legacy as the largest orchestra formed in the United States in the last 40 years—one widely, and deservedly, recognized as an outstanding ensemble on both the national and international scene, as well as in our own burgeoning cultural community. Cirque de la Symphonie runs May 1-3, at 8 p.m. PacificSymphony.org

Organic, Naturally
A DC dweller-turned-Colorado transplant, Sarah Villafranco fled a stable, yet stressful life and career as an ER doctor to pursue her passion for natural beauty with skin care line Osmia Organics. Here, she shares with bask how Colorado inspires her to be good to both the planet and herself, the standard of luxury she strives to achieve, and why she’s now helping others through soap rather than standard medicine. What drew you to Colorado, and how does its environment affect Osmia? Oh, Colorado. I think there was a mistake on my birth certificate. I think I was born here, not in DC. These mountains, the red soil, the evergreens, the insane blue color of the sky—they all remind me that we need to care for this beautiful planet, and keep me humble about how tiny we all are. This place moves me to choose happiness, to live fully, and to love what I do. Colorado attracts some amazing people, several of whom are my co-workers now—wonderful women who share an appreciation of nature’s splendor, and a passion for all-things Osmia. And, if you’ve smelled any of our products, there is a lot of olfactory inspiration drawn from this part of the world as well. When did you start to feel that a career in traditional medicine was not for you? I began to have inklings of it shortly after my mother died, when my second daughter was three months old. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the work—I always felt grateful to be able to help in critical, scary moments of peoples’ lives. But I never felt like I had time to connect with people in the way I wanted—encouraging them to eat healthy food, exercise, care for the planet, and find the joy in life’s everyday moments. Then, when I took that first soap-making class, I knew what I wanted to do. It’s not medicine by Western standards, exactly, but Osmia inspires people to savor tastes, smells, touches, nature, and feelings more fully—a kind of medicine that could make [many] people a lot happier in their lives. When are you happy with a product—what does it take to meet your standards? Our products need to be effective, feel luxurious and contain ingredients that are good for your skin and environmentally aware, all the way down to the packaging. “I work very much from the gut,” reveals Annabel Inganni, the founder and creative force behind budding homewares brand Wolfum. Indeed, the entirely self-taught talent with proclivities for fashion and a passion for technology has, in the two-and-a-half years since launching the madein-L.A. line, cultivated an enthusiastic audience for its handcrafted goods featuring a kaleidoscope of colors and chic, geometric motifs.
Like Inganni herself, Wolfum’s following is drawn to conservative elegance with contemporary leanings. “Originally the idea was to create tablecloths and napkins to honor the tradition of setting a table in the modern home,” says Inganni of Wolfum’s wondrous array of domestic adornments, now including everything from textiles and tabletop accessories to cornerstone décor like pillows and trays. “I love beautiful pieces and mixing elements—flipping design to make it sort of ‘off,’ in a sense, for a lucid, organic result.” Although the Wolfum roster touts a SoCal-influenced stamp with architectural lines and eco-sensitive woods, its creator’s East Coast upbringing inspires the preppy-laced pieces’ kicky-cool finish. Churning out two refined, yet unfussy collections a year, Inganni promises audacious arrivals for spring—look for wares in bright, saturated 80s-inspired hues with a strong showing of black. Perfect FORM Yegang Yoo, designer and founder of IMAGO-A, knows all about minding her business. After all, when the Parsons alum fled fashion circles in New York, London, and Milan to launch her own line of leather handbags in 2011, she chose the Latin moniker meaning “image” for its psychological overtones. Now, thoughtful design is a prominent fixture in Yoo’s collection of sculptural, three-dimensional forms that take cues from her unabashed ardor for architecture. The brand’s Prism series is a true gem, with surfaces mimicking prismatic crackling and jewel-like silhouettes featuring a sumptuous mix of materials, such as stripe-embossed leather harmoniously mingling with smooth lambskin and cowhide. This season, expect minimalistic shapes, geometric accents, hexagon- and pentagon-shaped wallets with bi-color combinations, and carryall practicality—all her bags are compartmentalized, with the Prism Clutch being particularly innovative. “It’s a bit bigger than the Prism Mini,” Yoo shares, “and can hold all of your essentials, plus a book or a Kindle, a pair of glasses, and gloves.” Siblings, like the Prism Envelope Clutch, combine beauty and utility to chic effect with two separate sections—one for an iPad. While all pieces enter the luxury segment with handcrafted construction and top-quality skins, none carry on with superfluous flourish. Imago-a.com

Hot Concept With the launch of its BMW i—new ultraefficient rides for the upwardly mobile—the German automaker is really on a roll, inaugurating the innovative series with the BMW i3, a purpose-built electric car chiefly made of carbon fiber. This monetarily attainable maiden will arrive at Sterling BMW, in Newport Beach, this May as “the first viable German-engineered electric vehicle that can compete with the popular Prius,” reveals the dealership’s Center Operator and General Manager Preston Minor. “Produced soup to nuts in a sustainable way, with cutting-edge battery technology and a production line fueled by wind energy, we couldn’t be more excited to have such a cool vehicle in our lineup to give the environmentally-conscious customers of OC a better option.” Along with the i3’s expected luxuries (it is a BMW, after all) come a compact silhouette; a low console granting passengers a slide-through option with exit strategies from either side of the car; and sustainable materials, including a wood-trim dashboard crafted from ethically-forested eucalyptus. Later this summer, look for the i3’s electrifying eco-driven sibling, the i8, to debut in limited quantities and—strap yourself in—a price hovering around $150,000. Truly high speed. SterlingBMW.com “These cars will appeal to OC drivers who want to move into the electric or hybrid market, but don’t want to sacrifice safety, performance, or prestige.” –Preston Minor, Sterling BMW

