That's the Spirit
W
hen I was a little girl, I loved to dress up and go to parties. I reveled in the idea of picking out the perfect party dress and spending hours chatting with friends. I remember reading one of my report cards that came home on carbon paper (this was long before the digital era!)—perfect grades, with a comment that read, “Amy is an excellent student, but she needs to talk less in class.” At the time, I hopelessly tried not to let something so trivial overshadow my year’s academic success, but looking back, that teacher was really on to something! Not much has changed over the years… I still get caught up in meeting new people, sharing a few laughs and hearing about their lives. I’ve discovered that if I listen, I’m often inspired.
conviviality and hard work members of our local community put forth in a collective and relentless effort to help others in need. People—busy people—who dedicate so much of themselves on behalf of individuals and worthy causes that in many ways touch and affect us all. Through them, I’ve been party to so many beautiful stories that have resulted from altruism at its most inspiring. And isn’t that something to talk about?
Edit Note
So it was recently, at a charity function benefitting CHOC—an event that I attended solo, but, of course, found myself in familiar territory, befriending the person next to me and answering a question that, as an editor, I’ve been asked at least a dozen times: “Do you ever get tired of going to these events?” Me?, I mused to myself. Despite the proverbial search for the perfect party dress (I haven’t already been seen wearing), I replied as I always do, with a humble, “No, actually.” Because the fact of the matter is, I love people, excite at the idea of a guest list that presents an opportunity to move among an interesting new circle, especially if part of a tremendous cause. Among the perks of my present post is attending many of the charity events that we cover throughout our Faces + Places pages; some like the CHOC Glass Slipper Guild's Gala, supporting CHOC Children’s patients and families, and others like Table for 10, a culinary extravaganza that benefits Vocational Visions, a program that provides support to adults with disabilities and The Teen Project, which helps teens aging out of the foster care system. While I may not personally relate to every cause, I can say this: No matter how many events I attend, I am positively touched (usually to tears) by the support,

Also worthy of conversation is an exotic getaway, so in this issue, we’ve got where to stay, shop and eat in Hong Kong and where to dance and peruse the arts in Buenos Aires. Closer to home, we cover new restaurant openings like Marin, and spectacular homes and architecture worth discovering. So whether you’re staying home for the sunny season or spending summer abroad, seek kinship within confines both far and familiar. Our own community is not only beautiful and inspiring in its own right, but as a place we are so fortunate to call home. It rouses within us something far more than a coveted address ever could—true community spirit, a chance to be the life—and soul—of the party.

In bask’s fashion pages, she shares this season’s hautest styles. “I’m on the hunt for a fun cold shoulder top to try out this summer. I think it would be a great addition to my wardrobe since it’ll keep me cool while also minimizing the appearance of my upper arms,” she says. Anne’s top three accessories to beat the heat with: parasols, sunglasses with UV protection and hair tie bracelets.
An avid arts enthusiast, Beth Fhaner takes in all the sights and sounds of one of Orange County’s most beloved summer traditions, the Sawdust Art & Craft Festival, which she details in “Sawdust’s Golden Gala.” “From browsing original artwork by Laguna Beach artists to viewing the live art demonstrations to enjoying live music, Sawdust offers a unique experience for art enthusiasts,” she says. “There’s something kind of magical about the whole Sawdust experience.” Beth’s top three favorite media at the festival: oil paintings, photography and hand-blown glass.

SAWDUST’S GOLDEN GALA
Laguna Beach’s iconic art festival celebrates 50 years WRITTEN BY BETH FHANER
I
nfluential French artist Paul Cézanne once said, “Art is a harmony parallel with nature.” He wasn’t referring to Laguna Beach’s Sawdust Art Festival, of course, but the painter’s quote does befit the event’s seamless confluence of art and nature. The festival’s grounds are part of what makes the Sawdust experience so enchanting. Located in a 150-yearold eucalyptus grove in Laguna Canyon, the unique setting features a handcrafted village of artists set along sawdust-covered paths.
This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Sawdust Art Festival, which is commemorating the milestone with a new theme, “Celebrating the Soul of Art for 50 Years!” Held daily from June 24 to August 28, the nonjuried event showcases the fine art and craft of more than 200 Laguna Beach artists, as well as live entertainment on three stages, artist demonstrations, hands-on art workshops for all ages, and a variety of gourmet foods, beer and 30

organic wine. The festival’s diverse range of media includes paintings, handblown and fused glass, ceramics, photography, wood and metal sculpture, clothing and textiles, surf art, jewelry and more.
Since Sawdust’s founding in 1967, art enthusiasts and collectors alike have flocked to the festival to browse original artwork in a casual setting. From the beginning, festival organizers envisioned the event as more of an artists’ “happening” instead of a staid exhibit. As the largest summer art festival in Southern California, the nine-week event draws more than 200,000 visitors worldwide each year. For Sawdust’s 50th celebration, a jam-packed lineup of activities and special features is scheduled, including “Sip, Talk & Walk,” an insider’s guided tour of the grounds with a complimentary wine tasting; a painted vintage VW bus installation; a chalkboard wall; a “Memory Walk” that covers Sawdust’s history and highlights its charming geography; a retro poster display; and a 50th anniversary remembrance book. Additionally, Laguna legend and surf art icon Bill Ogden, whose work has inspired art aficionados at Sawdust for decades, created the 50th anniversary poster. An art festival that is truly unlike any other, Sawdust is a cherished summer tradition, with its 50th year promising to be the best yet. SawdustArtFestival.org

