PRESIDENT'S LETTER
I
t’s hard to believe that six years ago, bask Magazine was born. The idea came to life during a lunch with one of my dear friends, and now business partner, Jolie Adams. We both shared the same passion of wanting to create something new in the media landscape— something that spoke to our community with beautiful, elevated, inspiring content. I’ll never forget that day at lunch and that conversation—the excitement, the ideas bouncing back and forth. And then, that “aha” moment: the decision to start a luxury lifestyle magazine. Little did we know what an incredible and successful journey we were to begin together.
Presidents Note
When we talk about luxury, I think one of life’s greatest luxuries is making time to lead a balanced life. That is the essence of bask: “Luxury in Balance.” It echoes what we believe—that ultimately, luxury is the freedom to live life on your own terms. Our goal is to convey that with each issue.
Prior to launching bask, I launched Surterre Properties 10 years ago with my partner Gary Legrand. We wanted to create a brokerage that didn’t exist in the marketplace. A place where our agents and staff would be a united team to share in the success of the company. A place where our clients would experience the highest level of service in the industry. A place to call home. We are so grateful that Surterre Properties has become a premier brokerage built with the utmost integrity and trusted by our clients to help them move—whether that’s across the street or across the globe. I sincerely thank you for your loyalty to both bask and Surterre, and wish you all the gifts of life that are important to you, which is our definition of luxury.

EDITOR’S LETTER
A Moment in Time
I
t’s no secret that I am related to the lovely lady pictured next to me. Therefore, I think I know her well enough to speak for the both of us when I say that this issue might be one of our best yet… abundant with things that touch us all, from beautiful architecture and design to fashion, history and exotic places for traveling and dining. The issue is extra special in another way too, celebrating the six-year anniversary of bask.
Its evolution began a few months ago, when one of our writers, Jenn Thornton, wrote a fabulous article about the history of Santa Anita Park and the champion Thoroughbreds that have run its course for the Looking Back column in the Spring issue. Needless to say, when our publisher Jolie Adams read the article, the floodgates opened, and she could hardly contain sharing with me all the fond memories she experienced as a child with her grandfather at the very same track. A month later I was invited to an event there, where I met Director of Premium Sales for Santa Anita Park Alison Gerali Wright, who, coincidentally, I’d also worked with some years back during her stretch at Montage. That day, Alison gave me a tour of the property, and I was completely in awe of how many acres it maintained—320 in all, with unobstructed views of the San Gabriel Mountains—and the art deco architecture, combined with regal interior spaces revitalized to maintain the feeling of decades past.
Edit Note
That’s when I knew—we absolutely had to plan our fall fashion shoot at the track. On page 66, see the magnificent acreage come to life with model Amanda Fields donning posh fashions from Saks Fifth Avenue, South Coast Plaza; dazzling jewelry designs by Liberty Diamonds; and spectacular statement-making hats by fabled designer Arturo Rios (famously known for also creating headpieces for Katy Perry and Lady Gaga). I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our male model in this issue, renowned jockey Ignacio “Iggy” Puglisi, who drove up from San Diego—where he, along with the other jockeys, horses and staff from Santa Anita spend the off-season at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (the two tracks share assets)—for the last shoot of the day. With 811 wins since 1990, Iggy’s entertaining personality and zest for life

truly shined. Little wonder that the Argentineanborn rider is accustomed to performing in front of the lens, having saddled up as a jockey in several films. The camera—all cameras, it turns out— clearly love him. For our shoot, Iggy took the reins, showing the work ethic that has attracted the many barns he rides for and the mounts he’s skillfully maneuvered into the Winner’s Circle.

Racing involves a fair amount of providence, of course—you can bet the ranch on the wrong horse or win big when the odds are long. Publishing requires a similar faith. The fashion shoot bridges these seemingly unrelated realms with a serendipity known to both. And if you’re lucky, it might even take you down memory lane too. Enjoy the glorious season ahead!

As fall is the foremost season for fresh fashion finds, Anne Mack shares all the upcoming trends and styles we can expect to see in bask’s Style Pages. “This year, I’m most excited to see J. Mendel’s Fall Collection of elegant and standout pieces using a combination of cobalt blue and ruby red colors; and Oscar de la Renta continues to be a favorite with the use of both bright and subtle hues in a variety of feminine silhouettes,” she says.
ANNE MACK stylist Vital to the American narrative are our nation’s natural wonders, which, for 100 years, have been protected by the National Park Service (NPS). In this issue’s “Looking Back,” Jenn Thornton pays wonderful tribute to the enduring organization. “As guardian of our national treasures, NPS is, quite literally, a keeper of history,” she says. “Few things have endured as long as the NPS, which, in this hustle of today’s world, is really quite astounding.”

WELL
F MODERN REINVENTION
or many years, the coastal area stretching from Corona del Mar to Dana Point was simply freckled with beautiful yet sleepy little beach communities. Aside from swaths of cottagelike homes picturesquely etched into cliffs along the Pacific, the main attraction was, in fact, the crystalline beach itself. Apart from the prominent Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, which opened in 1984, and a few other illustrious accommodations in Newport Beach, the only place to sojourn along this stretch were old-name hotels and quaint bed and breakfasts. In 2001, the St. Regis Monarch Beach was the first luxury establishment in quite some time to grace its neighboring coastline. With the arrival of Montage Laguna Beach, in 2003, and The Resort at Pelican Hill, in 2008, the opening of St. Regis Monarch Beach was a beacon to a new era; notably, one that helped usher the community into a luxury destination mecca.
A vivid backstory is requisite in order to fully appreciate the recent modifications to the pedigreed landmark. Today, under new ownership, the St. Regis Monarch Beach is now the Monarch Beach Resort, and its $40-million redesign has transformed the neighborhood icon into a modern-day oasis. From 400 revivified guest rooms and suites marshaled by LA-based and international designer Rodrigo Vargas Design, to five new dining concepts helmed by executive chef Collin Thornton, to a spa partnership with Miraval Resort & Spa, the re-creation is the ultimate composition of easy, luxurious enjoyment at its finest.
Wellness - Monarch Beach
The recent multi-million overhaul of the rebranded Monarch Beach Resort is nothing less than a crowning achievement WRITTEN BY AMY ADAMS PHOTOS COURTESY OF MONARCH BEACH RESORT
“We are thrilled to welcome guests, members and neighbors to our thoughtfully reimagined resort that offers a perfect balance between luxury and approachability,” says Ian Pullan, general manager of Monarch Beach Resort.
While its architecture remains intact and familiar, a sea of white walls and nature-inspired accents among spacious light and airy spaces seamlessly blend indoors and out, wildly invigorating the senses. From sight and sound to taste and touch, one easily embraces an early morning trek to the private beach for yoga, where the sounds of seagulls and waves crashing on to packed sand peacefully silence the mind and a salty mist air adds a layer of dew to the skin. Following, is a round of golf at the award-winning, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed course and, later, some of Stonehill Tavern’s mainstays to savor, such as the delectable Lobster Pot Pie.

