recommend the drive, which is only about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Orange County—and well worth it. It truly was a wonder to behold. And who knows when we will be able to see beauty of this magnitude again. I always like to share with you, and all our readers, a little about our fashion pages and cover locations. We are always on the lookout for somewhere new and exciting to shoot and, for this issue, we landed at Paséa Hotel and Spa, Huntington Beach’s newest resort, which has only been in operation since last summer! But the resort is truly amazing, and the staff five-star, from the valet to the concierge. Even if you’re just standing somewhere at the resort, deciding what to do next, you won’t be standing for long… there is always someone stepping up to see if they can help or direct you. The décor, architecture, art and attention to detail is amazing; it truly is a hip, modern beachfront resort, just steps from the Pacific Ocean. People come from everywhere to stay here—it’s even packed on a Wednesday. Even if you reside right here in Orange County and are looking for a new and amazing weekend getaway, you can’t go wrong booking a stay at Paséa Hotel and Spa. I want to thank its entire staff for pulling out the red carpet for bask’s fashion team. It was truly a wonderful day and we can’t wait to go back and stay a weekend as guests. Also, be sure to check out their amazing restaurant, Tanner’s, and AARNA Spa, which is amazing. That’s the first place I’m headed! Can’t wait.

y the time this issue of bask hits your mailbox, spring will have officially sprung, giving us more daylight to be able to enjoy the gorgeous Southern California weather. The rain of the past few months has made everything so beautiful. With all the flowers blooming and the rolling hills a lush green that we all have been missing for quite a few years now, it’s wonderful to go hiking and site-seeing in these gorgeous surroundings. In fact, during a very recent visit with my dad, who resides in Borrego Springs, the view on the drive down the mountainside was spectacular, with miles and miles of blooming flowers. It reminded me of that scene in The Wizard of Oz with Dorothy in the field of poppies. The Los Angeles Times reported that this is the biggest spring bloom in Borrego Springs in about 20 years. So, as you might expect, upon reading this in the paper, hundreds and hundreds of hopeful photographers and just regular people with cameras were backed up along the mountainside into the valley of Borrego Springs, all jockeying for a parking place along the side of the road to be able to get out with their cameras and family members to enjoy this rare experience. So, if you are looking for a great Sunday adventure with your family, I highly

EDITOR’S LETTER

Dawn of a New Day

AMY ADAMS Editor in Chief amy@baskmagazine.com Find me @AIMERSAMA, and bask Magazine @BASKMAG on INSTAGRAM

Last winter, while in London, I woke up early one morning in search of the perfect coffee. There’s nothing serendipitous about this scenario (although I think we can all agree that good coffee is indeed magical). Regardless of what city I’m in—as a resident or as a visitor—sneaking off at sunrise for a cup of joe, as if the day could not truly start without one, is something of a tradition for me. It’s more than that, of course. Anyone who’s been up at the crack of dawn is likely to concur that there is something special, something captivating, about seeing a city in its stillness—the quiet before the storm, a veiled secret that no one else knows. Well, on this particular morning, my son caught me tiptoeing out. But to my delighted surprise, he asked to join me. We walked for a bit in silence, adjusting to the cold, taking in the sights. Then, having found the perfect respite for our sunrise surprise—a foamy cappuccino for me, a hot chocolate for him—we indulged. When I asked my son what had compelled him to tag along, he replied,

“Because I made it my New Year’s resolution to try new things and do new things.” While I’m not one for making resolutions, his plans seemed pretty profound and matter-of-fact for a 12-year-old. So much so, I determined to make a few resolutions of my own. The fi rst was to reconceptualize this page to share my obsessions in the realms of home, fashion and travel that I’m loving for the season, and hope you will too. One of the best parts of being an editor, after all, is the opportunity to connect readers with the new—an item, an idea, an innovator. Always, bask hopes to inspire and engage, which brings me to our virtual presence. With the goal to curate a culture of interaction, as well as an immersive experience for readers, we revamped our website. Now, not only is perusing content from the current issue convenient at a click, it’s a true sensory experience—a platform where editorial and aesthetics intersect in a modern way that resonates with the sensibilities of bask readers. Resolve to find us, won’t you?

Turkish hammams have always been a place

Sojourning to Rancho Santa Fe for a getaway at top health and wellness destination, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa, Beth Fhaner shares all the details of her stay at the beautiful, relaxing retreat. “With a serene environment, several fitness offerings, an extensive menu of luxurious treatments, and fresh organic juices, the Spa offers the ultimate experience in pampering and rejuvenation,” she says. Beth’s top ways to unwind at the resort: getting a spa treatment, taking a yoga class and lounging by the pool.

of sanctuary where one can indulge in both wellness and relaxation. In “Bathing Beauty,” Jenny Peters dishes on Istanbul’s top hammams, including her favorite. “I loved my visit to the Richmond Nua Wellness Spa outside of Istanbul, for the combination of its gorgeous lakeshore setting and its world-class, multipleexperience spa, [which] was wonderful,” she says. Her advice for those seeking a Turkish hammam experience: When visiting a public one, be sure to check access before you go, as some are only open to men or women (not both) at certain times and days; for ultimate relaxation, book your visit for later in the evening, and be sure to sip some Turkish Rize tea afterwards.

4

SUSAN IRBY writer While savoring sumptuous cuisine prepared with a true field-to-fork approach, Susan Irby sits down with chef Rich Mead of Farmhouse at Roger’s Garden to discuss his unique take on fresh-from-the-farm fare. “I love the way chef Mead recognized the importance of developing relationships with farmers early in his career,” she says. “The farmer-chef relationship is fundamental to a true fresh dining experience.” Susan’s top healthy spring meals to make: fava bean salad, citrus salmon crudo and chopped lemon chicken in a papaya boat with goji relish.

