elcome to our 3rd annual Summer issue of bask Magazine. This has been one of my favorite issues to work on. I always enjoy the creative minds of all my partners and love seeing the creativity and wonderful editorial come together.

ON THE COVER...

Producing an issue is always a labor of love for all those involved. I, personally, am very involved with the fashion shoots and covers of every issue. From start to finish, this edition’s fashion shoot was exactly what I envisioned. It always starts with an idea, like a piece of art. Then, the wheels start spinning and our amazing team gets to work! This issue we needed a beachfront home for our canvas. Fortunately enough, our good friends, Mike and Nancy Meyer of Laguna Beach, graciously opened their doors to bask. What a gorgeous home, and we personally thank them for their generosity. Next, I thank our talented photographer, John Watkins. Without his eye behind the lens, along with our amazing editor-in-chief, Amy Adams, we could not have produced such a gorgeous summer fashion shoot or cover. And never do we take for granted Lois Kinsey (Lois Kinsey Beauty), who for years has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to pull together our hair and makeup team each issue. She is an amazing talent. So here’s to all our remarkable partners who consistently collaborate with us to make each issue fabulous—thank you. Hopefully all of you, our readers, enjoy this edition both for its beautiful creativity and its engaging editorial content. There is something here for everyone to ponder and explore, from stunning homes listed for sale by our Surterre Properties partners or beforeand-after remodels, to our travels to Mexico and to wellness retreats in Napa Valley. Enjoy our Summer issue and we will look forward to seeing you again this fall. Here’s to a fabulous summer with friends and family!

This stunning image from our summer fashion shoot was captured by photographer John Watkins at a beautiful oceanside abode on the sands of Laguna Beach. Here, the model wears a Becca by Rebecca swimsuit, available at Everything But Water South Coast Plaza; an Ivy Bracelet, available at Kendra Scott Fashion Island; and Alexis Bittar necklace and earrings, available at The Passionate Collector Newport Coast.

s president of bask Magazine and co-founder of Surterre Properties, I am fortunate to be able to view and share with you the most spectacular homes in California via bask. When we launched the magazine more than three years ago with the dream to deliver great lifestyle and fashion content, as well as a beautiful and sophisticated design aesthetic, our intent was to show all forms of luxury… in balance. To some, that is an afternoon nap; to others the freedom that comes with private jet travel; to still more it is having the most current in home trends or the latest from the world of fashion. From the very beginning, often based upon information gleaned from our readership, we have been evolving while staying true to our roots, and are now beginning to showcase more of the magnificent homes in our communities—from grand bay fronts to green cottages to extraordinary gardens. All are shown through our commitment to luxury in balance and what that means to you and how you live life.

Today we continue to dedicate ourselves to bringing you an inside look at extraordinary people and the places they call home. Whether it is the fashion we choose to wear or the design we create within our homes, it’s about our lives and who we are. For me that’s exactly what great design is meant to be, and we want you to bask in it… to soak it all in and enjoy that the moment is yours.

Thank you for your loyalty. We look forward to sharing more stunning residences with you for years to come. We are here for the pleasure of your perusal, so feast your eyes!

Heather’s other top beach accessories: her Eugenia Kim straw hat and cat-eye Celine sunglasses.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky. In a first-of-its-kind presentation of expressionism—not just from Germany, but from around the world—this LACMA exhibition features stunning works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, Gauguin and others. There are 90 paintings and 45 works on paper from over 40 artists that tell the story of the birth and evolution of modern expressionism.

THE JERSEY BOYS

June 24 through July 13

Inspiring, thoughtprovoking and utterly captivating, James Verbicky’s striking multimedia works have won him worldwide acclaim in the art community. This summer, JoAnne Artman Gallery in Laguna Beach will present “Divisionaire” New Works by International Artist James Verbicky, a must-see collection of the artist’s signature layered collages, which combine vintage advertising imagery with rich colors and textures that appeal to all the senses. And for those who still can’t get enough of the arts, the Artist Reception for the exhibition on August 7 will coincide with the Laguna Beach ArtWalk.