Mozie Bicycles gives new meaning to accessorizing on the go

f there’s something most Southern Californians love more than sunshine and being outdoors in the summer, it’s riding around town in style. Take a cue from San Francisco-based Mozie Bicycles’ founder Darren Buck and skirt around on a two-wheeler that’s equally engineered to be as fashionable as it is functional. After living and working in Beijing, Buck aspired to design a bicycle that was not only beautiful to look at, but also stood the test of time. “Our bikes were born out of the desire to design bicycles that retain comfort and practicality without sacrificing the exterior look,” he says. “Bicycles that uphold classical, stylish cycling heritage while embracing the technologies of the modern world.” With myriad options of moving about town, none can compare with this footprint. Profile intro
How would you describe the overall style of clothing found at Jeanni Champagne Boutique?
The style of clothing can be described as a mix of European chic and laid back California-cool lifestyle. We have a wide variety of styles, catering to a broad demographic. Styles range from casual essentials like threadbare tanks and rock chic t-shirts to classic pieces suitable for work to sophisticated-sexy tops and dresses for weddings or a night out on the town. We’re also excited about our recently introduced, amazingly cute novelty kids clothing line serving ages 2–10. We also carry beautiful decorative candles, gifts and accessories. How does this resonate with your clientele and the Orange County lifestyle?
I believe OC life emanates effortless cool style; it’s fashion with an edgy twist, and so are the unique items you’ll find at Jeanni Champagne Boutique. Our store features leading edge brands, premium denim, up-and-coming designers, and also carries the hottest fashion trends. We have a welcoming vibe, and, not to mention, the best customer service!

Where do you find inspiration for your buying?
Jeanni Champagne BOUTIQUE Effortlessly chic and always elegant, the fashions found at Jeanni Champagne Boutique reflect both current style trends and that of its owner, Jeandre Braak.
From growing up in South Africa to traveling throughout Europe, specifically to fashion inspiration meccas like London, Paris, Italy and Spain, to now living in California these past four years. I get inspired by women with effortlesscool style from all over. How has Jeanni Champagne’s style evolved over the years?
I try to stay true to a core, classic style that I believe should represent the boutique’s overall image and try to complement it with curated, trendy, fashionable styles of the time. The style and lines we carry have evolved into a unique product mix that you don’t find anywhere else. What pieces can we expect to see this season? How do they differ from last year?
From romantic ruffles to mismatched prints, a host of exciting new trends have emerged. The trend last year was photography by TONY FLOREZ more focused on an androgynous aesthetic and boyfriendlike dressing, which, this season has changed to a softer, more feminine take on fashion. Bohemian inspirations are also still very Hailing from South Africa, Jeandre combines the fashion sensibility she much at the forefront of the season’s style trends. gained there with the influences she picked up while in Europe and living in Southern California to curate an exquisite collection of top-designer What trends are you personally looking forward to most this summer? styles for the boutique. What is your process for selecting the pieces/ brands that you carry?
Most days include researching new brands, reading the latest fashion magazines and following local bloggers to make sure I’m up to date on social media and fashion trends. I also do regular sales analysis to see what products sell well, because it’s very important to be aware of what your customers want and need. Some of our key lines currently include AG Jeans, Bella Dahl, Chaser Brand, Current/Elliott, David Cline, Ella Moss, Freddy Jeans, Paige Premium Denim, Joseph Ribkoff, Splendid, Ted Baker & Vitamin-A Swim, to name a few. How do you curate an exceptional shopping experience for your clients?
I believe we offer a truly unique selection of interesting and beautiful things in an equally beautiful environment. Our sales stylists are friendly, very welcoming and passionate about helping you find something you’ll love. What is your success secret to owning a boutique? Timing, resilience and old-school values. The buying process needs to be a perfect balance. You need to be able to spot trends way in advance and have them be in your store at the right time, and in the right quantities. Entrepreneurship is also a rollercoaster: when it goes well it’s wonderful, but when it’s slow it’s important to keep your head up, be resilient and remember the tide always changes. The last and single most important thing I believe in is old-school good values, which my mom taught me. For example, we still send hand-written birthday cards, including gift vouchers, to our birthday club members. Living in a techy age it’s easy to mass email, but there is a disconnect there so we try to maintain a personal touch where we can.
Jeannie Champagne
Any advice for aspiring boutique owners?
You can’t ever truly prepare yourself for the journey, so do all your homework and just go for it. It’s very rewarding and worth all the hard work to do something you truly love every day. What still makes you so passionate about this business today?
Like Mother, Like Daughter: Both emanating effortlessly-chic California style, Jeandre poses with her daughter in front of the boutique’s new novelty kids clothing line.
I’ve always loved all things fashion related, so this is a dream job for me. It’s a challenging job, but a dream job nonetheless. There are still so many goals I’ve set for myself and things I would like to achieve for the boutique and in the industry. Final note…