6

WENDY BOWMAN writer Giving an inside look at two coveted Southern California properties—a beach-side abode and an Old World-style dwelling—Wendy Bowman describes what makes these homes truly unique. “One exemplifies indoor-outdoor beach living at its finest, while the other is located in a quiet equestrian-zone community that enjoys beautiful Zen-inducing views of the rolling hills,” she explains. Wendy’s top favorite home features: For the beach-side home, a bridge connecting the public and private entries, a floor-to-ceiling wine cellar and a massive garage display window; for the Old World-style home, the front door, views of the rolling hills and infinity-edge tub in the master bath.

South Coast Plaza makes way for another iteration of Southern California’s most coveted spring showcase

ITG - SCP Sping Garden WRITTEN BY JENN THORNTON

S

outh Coast Plaza is a shopper’s paradise nonpareil, offering retail at its most refined. Here, spring brings not only the latest in designer fashions and luxury loot, but also a profusion of plant life and exquisite outdoor home décor that combine to create one of the most sumptuous displays of the season: At Home in the Garden. Sounds quaint, but this is no garden-variety affair—it’s a premier extravaganza, presented by the Southern California Garden Show and avidly attended by a growing number of home and garden connoisseurs with every show it mounts. And what a show! This year, At Home in the Garden—themed to reflect the trend toward designing chic outdoor living spaces—takes root April 27-30 and will feature lush presentations on three levels. Level one will host a series of outdoor-living vignettes. Each sophisticatedly ornamented scene is the result of collaboration between an emerging or established landscape designer from Southern California and a participating South Coast Plaza home store, including the likes of Crate and Barrel and West Elm, which will provide the decor. Gone are the days of plastic patio furniture; these exterior expressions are designed to elevate the outdoor living experience with plush pillows, fine fabrics, smart furnishings and designer adornments reflecting current SoCal style.

Look for greenery galore on levels two and three, where the flourish of flora and fauna will include leafy palms for a touch of the tropics, spiky succulents for a desert oasis, and sensual orchids for a little of that exotic allure. Combine these offerings with home- and garden-related seminars at various South Coast Plaza locations and a jaw-dropping centerpiece from Fiesta Parade Floats, the most honored float builder in the history of the Rose Parade, and you’ll be inspired to create the Eden of your dreams—right in your very own backyard. eeking to refresh your home décor this spring? Serena & Lily’s Newport Beach Design Shop, which opened at Lido Marina Village in late October, is the place to find home, design and art inspiration. The Sausalito-based company’s fifth retail location features the brand’s signature bedding, textiles, wallpaper, rug and paint collections, as well as a curated selection of furniture, lighting, outdoor living, décor and gift items. Founded in 2003 by Serena Dugan, an independent artist and textile designer, and Lily Kanter, an executive-turned-entrepreneur, the innovative brand takes a creative, handson approach to interior design. As for its quaint shop at Lido—its second Southern California locale—the vibrant space boasts a nautical vibe with a swatch wall displaying more than 300 original Serena & Lily textile designs, rotating art displays featuring original works, a complimentary design service, and a workspace for interior designers. Additionally, Serena & Lily bikes are available for purchase, so you can pedal around the marina in style. “What we really love about Lido Marina Village is the rich history of the marina and the thoughtfulness that has gone into the planning to create a wonderful gathering place for family and friends that celebrates the beauty of Southern California,” says CEO Lori Greeley. The result is, of course, a very beautiful life for local design enthusiasts. 3636 Newport Blvd., Newport Beach, CA 949.287.5674, SerenaAndLily.com

Some standouts from this year’s line-up include an opening night gala at Meadowood Napa Valley, Taste of Napa, a Bulgari Luncheon and performances by Joshua Bell, Gloria Estefan, Bill Murray, and Jan Vogler & Friends. In addition to championing an all-encompassing wine country experience each year, Festival Napa Valley has bestowed a number of scholarships to budding musicians, and provides support to arts education throughout public schools in Napa County, granting nearly $1 million since 2011. The store’s modern yet rustic craftsmanship, combined with its classic and natural design aesthetic, fashions a clean sartorial canvas for showcasing the Italian brand’s full range of chic ready-to-wear and accessories. And, with spring on the horizon, there couldn’t be a more perfect time for the label to make its debut in Orange County. Launched by the Max Mara Group in 1984, the collection—namely casual and sophisticated, yet effortless, weekend-wear—designed for modern women to don every day, offers just that. Inside, find a beautiful array of lively prints, simple colors, linens and tweeds—polished and versatile pieces that transition from weekend flea market strolls to sunset cocktails with ease. And, with a nod to the brand’s playful charm, each garment is delicately accented with a tiny butterfly, representing its “chic & free” philosophy.

Gorjana’s flagship jewelry boutique finds a home in Laguna Beach WRITTEN BY BETH FHANER

S

ince 2004, jewelry designer Gorjana Reidel had been helming operations for her iconic brand from a Laguna Canyon warehouse, where she sold her delicate, feminine creations via her website and retail outlets such as Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. So, when Reidel opened her flagship store in downtown Laguna Beach this past September, in a spot she had long coveted, there was reason to rejoice. “Laguna is our hometown, and it was the most natural fit for our store,” she says. Located at the corner of Beach Street and Ocean Avenue, the 1,100-square-foot boutique features a California cool, modern vibe—think a white interior with fixtures accented in gold, along with driftwood pieces and indigo touches that evoke the beach lifestyle. Fashionistas will find the designer’s entire collection of timeless and easy-to-layer jewelry, along with Laguna exclusives such as Power Gemstone bracelets ($38), the Laguna Adjustable Necklace, made to be worn seven different ways ($75), and oneof-a-kind, limited-edition pieces like the Beaded Druzy Necklace ($150). Additionally, Reidel will host bridal parties. “You can come in with your girls and have a really fun time picking out your favorite pieces,” she says, “all while having the personal attention of one of our stylists.” 190 Beach Street Laguna Beach, CA 92651 949.715.8166, Gorjana.com

