house in Southern California is typically more than just a place to live. Historical and projected growth has made residential real estate one of the most dependable and valued assets in Southern California. Amassing wealth through real estate ownership can be easier than most people think. Don Peart, founder and president of Union Choice Enterprises, has devoted over 20 years to helping his clients make the dream of real estate acquisition a reality. His expertise at capitalizing on the housing market has earned him a trusted reputation among the most discerning clientele, the American heroes who have vowed to protect and serve our communities. Peart has helped more than 5,000 sheriffs, police officers, first responders, union workers and others navigate the intricacies of financing their homes. For many buyers, finding a home is typically the easy part. Figuring out how to pay for it can be tricky. Peart’s banking relationship and qualification knowledge has consistently enabled him to guarantee clients funding. His follow through is so fastidious that he has even conferenced with officers during a stakeout, finalizing loan details to meet funding deadlines. His new book about building wealth through real estate, co-authored with renowned screenwriter Randall Frakes, will soon be released. With such vast expertise in the real estate industry, it’s not surprising that Peart was ready to team up with Gina Waggener, one of Orange County’s top marketing and branding strategists, and celebrity designer Nancy Ven-

goechea, to embark on his next venture. This newly formed dream team, along with their hand picked team of dedicated professionals, are set to pool their unique combination of talents and penetrate the luxury real estate market with full service funding and high end redesigns. The end result for clients will be millions of dollars of additional gains. The Union Choice team recognized an untapped niche in the luxury home marketplace. While staging homes for sale is a common practice among realtors seeking to showcase homes to the best advantage, the service of complete makeovers, intended to re-valuate estates to new heights is a relatively new concept. “In a high net worth locale, the before and after difference of a superior redesign can result in millions of additional dollars in the sale price,” explains Waggener, the catalyst behind the formation of this highly talented group. “We recently helped a client get upwards of an extra $10 million.” Vengoechea, founding principal of Vengo Design International, has redesigned estates for notable clients seeking to create their dream homes. Vengoechea’s meticulous eye for detail and ability to create spectacular living environments has earned her a top reputation among clients that include Hollywood celebrities, famous sports figures, and the international elite. Now those wishing to get top dollar for their estates can enjoy the benefit of Vengoechea’s talent, as part of the Union Choice dream team. Ask Vengoechea how she achieves these

lofty results and she is quick to share her signature techniques. “I find the best outcomes infuse the beauty of surrounding natural elements with the architectural and interior design,” explains Vengoechea. “I start with the exterior environment and create a seamless fusion using color, space, texture and light. The end result is a sophisticated and effortlessly organic harmony between aesthetics and logic.” Prospective buyers continue to be “wowed” by Vengoechea’s talent and consistently recognize the value of a home that has been uniquely branded by her design. Home owners are not the only ones clamoring to benefit from Vengoechea’s skill set. The team has been approached by real estate genre TV show producers and Art and Design specialty workshop organizers seeking to make high end redesign tips available to the mainstream. But for now the Union Choice team is staying focused on its intended marketing niche - maximizing wealth through real estate. Peart, with long standing expertise in the home industry, has seen real estate in Southern California consistently outperform all other investments and views the luxury sector at the helm of projected growth. With the help of Union Choice’s redesign service, that sector is poised to secure greater returns for those ready to sell and offer better options for those seeking to purchase the ultimate dream home. Those embarking on their first real estate journey will still be able to count on Union Choice as the trusted source to make the American dream of homeownership a reality. ■

’m fairly certain I say this every year, but I truly couldn’t be more excited about the holidays. I really enjoy all the festivities, the abundance of twinkling lights everywhere, the holiday décor and elaborate store windows, but what I especially treasure is the quality time spent with my family. Th is is a big change for me, but I’m so thrilled to make holiday cards (a favorite pastime of mine), read by the fi re with some hot cocoa, host a cocktail party and finally see The Nutcracker, featuring Misty Copeland, at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. SUSAN IRBY writer For her Table story featuring Trevor’s at the Tracks in San Juan Capistrano, writer Susan Irby details the beautiful job the restaurant has done of preserving the historic San Juan Capistrano train depot while simultaneously bringing a fresh energy to the heart of the city. “The expansive patio and outdoor bar is ideal for enjoying dinner while listening to live music, and the food is really good…it’s as simple as that!” she says. In fact, L.A. theater buffs should make the trek south!” Beth’s top three Shakespeare plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing

In this issue’s Looking Back column, Jenn Thornton focuses on the fascinating history of the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars. “I don’t think I have ever missed an Oscars broadcast in my entire life, so to write about the show was a tremendous amount of fun. And very interesting!” she explains. “We all remember the show’s big moments, but there is a great deal of history behind the production— and I do mean production—of which I was totally unaware, so I can’t remember having such a great time researching!” Jenn’s top three Oscar-winning films: The Godfather, West Side Story, On the Waterfront

When he’s not busy in front of the camera, multitalented model/photographer John Watkins also spends his time behind the lens. This issue, John traveled with bask Magazine to stunning Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, capturing the beauty and essence of Southern California living. “Spending the day there and watching the visiting crowd from all over the country lounge, relax and completely appreciate my own backyard, perfectly demonstrated how blessed we are for this lifestyle and environment.” John’s most coveted photo spots: North Santa Barbara beaches, Laguna Beach coves, inland San Diego’s desert

In her travel feature Finding Friuli, Michelle Lyn exquisitely describes her time spent in Friuli, Italy, which she describes as pure bliss. “From the warmth and genuine hospitality of the locals, to the incredible food and wine that is simply part of daily life, I admire the culture and lifestyle and certainly took notes on how to slow down and enjoy each moment,” she says. “I’m surprised the region has stayed under the radar for this long, but happy to share this newfound gem with our readers!” Michelle’s top three things to do in Friuli: indulge in a five-hour lunch, find a bar full of locals and join them for an early evening aperol spritz, rent a car and let yourself get lost in a small village— who knows what you’ll find!