In the truest spirit of giving, Orange County’s charitable set gathered together for Second Harvest Food Bank’s “No Lunch” Luncheon, held Nov. 26 at Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County in Irvine, to raise funds and help nourish those in need. True to form, the benevolent affair celebrating Second Harvest’s 30th anniversary raised more than $100,000 to provide about 300,000 meals for the hungry in Orange County. The whole scene, including 350-plus guests who lined up for a modest lunch of soup and bread provided by Antonio Cagnolo, owner of Antonello
Ristorante, recalled one experienced daily by those struggling to receive sustenance locally. As meals were received, recipients viewed the moving photography exhibit 30 Faces of Hunger and Hope. And talk about giving thanks! The luncheon, which was presided over by Master of Ceremonies Ed Arnold of KOCE-TV PBS SoCal, saw Second Harvest Board Chairman Mark Danner present the Founder’s Legacy Award to Albertson’s and The Orange County Register for their outstanding work in helping feed the hungry. HANDCRAFTING HEIRLOOM FURNISHINGS WITH ARTISAN APPEAL, HERITAGE BRAND THOS. MOSER BUILDS THE CASE FOR AMERICAN-MADE.

Tom Moser attributes his transition from college professor to founder of Thos. Moser—the familyowned furnishings business he launched 40 years ago in a Grange Hall in Maine—to “historical accident.” A happy accident too, as Moser has since elevated a once hardscrabble sideline into a bona fide heritage brand bearing his name, involving his wife and four sons, and churning out some of the most exquisite craft in America. And he did it much in the same way Americans always have in this country—with gritty determination, by hand. Tom Moser
Who inspires you? George Nakashima. Not that I emulated his designs, but I emulated his process… He taught me that you could take a historical form and impose upon it your own aesthetic and come up with something relevant. Talk about simplicity in your design. If there’s any ornamentation it’s in the joinery itself, the deconstructivist work, and how the wood is celebrated. Describe signature Thos. Moser design. There’s no concealment. Everything is an honest reflection of the material, and the way it’s put together. There are no veneers... [The work] is authentic. Good design ought to be universal, to travel across time and space. Is there a movement back toward handcraftsmanship? Absolutely, particularly American made.

HANDCRAFTED Thos. Moser customizes and handcrafts each piece to lasting effect. Made from the finest material, furnishings feature a multitude of architectural and design influences—most notably, a modernized take on Shaker style, and a “strong synergy” between the traditional and modern that imbues each piece with heirloom quality and multigenerational appeal that inheritors cherish. Finished pieces are then signed and dated by their artisan makers—a fitting coda to a process that, though no longer widely practiced, has thrust Thos. Moser into elite ranks of American design. And it all started in the hands of one man.

Inspired by the fashion label Etro, Ana Maria chose fashion-forward material and accents to refurbish this classic sofa. With a vision to give the piece a “totally different personality,” her preliminary rendering of the vintage sofa concept served as a great visual throughout the creative process. In raw form, “this piece has great bones,” adds Ana Maria. Next, are the details—or, “applying the bling”—which included the nailhead- and silver-leaf applications shown here.

HIGH-END FASHION MEETS VINTAGE FURNITURE WITH ONE HAUTE SEAT!
It’s the time of the year for that season-appropriate mantra, “Out with the old, in with the new!” But when it comes to furniture, how about: “Out with the old, in with the (new) old!” That’s precisely what I was thinking with this century-old vintage sofa. An antique French Provincial piece used by its original owner at his farmland in the suburbs of Chicago in the early 1900s, the sofa then made its way to a vintage boutique shop in Los Angeles, where I immediately fell in love with it and saw its potential for a second wind.
As a furniture designer and manufacturer, I know antique furniture is made with great bones and structure. So this classic piece, characterized by excellence, maturity and enduring appeal, won my heart immediately. The sofa was in great condition for its vintage age with its original brocade-like fabric, and the hand-carved wood frame was unlike almost anything produced today, unless it’s custom-made and has never been refurbished or repainted.
After searching for the right material and pattern to marry with this vintage accent, I went forth with “fashion forward” as my inspiration. After all, to me fashion is the expression of one’s personality, and when it comes to designing and creating furniture, I strongly believe “personality” is a must. So, in order to revive this sofa as a present-day masterpiece, I approached it with a contemporary twist through flora and fauna motifs in daring colors. I also selected an inspired Etro print in 100-percent pure silk from Italy. The handcarved wood frame in a black antique finish with silver leaf at the carvings creates contrast and depth. Just as fashion accessories finish an outfit, I accessorized by using a metallic braid trim and added some bling with a polished chrome nailhead at the perimeter. It looks brand new, right?
And yet, it still has that vintage appeal. In fact, it’s truly a case of high-end fashion meets vintage furniture. Only one question remains: Who gets the first sit? PHDesignInteriors.com 52

