bask publisher’s note | by jolie adams

While ensconced in the bustle and buzz of our fall photo shoot, I found myself taking a moment to look around, and I was struck by how far we’ve come in the past year. This is our anniversary issue, and I could not be more pleased with the strides we’ve made since our genesis just one year ago. Our photo shoot for this season encapsulates the theme of travel in this issue as we highlight the chicest travel wear for men and women, but more than that, to me, our photo shoot also captures the journey bask has taken thus far, and showcases the hard work of the wonderful team I’m so thankful to work with. Tony Florez, our fabulous fashion photographer, is just one of the people whose talent and dedication make bask what it is, and his work is encapsulated in the stunning photography you’ll see in this issue. Another exciting moment for bask this year occurred when we were fortunate enough to work with On Que Style’s Kirsten Prosser on our Summer photo shoot—which was highlighted on Good Day LA! We’re also expanding our distribution: no longer just in Southern California, you can now find bask all the way up in Napa Valley. And, speaking of travel, STAjets, in partnership with Lugano Diamonds, will now provide an iPad complete with bask’s new iPad app for each passenger. You can learn more about STAjets in our interview with the charming Kurt Belcher in our Men@Work section. This anniversary issue also ushers in two brand-new sections—Animal Lovers, one of my personal passions, highlights the best offerings, both near and far, for you and your furry friends. bask Planet brings you easy ways to help the environment by showcasing the most stylish and useful eco-friendly items on the market. In consideration of the tremendous experiences we’ve been a part of throughout the past year and in celebration of the one-year anniversary of bask, this is an issue of gratitude—to the incomparable team behind the magazine, and to you, our readers, for whom we do what we do, and without whom we would not be where we are. A million thanks for your continued support, and enjoy! Jolie Adams Publisher & Co-Founder jolie@baskmagazine.com

A tale of self-discovery and reflection—picture a chick flick on the stage.

shRek The MusiCaL Oct. 4 – 16 Yes, it’s Shrek all Ogre again, but this time as a musical, featuring 19 all-new songs, a not-so-fair maiden, a donkey that simply won’t shut up, a pissed-off cookie (yes, it’s true), and more. The somewhat romantic comedy/ fairytale Shrek the Musical ventures to Segerstrom Hall for 12 nights.

Blue Man Group Nov. 8 – 20 Chris Wink, Matt Goldman, and Phil Stanton, three street musicians from NYC, created what has become an international sensation— Blue Man Group, a trio of oddballs dressed in blue “skin.” Combining comedy, outstanding music (including their massive PVC pipe instruments), art, technology and mime (no, not the annoying Frenchtype), their shows are an “absolutely ecstatic experience,” raves USA Today. The group performs at Segerstrom Hall for 10 nights.

PST examines the years after World War II through the 1960s and ‘70s and showcases L.A. pop to post-minimalism; modernist architecture and design to multimedia installations; the films of the African-American L.A. rebellion to the feminist activities of the Woman’s Building; ceramics to Chicano performance art; and Japanese-American design to the pioneering work of artists’ collective. Project organizers are also conducting an extensive series of oral histories with many of Los Angeles’ key artists, filmmakers, curators, collectors, and critics. Institutions and local galleries participating in the exhibition are centered in the Greater Los Angeles area, but PST’s reach extends to San Diego, Orange County, Santa Barbara, and Palm Springs. The Getty Center serves as groundzero for many of the exhibitions and events, yet a host of opportunities to appreciate PST are also available at institutions all over Southern California; among them, please consider the following:

DESIGN*SPONGE AT HOME BY GRACE BONNEY With five sections chock-full of all things designrelated, from DIY projects to “Sneak Peeks” at others’ homes, it’s impossible to flip through this volume without finding something you’ll want to ogle over or even try yourself. Bonney has succeeded in expressing the charming and accessible feel of her website (where you can find countless more equally captivating ideas) in print, and the result is both absorbing and eminently useful; a rare combination.

3 2 DREAMS OF JOY: A NOVEL BY LISA SEE Picking up where her previous bestsellers left off, See continues to weave the tale of a troubled but powerful mother and daughter relationship complicated further by the emerging communism in China (their home country) that has enraptured Joy, the daughter and title character. The novel’s approach to the danger of the era and fierce familial bonds makes for an engrossing story to say the least.

LINDA MCCARTNEY: LIFE IN PHOTOGRAPHS As arguably the most significant photographer in the world of late 1960s music, McCartney’s work is ripe material for a definitive collection of all manner of exceptional rock ‘n’ roll moments, including live concerts and studio sessions with the likes of Janis Joplin and The Who, as well as spontaneous family portraits and other beautifully captured everyday moments. 4 THE GREATER JOURNEY: AMERICANS IN PARIS BY DAVID MCCULLOUGH “Not all pioneers went west,” says McCullough, and the influential Americans he portrays are a testament to just that. The experiences of these often understudied writers, doctors, painters, architects and more, in a bustling, sparkling city far more advanced than America at that time, are chronicled here. Step into the dazzling streets of Paris in the 19th century and join these ambitious Americans for the trip of a lifetime.

5 IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS BY ERIK LARSON The fascinating tale of America’s first ambassador to Nazi Germany and his family’s first year in Berlin, which coincided with Hitler’s first full year as chancellor. Larson deftly unravels this nonfiction saga, revealing an up-close look at the exuberance and suppressed menace of life in Nazi Berlin through the eyes of a mild-mannered history professor and his wildly flirtatious and enthusiastic 24-year-old daughter.

POSTSECRET: EXTRAORDINARY CONFESSIONS FROM ORDINARY LIVES BY FRANK WARREN Stunning postcards are one thing, but those handcrafted and etched with strangers’ secrets are quite another. What began as simply Warren’s idea for a community art project has since led to untold numbers of postcards, which Warren continues to receive, that divulge intensely emotional and relatable confessions. He has compiled a select variety into this compelling tome that is at once heartbreaking, inspiring, silly, and ultimately addicting.

DOG SENSE BY JOHN BRADSHAW If you’ve ever considered a furry friend as near to your heart as any other family member, you’ll want to check out this renowned anthrozoologist’s earnest guide to returning the love dogs give us on a daily basis. Bradshaw examines widespread misconceptions about dogs and their behavior, and shares helpful techniques to combat the damage even the most loving dog-owners often incur on their dogs.

Brentwood Country Mart

Casual meets chic in this historic Country Mart 225 26th Street Los Angeles, CA 90402

Pippa Small

The name “country mart” can be deceiving. Or not, if you’ve ever been to someone’s ridiculously well-appointed “country house” where everything from the hand towels to the honey is somehow tasteful, simple, and luxuriously divine, all at the same time. Originally opened in 1948, the Brentwood Country Mart was intended to be the west side version of Los Angeles’s famed Farmers Market on Fairfax and Third. It quickly became a favorite haunt of Hollywood stars such as Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor and Burt Lancaster. Today, the original red-board structure still exists, as does the cozy design, with shops and stalls arranged around a central courtyard. There are 29 fun and fabulous stores and eateries – it boasts the best rotisserie chicken and fries in LA (Reddi Chick) and some of the most stylish indie boutiques in the area. If you need a shoe repair and barber shop, they’ve got that too. Plus, every Sunday, pony rides and a petting zoo can be found from 9am-2pm.

fresh food for fresh skin Shopping for groceries has never sounded so good. Those in Orange County can now feed their skin with a stop at the “market,” or rather, skin boutique, located at The Irvine Spectrum. Think everything from kiwi masks and wild berry gel to banana concealer and black bean eyeliner. You can even drink in some peach sake, brandy toners, Korean liqueurs and beer bubble cleansers for your skin. SKINFOOD is not your average floral and herbal line of skin goods. It’s all made from varying types of foods from around the world, including avocado, carrots, rice, cashews and caviar. With over 750 stores in a dozen countries, SKINFOOD’s wild popularity has finally spread to the U.S. Crafted with the look of a European deli market, the first American store was hand designed by artisans who came from Korea to give it a fresh and friendly appeal. SKINFOOD is Asian-influenced, but their products are created for all skin types. You’ll find eclectic, trendy, mostly all-natural (though not 100% certified organic) products with classic skin care roots. The line pairs common ingredients, such as cucumber and grapes, with hard-to-find ingredients including Inca Omega nuts from Brazil, organic carrots from the Jeju Island, black raspberries from Gochang, Korea and Russian caviar.