Wellness - Monarch Beach
One key component to this reimagination: the arrival of the aforementioned Miraval Life in Balance Spa (its flagship spa is in Tucson, Arizona). “Expressions of our extensive transformation, anchored by the Miraval Life in Balance Spa, introduce guests to memorable experiences befitting one of the finest resorts in Southern California,” adds Pullan. With a Drybar salon, Deborah Lippmann nail suite, Miraval Spa Café and more than 70 holistic, meditative and coastal-inspired treatments, as well as access to nutrition experts, workshops and speakers, the new locale offers an abundant array of health and wellness activities for guests to experience.

True to form, it’s these amenities—and more—that make Monarch Beach Resort fit for royalty.

Village Vogue Alchemy Works and Harbor House drops anchor at Lido Marina Village with a Warby Parker showroom in tow WRITTEN BY JENN THORNTON

t took a village with a berth in Newport Beach to round up a top-rung roster of brands—Lido Marina Village. Among its now-open shops, which include Aesop, Steven Alan and Clare V (with Jenni Kayne arriving this summer followed by Le Labo and Serena & Lily this fall), is Alchemy Works Harbor House, the next-generation gallery and retail space whose black façade makes a strikingly modern statement against the sea of white residential structures within which it’s set. Co-founders Raan and Lindsay Parton characterize the shop as a “residential approach to retail, with merchandized corners and rooms in the house” featuring sleek lines, a neutral palette and wood elements for a decidedly SoHo feel. But where Alchemy really works its magic is with its merch, from heirloom jewelry, home accents and found objects to art, furniture pieces and in-house brand Apolis, all arrayed to urban-chic effect. Also inside Alchemy is OC’s first showroom of beloved optics brand Warby Parker, its vintage-inspired eyewear giving the elevated retail concept—in this case, one also prone toward seasonal residences, weekend pop-ups and, in the coming months, a wine bar and bottle shop for the ultimate retail wonderland—an even fresher perspective. 3408 Via Oporto, Newport Beach, CA, 92663 949.274.4636; AlchemyWorks.us

Albertini Italian Windows and Doors “Albertini adheres to the ISO European standards that are very stringent when it comes to energy effectiveness and the quality of materials.”
Having expanded its brand to the U.S., Albertini Italian Windows and Doors is making its name in the states without deviating from its roots, utilizing time-tested Italian craftsmanship to create a product of quality that is second to none.
How does it foster a client-oriented environment? Everyone in our organization understands that our customers have expectations. For us to be successful, we have to realize their expectations. This is done through constant and clear communication with all parties involved to completely understand what they envision. Uncertainties cannot surface when product arrives on site.
Albertini Windows What, specifically, about the windows and doors business makes you passionate about the industry? The flexibility and capacity to adapt, and the endless variations to the ever-changing architecture and design climate. That is what drives our creativity and passion.
What led you to move from Italy to the U.S. to open Albertini? Pride in the quality of our product. Moving to the USA gave me the opportunity to share and expand the Albertini brand.

Describe some of the brand’s signature materials and how they foster a luxury aesthetic. I would say our signature material is wood and bronze. We access woods from around the world that offer warmth to a home. We clad the wood with the most noble metal bronze. Bronze is architecturally stunning and captures not only history and romance, but also delivers timeless beauty.
How are you continuing the legacy and quality of the work that Albertini is known for in Italy, here in the U.S.? Since everything is still built in Italy, quality is not in jeopardy! Our fundamental objective and/or responsibility is to grow an effective dealer network. Finding the right people to represent our brand is not something we take lightly. They have to be custodians of quality, honesty and the tradition that Albertini is known for. Being part of Albertini is being part of a larger family.
Talk about the ways in which the company sustains its commitment to protecting the planet through environmentally friendly procedures. All our woods are from sustainable forests. Albertini adheres to the ISO European standards that are very stringent when it comes to energy effectiveness and the quality of materials. Also, all finishes applied at the factory are environmentally friendly. Albertini is constantly trying to innovate our production facility to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. How significant is it to keep abreast of the latest trends and technologies in the business? It is imperative to keep that edge by continued discussions with architects and designers who are visionaries. They truly are the catalyst for change; if they can dream it, we will do all we can to build it! That is what made Albertini the leader in our market. What is your ultimate vision for Albertini’s future in the U.S.? I would say that my vision for Albertini in the U.S. is to make my family name a household name!

Crawford Custom Homes
Dick Crawford, CEO/President
What sparked your passion for building and residential construction, and what sustains it today? Dick: Building and remodeling were a big part of my life growing up in my parents’ homes. I enjoyed being part of creating wonderful places to live, and my parents instilled in me tremendous work ethic, great values and a desire to learn from the trades. In my early career, I was mentored by my father; learning all aspects of construction loans at his savings and loan. He encouraged me to use that knowledge when I started my building business at the age of 25. My passion for building custom homes developed with each successive project and the focus was to build the ‘right’ way, with creativity, quality and integrity. Our team is aligned with these core values and we strive to build the extraordinary. It has become more personally rewarding to build these beautiful masterpiece homes for our clients and it makes us proud to call these homes our legacy.
What makes Crawford Custom Homes distinct from its competitors? Kimberly: Crawford Custom Homes is highly experienced and our team has vision, wisdom, knowledge and the overall organization that is unparalleled in building luxury homes in Orange County. We have been creating unique, sophisticated luxury homes in coastal Orange County for over 35 years, and many of our team members have three to four decades of experience, with several team members, such as myself, having been with the company for 15 to 28 years. The team has worked diligently through the
years and Crawford Custom Homes has earned a reputation for being a Master Builder. How do you work to create exquisite custom homes for your clients? Kimberly: Two words… We care. As a team, we foster positive and mutually respectful relationships with our clients, designers, architects, engineers and tradespeople; to be collaborative and to strive to have everyone bring their best talents forward for a highly successful project. With everyone working together, the result is extraordinary. How do you incorporate that “wow factor” into each home you build? Dick: ‘Unsurpassed Quality.’ We have created a ‘culture’ within our company, and with our sub-trades, of mutual respect, meticulous attention to detail and creative collaboration, which gives us the ability to bring out quality results. We often create a ‘can do’ attitude, making some design ideas possible from what seemed impossible or impractical. ‘Quality, Quality, Quality’ is the mantra that inspires us all to do our finest work for our clients.
Crawford Homes
As “Master Builders,” Crawford Custom Homes bases its blueprint for success on creativity, quality and client satisfaction. As the foundation for the company’s success, the business builds custom luxury dream homes in coastal Orange County the “right way.”

Kimberly Smith, VP of Operations
What part of the building process do you find the most rewarding? Dick: That’s easy. Seeing the smiles, and often emotional tears of joy, on our clients’ faces as they see their new custom home for the first time. They are overwhelmed with happiness as they reflect on the results of having their dream home become a reality. This culmination of effort by our building team brings us great pride and defines us as Master Builders.