In her home feature Seaside Luxury, Wendy Bowman recounts how, from the moment she drove up to this elegant seaside estate in Corona del Mar, she felt like she had been transported to a glamorous movie set of old. “I could just see a legendary movie starlet driving her convertible through the gates and into the motor court, and then sashaying through the front door and down the stunning staircase to her glorious master retreat for a quick respite before heading down to a secluded beachside cabana,” she shares. “Once rested, I envisioned her entertaining in the ocean-side parlor before heading off to an elaborate meal in the formal dining room then ending the evening on the home’s entertainment level, complete with an ornate walk-in bar imported from Europe. Such romance!”

ITG - getaway

A trip to lovely and warm Cabo San Lucas always feels like a fortunate contradiction. It feels far from home, but is only a breezy twohour flight away from John Wayne Airport. The 30-minute commute from the airport to the newly built Grand Velas Los Cabos resort, meanwhile, is scenic: a mesmerizing sprawl of rambling oceanside resorts amid rolling desert hills.

Greeting me at my destination—the fifth property for Velas Resorts— is what feels like my own personal entourage, but it is the site before me that’s most captivating: a dramatic, three-story open-air entrance and beautifully architected corridor framing a panoramic crystalline view directly to the ocean. Everything about this space feels lavish and luxurious. From here, I’m directed to a quaint sitting area overlooking the grounds with views beyond, while a concierge takes my information. With a frothy, fruity beverage in-hand, I embrace this moment of relaxation, take in the oasis not far below,

28

and surrender to what will be a few days of decadent indulgences.

On the way to my suite, I observe a surprising juxtaposition of contemporary design and traditional Mexican architecture. Walkways mostly light in color are earthy, unimposing and possess an adobe-like feel in contrast to a prominent and sleek gray staircase adorned with large, brilliant glass accents. Every space here exudes something sensational, including my accommodations, the focal point of which is none other than the ocean blue. (One sees the same striking scenario from every suite at the resort.) Punctuating the expansive, nearly 1,200-square-foot space is a private terrace. The feel is absolutely grand. The interior emphasizes and echoes the illustrious exterior aesthetic: bed linens and tapestries are soft and luxurious, with dark wood walls and glossy cement floors appearing more modern—special touches all complemented by nature just outside the door. With such a beautiful arrangement, I contemplate whether to leave my suite, ultimately conjuring the motivation for a dip in one of the resort’s oceanfront infinity pools, which is as replete as my suite. As such, my

daily routine begins with a leisure lounge poolside, under the warm sun, sipping a crafty beverage and noshing on ceviche, followed by a pampering trip to the spa before dinner. The Organic Blue Agave Massage is my go-to remedy for its ultra-relaxing and healing benefits, but the highlight of each spa experience is an extravagant plunge in the hydrotherapy pools. In addition to the resort’s impressive design and architecture, it’s of no surprise that there are also five unique and gourmet restaurants on the property: Cocina de Autor, helmed by two-star Michelin chef Sidney Schutte, whose artful cuisine is inspired by his Dutch heritage and travels through Asia; Piaf for French fare; Italian and Mediterranean resto Lucca; Frida, which serves Mexican food; and Velas 10, specializing in seafood and steak. Amat Café; Cabrilla, a fun ceviche bar; and Azul, just steps from the sand and great for breakfast, are casual dining options. Specialty libations are also abundant, with premium tequila varieties plentiful. But what I imbibe most is the vast array of wines curated by noted sommelier Don Pedro Poncelis Brambila; the selections are a pleasant surprise, with one to complement each of my meals.

It’s never easy to say good-bye to such a carefree trip, but I do so indulged and rejuvenated from an experience that may well become a tradition of my own.

“Every space here exudes something sensational,

Bixby & Ball

“I’ve always envisioned opening another location at some point—and after seven years in San Diego, the timing finally felt right to take the brand to the next level with a second store,” notes Betsy Bracken, founder and owner of Bixby & Ball. “Lido offers a charming and quaint shopping experience on the harbor that is very much fitting with our coastal aesthetic.” Besides the lovely array of products available in-store and online, Bixby & Ball offers in-home styling and design services to help customers create beautiful and approachable spaces—a shore thing, indeed! 3424 Via Lido #103, Newport Beach, CA 92663 949.791.8260 | BixbyandBall.com 36

Introducing Blue Marble COCKTAILS IN A CAN

Blue Marble Cocktails

W

hen Alan Miller, founder and CEO of Blue Marble Cocktails, can’t find what he wants in the marketplace, he creates it. His latest brainstorm is the hot new ready-to-drink, all-natural, ultra-premium cocktail company that in just a few short years is poised to become a multi-billion dollar entity. Miller is an avid sports enthusiast so it’s no wonder it all started with one of his many pastimes - yachting. “We got tired of keeping the bar stocked with various alcohols and mixers. The clanging glass bottles and process of having to transport them from our boat to the tender to the beach irritated me. So I began hunting for single serve cocktails.” Miller couldn’t find any that met his standards so

he did what he does best. He created a new business. With lots of research and development and the construction of his state-ofthe-art production facility, he was ready to launch his vision. The result is a full service operations facility that manufactures 2.4 million single serve cocktails per month. Each one is delicious and encased in a sleek, eye catching container, sporting the company logo. Varieties include many well known cocktails including Cosmopolitan, Screwdriver, Margarita, Bloody Mary and Mojito, as well as a few new ones, like his own Coconut Island, a “healthy” version of a Pina Colada.