The Jersey Shore comes to Orange County at Segerstrom Hall this summer. No, not Snookie, but The Jersey Boys. This 2006 Tony Award winning Best Musical lyrically tells the tale of how four blue-collar boys became one of the most famous acts in history, creating their own sound and selling over 175 million records worldwide. “The crowd goes wild,” raves the New York Times. Perhaps a bit of an overstatement, but still a truly fun and enjoyable show.

August 19-31

ONCE - The Musical will take center stage at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts for an unforgettable performance that includes a creative and extraordinarily gifted ensemble cast. Based on the film of the same name, ONCE is a stunningly honest portrayal of the power that music has to connect and allow diverse people to create something rare, emotional and beautiful together. At its heart, the musical is a passionate celebration of life and love that on some level will resonate with all audiences, making it this summer’s must-see show.

ARCADE FIRE

August 1-2

After closing out the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival both nights to rave reviews, the Montreal-based band Arcade Fire returns to Southern California for yet another two-night stint, this time at the more upscale, and air conditioned, Forum in Inglewood. Featuring everything from a glockenspiel and French horn, to a harp and mandolin, the band’s unique style has caught the heart, and ear, of many a musical fan.

Yes, it’s Yes at the City National Grove of Anaheim. As a part of a 35-date summer tour, the iconic band of the 1960s and 1970s will play two of their classic Edge—a albums, Fragile and Close to the Edge record still regarded as one of the finest progressive rock albums of all time—plus a host of other hits. Bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes and singer Jon Davison recreate such hits as Edge, You and I Roundabout, Close to the Edge and many other classics.

September 5-6

Musical talent extraordinaire Elvis Costello, along with pop singer, songwriter and pianist Ben Folds, share the stage with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in a special concert under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. A remarkable songwriter and performer, Costello quickly left his London pub roots as a part of the British punk and new wave movement to morph into his own unique sound with his band The Attractions—and they were both inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. He has won a Grammy Award and was named number 80 by Rolling Stone in their 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. baskmagazine.com

Culture (Art) ART & SOUL TERRENCE DWYER, PRESIDENT OF THE SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS, PRESIDES OVER A TREASURED, CULTURED INSTITUTION. FINALLY, HE STEPS INTO THE SPOTLIGHT, TAKING CENTER STAGE TO SHED LIGHT ON ANOTHER EXCITING SUMMER SEASON OF MUST-SEE SHOWS, WHILE ALSO SHARING HIS OWN PASSION FOR THE ARTS THAT HE CHANNELS INTO BRINGING WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTIONS TO THE CENTER. HERE, DWYER PRESENTS THE ART OF CONVERSATION. What don’t most people know about you? I’m a pretty good cook, particularly seafood and pastas. I have seven brothers and sisters. And I was a DJ in college, and later, a private pilot.

And still flying high! What’s the most satisfying element of your current post? Leading a team [that] takes great pride in the Center and its cultural offerings. Loving the arts as I do, and seeing what the Center brings to the community makes this a dream job. Ever more inspiring to me is knowing how the Center can, and will, make

important and lasting contributions that will improve and better the quality of life in our community.

Your top must-see productions to calendar? Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev—the opportunity to see two of the greatest dancers in the world today. True stars who are beautiful, passionate, charismatic and so talented. The reception they receive from audiences and the box office reassures us that dance remains a vibrant and popular art form. The next two seasons hold so many new works, new productions and, for the holidays, there’s ABT’s Nutcracker. Talk more about the Center’s commanding position in the world of dance. Since its founding, the Dance Series has contributed to the Center’s national and international reputation as a leading presenter of the most acclaimed dance and ballet companies in the world. A great deal of the credit goes to our Executive Vice President, Judy Morr.

What draws dance talent to the Center? They want to come to Southern California and take joy in being part of the Center’s series. Just this season, we presented U.S. premieres by The Hamburg Ballett and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, as well as West Coast premieres performed by the Alvin Ailey

American Dance Theater. For summer, Osipova and Vasiliev dance two world premieres commissioned for them by the Center. I’m pleased to report that we are committed to increasing the number of these new commissions and world premieres that audiences will see first here at the Center.