Julie Laughton Design Build
Julie Laughton’s success in building and designing exquisite luxury homes lies within a strict adherence to the original plans. However, a move from bustling New York City to tranquil Laguna Beach, and the subsequent start of her own business, Julie Laughton Design Build, certainly wasn’t in the master planner’s original prints. Still, the designer turned contractor and business owner skillfully puts all her talents to work when creating completely custom homes for her clients. Here, the design maven shares her passion for planning, process and making her clients’ dreams come true.
JULIE LAUGHTON DESIGN BUILD 714.305.2861 JULIELAUGHTON.COM
What led you to start Julie Laughton Design Build? When I moved from New York City to Laguna Beach, I realized that working for someone else wasn’t part of my future. I immediately headed out on my own as a designer. Realizing my passion for design and working in residential led me to doing custom kitchen design. My expertise and professional background of working “in the dirt” with the biggest contractors in the world put me well ahead of the game by the time I got my contractors license.
Julie Laughton
What makes Julie Laughton Design Build a truly unique concept? It’s a one-stop-shop for homeowners. This means that you can get all of the design and construction done by one person and have a one-on-one experience throughout the entire project. What is the main goal you strive to accomplish while building/remodeling a home? Not only doing a complete transformation of the existing space up to today’s standards, but also making it timeless and bulletproof. I bring the house up to its truest potential and customize it for each client. Describe the scope of your work and involvement in the building process. Everything I draw in the plans is the bible, which we follow throughout the building process. Without plans there is no process. What is your personal favorite part of the process? I have two favorite parts. First is when the client, who usually can’t visualize the project very well, can
finally start to see what we are going to do. It’s very exciting when they can see it. The second part is turning the project over at the very end and having the client say, “Wow, I am not exactly sure how you did it, but it’s just what I envisioned!” It’s magical for them because when the process is over and all the workers are gone, they can enjoy their new space. The client’s hopes and dreams were completed. Your philosophy is “all great designs start with a good plan.” Will you elaborate? If you don’t have a plan, you don’t know where you are going. When there is no direction or planning, nothing usually works and it certainly doesn’t come out professional and polished. The visualization process starts when they are turned into plans. The plans are loaded with details, and all of these details formulate the process for execution and completion. How do you work to realize your clients’ dreams? I start from the very beginning, with the homeowners’ wishes and dreams. I go through an extensive interview process with them. Then, I extract all of the information I can from the client during our interview. I have them select pictures from magazines and the Internet. We go through all of the photos to find out what they like and don’t like. Through this process, we can develop their own personal style. Why is it important to be hands-on in the building industry? Every single thing that is done by the workmen is related to the vision and plans. It is crucial to the precision and quality of the outcome. I remodel for a living, so standing in the dirt with my men daily at the initial stages of the process is the most important thing I do on every job. Without my direction, the finished product would not be the same. During remodeling projects, there are unknown conditions. These are unique to every home and must be addressed. Any new or notable projects ahead? I have many new projects in Laguna and Newport. Each one is notable due to the fact that the client wants something that the house doesn’t already offer them. My job is to make the magic happen and ensure they get their dream home.
photo (left) courtesy of Tony Florez
What first inspired your love for building, and what prompts your passion today? While I was living in New York City as a post-graduate from Iowa State University, I worked in commercial design. Along the way, I also had the opportunity to do residential work. I had experiences watching master tile craftsman and custom cabinetmakers from Europe. I enjoyed working with them and building from scratch. It was also impressive to see their work ethic and what could be done custom. Today, I still enjoy the idea of customizing every home for the individual homeowner down to the last detail.

Pure Elements
Pure and simple, Rick Allen is on a mission to bring the freshest, cleanest product to the market via Pure Elements Water. As the company’s founder, he is more than a figurehead, he’s a game-changer, helping lead the charge for the highest levels of water quality through the most progressive systems possible.
PURE ELEMENTS WATER 2503 EASTBLUFF DRIVE, S206B, NEWPORT BEACH, CA, 92660 - 949.259.2561 | PUREELEMENTSWATER.COM
DESIGN + BUILD | PURE ELEMENTS + BASK
What led to the founding of Pure Elements Water? I had always wanted to run my own company and I was seeking opportunities early in my college days at USC. My father was responsible for creating the office coffee service industry, where coffee brewers are placed in offices and all associated products are delivered as a service. He was marketing a water filter that provided bottled-quality water for the coffee and office staff. I came up with the concept of installing this commercial system into a home to eliminate the need for 5-gallon glass (at the time) bottles and save money. With this concept, I set off on a journey that has been exhilarating for the past 37 years… What makes Pure Elements Water products distinct from their competitors? We design and supply custom whole house filters and feature a proprietary salt-free water conditioner. The Pure Elements conditioner provides an environmentally sound alternative to water softeners. Our exclusive Total Property systems create healthier home living environments, prevent pinhole leaks and reduce hard water problems. Special technology also protects and beautifies pools, spas, water features and landscaping. What are some of the short- and long-term health benefits of installing a Pure Elements Water whole-house system? My greatest passion is addressing chemicals in the bath and shower, as well as throughout the home living environment. Bathing provides the greatest exposure to harmful and carcinogenic gaseous chemicals. While we can’t make health claims, it is proven that many diseases stem from these aerosol chemicals, such as childhood asthma. We eliminate these from the bathing experience, as well as the entire household (gaseous chemicals migrate out of the shower stall and linger in the home for up to six hours). It is equally important to address water quality for drinking, cooking, ice and all consumption purposes. Our systems provide water that is great tasting and chemical-free, but retains healthful minerals. The pH is generally between 7.6 and 8.0, measuring slightly alkaline. Quality water is available from every faucet in the home
“My greatest passion is addressing chemicals in the bath and shower, as well as throughout the home living environment.” without requiring a drinking water system under the sink or bottled water. What makes these systems particularly effective in Southern California? Our attention to detail in custom designing each system for the particular water supply allows us to provide the best quality water. Out of the box or generic systems cannot do this—they tend to focus on one or two issues at the expense of others that remain untreated. We have a vast network of municipalities, ranging from 100-percent local groundwater to 100-percent imported water. This requires knowledge of each area’s water supply and specifically designed systems to be completely effective in Southern California. It takes much more effort on our part, but the end result is the finest water quality and peace of mind for our clients.
Pure Elements
How does Pure Elements Water foster sustainability and help protect the planet? Forty billion plastic bottles are buried in landfills annually, with an average time to degrade of 1,000 years. Salt-based water softeners are highly detrimental to the environment and are outlawed in many communities. Our systems provide environmentally-sound alternatives, without plastic and without salt. Because of our green technologies, eco-aware clients, as well as municipalities, favor our technologies and approach.
What are some of the top water quality issues today and how are you working to combat them at Pure Elements Water? Our focus is on health and preventing pinhole leaks in copper pipes. We provide healthier homes by addressing chemicals in bathing and drinking water. Our systems are designed to prevent pinhole leaks
in copper pipes (at epidemic levels in Southern California) by addressing water chemistry and chloramines added by the municipalities that cause them. In 8 ½ years, we have never had a further pinhole leak caused by chloramines reported after our systems have been installed. This is without our clients re-piping in questionable PEX plastic tubing or introducing epoxy chemicals into their plumbing systems. We address issues that affect health, as well as those that can destroy homes and create extreme inconvenience and cost. Hard water damage follows closely after these two, and we effectively solve that issue as well. How do you stay informed of the latest research and innovations in water quality systems? I follow the latest information regarding water quality issues; as we develop more testing capability to detect chemicals and carcinogens at lower levels, our government moves to set or lower legal limits for them. We react quickly when a health concern arises—much more quickly than our government or the EPA. For example, the EPA just set limits in 2014 for hexavalent chromium, 14 years after Erin Brockovich exposed its toxic and carcinogenic effects. And the legal limits are at 500 times higher than Erin’s recommended level for safety! We have been providing a barrier for this heavy metal for more than 37 years, so very much ahead of the curve. I am in contact with top engineers around the country, able to learn about new technology and developments as they first arise. We also have great relationships with health and wellness experts to stay abreast of the latest health concerns surrounding deadly neurotoxins like fluoride, and corrosive chemicals including chloramines.
Tidelli Outdoor
With roots in warm, colorful Brazil, Tidelli Outdoor Living is now making its mark in Southern California with exquisitely designed and hand-crafted custom outdoor furniture. Here, Tatiana and Giancarlo Mandelli discuss their design inspiration, the benefits of heading a family-run business and the passion for giving back to their native country.
TIDELLI OUTDOOR LIVING 18295 EUCLID STREET, FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA 92708 714.825.0054 | TIDELLI.COM
What originally piqued your interest in design? Is it something you have always been passionate about? What led to the founding of Tidelli? Tatiana has always been passionate about design, especially for the outdoors. Part of our culture at Tidelli is to always try to improve what is around, transforming places and products in the best possible way to impact all people around. When Tatiana was 23 years old, at that time an owner of an interior furniture store, Brazil was a closed market and did not allow the import of any furniture. So, the market simply didn’t have access to good outdoor furniture, as there was not a local manufacturer. Tatiana identified this market opportunity, researched the industry and decided to start her own outdoor furniture brand, Tidelli, combining her passion for design with the joy of being outdoors. Tidelli is a family-owned company. How does its management by four siblings set it apart from other businesses? Our family always had entrepreneurship in our blood, inspired by our father, who created multiple businesses. After founding Tidelli in 1989, Tatiana ran the business on her own for a couple years, but after it grew, the company needed quality professionals and guidance to bring Tidelli to new heights. Tatiana invited her brother, Luciano, and later her sister, Roberta, to be part of Tidelli. Their business background added new skills to the company. More recently, the youngest sibling of the family, Giancarlo, joined the company to lead Tidelli international operations, moving to Orange County to run the expansion from the United States.