Crafting a perfect cocktail was paramount to Miller. That is why his plant makes its own spirits and uses only natural juices. The alcohol is then distilled over a 100 times to ensure high quality. The result is a superior tasting cocktail and virtually no hangover. While the product is impressive, the growing client base is even more impressive. The top branded companies in the world are clamoring to get this hot new “no bartender needed” drink into their theme parks, sports arenas, music venues, hotel chains, casinos, air lines and cruise ships. A half a dozen countries have already inquired into franchises and distribution.

Two for the Show Keys on Main hits the right note in Costa Mesa WIRTTEN BY SUSAN IRBY

D

ating back as early as the 1890s and brought to prominence in 1933 at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans, dueling piano bars have long been making their mark. Two grand pianos, three or more expert pianists on a stage in a club with theater-like seating engaging audiences submitting songs, often on bar napkins with lofty tips… this is the dueling piano bar. This winter, Costa Mesa welcomes George Hasenohrl and his dueling piano bar, Keys on Main, which originally opened in Salt Lake City over 10 years ago. Of his vision, Hasenohrl says, “As a dueling piano player myself, I wanted to give the bar a nightclub feel . . . bigger, classier than the old-style bars.” As such, Keys on Main features a video wall and special lighting showcasing a duo of facing grand pianos on stage. “Attending one of our shows is more like going to a rock concert,” adds Hasenohrl.

Keys on Main

“As a dueling piano player myself, I wanted to give the bar a nightclub feel . . . bigger, classier than the old-style bars.”

Open to the public, Keys on Main offers craft cocktails and pub fare too, but the big attraction is the dueling piano show. With doors opening at 7 p.m, reserved seating fills by 8:30 p.m. At 9 p.m., the show—or showdown—begins and often goes until 1:30 in the morning. Catapulting the lively atmosphere to an even higher level is an evening’s audience, with customers also dueling it out with paid special song requests. Just when your favorite song may be wafting through the club, a competing guest may throw down more money for a different tune, thereby stopping your song in its musical tracks. An endless evening of musicians duking it out on the keyboards, with cheering crowds and cool music… sounds like a hit.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL/ SUGAR PLUM FAIRY Through December 24

It’s a double dose of holiday cheer when SCR presents A Christmas Carol, the timeless Dickens classic that brings 19-century London to life with Tiny Tim, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future and, of course, Ebenezer Scrooge! REFLECTIONS ON MONET Through January 21

Art aficionados have a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and splendor of French Impressionism with a special viewing of Claude Monet’s 1904 painting “Le Bassin de Nympheas.” In the artist’s never-ending quest to portray the constantly changing qualities of light and color in nature, he created approximately 250 studies of the lily pond in his garden at Giverny. Currently on display in the Gluck Gallery on the second floor of the museum, the mesmerizing canvas can be viewed alongside three Post-Impressionist works of art from SDMA’s permanent collection.

Beauty & the Bard Carmela Corbett returns to South Coast Repertory to star in Shakespeare in Love, the popular play based on the screenplay of the Academy Award-winning film AS TOLD TO BETH FHANER

A

ctress, singer and writer Carmela Corbett returns to SCR’s stage to perform the role of Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare in Love (Jan. 13-Feb. 10), the delightful, romantic comedydrama named the most-produced play of the 2017-2018 season. A dual citizen of the USA and UK, who divides her time between Los Angeles, New York and London, Corbett studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute NYC and attended The Juilliard School. Upon graduation from Juilliard, the aspiring thespian headed to L.A. to audition for film and television work, although she found her first professional success in theater. Corbett has appeared onstage in L.A. and in London’s West End, as well as on the small screen, most notably in an episode of TV’s Mad Men entitled “Severance.” We recently spoke with the lovely actress about her upcoming turn in Shakespeare in Love, a romantic feast that the Daily Telegraph calls, “A joyous celebration of theatre.”

17 and still in high school. I was called back and ended up getting very far in the process. The director wrote me a letter after my last audition and encouraged me to go to drama school and really pursue this career after training. That was the first moment that I thought, ‘OK,’ I can do this. Cate Blanchett has said that you only need one person to believe in you and I have found that to be true. Jeremy Herrin writing that letter shaped the trajectory of my life.

ITG - Shakespeare

She is a young woman in a man’s world. Finding her voice for the first time. Taking risks. Standing for something she believes in passionately. Falling in love with a man who inspires her, a man who encourages her. All these things resonate with me at present. Tell us about your previous experience at SCR.

Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice in 2012, Noah Haidle’s Smokefall in 2013, workshops and readings of plays by Steven Drukman, Julia Cho and Lucas Hnath. Everything I’ve had the great fortune of working on at SCR has challenged and inspired me. The community is vivacious and supportive; and the development and nurturing of new plays and playwrights is such a rewarding and exciting thing to be a part of as an actor. What was the defining moment that convinced you to pursue acting professionally? I auditioned for a play at The Royal Court in London when I was

baskmagazine.com

When I first moved to New York and started Juilliard, my mother and I watched one of the early episodes together. We were both just sitting there agape. What is this amazing new series?! The costumes! The actors! The elegance of the whole piece! And we had this moment where we looked at each other and she said, ‘Carmela, you’re going to be on this show—you do realize that right?’ I think we both knew then that in some capacity, big or small, that series was going to have an impact on my life. And it absolutely did. It was a dream realized. What play has had a lasting impression on you?