In what ways does the arts impact the Southern California community? In addition to the sheer economic impact through payroll, taxes, contributing to the travel and tourism business, the arts contribute invaluably to innovation generation and developing a creative economy. We all know budgets for school arts programs have been cut: Segerstrom Center feels a deep obligation to be a leader with this challenge. Our programs reach more than 300,000 young people and families each year in more than 200 schools and five counties. Your vision for the Center? To be an outstanding cultural and civic partner contributing to Orange County. The Center has unique cultural resources that can be used to bring people together to affect positive change in our community. We have plans for significant new artistic and community engagement programs. SCFTA.org

SIMPLY beautiful

With Claridge + King, co-founders Laurann Claridge and Lizbeth King are taking the chic set back to basics with their elegant line of woven wares designed to give form its function. The highly edited collection of versatile looks all feature quality workmanship, fine fabrics and meticulous fit in proportion to a woman’s frame. While garments like the Great White Shirt, a classic button-down that Claridge calls “a workhorse in a woman’s wardrobe,” is free of unnecessary flourish, it’s still thoroughly refined, featuring a French placket revealing mother-of-pearl buttons (“their placement obsessively contemplated,” naturally) and four-inch-long singlebutton cuffs, all finished by hand. But “the idea of manufacturing a piece with an expiration date looming is a wasteful exercise and something we’ll never do,” express the tastemaking twosome, who take their design cues from a “pulled back and quiet” playbook, imbuing every classically au courant look with classic sophistication and a timeless ease. “I want the essence of the woman who wears our pieces to come through, not a riot of color or pattern,” Claridge explains. “It’s about striving for a bit of elegance every day.” This summer, look for the label’s lovely linens and palettes of blue hues, from cornflower to midnight. In the works is a bespoke collection of jackets and coats—a perfect fit for any fall closet. ClaridgeAndKing.com

Handmade’s Tale

For Trish Papadakos—who has a culturist’s enthusiasm for different design cultures—home really is where the heart is. From this particular pulsation sprang Trish + Co., which produces meticulously-made objets d’arts in themed, true-to-material collections, each inspired by a specific person in Papadakos’s life. Pieces in each collection share a similar design sense for multiple pairings. Take the Curious Gardener: an ode to Papadakos’s green-thumbed great-grandmother-in-law, it literally interprets natural beauty with wooden cutting boards made from locally and ethically sourced walnut; wooden garden stakes made from repurposed Western red cedar; and beautifully embroidered pillowcases featuring leaf arrangements. All are rooted in Papadakos’s endeavor to create unassumingly lovely ornaments with heirloom quality and pass-down appeal. “Beautiful materials, simple designs, with a story behind it all is really what I strive to create.” And the story continues. Talk to artist and designer Imogen Heath and a pattern emerges. Cut from the same cloth as her creative clan, Heath’s artistic calling came early, and she immersed herself in a cultivated learning curve that would eventually lead to creating printed and woven fabrics for interiors and fashion realms, and now via a fusion of tradition and technology, “geometrical and organic motifs” for her own textile design studio. “Driven by a curious attitude to materials,” the patternmaker is “experimental and playful” in her approach, which might involve anything from a “broken stick dipped in ink” to photos she’s taken—sometimes both. The idea, Heath explains, is reinvention, to create something truly unique. She does this by applying her artistic touch to a mélange of markings. Of these, she confesses to a sustained flirtation with her simple, yet vibrant Meadow Lime motif, while also fancying the bolder Rosa Blue—a shock of saturation in trendy indigo. Expanding her repertoire, this chic Brit recently launched an exclusive range of trays and tea towels for heritage retailer Heal’s, while continuing to work on diversifying her oeuvre of fabrics for a larger collection to arrive in 2015. Surface beauty, indeed. ImogenHeath.com

Well (Auberge) YOU DON’T NEED A REASON to visit L’Auberge Del Mar, but you’ll certainly find one (or two) after a jaunt to this idyllic beachside oasis. The journey truly begins as you make your way off the highway and toward the ocean. Slowly snaking along a two-lane route blanketed with parked cars reveals tiny black specks of what you’ll eventually deduce is a scheme of wet-suited surfers scattered some 50 feet seaward. Even if you’re not an avid surfer, you’ll place yourself among their ranks, knowing that they’re most likely having the time of their lives. Reach the Del Mar city-limits sign, and you’re nearly there. Worry not, should your mind drift toward regret—they’ll be plenty of time for the races next visit.