T

o start, the place is absolutely prodigious—in ambition, in appointments, in scale. Consisting of 524 luxury apartments housed in seven separate structures, Villas Fashion Island is an oasis all its own, designed to work synergistically with its much-loved neighbor, Fashion Island, and featuring architecture and grounds that are also harmonious. It’s a scene meant to evoke a summer village on the outskirts of Rome, but one decidedly more modern than the Old World impression stirs. The result does look and feel a lot like la dolce vita, only by the sea, with contemporary coastal interiors complementing classic Palladian architecture that revive the style with the current aesthetic sensibilities and aspirations of Southern California. To this end, Villas Fashion Island operates solidly in the five-star category, offering residents a cosmopolitan resort lifestyle. Amenities include five pools, multiple outdoor dining areas and a palm promenade along with a generous fitness center and yoga studio, café and juice bar, Great Room with two lounges, catering kitchen and adjoining Great Lawn and a dog park with dog wash. A bocce ball court and putting green round out the recreational riches. Services are a credit to the concierge team, largely a veteran group plenty practiced in the art of hospitality. With many members hailing from The Resort at Pelican Hill, it’s a dream team ready to make reality whatever a resident might require, from scoring an impossible dining reservation to handling the logistics of one’s life via personal shopping, stocking the refrigerator, or coordinating travel. This group also curates Villas Fashion Island’s extensive programming slate, which is designed to create and cultivate community by way of wine tasting, cooking classes, sports viewing parties, fitness classes and more. “More” is basically right outside the front door. With the restaurants and stores of Fashion Island a stone’s throw from Villas Fashion Island, retail utopia is but a saunter—or complimentary weekend shuttle ride—away. A community? More like an island unto itself.

Wellness - Rancho Valencia

rom the moment one arrives at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa, the secluded, Mediterranean-inspired, all-suite property tucked into northern San Diego County, a sense of tranquility immediately takes over. A five-star, FiveDiamond resort and Southern California’s only Relais & Châteaux property, Rancho Valencia offers the ultimate in relaxation and pampering.

Emphasizing wellness, the resort recently elevated its spa experience with several enhancements, including new Elemental Wellness spa therapies, spa treatment packages, and a monthly workshop series featuring a variety of topics ranging from yoga techniques to living a plant-based, wholefoods lifestyle. A new epigenetics wellness program known as the Wellness Collective also launched earlier this year to provide spa members and guests with the resources to make viable changes in their overall wellbeing. The resort partnered with Lifewellness Institute, the premier wellness center in San Diego, to present lectures, workshops, and activities founded on the cutting-edge science of epigenetics (external modifications to DNA that turn 50

genes “on” or “off,” but don’t change the underlying DNA sequence).

“We wanted to combine the already incredible wellness experience and offerings available at Rancho Valencia with a personalized plan from Lifewellness Institute to create a transformative program for longterm, health and wellness,” says Kristi Dickinson, spa and fitness director at Rancho Valencia. The Wellness Collective program consists of six chapters (each represented by 60 days) that offer participants an opportunity to transform a specific lifestyle factor. The programs are based on the sequencing of the human genome and the idea that genes change in response to individual care. With retreats provided over three, four, or seven days, the Wellness Collective includes accommodations, wellness consultation on a chosen chapter focus, three healthy spa cuisine meals a day, personal training and private fitness, unlimited yoga, Pilates, spin, barre, and TRX classes, a daily customized 90-minute spa therapy, lectures by industry experts, and more. Topics for upcoming retreats include Attitude & Perspective (through April) and Nutrition & Toxicity (May and June).

Additionally, the Spa recently launched the Siesta Suite, a new, private outdoor spa treatment area, as well as a new spa menu and brand partnership with ISUN, a plant-powered, eco-conscious luxury skincare collection. Guests and locals alike are welcome to use the resort’s fitness facilities, including the Serenity Yoga Pavilion and 97 complimentary fitness classes a week. Following each class, participants can indulge in fresh, organic juice or a protein shake.

Aside from the numerous spa and fitness offerings, including award-winning tennis facilities, guests shouldn’t miss the new Rein Poolside Retreat, which is located at the Spa’s adults-only pool. Also, be sure to reserve time to simply enjoy the resort’s peaceful property that spans 45 acres and includes lush gardens and olive groves. Its 49 casitas boast an authentic Spanish vibe mixed with a casual, California ambiance, ensuring guests a pleasant stay with spacious interiors, both indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and private outdoor terraces with a Jacuzzi. For on-site dining options, Veladora and The Pony Room serve savory, farm-to-table cuisine, along with an extensive wine menu with over 600 hand-selected vintages and craft tequilas. Other lovely touches include fresh-squeezed orange juice and the newspaper delivered daily to one’s room, locally sourced Dallmann fine chocolates at turn-down service, and Orange Blossom macarons presented upon check-out. All contribute to the overall posh experience at Rancho Valencia.

With new fitness and wellness improvements, ultra-luxurious accommodations and thoughtful and gracious service, one departs from Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa feeling wholly transformed—and longing for an immediate return to the world-class destination. RanchoValencia.com

Delphine Channels Berryhill As president of Butterfli Me Makeup & Lash Studio, this cosmetic industry veteran has devised the go-to beauty destination for a stylish metamorphosis

When and why did you decide to open Butterfli Me? Butterfli Me opened in May 2015 after a year and a half of development. The goal was simple—provide personalized service to women in the area of cosmetic beauty, including makeup, daily skincare, lashes, and brows. Being a veteran of the cosmetic industry, I realized early on that there was a void in what was being offered by the major cosmetic lines. That void was service!

Masters of Trade - Butterfli Me

Have you always wanted to be in this business? After 16 years working for many of the major cosmetic lines and as a freelance makeup artist for television productions, I transitioned into the advertising/marketing industry. I worked for DGWB Advertising before starting my own agency, IPW Experience, which I owned for six years. I loved my years in marketing, but never forgot my roots in cosmetics and how much I enjoyed working with women on a personal level. In 2013, I found myself looking for my next project and decided it was time to execute the idea I had had in the beginning of my career. It was time to launch a service-oriented makeup studio with all the products and services any woman needs to look and feel her best. What services and products do you offer? Soliciting the help of my sister, celebrity makeup artist Dusty Starks, we created four proprietary product lines to sell at the studio. We knew the products had to be as good, if not better, than the lines we were accustomed to working with in the department stores. After months of research, tests, trial and error, we emerged with a stellar collection: Delphine Skincare, Delphine Cosmetics, Dusty Lashes and Dusty Brushes. These products are the pinnacle of quality and performance and the perfect complement to our list of services: makeup (basic application, lessons, events, production and air-brush); lash extensions and faux event lashes; facial waxing; and newly added hair-styling services

I loved my years in marketing, but never forgot my roots in cosmetics and how much I enjoyed working with women on a personal level.