40

The full beauty menu includes skin care, color cosmetics, body care and hair care, as well as a men’s line—some made with cognac and packaged with the look of brandy bottles (they know their audience). With such whimsical touches, it seems they’ve thought of everything, such as body oils that need to be shaken like salad dressing before use. You may feel a bit overwhelmed by the wealth of choices, but fear not. You can always whet your appetite with a few favorite bites, then come back for more. To start, the top bestseller is their famed Rice Mask. It’s whipped with the texture of ground rice and promises to brighten and whiten the skin. The Black Sugar Mask is made of black sugar from Brazil (the purest unbleached form of sugar) to moisturize and exfoliate. And their uber-famous Coffee Body Scrub is all the rage – caffeine is the key here with coffee beans that help firm and remove cellulite. For makeup goods, they offer an outstanding lip stain combined with lip balm to soften and stay (versus those we’ve all tried that dry and crack).

All the goods in the store have a very lightweight texture versus heavy chemical lines that can provoke sensitivity in skin. Fall SKINFOOD trends to seek out? Replenish your summer-sunned skin with their hydrating grape seed oil and avocado lines. The Cashew Nut Cream Body Mask with peanut butter is a recommended fall body scrub (with a scrub and mask all in one). For nails, go neutral in the Milk Creamy Coconut. What can you expect this trip to the “market” to cost? An extremely reasonable $17-$60 for skin care and just $5-$30 for cosmetics. As far as the results? Be patient. Their goal isn’t the quick fix of many heavy chemical results, but rather a long-term goal of natural, smooth, glowing beauty. TheSkinFoodUS.com

SuStainable + Being kind to the earth without sacrificing style is a tricky, and sometimes seemingly impossible, line to tread. Luckily, many designers, both high profile and under the radar, are shifting their focuses to environmental friendliness, which means more readily available items that are visually appealing, useful, and made with the earth’s best interests at heart. We’ve highlighted a number of our favorite products that fit this bill, from lovely stationary with an added bonus to practical and elegant home goods, so that you don’t have to choose between the good things in life and the good of the natural world.

Patagonia

the renowned outdoor clothing and gear company has recently kicked their passion for environmentalism up a notch. One of their most admirable new programs is the Common threads initiative, which aims to keep clothes from ever ending up in landfills by making, buying, and using clothes sustainably, and ultimately making new clothes out of old. though Patagonia continues to strive for more eco-friendly production processes, they also call on the customers to select clothes that they will want to wear indefinitely. this classic nano Puff Pullover is just such a piece; made from recycled soda bottles and worn out garments, and recyclable through Common threads, you’ll treasure this piece for years to come. Patagonia.com

Green Field Paper

Wouldn’t it be nice to send flowers along with every thank you card or note you mail? Green Field Paper has innovated a way to do just that: these Grow-a-note cards contain wildflower seeds and can be torn up and planted (each comes with easy instructions) after reading the message, thus allowing a beautiful bouquet to bloom. they come in a myriad of winsome designs for everything from holiday greetings, birthday cards and thank you notes, matching recycled envelopes are included, and they’re crafted from tree free paper handmade in San Diego. GreenFieldPaper.com

Bambeco

With a name that combines bamboo (the world’s most renewable resource) and ecology (the relationship between people and the planet), bambeco is just as committed to sustainability as style. the online store stocks all manner of beautiful and practical home and outdoor items made from organic, biodegradable, renewable or recyclable materials, making it possible to decorate with luxurious goods without harming the natural world. this stunning glassware is made from extremely durable, 100% recycled hand-blown glass, and will add an elegant pop of color to any place setting. Bambeco.com

Oak Leaf Vineyards

these award-winning (and astoundingly inexpensive) wines are known not only for their outstanding taste, but also for the vineyard’s involvement with better Wines, better World. this conglomerate of wines is committed to eco-friendly packaging, as wine bottles are some of the most notoriously environmentally harmful materials. Oak leaf employs eco-Glass to encase their wines, which is made with 25% less glass than typical wine bottles, reducing not only the materials in the bottle itself, but also the fuel emissions caused by transporting the bottles as they weigh significantly less, leading to an overall more ecologically conscious design without losing any of the quality. Beth Springer

Handmade in Venice, CA, these bags are functional, beautiful and eco-friendly. Beth Springer endeavors to design her bags so as to use every leather remnant, even trimming some bags with found leather to repurpose bits that would otherwise go to a landfill. The line takes every aspect of environmental impact seriously, down to attaching the recycled-paper-and-soy-ink tags to the bags with organic hemp. This messenger bag is made of plant-dyed Italian leather and waxed canvas that is designed to look even better with use, and trimmed with antique brass and copper hardware. BethSpringer.com

Tiffany & Co.

As a company that looks to the beauty of the natural world for design inspiration, Tiffany & Co is just as concerned with maintaining that beauty as molding it into exquisite jewelry. By using mines that are committed to preventing air, water and soil contamination and even obtaining most of its precious metals from a single U.S. mine dedicated to high levels of environmental and social responsibility, Tiffany & Co creates pieces that are as eco-friendly as they are lovely—such as this watch, crafted from gold that meets these standards. Tiffany.com

Crate & Barrel

Decorating with ecologically conscious items does not just benefit the planet; it also allows you to ornament your home with one-of-a-kind creations. This stunning mirror is made of reclaimed peroba wood, a rare commodity due to its previous exploitation. By using parts of this wood that would otherwise be wasted, Crate & Barrel presents a look that is not only hard to find, but unique as the process of reclaiming the wood and shaping it into an aesthetically pleasing piece means that no two are exactly alike. CrateAndBarrel.com

Gap

Denim production can be incredibly damaging to water if not carried out responsibly, and Gap wants to be sure that their denim avoids this trap. To that end, Gap uses a Clean Water Program to ensure that wastewater polluted with the chemicals and dyes used in denim production meets strict guidelines and is not deposited into streams and rivers relied on by local communities. Gap also introduced the “Recycle Your Blues campaign, which has repurposed over 270,000 units of denim into fiber insulation for over 540 houses this year alone. By using environmentally sound production processes and providing an outlet for worn out items, Gap has made these wide-leg trouser jeans chic from start to finish. Gap.com 46

When it comes to travel, many of us are faced with the problem of what to do with our fourlegged friends while we’re away. Doggie Camp? Pet sitter? This time, consider taking your pooch along! Thanks to new pet-friendly programs at many four and five star hotels, you’ll find lots of options. For the ultimate holiday with your hound, check out these fabulous pet-friendly cities with our favorite spots to eat, play and sleep.