The epitome of a seaside retreat, and just a few miles south of Solana Beach, the estate-like L’Auberge Del Mar sits on more than five gorgeously-landscaped acres in the heart of Del Mar’s picture-perfect village. Greetings by both a valet and a grand set of French doors opening to a long corridor featuring magnificent views of Pacific blue heralds an arrival here. The site is captivating, so much so, in fact, one might feasibly whisk right past the check-in counter just to see where that breezy view actually leads. Beyond the entry avails an equally enthralling outdoor scene, flourished with a dense, beach-like culture of guests, each tucked into a hot-spot by the bar or otherwise lounging poolside—position matters not, as every seat in the house provides an enviably epic ocean outlook. 46

Boasting 120 guest rooms and seven luxury suites, the resort’s oceanside locale is an ideal domain for perfectly positioned accommodations. With many of the rooms featuring private balconies, you’ll likely find reason to lounge al fresco— whether it is to spy sunrise over a warm cup of Joe, or sunset with your favorite flute of crisp bubbly. One of the many great features about this spot is that they allow guests’ pooches to travel in tow, removing any owner worry that furry loved ones are possibly suffering separation anxiety, and making it possible to actually leave town without a care.

Rounding out this seafront scene are top-notch retailers and lively outdoorsy eateries just a block away from the hotel. So when it comes time to choose a table, rest assured there are myriad restaurants within walking distance. And, if you don’t feel like leaving the comforts of the hotel, well, dining fireside in one of the private bungalows at award-winning Kitchen 1540 is always a sure thing. The service is impeccable, and the menu replete with a cornucopia of fresh, local organic produce along with a variety of free-range meats and seafood. Seldom, it seems, has not needing a reason for something been so enticing and sublime a prospect. LAubergeDelMar.com

LA PAZ

A SUN-DRENCHED OASIS ON THE SEA OF CORTEZ SETS A LUXURIOUS SCENE FOR SURREAL UNDERSEA EXPLOITS.

Had I known that swimming alongside a whale shark roughly the length of a bus (and a youngster, apparently) was not only possible, but also strangely and deeply peace-providing, I would have dove into uncharted waters far sooner than during a recent sojourn to La Paz, Baja California Sur, where the Sea of Cortez takes shape as a marvel of underwater allure, with its most noted endorsement coming from none other than Jacques Cousteau, who famously dubbed it the “Aquarium of the World.”

Beyond (Costa)

No mere sales pitch, these shimmery azure seas boast a thriving aquaculture, including 85 percent of the world’s ocean mammals, among them gray whales, manta rays and sea lions—best known for toying with the human spectators who make the five-mile boat ride out to the barrier island of Espiritu Santo, where, in clustered clans, these intelligent creatures sun on rocks and sound guttural, rowdy howls across the snorkeler-filled seas.

Edging this flourishing ecosystem is the environmentally conscious CostaBaja Resort & Spa. Billed as the only five-star property in La Paz, CostaBaja is the nucleus of a 550-acre development, featuring a collection of upscale residences scattered on lushly landscaped hillsides. Steeped in authentic Mexican character, but modernized for luxurious La Paz living, residences are beset with dramatic panoramas filtering in nearly year-round sunshine (roughly 340 days), as are the hotel’s 115 rooms. Though more modest in scale, room accommodations are warm, contemporarily appointed and plenty comfortable, with interiors reflecting a subdued expression of mountain, desert and sea surrounds.

The patio of a Las Colinas townhome sets the scene for late-afternoon inspiration.

