bask publisher’s note | by jolie adams

Summer is upon us and it’s finally time to fire up the old barbeque, head to the beach (with layers of sunscreen, of course) and take a much-needed family vacation. bask’s second Summer issue is our first Men’s Issue and we are so excited to share Ethan Wayne’s story with you. It was only fitting that we captured the story of John Wayne’s son in this issue since our summer fashion shoot was shot at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort, where John Wayne’s namesake bar and lounge, Duke’s Place, can be found. Getting to know Ethan Wayne in tandem with his father’s connection to the Balboa Bay Club really made this issue come full circle. Sometimes life connects the dots in serendipitous ways, and this issue encapsulates just such a happy coincidence.

R

ejoice…Refresh… Remount.™

The bask team and I had a great time shooting our summer fashion pages. Thank you to all of our friends at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort along with Blue Star Yacht Charter for allowing us to cruise around the harbor so we could capture the stunning bayside shots. And, a special thanks to Stefan Gillmer of Blue Star Yacht Charter for being our captain—and our “cabana boy” for the day. Inside this issue, you’ll find a veritable roadmap for where to shop, eat, and vacation this season. If you’re looking for a great new restaurant to try, Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop on 17th St. in Costa Mesa just opened, complete with a marketplace, wine bar, and onsite chef’s garden. While on 17th St., you might as well stop by the Fleur de Lys boutique for all things eclectic and unique. After shopping and dining, indulge yourself and stop by SAS Shampoo and Style for a blow out to prep for a night on the town.

Another summer essential for shopping is SOCO—if you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out yet, you must this summer. New and unique places are always popping up, and you could easily while away a whole summer day perusing the shops and sampling the farmers market and fresh restaurants. Finally, we are very proud of this issue and quite lucky to have new writers Stuart W. Volkow and Larry Weinsten, who brought new flare to our Tech section. bask’s Summer issue offers a little something for everyone, so please read on, enjoy, and here’s to all the long summer days to come!

Summer Sojourns: “Being from Chicago, I always go back every summer. The city is full of concerts, festivals (The Ravinia Music Festival is one of the nation’s finest), and some beaches that rival the Orange Coast’s, [though] without the surf. [Also, I’m] planning on making one of my first summer vacations, combined with business, as my first trip to Israel.” Beach Bum: Stuart loves to spend time at the shore enjoying “warmer ocean swimming, sailing, and kayaking!”

2 Kirsten Prosser

Cultural Combination: Raised in Denmark, Kirsten worked as a fashion designer in Spain for over seven years. Upon moving to Newport Beach, she became a leading runway specialist for Donna Karan New York. In early 2009, she realized one of her goals when she opened the onQueStyle boutique to remarket her clients’ highend designer clothing.

3 Jenny Peters

Summer Sojourns: “It isn’t quite the summer, but I go to New Orleans in early May every year for Jazz Fest. It just feels like summer there, as the temperature at the racetrack venue generally hovers around 88 degrees! [Also,] my father was a herpetologist and I grew up camping in our national parks. These days, my family still tries to all get together somewhere every summer for a weekend in the wild, each of us with our own tent and gear. It’s a terrific way to remember my dad.” Dog Days: “The best summer moments for me are warm nights at the Hollywood Bowl, with great music, good friends, and a nice bottle of Napa red. That’s summer bliss.”

4 Tony Lattimore

Summer Sojourns: “I grew up in Illinois and we had a summer home in Michigan. We always enjoyed going to that house. Once we housed 14 people comfortably—it was a great place!” Beach Bum: “Our favorite summer activity is going to the beach. We have nine children, so it’s always a great day to spend time with all of our wonderful children!” Dog Days: “The best part of summer is our annual neighborhood July 4th party! All of the kids in the neighborhood gather and play, all of the adults do the same.”

5 Larry Weinstein

Summer Sojourns: “We held annual family gatherings every summer in Cleveland when my parents were alive. We’ve kept up that tradition and some 20 of us, my sisters, nieces, nephews, and their kids still get together around my sister’s house there for 10 days every summer. It’s always a great time, and surprisingly, Cleveland turns out to be more fun than it sounds.” Dog Days: Larry’s choice summer pastime continues to be “Tennis! Love to spend as much time on the court as I can.”

6 Heidi Ristau

Summer Sojourns: “My brother rents a big, beautiful house in The Hamptons each summer and the entire family spends a week there together. We take turns cooking and then enjoy all our meals outside on the expansive deck, swim in the ocean and pool, play competitive rounds of Smashball (Kadima back East), cornhole, and cribbage, stop at roadside beach shacks for plump lobster rolls and cocktails at Cyril’s, and stroll the towns of Amagansett and East Hampton.” Dog Days: “Summer means getting outside—rollerskating down Newport Peninsula, paddle boarding in San Clemente, hiking Crystal Cove, drinks at The Rooftop Bar in Laguna Beach, and enjoying a concert and carnival rides at the Orange County Fair.”

Dog Days: A phenomenally talented photographer, Tony spends his days in his charming Corona del Mar photography studio just steps from the beach, allowing him to soak in the season while doing what he does best. Artistic Flair: A background in fashion and an artistic lifestyle inform Tony’s stunning photography and have helped him excel in capturing personality in photos.

8 Debbie Lavdas

Summer Sojourns: “Once, when I was about eight, we traveled cross-country to Vail, Colorado with another family in a tricked-out motor home, and that was a riot. I believe someone broke their leg and we didn’t exactly get rich panning for gold. It was the journey, not the destination that made the memories.”Dog Days: A perennial favorite, Debbie loves “backyard barbecues. Having friends and family over and just hanging out flipping burgers and swapping stories.”Beach Bum: “No plans all day, just time to relax and watch the kids hop waves and boogie board.”

9 Robert E. Palmer

Summer Sojourns: “When I was 6 years old, my parents took my brother and [me] all over Mexico for two weeks, traveling by old DC3’s, cars, and busses to see the country and its people. They instilled the travel bug in me. I try to continue that tradition of taking my kids all over the world each year to different countries with different people, cultures, and climates. They, too, now have the travel bug.” Dog Days: Robert especially cherishes, “the Fourth of July with its importance to our Nation’s history, the heritage and family traditions on the beach, and the sun and warmth it finally brings. Summer basks in its own glory from then until the end of September.”

10 Brittany Martinez

Summer Sojourns: “I went to Florence, Italy for the first time last summer, and so far that has been my favorite place to travel. I want to make it an annual tradition to visit a different place in Europe each summer.” Dog Days: “I love shopping for my summer wardrobe. Bright nail polish, sandals, and wavy beach hair is something I wish I could wear all year long. My favorite part of summer is how long the sun stays out and I love not needing a jacket at night. I appreciate the small things that the warm weather brings!”

11 Jenn Thornton

Summer Sojourns: Each year, Jenn does her best to go “surfing the Pacific Coast of Mexico—I go to a lot of different hives. You just can’t beat the vibe. With this journey comes a lot of street tacos, reading by the beach and meditating. It’s all so soul-soothing…I never feel as if I am on vacation there—but actually returning home.” Dog Days: “I love to be outside—usually that means trying to tame the half-acre weed patch that is currently my yard. I also love to play in the water with my stepdaughter, Mackenzie, and read under two shady pines that have taken root in the front yard.”

12 Mark Van Mourick

Financial Finesse: As the CEO and founder of Optivest, Inc., Mark manages the portfolios of some of the most preeminent families in the nation. He also wrote Cash Out, Cash In – The After Success Investment Guide, a guide for managing the responsibilities of wealth accumulation. Philanthropic Propensity: Mark founded and serves as president of The Optivest Foundation, which donates hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly to Christian Ministries, and also donates 10% of gross annual revenue from Optivest, Inc. and Optivest Properties to various charities worldwide.

Herb Ritts transformed fashion photography in the 1980s, turning celebrities into icons and nudes into modern works of art. The Getty features an exhibition of his works this summer entitled Herb Ritts: L. A. Style, featuring his intimate portraits, neoclassical yet modern nudes, and a creative approach to fashion photography. Prior to his untimely death in 2002, he was uniquely able to span the gap between art and the commercial with stunning, iconic black and white images.

NORAH JONES August 10 The lovely and talented Norah Jones returns for the first time since 2004 to the Hollywood Bowl. Pop, rock, country, or jazz, she’s managed to master each genre. This multi-Grammy winner has performed with a wide array of talent, from the funky Herbie Hancock to the perpetually stoned Willie Nelson to inventive Outkast. Jones has to date won nine Grammys, sold over 40 million albums, and was named Billboard’s top jazz artist of 2009. In a word: enjoy.