Tidelli’s success comes from placing one another in a clear position, where everyone can perform their best by leveraging their previous professional experiences. Tied to the family bond, we respect/honor each other’s expertise and, together, coordinate our main goal: to bring our exclusive furniture to high-end clients. How do Tidelli products reflect local Brazilian culture? Tidelli’s products not only are hand-made in Brazil, but they are also heavily influenced by Brazilian culture and style. Brazil is a warm and great country with creative people from around the world. It is full of colors, with an amazing nature to be inspired by. From the name of our collections, to their colors and shapes, you can clearly see that we proudly carry our nation’s personality. Talk about Tidelli’s commitment to applying sociallysustainable practices and job opportunities for local residents in Brazil. As a business, it’s our duty to provide jobs and growth opportunities for local residents. Brazil has a lot of riches, and our people are one of them; they are great craftsmen. We fully believe that together we are stronger. Through a partnership with the local government, we moved our manufacturing factory from the South of Brazil to the Northeast, in an underdeveloped community, offering jobs to hundreds of people who had never had a chance before. After a couple years, we saw the community prospering and knew our presence had helped tremendously the local people, who were mostly unemployed, marginalized individuals. For the first time, many of them were given the opportunity to live a dignified life. With jobs, education and inclusion efforts, we changed their perspective. Today, Tidelli employs over 300 people who live within 1 kilometer from the factory. Certainly, we are a Brazilian company with international reach thanks to them.
Tidelli Outdoor
What led you to choose Costa Mesa as the location for Tidelli’s first U.S. flagship store? The year-round sunny weather and the outdoor lifestyle that Southern California promotes drew us here. Besides, Orange County and Los Angeles are two markets that set trends, being perfect to introduce the Tidelli brand. What makes the furniture and products found at Tidelli truly unique? Our furniture has its own unique, Brazilian, colorful, fun, hand-made appeal, not seen in the American market too often. Also, the utilization of nautical rope as the main material allows clients to customize the products to the specific need of their project. We believe what truly makes our products unique is our obsessive attention to details and full commitment in delivering the best outdoor-proof product. Our constant research for new materials, our partnership with the best designers, and the investment we make in our factory, engineering and personnel is what allows us to have been able to receive awards and be embraced by the American market. What design trends do you see taking shape this next season? The season ahead calls for cozy seating with light watercolor tones, rope texture and clean details.

Sonja & Chris Mulhall Behold the wondrous world of contemporary, luxe home furniture and accents as soon as you step through the doors of Visions in Contemporary Living. A creative visionary in his own right, owner Chris Mulhall’s passion for all things home-related started at a young age, while working at his family’s furniture business. Years later, having honed his talent, Mulhall has created this distinct, undeniably modern mecca of furniture. Here, the master of contemporary living shares his insights on home design, furniture quality and creating a space of one’s own.

What inspired your passion for furniture? My passion for furniture began over 45 years ago, when I started working in my family’s furniture business. I enjoy the interaction with people and helping them create the contemporary environment that they want to live and/or work in.
Visions
What about modern design appeals to you most? The clean lines, the small scale, and the use of colors that can be used in different furniture design, sculptures and wall art.
What makes Visions in Contemporary Living a singular concept? My motto is color, style and energy. What I mean by that is some stores do a little bit here and there with color and energy; for us, we excel in it. Many people that come in our store are in awe with the design and the look. I can honestly say that there is no one in Orange County that does what we do in totality. I’ve had some customers share with me that the wall art and accessories I carry, along with the unique furnishings, reminds them of an art gallery.
How do you embrace both functionality and style with the pieces you choose? Some high-end contemporary styling represents a beautiful design, though it is not functional or comfortable. I’m real big on comfort and functionality. I believe that the furniture you choose for your home or office should have both! Will you expand on your process of creating custom furniture for clients? Every customer’s needs are different when it comes to creating
“My passion for furniture began over 45 years ago, when I started working in my family’s furniture business.” a colorful environment for their home. Each company that we use has a large selection of leathers, a variety of fabrics and custom colors to choose from, so it makes our job easy and fun to support the needs of our customer.
Why do you feel that it’s important to add custom pieces to your home? Every customer’s need is different; adding custom pieces to a home gives it a personal touch that everyone can enjoy. What do you look for when adding pieces to your collection? I have found some of the best U.S. manufacturers of unique designs in metal and glass that give our store a different look. I look for a unique design that has the “wow” factor, that stands out and that complements the colors and designs that I already carry. I carry a lot of options for leather selections, along with multiple selections of upholstery to include many varieties of color. I will always continue to add to our bar stools, dining and coffee table collections, which consists of stainless steel and glass. The store is forever evolving; we get new, unique items all the time. What characteristics define modern design? Sleek designs, small scale, color, use of glass, stainless steel, chrome, infinity lighting, etc.
What furnishings are essential when transforming a house into a home? Comfort furnishings and sleek design. One of the things that sets my store apart from other stores is the unique items that we carry. I specifically look for things that have the “wow” factor to give my store the look and effect that it has.