How does your background in diamond cutting and gemology distinguish Liberty Diamonds from its competitors?
As a diamond cutter, I’ve got the edge to distinguish a good stone from a bad one, and the knowledge of gemology gives me the advantage to avoid poorly cut diamonds with imperfections that can compromise durability with everyday wear and tear. In turn, we can hand-select the finest diamonds that will truly be “Forever.”
Master Diamond Cutter David Lob (right) and son, Troy Lob (left), of Liberty Diamonds
You also work closely with your son Troy. Why is it important for you to pass on your passion and knowledge?
My son Troy came on board in 1999, straight out of college, where he focused his studies on business. Like me, he always loved collecting rocks that he found and was extremely interested in what I did from an early age. So in other words, he grew up in the business and excelled photography by TONY FLOREZ in learning gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, where he was the top of his class. He was passionate to learn more about diamonds, and he loved working with people. He now teaches me about the latest Master Diamond Cutter David Lob first became interested in the art of gemology as a trends and techniques, so I am very proud of him. young boy growing up in South Africa. After relocating to Southern California, Lob opened Liberty Diamonds, which has quickly become a gem of its own in the jewelry How do you strive to foster more of a “college classroom feel” business. What was it about diamonds that piqued your interest at such a young age?
I’ve always been interested in gemstones and diamonds, especially growing up in South Africa. When on hikes, I was the kid always picking stones off the ground as I truly enjoyed collecting gems and learning about how they could be made into jewelry. What led you from a career in diamond cutting to opening Liberty Diamonds?
While in South Africa, I was contacted by the largest international diamond firm in the world at that time, and they gave me an opportunity to be the Lead Cutter in their offices in San Clemente, California. As I wanted to give my two young boys the best opportunity possible, my wife and I decided to take the coveted position in California and relocate from our home town of Johannesburg, South Africa. During the recession in the early ‘80s, the firm closed up shop. This gave me the opportunity to purchase the right tools and hire the best cutters in the USA to open Liberty Diamond Cutters in 1982. With our expertise in diamond cutting, we became the premier diamond cutters in the United States. With a little pressure from my wife, we hired a Master Jeweler and started manufacturing fine jewelry. As we cut our own diamonds and imported directly from the source, our prices could not be beat for the quality, experience and services we offered. Eventually we opened our doors to the public and became “Liberty Diamonds,” though we still stay true to our roots and cut on a regular basis in the OC location. 50

Unlike most jewelers, we do not use commissions as we do not want a heavy pressure sales atmosphere. Instead our team is comprised of gemological experts with years of experience in the jewelry industry. We have nothing to hide and we truly want the client to make the right educated choice when choosing a diamond that will be in their family for hopefully generations to come. This is a team effort with a teacher (the gemologist) and a student (the client), that way we can educate you on what to look for and what to avoid, and in turn the client can make an educated decision in a low-pressure atmosphere. How do you work with clients throughout the custom design process to ensure their vision is realized?
We have a team of award-winning designers that are truly the best at their craft. Cristina Pucci, our head designer, does the CAD renditions and works hand-in-hand with the client and our jewelers to make sure the project is executed to perfection. Anyone can come in with an idea, Pinterest page or pictures and we can guide even the most discerning client in the best course of action to bring their idea to fruition.

Argentina Dream Dance, drink and soak up the arts in Buenos Aires—the jewel of South America WRITTEN BY JENNY PETERS PHOTOS COURTESY OF JENNY PETERS & HOTEL CLASICO

uenos Aires. These two words conjure up visions of tango dancing in the streets, sophisticated dining and Eva Peron standing on the balcony of the Pink House singing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” The wife of Argentina’s former president, Juan Peron, is long gone, yet fans of the famed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical based on her life, Evita, will find memories of her easy to summon while gazing up at the balcony of the Casa Rosada (aka “Pink House,” the country’s presidential mansion), from where she loved to address the porteños (citizens) of her city. Truly, no trip to Buenos Aires is complete without a wander across the Plaza de Mayo for a look at this pretty in pink landmark and, nearby, the majestic Catedral Metropolitana (Pope Francis’s former seat). Must-see visits also include Teatro Colón, the massive opera house and arts theater, along with the incredible tombs of Recoleta Cemetery, where Evita Peron

herself and many other of the city’s wealthiest are buried. All are in the storied and posh neighborhoods of Monserrat and Recoleta, home to haute couture shopping, the elegantly modern Four Seasons Hotel and El Ateneo Grand Splendid, the eye-poppingly grand theater built in 1919 that has been transformed into a huge bookstore. But it is in the more recently formed barrios (neighborhoods) in Buenos Aries, known as the “Jewel of South America,” where some really exciting things are happening in the arts, fashion and culinary scenes. Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood are two hot spots, where Hotel Clásico—the newest boutique hotel from Adolfo Suaya, the Argentine chef/hotelier/entrepreneur known for Casa Suaya Hotel, in Uruguay, and a string of popular L.A. restaurants including Gaucho Grill and Dolce— has made its home.
(opposite, clockwise from far left) Hotel Clasico’s comfortable, eclectic decor makes it a lovely Bs.As. home base. (this page) El Ateneo Grand Splendid, the theater turned bookstore. A lovely tomb sculpture at Recoleta Cemetery. The Teatro Colón opera house. Angels look over the dead at Recoleta Cemetery.
Hotel Clásico is a relaxed and luxurious place, a charming 32-room inn filled with thoughtful touches and amenities. The hotel boasts a beautiful two-bedroom, three-bath penthouse with a huge balcony as well as Mooi, the popular dining spot helmed by chef Jessica Lekerman, who is lauded for both her food and pastries. At this very personal place, the staff is exemplary; they immediately learn your name and go out of their way to guide you through the nuances of Argentinean living, including the slightly mysterious ins-and-outs of exchanging dollars for pesos via the “blue market,” which usually nets tourists 30 percent more than changing money via a bank. Regardless of how money is exchanged, Americans will find that their dollars go far in Buenos Aires. The previously mentioned Palermo Hollywood and Palermo Soho areas near Hotel Clásico are the perfect places to splurge, with lively bars and restaurants dotting the streets, as well as numerous unique boutiques and interesting art galleries, all making for ideal days. Begin with a stroll, then stop for a leisurely
lunch and a bit of browsing before making another stop at a sidewalk café for a cup of mate tea or glass of Malbec from Mendoza. Wander on for more shopping—check out DAM and Agostina Bianchi for chic handmade women’s clothing—or simply meander down the tree-lined, cobblestoned streets, marveling at murals that pop up in unexpected places along the way. Palermo Hollywood is so named for the film and video production houses that have proliferated in the area over the last few years; it’s now where the creative class of porteños come to work and stay to play. Surprisingly, the neighborhood is full of Asian-fusion and Peruvian-Japanese restaurants— there’s even a traditional British fish-and-chips joint called Chipper in this eclectic barrio. Naturally, there are also traditional Argentinean eateries mixed in, with menus chockablock with national pride—steak and asado (other meats), all cooked on an open-fire barbecue. Later, the night comes alive here, with nightclubs, speakeasies and pubs drawing out the neighborhood’s sophisticated denizens for a drink and a dance. To find tango dancers in the street (hoofing it for tips), head across town to the barrio of San Telmo on Sunday, when the area filled with antique shops and cafes presents its weekly market throughout the streets. This is where the dancers congregate. Or, find a more refined version of Argentina’s national dance at Rojo Tango, a breathtaking nightly dinner show held at the Philippe Starck-designed Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero (yet another interesting barrio in the city). Be sure to dance your way to one more barrio before you leave: the incredibly visual arts district, La Boca, filled with brightly-hued buildings along the Caminito (main street), teeming with shops and restaurants, as well as fascinating murals, giant papier-mâché people and clever art installations throughout the area. Tango dancers take to both the streets and the clubs here, and the famed soccer stadium La Bombonera is just a few steps away, where Lionel Messi and other acclaimed futbol players have represented Argentina in international matches. La Boca is a lively place with surprises around every corner—which also describes the whole city of Buenos Aires. It truly is a jewel of a place.