YANNI July 18 Spend “An Evening with Yanni” at Segerstrom Hall to see one of music’s “international citizens” work the magic that has helped him sell over 35 million albums. Yanni has sold out concerts all over the world for decades, including iconic performances at the Acropolis in Greece, the Taj Mahal in India, and the Forbidden City in China. Indeed, so enamored were the Chinese with Yanni that they invited him to adopt a Panda—a pretty astounding testament to his talent, considering this is an honor usually reserved for nations. Don’t miss out on seeing this worldwide sensation live.

HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS WITH JOE COCKER August 15 He likely won’t come in through the bathroom window, but his entrance on stage should be quite memorable as Joe Cocker co-headlines with Huey Lewis and The News in a doubleheader of soulful hits at the Greek Theatre. After 40 years, 21 studio and 4 live albums, and awards including a Grammy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award, Joe is still going strong—including being awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2007. Huey brings over 30 years of musical genius to the stage with his band, including hits like The Power of Love from the film Back to the Future—a Billboard #1 hit that also received an Academy Award nomination. Together, the two are sure to create a great night of music under the stars.

4 POSTERS OF PARIS: TOULOUSE-LAUTREC AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES BY MARY WEAVER CHAPIN The undisputed beauty of Parisian art is nothing new, but the graphic genre encapsulated in the poster craze of the Belle Époque is a less-popularized sect with a charm all its own. Curated by Chapin, you’ll find here over a hundred stunning reproductions of posters by Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Bonnard, and more, advertising everything from cabarets to bicycles in distinctive, mesmerizing styles.

5

Sherpas have long been the unsung experts of mountaineering, frequently possessing skill surpassing even the most publicized athletes to conquer peaks such as Everest and K2. Padoan and Zuckerman tell the story of two sherpas who survived the most treacherous K2 climb in history with previously unimaginable interviews and information on the plight and passion of these sherpas, showcasing their idiosyncratic lifestyles and choice of profession.

6 HERE AND THERE: COLLECTED TRAVEL WRITING BY A. A. GILL Painting pretty pictures of tropical beaches and endless palms is all well and good, but Gill’s travel writing offers something which proves to be far more entrancing and beguiling than the standard fare of extolling exotic destinations. Both bitingly funny and understatedly observant, this collection of essays is unfailingly honest and offers an uncompromising and eminently enjoyable window into all corners of the world.

DINNER: A LOVE STORY: IT ALL BEGINS AT THE FAMILY TABLE BY JENNY ROSENSTRACH The concept of family dinners in today’s fast-paced society seems like a charming, Leave it to Beaver kind of idea that’s fallen by the wayside along with vacuuming in heels and Frigidaires. Rosenstrach, however, shows how to make this faraway dream a reality with toothsome recipes and relatable tales of her own trials and triumphs in making the dinner table a place of family. This tome offers inspiration for even the least June Cleaver-esque among us.

The Festival of Arts: an 80-Year Celebration

The year was 1932: a gallon of gas cost 10 cents, an average apartment cost $18 per month, and a fancy new car averaged $610. But, more importantly, America had plunged into the Great Depression with over 13 million Americans (almost of 25% of the workforce) out of work and the wealthy facing staggering income taxes—as much as 63 percent. In the midst of these dark days, a group of local Laguna Beach artists attempted to create something magical to lift the spirits of their neighbors and, yes, hopefully sell a few paintings. As a result, the brainchild of local artist John Hinchman came to life with the support of the Laguna Beach City Council: the Festival of Arts. But the world-acclaimed pageant we know today bore little similarity to the stepchild spectacle put forth in 1932. That year, a ragtag fleet of a few dozen artists crudely hung their paintings on anything they could find, such as trees, buildings, and fences along Laguna’s main street in the hope of attracting tourists to the first festival. Other local painters exhibited their works in their homes. The Pageant thus humbly opened August 13, 1932, and Virginia Woolley’s Flower Market was one of the first paintings sold—a work now housed in the Festival of Arts’ permanent collection. But the first festival failed to truly catch fire and new ideas were needed. The following year, as a publicity stunt, the artists put together a parade of volunteers dressed as characters from famous works of art and marched through town in their get-ups. At the end of the parade, they all crammed into a tiny booth and began to hold poses LEFT: Junior Art Exhibit Vintage, Courtesy of the Festival of Arts; Mark Porterfield, spokesperson for the PIMCO Foundation, which sponsors the Junior Art Exhibit, admiring a junior artist, Courtesy of the Festival of Arts; Festival of Laguna Beach by Joane Cromwell(1884-1969), oil on canvas, 1937, Permanent Collection, Courtesy of the Festival of Arts. from their paintings as tableaux vivants, or living pictures. This first parade and showing was named The Spirit of the Masters Pageant Though it wasn’t much yet, the organizers thought they might be on to something. In 1935, businessman Roy Ropp took the helm of this “living pictures” show and, with the help of his wife Marie, they turned the small production into a full-fledged event, complete with staging and music and, at the same time, renamed the event The Pageant of the Masters. The event then drifted gypsy-like from site to site until, in 1941, the City purchased the present six-acre festival site from The Irvine Company—and thus the creation of the Irvine Bowl, home of The Pageant of the Masters from that summer to this day. From its humble beginnings 80 years ago, the sold-out Pageant drew 150,000 fans to its shows in 2011 and the future continues to look even brighter. Indeed, the Festival of the Arts is now California’s premier fine art exhibition and is one of the longest running art exhibitions in the state, hosting artists every year since 1932 except during World War II. The Festival has not squandered its success. Rather, it has become a living, vibrant part of the local arts community and is dedicated to giving back as much as it has gained to local artists, schools, and the education and teaching of the arts. It awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarships and grants to a host of cultural and artistic institutions, always staying true to its goals: to promote, produce, and sponsor events and activities that encourage the appreciation, study, and performance of the arts. The Festival’s Junior Art Exhibition is one of its most popular events. Consisting of over 300 pieces of art from Orange County’s school children (K–12), the skill, creativity, talent, and quality of the art astounds and amuses viewers year in and year out. The Festival also hosts Youth Arts Education Days, including art classes for children of all ages. This year’s Pageant honors the masters in its production: Genius, a show about the relationship between art and the advances in science and technology. “I’m curious about the materials and techniques used by the old masters,” Diane Challis Davy, the show’s director, notes. “One hundred and fifty years ago, artists had to make their own paints! You almost had to be a chemist or alchemist.” Challis Davy also says there are plans for some advances in this year’s production in sound and light design and digital projection. The 2012 Pageant will have nightly performances from July 7 through August 31. The performance includes works of Genius from Michelangelo, Rockwell, Manet, Seurat, Rodin, and van Gogh as well as more than a dozen other artists. Other popular events on the Festival’s grounds include the Art, Jazz, Wine, and Chocolate Thursdays; Jazz on the Green on Saturday July 7, 14, 28, and August 4, including performances by acclaimed artists such as saxophonist Jessy J and Poncho Sanchez. A host of workshops, family events, and even cooking classes are also offered. The Festival also includes the popular and family friendly Sawdust Art & Craft Festival and Art A-Fair, an accessible fine art festival, both of which are located adjacent to the Festival grounds. Last winter marked the debut of their newest boutique on Melrose in West Hollywood, offering a contemporary collection of leather, silk, and wool clothing and accessories. Striving to produce a line of timeless pieces to be worn during any season, their custom designs are continuously changing. Ingenuity in the Making photographs by Tony Florez

There’s something awe-inspiring about someone who branches out from the norm and creates a new path all their own. Oftentimes, the starting point of such success stories share a common denominator of passion. At the mere age of 15, James Morrison knew he wanted to be a hairdresser, first becoming a Saturday boy at a salon in Glasgow, Scotland—with a string of duties such as sweeping up and fetching lunches—to eventually emerging as co-founder of TONI&GUY/TIGI in the US. Although James’ preeminent styling career nominally began a long time ago, his current role as owner of Morrison Hair in Laguna Beach might just be his greatest endeavor yet. Fate stepped in when James and his wife Rachel were in Laguna last year and noticed a beach bungalow for sale. “We lucked out. We were driving down PCH, I noticed it was available, and the rest is history,” says Rachel, who works with James at the salon. “It’s a perfect location for us—we love Laguna Beach and knew that we wanted our business to be located in our own community.” Indeed, there is something distinctly charming about their beachside bungalow turned hideaway salon—and not just because it’s near the Pacific. “The space is so relaxed, inspiring, and we really feel at home there; it has character that is difficult to find in a commercial space.” James and Rachel met eight years ago at a conference in Orlando, Florida. After three months of dating, they moved in together and quickly started working together. “Just like any good partnership, you both have to have your separate talents and responsibilities so you’re not stepping on each other’s toes. As a couple, though, you

have to be cognizant that you’re not always talking about work.” In the intervening years, varying between building an empire and James’ coaching and seminars on motivation and business building, they had two children, John and Madeline. Although James and Rachel are a husband and wife team—with James handling the hairdressing and creative side, and Rachel handling the daily operations—they consider this a family business and an endeavor that involves their children. “We wanted them to grow up being exposed to and involved in an entrepreneurial business. That’s the beauty of hairdressing—it’s one of the last industries that mom and pop shops can be successful in.” bask: What part of this business are you most passionate about? James Morrison: The transformational quality. The ability to take someone who is not making the most of their hair and change the shape a little bit to transform their look. I love when clients say to me, “I love my haircut.”