How did you come to Visions in Contemporary Living? In 2007, after working with my brother for 10 years at Images in San Diego, I had the desire to open up my own furniture store. Orange County had the right demographic for moving forward. I wanted an area that would appreciate the contemporary nature of my store. I only carry high quality, 100-percent leather products on my floor. We are gallery dealers for IMG Comfort (Recliners/Theatre Seating from Norway), Elite Modern, Star International and Kelvin Giormani. Because we are gallery dealers, their products are well represented. I also carry unique wall art, lighting, accessories, sculptures and glass products.

What is the customer benefit of knowing which type of mattress is the best fit for them? The philosophy of the store is to compare the best technologies and see what best suits the customer’s needs. By educating them on the correct support and comfort options available to them, they are able to make more informed decisions and feel confident in their purchase.
CA Lux Mattress You also sleep on the mattresses you sell. Why do you feel it’s important to give customers a firsthand account of mattress sleep styles? Customers rely on my knowledge of the products when making their decision. Sleeping on the mattresses myself furthers my knowledge of the
products I sell. We only carry the best products in our showroom, and sleeping on the mattresses myself allows me the opportunity to weed out any brands than may not live up to the standards that we expect from our vendors. Do you have a favorite mattress brand or type? If so, why? My favorite type of mattress is a natural mattress. The largest organ of your body is your skin. You spend a third of your life in bed and an all-natural mattress will not expose you to the chemicals and off gassing that most traditional mattresses contain. You also work alongside your father and your brother. What makes a truly family-owned business different from other companies? My father, Ron Lane Sr., retired this year. My mother, Patti McLain, works in the office. My brother, Brad Lane, runs the warehouse and ordering. Not a day goes by that someone in the family is not working in the store. We are a hands-on company that treats our customers like family. Being a small, family-owned business, we understand the importance of customer satisfaction and strive to achieve it 100-percent of the time.

In 2015, California Luxury Mattress was born with the intent of finding the best luxury mattresses from around the world and making them available to the Southern California market.

estled in the heart of South America, tucked between Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay is a country rich in beauty, culture and gastronomy. A bit off the beaten path, it remains shrouded in mystery for most tourists outside of Latin America. But, with the recent launch of his state-of-the-art winery Bodega Garzón, Argentine billionaire Alejandro P. Bulgheroni is putting Uruguay on the map, creating even more reasons to visit this secluded land of onetime obscurity. The first time Bulgheroni ventured into Uruguay’s Garzón region, he “felt the magic of the land.” He then purchased 10,000 acres and hasn’t looked back since. Just over 100 miles outside of Uruguay’s capitol city of Montevideo, Garzón consists of a verdant, rolling landscape with terroir similar to that of Tuscany. Convinced that the soil had ideal conditions to grow grapes, Bulgheroni tapped Italian winemaker Alberto Antonini to come on board, bringing his vision for Bodega Garzón to life. Some 10 years—and one-hundred million—later, and the stunning winery, now open to the public, may single-handedly boost year-round tourism for the entire country.
The first winery in the world seeking LEED certification for its entire facility, Bodega Garzón is a leader in both sustainability and design. Hidden among acres of lush, green vineyards, the exterior is grand, with clean lines, glass and stone giving it a contemporary look, and landscaping that is oriented to enhance biodiversity. The thoughtful architecture incorporated preexisting rock formations into the modern design, which adds interesting juxtapositions throughout the winery. Emanating five-star luxury, Bodega Garzón’s brand of warm Latin hospitality is without pretension. The winery welcomes visitors for tours, private meals, events, and, most importantly, the opportunity to taste elegantly constructed wines at very reasonable price points.
Beyond Uruguay
Until Bulgheroni decides to open a hotel on the property, the ideal way to visit the Garzón region is to make the chic beach town of José Ignacio your home base. The former fishing village, less than an hour from Bodega Garzón, evolved into a hideaway for celebs after nearby hot spot Punta del Este (the St. Tropez of the South as it’s often called) became overcrowded. Drawing Latin America’s jet-set crowd to the coast for years, José Ignacio is reminiscent of the Hamptons. December through March (summer in Uruguay), the town is chock-full of socialites rubbing elbows while eating grilled fish and asado with their toes in the sand. The centrally located Posada del Faro is a swanky inn in José Ignacio, complete with complimentary bicycles and a self-service honor bar at the pool. A tad more secluded, Casa Suaya is a luxury boutique hotel with stone wall suites and thatched roof bungalows. Facing the grassy sand dunes of Brava Beach, and just outside the center of town, Casa Suaya is ideal for quiet morning strolls along the beach as you head into town for cafe con leche.

BEYOND
Also a burgeoning culinary destination, José Ignacio’s most popular restaurant, Parador La Huella, is ranked near the top of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Led by chef Alejandro Morales and inspired by culinary techniques from Spain (shellfish), San Francisco (bread) and Latin America (flame-grill), this upscale beach shack is super chic and laid-back at the same time, with simply grilled seafood taking center stage as diners linger late into the night. Another José Ignacio favorite, Marismo is a magical, candlelit spot tucked into the woods, just off the main road. The sandy ground reminds patrons of the beaches nearby as they settle into rustic tables surrounding a fire pit. Here, at his remote, romantic flagship resto, local surfer chef Federico Desseno serves perfectly grilled dishes. Just 30 minutes inland from José Ignacio is the town of Garzón. Sleepy, with dirt and gravel roads, it is most commonly known for Hotel and Restaurant Garzón, helmed by acclaimed Argentine chef Francis Mallmann. Mallmann’s establishment is the town’s main attraction, bordering one edge of the modest plaza that anchors it. Pulling up for dinner, guests might be greeted by a bonfire out front, with the evening meal grilling over an open flame spit. Glasses of Tannat, Uruguay’s most famous red wine, pair perfectly with piping hot empanadas, one of Mallmann’s specialties. Once seated, diners are privy to a once-in-a-lifetime
Beyond Uruguay

If a trip to pueblo Garzón isn’t in the cards, Mallmann’s cuisine can also be experienced back at Bodega Garzón, where he designed the open-flame focused kitchen and trained the culinary team running the stylish restaurant on his friend Bulgheroni’s property. Leisurely afternoons at the winery can easily be spent indulging over long lunches, while evenings are perfect for sipping signature wines (Tannat and Albariño) on the verandah while waiting for dinner.
The Garzón region is the kind of place where one revels in the luxury of experiencing the best food, wine and hospitality Uruguay has to offer. Now, thanks to Bodega Garzón, it can all be enjoyed year-round.

CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECT MARK SINGER PASSED AWAY IN 2015, BUT NOT BEFORE THE VISIONARY DESIGNER LEFT A DEFINITIVE MARK ON RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S COASTAL LOCALES. His modern, light-filled homes have won numerous American Institute of Architects awards, and among his legacy is this stunning 3,750-squarefoot residence occupying a prime parcel at 990 Oceanfront, where the sand meets the sea, in Singer’s hometown of Laguna Beach. Conceived and built by the Laguna Beach-based real estate construction and brokerage firm Tresor Properties in 2013, the home showcases sustainable features ahead of its time, making it the first residence along the California coastline to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification status. The property also capitalizes on its prime beachfront site at Anita Street and Oceanfront, in the seaside community’s eclectic enclave of Laguna Village, thanks to a design that captures breathtaking views of the crashing waves from almost every vantage point, while also offering an ideal spot for living and entertaining. Nearby is a number of restaurants, shops, art galleries and acclaimed resorts. Upon being commissioned by Tresor to design the home, which is listed for $16.88 million by Joele Watson of Surterre Properties, Singer said the site offered an unusual design opportunity with the confluence of oceanfront, sea and sky. He succeeded in capturing an atmosphere of warm, modern design paired with Pacific views and the coastal life that truly exists in Laguna Beach. Singer’s simple and clean aesthetic is evident throughout the threebedroom, four-bath abode via a framework of limestone, concrete and floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and distinct features such as glass bi-fold doors and seaward balconies. Environmental sustainability was of utmost importance in the construction process as well, with Tresor employing the latest in smart-house technology and green building features. Situated on a steep lot, the tri-level house descends in sections to the ocean—starting with the garage, then the courtyard and bedroom suites, down to the main living quarters and finally the beach. Singer’s dramatic design prowess celebrates the area’s awe-inspiring panorama the minute you descend the stairs from the street-side three-car garage. Walking through a gated door and down a few more steps, a private, 2,200-squarefoot courtyard emerges, featuring a saltwater pool and spa and a stairway straight to the sand. Water flows into the pool from beneath each step of a Portuguese limestone-lined “walk-on-water” feature that leads to a frosted glass-paneled entry door opening into a sky-lit gallery with floorto-ceiling glass walls. Found to the east are two sumptuous guest bedrooms (each with its own bath and private access to the beach stairways flanking the home), along with an elevator sporting a three-way opening and ocean
views. The master suite is located around the corner to the west, while a lighted limestone, maple and stainless-steel staircase traverses past an exposed concrete wall to the home’s large-scale living area below, complete with an expansive waterfront deck flaunting spectacular, unobstructed ocean, Catalina and coastline views. On the open main floor, the family room continues the exposed concrete wall motif and is separated from the dining room by an artist-designed, twoway fireplace. Both areas open to the rear grounds to allow for views of the home’s impressive outdoor areas showcasing multiple patios, a sand-floored terrace with a 10-person fire pit and private access to the beach via a coded gate. The chef ’s kitchen adjacent to the dining room, meanwhile, exudes modern flair with streamlined appliances and fixtures. The home features approximately 3,600 square feet of living space highlighted by supreme finishes throughout. Included are 11-foot ceilings with custom half-inch reveals; professional Lightopia lighting; custom limestone flooring; automated shades; flush-mount wall systems by TRUFIG; polished chrome door and window hardware by Olivari; and Crestron complete home automation. Among the show-stopping highlights is the home’s gourmet kitchen, which is outfitted with a massive island with a Silestone countertop and waterfall edges; Duravit fixtures by Philippe Starck; Gaggenau appliances (including an electronic stovetop, double ovens and custom-built refrigerator); and a pantry with a temperature-controlled wine cellar. Meanwhile, the master suite opens to a private oceanfront terrace via bifolding doors and to the courtyard with a set of sliders. A study in luxury, the bedroom features an extraordinary spa bathroom with a Seura TV hidden within the mirror (with another in the bedroom); freestanding Jacuzzi tub (with chromo therapy and side and bottom jets); two-way fireplace; and large shower sporting steam, body spray, rain and hand nozzles and clearto-opaque windows and walls looking out onto the ocean. While one of only a handful of newer houses that sits right on the sand in Laguna Beach, its most outstanding feature is its LEED Platinum certification—the highest level obtainable from the US Green Building Council. Among the many environmentally-friendly features are solar panels that provide almost all of the home’s energy needs; low-VOC paint, adhesives and caulking; countertops crafted by Eco by Cosentino using recycled glass; lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council; locallysourced stone for the fireplace and exterior; Poggenpohl kitchen cabinets made from sustainable wood; energy star-rated appliances; and STR Infissi windows and bi-fold doors with ClimaGuard glass to conserve energy and ensure better indoor air quality. In addition, a 1,250-gallon cistern (with bacteria and debris filters) was installed to capture rainwater for use in landscape irrigation. The home also features revolutionary water-conservation elements, including landscaping consisting largely of drought-tolerant native California plants; underground drip irrigation; and low-impact faucets and toilets. To be sure, while this luxurious and sustainable home indeed exists at the beach, it’s far from your typical beach house.

Envision driving down a winding road off Pacific Coast Highway, opening up a gate at the end of the lane and arriving at your very own seaside castle crowning a rocky peninsula—complete with crashing waves and breathtaking panoramic coastline views. There’s even a circular parking turnstile in the stone-paved motor court that will rotate your car for easy access when ready to leave...if you ever want to leave, that is.
Chances are, once you arrive at this heavenly three-level Mediterranean-style home situated in South Laguna Beach, you’ll be quite content to just while away the days there. After all, this private Pacific retreat grants easy entry to two glorious hidden sandy beaches: Table Rock to the north and Totuava (below the Laguna Lido condos) to the south, both connected underneath the home via an underground rock arch at low tide. Within walking distance is a wealth of handy amenities and services, including delectable dining at restaurants such as Ti Amo, Coyote Grill and Eva’s Caribbean Kitchen; shopping at distinct consignment and boutique stores; and even a welcoming neighborhood garden park, with workshops, group workdays and parties.
Perhaps the best part about the home, however, is the abundant