[MiaMi, FL] Stay at the Mandarin Oriental, and sign your dog up for the hotel’s doggie boot camp while you relax poolside with a Cuba Libre. Later, let your pooch run free at Pine Tree Park, a six-acre oasis in the heart of Miami Beach. There are tons of great parks, but we like Red Bud Isle, which boasts beautiful wooded areas with wide, open spaces for dogs to run and play, as well as several spots for them to take a dip in the water. For more fun with your fluffy friend, there’s the Barton Creek Farmers’ Market, a number of walking tours that allow pets, and tons of outdoor eateries, like the funky LaBoite Café. Staying Fit for the Season Did you know that the average American gains up to ten pounds each holiday season? Conversely, did you also know that skipping meals is a major contributor to this weight gain? The worry of falling into this trap is a major reason why the initial excitement of a holiday party is always followed by a certain amount of anxiety; the inevitable and all-too-tempting treats are seemingly unavoidable during the holidays. Luckily, there are ways to navigate the health dangers of the season that are as simple as eating smaller portions of every meal to keep your metabolism up and making every workout as efficient as possible. To that end, bask chatted with the Fitness Manager of The Sports Club/LA’s Irvine location, Laura Calleia, about the best ways to avoid the hazards of the season and enact damage control after you realize you may have had one hors d’oeuvre too many.

b: What are the most common pitfalls of the holiday season and how can they be avoided? LC: Overeating and overindulging, definitely. If you’re going to a party, and you know there will be cheese plates, appetizers, and more, eat your dinner before you go to the party. What happens is, people go to these parties really hungry, and end up eating all these things they shouldn’t be eating; so just eat a normal dinner before you go, and you don’t run the risk as much. b: If we’ve already overindulged, what’s the best way to get back on track? LC: Get back on your fitness routine – take a day where you’re eating really healthy, eating greens and drinking green drinks. If you’ve overindulged, your body is very acidic. So you want to flush out your system for a couple of days.

56

b: How can we have fun and enjoy holiday parties without going overboard? LC: Have a great time, but remember that a little bit here and there adds up. Enjoy yourself, but eat smaller portions – eat everything that’s there, but eat a small portion of it. b: How can you fit working out into an already packed day? LC: Working with a trainer is great, because it’s mindless. If you can get one really good workout with a trainer in and one class a week, then you can do a little maintenance at home on the other days of the week. The best classes to take are anything that does your whole body, any functional class. Body sculpt and body pump are kind of the hit classes of today. Any class that does a full body workout and combines cardio is going to give you the lean look that

everyone’s going for these days. If you’re really pressed for time, do fifteen-minute intervals of cardio and fifteen on a circuit, and that’s a great workout. b: What are some tips for workout regimens to do at home to save time this holiday season? LC: Take 15 minutes, and just say for the next 15 minutes, I’m going to work out. Take one-minute intervals of pushups for one minute, sit-ups for one minute, do dips on a chair, and use weights at home for biceps. Keep your heart rate up, and that’s a great workout for the day. Keep these tips in mind when the holidays roll around this year, and you’ll be able to avoid the dread and embrace the season like never before. A Southwest Portrait Stepping out of the slightly cramped regional jet from Los Angeles onto the tarmac of the Santa Fe airport, I am immediately struck by the dryness of the environment, the ongoing breeze tinted with a light touch of piñon pine scent, and a certain lack of oxygen. Thirst is a constant here, and for the first time in years, I am using lip balm. At nearly 7,300 feet above sea level, Santa Fe, or “The City Different” as locals refer to it, is both the oldest and the highest capital city in North America. And with a topography comprised of rivers, mesas, mountains and high desert, it is impossible to visit this place and not be struck by the alien beauty of Santa Fe’s landscape. This feeling of unfamiliarity is amplified by the cityscape itself, as its wholly unique construction creates an otherworldly impression of stepping back in time. Rectangular, pueblo-style buildings dominate the view, and the few structures that contrast the theme shock the eye in their dissimilitude. The mental image I had carried of this place, of a city surrounded by sand dunes and blistering heat, is gone. This place is no Phoenix nor, as I am to discover, is it akin to anything I have experienced in the Southwest before. Into this glorious visual palette fits the four-star Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi, my host for this three-day tour of Santa Fe. Although it was built in the latter end of the 20th Century, the Inn has an ancient appearance with a design style reflecting the cliff dwellings of the mysterious forerunners of the local Indian tribes, the Anasazi. Little is known of the society of these “Ancient Ones” as they are called by the Pueblo Indians, but their people are lauded for their cities in the cliffs, which integrated harmoniously into the nature of their surroundings.

62

www.baskmagazine.com

Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi’s invitation to spend a few days exploring Santa Fe became a lesson in the power of the ancient city’s magic & allure And the Inn follows these design cues flawlessly, with a sandstone facade and earth-toned walls. This is no color-by-numbers approach that can be found in mass-produced tract homes in Palm Springs; the exterior is heavy with a purity of legitimacy. The interior of the hotel complements the exterior in its homage to the Southwestern spirit, as well as in its impressive sense of up-market art. In the public areas alone, I find high quality original artwork adorning the walls, antique Indian rugs hugging hardwood floors, and motifs of local petroglyphs throughout the Inn. The fine art is a surprise at first, until I discover that Santa Fe is the second largest upscale art market in the United States behind New York City. The art culture of this epicenter of creativity soaks into the fabric of everything downtown, I discover within moments of walking out the front door of the Inn, as there are galleries and museums seemingly everywhere, many of which are dedicated to particular ethnicities and perspectives. Santa Fe is an almost-proprietary blend of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences, and the Inn of the Anasazi faithfully honors the spirit of the region in ways that are both symbolic and utilitarian. From rough-hewn tables and banquettes of authentic Chimayo textiles in the restaurant dining rooms to the ornately carved doors leading into a library loaded with texts exploring the lore of the Southwest, no working detail has been ignored in the aesthetic. While the lobby and public areas are undoubtedly intriguing, my curiosity is truly piqued when handed the room key cards. After all, I reckon, with the attention to detail and pursuit of authenticity inherent everywhere so far, the guestrooms are bound to be stunning. And upon opening my room door, I am overwhelmed. The room is a feast for the eyes, the offspring of luxurious living and Southwestern style. Before settling in on individual elements, the comprehensive sense thrust upon me is a somewhat incongruous marriage of glorious opulence and homespun honesty. Every item in the living room contributes to the gestalt with a subtlety that sings to the creative artist in my soul. Locally sourced wrought iron lamps and stone-top tables and sidebars provide a sense of solidity and permanence. The ceiling, with its vigas (unfinished aspen ceiling beams) and herring-boned latillas (short, cylindrical sticks set perpendicular to a viga), imparts a cozy quality that draws me in. In this area known for its cold winters and temperate summers, the kiva fireplace looks well used

and intimate. The hand-carved four-poster bed is an over-stuffed pillowtop mattress dressed with Rivolta linens. Were I not on a tour of the area following a set itinerary, I would be tempted to sprawl out on the bed and enjoy a comfortable fire. From the front door of the Inn, I cross the historic town square, where the old government building, the headquarters for the state’s largest bank and the main offices of the state’s most influential law firm make up three sides of the rectangle. As my tour guide Peter Weiss goes on to explain, this rather convenient arrangement led to significant cronyism during the frontier days, and one of the consequences of the resulting clean up was a sense of political ambiguity in the community. Since 1983, the electorate has voted members of both parties to the top state position in alternating fashion. And, New Mexicans have high expectations from their elected officials, regardless of political leanings. Even beyond politics and governance, New Mexico is a true outlier in American society. The primary language spoken here is Spanish. The social hierarchy here is Indian (Native American is not a term used here), then Hispanics, and then Whites. A highly transitory populace where the average time of residence is six years, many newcomers arrive to reinvent themselves. The trend of rediscovery finds its roots in the Indian tribes that surrounded the area. A matriarchal society, property and family names were passed down through women.