(blowouts, curls, flat-iron, braids and up-dos). Butterfli Me has become the one-stop shop for on-demand beauty services that all women want and need. What is your area of expertise? We put a lot of focus on makeup service; it’s our roots and the future direction of the industry. With that said, our most profitable division is the lash business. We have some of the best lash extension artists in Orange County—at least that’s what our clients say! All of our staff members are licensed aestheticians and cosmetologists with the highest level of training and practices. Most clients are surprised to find out that licensed, certified and insured pros are not the norm in the service industry. It’s time clients were educated; with us it’s mandatory.

in a group setting with the help of our makeup pros. Pamper Parties are for groups up to 20 and involve mini one-on-one makeup sessions with a pro for each guest. All parties include libations, music, photos, raffles and product discounts. These parties are especially popular for work events, bridal parties, birthday celebrations and school/sports groups. What are some of the latest of-the-moment makeup and beauty trends for spring? We are now offering Contour Elite Face and Body Sculpting services. Contour Elite is the newest offering in the beauty world that addresses skin tightening, fat reduction and body sculpting. Unlike all the other competitors in the field, Contour Elite delivers nonsurgical, pain-free, measurable results in the first couple of visits for a fraction of the cost of other treatments. We brought it in for our clients who are looking for face tightening with red carpet results; this treatment delivers that and much more. All areas of the face, neck and body are dramatically improved with this quick and easy treatment. By far, this is the biggest beauty breakthrough that we’ve seen in some time. Makeup-wise, we continue to see the trend move in the direction of natural and lasting. Waterproof liners, liquid lipsticks and cream shadows are the spring standouts for all-day lasting color.

Masters of Trade - Butterfli Me What makes your studio different? Butterfli Me offers all sorts of tools that are unique in our industry. We launched with a makeup LookBook menu that has grown to 27 different looks for all eye and skin colors. As simple as that sounds, it is revolutionary in our industry. Clients are encouraged to peruse the LookBook to find their favorite look on our website before coming in or with their artist in the studio. After their appointment, they can refer back to the LookBook to find a color chart for recreating their look at home. We also offer multiple membership programs to fit each client’s needs, from the “Treat Me” membership, which offers one makeup or blow dry session a month (at a deeply discounted rate), to the “Spoil Me” membership offering eight makeup or hair services a month. “Spoil Me” is ideal for our clients who want that expert blow out and makeup application every week. The newest membership program is “Lash Me,” which offers unlimited lash fills and an add-on service (makeup, blow dry or wax) for one low monthly price. Do you offer any special events and programs? One of our most popular offerings is our makeup parties, done in a variety of themes for groups of all ages and sizes. Tutorial Parties are for groups of 4 to 10 and offer participants the chance to learn the basics of makeup application while creating one of our looks

What beauty treatment or regimen can you not live without? Personally, I’ve become addicted to the blowout. There’s nothing more awesome than the feeling of having your hair blown, stretched and smoothed into your favorite, flawless style and it lasting for days that way. I’m also a huge advocate of exfoliation…and have been since my early training with Clinique. It’s the key to healthy, radiant skin, smooth makeup and long-term skin health. There are lots of chemical exfoliants that have come on the scene, but I haven’t found anything better than a good-old manual face scrub. Our Exfoliating Enzyme Scrub is perfect for regular use on both women and men and guaranteed to make you a believer. 2646 Dupont Dr., Suite 65, Irvine, CA 949.825.7272 | Butterfli.Me baskmagazine.com

Fashionable Friends There was a little extra holiday magic at The Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, when over 600 elegantly-attired guests flocked to the locale for the sold-out Friends of CASA Annual Holiday Luncheon and Fashion Show. Kicking off the festivities was a brilliant runway show by 2016 Fashion Partner Ted Baker London, presented by South Coast Plaza, that brought forth a bevy of the British brand’s signature unconventional styles. The program then struck a heartfelt tone as Masters of Ceremonies Barclay Butera and Ray Langhammer of Barclay Butera Interiors took the stage to introduce guest speaker Rhonda Beylik. The CASA volunteer shared the touching story of how, four years ago, she came to advocate for a special 14-year-old girl, who has now fulfilled her dreams of graduating high school and attending college.

Bathing Beauty Taking the waters in Turkish hammams and discovering bliss in Istanbul WRITTEN BY JENNY PETERS

Feature - Istanbul

W

hen it comes to wellness, the Turks really know what they are doing. It’s an easy conclusion to come to once you take in your fi rst hammam in one of Istanbul’s famed Turkish baths. It’s an all-encompassing bathing experience that includes heat, body scrubbing and foam soaping that’s been a part of the country’s culture for almost a thousand years—with those living between the Black Sea and the Aegean/Mediterranean Seas having always embraced the celebrated ritual. In Istanbul, which straddles both Europe and Asia, the hammam has been a fi xture of life since the city—then called Constantinople—was under Roman control. That was during the 3rd century, when the tradition of installing elaborate baths in homes began. Later, at the height of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire in the 1600s, historians estimate that there were well over 200 public hammams in Istanbul alone.

Today, Istanbul is still a center of healthy living, with many centuries-old, traditional public hammams dotting its neighborhoods, as well as gorgeous and luxurious newer ones located in some of the city’s world-class hotel spas. Add to these options the Richmond Nua Wellness Spa—a spectacular destination spa not far from the city—and the choices for visitors on a wellness journey to Turkey are slightly overwhelming.