There have been many that have been poignant at different moments in my life. Ibsen’s A Doll’s House continues to fascinate me. Most recently, I saw Girl from the North Country at The Old Vic in London and was deeply moved. I think the profound thing about the music and lyrics of Bob Dylan is that it resonates in all ages and stages of life. Your reflections on returning to the stage at SCR?

I’m thrilled to be returning to work with [SCR’s Artistic Director] Marc Masterson and the whole creative team at SCR. Masterson gave me my first-ever professional job in the [theater]—working with him on Eurydice in 2012, so it feels perfectly full circle to be joining him on the last production he will direct there. It feels like coming home.

“The customer comes first. Having been a customer who purchased one of the first lots in Pelican Hill, I realized that this is a service industry where one organization can service all of a client’s needs, which is what we have created at M|W|A.” -Marcy Weinstein

REAL ESTATE

Marcy Weinstein & Rex McKown The distinguished duo behind McKown | Weinstein | Associates—a highly admired and successful agent collaboration at Surterre Properties—has earned widespread recognition for their experience, performance record and mastery of skillsets and strategies. Leveraging their focused local knowledge and power sales approach to lead in a highly competitive arena has invigorated and advanced the luxury real estate market in Southern California since 1991.

AS TOLD TO AMY ADAMS

Is there a professional philosophy that you follow? Is it one that you developed or was it inspired by a mentor?

MW: Success is having successful and positive relationships. If my relationships with family, friends and others are good, then I am too.

What does your track record tell us about not only who you are in the real estate world, but your journey to the top?

Agent Profile - MWA

REX MCKOWN: My philosophy comes from

my mentor Bill Holden: My actions can have three effects—positive, negative, or none. Choose wisely. MARCY WEINSTEIN: The customer comes first. Having been a customer who purchased one of the first lots in Pelican Hill, I realized that this is a service industry where one organization can service all of a client’s needs, which is what we have created at M|W|A.

What are the qualities of your work that you feel have made the most impact in this business? MW: The fact that I strive to be the most

knowledgeable person in all aspects of the real estate industry, and to provide this information to my clients to meet their needs. How do you define success, both personally and professionally? RM: I try to seek happiness in both respects.

Many times that requires an intense balancing act. In the end, if I have a positive effect on both my family and my clients, I’ve been successful.

What is the single most important takeaway from your career that you’ve learned thus far—and how has it transformed what you do and how you do it each and every day?

RM: Once I finally realized that I am not a party to any transaction and removed selfinterest from my actions, everything went smoother. It reminded me of when I became a father. Self-interest became secondary and my life became much happier. MW: You can never communicate too much.

What are the qualities you see in others— friends and colleagues—that most impact and inspire you? RM: Empathy and the ability to see the position

of another. Before you can walk in someone else’s shoes, you must first remove your own. MW: Anyone who can stay connected as they grow and continue to apply the work ethic that got them to where they are inspires me. Also, the people who strive to stay connected to the things and individuals who helped get them there.

RM: I would rather be lucky than good, but have found it’s much more productive to be lucky and good.

MW: That I have never forgotten where I started, and never forgot the goal. What gives you energy and makes you thrive? RM: I work in one of the few businesses in the world where everybody has the same goal: the buyer wants to buy, the seller wants to sell, and both agents want the same. If done correctly, this business can be a happy one for everybody. MW: People who are energetic and positive. Equally, the appreciation of this place, and the kaleidoscope of people around us.

What moves you to act—a cause, something creative, an individual? RM: I hate to say it, but seeing somebody wronged (including myself) sets me off. I become fully engaged very rapidly and work tirelessly to correct it. MW: A need, dancing, and, of course, my mother, Joan Robinson.

jewels. His client base ranges from the international elite to locals seeking the perfect stone at the best value. Verdult has been brokering diamonds for nearly four decades. He knows diamonds and has unsurpassed product array on display in his elegant Newport based showroom and his flagship Costa Mesa store. Winston’s Crown Jewelers houses one of the largest diamond collections in California. The available stones range in size, offering something for everyone. Clients who are ready to buy don’t leave empty handed. “Most jewelers don’t have the ability to carry expensive or unique inventory,” explains Verdult. “When a request for a large or particular stone arises, other jewelers have to reach out to their suppliers and may only gain access to one or two choices. The process could take a week or longer.

Most successful people didn’t amass their wealth by spending an extra $1 million on a red or blue box.” Verdult knows what his clients want. When a rare pink diamond or other highly coveted stone comes into his possession, Verdult will notify a selection of his

clients.

“When a special opportunity presents, I contact a handful of my longstanding clients, and end up making someone very happy.” But buyers don’t have to be ready to spend big bucks to be treated to a first class experience. In fact, first time buyers are especially comfortable at Winston’s. “Buying a diamond or any significant piece of jewelry should always feel special. Whether I am working with a newly engaged couple with a limited budget or a client with a seven figure price point, I want to make sure the experience is as special as the rare and precious gift being purchased.” Advertisement

BEYOND

A

mere 90 minutes beyond the gilded luster of Venice lies a melting pot of culture and gastronomy ripe for discovery. Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the northeasternmost region of Italy that shares a border with Austria and Slovenia, is a gastronomic gem that produces much of the country’s highly-sought wine, cheese and prosciutto. Friuli, as the area is more commonly called by locals, is easily explored by car and serves as the perfect destination to wine and dine the days away. Towns are close together and each offers a unique experience that represents the diversity of the region.