bask beyond | santa fe As other peoples settled into the region, women discovered a freedom of commerce unavailable in other parts of America. Today, the fruition of this attitude on the part of the founding society in the area results in higher percentages of female-owned businesses, and Santa Fe is teeming with confident and successful businesswomen. Peter explains all of this while we enjoy an incredible lunch at the Coyote Cantina, a balcony restaurant overlooking the narrow and foot-traffic heavy streets of downtown. In addition to being a world traveler, historian, and long-time Santa Fe resident, his face is a familiar one to Travel Channel and History Channel viewers, as he is a true student of human history and constantly seeks out more information about the places where he stays and the people he meets along the way. It was at his insistence that we start off at this particular spot, and it becomes immediately clear he’s familiar with great dining as well. This isn’t a “foodie” trip, but this place delivers. From the Cantina, Peter leads a tour of the city, including walking through downtown, driving through neighborhoods on the outskirts of the downtown area, and even a stop at the Catholic cathedral. Themes of spiritualism and religion seep through every aspect of the city. He mentions that Santa Fe has become a place of pilgrimage of sorts for the New Age crowd, and I in no way find it odd. The place is redolent with mysticism. There is a quiet here, a tranquility that settles on the soul that can be found on mountaintops or at sea during a calm sunrise. Walking through the cloister-like town square back to the Inn of the Anasazi, the city appears to be deeply layered, and I feel that I have just tapped the surface. The morning after an outstanding dinner in the Anasazi Restaurant, I find myself back at the airport, being prepped for a “Santa Fe Sortie” through Southwest Safaris. For the next hour, I will be strapped into the copilot chair of a six-seat Cessna as the plane circles Santa Fe and adjacent areas. Although in operation since 1974, Southwest Safaris’ owner Bruce Adams retains the infectious moxie of a high school cheerleader. His frenetic energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and I find myself unconsciously bouncing up and down in my seat in anticipation.

“The solemnity of Santa Fe and its innate blend of the ancient and the new, of antiquity and reinvention is almost palpable at night, when the peaceful silence of the evening hours and the quiet calm of dusty back roads is almost a flavor in my mouth.” The plane taxis down the runway, and in no time, we are airborne. Bruce takes us over mesas, broken country, rivers and mountains. This collage of geography creates a mixed bag of updrafts, gusts and low-pressure areas, and I understand why this type of flying is often referred to as “jeeping.” Not for the faint of heart, or weak of stomach, the bouncing and jostling over the course of the hour never truly settles; rather, the occupants simply become accustomed to it. Other than the occasional sensation of an unexpected three-story elevator drop, the flight is amazing. The visibility is clear, the aircraft is roughly 1500 feet off the ground, and the views are simply spectacular. Bruce, much like Peter Weiss, is encyclopedic in his knowledge of the area and its history. Pointing out geological formations and ancient trails with equal aplomb, our pilot often turns in his seat to highlight a certain location, structure, or natural point of interest. With his penchant for flying in this chop hands-free while using the foot pedals and his oversized, yet fully capable demeanor, I secretly nickname him “Wildman” Bruce Adams, and I imagine he secretly gets a kick out of it. For a post-flight treat, I head off to the Thousand Waves Resort & Spa. Just a few miles outside of town driving into the mountains towards Taos, the spa is one of the few onsen-styled bathhouses in Southwest.

Guest room at the Rosewood

Downtown Santa Fe

The pre-bath massage was perfect, as the management saw my athletic frame coming and ensured that their strongest massage therapist, Eagle, was working on my back. Afterwards, I slipped into something even more comfortable and slid into the 105-degree communal bath. While everything else on this Santa Fe trip would prove to be memorable for good reason, the onsen element is a bit disappointing. While all guests are invited to enjoy the spas in the bare, there are actually two, one for any and all guests and one dedicated solely to women. So it is after a half hour of sitting in hot water with a group of naked men studiously avoiding eye contact with one another that I make my way back to town. This afternoon promises to be a true highlight. The good folks at the Inn of the Anasazi have partnered with Broken Saddle Riding Company for a dusk horseback ride into the hills where we will catch the sunset off the horizon of the distant Rocky Mountains. The drive out to their headquarters in Cerrillos is a good half hour northeast of downtown Santa Fe, and upon arrival, the combined smell of desert plants, piñon pine, and hay dust is thick. Like the briny smell of a wet September morning on the docks, it appeals to the masculine wayfarer in a man. My excitement level is peaking at the moment. Up until now, I have been unaware that the horse I will be riding to the viewing destination is a Tennessee Walker, renowned for the smoothest gait in the equestrian world. The breed is gaited so that their trot feels like a prance, and their prance, like a moving sidewalk at the airport. The stories I have heard in my years around horses have spawned a near-mythical appreciation for the breed, and it feels like too long before the owners select Roscoe, one of the older and more assertive geldings for me. The moment my tailbone hits the saddle, the horse senses my desire for the trail and he heads towards the corral exit. I try turning him with my knees alone, and he responds by turning on a quarter and leaving me fifteen cents in change. Truly, this is a magnificent breed.

Over the next hour and a half, the Broken Saddle guides meander through the chaparral, cacti and deserted mine shafts on our way up the steep hillside. This last hazard is particularly chilling as I envision returning late at night and taking a wrong turn, only to take a long drop with a disturbingly sudden stop. When we finally summit, the sun is just nestling into the peaks of the distant Rockies. The surrounding hilltop is ablaze in amber and gold, and I have to admit, I get a little dusty-eyed admiring the Great Architect’s grand works from the back of one of mankind’s oldest partners, in this place of ancient mysteries, spiritual subtleties and historical anomalies. The trip back to the corrals is too short, and I barely remember trotting on our way home. In fact, the rest of this evening, while fun for its conviviality as I find myself surrounded by a group of fellow visitors that wends its way through the nightlife of Santa Fe, feels somewhat short of the day’s more soul-stirring promise. At one point, I break away and wander the quiet streets of the downtown—one of my preferred activities late at night in a new city. My experience has shown in the past that a city’s most honest character comes out in the evening hours, and yet here, there is no difference in the vibe, the feel, or the spirit of the city despite the hour. The solemnity of Santa Fe and its innate blend of the ancient and the new, of antiquity and reinvention is almost palpable at night, when the peaceful silence of the evening hours and the quiet calm of dusty back roads is almost a flavor in my mouth. This place deserves the title, “The City Different.” The morning comes too soon. For the third time in as many days, I am back in the Santa Fe airport, with its signature square pueblo appearance and constant winds. I feel both a little spoiled and a little cheated. Like everything else in Santa Fe, the contradiction feels appropriate. While my preference is for another three weeks in this place, I know I am fortunate for the experiences of the last three days. This is a place for lovers, adventurers, and pilgrims, and I am lucky to have felt it all.