40

it needed to have a masculine feel. I tried to steer away from anything feminine, so I chose elements like our Eames-inspired styling chairs, industrial light fixtures and dark paint colors. I also wanted it to have touches of his British sensibility, so we have a couple of Union Jacks on the walls and yummy British chocolates on hand. b: How do you juggle a new business and two small children? RM: It’s not easy to juggle. I spend a lot of nights getting work done so that I can spend time with my kids during the day. James can also be flexible with his schedule. We are so lucky to have that flexibility because most parents don’t. We have a rule that our weekends— Sundays and Mondays—are for family, and we don’t allow any work to be done on those days. b: What’s a perfect day for you and your family? RM: Going for a walk at the Montage, having a late breakfast at Zinc, then taking an early afternoon nap!

b: What’s a typical day at the office? Rachel Morrison: James tells me his ideas and I try to figure out how to make them happen.

b: What do you hope to see in the future for Morrison Hair? JM: A salon full of happy clients and stylists.

b: Your salon is a beach bungalow—is it a representation of you in any way? RM: I was decorating the space, but since James is the figurehead,

Finding Balance at the Beach Blending the best aspects of both hard work and taking time to unwind, the Balanced Wellness Retreat at The Resort at Pelican Hill culminates in the ultimate way to focus on the self and emerge feeling refreshed. Vacationing provides a prime opportunity for indulgence—relishing the best spas, savoring the richest foods, and cramming as much relaxation as possible into a precious few hours before heading back to the grind. So, practicing moderation during your time away might initially seem like a senseless exercise in deprivation. However,

44

The Resort at Pelican Hill has created a retreat that makes an intriguing case for prioritizing your health while on vacation, and does so in a way that caters to more than just those enviably fitness-minded few. Rather than treating a vacation as a chance to squeeze in enough rest to catch up on

lost time, the Balanced Wellness Retreat facilitates finding equilibrium between relaxation and recreation. It also cushions the post-vacation crash by helping you to take a step back from daily stresses, find a maintainable fitness path, and ultimately determine a balance of inner and outer health that is both achievable and appealing.

The program begins before you step foot on the pristine grounds of the resort, when the attentive Spa staff contacts you with a survey to fill out indicating your expectations and personal preferences for the retreat. Don’t worry about giving less than desirable answers—no response is frowned upon, and the Balanced Wellness team takes your particularities into account in every aspect of the program, making for a customized experience to suit your needs and desires. In fact, the friendly demeanors of each and every Pelican Hill staff member will make you feel instantly centered and settled, giving the impression of staying at a friend’s (stunningly appointed and fortunately located) home rather than a hotel. You can further personalize the one- or twoday retreat by selecting among a variety of invigorating fitness classes, soothing spa treatments, and thoughtful discussion and introspection time to create a thoroughly rejuvenating experience for mind and body alike. By your side throughout the experience is Cara Marshall, the enthusiastic and eminently approachable Balanced Wellness Instructor. Her genuine passion for healthy living in conjunction with her endless encouragement makes cardio and yoga classes feel more indulgent than exerting. Time flies by as you engage in enjoyably vigorous workouts such as a brisk walking loop through the outstanding natural beauty of nearby Crystal Cove beach. The variety of fitness options prevents any chance of boredom while working out, and instills motivation and inspiration for a healthier future following the retreat. From Dynamic Yoga to hone flexibility and balance to Functional Strength to utilize your own body’s weight and capabilities to tone and strengthen, you’ll find no lack of options to help ascertain your preferred mode of fitness, making it that much easier to incorporate your favorite parts of the retreat into your daily life upon return to the real world. In keeping with the pursuit of balance, the retreat entails much more than exercise alone. You’ll also have several chances to try Pelican Hill’s delicious cuisine, with the pleasant surprise that the dining selections for the weekend are, in fact, selected primarily for their health benefits. Most meals are enjoyed at the comfortably casual Coliseum Pool & Grill, a stunning

46

eatery overlooking the perfectly round Coliseum Pool and the Pacific Ocean. You may also venture to Andrea Ristorante for some of the freshest pasta you’ll ever encounter. Regardless of where you dine, the cuisine will inspire one of the happiest revelations you’ll come to over the weekend: healthy food can be just as palatable and flavor-filled as its evil, fat-packed stepsiblings. Pelican Hill is the only resort with access to the Irvine Ranch®, a farm from which chefs obtain the freshest local ingredients to create meals with a skilled eye for fresh and seasonal recipes. Over the weekend, you’ll experience this in dishes such as bean salad complemented by heirloom apples and roasted beets, courses centered around fresh tomatoes and avocadoes bursting with flavor, and succulent gnocchi with vegetable ragout and tomato coulis. For the ultimate in relaxation to round out your weekend in paradise, visit The Spa for treatments specially chosen to amplify the sense of peaceful revitalization pervading the retreat. Luxuriate in the Slow Down massage, which encourages total relaxation with rhythmic strokes and soothing scents, as well as the Amber Gold Signature Massage, a combination of dry brushing exfoliation and Swedish massage that inspires full-body rejuvenation. On top of the retreat’s pre-planned activities, you’ll find an abundance of alternative diversions to fill the free time slated into your stay. Check out the live weekend entertainment at Pelican Grill and the Resort’s living-room style Great Room, dabble in some world-class golfing, sun yourself by the saltwater pool, or take a complimentary shuttle to Crystal Cove. Of course, keeping in mind the retreat’s focus on inner harmony, you may simply want to unwind and bask in some quiet time in your accommodations. Especially considering the exquisitely appointed Bungalows and Villas, complete with soaker tubs, lush beds and lounging areas, fireplaces, and ocean-view terraces upon availability, it’s more than likely you’ll just want to savor the superb comfort and elegance of your lodging. We’ll take any chance we can to extend the feeling of tranquility that defines a true vacation beyond the trip itself, so a weekend wherein every aspect is formulated to foster an ongoing sense of inner calm and contentment sounds like a pretty good gamble to us. British Columbia:

Western Province

Bask Beyond.PRINT.indd 2

When I was invited to visit British Columbia, the answer couldn’t have been easier: with the diversions of a city and the relaxed lifestyle implicit in the outdoor-centric region, a trip to Vancouver and Whistler offers the best of both worlds. Whether it’s your first or fifteenth visit, the experience always feels unique and somewhat unexpected. Set between the province of Alberta and the Pacific Ocean, British Columbia’s landscape is more than just an impressive view of land and a temperate climate: it’s home to moss-covered rainforests and mountains ready for hiking, historic landmarks waiting to be discovered, beaches to comb, and cities to explore. Around every corner is an opportunity to discover British Columbia anew.

Deciding where to take my next holiday is often a daunting task. But when it’s time to really get away—time to escape from the computer, the iPhone, clear the days from endless meetings and schedules—I know, and choosing my next travel destination moves to the top of the list. Then comes the “where?” If you’re anything like me, you’re locked in to traveling when your kids are free from school, and to the places that have the most optimal climate (depending on the time of year). I’m a bit systematic in this regard— New York in the winter for the holiday with New Year’s Eve spent somewhere glorious, and Mexico in the summer where I am sure to receive the comforts of five-star luxury—and, of course, where I can simply fall off the map for several days (and later explain there was no Internet access). I’m often torn between a ravishing time in the city and decompressing in some serene escape that makes me feel like I’m a world away from home.