The constant at every place offering a hammam ritual is that it is always done in a warm, marble room with plenty of marble sinks and water spigots. Th is has not much changed over the last millennium, propelling the idea that the Turks’ specific bathing system holds the secret to maintaining a healthy life, with its benefits ranging from boosting the immune system, reducing stress and detoxifying the body, to deeply cleansing and exfoliating the skin and improving its texture.

The beautiful Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus overlooks the famed strait that straddles Europe and Asia.

A

t public hammams, like the Sultanahmet Hammam (just blocks from the Hagia Sophia) or the Cemberlitas Hamami (near the Grand Bazaar), guests often perform much of the bathing ritual themselves, moving from the steam room to a heated marble space, where they will bathe using increasingly warm water. Then an attendant armed with a kese, a special natural-fiber glove designed to exfoliate the skin and increase its circulation, comes to give you a full-body scrub. Once that step is completed, the hammam continues as you lay on the marble slab while a foam bubble bath envelops your body. Finally, the attendant splashes you with ever-cooler buckets of water to complete the ritual, which is usually priced around 40 euros (approximately $43 USD). For a more individual and luxurious hammam experience, the five-star spa at the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus creates unforgettable and very private signature treatments known as “Hammam Moments.” Beginning with a visit to the sauna and steam room to soften the skin, a spa therapist leads you to one of the hotel’s three dimly lit marble Turkish bath treatment rooms. After lying on the heated marble slab in the center of the room, a feeling of womb-like serenity descends as you are doused with progressively warmer water.

Then starts the scrubbing, with the aforementioned kese, followed by those indulgent foamy bubbles. Adding a deep-tissue massage to create a “Spa Journey” guarantees that by trip’s end, your legs will feel like rubber and your body will be so tranquil that you’ll barely be able to wander into the exotically luxurious relaxation room for a sip of Rize Turkish tea, served traditionally in a small tulip-shaped glass. masks or replenishing hair treatments. While at the famed, OldWorld Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah, visitors can stay in the same room where writer Agatha Christie reportedly penned Murder on the Orient Express, visit the Ataturk Museum (which is located in the suite inside the hotel where the founder of modern Turkey lived), dine on delectable Turkish fare and enjoy a hammam treatment to boot. For the ultimate Turkish wellness experience, take a twohour ride outside of Istanbul to Sapanca Lake, where the worldrenowned Richmond Nua Wellness Spa awaits. Here, at Turkey’s only destination spa, their dedication to wellness knows no limits. (In fact, this is the place where the idea for Global Wellness Day—a celebration of living well involving over 100 nations— originated in 2012.)

At Richmond Nua, which looks out over a bucolic lake surrounded by mountains, guests can take a dip in the lake, use SUP boards, go sailing, hike into the hills or simply lounge by the large swimming pool. There’s even skiing nearby in winter. But most come for the spa itself, a place with so many options it takes a guidebook to do it right. Entering the massive spa, with pocket guide in hand, freshly showered guests take an individual journey through a series of spa therapies. It begins with soaks in the large Salt Jacuzzi, alternated with dips in the freshwater Jet Pool. Then it’s on to the secondlevel treatment rooms, beginning with the Laconium, where dry

And that’s just halfway through this singular spa trip. Following, guests will proceed to the 40C Osman Steam Bath, into the Day Dream relaxation room, then on to the hot 40C Salt Inhalation Steam Bath and the cool (and spectacular) Aqua Cave for a chilly splash. Finally, a respite in the Loft Sauna reheats things, with the Ice Grotto finishing off the personal, self-paced ritual. Mix in a treatment, be it a traditional hammam Turkish bath/scrub, a bespoke facial or perhaps a magnesium massage (choosing a different option each day of your stay), and by the time you tear yourself away from Richmond Nua, you’ll feel incredibly healthy (while also plotting a return here).

Feature - Istanbul The marble hammam treatment room at the Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah in Istanbul.

Each hammam experience in and around Istanbul has its own unique qualities, but all share the inherent bliss that comes from indulging in this age-old ritual. One that’s truly timeless, and definitely worth the trip.

SECLUDED SHORES Relax amid the brisk, salty air at this private retreat in Corona del Mar’s terraced seaside community

T

he dynamic duo of realtor Summer Lynne Perry and high-end custom home builder/developer Scott Cross is at it again; this time in Corona del Mar to construct and market a stunning, technologically advanced and entirely turn-key home, complete with architectural direction by Mark Teale and a full swath of modern interior furnishings curated by Blackband Home & Design. “I think the biggest wow factor of this home is the unique design it offers,” says Perry of The Summer Perry Group at Surterre Properties, who is listing the new SC Homes-built residence for $12.995 million. “This soft, seaside contemporary home is not one you would ‘typically’ see in Orange County. It’s more of an L.A. style that is just starting to be seen here. It is not a surprise to me that Scott Cross and Mark Teale are on the cutting-edge of design, though. They are both very well-versed with the Southern California market and enjoy paying attention to design and details that are involved with all aspects of the building process.”

the shades, key the music, activate the lights and much more. Pair this with a wealth of opulent, high-quality touches and amenities throughout the 8,400-square-foot home, including Fleetwood doors and windows, wood drop ceilings, French white oak and plank limestone flooring, custom furnishings, an elevator and artwork by Beverly Hills artist Daniel Maltzman. Connecting the foyer to the main level is a bridge entry employed by Teale—a concept that has interested him since visiting Mario Botta’s Bridge House while studying architecture in Lugano, Switzerland—to accentuate the transition from the home’s public entrance to its private, but open, main level living area. On the left is a dining room flanked by an enclosed, climate-controlled, floor-to-ceiling glass wine cellar that spans approximately 25 linear feet and holds more than 1,000 vintages. Meanwhile, to the right, a sleek, minimally styled chef ’s kitchen boasts a wave-top island featuring Cambria waterfall-edge slabs, Thermador appliances and a separate catering kitchen with access to an outdoor barbecue area. The centerpiece is the family room, which sports a stone accent wall, remote-controlled rock fireplace, built-in big-screen television and modern track lighting. And this is where the view starts to get amazing. Fleetwood pocket doors and windows open to mesmerizing ocean outlooks spanning from Catalina Island to the Newport Harbor jetty and beyond to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, along with a partially covered terrace offering multiple seating areas for dining and socializing, an infinity-edged pool with a waterfall spa, and attractive, drought-tolerant landscaping.