You can hardly go anywhere in Napa Valley, California without being surrounded by hillsides dripping with grapes on the vine. This small town, famously known for not only being a Mecca of winemakers, but also home to the Culinary Institute of America, is a land unique unto itself. Full of warmth, beauty and natural adventure: welcome to Calistoga Ranch, a multifaceted destination offering more than just a trip to the vineyards. It’s a getaway for families and friends, luxury seekers, spa lovers and busy duos looking to get off the grid. www.baskmagazine.com

If you’ve never been to Calistoga Ranch, imagine a private bungalow tucked in a canyon surrounded by ancient oak trees, lakes and rock-hewn streams. Located in Upper Napa Valley less than a two-hour drive from downtown San Francisco, you’ll find this property is as unique as its surroundings. Picturesque cedar-shingled lodges, constructed of rustic natural materials, are comprised of free standing rooms connected by decks trellised by walkways, which all combines to make this expansive indoor/outdoor destination a relaxing and majestic escape. Open in 2004, Calistoga is managed by Auberge (who also manages Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley), one of the world’s premiere resort companies. Keeping with the Auberge tradition of elegance, each lodge was created to take advantage of its natural surroundings, preserving the whole “bungalow in the woods” experience. Whether you’re in a one-bedroom or deluxe lodge, each is designed with floor-to-ceiling windows, bringing every bit of the natural outdoors into each room. The warm contemporary interiors further complement the earthy environment with the use of rich polished woods and vegetable hues. If that isn’t enough to get you feeling like one with nature, pamper yourself with Calistoga Ranch’s own line of bay laurel and eucalyptus scented botanically pure body products in the outdoor bath garden where you can shower under a canopy of trees, an experience that is truly the crowning jewel of the lodges. And if the grapes aren’t the only ones who love the sun, there’s more than enough to keep you busy outside. Calistoga offers a myriad of complimentary wellness activities to its guests that incorporate both physical and spiritual aspects, including soothing classes such as poetry, meditation and yoga, as well as biking and hiking in the redwoods near Ritchey Creek and BotheNapa State Park. Or stay close by and take advantage of Calistoga’s 147 acres that are dedicated to nature and hike one of the trailheads on property, then take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the vineyard and Mayacama Mountains. Whatever you decide, the view is sure to be unforgettable. After a long day outside, or if your day has just begun, pamper yourself at The Bathhouse, one of Calistoga’s old legacies as a place for healing mineral

waters. A natural mineral pool, outdoor showers and private soaking tubs induce a state of calmness, while the laundry list of treatments indigenous to the region, including milk and honey body wraps and lavender milk baths add to the tranquil experience. No matter which you choose from Calistoga’s unique selection of treatments, you’re in for a truly relaxing experience. Though there are several worthwhile dining landmarks downtown, you’ll find that dining at The Lakehouse will fulfill all your desires for a true Napa experience. With panoramic views overlooking the spring-fed Lake Lommel, The Lakehouse makes good use of what Napa Valley is legendary for by using the finest organic ingredients from local farmers. On the other hand, if you simply can’t muster the energy to leave your comfortable abode but don’t want to miss a meal, arrange to have a private chef prepare something for an evening in, allowing you to relax comfortably and replenish your energy with a well-deserved meal. More residence than resort, an extraordinary property like this wouldn’t make sense without its own vineyard—and wine cave. The sprawling vineyards that begin at the Ranch entrance welcoming visitors make sense, but the wine cave at the top of the property makes for a complete surprise. At first glance, the cave entrance seems veiled by rocks and landscape cascading around it. But beyond the entrance doors are 3800 square feet of coolness. Not surprising, the cave isn’t just a place to store wine, but also a one-of-a-kind venue for events and weddings. One of Calistoga’s most anticipated occasions is the Annual Blending Party, a signature event of the year and the signal of the “crush” season, where guests get to blend their own vintage with a top Napa Valley vintner in the wine cave, after which the winner is announced at a multi-course Napa-style dinner following the blending. Blends are judged by renowned vintners and winemakers, Nils and Kirk Venge, and everyone leaves with two magnums of their very own blend with their own personally designed label. It’s quite the competitive event amongst native blenders, although admirably tasteful. All told, Calistoga is a place of elegance, a place to unwind and nurture your senses, and the perfect backdrop for a fall getaway.

Spectacular beaches, medieval architecture, historic cities and first class flavors—the delightful country of Croatia is emerging as one of Europe’s most stunning escapes. Check In Croatia, a member of the former Yugoslavia, boasts beautiful terrain, compassionate people, and rich culture, yet is scarred with a turbulent history. The country has endured varied tragedies for centuries, from a devastating earthquake in 1667 which pummeled the city of Dubrovnik, nearly destroying the entire area and killing 5,000 people, to more recently being the victim of warfare from neighboring Serbian and Montenegran troops in the early 1990s. With true heart, the people of this small country remained hopeful about the future, and proud of their heritage. Luckily, due to extensive restoration, today visitors are still able to connect with the authenticity of the ancient civilization. Despite the country’s ideal position and its moderate Mediterranean climate, tourism has only recently grown within the past five years, and finally people are exploring the wonders of this delightful country. A longtime favorite of dignitaries and royalty, the Dalmatian Coast features a lingering shoreline cozied up against sheer limestone mountains and lively towns filled with adventure, relaxation and a glimpse of eclectic history; here we share some highlights.

Poolside at Grand Villa Argentina – Dubrovnik

www.baskmagazine.com

In Southern Dalmatia, just outside the Old City walls of Dubrovnik, Grand Villa Argentina was once a modest boutique hotel, but now guests will find a five-star, luxe seaside complex consisting of five equally appealing accommodations—Hotel Argentina, Villa Argentina, Villa Orsula, Villa Glavićand Villa Sheherezade. Whether at the pool resting along the rocks or at the terrace restaurants, visitors can unwind and relax to the glittering views of the island Lokrum and the Old City walls shining in the forefront. Why not enjoy the modish European destination in five-star sophistication? In the idyllic location along the Central Dalmatian coast, Le Meridien Lav Split is a true star—it has been awarded the Leading Croatian Hotel and the Leading Croatian Spa Hotel. Befitting its designation, the expansive seaside property is equipped for fun and tranquility with indoor and outdoor pools, a holistic spa complete with Roman Steam Bath, an award winning casino and a champagne bar.

Gil’s Cuisine & Pop Lounge

Gastronomy & Libations For seafood lovers a trip to Croatia is not complete without a visit to Mali Ston, or “Little Ston,” which lies on the Pelješac Peninsula, just north of Dubrovnik. Enjoy lunch at Kapetanovva Kuca where an array of shellfish are plucked straight from the beds offshore adjacent Malostonski Channel and freshly grilled fish are bound to whet the appetite of even the pickiest eaters. At sunset the pristine Adriatic panorama can be treasured at Buža, a completely open air bar which rests on the rocks right outside the southern Old City walls of Dubrovnik. A popular stop for Dubrovnik farers is an evening spent dining at Gil’s Cuisine & Pop Lounge. The creative French-Fusion menu is divine, and the meat and pasta dishes are cooked to perfection and are highlighted by impressive views of the Old City.

Embark & Explore From graceful landscapes to antiquated art and architecture, culture buffs can savor Croatia’s stately heritage by visiting any of the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. An oasis of lush landscape and streaming waterfalls await sightseers at the pristine Plitvice Lakes. At the other end of the spectrum, Diocletian’s Palace in Split is buzzing with tourists and has an array of things to do and see. First built as the retirement home for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, the palatial area now houses a vibrant center bustling with subterranean chambers, a cathedral, a bell tower, restaurants, jewelry shops and gelatarias within the ancient imperial structure. Croatia is recognized as “the country of a thousand islands;” to be exact, the tally is 1,244! While not all of the islands are inhabited, each uniquely complements the picturesque backdrop of the Adriatic Sea. To fully embrace the splendor of the Adriatic, set sail and cruise throughout the island-spotted sea. Ferries and hydrofoils operate daily, or you can charter a sailboat if you prefer. Enjoy the famous sheep’s cheese of the island Pag, bathe in the shimmering azure waters of the country’s most popular beach Zlatni Rat on Brač, or soak in the sun and aromatic lavender fields of Hvar.

An Ode to Tranquility For a truly unique experience, escape the ordinary and stay in one of the eleven historic stone lighthouses strewn among secluded islands. Plocica Lighthouse, built in 1887, offers simple apartments at low rates with accommodations for a maximum of 14 people. Ideal for living out those deserted island dreams.