Stanley Park

First stop, Vancouver:

It’s no wonder Vancouver has been recognized as one of the world’s most livable cities—renowned for its sustainability, stunning scenery, luxury retail shopping, culture, and cuisine, you’ll find all this and more in a trip to this distinctive city. JUST PASSING THROUGH Stay at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. First opened in 1927, this hotspot has welcomed several entertainment legends including Elvis Presley, Katharine Hepburn, and British royalty. Recently renovated in 2011, this boutique hotel is nothing shy of spectacular. It has 156 elegant rooms, outfitted with every modern amenity, an exquisite 52’ indoor saltwater lap pool (that will make you want to take up swimming just to find reason to get in) and an extensive spa menu. Its contemporary cuisine restaurant, Hawksworth, features a classic and glamorous interior and offers an array of menu items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Aside from the luxurious amenities and impeccable service, the location truly puts it on the map—it’s not Manhattan, but you can certainly walk everywhere, and there’s no telling what you might discover along the way. RosewoodHotels.com

YOUR WEATHER The weather in Vancouver is predictable, respective of its distinct season. The best time to visit Vancouver is during the summer months. Just after spring, when the trees and shrubs have blossomed, and the summer temperatures range in the 70s and 80s, you’ll find a perfect climate to spend time enjoying the scenery and innumerable outdoor activities.

YOUR FREE TIME There are two stops you absolutely can’t miss—a day trip to Stanley Park and another to Granville Island. From Rosewood Hotel Georgia, you’re within walking distance of Stanley Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America. This place is a dream—if you’re feeling ambitious, rent a bicycle (at Spokes Bike Rentals on the corner of Denman and Georgia) and plan to spend the day sightseeing. Be sure to stop for ice cream, breathe, and simply take in the views; a jaunt like this is sure to make you feel like a kid again.

Next stop, Granville Island: Unlike a trip to Catalina Island, this is literally a five-minute boat ride to an urban oasis filled with shopping and food. Spend the day exploring the Public Market, where food-mad chefs and vendors sell produce and tasty pastries. The Market is brimming with good things to eat, so go hungry, and plan to indulge in flavorsome foods all day long. YOUR RESTAURANT Even if you spend the day filling up at the Market on Granville Island, be sure to save room for later meals. Part of the joy of city life is in the experience. The people you meet on the street. The storefronts you see when you’re walking. All the things you often miss while driving. Explore. If you’re up for something with a unique ethnic flare, you absolutely must try the izakaya dishes at Guu on Thurlow Street. Keep an open mind and even those with a discerning palate will not be disappointed. A few simple staples: Bellaggio Café on Hornby Street, White Spot on Georgia Street, and Caffé Artigiano on Hornby Street—all guaranteed to become your go-to standbys when you’re out and about in town. GranvilleIsland.com

YOUR TRANSPORTATION Take a taxi to the hotel and experience Vancouver on foot. Then venture up to Whistler on the Rocky Mountaineer; you won’t want to miss this sensational experience. Take part in a three-hour rail journey from Vancouver to Whistler, hosts of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, and experience the panoramic views from the train ride, including beautiful cascading waterfalls, snow-capped mountain peaks, and everything in between. You’ll also be treated to a delectable meal made with fresh ingredients indigenous to the bountiful regions of British Columbia and Alberta. This extraordinary and breathtaking journey will give new meaning to transportation during your excursion. RockyMountaineer.com continued

WHISTLER: Don’t let the mountains deceive you—this quaint village is idyllic for year-round activities, especially during the summer. Whistler is famous for its impressive terrain and snow, but their summer environment will open your eyes to a whole new world of outdoor exploration that revels in the balmy summer atmosphere. JUST PASSING THROUGH Nita Lake Lodge might be Whistler’s best-kept secret, until now. Perfectly situated outside the hustle and bustle, directly on the shore of Nita Lake, you can experience the surreal views of mountain, lake, and forest all at once. It’s quiet. It’s peaceful. It’s exhilarating. And a perfect prescription for getting away. During your visit you will be surrounded by luxury, comfort, and service—with no stone unturned. It truly is a complete getaway. And when you feel like venturing into town, walk or ride along the lakeside path; it will be one of the many reasons you fall in love with Whistler. NitaLakeLodge.com

Nita Lake Lodge

YOUR FREE TIME You’ll find multiple must-sees in Whistler to suit a variety of interests. One of my top picks: a visit to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre for an out-of-the-ordinary jaunt through aboriginal culture, at least once. It’s astonishing. The building and grounds are simply beautiful, and were built to resemble the traditional dwellings of a Squamish longhouse and Lil’wat Istken. Inside is a museum and gallery featuring their ancient and modern cultures and interactive exhibits, including craft workshops (for all ages). This is an incredible learning experience for the whole family—and be sure to try the famous, freshly-made Bannock bread at the Centre’s café before you leave. In fact, order two, and take one home with you; it’s that good. SLCC.ca

Once the kids have had their fill of exploring, drop into the Pemberton Distillery for a more adult diversion with artisan spirits tasting, from vodka to whisky. Potato fields turned organic distillery: this is a tale of perfection most definitely worth experiencing. Take a behind-the-scenes tour, sample the award-winning spirits, hear the story about how this boutique distillery got started, and plan to take a bottle of your favorite handcrafted spirits home with you. A trip to Whistler could never be complete without venturing into the breathtaking landscape. Experience views of the incomparable setting with Ziptrek Ecotours for a bit of adventure, or the Peak 2 Peak Alpine Experience for a milder way to see similarly stunning scenery. With Ziptrek, you’ll whiz through a course of ziplines affording views of the white-water river below, and mountains and trees on all sides (Ziptrek.com). Or, take Peak 2 Peak’s gondola to the top of the Whistler Blackcomb alpine for sightseeing, hiking, or simply grabbing a bite at the mountaintop eatery with unbeatable views. Peak2PeakGondola.com

For fine dining with locally sourced ingredients, stop into local hotspot Araxi, where you’re sure to be delighted by award-winning Chef James Walt’s creations (Araxi.com). For a totally divergent experience, North Arm Farm, a family owned and run organic farm, offers pick your own strawberries and raspberries, an onsite bakery and deli, and picnic lunches from its full kitchen. If you can, schedule your trip around one of North Arm Farm’s scenic outdoor dinners; the menu selection is fresh from the farm, and the backdrop is absolutely picturesque (NorthArmFarm.com). Finally, if you’re looking for a warm, casual atmosphere and to-die-for pizza, don’t miss out on Creekbread—a local hangout complete with a wood-fired oven and community-centric vibe. Creekbread.com

Alfresco Adventures Venturing into the Lowcountry South Carolina is like stepping into a whole new world, from lifestyle to cuisine to the mystical, magical beauty and tranquility of the landscape. Nestled into this spider web of rivers, marshes, trees, and the very essence of picturesque small-town America is the remarkable Auberge resort,

The Inn at Palmetto Bluff.

In this implicitly Southern place you’ll find both otherworldly beauty and a distinctive warmth and charm that will make you feel instantly at home in an otherwise unfamiliar place. The Inn provides the staples of Southern living that will introduce you to a summer vacation like no other—relax on your private veranda in a Cottage Suite and listen to the crickets, or immerse yourself even more fully in the culture in a larger home, with options such as panoramic views of the river and waterways. No matter your choice of lodging, you’ll find lush, expertly appointed interiors that meld perfectly with the simplicity and refreshing quality of the region. Once you step outside, you’ll only become more entranced by the singularly stunning scenery, and Auberge continues to excel in this department with a multitude of pre-planned opportunities to help you take full advantage of your surroundings. Revel in both the luxury and unrivaled outdoor environment of Palmetto Bluff with the Full Moon Howl getaway for two. On the full moon of each month, guests can partake in a twoday (or longer) stay in a lush guest cottage, complete with a bottle of Jermann Pinot Noir (appropriately named “Red Angel on the Moonlight”) and breakfast each morning at

Buffalo’s with a view of the May River, or relaxing fireside at your cottage. At night comes the real magic: a kayak tour along the May River under the full moon where you’ll be swept away by the ethereal beauty that only comes out in the dreamy, luminescent moonlight. If you find that you already have plans for the full moon, never fear, Auberge provides a multitude of other ways to enjoy the resort’s natural surroundings at any time of month. Go alligator tracking in a safe environment that still provides a thrill, or visit Ossabaw Island, one of Georgia’s legendary barrier islands for a tour of the seemingly endless wooded uplands, freshwater ponds, and marshlands complete with tidal creeks, all of which is accessible only by boat. Alternatively, take a horseback riding lesson with famed jockey Eddie Maples, learn about the ecology of the low-country waterways, observe the extensive bird community, or take a driving tour along the River Road Preserve that affords views of magnificent live oak canopies and hidden wetlands. However much adventure or tranquility you seek, Palmetto Bluff offers a distinctive experience that will feel a world away from the familiar Southern California beaches in the best way possible. Alfresco Adventures The short, spectacularly scenic drive up the coast to sun-soaked Santa Barbara is the perfect invitation to a sojourn into one of the most stunning regions of California’s remarkable Central Coast. This little pocket of paradise offers many charming lodging options, but one of the finest is the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore.