Situated at 4525 Camden Drive, in the desirable and terraced beachside community of Cameo Shores, the contemporary limestone and stucco residence welcomes home its owners via an attractive frosted glass door. Once inside, glass walls slide open at the touch of a button, revealing dramatic rooms that flow into one another and capture as much view as possible. Another custom tech-savvy feature is a whole-home Control4 System that works from anywhere by means of a smartphone app, enabling one to electronically lift

A walk-through laundry room leads to two additional guest bedrooms, one highlighted by a charming inverted window.

As for Perry’s favorite features on the home’s main level, she says, “I absolutely love the glass wall wine towers that create a hall to divide the entertaining space and the bedroom areas/powder room. It is one of the most unique aspects of this home, and I think it was executed perfectly. The wood detail at the ceiling creates a soft contrast with the frameless glass towers. Hosting over 1,000 bottles of brute and/or wine, it is undeniably a show stopper.” 86

Completing the home’s sizeable layout, a floating wooden staircase topped by a sculptural brass designer fixture descends to the terrace level—or what Perry calls, “The fun part of the house.” Within the wideopen space, one finds numerous pocket doors that can be opened to patios when entertaining; a second living room; an additional intimate seating area; and a full walk-in bar equipped with an under-counter refrigerator, beer tap, dishwasher drawer and sink. Meanwhile, dotted around the perimeter is a game room; massage/ exercise room; and guest bedroom with full bath. The piece de resistance? A secluded home theater featuring acoustic panels and 5.1 surround sound; an oversized showroom garage with room to showcase 10 cars, gray granite epoxy flooring and tool storage closet; and a private courtyard boasting a seating area, 20-foot waterfall, linear fire pit and any male’s ultimate dream—a massive window into the aforementioned garage that allows a car lover to exhibit a favorite automobile. “The terrace level offers a comfortable movie theater, living room, massage parlor and back-lit waterfall that rivals any other home I have seen built in the recent past in Corona del Mar for far more per foot than this manse is listed for,” says Perry. “I just hope when this property claims its new owner that I am invited to house sit when they travel.” We should all be so lucky.

HOME

W

hen it came time for a couple to sell their longtime custom home in historic San Juan Capistrano, they wanted to ensure that their beloved property would be in good hands. So, they approached their neighbor—a successful entrepreneur who had just completed a $4 million re-envisioning of his own residence—to see if he and his partner, high-end custom homebuilder Eldon Blasco (also a neighbor), would consider purchasing and enhancing their dwelling. Fast-forward to today, and what has since emerged is a custom Old-World-style residence rife with exquisite antiques and authentic period details alongside alluring modern amenities. Originally striking a chord with the new buyers due to its combination of beautiful bones and Zen-inducing views, the approximately 25-year-old residence has been completely transformed during the past 13 months, thanks to the finest materials from around the world and highly skilled craftsmen. Expect 5,000-plus square feet of open and neutrally colored living space punctuated throughout with antiques; hand-forged sconces and chandeliers (along with recessed LED lighting); hand-hewn doors; Turkish travertine and hickory wood flooring; 9-to-14-foot beamed ceilings; cast-iron registers; attractive built-ins; and much more. According to Bob Gino of Surterre Properties, who is currently listing the home for $3.895 million, the development partnership that led to the home’s transformation has been magical. “That’s what you get when you combine a high-end custom homebuilder with more than 35 years of experience with a successful entrepreneur who has been intimately involved with several development projects of his own.”

No expense has been spared, from the high-end appliances and 200-year-old front door, to the antique vanities and doors, to the hand-forged sconces and chandeliers.

Situated at 28521 Avenida La Mancha —in Hidden Mountain Estates, a secluded haven of 36 custom homes nestled within the gated Hidden Mountain community—the fourbedroom, four-and-a-half-bath home rests on a sizable half-acre lot bordered by equestrian trails and panoramic views of the rolling hills. Only a mile from downtown San Juan Capistrano, near the 5 Freeway and Ortega Highway, the property also offers convenient access to popular attractions, such as Mission San Juan Capistrano (visible from the home’s backyard) and the San Juan trails, a 50plus mile system of pathways ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding, along with the top private schools St. Margaret’s and J Serra. The grand exterior of the Early California Mission/Santa Barbara-style home is highlighted by a white stucco façade and red tile roof. Upon approaching the front entryway, one is immediately mesmerized by a stunning chandelier, decorative window grills and a one-ofa-kind, 200-year-old double door culled from a monastery in Mexico City, complete with original details such as a skeleton key, knocker and chains once used for holding a bar for additional security. Adding to the door’s uniqueness is a modern touch: a Ring Video Doorbell that allows homeowners to see, hear and speak to visitors using an app on their smartphone.

Returning to the foyer, one then enters into the living portion of home. alder wood cabinetry; a center island with butcher block; and Subzero, Wolf and Bosch appliances (complemented by an antique brass oven hood with modern lighting and an exhaust fan), along with a double copper sink and a built-in buffet offering ample storage. Found just outside the kitchen is a 500-plus bottle Vinotemp built-in wine room. Yet other features in the living wing include a powder room boasting a beautiful antique vanity with a copper sink; a guest room with a walk-in closet and en-suite bath highlighted by a hammered copper tub and sink and rain shower; and finally, a laundry room outfitted with a free standing farmhouse sink. Rounding out this home’s special appeal is a three-car garage equipped with indoor-outdoor carpeting and built-in storage, along with unlimited possibilities to expand the home with

everything from an additional garage to a guesthouse. “No expense has been spared, from the high-end appliances and 200-year-old front door, to the antique vanities and doors, to the hand-forged sconces and chandeliers,” says Gino. Adds Blasco: “It’s this level of detail that we pride ourselves on while staying true to the architectural vision in every aspect of the home. When we do that with everything, it all comes together at the end and it’s magical. It would have been less expensive to buy new vanities and other pieces rather than use customized antiques, but building this way is a passion.” One thing’s for sure, with action and passion combined, enchantment is easily within reach at this custom Spanish beauty pleasantly perched in the undulating hills of San Juan Capistrano.