Upon touch down at Venice Marco Polo Airport, pick up a sporty Fiat rental to complement your quintessential Italian road trip. Head straight out of town and take the Autostrada A4, toward Palmanova. Stop at the first Autogrill you see for an espresso and a handful of Pocket Coffee (espresso-filled Italian chocolates) to stash in the car for later. The first stop on your Friulian getaway is in the province of Udine. A concentric city built in the shape of a star, Palmanova was designed to be a Venetian military station on the eastern frontier as protection from the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 16th century. Get your bearings in the center of town. The main plaza is a large circle with a handful of roads extending outward to the main gates of the city. The quaint town is small and proud of its history, as evidenced by star-shape emblems on everything from chocolate truffles to books to holiday ornaments. Visitors are welcomed with open arms, as they are few and far between. Brush up on a few Italian phrases if you can, but if not, a smile and the mention of where you’re from will surely elicit a warm welcome and invitation to eat or drink. Caffetteria Torinese, right on the main plaza, is a lovely place to sample decadent pastries. Nonna Pallina is the patisserie where you’ll want to pick up chocolate truffles to bring home as gifts.

yourself several hours to enjoy the experience, as true Italians do, living in the moment, taking time to connect with loved ones over food and wine. Be sure to try the grilled Venison, the pasta San Daniele, and Frico—a deceptively simple Friulian specialty (fried Montasio cheese) but decidedly worth every calorie. Moving on to Cividale del Friuli, check into Orsone, a boutique luxury property conceived by mother-son restaurateurs Lidia and Joe Bastianich. Close to their heart (and across the street from their family home and winery), Orsone is elegant and cozy, offering the perfect respite in an idyllic setting. Take time to explore the town-park outside the city center and walk over the Ponte del Diavolo (the Devil’s Bridge) that crosses the Natisone River, forming a picturesque ravine as you enter the town. Then head toward Cafe del Corso to rub elbows with locals over an Aperol spritz, the popular Italian aperitivo. Dinner back at Orsone is elegant and comfortable, especially if seated by the roaring fireplace. An international staff offers a perfectly choreographed service, expertly pairing Bastianich wines with each course. Best of all is pacing yourself to enjoy the ambience late into the night, especially since you need only to walk upstairs to settle in for the night.

For a change of scenery, La Subida is the perfect antidote. Deep in the hills of Cormòns, in an area dubbed the Collio, La Subida is a pastoral, family-run eco-resort that boasts a humble, Michelinstarred restaurant among cabins in the forest. Owned and operated by the amiable Sirk family, La Subida offers an experience akin to visiting relatives who take good care of you from the moment you arrive. La Subida’s rustic wooden cabins feature modern amenities and bring the outdoors in with floor-to-ceiling windows. Dinner at the onsite trattoria is a must, as the family makes most selections from scratch and offers an exceptional presentation of regional cuisine. Very near the border of Slovenia, this country-chic property is rich in culture, design and nature.

Beyond Italy

Next, follow your GPS to the town of Cormòns in the province of Gorizia to visit one of the oldest prosciutto making families in Italy. The D’Osvaldo family has been curing and smoking their hams since 1940, and the youngest member of the clan, Andrea, welcomes guests into the family estate. He articulately shares the history of the family business, started by his grandfather. In Italy, the two most widely known prosciuttos are prosciutto di Parma and prosciutto di San Daniele; but in Friuli, prosciutto D’Osvaldo reigns supreme. After showing visitors the curing room and the smoke house, Andrea gingerly slices some of the most delicate, melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto you can possibly imagine, best enjoyed with a glass of the family’s locally-made white wine. A few kilometers away, the Zoff family is producing quality cheeses from their farm boasting organic, grass fed redspotted cows. A peek into the cheese storage room offers a colorful look at and insightful lesson on why moldy cheese is a good thing. With your appetite starting to grow, La Frasca in Lauzacco is the next destination. A rustic trattoria owned by Valter Scarbolo, a local vintner, it just the place to indulge in a sumptuous 12-course lunch paired with Scarbolo’s namesake wines. Allow

Finally, no visit to Friuli is complete without a visit to Venica & Venica, the sprawling estate in Dolegna del Collio that is part winery, part B&B, and part Venica family home. More than 80 years ago, the family began growing vines and over the generations discovered a way to tap into the natural biodiversity of their crops, creating balance and a unique character in their notably complex wines. Giampaolo Venica represents the brand globally, introducing Friulian wines, while also acting as an expert ambassador for the region, which won’t remain under the radar much longer.

Rooted in Italian, Slovenian and Austrian history, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is truly unique when it comes to culture, geography and cuisine. It is Italy lesstraveled for the masses, but for food and wine connoisseurs, and those in the know (which now includes you), it is the country’s best-kept secret— yours to decide if you want to keep or share.

T

he “Inspiration Point” sign designating the turn-off point to access this glorious seaside estate in Corona del Mar is more than apropos. Taking a left from Ocean Boulevard at the marker and then driving to the end of a short street leads to a striking gated entrance that opens to reveal a five-level, French Normandy-style residence rife not only with imaginative details, but also with an Old-World charm recalling the days of ultimate romance. The handsome masterpiece, crafted by noted Newport Beach architect Brion Jeannette, boasts 7,000-plus-square-feet of living space featuring walnut and limestone flooring, designer lighting, Venetian plaster, numerous builtins and upholstered walls throughout, along with an elevator and ocean-view terraces gracing each level. Complementing the inviting Calvin Smithdesigned interiors are endless ocean, coastline, jetty, beach and crashing whitewater views, as well as private stairs to a secluded strip of beach.