President of STAjets, headquartered at John Wayne Airport, Kurt Belcher sat his company’s aircraft management services and his

bask: How did you find your passion for aviation? Kurt Belcher: My passion for aviation came when I was just out of high school and I was in a punk rock band. My best friend growing up, now Air Force F-16 pilot Capt. Donald Davenport who is returning from Iraq, was just gung-ho aviation. He was working on his instrument rating at the time, and we were flying together up to Santa Barbara for a Social Distortion concert and he let me fly. I was instantly hooked. I changed my education plans, went to EmbryRiddle Aviation University, [and] while I was there I got my business degree in aviation

92

business administration; my major was airline management and my minor was airport planning and design. Coming out, I was a flight instructor here at John Wayne, a charter pilot and then got into international aircraft sales and management. It was something I had a genuine aptitude for. Then I got into the development side, private hangars and the like. I built an airport in Mexico and that spun into quite a few international opportunities on the development side. Then the STAjets opportunity came up. b: How did you come to be president of STAjets? KB: STAjets has been around for nine years, and we purchased the company in

February ‘09. We saw in STAjets a very good opportunity in that the phones were ringing, there were aircrafts for use, and the company had a solid reputation. And, with my education and experience, it felt as close [to] a ‘sure thing’ as one can get. At the time that we bought the company, there was one jet available for charter, and we quickly raised that number to 11. While numbers have fluctuated with the economy’s spikes and dips, we anticipate getting back up to eight soon. Because we don’t own the planes, but rather offer management of and chartering services for private- and corporate-owned aircrafts, our numbers

down with bask to discuss the benefits of private flying, vision of the future of the aviation industry. occasionally vary. Fortunately, we have a long list of available crafts for our passengers, so speed of service is never a challenge for us. b: In what ways does STAjets differentiate itself from other private charter flight companies? KB: It doesn’t take long to figure out that we as charter companies all offer the same thing. There are only two places to train as pilots: Flight Safety and Simuflite. And we all, in the industry, go to both. With that being said, where we differ is our level of service. We want to be known for our response times. When you call into STAjets, someone is almost always going to answer the phone. If, for whatever reason they don’t, you’ll get a call back within minutes. Always. In this industry, it is all about timeliness. After all, people fly private so that they don’t have to deal with the TSA, so they can protect their time, and so they can maximize their productivity. We give the gift of time; we’re basically a ‘time machine.’ b: What are the things that leadership (company management) does to enhance, or protect the STAjets brand promise? KB: I oversee the entire process and procedure of our operations. My partner, Steve Gallup, has been on this field for 40+ years. He’s worked with every major operator on this field. He’s seen it all. He trains all of our pilots to conduct themselves a certain way, to dress a certain way, and to keep the aircraft a certain way. I provide a vision and direction; he makes it happen. Top down, we have layers in place in order to ensure quality. For example, the copilot is in charge of the plane, and if he’s not doing it, then the pilot’s responsible. And if the pilots aren’t getting it done, then it’s the Chief Pilot’s responsibility. But it’s not a hierarchy where everyone works under someone; we all work together. I think that’s another thing that separates us from other companies. You can ask any employee here how they like their job and they’ll tell you they love it. We trust each other to be professionals and to do what’s necessary to get the job done. I mean, I’ll go out and wash an airplane if that’s what

needs to be done. Top down, we’re a very dynamic company. b: What kind of advance notice is required for flights? KB: We prefer 24-hour notice. We can still handle 6-hour notice. And our planes that are based in Orange County? For a call out of Orange County? Realistically, we have the ability to launch a plane within two hours. What we can absolutely guarantee is 12 hours. b: What are the plans for the future? Additional airports? More aircraft and pilots? What will be your focus leading your company into the future? KB: We have a jet card program we’re launching where cardholders can get discount rates through us. It will also involve special rates with select high-end hotels and restaurants around Southern California. It also functions as a debit/credit card where every time you fly, we put money on that card. So, after two months of flying you could have enough on that card that you could take your family out to a very nice dinner.

Pilatus PC-12 Max Cruise Speed // 322 mph Max Operating Altitude // 30,000 ft Cabin Altitude at 26,000 ft // 8,000 ft Rate of climb (MTOW) // 1,920 ft/min Max ramp weight // 10,495 lbs

Hailed as one of the most versatile planes on the planet, the Pilatus PC-12 is, in Kurt Belcher’s words, “an eco-friendly Suburban with a wing on it.” The PC-12 combines

Additionally we are taking a ‘green’ approach to flying with two other products we offer. Probably our most exciting product that we are introducing is the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft. It’s the world’s most economical corporate aircraft. I can’t say enough good things about this aircraft. We joined forces with TerraPass, which enables you to offset your carbon footprint. In Europe, there are carbon footprint taxes. Here, with TerraPass, a certain amount for every airplane is set up. At the end of the flight, passengers pay that amount, and they’ve offset their carbon footprint. Funds go towards four different types of power production that make tangible reductions to greenhouse emissions: farm power, landfill gas capture, abandoned coalmine methane capture and clean energy. I am projecting an aviation industry that in the coming years is very concerned and actively taking steps to address its carbon footprint, and we will position STAjets at the forefront of that cultural change. The future looks very green to us.

long range (2,200 nautical miles) with short field capabilities, and is able to land on runways as short as 1,000 feet. While other planes may fly higher or faster, land on shorter runways, or have longer ranges, no other aircraft in the world offers the combination that the PC-12 does. Its Pratt-Whitney single-engine turboprop is incredibly fuel-efficient, and the plane itself is available in a number of different configurations including passenger, cargo, and surveillance layouts. So versatile and effective is the PC-12 platform that the United States Air Force employs a highly modified version in Special Forces applications. STAjets is not only the most reliable PC-12 operator in Orange County, but also offers existing PC-12 owners ways to lower their operating costs.

Located in the quaint little village of West Hollywood off uber-chic 3rd Street lies the James-Bond-meets-Reser voir-Dogs-st yle Duncan Quinn showroom. Hailing from London, Duncan grew up with an appreciation for proper gentlemen’s fashion. Clad in Savile Row suits his father gave him, Duncan started his journey as a true man of fashion, traveling around the world to absorb and educate himself on style for the worldly gentleman. Spending time in such bespoke locations ranging from Africa and India to Japan and St. Barts in the Caribbean, Duncan broadened his perspective on the world of fashion in a huge way. No other place spoke to Duncan more than the South of France, and it’s easy to see this reflected in his unique, au courant taste in design. Everything Duncan does is a reflection of his travels. Once you are greeted at the 3rd Street boutique you immediately feel as if you are “one of the lads.” After you are introduced to the art of shaving in the boutique’s shaving station, enjoy a fine scotch and consult with one of Duncan’s associates to select fabrics, fit and take measurements for your customcrafted suit. Also, be sure to peruse the equally impressive ready to wear collection displayed throughout the showroom, which is ideal for a classic look on the fly. Duncan Quinn’s price range is rather broad as it is based on a myriad of options, so rest assured there is a look for every man at this noble haberdashery. 8234 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, 323.782.9205, www.DuncanQuinn.com

The Perfect Fit For an impeccably assembled ensemble, just follow these five tips.

1 The right jacket should be tailored especially for you, and should also have hand-stitched lapels and functioning cuffs.

94

2 Always tuck in the shirt and maintain a crisp collar – metal color stays are a must. Shirt cuffs may be customized to accommodate for a large watch, and ¼ to ½ inch of the cuff should show.

3 For a cutaway or spread collar, use a Windsor knot; for a narrow collar, a four-in-hand knot is appropriate. The bottom of the tie should hit the middle of the belt buckle, and please, no thin ties unless you’re playing in a New Wave tribute band.