Beyond (Costa) Resort amenities wink at proximate inspirations. Espiritu Spa doles out a full complement of spa therapies ( Juan Carlos is the man to call for a massage), while Steinbeck’s Restaurant references its writer namesake, who produced a literary work while in the region. Also here is the sexy-chic Beach Club, with sun loungers and an infinity pool; Mexico’s first Gary Player Signature golf course; and the Marina Village, a walkable, U-shaped waterfront lined with dining options, expedition outfitters and various shops hugging the 250-slip CostaBaja Marina, home to some the largest yachts I’ve ever seen outside of a Michael Bay movie. (Steve Jobs’ super-yacht “Venus” dropped anchor right here.) Proximity is also a perk of roosting at CostaBaja, as it’s mere minutes from downtown La Paz, which oozes old-world charm with a cosmopolitan twist. Indeed, the once sleepy city has awakened to a

buzzing expat community, but not at the expense of its colonial character, which is enforced by a strict building code forbidding a flood of high-rises; a ban on net fishing; and protection of treasurable historic holdovers such as Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Paz—occupying the site of an original Jesuit mission, it houses paintings recovered from old missions and reverberates with the past exploits of the Dominican priests who built it in 1861.

Directly across the street is an open courtyard abloom with bright flora and a gazebo that, on the day of my visit, produces a street violinist whose virtuoso stringmanship mesmerizes with interpretations of swoony movie scores—his Cinema Paradiso alone elicits two encores from onlookers. On quiet side streets are unassuming outposts like the generationsold Taller de Ceramica y Regalos, run by a clan of ceramicists who create gorgeous hand-painted wares.

The Clubhouse at CostaBaja Golf Course offers a modern take on tradition.

“COSTABAJA IS MERE MINUTES FROM LA PAZ, WHICH OOZES OLD-WORLD CHARM WITH A COSMOPOLITAN TWIST.” Beyond (Costa)

If there’s a bustle to be found, it’s along the boardwalk, which gives way to the abundant natural beauty just beyond it in the Sea of Cortez. Here, Espiritu Santo is the star attraction. At 11 miles long, the UNESCO World Heritage site protects 200plus atolls and coastal areas, including quiet beaches basking in sunshine and solitude. While perched on one of these deserted, pillow-soft stretches, marveling at the unearthly calm, the scene is so arresting I seriously consider making a Robinson Crusoe-like move right here. Logistically it’s a pipedream, but in La Paz, anything, it seems, is possible—whether trailing sea lions listing to their sides for a tickle, watching manta rays fly over the water with most unexpected maneuvering, or swimming alongside the largest fish species known to man. So, should you find yourself in frenzied pursuit of a whale shark, don’t worry, surrender to the experience. Let your fins find their gear, and your soul, welcome serenity. It’s La Paz, after all—the place of “peace.”

Seek refuge at a sprawling beachfront oasis in magnificent Punta Mita. A pool table moonlights in the media room, and should connectivity call, there’s wireless Internet, eight flat-screen TVs and a state-of-the-art sound system. Guest privileges include playing two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses at the award-winning Punta Mita Golf Resort, and access to a second-to-none staff, featuring a gourmet chef, housekeeper and concierge. TEARING DOWN THE WALLS From literally toiling in the trenches for his father to fronting his own firm, designer James Glover transforms a San Clemente home into an everyday oasis. WRITTEN BY AMY ADAMS DESIGNER JAMES GLOVER

PHOTOGRAPHY ALLEN CARRASCO LANDSCAPE BILL HALL

T

“THIS PROJECT TAUGHT ME

he words “home sweet home” quickly come to mind when entering this beachside abode. But when designer James Glover first set eyes on the very same dwelling, a more accurate description of his thoughts might well have been, What am I doing here? After all, he recalls, “This particular house was in shambles. But as soon as I saw the view, I saw the potential.”

Then, with Glover’s reputation for juxtaposing indoor and outdoor living spaces preceding him, the designer promptly went to work to see it reached, backed by the full-service firm that bears his name, James Glover Residential & Interior Design. “It was a total remodel,” recounts Glover of transforming the shabby lot, which required a full gutting, right down to the studs. Because, he explains, “The existing house was laid out in multiple small spaces that didn’t take advantage of the views and exterior living space.”