Photo: Peter Vitale

Aside from the sumptuous accommodations themselves, the location leaves little to be desired, especially for outdoor enthusiasts of any level. Just steps away lies Butterfly Beach, an idyllic slice of coastline that exemplifies the particular beauty of this region of the California Riviera. The Biltmore offers myriad ways to help guests enjoy this opportune setting, such as complimentary beach cruisers to cycle along the coastal bike path to downtown, where you can peruse the famous State Street. If you find that you don’t want to leave the entrancing hotel grounds, you won’t lack activities to keep you as busy or as relaxed as you like, all while benefiting from the fresh air and impeccably manicured landscape. The Resort hosts monthly Stargazing Nights each summer, where you can take in the sparkling sky on a balmy night and even learn about the constellations from expert astronomers, while sampling unlimited appetizers, beer, and wine. For a trip down memory lane to campfire days of burnt marshmallows and salty sea air, the Biltmore also offers complimentary S’Mores Nights to relish your surroundings in a cozy, nostalgic reverie. During

58

the day, try a guided or solo walking tour through the impossibly green grounds and check out the exotic botanic life representing rare specimens from around the world. For anyone seeking a little more adventure in the great outdoors, there is also an abundance of water sports for thrill-seekers: enjoy the Pacific with kayaking, surf lessons, jet skiing, fishing and more. Or, warm up to the landlubber ways and try croquet, lawn bowling, rent some dune buggies, or just enjoy the views while staying dry on a horseback ride. If neither land nor sea appeal, take to the skies in a hot-air balloon for one of the most splendid views you’re likely to find anywhere. The Biltmore offers the perfect locale to experience the best of Santa Barbara with a blend of both exhilaration and relaxation for the perfect summer getaway. FourSeasons.com/SantaBarbara

Scottsdale What's a better day than one spent hitting the links all morning and luxuriating in a five-star hotel later in the afternoon, sipping a cool beverage as the sun wanes over a vast desert sky? If it's hard to imagine a more satisfying way to spend a day, then Scottsdale, Arizona, is going to make you a very contented person. Scottsdale, set in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, is a place so filled with beauty, tranquility and top-notch golf courses that many pro golfers choose to call it home. From champs like Fred Couples, Betsy King, Paul Casey, and Tom Lehman to current PGA Masters winner Bubba Watson, Scottsdale boasts many of the sport's best players as resident locals, for good reason. With over 200 courses to pick from in the area, this corner of the Arizonan desert just teems with incredible challenges to conquer. TPC Scottsdale (TPC.com/Scottsdale) is the permanent home of the PGA Waste Management Phoenix Open, and Arizona's only PGA Tour facility. So that's a must-play on any serious golfer's list, especially the Stadium Course where the tournament is held. This

one has wide fairways and plenty of green, a bit of a change from many of the other courses in the surrounding desert. Watch out for the famed 16th hole, where you can easily find yourself mired in the sand, as bunkers with serious lips to escape line the fairway. And since it is only a par 3 hole, that will take some doing. Troon North (TroonNorthGolf.com) might just be the location of Scottsdale's two most legendary courses, both designed by champion Tom Weiskopf. You'll find it hard to concentrate as you step up to the tees on either the Pinnacle or the Monument course, for the rocky, cacti-covered vistas that stretch out before you are truly breathtaking. But pay attention, especially on the Pinnacle's 7th hole, where giant boulders on the right of the fairway have been known to eat a ball or two. On the 9th, take a moment to drink in Pinnacle Peak off in the distance; the views from this spot are vast and unforgettable. And the 16th "signature" hole has everything; water in front and bunkers on the side—and some bunny rabbits racing across, too, just for laughs.

Boulders Resort and Spa Golf Course

Another top place to play (and stay, too) is the Boulders Resort and Spa (TheBoulders.com), where two 18-hole courses, the North and South, await.

and you can take advantage of the Golden Door Spa that's part of that vast property. It's an oasis of relaxation, complete with a private spa pool to luxuriate in after your treatment.

If you're pressed for time, choose the South Course: designed by Jay Morrish, it highlights the incredible rock formations—boulders everywhere—that characterize this part of the desert. Morrish carved the South course right out of the hillsides, so you'll almost feel like you've entered the wilderness as you move along the course. Take care when playing the 5th hole that you don't whack your drive into the Boulder Pile, a 20-story rock formation that is guaranteed to eat your ball. But do stop for a moment to drink in the view; it's a gorgeous sight, even if it is a tricky par 5 to play.

For a smaller, more intimate hotel experience, choose the Hermosa Inn (HermosaInn.com). Located closer to the center of town, the Inn has just 34 luxury casitas and offers personalized service in a gorgeous setting. The Inn served its first purpose as an art studio for Western artist Lon Megargee in the late 1930s and later developed into a guest ranch. The hotel has since been completely renovated, but still remembers its famous owner with Lon's, the Inn’s top-flight restaurant helmed by Chef Jeremy Pacheco. This eatery alone is reason enough to choose the Inn as home base. Pacheco’s locally sourced dishes are filled with enticing flavors of the Southwest and beyond, and you can even try some surprisingly good Arizona wines with your meals.

Playing these and other excellent area courses (check out the Phoenician and Talking Stick for two more terrific ones) will leave you ready to relax afterward, and that's where some of Scottsdale's best resorts come to the rescue. The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale (FourSeasons.com/ Scottsdale) is located nearby Troon North and offers beautiful, private casitas furnished in a classic Southwestern style. Add in a signature spa treatment like the "Head over Heels" adventure for two, the outstanding fare served up at the hotel's Talavera steakhouse, and the incredible nighttime sky filled with crystal-clear constellations (there's even a docent available on Friday evenings to point them out), and you may want to take up permanent residence here. Stay at the Boulders

62

If you eventually tire of playing golf every day of your Scottsdale visit, consider adding a bit of culture to your trip. Take a ride out to Taliesin West, where famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright spent the last 25 years of his life, and where, to this day, his principles of architecture are still taught to budding architects. Daily tours are available, and the vast desert views are almost identical to those of Wright’s era in the 1930s. It's definitely a part of Scottsdale you won't want to miss—unless, of course, you've been shooting under par every day of your trip on those gorgeous golf courses. Then stay on the links!

ELECTRONIC INNOVATION for Relaxation and Recreation

Each more impressive than the last, an amazing array of new electronic products continue to be integrated into our daily lives, and the levels of quality, power, functionality, and connectivity of each gadget seems to soar from good to great. More than ever, the standout differences are in the details that contribute to the best user experience.

Smart TVs Your next TV will almost certainly be “smart,” or Internet ready. Many new models are Wi-Fi enabled so that they connect to the Internet out of the box, allowing you to access a new world of online content. You may even choose to abandon traditional cable TV altogether in favor of streaming your favorite shows online! Samsung looks to be the market leader in HDTVs, and is beating Apple to the punch by offering Smart Interaction, the ability to control the 7000 and 8000 series of Samsung HDTVs with voice, gesture, and face recognition using a camera and microphone built into the elegant and narrow chrome-finished bezel. Simple voice commands like “channel up/down,” “volume up/down,” or simply calling out a number cause the TV set to oblige. A wave of the hand, and the gesture control wakes up, turning your hand into a pointer and selector. Turn the set on and the TV recognizes who is in the room and asks which user’s preferences should be presented. The Smart Hub is the heart of Samsung’s Smart TV interface. It looks suspiciously like a tablet desktop, complete with 1,400 apps available from the Samsung TV App store. The apps range from the familiar, such as Twitter, weather, YouTube, Netflix, and HBO GO, to

76

music services like Pandora, MOG, and vTuner, to fitness facilitators like Fitness VOD and Six-Pack Pro. Some even offer built-in Skype for video conferencing around the globe. In essence, each app is a channel or network unto itself. Samsung has opened up the platform to developers, so many more apps are doubtless soon to come. Google TV is integrated into Samsung’s Smart Hub for universal search. This is where the future of TV gets especially interesting. Who needs a programming guide when Google will search for not only what’s on now, but also everyplace that your desired program is available in every form and price on every platform? Layer onto this some good recommendations and you will be flipping through your favorites faster than on any VOD system or DVR. But there’s more! Bigger and sharper is the rule for HDTVs. Why go out to the movies when you can experience Samsung’s stunning 55-inch Super OLED 3D HDTV at home? Due in stores the second half of the year, its picture quality is breathtaking. You’ll find yourself flinching watching sports, movies, and more in 3D on this incredibly vivid screen. Active pixels create truer colors, smoother motion, brighter picture, and outstanding contrast ratios while decreasing weight. You have to see the quality of the picture to believe it! Samsung.com