A simple, classic modern chair in any shade of green— especially done in pairs—infuses a space with restorative comfort and a natural sense of style. As the color of balance and harmony, and with an array of different shades, green adds energy to your space. t might have been Shannon Inouye’s 12-year experience as a Girl Scout leader that triggered her and husband Wayne’s decision to build a green home—or, quite possibly, it was the influence of their daughter’s Girl Scout Award project coordinating an Earth Day Environmental Fair. Plus, “Our daughter had been encouraging us to build an environmentally-friendly home for years,” says Wayne, a technology leader, “and her career revolves around environmental issues, renewable energy, and climate change.” Either way, having a net-zero green home was top priority for the Inouyes. “We feel ‘green-building’ reflects the ‘zeitgeist’ of our culture, to be sustainable, to ‘reduce, reuse, recycle,’” adds Wayne.
So, with planet-conscious passion, the Inouyes set about looking for a new property to build in Corona del Mar. Explains Wayne, “Corona del Mar has great schools, an ideal climate, a unique, village charm…and there are no Mello-Roos.” It was bittersweet selling their home in Shady Canyon, but, reflects Shannon, “Although Shady Canyon is a beautiful neighborhood, and we truly enjoyed living there, we wanted to downsize, economize, and do so with a green home.”
frequency functionality, and all the paints, stains, and finishes have low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). “We love the way [the house] makes us feel,” Wayne says. “Aesthetically, it is warm and inviting, easy to maintain, and durable.” Referring to the residence’s completely airtight envelope built with a germicidal, advanced air filter purification system that adapts to the need of the structure, Wayne sighs, and says, “[It’s] peaceful, quiet, and healthier.”
Despite slower construction and fewer LEED homes being built when the Inouyes broke ground on their progressively planned abode—during the economic downturn—the greatest stumbling block for the couple was pioneering such an undertaking. And yet, Shannon recalls, “It never once crossed our minds that we wouldn’t be certified as Platinum. Our biggest obstacle was researching new products, deciphering which ones were truly green versus ‘green-washing’: weighing aesthetics versus LEED points versus costs. We spent way more on certain features that were not necessary. For example, our insulation would’ve been more appropriate for Minnesota or Palm Springs weather.”
Now, the Inouyes, along with Steed, have parlayed their skills and passions into a new labor of love—the current building of a second LEED home (for resale), also in Corona del Mar—and hindsight is coming in handy. “We learned so much building the first one, we figured the second one would be even better: more efficient, less expensive, and faster to build,” Wayne says. “So far, we are seeing all of these savings happen. [And] we believe all homes in the near future will be built similar to what we are building now.” The result: a low-maintenance house for all seasons, designed to save costly resources, energy, and water.
Home (Stern)
But with the sourcing of builders, architects and designers with sustainablebuilding experience a bit challenging, the couple called in professionals who shared their like-minded ardor for all things green. Luckily, “The real estate agency we worked with, Surterre Properties—a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) member—introduced us to our amazing builder, John Steed, and our creative interior designer, Rachel Hulan,” Wayne says. “We found our architect, Jeff Jeannette, through the USGBC website and Build It Green, another green-building program [promoting compatible construction practices in California]. All three members of our team are truly passionate about green building, and each brings unique talents to the table.”
The Inouye’s goal was to build a LEED® Platinum-certified, net-zero home that would ultimately produce more energy than it consumed, and be less costly to maintain. “In the year that we have been in Corona del Mar, we have significantly reduced our expenses,” notes Wayne.
Every detail of the Inouye’s custom-built home—from livability to location— was carefully considered. Enter its lot: a strategic selection made possible with the committed assistance of real estate agent Merle Tabor Stern, and chosen not only for its proximity to town, but also for the potential of its efficient orientation. “The lot’s east-west direction allowed us [to] maximize solar exposure for excellent morning light and heat into the home, as well as fulltime solar coverage of our roof-mounted solar panels,” Jeannette notes. “And, operable windows on the south and north walls capture cool ocean breezes, passively cooling the home.” As the designer, Hulan was also resourceful in selecting the home’s durable, reclaimed and recycled materials—most are made locally, or at the very least, in the U.S. Top of mind was always efficacy, and as such, the craftsmanship is custom and top-notch. Flooring materials consist of engineered strand bamboo or tile made with pre- or post-consumer content—except the kitchen, which features an anti-bacterial and biodegradable linoleum counterpart. ou’d expect the replica of a bona fide Papal Villa—in this case the storied Relais La Suvera, now a five-star resort in the hills of Tuscany— to be grand. But livable, too? A far greater challenge, but one that Laguna Beach-based interior designer Lynn Pries, whose previous undertakings include designing new homes for clothing retailer Mossimo in Emerald Bay, and Angels’ pitcher Jim Abbott in Corona del Mar, embraced with a passion that produced, arguably, the most singularly stunning property in Shady Canyon. In order to recreate the homeowners’ experience at the resort that inspired their sprawling 10,777-square-foot residence, which enjoys an arresting array of panoramas, it “…needed to be authentic and stand the test of time,” explains Pries, who, along with architect Richard Krantz and builder David Close, set about achieving the intended vision.
But it would take stamina to complete the faithful translation of Old World architecture and craftsmanship—not to mention, three years. But the process, which involved six tons of steel, extensive earth moving, and a bureaucratic wade through strict Shady Canyon architectural guidelines and restrictions, would not produce yet another rustic farmhouse look for the exclusive enclave. Rather than rustic, this residence “displays a romantic, formal expression of sophistication,”
Pries explains. “It’s not gaudy or ornate; the details are authentic.” And, it must be said, a result of her meticulous and judicious approach to its overall design.
“I believe in authenticity, attention to detail, and quality,” says Pries, who not only “dove into research,” visiting Italy and poring over 50 books and numerous other resources solely for this project, but also sourced its artifacts and materials herself. “For example, I located antique lighting fixtures and furniture, used reclaimed brick and old stone, and incorporated other features, like the old doors in the TV room.” All details—whether it’s the home’s hand-troweled plaster wall finishes, antique marble flooring, custom handcrafted doors featuring silver-finished hardware, artisan-applied finishes or timeworn antiques—can be traced back to Pries’ dogged study and painstaking pursuit for the project. But when considering the home’s features, its designer refuses to play favorites. She does, however, express particular fondness for its materials, tower, grotto, and entryway, sharing, “Let’s just say, I love this house in its entirety. Is that a cop-out?” Hardly. Built around a three-level courtyard, where gorgeous alabaster peacocks stand sentry, the home exudes Pries unerring affection. Inside, all seven bedrooms (the abode boasts a dedicated bedroom level with master suite) and