hen realtor Summer Lynne Perry first met high-end custom home builder/developer Scott Cross at a coffee shop on Balboa Peninsula in 2011, she had just purchased a newly constructed home nearby and was seeking answers to some lingering questions she had about the dwelling. Shortly thereafter, the pair met up at Perry’s home to address her concerns.
“I had just passed my broker’s exam and had recently hung my license with Surterre Properties, so I thought it would be an appropriate time to let him know that if I could do anything to help him real estate-related in the future, I would love the opportunity,” remembers Perry. About a month later, she got her chance. Cross, who was building a new home for his dad in Irvine Terrace, referred Perry for an interview. Adding to her successful repertoire that year, she got the job—her first $6 million listing, which she sold in record time.
That’s when their professional relationship began to bloom, and the twosome have collaborated ever since; with Perry scouting and pitching promising new and off-market property listings to Cross, who works out the costs of each dwelling, devising the necessary margins and coming up with an offer price. Then Cross sets out to build grand properties with stylish finishes that appeal to the masses, while Perry softly markets and lists each property once the firstfloor walls go up. “Summer and I work together like brother and sister...without the bickering,” says Cross, longtime owner of SC Homes, which builds mostly in Newport Beach. “She knows what I look for and what I can do to properties; she has a great vision, which is a quality most don’t have.”
Interiors
While Perry maintains that Cross is the brainchild behind the builds, complete with a keen eye for trending design, he often turns to the creative agent for help setting up design gallery appointments or for feedback on what she’s seeing in other homes selling nearby. He also typically sends her copies of the floor plans before they are submitted for approval, gleaning her advice on what might be missing or in the wrong spot.
“It’s nice, because before I sold real estate, I worked for K. Hovnanian Homes, where I received a degree in light construction and development management,” Perry says. “So, having opportunities to be a part of the design process with a custom builder reminds me that getting that extra certification offers a unique selling proposition over some of my competition. I love that I still get to review and read plans every now and again.”

Interiors For the pair’s most recent project, they settled on a large lot in Corona del Mar, then proceeded to tear down the previous home to make way for a larger abode with a split-level view. The result: a stunning yet rustic 2,800-square-foot, three-level modern farmhouse-style home at 318 Poppy Avenue, completed spring of 2016, with additional help from local architect Mark Teale, of Costa Mesa-based Teale Architecture. Listed for $4.49 million, the five-bedroom, five-bath residence instantly exudes the charm and genteel lifestyle of the South with its exterior white pillars and sprawling porches, while the interior sports custom design elements such as quartz countertops; light-gray, hand-stained split-finished cabinetry; a dramatic floor-to-ceiling stacked limestone fireplace; and an open, spacious chef ’s kitchen, along with a combination of French white oak hardwood and natural stone throughout the home and coordinating designer marble tile in the baths and laundry room.
The shortlist of standout features includes a striking and expansive living, kitchen and dining room area with Fleetwood pocket doors opening onto a deck boasting views of Newport Coast to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south; an inviting rooftop deck; and a front entry featuring a concrete walkway flanked by shallow ponds and fountains. “I think we make a good team because we ask each other a lot of questions about designs and floor plans, what’s happening with other homes we are working on or selling/remodeling, finishes, styles and more,” Perry says. “It
is a very transparent relationship; we both work really hard doing what we do separately, so when we have the opportunity to work together, there is a mutual respect for each other’s time and commitments to other clients.” So far, their track record has been quite successful. While some of the larger homes in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach have been on the market for more than 365 days, Cross and Perry have been lucky to presell or sell most of the homes they have worked on together in the area in about 45 days. As for what’s ahead for the dynamic duo, they are now working on their first duplex project south of Coast Highway, a new two-level home in Cameo Highlands, as well as an approximately 8,600-square-foot trophy estate on Camden Drive in Cameo Shores (complete with a 2,500-squarefoot garage and “amenities like you wouldn’t believe,” Cross says) that they plan to list for $12.9 million. “Watching 4525 Camden Drive come to life has been an enchanting experience,” says Perry. “Cameo is one of my favorites in Corona del Mar because of its prestige (both in Shores and Highlands), and the sunsets from the view lots are simply some of the best we have to offer here in Newport Beach.” When it comes to this specialized team, one thing’s for sure: Orange County denizens can continue to count on them to concoct many more top-of-the-line housing options in the years to come. Your move.