Know Thy Body Wearable body sensor technology now goes far beyond the basic fitness training with heart rate monitors from Polar and Motorola. These multimodal sensors can help you get in peak shape while tracking your health in new ways online. Many of these devices are designed to be worn 24/7 to give you a complete, accurate picture of your levels of health and fitness by uploading detailed data wirelessly and automatically to the Internet via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Under the assumption that more knowledge about your body equals more control, these devices are the latest essentials for an active life that is increasingly synced online. Polar.fi, MOTOACTV.com The Body Media armband has snagged considerable attention from celeb spokesperson Jillian Michaels’ endorsement, claiming it as an indispensible tool for her Biggest Loser contestants and her latest weight loss programs. Sensors in the band record all of the calories you burn, as well as your physical activity and sleep patterns. The data is fed to the Internet wirelessly and back to you in easy-to-read graphs and charts to help you track and manage your lifestyle. BodyMedia.com Withings, Tanita, and Fitbit offer Wi-Fi-connected smart scales to help keep us honest about our daily weight. The scales send the data to smartphones, web browsers, or even Facebook, if you want encouragement from friends. Just step on the scale and your weight and even body composition are instantly recorded on your personal webpage. Withings.com, Tanita.com, Fitbit.com The Basis body sensor is a wearable sensor in wristwatch form that, in addition to monitoring your activity, continuously tracks your heart rate. How your heart rate changes throughout the day is a key indicator of how you handle stress and your overall level of health and fitness. MyBasis.com For the most ardent body monitoring enthusiasts (including hostage rescue teams and special forces squads), the Zephyr is a wearable sensor for ECG (that’s right, actual electrocardiogram, not just heart rate), respiration, body temperature, and motion that can store 21 days worth of data and allows your doctor to monitor your vitals at any time, even on a smartphone while at dinner. Zephyr-Technology.com Point-of-View (POV) Action Videography like a Pro! Want to launch your own YouTube channel? Impress your friends with white-knuckle videos of your action sports exploits? The ultra-compact, lightweight GoPro HD HERO2 Camera is the way to go. At an MSRP of $299.99, this is a surprisingly high-quality, durable HD camera. The GoPro uses any standard SD Card to store up to 1080p video at 11 Megapixels with up to a 170-degree wide-angle field of view. GoPro cleverly and conveniently packages its camera in kits for mounting on helmets (Outdoor Editing), vehicles (Motorsports), and water-sports (Surf Edition). Coming in the third quarter will be a Wi-Fi upgrade for remote control and monitoring of multiple GoPros via a Wi-Fi BacPac accessory and a free smartphone or iPad app. To see for yourself, view some of the amazing results obtained when shooting with GoPros on the GoPro website. bask BRIEF US & WORLD ECONOMY What a difference a few months can make! Last year’s fears of double-dip recessions and Greek tragedies have given way to large job growths (636,000 job gains in the first quarter), improved investor confidence, and the best first quarter for the S&P 500 in 14 years (up 12.6%). The question is, will this growth continue or peter out like it did after the spring gains in 2011 and 2010? With a large Band-Aid on Europe, a 7.5% soft landing in China and continued modest growth in the US (2 – 2.5% GDP), we expect the economy and financial markets to churn mostly sideways through the fall, and not experience the 16 – 18% mid-year drops of the previous two years. Not that this leaves us with no concerns; for example: first quarter earning estimates continue to be revised downward, Spanish debt, weak BRIC growth, absence of QE3, lower than expected job growth in March, Iran, North Korea, to name a few. However, this year we have oil at a 7-week low, no Japanese earthquake, a shale gas boom in the US, a decline of significant jobless claims, and no recession fears. In fact, for the first time since the Great Recession, private business owners that I meet with regularly have reported significantly higher sales this year.

78

STOCK MARKETS

FIXED INCOME

Our 2012 yearend S&P 500 forecast of 1500 (up 19%) doesn’t seem as farfetched as it did in early January (OptivestInc.com, Resources/Newsletter/Optivest’s First Quarter 2012 Newsletter). However, after a 30% advance from October 2011 lows, we expect some future dips and consolidation before further meaningful gains. Stock indexes and managers’ performance were

Correctly forecasting and timing the eventual end of our current “zero interest rate environment” and the start of the next phase of steady inflation and interest rate increases will be the “call of the decade.” However, with the 10-year Treasury crossing back and forth over the 2% level 26 times over the last 6 months, we’re not attempting to make this call. Instead, we continue to employ our “inflation balanced income” portfolios to balance portfolios with both traditional bonds and inflationsensitive income vehicles to capture reasonable income without taking a big interest rate directional bias. Long-term, higher inflation seems inevitable, yet a future stronger dollar and energy/farming efficiencies should prevent us from the levels of high inflation of the 1970s and 80s.

influenced significantly by their degree of long exposure to Apple, Inc., whose stock price increased from $405 to $600 (a 48% gain) in Q1 2012. Despite forecasts of $1,000, someday Apple will stumble and we are keeping a 10% (from recent high) stop loss in place while hoping the run continues. Long-term, we are still comfortable with our forecast of a 15,000 Dow Jones in 2013 (OptivestInc.com, Resources/A Rational Argument for a 15,000 Dow Jones in 2013).

US ENERGY INDEPENDENCE WITHIN 10-15 YEARS? I recently had the privilege of sitting with several of the nation’s energy experts

baskmagazine.com

FinalB_POBbrief_0612.indd 2

crevier.indd 1

6/6/12 10:22 PM

and was amazed to hear the progress that is being made in the US to become energy self-sufficient in the next 10 – 15 years (and a net exporter after that). Huge new oil/gas/shale fields are being expanded in North America, Brazil, and the Arctic. Solar power, thanks in part to nanotechnology, is becoming more efficient at a compounded rate of 30% per year. Nuclear is not dead. There is plenty of coal to strip mine. Natural gas is at multi-year lows and in abundant supply. However, according to Shell Oil’s CEO, world oil demand will double by 2050 and 90% of that new demand will come from non-OPEC countries, with a full half coming from China. And, these numbers assume gains in efficiency—without this, demand would triple by 2050. So what does the future look like? From my reading and discussions, this new energy demand will be met from multiple sources, most of which only make economic sense with oil prices over $100 per barrel. The US imports about 12 million barrels of oil per day (MBPD) of the 18.9 MBPD that we use. Three quarters of our oil usage goes to transportation. Clearly, more efficient engines will help, as will

incremental production increases in natural gas, biofuels, and electricity (which are mostly produced from coal). Alternative energy and energy efficiency only attract research and business investment when it’s a profitable alternative to traditional oil-based energy use. The good news is that $4/ gallon gasoline will help the US become more energy efficient, greener, and self-reliant. The bad news is that higher gas prices are probably here to stay. Fortunately, if Americans want to cut their gasoline costs in half, they can simply buy a car with twice the gas mileage—a beneficial lesson we can learn from Europe. Solar, wind, and water movement energy solutions are making great strides in efficiencies and are coming closer to becoming viable economic alternatives. The main benefit is that once a plant is set up (at considerable cost), there is no further “fuel” cost to produce electricity—the plant is thus not susceptible to higher costs of coal, natural gas, etc., making energy production costs easier to forecast.

OPTIVEST NEWS Optivest has engaged SageView Advisory Group, a $14 billion pension fund advisor, to provide us their proprietary research and access to their team of research analysts. To compound Optivest’s comprehensive wealth management strategies, SageView’s highly regarded institutional risk analyses and research processes are now available to Optivest’s high-net worth clients—a unique partnership for Orange County. All processes deploy capital over six different risk portfolios for growth and income, across 26 separate asset classes. These custom portfolio allocations have been

80

stress tested and mean variance aligned to offer lower volatility and less correlated returns than traditional stock/bond/cash models. SageView’s research team includes: six CFAs, five CPAs, two CIMAs, and seventeen AIFs. We are excited to bring this welldisciplined team of research analysts to our Optivest clients.