patios and balconies from which to spend days secretly spotting dolphins and whales and evenings amid those spectacular California sunsets. “What I love most about this home is the total privacy, the way you feel like you’re on an island and you can look up-coast and down-coast,” says Chris Valli of Surterre Properties, who is listing the property for $35 million. “The views are just unbelievable; it’s pretty amazing.” Situated at 31271 Seacliff Drive, the 4,800-square-foot dwelling retains its Old Laguna charm, but has been newly updated with all of the amenities desirable should its owner just wish to stay put. Not lacking (in the least) when it comes to the ultimate in rest and relaxation, the home sports everything from a handsome billiard room to an outdoor bar and steam room, and even a retractable, automated staircase to the cliffs below for those who wield a rod and reel. (clockwise from top left) Table Rock Beach is situated just north of the home. The main level’s open floor plan flows seamlessly from the great room to the dining room, with both spaces presenting spectacular vistas of the Pacific via floor-to-ceiling glass walls. rom the driveway, a welcoming wrought-iron entry gate lures one into a rock-lined courtyard with a grassy ocean-view patio off to one side, which then leads to an attractive iron and wood front door. Open to find the home’s main floor; its foyer featuring modern designer lighting overhead, numerous skylights (including one etched with a lighthouse and dolphins) and views straight to the water, thanks to remote-controlled shades that open to reveal floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Descend a few short steps to a billiard room replete with flat-screen TV and fireplace on the immediate left. Then, a clockwise flow introduces the great room; walk-in bar; dining room with mirrored coffered ceiling; and professional chef ’s kitchen sporting Wolf appliances, a wooden Sub-Zero refrigerator, wine cooler and more. Rounding out this level is a powder room dressed with a decorative glass sink, a laundry room and access to a two-car garage equipped with yet another of those nifty motorized parking turnstiles.
Upstairs is a true thrill to behold, with the spacious master suite boasting a sitting area, fireplace, flat-screen TV, custom oak cabinetry, glass walls and ocean-view balcony. Meanwhile, an allmarble master bath, which also enjoys ocean views, is equipped with dual sinks, a freestanding shower, soothing soaking tub, makeup area, dual walk-in closets and even a separate shoe closet. An adjacent brick-tiled bedroom is equipped with custom shutters and coastal sights via a private patio.

Once on the lower level, a large family/bonus room allows access to a massive balcony featuring a wrought-iron railing bedecked with sea creatures. Here, one is privy to a fullservice custom granite and slate bar—an ideal setting for intimate gatherings and extravagant soirées alike—along with a retractable automated staircase that lowers to the bluff below. Back inside, two additional bedrooms on this level include ensuite baths, with one also offering a grassy, ocean-view balcony. But that’s not all—far from it, in fact. In addition to all of the home’s numerous thoughtfully crafted details—mirrored walls and ceilings, wood and stone flooring, and custom-built cabinetry included—it also earns its stripes as a technological masterpiece. The residence is outfitted with a DSC security system; electronic awnings; those aforementioned motorized turnstiles; and a whole-home IntelliControl system that provides satellite radio, cable and iPad compatibility. No doubt about it...this home is most definitely one-of-akind, with the best of the coast just a jaw-dropping view—or convenient jaunt—away.
(clockwise from top left) A circular parking turnstile in the home’s stone-paved motor court can be rotated for an easy exit. The dining room is highlighted by breathtaking views, a mirrored coffered ceiling stone accent wall. The inviting billiard room is among the first of many amenities one sees upon entering the house.

Surterre’s 10th Anniversary Celebrating a decade of distinction as OC’s leading luxury real estate brokerage WRITTEN BY BETH FHANER
S
ince its inception in 2006, Surterre Properties has been at the forefront of Orange County’s luxury real estate market, servicing clients located in the California Riviera and beyond. Co-founded by Gary Legrand and Paula Ansara-Wilhelm, Surterre has brought a new standard of service to the residential real estate market, in addition to a culture and family environment that places a high value on community involvement. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the preeminent luxury real estate firm—a milestone that caps a decade of extraordinary success, resulting in $2.6 billion in sales last year, and the ranking of #1 Brokerage in Orange County.
A well-known brand in Southern California, Surterre has always been a step beyond its competitors. The company has launched innovative business practices that are unique to the real estate industry; including the fullservice, in-house advertising agency The Studio, as well as global connectivity via the exclusive International Internet Marketing program, which reaches clients in over 40 countries across six continents. Surterre (in French, “Sur-terre” means “on earth”) is also recognized for being an eco-friendly business with a deep commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the Southern California region. A US Green Building Council member and Certified EcoBroker designation, Surterre partners 116

with like-minded organizations to further their mission to “think and act green,” holding monthly eWaste drives near all of its offices. Other attributes that help set Surterre apart in the residential real estate market include marketing and property exposure efforts through digital advertising, video and photography, online affiliates, mobile and email marketing, print advertising, as well as agents and brokers who are fluent in 15 languages. Over the past decade, Surterre has won numerous accolades, including earning a spot on the Orange County Register’s Top Workplaces on more than one occasion. Additionally, The Studio has garnered over 100 awards for its creative marketing concepts, including The Communicator Awards, Hermes Creative Awards, American Graphic Design Awards and the Telly Awards. Another one of the organization’s top priorities is supporting the local community, and with a workforce of almost 500, Surterre agents and employees all place a great importance on giving back. The company has long been involved with several charitable programs and offers a “matching” donations program with their agents, providing financial support to special causes. Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity and Miracles for Kids are some of the organizations that Surterre partners with in the local community, while also supporting

the American Red Cross by holding semiannual blood drive events at the company’s Newport Beach headquarters. “We give back in every way possible to the communities we serve; it’s a privilege and a joy,” says Ansara-Wilhelm. To commemorate a decade of outstanding achievement, Surterre Properties is holding its Annual Open House event September 24-25, inviting attendees to view hundreds of homes throughout OC during the celebratory weekend. The anniversary festivities also include a raffle at the Pelican Hill Resort and a special gift. Additionally, Surterre will further mark its anniversary with another engaging community endeavor, as the company aligns with seven OC coffee shops located near their various offices, where a Surterre employee will be on hand to offer free cups of java to customers. A decade of unparalleled success is a remarkable achievement for any organization. For Surterre Properties, however, its 10th anniversary offers the opportunity to reflect: on the firm’s dynamic work with their worldwide clientele and as a company that focuses on giving back to the Orange County community they call home. The major milestone also presents an occasion to envision the future. “We are proud that our agents have been with us from the beginning,” offers Ansara-Wilhelm, “and we plan to be here for them and our clients for decades to come.”

Star Powered Amid the crystalline blue seas and soft, sandy shores of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, 650plus philanthropically-minded participants gathered at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort for the 20th annual Stars & Stripes Tournament. The four-day festival saw those in attendance fish, golf and celebrate among the backdrop of some of Cabo’s most stunning scenery, all while reeling in an impressive $3 million for children’s charities in Orange County and Mexico. Each day, just as the sun began to rise above the horizon, eager anglers cast out of the waters off the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, while golfers putted their way through the impressive 18-hole Chileno Bay Golf Course, designed by Tom Fazio. Rounding out the elegant extravaganza was the muchanticipated Saturday night dinner, during which awards were presented and a host of best-loved bands rocked the night away. A truly spectacular way to reach for the stars.