VILLA TOSCANA A sprawling estate thoughtfully designed to entertain, with miraculous views and loads of room to move, leaves a lasting impression

he moment one enters the secluded property through private gates and meanders down the expansive cobblestone drive toward the home it hosts, water notes from a nearby fountain and sweet hints of orange blossoms and herb aromas swept in by subtle ocean breezes pleasantly awakens the senses. Only then comes the realization that one has arrived someplace truly special.
Stately situated on more than an acre atop one of the tallest peaks in all of North Tustin, which affords 180-degree panoramas from the glistening city lights of Los Angeles to the shimmering sea near Catalina Island, is the magnificent, contemporary Tuscan-style estate, Villa Toscana.
Interiors
“Passion exudes in the understated elegance of this home and is a tribute to the owners who created this grand yet comfortable home, encompassing the peaceful amenities of the view, the grounds and the home in every detail,” says realtor Kris Wells. “It is the epitome of why people choose North Tustin and a privilege to be a part of showcasing this home and finding the future owner.” Verdant gardens, pavilions, vine-covered arbors and whimsical pergolas frame the fully-fenced, picture-like premise enfolding the 7,500-square-foot, five-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath home at its heart. The setting truly transports, whisking one to a place reminiscent of northern Italy, where relishing in tranquility and the authentic allure of the natural environment is requisite. The arbors here foster a splendid place to perch while lost in wafts of wind breezing through the trees, bestowing a magical sense of romanticism ideal for an intimate celebration or ceremony.
But before the house was even finished, the fall of 1997 saw the Philharmonic Society of Orange County approach its homeowners—philanthropists Dr. John Maggiano, a prominent retinal physician, and his wife, Cheri—about having the home take part in the 1998 Philharmonic House of Design, a monthlong home tour that raises funds for youth music education. It didn’t take much for the Maggianos to accept the idea with open 80

arms. “When they said they usually raise a quarter of a million dollars for children in Orange County… from that one event, that one month home tour, it gave us goosebumps,” says teary-eyed Cheri. “We said, ‘When could we ever do something like that?’” After 10 years of planning, two El Niños, and loads of construction, the home was completed with architectural integrity in 1998. Its emergence revealed an elegant warmth, with innovative appeal and grand use of space and functionality— and just in the nick of time, too. “We didn’t know how long it was going to take to be done, but it literally came together the night of the black-tie dinner for 300 people, that was one of their

fundraisers,” recounts Cheri. “We literally backed our way out of the driveway taking trash at 5pm when the event started at 6pm.” After wondering whether they’d have power that day or if all the pieces would come together, Cheri recalls it being somewhat of “a miracle.” Shortly thereafter, designers began embellishing the home’s interior with paint and furnishings; the Maggianos changed some décor touches after the tour was over, but kept several others intact (and so loved others that they still remain). Inside, the scheme displays an opulent palette of genial and intense bright hues inspired by the Mediterranean, as well as a plethora of lavish
stone flooring throughout, all complemented by dramatic windows capturing a spectacular outlook. The bountiful, open-space plan on the first floor encompasses capacious living and dining areas with sky-high vaulted ceilings and clerestory windows; a chef ’s dream kitchen with a darling walk-in pantry featuring a floor-to-ceiling rolling ladder; and a singular wine room. A rarity in most homes, this kitchen boasts three islands—prep, cooking and a hibachi-style cooktop (also referred to as the “benito bar”)—and an imported Pasquini woodburning pizza oven (actually located inside the kitchen).
Whether they’re curating a dinner for themselves or one auctioned

at a local charity event, the Maggianos enjoy entertaining and maximizing all the spaces of their home. “Sometimes we start with champagne and crostini in the living room, then we might take [guests] to the wine cellar, then come [into the kitchen]… then we might go outside for dinner at sunset,” explains Cheri about a progressive dinner. “We just move around the house.”
Especially unique to this residence is the wine room. It’s not only a two-stage cooling and humidity-controlled space to store wine, but also serves as a sophisticated setting to host up to eight people for dinner and cocktails—all while enjoying dramatic city vistas through an oversized glass window. Adjacent to the wine room is a powder room with a faux wall vanity (inside is a glass panel that looks directly into the wine room) that, over the years, has served as a fun and entertaining conversation piece. “We’ve had a few people open this up when we’ve had parties and be surprised,” says Cheri. In any scenario, all of these cleverly designed components invite a quintessential milieu for lighthearted soirées that spill on to the terrace or intimate dinners with family and friends that end by the fire.
10-person spa, or an expansive lawn area flanked by a sport court for basketball or tennis, a five-burner barbecue, and heaps of lavish gardens and towering trees. Also on property is a 240-squarefoot pool house with a shower and changing rooms; vegetable planters; and abundant fruit trees, such as avocado, apricot and myriad citrus varieties.
Whether one is preparing for a large party or reading a book alone in the secret garden, this home augments any occasion, big or small, creating memories to last a lifetime.