SUMMARY We remain confident in our belief that the US economy will continue to grow at 2 – 2.5% this year, and unemployment will fall to 7.5% (currently 8.1%). As seemingly unexciting as this is, it should provide the calm that the world markets need to stabilize and set the platform for future growth. We are excited to bring the large SageView Advisory Group research team to help our Optivest family office clients optimize their investment future. john

ethanwayne photographs by Tony Florez

The Legacy of The duke This month, bask highlights ethan wayne as our Man of Style. an orange County native and chairman of the john wayne Cancer Foundation (jwCF), he has dedicated his life to finding a cure for cancer, and exudes California cool as only a wayne man can. Practically born and raised on the beach, ethan lives in staples like simple, well-made jeans and Tshir ts, influenced by his father to seek out style that is best suited to an active lifestyle.

Ethan opens up to Nicholas Gannon in our Summer issue story, The Legacy of the Duke, about upholding his father’s legacy and his devotion to supporting the search for cancer cures. During our photo shoot at Ethan’s beachside Newport home, his charming chocolate lab, Wes, never left his side. Our conversation ran the gamut of Ethan’s many interests, but focused especially on the philanthropic mission that has become his life passion. Though he grew up on the coast, Ethan also spent a great deal of time traveling with his father, also known as “the Duke,” to movie sets from Mexico to Colorado where on-set lodging was nothing like that enjoyed by today’s stars. RV’s and tents were home while on set, and, true to the Duke’s on-screen

82

personas, a Zippo lighter and a pocketknife were all you needed to get by. Ethan’s father impressed upon him the work ethic, “if you’re going to do something, do it well,” a concept that is clearly reflected in all of Ethan’s pursuits. As a young boy, he remembers sweeping gravel at home and his father showing him how to execute this very simple task by taking time to do it the right way. Along with hard work, John instilled in Ethan the kind of courage one would expect from the Duke, and the kind of courage needed to fight such a daunting disease. John’s belief that, “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway,” has helped fuel Ethan’s dedication to conquering cancer. Of course, Ethan’s passion also stems from having to live through

the pain of loved ones fighting this cruel disease—in large part from nurturing his father through his battle and losing a sister to lung cancer. His father told him, “If you have an opportunity, you have an obligation.” Ethan has taken his father’s words and the power of his legacy as motivation to push JWCF forward. Currently, the foundation is working on bringing a groundbreaking procedure called EVA/PCD to the mainstream, which can improve an individual’s response to chemotherapy. This is just one outstanding example of the ongoing efforts Ethan and his sedulous team at JWCF undertake

education, awareness and support. We will continue to fund novel ideas that will improve patient outcomes. In Orange County, [we] support groups at Hoag Hospital, CHOC, and UCI. We underwrite screenings for those without insurance and through our “Spot a Spot” campaign, we have successfully educated 50,000 Orange County youths about how to be prepared for an active lifestyle in the sun and how to spot a bad mole. We have also created active support groups around John Wayne-inspired adventures, like fly fishing, white water

is being scared to death “ Courage but saddling up anyway.” in the fight for a cure. Whether or not you have personally experienced the painful effects of cancer, everyone has the power to help end this disease once and for all. “Team Duke,” a program within JWCF, helps supporters to find unique ways to give to the foundation. In the words of John Wayne, “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes [to] us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.” No matter what the past held, there’s always another chance to use your distinctive talents and resources to help others find a tomorrow free of disease. bask: What is your role at John Wayne Cancer Foundation (JWCF)? Ethan Wayne: As the foundation’s director, I oversee the management of the foundation, partnerships, the grant process, and collaborate with a hardworking, dedicated staff to accomplish the foundation’s mission. b: How does JWCF benefit Southern California residents? EW: The mission of JWCF is to bring courage, grit, and strength to the fight against cancer by funding research,

84

rafting, rock climbing, and stand up paddle boarding, that remove patients from the institutional path and help to reignite the spirit they had before cancer. b: How did JWCF come to exist? EW: John Wayne passed away in 1979 due to stomach cancer. [Before he passed], he asked my brothers, sisters, and me to use his name to help the doctors fight cancer, and in 1985, we formed the foundation to do just that. The foundation funded the research that led to the formation of the John Wayne Cancer Institute, which has grown to be world-renowned. b: How are you carrying on your father’s legacy? EW: John Wayne was able to inspire people of all ages. [He] always said, “If you are going to do something, do it well.” We try to represent him with the enterprise the way he represented himself in life, straightforward and a true partner if we work together. The foundation has a mission and we work hard to execute it.

b: How can OC residents get involved and support the foundation? EW: By making a donation to the JWCF or by joining TeamDuke.org. Team Duke is the fundraising arm of the JWCF that was formed so people can join in the fight against cancer by utilizing whatever activity they enjoy doing as a fund-raising activity. b: What are you passionate about outside of JWCF? EW: Anything outdoors—kite surfing, running, biking, and playing the guitar. b: How did you come to love the outdoors? EW: The beach is where it’s at for me. I have always liked being outside. I’ve always preferred rural to city, even as a young boy. I loved dirt roads and natural landscapes. Maybe it’s because I spent so much time with my Dad on location and on [his yacht,] the Wild Goose, exploring. b: What kind of music do you like to play on the guitar? EW: I can only play a few songs right now. I started a year ago; I like all kinds of music, always have. The guitar is like life, we aren’t very good at it in the beginning, but it is a never-ending opportunity to improve and evolve. I am so glad I finally started to play. b: When did you get your dog? EW: I’ve had [Wes] for about 3 or 4 years now; he came from a rescue and is a great companion. After my father died in 1979 I went to the pound and got a dog [and] I’ve pretty much had one ever since. b: What do you love about living by the beach? EW: Just walking out on the sand barefoot and looking at the Pacific. It’s breathtaking and it’s right here. My office is across PCH from the beach and many mornings I go down early to run on the sand and then get wet. If it’s windy in the afternoon I’ll go out for a session of kite surfing. I, and everyone in my office, try and ride to work as it’s a great change from the car. I’ll go to the market on my bike; I try to use it more and the car less when possible.

b: What is your individual style? EW: Laidback and casual—things that transition easily, have good functionality, and are timeless over trendy. b: Do you enjoy shopping and fashion in general? EW: I’m not really a shopper. That being said, I will hit the RVCA or Hurley store myself. I do appreciate quality and craftsmanship and that goes for clothing as well. When I have to get a different category of clothing I will look to someone who I can trust to help me find items appropriate for me. The group at David August are talented and know how to pre-select and fit for their clients. I would always gravitate to timeless over trends and fit over frill. b: What are you most comfortable in? EW: Jeans, t-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, boots, and the occasional suit.

I get time with a person “ when who is fighting for their life—it resets my priorities.” b: What’s next for JWE and JWCF? EW: The coffee table book John Wayne: The Legend and the Man will launch in October 2012. In Spring 2013, a multi-media book giving an authentic look at John Wayne’s life will be published by Insights. We’re also working on an artisanal whiskey with the makers of Hundred Acre Wine, an in-depth 6-10 documentary, and have a plan to launch an apparel program in the near future. b: What inspires you? EW: When I get to spend time with a person who is fighting for their life—it resets my priorities.

David Yurman Boutique Unveiling photographs by Stefanie Keenan

The iconic David Yurman brand hosted a delightful evening to celebrate the completely renewed South Coast Plaza boutique. The lovely ladies and proud supporters of the Harvesters partnered with David and Sybil Yurman to present extraordinary pieces of jewelry for guests to view and, in a few lucky cases, take home. While guests perused the boutique’s baubles they sipped on champagne and noshed on some chic light bites while waiting for the exclusive opportunity to meet Mr. Yurman and discuss his beautiful pieces of art. David Yurman showed the Second Harvest Food Bank gracious support by announcing that a significant percentage from all sales that evening would go directly to aid the fight against hunger.

REVISIONS OF REALITY Russian artist Irina Sharie creates unique, vivid, and dynamic oil paintings. Born in Moscow, Russia, she immigrated to America in 1998 to live in Southern California. A resident of Newport Beach, Irina says she gets a great deal of inspiration from the beauty of the California Rivera. Her works of art are often provocative, sometimes nostalgic, yet always classical in their timeless beauty. With immaculate attention to detail, paintings by Irina Sharie are instantly recognizable. They have a story to tell and carry an undeniable mystique. She calls them Revisions of Reality. “In my landscapes, for example, the dense Russian forests I grew up with and California’s palms merge and form a new reality,” states the artist. The reality she paints in her people series is a mystical dreamlike experience; fanciful, alluring, and thought provoking. Her flowers paintings explode with unexpected colors and are another representation of her endless imagination. Using her bright palette of colors, Irina creates whimsical paintings of fish in marine life revisions of reality that are truly addictive. Irina is getting a lot of recognition in the art world. Her paintings have made their way into the collections of some of the more learned and savvy art lovers including the Roosevelt family, descendants of President Roosevelt, and discriminating restaurants such as Mastro’s Ocean Club restaurant at Crystal Cove in Newport Beach, where her fish series paintings are prominently on display.