All is, of course, completely by design. “I strive to design homes that both ‘belong’ in the environment in which they’re constructed, and, for people in that home to feel like they belong in that space,” Pries notes. “I want my designs to inspire emotion of ‘belonging,’ like they’ve been there a while….” And certainly, to stand the test of time.

any Southern Californians have made the hop to the Hawaiian Islands. Their warm, beautiful waters, awe-inspiring mountains and views, friendly locals, diverse culture and relaxed lifestyle provide ample rewards. Now, imagine all those enticements, amplified and substantially enhanced, taking shape as a land with waters even warmer and more beautiful; with shallow protected reefs reflecting magical multi-colored shades of blue; abundant swimming, snorkeling and diving; volcanic mountains offering extra dramatic backdrops; and welcoming locals speaking not only their native language, but also English and French. Although Polynesian culture is also the root of much of Hawaii’s culture, its lifestyle makes Hawaiians appear almost frantic by comparison. More surprising, not only is this land—located just three hours beyond Hawaii by air and easily accessible via direct flights from Los Angeles—absolutely real, it’s called Tahiti.

bask beyond town, Vaitape—an area first settled by early Polynesians during the 4th century. From there, many hotels provide transportation (some of the best resorts, such as the Four Seasons and adjacent St. Regis, offer private boat transport for their guests—a 15-minute trip). But a quick cab ride also can get you to almost anywhere on the island in under 20 minutes or so. Indeed, its entirety is circumnavigated in about an hour. Although Vaitape and its 5,000 inhabitants may not stun, it contains more than 50-percent of the islands’ population, and has a number of small, touristdriven shops selling locally-made goods, such as necklaces, bracelets, and other items carved from wood and stone. Also plentiful are ever-present pearl stores selling famous Tahitian black pearls. While not actually black, these pearls are among the most prized and beautiful in the world: coming in various shades of gray, silver, pink, green, gold, and cream, and a combination of all those colors. These are cultured pearls produced by the culturing process, which means that the nucleus of a small pearl is placed into an oyster, then left to grow while suspended in the ocean for a period of two years, creating the larger black pearl. Beyond the beauty of Bora Bora is a host of activities. Water sports include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, wave running, jet boat tours, windsurfing, and kite boarding, while land-based adventures feature 4x4 safaris, parasailing, deep-sea fishing, shark and ray feeding, helicopter flights, the “Lagoonarium,” helmet dives, scooters, the crazy-but-fun underwater “Aquabike” and stunning hiking and climbing. Of these pursuits, snorkeling and diving with schools of sharks—both the Black Tip Reef and Lemon varieties, as well as Manta Rays—is an unforgettable experience in clear, warm waters. As for hospitality, two of the world’s finest island resorts—the previously mentioned Four Seasons and St. Regis—are located next door to each other, on an atoll on the opposite side of the island from Vaitape, thus providing magnificent views of the island itself. The Four Seasons features 100 stunning overwater bungalows, complete with separate living rooms; personal back porches and swim platforms; large sunken tubs and separate rain showers; and cloud-like beds, including some of the best pillows on the planet. There are also seven large on-land villas, especially good for families. Three restaurants provide excellent dining, with the Sunset Bar availing mind-numbing views of Bora Bora along with exceptional sushi and fusion dinners. The immense property also features a world-class spa; fitness facility; multiple lagoons, complete with man-made coral reefs and a flotilla of fish; an infinity pool, cabanas, and pool bars; shops; tennis and volleyball courts; complementary kayaks and paddleboards; and a knowledgeable, well-trained staff. All kinds of diving and snorkeling trips, as well as all of the other island activities, are also available. FourSeasons.com/BoraBora