4 Pants should have a flat front sans pleats or cuffs, and suspenders should only be used if you have no belt loops.

5 Only wear black shoes with a black suit; in all other cases, opt for brown, and always be sure your belt matches. Match your sock color to the suit rather than the shoes, and if you can’t match the color precisely, go a shade or two darker rather than lighter.

bask BRIEf Fall 2011 US & World Economy The US economy, along with much of the world, has been experiencing an easing in the pace of recovery growth and may have slipped back into a recession. However, the contraction should be mild and last only a few quarters. Our housing market and bank lending industry are the largest laggers inside the country, and the euro-zone sovereign debt crisis, along with China’s inflation/growth fight, are the biggest current international concerns. Nevertheless, the S&P 500 is expected to earn a record $100 per share this year for the first time. The US recovery is dependent on global growth more than ever. Internationally, there are two divergent economic camps. First, the euro zone, Japan and the US (developed economies) are dealing with deficits, debt and failed stimulus programs in the aftermath of a financial meltdown. Growth in these regions will be slow for many years until these long-term structural problems are mitigated. Second, the rest of the world did not have an internal financial meltdown or housing declines (most countries don’t even have home mortgages). These developing economies, mostly Asia and South America, are growing rapidly but are battling the resulting by-product of local

100

inflation. These ballooning middle classes want western goods, which is helping the developed economies, but leaves us at the mercy of demand fluctuations resulting from local problems. Therefore, events such as interest rate hikes in China or elections in India have become ever more important to the US economy and financial markets.

US Stock Market Given this economic backdrop, we expect the financial markets to stay in a contraction until the fourth quarter as prospects of improving global growth are renewed. We continue to forecast 1300+ for the S&P 500 for year end. US debt and deficit fears, Europe’s solvency questions, developing countries’ inflation, weak bank lending and the

domestic housing market will keep us at below average P/E ratios as earnings continue to move up along with large hoards of cash on corporate balance sheets. Because of these current worries, US equities remain cheap. The S&P 500’s forward P/E ratio is about 11.5 at the 1120 level. While this is above the 10.3 low in 03/09, it is well below the 15 year average of 17.1 and even the previous bear market lows in 1997 and 2003 (16.0 and 14.1). Style wise, large cap growth is the most undervalued with small cap value being the priciest. Corporate cash is at an all time high at 28% of overall assets. While cheap equity prices alone are not a recipe for success, they do indicate that the current stock market is being pulled up by earnings instead of pushed up by speculation. We believe that stock purchases below the 1120 level (S&P 500) will be rewarded over the next 6-12 months.

Fixed Income Interest rate swings have been tricky this year as they have moved counter intuitively to the Fed’s QEII actions. Excess demand from QEII bond purchases led to lower prices (higher yields), and the end of the program’s drop in demand resulted in higher prices and

www.baskmagazine.com

Finalbrief_0911.indd 2

9/8/11 7:15 PM

lower yields. Short maturity, high credit investments remain at negative returns compared to inflation. High-yield bonds, however, are currently attractive with above average spreads and defaults at a low 0.8% (vs. 4.3% average). These bonds have been volatile but have had an inverse correlation to the foreign bond funds and floating rate securities we have been pairing them with. Our combination of “inflation balanced bonds” continues to provide good dividends and modest appreciation. Municipal bonds, after a press scare last year that never materialized, have remained strong this year. California’s painful budget process and the prospect of higher taxes in 2013 are pushing this asset class up despite long-term interest rate risks.

US Housing The aftermath of the US housing bubble on consumers has been devastating. At the peak, homeowners had $13.5 trillion in home equity that has now eroded to $6.1 trillion, wiping out a decade of appreciation. Construction related job losses were the worst and contributed the most to the high unemployment rates in the southwest and southeast. While the inventory of REO homes is still large, several positive factors are also emerging: household debt service ratio is back to 11.3% - a level equal to lows in the early 80s and mid-90s; personal savings rates are back to mid-90s levels; affordability of new home mortgages is the lowest since before 1975; housing starts are at their lowest since 1975 at 23% of the peak in 2007 and 38% of the last 35 years average. Home purchases today, for 3-5 years or longer, look very attractive.

Summary A step down in global growth and European solvency fears led the financial and commodity markets down this summer. We believe this is a four to six month slow section of our weak recovery, and once Asia resumes its heated growth, the global recovery will pick up speed again. However, markets are cautious and awaiting confirmations before moving up again. For now, the dollar and commodity prices are in a holding pattern with equal chances of rising or falling, thus keeping prices steady. While US policies, debt and deficits provide plenty to worry about, we are still the safest country in which to live and invest. Stocks and commercial real estate are cheap and will reward patient investors. In the meantime, we are garnering cash flow returns in fixed income assets while we wait.

GOING the DISTANCE Even for the abecedarian autophile, the name Ferrari carries with it the promise of an experience as exclusive as its Rossa Corsa paint and prancing horse moniker. The noise of the engine alone is a testament to the DNA of the brand. A Ferrari at speed is a mechanical version of the Italian telephone greeting, “Pronto.” And any one of the manufacturer’s

102

stable of greats sitting at a stoplight feels like a violation of nature, like an elephant in a tutu. Impatience is hard-wired into these cars and their genetic code is that of a missile hanging on the wings of a fighter jet: there is a purpose and it is freakishly fast and full of fiery fury. As with everything in life, there is a price to be

paid for this passionate experience of frenetic pace. These vehicles (one hesitates to even label them as merely ‘cars’) are temperamental in a first-time-bride-drinking-her-seventhcup-of-coffee-on-her-wedding-day kind of way. Their emotional passion reverberates against their flighty fragility, and what is a trifle to most can be a big deal for a Ferrari.

9/7/11 7:21 PM

So, when the brand introduced the model FF, many doubted that the hefty promise could be successfully delivered. After all, this is the first all-wheel drive Ferrari has produced, it is a four-seater, and the brand insists that the FF is intended to take on the most difficult of driving challenges (read: snow, rain, and other wet and low traction conditions).

We checked into it for our readers, and bask is happy to tell you that Ferrari nailed it!

Body Style Shooting Brake (or hatchback, if one wants to be brutto parlare about it). Designed for four passengers, the back seat will be quite

comfortable even for six-footers on a trip to Big Bear, and the rear storage compartment boasts enough room for everyone’s overnight bags.

Under the Hood Tech Most All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles transfer some power from the transmission to drive the secondary axle, much like the relationship between a supercharger and an engine’s camshaft. At the end of the day, there has to be power lost in the transition. With the FF, there are two transmissions, one on either end of the engine. That, combined with the 6.3-liter V12, means you have 651 prancing horses playing on each end of this AWD monster. To harness this much power, and the 504 lbft of torque that comes with it, a computer monitors each wheel’s speed and slip, vehicle yaw, steering angles and inclination, and then predicts where wheel spin will occur. The computer then kicks into action, determining which wheel to add or subtract power to in order to maintain both speed and control. As a result, the vehicle is docile and shows little understeer, even when fully engaged in turns, as the AWD system reads the FF’s stance and pulls the vehicle through tough curves.