The evening proceeded with both silent and live auctions, dinner, dessert, and dancing, as well as a moving presentation honoring the former CHOC patients in attendance. Guest Speaker Janelle Bittinger also spoke about the journey she experienced with CHOC when she gave birth to her daughter Bella at just 28 weeks, and the way CHOC fought right along with her for her new baby’s life. Architects Crucial for Better Homes There’s more to an architect’s role than meets the eye. In a finished home, you see the aesthetic harmony and consistency that distinguish the architect’s touch – but what you don’t see is equally important. If your goal is a beautiful, tailor-built custom home or the revitalizing remodel of an existing house, a good architect is key to a successful building experience. What qualities define “good” architects? A: From the design aspect, they have the passion, artistic diversity, and experience to confidently embrace the architectural style you want. Good architects make the project about you, not them. They’ll help you site the design properly and can create incredible homes on even the most difficult lots. They’ll analyze the site’s solar axis and views to determine the best orientation for floor plans, ask questions about your lifestyle, and design the home (and landscaping if you like) to flow comfortably with how you live. They’ll coordinate the various building and landscaping professionals working on the project, make sure the structural drawings and mechanical and electrical concerns work cohesively, and secure necessary approvals and permits from homeowners’ associations and government bodies. They’ll produce a thorough set of coordinated drawings with specifications for the materials, fixtures, and finishes best suited to your budget and goals.

looking out for your interests. Afterward, if you have maintenance or other questions, the best architects are always there for you, even 20 years later.

But don’t architects add to the cost of a project? A: No, with solid, experienced architects it’s the opposite. First, even the best architects would go out of business if they weren’t priced competitively. So an architect you like but assume is beyond your price range, is probably more affordable than you think. Good architects save clients money in countless ways because the designbuild process is familiar territory for them. Homeowners who bypass architects almost always end up spending much more than they anticipated. A good architect prevents

Brion Jeannette Architecture

has been a leader in creative residential design and energy-efficient building techniques since the early 1970s. Lead architect Brion Jeannette (AIA, NCARB) and principal architect Amy J. Creager (LEED AP, AIA) have designed some of the most exciting homes, internationally and most especially in Orange County, and have earned an enviable reputation for achieving in architecture what others cannot. that by keeping a close watch on everything during construction. The architect will know a range of licensed contractors, which ones are reputable, which are best suited for your project and budget, and will help you negotiate the contractor’s fee. The best architects will even save you money years into the future by designing your home with passive-sustainable energy features that significantly reduce utility costs.

What else can architects do? A: They can create healthy, comfortable living environments that enhance your quality of life every day. They educate you and help you maintain realistic expectations – yet their design solutions should take you beyond those expectations and give you a home that’s more than you ever hoped it would be. A good architect is the keystone of a successful building experience.

What about when the construction starts? A: Truly good architects are as involved in the building phase as they are in the design. They’ve accumulated resources, professional liaisons, and expertise over the years to keep projects moving smoothly and to help secure reliable construction bids. Most important, the architect should be your champion in the field,

photo: The Food Network

bask@table | by heidi ristau

Fast Food Fast food has been an unavoidable trend for years, but food trucks provide a new take on this old idea in a much more appealing way—specialized and even gourmet, many food trucks offer quick options for meals on the go that are as deliciously unexpected as they are accessible. The Food Network has highlighted this phenomenon in their televised competition The Great Food Truck Race, and among several idiosyncratic budding restaurateurs, Orange County local Daniel Shemtob took home the gold with his own bistroon-wheels, The Lime Truck. Here, he opens up to bask about where his long-standing love affair with food began and how it manifests itself today. TheLimeTruck.com

What got you cooking? Fortunately, I was raised in an environment that allowed my palate to develop early on; my parents always took me to great restaurants growing up. I learned quickly it’s not worth eating unless you eat well. The Orange County demographic is the result of a large influx of cultures: a true melting pot. There is such a broad array of flavors and cuisine styles in the area, which was a significant contributor to my passion for culinary innovation.

What inspired you to open your own food truck? I was at the ripe age of 21 with a concept and no real restaurant experience. Acquiring capital for a truck is much easier than the alternative.

Jason Quinn, Jesse Brockman, and Daniel Shemtob, the winners of the Food Network's The Great Food Truck Race, standing in front of their winning vehicle, The Lime Truck.

What led you to participate in The Great Food Truck Race?

What foods do you always have on hand for unexpected visitors?

Why not? Opportunity of a lifetime. National exposure and brand development—yes, please!

I am always sure to have homemade pico de gallo. I also love fresh fruit panna cotta—they store for a week, and are very quick and easy to make. Albacore or seared ahi are also great summer fish to have and taste great with everything.

What are your favorite summer dishes? Anything fresh, light, cool, and crisp. Think exotic ceviche with interesting fruits and seafood, guacamole and chips, watermelon and prosciutto salad. Basically fruit-influenced savory dishes.

What dish do you recommend for a party?

Best part about your job? My job allows me to be innovative; it revolves around eating—which is essentially the most common denominator between humans. People enjoy food, so I am usually surrounded by people in a state of bliss.

One of my favorites is a caviar waffle cone— creamy, soft cheese with caviar on top. photo: Cyrus Antia

TACOS.

Baja Fish Tacos has several casual eateries across Orange County serving healthy, fresh Mexican food. The blackened shrimp tacos are a standout. Flour tortillas are lightly toasted and then topped with a generous portion of succulent shrimp, crunchy, green cabbage relish, creamy Baja sauce, and a sprinkle of salty Cotija cheese. Forgo the rice and beans and opt for the chips and guacamole, reserving a dollop to top your taco. BajaFishTacos.com

Street food never tasted so good.

Tucked behind Rudy’s on the Peninsula, Bear Flag Fish Company is a bare bones fish market and seafood restaurant. Most of the clientele is dressed in bathing suits, cover-ups, and flip flops, stopping by on their way to or from the beach. The grill is packed with slabs of fish—salmon, albacore, swordfish, and halibut—ready to be served in tacos and burritos or on salad. The panko-grilled tacos are made with Basa, a Vietnamese catfish that has been slightly charred. The fish lies on a warm corn tortilla and is covered in cabbage, pico de gallo, and Tommy Sauce, a citrusy, salty, sweet punch of flavor that complements the fish without overwhelming its fresh simplicity. BearFlagFishCo.com; visit their new location in Crystal Cove

Sol Cocina’s Taco Tuesday is one of the best in Newport, offering a wide variety of reasonably priced margaritas, Mexican beers, and tacos. But don’t make it the only day you come, or if you do, be sure to venture off the special menu now and again, or you might miss one of the house specialties, such as the Taco Vampiro. It’s not the healthiest option on the menu, but it is one of the most delicious tacos you’ll ever eat. Two corn tortillas are stuffed with melted cheese (basically a quesadilla) and then wrapped around carne asada, grilled Serrano chilies, green onions, guacamole, pico de gallo, chipotle aioli, and finished with even more cheese—a bit of crumbled Cotija. SolCocina.com Just off the circle in Old Towne Orange, Gabbi’s Mexican Kitchen draws you in with its lively, sultry bar-scene lighting and colonial-style decor. Inspired by her travels south of the border, Gabbi Patrick’s passion for creating innovative dishes while preserving her traditional heritage can be tasted in every dish. If you are a fan of queso fundido, try the deliciously simple Tacos de Rajas. Melted, creamy Oaxacan and Cotija cheeses are mixed with Pasilla chilies that have been roasted, peeled, and cut into strips. The gooey mixture is then enveloped in thick corn tortillas made only minutes earlier in the open kitchen. GabbiPatrick.com While not a street cart, Taco Mesa is Orange County’s answer to a casual taco joint. The brightly colored building you pass on the way to the DMV offers a variety of healthy and authentic Mexican food made from organic ingredients cooked daily in small batches. Tacos Al Pastor are a brilliant combination of spicy grilled pork, sweet pineapple, fresh onions and cilantro, all atop warm corn tortillas. Don’t forget a trip to the salsa bar, spilling over with freshly made salsas and escabeche—those delicious pickled jalapenos, carrots, and onions you’ll want to devour immediately. TacoMesa.com