The luxurious master, replete with a stone fireplace, frescoed walls, rich wood and muted travertine, also includes a substantial bathroom with a spa tub and dual vanities; a quaint area seemingly curated for a massage, yoga or meditation; and a sitting area with a fireplace posing as the perfect atmosphere to relax and unwind. All of the rooms render a spacious feeling, with ample-sized walk-in closets, high ceilings and verandas that extend toward breathtaking views. Another of the house’s unique hallmarks is a tremendous amount of proper storage space. For a residence of this size, and ultimately what it’s built for—to host and entertain—the homeowners truly paid strategic attention in creating enough area for one to work on projects and tidily store the likes of party linens and holiday décor in large closets and built-in cabinetry.
The abode’s outside environ equals the loveliness of its interior. Interiors here are many people who aspire to live among the beach cities in Southern California, where daily sunshine gleams brightly off crystal blue waters and endless seaside activities abound. While there are a plethora of beautiful coastal communities to occupy, few have the opportunity to reside in one of the most paramount neighborhoods in Newport Beach— Peninsula Point. Its location, mere miles from Balboa Village, Fashion Island, Corona del Mar and John Wayne Airport, paired with around-the-clock views of Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean, makes it an awe-inspiring retreat. Idyllic climes and sand-filled days aren’t the only characteristics that make this quaint town so charming—it’s steeped in history, too.
Balboa Peninsula, whose namesake derives from Spanish Explorer, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, one of the first Europeans to reach the Pacific from the New World, was originally home to shipping business McFadden Wharf in the late 1800s, otherwise known today as Newport Pier. Not much later, in the early 1900s, a change in land ownership and new developments progressed the area into what is seen today: natural allure encompassed by a mecca of unique residential and recreational architecture, including Newport Beach’s oldest, and likely most well-known, historical landmark, the Balboa Pavilion.
“Balboa’s Peninsula Point is magical. You are surrounded by water and all that it offers; surfing, paddle boarding, world class fishing and boating with friends,” says Chris Moreno, real estate agent for Surterre Properties. “The Peninsula Point association offers a private bay beach and boat dock, chili cook-offs and 4th of July family fun and parade. This is the best Newport Beach has to offer.” The Peninsula is roughly three miles long and can be accessed via a bridge on the north end or by a short ferry ride through the heart of the bay—a simple pleasure, a springboard, really, that leads

one to the lifestyle—and the home—that awaits. Head south on the Peninsula from either point and the streets become hushed and less populated, bringing to light the pristine and well-manicured walkways, until one reaches the end point, where the coveted waterfront real estate of 2254 Channel Road stands.
Built by Christiano Homes and architected by Frank Wen, this newly remodeled four-bedroom, four-andone-half-bath, soft contemporary dwelling, whose interiors can be credited to designer Sheldon Harte, seamlessly inspires a quintessential mélange of luxury and beach-style living. The smart home, sketched to capture sprawling hillside and water views, coupled with its sophisticated craftsmanship, is distinguished by a traditional yet strikingly modern façade. Dark shingles contrast with sleek white wood panels, smooth stucco walls, and a singular wood garage door with frosted glass in-lays complemented by industrial brass lighting fixtures, evoking elegance and charm while also staying true to the environment. An inviting, light-filled courtyard with a serene,
wood-paneled wall fountain and cobblestone pavers lures one to the home’s entry: a dark mahogany door accented with opaque glass panels (echoing a similar design to that of the garage door) that allow natural luminescence to flow into the house while still maintaining inner privacy. Upon entering, a geometric stone display integrated into hardwood flooring cleverly outlines the foyer, juxtaposing an organic and elegant feel without being too formal. From here, the wood floors continue, with long panels extending through the living areas toward the bay. From every vantage point, the first floor, beautifully tempered with opulent touches, including riglet baseboards, seamless door frames, custom window treatments and soaring ceilings, affords magnificent views. The open floorplan great room, where family and friends most often gather, encompasses a highfunctioning, top-drawer kitchen fitted with custom walnut cabinets and resplendent stonework by Concept Studios; a formal living room highlighted by a lustrous stone fireplace, cone lighting and recessed ceiling detail;

There’s also a spacious office with a sitting area and flatscreen television. Although this room almost appears out-of-sight, its glass walls facing the bay, oversized windows and a whimsical wall aquarium that adjoins the space to the living area, subtly maintains privacy while also keeping one aware and connected to the rest of the house. From the living and dining area, wall-to-wall LaCantina doors open to an expansive glass-enclosed veranda leading to a private dock overlooking the bay to Corona del Mar, Little Corona and the Pacific. This exclusive retreat, undoubtedly one of the most prominent features of the parcel, exemplifies the realm of entertainment possibilities: sun-kissed days spent reading or enjoying music on surround sound followed by sunset strolls around the bay capped with intimate dinners on the dock illuminated by a night’s sky adorned in stars and twinkling lights from the city’s shoreline.

The second floor of the home features three vaultedceiling bedrooms, one with a separate bathroom and two that are en-suite. Complementing the light hues used throughout the bedrooms, the bathrooms mirror a similar pale palette, with streams of natural light cascading in from skylights and windows. Glass showers and the use of white tiling effortlessly foster a clean and modern aesthetic throughout each space. Also on the second floor, but on its own wing that’s accessed via a splendid Wenge wood staircase, is the bay-facing master suite with breathtaking panoramas of the ocean down to Dana Point. The master also features a grand walk-in closet with custom dark wood cabinetry, and a spa-like bathroom replete with skylights, a sumptuous freestanding tub and dual vanities.
Draw the blackout curtains before bed, then open them the following morning, waking to the picturesque sight of distant palm trees against blue skies and sailboats coasting by. With an atmosphere as beautiful and tranquil as this, living here is surely a dream come true.