bask Loves Nourishing Spa Cuisine WRITTEN BY SUSAN IRBY

The word “spa” is so-named for the Belgian city of Spa, a place where guests have been relaxing in mud baths and sipping natural spring water since the 14th century, and the primary influence for the movement towards the beautiful low-fat, low cholesterol foods of the 1980’s. Today’s spa cuisine has reached new heights, with both resort spas and non-spa dining establishments creating menus using ingredients that nourish and rejuvenate the body from the inside out.

MONARCH BEACH RESORT Monarch Beach Resort features the Miraval Life in Balance Spa and Miraval Spa Café, a sanctuary for those seeking self-improvement and life change. Exuding an aura of mindfulness through nutrition, fitness, spiritual healing, unique spa treatments and a whole food dining experience, spa-goers will find that indulging the Lemon Verbena Grilled Organic Chicken with Red Quinoa and Garden Harvest Spinach Wrap with Balsamic Roasted Portobello Mushrooms is a delicious way to expand the healing spa experience here—one that also offers new spa treatments using coastal inspired ingredients including sea salt, crystal salt stones, algae, and marine muds.

THE RESORT AT PELICAN HILL Classically trained French chef Jean-Pierre Dubray shares that the spa cuisine of today emphasizes locally sourced produce, more seafood selections and versatile oils such as grapeseed. “We grow avocado and strawberry orchards on our company’s own land, providing a special freshness to our dishes,” states Dubray. In addition to the resort spa, guests can book a Wellness Day in a private Spa Suite for up to five people, or the Spa Suite for just a few hours. With its exclusive menu, cuisine selections include the Mochiko Chicken with Asian marinade, Crab Avocado Carpaccio. PelicanHill.com

OC spas and restaurants serve up a secret—and beneficial—bill of fare

An oasis in the canyons, The Ranch at Laguna Beach recently celebrated its “reenvisioned” style as a coastal ranch resort. Introducing a 3,000-square-foot indoor/ outdoor spa, clientele can indulge in an array of restorative options such as the Stone and Shell Signature Treatment, Thermal Therapy. Cuisine from Harvest, The Ranch at Laguna Beach’s premier restaurant, may be enjoyed at the spa. Recommended selections include Gem Lettuces with green goddess dressing, Chopped Kale with cranberries, marcona almonds, and pickled shallots or Hamachi Crudo with yuzu vinaigrette and pickled pear.

Farm Fresh

Taking root within Roger’s Gardens, Farmhouse reflects warm country charm WRITTEN BY SUSAN IRBY

A

lthough influenced by the city, farms and farmers who share his culinary “pursuit of excellence” also touch popular local chef Rich Mead. With over 35 years of experience in successful restaurants such as Sage, Sage on the Coast and Canyon, chef Mead is no stranger to palate pleasing dishes, like those on the menu at the recently opened Farmhouse at Roger’s Gardens. Locals know Roger’s Gardens as a lush, plant-filled mecca of outdoor living in the heart of Newport Beach. So when Farmhouse, an al fresco cafe, opened there last fall, patrons flocked to the new dining establishment. Here, chef Mead reveals why a fresh experience on the plate starts with a trip to the “farm.”

Farmhouse exudes “field to fork.” How did that become important to you? I grew up in the city, yet was drawn to learning about farms and the role of vegetables in my cooking while at Stanley’s. Then, while working at a restaurant in Santa Monica, some local farmers came to the back door with lettuces. Through meeting them and exploring farmers’ markets, I began to recognize the importance of working with and sourcing foods from local farmers; people like-minded in their pursuit of culinary excellence.

baskmagazine.com

What unique approach are you taking at Farmhouse? How has the menu evolved? Because of the restaurant size and the environment, I simplify the food with an emphasis on freshness. Our kitchen is small; we focus on keeping dishes simple in terms of preparation and plating. Simplicity with a touch of elegance.

Table Farmhouse

Who has been the most influential person in your culinary journey? My mom inspired me with her Chinese cooking. Early in my career, I was fortunate to open a restaurant in Sherman Oaks called Stanley’s. The owners allowed me the freedom to create dishes and influence the menu with continuously changing specials. Also, my friend, Joe Miller, who owned Joe’s Restaurant in Venice, has been a big influence [on] my culinary style and in business.

126

Talk about “sourcing locally.” Working with local farmers inspires me through the changing seasons. Weekly trips to farmers’ markets create an opportunity to look and think about food in a different light… [how] the colors, tastes and textures translate to the plate. I enjoy supporting culinary artisans who have a commitment to the environment.

What are your three must-have ingredients? Fresh seasonable vegetables, citrus and vinegars. One of the most popular Farmhouse dishes is the House Cured Salmon. Any secrets to how it’s prepared? We cure the salmon in salt, sugar and fresh herbs for 48 hours and then “paint” the salmon with a pastrami-type mixture we make in-house. What is special to you about Farmhouse? The venue is spectacular and a perfect fit for what we are doing. What can diners look forward to on the menu this spring? With spring, you will see asparagus, strawberries, stone fruit and spring onion. FARMHOUSE 2301 San Joaquin Hills Road Corona del Mar, CA 949.640.1415, FarmhouseRG.com

A daily dose of health and wellness comes to Lido Marina Village WRITTEN BY AMY ADAMS