Home - 3619 Ocean

“This home has never been publicly offered for sale,” says Kim Walker, who is co-listing the five-bedroom, six-bath property at 3619 Ocean Boulevard with Mollie Butcher, both of Surterre Properties, for $26.9 million. “Privacy is a standout; it’s the only privately gated property on Ocean Boulevard that’s not visible from the street and offers private beach access.”

Within the gated entrance lies a large, stonepaved motor court replete with ivy-laden walls, a water feature, olive trees and access to a three-car garage that also serves as the “brain” of the stuccoand-stone-clad home. Here, a storage space holds a set of water softening and purifying systems, while a control closet stores all of the equipment needed to operate the Smart home’s audio-visual, security and climate needs. Once inside the limestone-covered foyer, the focal point of this impeccably maintained home immediately comes into view—a dramatic spiral staircase that traverses each level and is a technologically marveling sight to behold from top to bottom.

One ascends the staircase from the fourth-floor entry level to the fifth floor to find the second of two master suites. Highlights include a wet bar with microwave oven, refrigerator and sink; a built-in reading nook with shelves; a sitting area; a spacious walk-in

closet; and a private terrace offering stellar views of San Clemente Island and the Newport Beach Jetty. A luxurious spa-like bath features custom upholstered walls, a shower with a rainfall faucet and a soaking tub. Travel back down the staircase, past the fourth floor, and the third floor unveils the home’s main living area. To the right is an ocean-view parlor with a stone fireplace that is ideal for after-dinner

Home - 3619 Ocean drinks and tea parties. Around to the right, steps lead down to a family room with a stone fireplace, built-ins, and doors opening to a glassenclosed terrace that serves as an excellent spot for entertaining and relaxing. Adjacent to the family room is a formal dining room featuring a beautiful recessed ceiling, custom distressed paneling, and a butler’s pantry with a sink and built-in Miele coffeemaker that exits into the home’s professional gourmet kitchen. This impressive culinary center is showcased by a beamed ceiling, Viking and Sub-Zero appliances (including double ovens, a refrigerated cabinet for beverages, a duo of dishwashers and a wine cooler); granite-topped counters; a massive island topped by a sink and a cast-iron pot holder/lighting fixture; and a separate breakfast bar/work station. An adjacent breakfast nook offers a peaceful spot to enjoy meals while watching the boats leave the jetty. On to the second floor, one encounters a laundry room with a sink to the immediate left of the staircase. Winding around to the right is a Zen-like bedroom (nicknamed the “Blue

Room” for its azure décor) with a walk-in closet, lovely view terrace and a full Jack-and-Jill bath that leads to yet another bedroom (this one called the “Green Room”), which also holds a walk-in closet with built-in storage, as well as a terrace and a seating area. To the right, through a handsome arched doorway, is the main master suite. A chamber that would easily double as a posh 1940’s getaway for an elite movie star, the room features a beamed coffered ceiling, a cozy stone fireplace flanked with sconces and built-ins, a terrace, a seating area and a custom entertainment center with retractable doors. French doors open to the master bath, which is highlighted by upholstered walls, a large jetted tub, steam shower with multiple sprayers and a rain showerhead and double vanities. A nearby walk-in closet features ample built-ins and storage space, plus a TV for watching the morning news. Traversing the stairs to the first floor uncovers the entertainment center of the home, with the first visible accoutrement a Napa-esque, climatecontrolled wine cellar with room for about 400

bottles, custom-finished walls sporting bits of straw, and herringbone and French paver flooring. This level also holds an elevated fitness room, but the pièce de résistance is a large media/ game room with an attractive wood-burning/ gas fireplace and lovely ocean views flanked by an ornate walk-in bar. Imported from Europe, it features a door with a decorative stainedglass inset from a European pub, along with a sink, refrigerator, ice maker, dishwasher and microwave. Also on this level is an en-suite bedroom that leads through double doors to a paneled library offering plentiful built-ins and a marble fireplace. Rounding out this level is another full bath featuring a fully enclosed steam shower and a door that opens to steps leading to a lower-level terrace with a spa and fountain, a secluded beachside cabana with fire pit, and to an extremely private beach tucked into the cliffs between two of the coast’s best beaches.

“Toes on the sand, privacy, elegance and location are just some of what makes this home special,” says Walker. “The house is timeless, and will appeal to the masses.” baskmagazine.com

T

his gorgeous contemporary home in the ultraexclusive, 24-hour guard-gated community of Pelican Point in Newport Coast yields many surprises. Envision an abundance of built-ins that almost eliminate the need for furniture; a hidden doorway that opens to reveal a set of stairs that leads to a loft playroom atop one of the bedrooms; an indoor pool flanked by sauna and steam rooms; and a massive underground garage. Not to mention beautiful golf course and coastal views from numerous balconies and a spacious backyard patio, along with direct entree to the beaches and trails of Crystal Cove State Park. “I love the fact that this custom home is a great value in the sought-after guard-gated community of Pelican Point,” says Hosana Saputra of Surterre Properties, who is listing the stacked stone and stucco property for $8.9 million. “I also love the modern interiors and private beach access from the neighborhood.”