So, in order to take advantage of Southern California’s temperate climes, which, on average, hover around 70 degrees year-round, Glover’s vision for the remodel called for an open, expansive design scheme that, as he puts it, allowed for “interior space to expand outward and spill into the rear yard. ” One of his greatest architectural changes to the house was opening the great room, a process that not only involved removing interior walls to create a space that opened to the yard, as planned, but also hoisting up the ceiling, exposing city vistas and a striking 270-degree panorama of the Pacific below that even humbled the man who masterminded its possibility. “I’ve lived in San Clemente most of my life,” elaborates Glover, “and was amazed at the view from this property.”

Home (Glover)

Despite minor obstacles, including strict guidelines about altering the home’s facade, its overall design is unique in that it continues to maintain a traditional exterior. “We knew it was a good design and it would complement the neighborhood,” Glover says. “We just had to communicate the design effectively to all parties who had concerns.” Now, Glover communicates with bask more of what’s on his design mind.

How did you get started in this business? I started in the trenches; literally digging trenches. My father was a builder/ developer [who] thought it was important for me to work at a young age, so as far as I can remember, I was working on jobsites. I started doing manual labor and as I got older I learned how to do all aspects of construction. I particularly enjoyed finish carpentry. I took drafting courses in junior high and high school. My father started having me draw some of his plans. Although I was new to design, I learned so much being involved in both the design and construction of a project. I actually drafted my first constructed home when I was 15. When do you know to say “yes” to a project? It can be difficult when making the decision… The questions [our firm asks are]: will the client give us enough time to plan so that their goals can be achieved; will they give us creative freedom and trust our design abilities; will all parties be proud of the project; and will the project be able to be photographed as part of our portfolio? If we can say yes to these questions then we know it will be a successful project. I feel very fortunate that I’ve had great projects and great clients. It is the ultimate compliment when the same client comes back to us to do another project. Describe a signature James Glover design. I would say that my signature is [integrating] interior and exterior spaces [while utilizing] organic materials and finishes. I can apply this signature to the whole range of architectural styles, from traditional to modern.

OPPOSITE | A high ceiling and clerestory above a light shelf magnify the panoramic view. Home (Glover)

Home (Glover) How do you select the contractors you work with? We are a full-service firm so we need to know that the contractor we choose to do the project shares the same visions and values as our firm. We need to be able to work together to create the best outcome for our client. We select contractors [who provide] quality craftsmanship [and have both] great organizational skills and the ability to communicate. What do you love most about this particular house? What I love most about this house is how it makes me feel. As you enter the home, a sense of peace comes over you. We tried very hard to capture the outside view and bring it into the home as part of the architecture. As you

enter the building through the large walnut pivot door, you experience the view, [which] is framed by the living space. The rear doors pocket inside the wall cavity and the rear wall disappears and extends you out towards the view. The material palette of natural stone and wood add to the soothing feeling. The high ceilings, natural material choice and panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and city below create a very serene living experience. What inspires you? People who are curious, open-minded and passionate inspire me. I find inspiration in architecture, but also in other creative outlets such as art, fashion, music and graphic design. Creativity in any medium is infectious.

“They are all EASY to work with and STAND by their PRODUCT.”

Beach Chic! Beach towels turned stylish slipcovers revive outdoor dĂŠcor this summer.

I

t’s summer, and for most that means spending time at the beach. We bring our sunscreen, umbrellas, books, and, of course, our favorite towels. When the day is done, we pack up and go home, leaving behind sun, sand, and surf. Now, wouldn’t it be nice if our own backyards recalled such beach memories? Well, with the idea of achieving exactly this, I repurposed beach towels so as to enjoy their plush comfort even when home. First, I looked around my patio and found a number of pieces that beach towels would enhance. Settling upon a threepiece wicker sectional and throw pillows that could do with a new look and feel, I selected luxurious, artistic towels with intriguing patterns in a bold color palette. Made from 100 percent Turkish cotton for exquisite coziness and comfort, the towels pamper both body and soul. The actual transformation process was quite simple: After estimating the amount of towels needed based on the size of the sectional, I then produced a pattern in order to cut and sew the towels for a custom fit—tight yet loose enough for easy removal and washability. Making towel slipcovers is both practical and functional as well as aesthetically pleasing and totally comfortable. And, not only does my wicker patio furniture look exciting and new, but all are easy to wash and both furnishings and cushions are protected. Plus, whenever I sit up or lie down on my patio furniture, I am reminded of the sun on my face, the sand between my toes, and waves crashing on the shore. Now that’s a beach towel put to good use! CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT

Turkish cotton Fresco towels find renewed purpose as sumptuous slipcovers. Together at the photo shoot with editor-in-chief of bask, Amy Adams. When accessorizing your space, make it your own. When I couldn’t find the right color, I painted accents in a turquoise and metallic finish to complement the setting. After all, accessories are, like jewelry and a great pair of shoes are to an outfit, a must in any space.

Ambassador of COOL

Jay Jeffers just has a way with whimsy. Whether it’s dousing a ceiling in pigment-rich paint, or mixing kicky vintage accents with formal home fittings to achieve his trademark layered effect, the design-world virtuoso is a fearless arbiter of sophisticated, well-edited interiors with a jaunty sense of play. Now, with his newly released book from Rizzoli, Jay Jeffers: Collected Cool, and the perma-popup Cavalier@ Coup—a spinoff of his already wildly popular emporium, Cavalier— both in San Francisco, Jeffers adds to an already remarkable oeuvre of projects bearing his wildly creative imprint—among them a ground-up architectural collaboration with Shay Zak and a commission to create three sumptuous, bespoke homes at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Lake Tahoe. Jeffers credits “creativity and beauty” for fueling his singular aesthetic and informing the span-the-gamut undertakings he infuses with both. “One of my favorite things is to return to a project a year or more after I’ve finished with it and see people, families, living their everyday lives,” he says. “The home is a living, breathing entity.” JeffersDesignGroup.com

summertime social

On a beautiful evening in May, guests gathered at the stately seven-degrees for a private dinner hosted by bask Magazine publisher Jolie Adams. Greeting their arrivals were the sleek, eye-catching contour of two stunning vehicles on display: the 2014 California Ferrari in bianco avus with sport forged diamond rims and 2014 Maserati Granturismo with graphite alloy wheels and interior yellow stitching. After making their way up to the deck for cocktails, the group then mixed and mingled among South Coast Plaza models flaunting fashions from Intermix and jewelry by David Yurman while gazing at the sunset before heading to

the dining area, where tables adorned with earthy cream linens by Wildflower Linens featured place settings topped with darling takeaway pewter trays engraved with either “his” or “hers” etchings courtesy of PHDesign Interiors. Throughout the evening, delicate melodies from acoustic guitarist Jasmine Commerce serenaded guests, who, while reveling in laughter and easy, light-hearted conversation, enjoyed mouthwatering red wine braised short ribs with jumbo shrimp skewers over the most flavorful mushroom farro risotto, all prepared by chef Robert Villanueva. Our compliments to the chef!

speakeasy soirée Transporting guests back to the dizzy but dazzling Jazz Age, JDRF’s Dream Gala “Let’s Misbehave!” promised—and delivered—a night filled with laughter and entertainment. Indeed, the 500-plus attendees at the event, held March 29 at the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, mixed and mingled during a chic cocktail reception, relished a sumptuous dinner, and participated in silent and wine auctions, all while raising $1 million for Type 1 diabetes research. In true speakeasy fashion, guests danced the evening away to the vibrant beats of jazz-era classics

from premier big banders, the Legends of Swing. Most delightedly, event co-chairs Julie Hellmers, Eric Seedman and John Stoner honored Janet and Carl Nolet Jr., and Lara and Tom Giddings for their devotion to JDRF’s mission to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes, while guests reveled in the elegant evening’s finishing touch, a silent auction featuring exquisite bespoke items, including a ladies watch from Harry Winston, access to the New York Film Festival, and a premium package by Jaeger-LeCoultre. As always, JDRF produced an absolute dream of an evening.