Beyond (Tahiti)
Indeed, if there is a place that truly deserves the accolade “paradise,” Tahiti nears top of the list. Its romantic images are almost otherworldly, and its people warm, thus it recently called me back for a third time, though not for a family vacation, but my own marriage. Having traveled the world, I could think of nowhere more beautiful, romantic, and peaceful for such a trip. Tahiti is actually the largest island of a group of atolls in the Society Islands of the southern Pacific Ocean, with other main isles including Moorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, and Huahinne. Volcanic activity millions of years ago left the islands’ with stunning mountain peaks, protective coral reefs, and a virtual Pantone chart of azure-colored waters. Though claimed as a colony of France in 1880, it took until 1946 for its residents to be legally authorized as French citizens, and today consists of fewer than 200,000 inhabitants.
The St. Regis offers similar accommodations, but on a slightly smaller and possibly “hipper” basis. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban were among the resort’s first guests, spending their honeymoon in the 16,000-square-foot Royal Estate, a walled-off compound. Of note is the resort’s signature overwater restaurant, the Lagoon by Jean-George Vongerichten. The resort also has Sushi Take, Te Pahu for local fare, and Far Niente Ristorante for Italian cuisine. Of the island’s other hotels, better options include two InterContinental properties and the Bora Bora Nui Resort. StRegisBoraBora.com
By far the most famous Tahitian island is Bora Bora, and its signature mountain, Mont Otemanu, dominates the skyline from any part of the island. Author James Michener believed it to be the most beautiful island in the world, so, perhaps not surprisingly, Bora Bora is the site of the finest hotels in Tahiti. Most visitors arrive in Bora Bora via its airport, which is located on its own atoll, Motu Mute, easily reached by a ferry regularly transporting guests to the main
To many, the more beautiful island than Bora Bora—and, to me, perhaps the most beautiful in the world—is Moorea, the so-called “sister island” of Tahiti, sitting just 12 miles off its coast. There is nothing like it anywhere, with jagged mountain ridges and vast jungles separating a series of beautiful bays. Looking at the hills, you almost wait for the sounds of trampling dinosaurs followed by crumbling trees, a la Jurassic Park. Though Moorea actually attracts more

visitors than Bora Bora, many of who are Tahitians, it is less known in the States. Though covering just 51 square miles, the island—which features dramatic mountains and both black and white beaches among the finest on Earth—is but a short flight or 30-minute ferry ride from Papeete. Once there, travel by car, scooter or “fun car” (an odd little three-wheeled vehicle). Or, get quickly to your hotel via a courtesy shuttle or taxi. Moorea offers all of the same activities as Bora Bora, but in addition boasts Moorea Green Pearl Golf Course of Polynesia, a Jack Nicklaus design that opened in 2007. And, while the “pro shop” is more of a “Caddy Shack,” the course itself is beautiful and well maintained, featuring a few holes on the water and a number creeping up into the mountains. Moorea has a number of fine hotels, but frankly none of the majesty of the top hotels in Bora Bora. Still, among the best is the Sofitel Moorea la Ora Beach, the Moorea Pearl, and the Inter-Continental. The Sofitel, which was remodeled in 2005, is the only hotel with a view of Tahiti and sits on Moorea’s best lagoon and beach. The Moorea Pearl, a close walk to the adjoining town of Maharepa and its restaurants and shops, offers a number of overwater bungalows and land-based rooms, some of which have their own pools. While the bit more isolated Inter-Continental is the home of the Moorea Dolphin Center, a popular tourist attraction that boasts a diverse array of water sport activities. Sofitel.com, SMPHotels.com/Resort/Moorea Far from the beaten path of Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea lay a number of beautiful, smaller Tahitian treasures. Huahine gets little press, but its beauty is similar to Bora Bora and its mountains compare to Moorea. This place is oldschool Polynesia and is a beautiful spot to get away from it all. Taha’a is also a very small island, but for years it hosted one of the best (and still nice) resorts 80

in Tahiti, the Le Taha’s Private Island & Spa, a small upscale venue. Some of the overwater bungalows here have amazing views of Bora Bora, while still maintaining privacy and providing both luxury and fine dining. It’s a place I truly loved staying years ago. Another less-traveled island is Raiatea. Although nearly the size of Tahiti and located between there and Bora Bora, it is vintage Tahiti, promising a wonderful, island-authentic short stay. LeTahaa.com My favorite way to visit Tahiti is aboard the Paul Gauguin cruise ship. For years it was the world’s number-one small ship when owned and operated by Regent Cruise lines, the now independently-owned and -operated vessel is still one of the very best, and an amazing way to see Tahiti, especially for the first time. With only 320 guests and more than 200 crewmembers, it offers luxury on a small, yet impressive scale, with a typical cruise leaving weekly from Papatee, lasting seven days, covering Taha’a, Paul Gauguin’s own private motu, Raitai, Bora Bora, and Moorea. The ship has three restaurants, including one operated by a Michelin-starred chef, and features daily entertainment, often focused on Tahitian culture; lectures; multiple bars and venues; live music; on-deck events; a pool and spa; and a great marine deck with water sports activities, the most important being great diving throughout the islands. After 30 years of diving all over the world, this is the single best and easiest diving experience I have experienced. Eat a gourmet breakfast, walk to the marina, hop in a Zodiac boat with the dive crew and your gear, and be at an amazing dive site within 30 minutes—every day. Heaven. Visiting Tahiti is an opportunity to experience and appreciate richness, diversity, and beauty well beyond yet another trip to the Grand Hyatt in Maui. So the next time you go exploring on Expedia to plan your summer vacation, consider Tahiti. If you do, your first Mai Tai is on me.