HILLTOP HAVEN Updated to maximize the signature vistas beyond its walls, a lavish San Juan Capistrano estate is an absolute vision of a modern-day dwelling

ome structures seem to last forever. Even after years of wear and tear, and decades of style changes, they somehow manage to stand the test of time. This holds true for perhaps one of the most luxurious estates in all of San Juan Capistrano. Originally built in 1984, the home at 32275 Peppertree Bend was a hilltop gem in its heyday. But it’s a new era for the 12,500-square-foot stunner; one marked by new ownership, new construction and an update that preserved the structure’s existing architecture while also bringing into focus one of its most coveted assets— sweeping seaside panoramas. Where only a few spaces in the home offered a sightline to the surrounds, “Now, every room has a view,” says realtor Tracy Weintraub. And it’s absolutely grand.
It’s hard to believe that a home of this stature—nearly one-and-a-half acres of prime real estate on one of the tallest points in town—existed for so many years without maximizing the view. No more. Credit recent enhancements to strategic planning and the expertise of lauded interior designer Denise Morrison. When it came to creating an aesthetic ideal for the masses, her natural design eye and skill for combining luxury and comfort was a stroke of genius. “The whole idea of the house was to clean it up and make it more current, more transitional… make it appeal to a buyer 96
baskmagazine.com
whose preference was modern or traditional,” explains Morrison. “Through careful selections, we achieved that goal.”
Rearranging some of the old walls and implementing present-day appeal dramatically transformed complex spaces into free-flowing configurations compatible with a broad range of current lifestyle trends. Paradoxical combinations, such as the mix of antique and traditional furnishings, seemingly fit because the current feel of the architecture complements either type of style preference. “We mixed finishes intentionally,” says Morrison of the opposing hue combinations used throughout the home. “You’ll see a juxtaposition of light and dark… the oak floors, in classic honey tones, balance with dark finishes solidifying the organic-modern style.” To see how it all unfolds, one must reach the property by driving through a lush swath of spacious and manicured estates flanked with tall trees until arriving at the end of a cul-de-sac. From here, a long, private driveway leads to the home’s entrance, where its unique blend of languor and modernism immediately prevail. At first sight, one is struck by the awe-inspiring beauty and invitation of the front entrance: oversized steal-framed glass doors and windows open to a foyer featuring French limestone flooring and simple, white smooth-stucco walls. (Spacious white walls abound throughout, presenting an easy backdrop for showcasing art.) The multidimensional ceiling heights here imbue the space with a tranquil and airy vibe complementing landscape views of both the mountains and the ocean captured from large windows in the adjacent living and dining rooms.
Complete with ample white walls, a round chandelier and steel window frames, the dining room exudes modern sophistication. (opposite) The open, airy living room with built-in bar avails magnificent ocean and mountain vistas.
Interiors
Interiors Rounding out the palatial chef’s kitchen (above) are gray-toned granite and quartz countertops and cabinetry accented with Moroccan-style Ann Sacks tilework. (opposite) A spacious hallway with old beams adorning the ceiling creates a light-filled passageway.
Interiors To the left of the foyer is an expansive living area fit with European white oak plank flooring and a stone fireplace serving as the focal point. Scenic panoramas and roaring fires aside, a chic built-in bar replete with a leathered granite countertop and mosaic marble and modern-designed Walker Zanger tile bar back, naturally makes this one of the hottest seats in the house.
Just steps away, the dining room, availing its own remarkable vistas, intricate tongue-and-groove ceiling detail and the continuation of ample white walls, exudes sophisticated and streamlined appeal, versatile for someone who enjoys experimenting with color and design each season. A round chandelier and steel window frames subtly resonate materials used in the entry and living room. Adjacent to the dining room is the newly-configured kitchen. What was once a maze-like arrangement is now one palatial open space with cohesive purpose. Befit for a chef with five-star amenities, the beautifully-crafted space is complete with gray-toned granite and quartz countertops and streamlined cabinetry, accented with Moroccan-style Ann Sacks tilework. There’s also a generous-sized rectangular hammered basin that looks out a window to a veranda, catching an artful glimpse of a modern iron railing that extends toward the back of the home and peaceful valley beyond. An expansive hallway with old beams horizontally placed across the ceiling charts a light-filled pathway from the foyer to the opposite side of the house. Spanning the length of the hallway is a brilliant atrium
ensconced in sizable European-inspired steel windows that further broaden the interior perspective of several areas along the first floor. The atrium also features a quaint fireplace, presenting itself as a haven for afternoons spent relaxing under the sun or enjoying a glass of wine by an evening fire.
The selection of materials and attention to detail in each room surprises, including the extravagant master suite. In addition to a lavish study that features sophisticated herringbone-patterned wood flooring, the wellappointed master bedroom and bathroom optimizes the upper level. The bedroom, complete with wood flooring, a stone fireplace and sitting area, is shaped in such a way that the first thing you wake up to is the breathtaking beyond on view. The bathroom, enveloped in opulent, polished Calcatta marble with nickel fixtures and hardware, is paired with an all-glass, floorto-ceiling shower with an invisible drain, luxurious floating tub, and dual vanities adorned in Parisian-brand THG faucets. The master closet, which can be accessed from the bathroom or the adjacent hallway, surprisingly features more of the home’s signature majestic scenes. “San Juan Capistrano has a city ordinance, so you can’t build on a ridgeline,” notes Weintraub of the unaffected hillsides. “Peppertree Bend is the highest level in all of San Juan. Any time you see anything on the ridgeline, that’s another city.” There are four additional en-suite bedrooms in the home: one on the main level that can be used as guest suite or housekeeping quarters, and three spacious rooms on the lower level with walk-in closets, balconies and bluewater vistas. All of the thoughtfully planned bathrooms (and powder rooms) baskmagazine.com

throughout the house employ similar materials and hues (solid bronze hardware, gray- and blue-toned marble countertops and upscale tiles balanced with a natural color palette), while still symbolizing unique and classic appeal. A large theater room, with a mini bar and blackout window treatments, is also located on the lower level, and can be easily accessed via the multi-level elevator just outside its door. One of the main spaces of the original floorplan—a nearly 4,000-square-foot ballroom—remains, although its function is now as an entertainment mecca. With a built-in (indoor) basketball hoop, gym, wine cellar, juice bar, and French doors that open to a marvelous pool overlooking the cityscape and ocean views, this newly-purposed space undoubtedly augments an environ ideal for endless summer days spent making memories and swimming in pools of fun. From the overall feel of the home, the openness, and the warm and approachable aesthetic, it’s clear why it emulates not only sophistication and purpose, but also carefree style. “It’s been a fun project,” says Morrison. “It’s been a really successful project in the sense [that] the construction [and] design team are very cohesive, and they’ve given me a lot of trust, and a lot of ability to complete my vision.”
This trust has resulted in a residential revitalization that proves that some things—the best of things—improve with age.