crafted hors d’oeuvres. Art Stars event chairman and honorary emcee, Wayne Baglin, was more than pleased to present Laguna Beach High and Thurston Middle School Performing Art Director Mark Dressler with the Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award, while Cheryl Ekstrom received the inspiration grant for her proposal Broken/Unbroken/ Broken. Also shining particularly bright were other Art Star award winners: Joe Hanaur (Arts Patron of the Year); Rosemary Swimm (Arts Leadership Award); and Jodie Gates (Artist of the Year). The whole evening was, of course, truly illuminating.

wheels of fortune It was a night to remember as the Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts held its Spring Celebration: Bet on Wheels on April 12. Gathered at Hotel Irvine Jamboree Center were guests garbed in tailored suites and elegant cocktail dresses testing their luck at thrilling casino games, like blackjack, roulette and craps, while enjoying the harmonious sounds of Jet Set Quintet. Following the meal—a sumptuous selection of savories from Italian Trattoria, Asian Café, Gastro Pub, Sweet Shoppe

and Martini Lounge—was the Fund-A-Future live auction, which featured a most glamorous grand prize: a strand of lustrous freshwater pearls from Lugano Diamonds. Delighted guests also raised their glasses to honor Center Board Member Eve Ruffato and her husband, Mike, along with Lugano Diamonds owners, Moti and Idit Ferder. By evening’s end, the Guilds raised more than $250,000 to keep the wheels turning on efforts to bring Center performances to Orange County children.

black, white, ball! At CASA’s annual “Celebration of Children” Black & White Ball, held April 25 at The Island Hotel, Newport Beach, elegance abounded, as guests dressed in tuxes and stunning gowns indulged in a lavish cocktail reception followed by a magnificent dinner featuring fine fare. Prepping guests for the evening’s fabulous festivities, emcee Fred Port announced the event’s live auction, which featured many noteworthy items, among them a Deer Valley vacation and five-carat Ceylon Blue Sapphire stunner from Lugano Diamonds. Equally brilliant

was the evening’s youth speaker, Ty, who touched the hearts of the audience while passionately describing the impact of CASA on his life and dreams for the future. For their unwavering support and deep personal dedication to the cause, Lisa and Stephanie Argyros received CASA’s highest honor, the Children’s Champion award, while Larry Wilson was named Outstanding Advocate. After the awards, a sincerely spectacular after-party presented dessert, dancing, and mingling. A true celebration, indeed.

heartfelt affair As the sun set over the breathtaking Newport horizon on May 3, the Fairmont Newport Beach welcomed handsomely attired guests of Mercy House’s annual “Living with Heart” Gala. On the hotel’s exquisite orchid terrace, surrounded by flowers abloom for spring, the evening soirée began. Mingling galagoers enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before entering the grand ballroom for a splendid meal. Master of Ceremonies Bill Rogers, familiar as “ the voice of Disneyland” park announcer, kept audiences

entertained, while Mercy House beneficiary, Christina Brown, shared her story of homelessness and the organization’s life-transforming impact, adding a heartfelt and inspiring note to the program. Following dinner, guests enjoyed a decadent dessert bar in the magnificently lit Bamboo Garden while listening to the melodious sounds of producer, composer and musician Terry Wollman and acclaimed singer Melanie Taylor. As always, Mercy House opened its heart for a truly spectacular evening.

a guilded gala Inspired by the luxurious 1920s, CHOC Glass Slipper Guild’s Annual Gala was a celebration worthy of a grand Jazz-Age soirée. The 440 guests, who gathered at the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach on May 17, for an evening of elegance, entertainment and endowment, were greeted by a 1920s vintage Lincoln Zephyr convertible on display in the driveway before making their way to the grand ballroom for a lively cocktail reception and silent auction. Following the reception, a decadently draped tent adorned

with sparkling chandeliers illuminated to indulgence courtesy of a champagne bar, signature cocktails and delectable meal. During the program portion of the evening, Gala presidents Natalie Wackeen and Bobbie Garza honored and thanked CHOC doctors, the Foundation, and all of its patients and their families. And, in true speakeasy style, guests slipped into “The Back Room” for delightful bites of dessert, live music and a host of casino games for what can only be describes as a truly fine finish.