There aren’t many places in the world that
manage to make you simultaneously feel like you’re on an exotic adventure yet right at home. But Corfu, with inhabitants who exude an inherent sense of hospitality matched in charm only by the scenery of the island they call home, is just such a place. Located off the coast of Albania and surrounded by the Ionian Sea, Corfu is an island paradise like no other, where the word “lush” doesn’t begin to describe the greenery covering the island, and the water gives “crystal clear” a whole new meaning. While other parts of Greece, like Athens, cry out for jam-packed itineraries (read on), Corfu’s charm centers around innate relaxation, a state inspired simply by being on the island. Finding a way to while away the days is easy, especially when faced with enticing choices like, “Should I go kayaking today or stop by an ocean-side restaurant for a Greek salad?” The answer, quite simply, is both! After all, the climate in Corfu produces moderate temperatures and seemingly ceaseless sunshine that only makes lounging in the sun and swimming in calm, warm waters all the more inviting. Between the sun-and-sea excursions, there are also boat trips and ATV tours galore. Of these options, speeding around the island on an ATV is one of the most enjoyable ways to get the lay of the land, not to mention scope out some pretty breathtaking views. Heading to the top of the island yields coastal vistas of 84

The Caryatids at the Acropolis in Athens are a striking, stately vestige of the ancient Greek culture.
deep-green mountainsides in contrast with striking aqua-blue seas stretching all the way to Albania. Another tantalizing prospect in Corfu is the food. Forget about Greek food you’ve sampled before, because authentic native cuisine enjoyed in Greece is a whole new experience—one fit for Zeus and Apollo. You’ll find feta everywhere, of course, but a feta that is fresher, softer and more flavorful than any you’ve previously tried. The kalamata olives are similarly delightful, simple tzatziki and pita feels revolutionary, and everything comes together perfectly in dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves). And we’ve just begun to tackle the appetizers. Without extolling the virtues of this food of the gods too endlessly, suffice it to say that vegetarian or carnivore, salad-lover or seafood enthusiast, your taste buds are in for a real treat. After you’ve had your fill of seaside sunshine and local cuisine in Corfu, hop a ferry to the mainland and make your way to Athens, a historic hub with a surprisingly agreeable ambiance. The imposing nature of sights such as the Acropolis, including the Parthenon, Caryatids, and more age-old ruins, not to mention the Olympic Stadium, invoke a reverence in even the least historyminded traveler—as for history buffs, well, the place is like Disneyland. Either way, strolling the trellis- and tree-lined streets, browsing the Athens Flea Market, and stopping for equally delicious street gyros or fine dining fare make for a very pleasant sojourn indeed.
Venturing to the top of Corfu island yields coastline views of stunning azure waters.

The startling red of the sand at Red Sand Beach perfectly complements the cobalt blue of the water for an extra-saturated beach view.
Beyond (Greece) After spending a day or two soaking in Athenian culture, there’s no better way to wrap up a Grecian journey than by heading to the island of Santorini. Home to the world’s most photographed sunset, Santorini, with its exterior facades awash in white set against a sea of cobalt blue, is a feast for the eyes at any time, day or night.
There are multiple towns on the island, but Fira is the largest and most amenity-filled. Staying in its town center provides easy access to a number of delicious restaurants, many with seaside views that may well make you forget about the food entirely. Although dining and shopping here is enticing, the real magic of Santorini is found during off-the-beatenpath explorations. Rent an ATV and wind your way along cliff-side paths for unbeatable views, and you’re likely to happen upon a private beach that seems as if it was created just for you. Or set out more purposefully to visit one of the island’s most unique features: the red-sand beach near Akrotiri. With red cliffs towering above and an earthy ruddy hue of sand providing a bed for clear-as-glass water, this cove is idyllic. And then comes sunset. While the island’s sun-soaked panoramas and multicolored houses clinging to its sides is nothing to scoff at, when the sun begins to sink below the Caldera (the volcanic island directly across from Santorini), everything in sight is bathed in shades of gold, amber, lilac and coral, until the entire scene approaches enchanted.
For the ultimate spot to enjoy these scenes and wrap up your trip, head to Oia, a tiny town famed for its blue-domed buildings and houses that are stacked atop one another and frequently framed by bougainvillea. Located at the tip of the island, the views from this town define the word entrancing. Leaving any part of Greece is never easy, but taking in a sunset here is the perfect farewell to a week in paradise. 86