From its location at 14 Pelican Point Drive—on the ocean side of Pacific Coast Highway, along the 11th fairway of the prestigious Pelican Hill Golf Course—the five-bedroom, sixand-a-half-bath home was built in 2001. Set within its more than 7,000 square feet of open and meticulously designed living

space are soaring decorative ceilings, Brazilian sandalwood and travertine flooring, maple walls, numerous skylights and designer lighting throughout. A handy elevator also provides service to all three levels.

Within the home’s gated entrance lies a lavishly landscaped courtyard that leads to its beautifully crafted front door. Once inside the grand foyer, one finds the main living level ahead. An office sporting an attractive built-in window seat rests on the left, while a resplendent living space with a cozy fireplace to the right is bordered by a formal dining room boasting a wet bar with a sink and a duo of wine coolers. Traversing to the rear of the home, one encounters a family room with a fireplace located adjacent to a spacious modern kitchen featuring a massive granite-topped island with ample room for dining and entertaining, along with Sub-Zero, Dacor and Gaggenau appliances (including a double dishwasher, built-in refrigerator, double oven, six-burner stove, food warmer and built-in steamer) and a breakfast nook. A doorway leads to a fenced yard highlighted by a patio that offers golf course and ocean views, as well as a fire pit surrounded by marble stools. An en-suite guest bedroom also is on this level. Ascend the wooden, spiral staircase to the second level and uncover a trio of en-suite bedrooms, all with private balconies and one with the aforementioned hidden stairs leading to a loft

playroom. Most notably, the spacious master suite features a seating area with a fireplace; a spa-like bath with double vanities, a Jacuzzi tub, a large walk-in shower with multiple showerheads and a water closet holding a bidet and toilet; and dual walk-in closets with skylights. For added convenience, an additional laundry room is placed directly outside of the master suite.

Rounding out this home’s special allure is the lower level—a study in luxury and recreation. Along with the previously mentioned indoor jet-stream pool, as well as sauna and steam rooms, this space accommodates an authentic Japaneseinspired tatami room that can be used for meditation and yoga with sliding rice paper doors, a game room and a light-filled karaoke room with built-in sofas that opens to a patio featuring a seating area. The piece de resistance? An almost 2,000-square-foot subterranean garage designed for hosting events (complete with a stage and screen) and up to six automobiles.

Home - 14 Pelican Point (clockwise from left) A formal dining room with a wet bar boasts a built-in banquette that peers into the home’s grand living space; the highlight of the spacious modern kitchen is a massive granite-topped island ideal for dining and entertaining; and a nearly 2,200-square-foot subterranean garage built to accommodate events and up to six vehicles.

Named for its owner, Trevor Baird, the restaurant illuminates modern cuisine while honoring the past and the future. “The building itself is a preservation of history,” explains Baird, “and our motto, ‘locally acquired, globally inspired,’ is in essence about preserving our future.” Efficient usage of water, fully utilizing the onsite garden, and locally sourcing ingredients are at the forefront of the restaurant’s environmentally-conscious approach. “Our wine list features all California selections,” says Baird. “But our cuisine embraces the globe.” Dine indoors or on the al fresco patio and bar enjoying scratchkitchen menu items such as the Taste of San Juan award-winning Vegetarian Meatballs of red quinoa, brown rice, herbs and Arrabiata tomato sauce; Ahi Poke Nachos with sesame soy reduction over wonton chips; the signature Bang Bang Beer Can Chicken with savory local brew jus and garlic mashed potatoes; and the Fig and Fungi Flatbread with balsamic glaze. Among the sweet endings are the Cast Iron Cookie and the Strawberry Shortcake.

illed as Southern California’s loveliest train station, the Capistrano Depot first opened in 1894. At the time, red brick was covered in white plaster to the top of the dome tower. Today, except for the dome, the plaster has been removed revealing the stunning red brick arcades and structures that are home to one of San Juan Capistrano’s newest restaurants, Trevor’s at the Tracks.

S

econd-story ocean views and light coastal breezes are a refreshing welcome from the bustle of Pacific Coast Highway at oak in Laguna Beach. The first restaurant from Laguna locals RoseMary Polenski, Jeff Liao and John Porrello, oak features a polished modern feel with a touch of sass. Helming the kitchen is well-loved Executive Chef Chris Tzorin, also a local, who says of his approach, “I just cook from the heart.” Anyone who has ever met chef Tzorin knows this is true. Mentored by his father, a well-respected chef formerly of 21 Oceanfront and The Ritz-Carlton, chef Tzorin began cooking at the age of 13, soared to executive chef status by age 20 and has made multiple appearances on the Food Network. “I learned American French cuisine from my dad,” he says. “Now, I layer my dishes with family influences and diverse culinary travels.” In opening oak, chef Tzorin and sous chef, Fabian Sanchez, perfected dishes for weeks at Tzorin’s home. “The restaurant was under construction; we tested recipes in my living room until we perfected the ones we loved,” recalls chef Tzorin. “We set a goal to Floss—to keep the cuisine fresh, local, organic, sustainable, and seasonal whenever possible.” Must-haves are the Local Albacore Stack with soy, siracha, honey, and lime with mango tahin; the oak Burger of wagyu beef, jack cheese, tomato and onion; Pork Belly Tacos with Asian pickled cabbage and lime crema; and, off the menu, the Octopus Frittata, marinated bliss perfectly prepared in open-face omelet style. Dessert selections, meanwhile, derive inspiration from Tzorin’s 8-year old son, with the Oreo Cookie Crème Brulee and the Doughnuts ‘n Ice Cream quickly becoming classics.