R

ecently revitalized Lido Marina Village has seen a surge of activity these days—including the opening of JSH Marina Cafe, a cozy, 35-seat resto offering an innovative, quality-rich and locally-inspired plant-based and eggs menu for breakfast and lunch. When Alex Matthews and Greg Alterman founded JSH ( Juice Served Here) in 2012, they were both working in the fashion industry but felt inspired to create wellness-focused juices. With a loyal celebrity clientele in L.A., the duo expanded their vision, a flagship concept to Orange County. “At Juice Served Here, we’ve been very successful by following our ‘Never Conventional’ mantra, and our first-ever restaurant—JSH Marina Café—also will be characterized by its originality,” expresses Matthews. Original indeed. Expect wholesome items such as smoothie bowls with fresh berries, avocado or coddled eggs over fresh-baked, artisanal breads and tasty macadamia nut lattes, along with JSH’s traditional cold-pressed juices, custom tonics and flavorful juice shots aimed to support skin and immune system health. Whether an all-around foodie or health and wellness guru, one is bound to delight in some of these delectable pleasures. “We envision JSH Marina Café quickly becoming a daily ritual for our clients as part of their active, healthy lifestyles,” says Matthews.

estled in the canyons of south Laguna Beach, restaurant Harvest at The Ranch at Laguna Beach is located on the city’s newest hotel oasis. With the relaxed feeling of a coastal mountain lodge, spacious, warm and inviting are qualities guests will enjoy while dining at Harvest, a much-welcomed, upscale culinary destination since its predecessor at The Ranch at Laguna Beach shuttered in 2007. Having begun his career at the tender age of 14, the restaurant’s Director of Culinary Operations and Executive Chef Charles Imbelli takes a “California comfort” approach to his cuisine. Named among Zagat’s “Best 30 Under 30,” chef Imbelli’s palate and style reflect Italian and Puerto Rican family influences, as well as those developed while working with

renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson. “I live every day doing something I love,” shares chef Imelli. “At Harvest, I strive to create food that is comforting, approachable and surprising.” Supplemented by fresh ingredients from Harvest Garden, the property’s organic farm, the menu brings flavorful surprises with every dish, such as the Lamb Meatballs appetizer with preserved lemon. Entrees include the Harvest Burger with a colorful horseradish-beet sauce, Skuna Bay Salmon with red pepper tzatziki and, a menu musthave, the Half Mary’s Chicken with beluga lentils. For dessert, the creamy Pot de Crème with cocoa nibs and Apple Fritters are among the house-made selections. The full bar with artisanal cocktails includes the Cottage No. 9 with Templeton Rye, craft beer on tap and a well-balanced wine list.

or patrons attending productions in Costa Mesa’s Theater & Arts District, grabbing a post-show bite is now even more enticing with the arrival of Water Grill, which recently took over the former site of Scott’s Seafood near South Coast Plaza. As the latest fine-dining establishment for King’s Seafood Co., the trendy resto—located in a gorgeous new building—features nautical design elements and rustic touches throughout its expansive interior, including a main dining area with a copper-top bar and an oyster bar illuminated by a custom-designed chandelier of oyster shells. Additionally, an extra-large patio with a retractable roof and resortstyle lounge seating invites guests to linger over the fresh, savory fare and handcrafted cocktails. Besides the visual feast, diners can indulge in an array of seafood dishes such as Chilean Sea Bass, grilled octopus, a New England Lobster Roll and various chilled- or iced-shellfish platters. Tempting brunch options include lemon ricotta pancakes, crab Benedict and Atlantic salmon hash. With its delectable seafood, attentive service and upscale ambiance, Water Grill is just one more lure for OC’s premier shopping and theater district.

LOOKING BACK

FIFTY & FABULOUS

An Orange County icon reaches the half-century mark still very much in fashion WRITTEN BY JENN THORNTON

A

Looking Back

beacon of luxury retail in Costa Mesa, South Coast Plaza marks its 50th anniversary this year with all the attending ceremony one might hope for from an international shopping destination with annual sales in the $2 billion vicinity and a ballooning portfolio of luxury leaseholders that is equally prolific in philanthropy and arts patronage as it is at staging events and scoring exclusives. And yet, even classy South Coast Plaza—the South Coast Plaza, with its 250 stores and restaurants spread across 128 acres—had to start somewhere. If “somewhere” is on the more modest side, it also indicates good foresight on the part of its owners, the Segerstrom family. In 1898, the Segerstroms landed in Orange County and acquired a parcel of land that, had they not developed it, might have proved just merely promising. But they did, and in time they also built a solid agricultural business. Just as improbable as the idea of a sprawling shopping mall would have seemed in the 19th century, is the fact that South Coast Plaza now sits on land that once grew the humble lima bean. But in 1967, this very land would prove truly priceless, as the same year South Coast Plaza (all two levels of it) officially opened, with a middle-class market May Company, and soon after, a Sears. Singer, Woolworth—all big brands for the times, but not fully indicative of what South Coast Plaza ultimately introduced, which was a new breed of American shopping center: the retail complex. In this case, one that went on to reflect the area’s change in fortune and, by the ‘70s, was paving the 130

way to preeminence, recruiting luxury brands and securing inaugural U.S. locations and regional exclusives, like the first Nordstrom to open outside the Pacific Northwest. Success introduced a surge of upscale tenants, services and shoppers. The Plaza became a palace, expanding every era. Architectural extensions produced wing after wing (up went the Jewel Court, the Crystal Court, the Bridge of Gardens) and multi-million interior renovations resulted in grand aesthetic touches—ancient Egyptian motifs, marble as far as the eye could see. The finery knew no end. Success on such an unprecedented scale deserves nothing less than a 50th anniversary with the works, and that’s precisely what’s in store for South Coast Plaza in 2017. In addition to welcoming more Orange County exclusives, including Dior Homme and Stella McCartney, as well as the sole West Coast location for Gianvito Rossi and Aquazzura, South Coast Plaza will celebrate its heritage with events, exhibits and exciting collaborations. It has partnered with the likes of Gucci, Brunello Cucinelli, TOD’S and Marni for limited-edition luxury goods exclusive to its boutiques. For fall, expect a flurry of fashion fare and the release of a new collectible retrospective on the complex published by Assouline. South Coast Plaza is, as ever, the center of everything.