BASK WELL
Wellness (Intro)
On the beach across from Cass House Inn, Cayucos, CA.
Beyond (Cass House)
by virginia fay | bask well
Comforts of Home CURL UP AT CASS HOUSE IN CAYUCOS TO EXPERIENCE THE TRUE MEANING OF HOME AWAY FROM HOME. Cozy as your grandmother’s house but infinitely more elegant, Cass House Inn and Restaurant is a B&B of the highest order. Step over the threshold and you’ll be greeted with a cheese plate, wine, and a crackling fireplace—all of which combine to make you feel as though you’ve dropped in on an old friend whose sole purpose is to make you feel at home. Co-owner Grace Lorenzen does everything in her power to create just that atmosphere. The beauty is in the details as much as the big picture: Every part of breakfast, from the pastries to the bacon to the butter, is handmade from scratch. Likewise, bath products are homemade in Northern California and the majority of furnishings were custom-created for Cass House. And the luxury linens? Personally laundered by Grace and her husband.
Beyond (Cass House)
Surrounded by a quarter-acre garden designed by Grace’s sister and modeled after classic English gardens, the plants are all native, and grown by a local nursery. Further, much of the restaurant’s food derives directly from what is cultivated right on property, supplemented by other locally available goods. Everything is organic and seasonally inspired, so your five-course tasting meal acts as a sort of harvest calendar on plate. Perpetually influenced by local produce, the chef aims to make every meal he serves an absolute original, not to mention healthy and delectable, representation of the greater Cayucos food community. Beyond the food it so bountifully provides, Cayucos is as picturesque a setting as you’re likely to find for a B&B: the tiny town epitomizing quaint charm. Made up essentially of just one street, its real draw is its proximity to the ocean. The Inn, in fact, is set just 20 feet from the seaside, thus more than half of its six rooms provide at least partial ocean views, while others look out over the garden and the town.
Like the rest of the Inn, rooms are appointed to create a perfect mesh of old and new: antique furniture with flat-screen TVs, and canopy beds with Anichini linens. Rich drapes complement overstuffed armchairs adorning window sides and terraces, while in other spaces stately fireplaces and cast iron soaking tubs beckoning you to curl up, relax, and stay awhile—as intended, of course.
Inspired by their own extensive travels, the Lorenzens aim to create, in Grace’s words, “an escape for travelers looking for a place to slow down, to linger over a two or three hour dinner, read a book in the garden, take a stroll on the beach, or just enjoy their room.” And relaxation is truly the name of the game at Cass House, as there’s really no need to venture any distance from its charming confines during your stay. So whether on a cozy couple’s retreat or an introspective solo vacation, Cass House caters to your every comfort, making you feel like family. CassHouseInn.com

spanish revival FINDING THE WAY TO WELLNESS IN GALICIA, SPAIN
Wellness
photo: RL Fotografías
Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
Ferrol seaside
Tucked in the northwest corner of Spain is a place where seekers of wellness for both body and soul have long ventured for strength and solace—even the Neanderthals, who discovered that the spot produced healing waters that bubbled up from the ground. Then came the early Celts and the Romans—groups who also grew to understand the curative properties of the mineral springs dotting the landscape of what is now called Galicia.
While the ethnicity of Galicians has evolved over time, their Spanish bastion of therapeutic wellness remains a place where those in search of a sublime experience that feeds the soul, find it, especially around Easter and during July, when many Christians flock to walk the Way of St. James—a pedestrian pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where James, one of the 12 apostles is believed to be buried. His feast day is celebrated on July 25, but pilgrims walk the Way year-round, often finding spiritual enlightenment (as well as physical comfort in the soothing mineral waters) during the course of their journey. Throughout Galicia, signs indicate the Way; some have been here since medieval times, when the pilgrimages began.
Wellness
But first comes the journey from California to Galicia—and it takes some doing. Find the Way to wellness by first visiting Barcelona (American Airlines’ One World alliance group will get you here from LAX in about 15 hours). Spend a night or two at the sleekly modern Hotel Omm, soak in the exalted Antoni Gaudi architecture (Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are steps away from that hotel, with the incredible La Sagrada Familia cathedral also close by), and dine above the city at Dos Cielos, the touted one-Michelin-starred restaurant atop the ME Hotel run by talented twin brothers.

photo: El Correo Gallego
Once your jet lag has leveled, take the short flight to Santiago de Compostela and pick up a rental car to easily rove Galicia’s beautiful landscapes. And what better way to let the healing begin than by spending your first night in a hospital? Though now a classy five-star hotel, the Parador Hostal dos Reis Católicos was once the Royal Hospital. Opened in 1509, just across the plaza from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, “the oldest hotel in the world” is nonetheless gorgeously appointed, filled with historical artifacts, and a fascinating place to stay, where indulging in Galician classics, like pulpo á feira (octopus and potatoes in olive oil) paired with one of the region’s crisp Albariño white wines, means doing so in Dos Reis, the fine-dining restaurant occupying the space formerly the hospital’s morgue.
photo: Jenny Peters
Wellness From this address, take in this UNESCO World Heritage city on foot to see the Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture in its Old Town, once a Roman burial ground. You’re sure to spot the Way followers rejoicing on their arrival at the cathedral. Exchange high fives and then prep for your own pilgrimage into Galicia’s world of wellness.
It begins just outside of the city center, at the Hotel A Quinta de Auga, a Relais & Chateaux property devoted to luxurious hydrotherapy. The building, previously a paper mill built in the 1700s, has been transformed by architect and owner Luisa Lorenzo into an oasis of cool. Listen to the river outside your room’s window and wander amid surrounding greenery, then don your swimsuit and head to the co-ed spa’s incredible hydrotherapy area, also designed exclusively for the hotel by Lorenzo. Glide into the pool to start the unique water circuit, moving from zone to zone as strong jets propel you forward while pummeling your muscles. It’s exhilarating, and unlike any other water spa element anywhere else in the world. Finish up in the Turkish hammam and feel so relaxed it will be hard to move.