grew up here,” shares Hasty Honarkar, who co-owns the Royal Hawaiian with her dad, Mo. “The Royal Hawaiian has a rich history that many generations have enjoyed. We sought to restore its original heritage with a new level of excellence.” Having reopened in the fall of 2016 after a three-year hiatus, original tiki carvings from the restaurant’s fi rst opening in 1947 are showcased in the lush interior tropical garden, while a new Royal Hawaiian tiki canoe, hand-carved by the same artists, Bob Van Oosting and LeRoy Schmaltz of Oceanic Arts, takes center stage, suspended from the ceiling surrounded by bamboo and pili grass. Unique to the restaurant’s décor is Martinique wallpaper from artist Don Loper; the motif synonymous with the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. “It was important to embrace these legacy items both in décor and on the menu,” says Hasty. “Our menu celebrates the Polynesian culture in modern times.” Patrons can enjoy dishes made famous 70 years ago, such as the Hoison BBQ-Glazed Spareribs, along with new selections including the Hamachi Sushi with Meyer Lemon Ponzu; Ahi Tuna Poke with Thai Chilies and Plantain Chips; the savory Royal Hawaiian Burger of Kobe beef, grilled pineapple, bacon, avocado and cave-aged white cheddar; as well as gluten-free and vegetarian options like the Tropical Quinoa Salad with Cilantro Mint Lemon Dressing. Save room for housemade desserts, including the Chocolate Pot du Crème topped with vanilla bean ice cream and, from the bar, share the signature dark overproof four-island rumbased Lapu Lapu for two or the Cabang47, a London dry gin cocktail tribute to the Royal Hawaiian legacy.

Adds Executive Chef/ Partner Greg Daniels, “We wanted to create a place that we would want to hang out, and where everything that goes out to the table—beer, spirits, and food—has been sourced with care, and we’re proud to serve to our guests.” The “beer board,” which features 14 draught beers, with selections changing frequently, complements the craft beer “book,” organized by style. But libations don’t stop there: Haven Gastropub offers meticulously sourced spirits, including a broad range of whiskey, gin, and more. From the kitchen, chef Daniels shares, “We’ve always taken classics and elevated them while also presenting new creative dishes.” From the pork belly to the local yellowfin and the black truffle béchamel Mac ‘n Cheese, a testament to Daniels’ approach is the number-one selling menu item, the Haven Burger—a custom grind that is grilled and topped with pickled red onion, roasted bell pepper, wild arugula, Saint Agur cheese and garlic aioli. Yet, the burger that won my heart is the Haven Breakfast Burger. Created for the James Beard Foundation’s Blended Burger Project, it features 25 percent mushroom chorizo with maple coffee bacon, sharp cheddar and a sunny side-up egg. Other menu highlights include the Jidori Chicken Wings with mango-Carolina reaper sauce, Grassfed Beef Poutine, which is a melt-in-your-mouth haven of Stemple Creek Ranch beef, gravy, cheddar cheese curds, and pommes frites. For dessert, enjoy the HouseMade Doughnuts and Molten Chocolate Tart.

o matter how unforgettable the moment, from a jubilant and genuinely shocked Adrien Brody kissing an unsuspecting Halle Berry to Marlon Brando refusing his Oscar in protest, one show has it seen it all (including a naked man streaking across the stage in 1974): the Academy Awards. A ceremonial spectacle dripping in jewels, the prominent awardsseason ender is one of the most watched events in the entire world, where gorgeously garbed celebrities glitter in diamonds and dress but never outshine the man of the hour, Oscar. Now such a procession, one can hardly envision the Academy Awards in its infancy—a small dinner party held at the Blossom Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1929. A major hope for the affair was that it would in part lend cinema (at the time widely considered popular entertainment of a mostly tasteless sort) some much-needed credence and, in doing so, help Hollywood shake off some of its indignities.

But what began as something of a public relations exercise transformed into a genuine congratulatory gathering recognizing achievement in film. Morphing from banquet to broadcast, the proceedings hopped venues (the Ambassador Hotel, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Shrine Auditorium, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Dolby Theatre) and did what Hollywood does: entertain. Hosts from Bob Hope, with his largely unthreatening quips, to Billy Crystal, with his jokey opening montages, have dazzled audiences, while comedy giants Ellen DeGeneres, Whoopi Goldberg and Chris Rock have all taken the main stage out for a spin. In appeal for hipper crowds and indie cred, emcees like David Letterman and the inexplicable pairing of James Franco and Anne Hathaway are best thought of as experiments.

But controversy has always been part of the Oscars. Politics has found its way to the podium more than once; many celebrities have all taken the opportunity to use the platform to push various causes. Other outbursts have come from those simply overcome by the moment: Sally Field, named Best Actress for Places in the Heart then proclaiming, “You like me, you really like me!”; Cuba Gooding, Jr., announced Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire, then screaming his speech above the swell of the orchestra; and Tom Hanks inadvertently outing his favorite teacher during his Best Actor acceptance speech for Philadelphia. The Oscars has induced tears (Charlie Chaplin’s 12-minute ovation), inspired awe (Lady Gaga’s shockingly operatic tribute to Julie Andrews), and stirred disbelief (Rob Lowe’s song-and-dance debacle with Snow White). Cher’s getups, Jack Palance’s one-armed pushups, Leonardo finally landing an Oscar—it’s been year after year of golden moments.

Best of all, it’s all been live—even the most epic mistake in Oscar history: La La Land mistakenly named the Best Picture of last year instead of rightful recipient Moonlight. Only in Hollywood, where it’s always a classic. 106