RESTAURATEURS AND HUSBAND-AND-WIFE TEAM, chef Noah and Marin von Blom, recently introduced Restaurant Marin, a sophisticated yet casual eatery located next to their celebrated concept ARC at SoCo. Decorated in shades of blue and white, the modern-deco space features a mix of contemporary and vintage elements, including pressed sea glass tables, handmade Italian tiles and French pendant lighting. “The concept is meant to be fresh, modern and cozy,” notes Marin, who was responsible for the design of her namesake restaurant. Serving an all-day breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers guests such traditional staples as blueberry pancakes and lobster hash for breakfast, and a slow-roasted short rib dip for lunch. For dinner, a “Meat” section features classic meatloaf and steak frites, while a “Fish” section tempts with olive oil-baked salmon and grilled shrimp. Seasonallyinspired desserts, like apple pie, donut holes and crumbles, provide a sweet finish. With its modern dining approach and coastal-inspired California cuisine, the von Blom’s concept offers a home away from home for diners.

CASCADING WAVES, WHALE SPOUTS AND PLAYFUL DOLPHINS are some of the outdoor delights on view for those dining oceanfront on fresh, seasonal, French-inspired fare at Surf & Sand Resort’s Splashes restaurant in Laguna Beach. Arriving from the East Coast, talented Executive Chef Ron Fougeray has perfected his French techniques under James Beard Award finalist Pierre Calmels, of Bibou in Philadelphia, and 23-year, five-starrated chef Georges Perrier of the famed Le Bec-Fin, also in Philadelphia. Of his transition to the world of sunshine and gleaming beaches, Fougeray says, “Each season brings a fresh, new menu in the French style, but prepared discerningly light and flavorful.” For summer, guests can expect Crisp Spanish Octopus with chile coulis, Sicilian black olives and chorizo; Red Endive and Arugula Salad with curried cauliflower, chickpeas and pickled red onion; mouth-watering Seared Sea Scallops; and among dessert selections, a savory butter cake with lemon curd and raspberry coulis. Open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner, the restaurant also features an expertly-curated Chef ’s tasting menu, a full bar and an elegant selection of fine wine. From the rolling hills of France to the shores of Laguna Beach, the inspired cuisine found at Splashes is sure to satisfy.

LOOKING BACK
SWAN SONG
A local icon, Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre will take a bow after its much-beloved run
Looking Back
P
erhaps you saw Michael Jackson at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre? Or maybe the Grateful Dead or Miley Cyrus? Or did you make the yearly trek to the annual KROQ Weenie Roast? We’ve enjoyed Pacific Symphony Orchestra summer concerts held every season there since 1987, that is certain. The lovely, convivial outdoor venue—the largest amphitheater in Orange County with 16,000 seats—has played host to countless memorable concerts since it opened in 1981, but the 2016 season will be its last. Summer days and nights spent at the venue have made memories for the past 30 years, as locals and music fans from Los Angeles to San Diego converged on the vast lawn, armed with picnic baskets, folding chairs and binoculars, or made their way to the Terrace section, where awaited a comfortably padded place to perch. Regardless of your seat, one thing always held true: the sound system made you feel like you were in the front row, no matter what. “I love performing concerts outdoors, it’s just very exciting and so beautiful, especially at a place like Irvine Meadows, where the whole environment for making music under the stars is so special,” says Richard Kaufman, the Principal Pops Conductor for the Pacific Symphony and a 25-year veteran of presenting concerts at the venue. “There are so many memories, so many performances there—once, on a tribute to [the music of ] John Williams, R2D2 came on stage and actually brought me my music. That was a very special moment.”

WRITTEN BY JENNY PETERS
The amphitheater has always been an integral part of the Southern California music scene, even when things got a bit crazy, like the night in 1992 when Ozzy Osbourne invited concertgoers to join him on stage. The pandemonium that followed caused some serious damage to the stage and injured a few fans. But that was the exception to the rule, as every well-known rock, country, pop and alternative band came to entertain the always-massive audiences attending shows at this top venue in Orange County. “Losing Irvine Meadows is really unfortunate for the arts here,” Kaufman reflects sadly, “and a real loss to the thousands of people in Orange County who make it a part of their summer [fun]. I hope we can find another outdoor venue where we can do our summer concerts.” The Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre goes out with a thunderous crescendo this year, as acts scheduled to play include Bryan Adams, the Dixie Chicks, Duran Duran, Snoop Dogg, the Dave Matthews Band and more, with concerts running until early October. And classical lovers can celebrate one more season with the Pacific Symphony and Richard Kaufman at the baton, as they present five concerts beginning on July 4, including a “The Music of Michael Jackson” show topped off with fireworks. Then comes 2017. By then, the memory-filled amphitheater will have taken its final encore. But be that as it may, all of Southern California will forever sing the praises of Irvine Meadows.