bask well
Further south is another time-honored spa hotel, Balneario de Mondariz, a veritable palace located on the outskirts of Vigo. Built in 1873, this health resort is stunning, particularly its Palacio del Agua (constructed in 2005), a considerable complex featuring a giant domed roof, massive archways, and, naturally, restorative hot springs-fed pools of carbonated water containing calcium bicarbonate and iron to aid in balancing both metabolism and the nervous system. Also at this famed countryside sanitarium-turned-luxury resort is golf, horseback riding and, if you dare, the opportunity to partake in a queimada cleansing ritual, where an old Galician spell designed to keep bad spirits away is cast over a cauldron filled with distilled wine, herbs, coffee, and cinnamon is then lit on fire. According to legend, as you drink the mixture, the spell frees your soul from evil and binds you to the friends joining you in its consumption.
Once fortified, continue on to Ourense, where Romans took the waters, Moors (and later, Norsemen) repeatedly sacked the place, and finally, in medieval times, the city was constructed. With several hot springs options along the Miño River (many of them pozas, which allow you to bathe in outdoor waters), you’ll be hard-pressed to choose just one, but after a dip, be sure to visit the area’s old town, where the As Burgas fountain marks the original Roman baths. And do stop at the popular Termas da Chavasqueira, a communal bathhouse modeled after a Japanese onsen.
photo: TurGalicia
But move you must, for a 45-minute drive south to the coastline, towards Pontevedra, where the tiny island retreat of Isla de la Toja—along with the nearby old fishing village O Grove—has for centuries been a center of thermalwater wellness. At the Gran Hotel Hesperia La Toja, waters bubbling up at 140ºF contain a mix of sodium chloride, radon, bromine, iron, fluorine, and lithium hydroxide—a combination famed for its restorative powers for the skin, joints, and respiratory passages. Meanwhile, the grand dame’s elegant and recently refurbished Thermal Club also boasts skin-soothing thalassotherapy (seawater) treatments. Nearby, back on the mainland in Cambados, is satiation of a different sort. Here is the home of one-star Michelin eatery Yayo Daporta, where chef Carlos Posadas whips up traditional Galician dishes with a slant towards seafood, to satisfy the culinary senses—and your wallet. For the price, his six-course degustation menu is a steal.
Wellness
If timing your Galician visit to coincide with Semana Santa, a weeklong celebration that engulfs the region from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday (highly recommended, even if you are not a Catholic or Christian), then make your way north to the city of Ferrol, where astonishing religious processions go on all week. In 2014, its Semana Santa all over Spain from April 13-20, so as you travel the two hours north from Ourense, you’re likely to witness smaller versions of Ferrol’s legendary processions in other cities, like the beautiful town of Betanzos.
End your journey with a stop at Taberna do Cantón on Rúa de Carmen, also in Ferrol. This convivial restaurant serves percebes, or goose barnacles, a local delicacy that you’ve likely never previously enjoyed. This rock-residing crustacean is the perfect finish for a sojourn in this seat of spirituality, for as odd as they look, they taste wonderful and, when again paired with the fantastic Albariño wine so plentiful in this region, you’ll feel good all over. It’s just another reminder that, like life, traveling in Galicia, Spain, really isn’t about the destination at all—but the journey.
photo: A Quinta de Auga Hotel
These deeply spiritual processions happen day and night during the week, with all-male Catholic cofradías (brotherhoods) doing penance for their sins by donning face-covering costumes and carrying huge religious figures on flowercovered platforms so heavy it takes 50 or more men to carry them through the streets. The visuals of these vibrantly-colored parades are truly striking and the costumes and pageantry has been a part of Spanish history since long before the founding of America. Seeing the massive Ferrol processions is a once-in-alifetime experience, so be sure to arrive in time for Good Friday, when some of the grandest parades take place.

ON A LARK GREENS SCENE
I
f you’re vegetarian, or simply a healthy foodie, you will wholeheartedly embrace the green-friendly fare of chef John Ledbetter at Lark Creek Newport Beach after your first visit—along with an appetizer of Chick Pea Fries with Harissa aioli, of course. This wonderfully progressive eatery is a simply delicious find for vegetarians, vegans, the gluten-free, and health food fanatics alike. It wasn’t long ago that the more particular breed of diner had to look high and low for a truly divine dine, but Lark Creek is among an increasing number of exquisite Southern California restaurants embracing healthy, creative, upscale cuisine. “I’ve seen a huge trend for more gluten-free items, and at Lark Creek, we have a special gluten-free menu, as well as a vegetarian one,” Ledbetter says. “People are often choosing vegetarian dishes because they want to be healthier, not always because they are vegetarians.” For spring, look for Ledbetter’s light, bright flavors of in-season foods, including English peas, fava beans, green onions, and, his favorite, ramps. Even more delicious, perhaps, is that farm-to-table Lark Creek Newport Beach is the first SPE-certified California restaurant—the mark of the uncompromisingly heath-conscious. LarkCreekNB.com