TABLE The Ecology Center drew the attention of Alice Waters, the founder of Chez Panisse, the “farmto-table” movement and the Edible School Project. What does that mean for The Ecology Center? We are so honored to share in this mentorship with Alice Waters. Through her generosity, we are able to align with the best practices she and her team have been using for the last 25 years, and work with an amazing curriculum of teachers from around the country, including those from half a dozen schools here in Southern California. Her project support helps us become more of an on-the-ground organizer for teachers and families involved in the local school education of how to create gardens and grow food. What is your perspective on corporations who support GMOs (genetically modified organisms)? Food should be owned by the people, not by corporations. We need to take ownership of our food supply and our culture. Food and culture go hand in hand.
Neighborhood Farmer The Ecology Center founder joins forces with food visionary, Alice Waters WRITTEN BY SUSAN IRBY
P
PHOTOS COURTESY OF ANNE WATSON
Here, Marks shares his vision for a global reconnection to the land that begins “one step at a time,” and his recent alliance with “the mother of the farm-to-table movement,” pioneering chef Alice Waters. Who inspired you? Was there a farmer in the family? My grandfather grew fruit trees and encouraged staying connected to the land. I have always wanted to work outside and have been amazed by the power and joy of growing food. Your work in developing ecological systems took you to communities around the world. Was it difficult to initiate those systems here, in the U.S.? There is so much opportunity here and The Ecology Center has been very welcomed. We are in our eighth year and have developed gardening programs for children such as GROW YOUR OWN, which is a school garden program; we have workshops on how to harvest rain water, and our largest fundraising project, GREEN FEAST, integrates local chefs and farmers [and] has been a part of our growth since the beginning. baskmagazine.com
What three things do you advise for starting a garden at home? Find a place to grow a garden that is nearest to your kitchen to make it as convenient as possible. Garden what you like to eat, and I recommend that entry-level gardeners start with herbs and a lemon tree. If you don’t have a yard, plant the herbs in containers.
Tabel - Evan Marks
rior to founding The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano, Long Beach-born, OC-raised Evan Marks studied Agro-Ecology in Santa Cruz. “I have always had a connection to the land,” he says. “How food can help connect us to each other is the essence of nature.” His work as a consultant helping to design model sustainable farms took Marks to indigenous communities in Latin America, such as Costa Rica, and, later, to West Africa. But it was before taking a large job in Nigeria that Marks saw a need for change in sustainable farming and education right here in the United States, which led him to establish The Ecology Center.
124
Do you have concerns surrounding food packaging and labeling? I feel farmers are not the issue when it comes to organic foods and how they are labeled. Labeling, in general, is a good thing. The more educated the consumer is helps in the decision-making process.
photos (top to bottom) Supporters and guests enjoying dinner by local chefs at GREEN FEAST fundraiser; Marks and Alice Waters share a celebratory embrace.
What is your greatest vision for your work at The Ecology Center? That we have clean oceans, healthy children, [and] nutritious school lunches… It’s like painting a picture with a deeper vision of our connection to nature, as opposed to our disconnect. What is your next big project? Our GREEN FEAST fundraisers with local chefs are a real demonstration of what sustainable food looks like. Our most recent event was September 10, with chefs from San Diego, OC and LA, including chefs Pascal Olhats, Jason McLeod, Joe Magnanelli, Ryan Adams, Cathy McKnight and Rich Mead. About 24 chefs created an incredible meal for over 200 guests. THE ECOLOGY CENTER 32701 Alipaz Street San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675 949.443.4223, TheEcologyCenter.org

THE LOVE OF ITALY’S REGIONAL CUISINE is the essence of what owner and Chef Mark McDonald brings to his rustica-style restaurant, Old Vine Café, located in the heart of The Camp in Costa Mesa. After having studied at the Italian Culinary Institute in Calabria, Italy, chef McDonald defines his style as “creating a uniquely flavorful immersion into the Italian experience by letting high-quality ingredients shine without overcomplicating the dish.” For brunch, don’t miss the decadent Blueberry French Toast made with rich brioche, and among the lunch and dinner selections, the savory Hand Made Gnocchi with Brown Butter, Black Pepper Pancetta, Taleggio, and Chervil, All-Natural Australian Char Grilled Lamb Chops with Dried Blueberry Demi Glace and Crispy Fried Yuca, and Seared Baby Octopus in Sourdough Sand, Celery Citrus, and Parsley Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil. As for dessert, because “My mom was a great baker and cook,” shares chef McDonald, “Grandma’s Cheesecake is a rich cream cheesecake with a thin graham cracker butter crust.” And, it’s amazing. Seasonal specialties include the highly praised Chef ’s Tasting Menus, featuring pairings that McDonald says “become more than a plate of food or glass of wine, they become an experience. It’s a gastronomic edification of food and wine.”

National Treasure With the National Park Service celebrating its centennial year, reflections on Yosemite’s most storied sentry WRITTEN BY JENN THORNTON
Looking Back
O
ne can only imagine the reaction that famed photographer Ansel Adams had upon first seeing the iconic Half-Dome, a colossal shock of granite lording over lush Yosemite Valley. It’s hard enough to square something so astonishing in the mind’s eye, let alone capture it through a lens that lives on as an American memory itself. Appearing as if sliced in half, its face smooth and distinct, HalfDome is the rock-star of its realm, one of innumerable wonders in public parklands nationwide, from national parks and urban parks to heritage sites, recreation areas and American monuments. And yet, the country’s wide swath of natural and cultural resources has but one steward: the National Park Service. Established in 1916, the agency now oversees a vast National Park System comprised of 410 sites and 84 million acres. Whether packed in a camper exploring the Grand Canyon,

standing at the base of the massive Grand Tetons, or spotting wildlife in Yellowstone, the nation’s NPS-protected places—arteries of American life—are egalitarian in its most essential sense, binding Americans through their divisions. Democratic and diverse, these markers of the “We, the People” narrative offer a humbler, more aweinspiring form of American exceptionalism. One doesn’t dare estimate the role Half-Dome plays in this evolving story. A temple in the sky, the geological wonder stirs the soul. Cresting nearly 4,800 feet high, it’s one of the most formidable and marveled at rock formations in the world; her ridge a stupor of amazement, and the pitch to reach her apex near religion for climbers. The bottlenecked route up Half-Dome’s rounded backside is so steep it requires cables—and nerves—of steel to scale it. At the top, however, with majestic bookends like El Capitan (itself a pillar of grandeur) looming in the distance, the reward is pure reverence. America, the beautiful.

Research has defined our legacy, and at Loma Linda University Health we continue to explore and find answers that will help us provide ways to alleviate suffering from diseases as well as guide people to live longer and more fulfilling lives. From discovering the link between nutrition and longevity to devising a simple nasal spray that could potentially prevent a stroke, we seek to not only unearth the answers but more importantly, ask the right questions. Advancing human knowledge to find answers that have the potential to save and improve lives is why we LIVE to Advance.