In the Cabin Tech While the navigation system is underwhelming, the driver’s information window shows what the future of the industry is about. The central display is an enormous tachometer with two high-res LCD screens on each side. Each LCD has separate information displays, from speed to trip information to navigation to the rear camera view when reversing. Finally, the optional back seat entertainment system with viewing screens on the rear of the headrests will keep the little ones entertained when traveling farther than a grocery store run. This is a serious competitor for the “Coolest Piece of Tech” on the road today, and a huge step forward for the Ferrari brand. Raid the piggy banks and get on the waiting list now! Master of His Domain Technically Speaking with Danny Sullivan

H

e’s on a first-name basis with Google’s Larry and Sergey, as well as the Twitter team, and flies to Facebook for press conferences with Zuckerberg. And everyone from CNN to Fast Company rings him for the inside story. Danny Sullivan of Newport Beach is OC’s secret tech guru who publishes the national, in demand, Huffington Post-like site, SearchEngineLand.com. He writes, rants, seems more surfer than tech head and has his high-profile keystrokes in everything you and I use daily on the Internet. I caught up with Danny, 45, at his Balboa Peninsula bungalow. Outfitted in floral camo-colored shorts, a surf shirt and no shoes, he took time out from his workday and nightly rollerblade routine to talk search, trends and gadgets and share his role in breaking “Binggate” earlier this year.

Are you a geek? Probably. But I’m not a programmer, and I don’t live in my mother’s basement. I couldn’t tell you about every Star Trek episode created, but I could tell you more than I probably should. You’re constantly quoted in the press (WSJ, ABC, Forbes). Why are the big shots coming to you? Well, I’ve been covering search before Google even started. I don’t know that anyone has been covering the space as a journalist any longer than I have. I don’t have any agenda to be pushing, and I don’t play favorites.

You tell it like it is. Yeah, I’ve been a bit grumpy lately. But when I do a rant, I will try to make sure it’s fair or explain why. I’ll give you details why I think you suck and how you can suck less. Your role in the Bing sting this year? Yeah, “Binggate” or “Googlegate.” Google really disagreed with what Bing was doing (essentially ripping off its search results), and wanted to tell their story. They called me up and said I was the one they wanted to tell it. Google’s never been in any kind of Hollywoodstyle sting operation, so it was an incredible story to break. We had 13,000 people on the site, at the same time, reading that story every second it was going. The story made The Colbert Report. Do you work for Google? Not at all. It’s funny, though, my kids call me a Googlist because they thought Google was a person. I would get lots of calls and the kids would ask who it was, and I’d say, “Google.” Or I’d be at conferences and my wife would say, “He’s gone off to see Google.” Is that an @ tattoo on your wrist? I got it around 2007. I wanted something that said Internet and I actually thought the @ was kind of going away because email was dying. But then Twitter started picking up, so I feel like my tattoo got a new lease on life. Speaking of, you have over 150,000 followers on Twitter? Yes, I’m on Twitter’s Who To Follow List. They pick a few hundred, and they recommend me (@dannysullivan) for technology.

Average workday for you? It can be anything. Yesterday I was up at Facebook, because they called an instant press conference about their new chat product. Then, that afternoon, I went over to Google to talk to them. Your offline life? The beach. We like going out in the harbor, a bike ride here on the boardwalk, just traveling. I love Chronic Tacos, Angels games, the Vans skate park. Your OC connection? I love Orange County. Cut me, and I’d bleed orange. I grew up here. I lived in Britain for twelve years, traveled all over the world and this is still my home. A lot of people who got their start today, did it because of a guide I wrote when working in a business park in Irvine. So Orange County has this interesting connection into this entire search world, and nobody realizes it. Tech tips? Be master of your own domain. I’ve seen some people on Google+ say, “Oh, you don’t even need a blog.” Yeah, if you’re an idiot, because Google+ could go away. Have your own local copies, be able to get your data out. Fall tech trends: Definitely watch what’s going on with Google, as Facebook’s new competitor. It’s also going to be interesting to see what happens with the new iPhone, what will go on in the tablet space, the Android 4.0.

Should everyone be on Twitter these days? I feel like you have to be at this point. Even if you don’t tweet, it’s just like having an email address.

The Second Harvest Food Bank’s leading ladies always deliver when showing support for one of Orange County’s worthiest causes, and they are especially adept at helping to introduce remarkable new designers to the community. The gracious hosts of the evening, Suzan Paek and Kacey Bruno, rallied the supporters to celebrate another outstanding Parisian luxury brand taking residence in South Coast Plaza. Longchamp, known for their well-appointed luggage pieces, adorned the boutique with a myriad of different collections in all shapes, sizes and colors for guests to peruse in preparation for the upcoming fall travel season. A little taste of

The Larder at Tavern in Brentwood is a great spot to pick up gourmet food to go, and their macarons make a delicious ending to any meal. They feature three flavors each day such as Mexican chocolate, vanilla and espresso. As the seasons change, you’ll see specials such as pumpkin and salted caramel. TavernLA.com

One of the most treasured gifts from Paris comes in a delicate pink box decorated with cheerful red cherries...Ladurée macarons. They are nothing like the American version (macaroon with two “o’s”), which is a dense coconut cluster often dipped in chocolate. These are utterly delicate cookies, made of almond flour, sugar and egg whites with a crispy exterior, a chewy interior, and fillings of buttercream, ganache or jam. They come in a variety of flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and pistachio, and the best ones literally melt in your mouth. Don’t be surprised by their diminutive size. Although small, usually 1” diameter, the flavors are intense, and extremely satisfying. And great news for those with special diets: because they are made with almond flour, traditional macarons are gluten-free. Appearing at parties thrown by the chicest hostesses in town, macarons are now readily available stateside. ‘Lette Macarons in Beverly Hills rival the best in France. Paulette and her husband operate the store, which is dedicated solely to these special cookies that they bake daily. They worked with a master pastry chef in France to develop their proprietary recipes and import only the best ingredients from Europe. The vivid hues of their macarons reflect the natural flavors that infuse their delicious almond cookies. Each has its own personality— there are 12 everyday classics such as violette cassis, Columbian coffee and earl gray tea. Seasonal specialties for fall include chestnut and peppermint. The five-tiered tower is the perfect centerpiece for your next party, or send your guests home with a unique gift: a mini box of your favorite flavors specially collected by Paulette. Macarons can be shipped overnight from their store or from the gourmet food emporium, Dean and Deluca. LetteMacarons.com and DeanDeluca.com

Although the menu changes frequently, there is usually a dessert at Marché Moderne in Costa Mesa that features an oversized macaron accompanied by seasonal fruit and gelato. After trying this dessert just once, guests are always left clamoring for more. To enjoy at home, macarons can be specially ordered by the dozen in such flavors as tangy, citrusy yuzu or decadent mocha. MarcheModerne.net At Layer Cake Bakery in Irvine, the cases are filled with beautiful French pastries such as napoleans, eclairs, and fresh fruit tarts. They also have an amazing selection of cookies—chocolate chip, peanut butter and oatmeal. But the macarons are definitely the stand out here, with over twelve boldly flavored selections daily such as green tea, mango and lemon. LayerCakeBakery.com There is a full breakfast and lunch menu at Opera Cafe and Patisserie in San Diego that features such French favorites as Nutella Crêpes, Quiche Lorraine, Ahi Niçoise and Croque Monsieur. The bakery has a broad selection of croissants, breads and desserts—beautiful cakes, tarts, éclairs and cream puffs. The half dozen macaron assortment is a delicious introduction to the little almond cookie and includes chocolate cappucino, pecan caramel, pistachio, dulce de leche, raspberry and cinnamon. OperaPatisserie.com Interested in making your own? The Gourmandise School of Sweets and Savories at the new Santa Monica Place offers a class in French Macarons that will remove some of the mystery around the making of these delicate Parisian cookies. The class focuses on the technique of making macarons and you will learn how to make such flavors as hazelnut chocolate, s’mores and pistachio. You also learn how to make black currant buttercream, lemon custard and marshmallow filling, so you can take your skills home and develop your own flavor combinations. TheGourmandiseSchool.com

peru

With Peru’s revitalization, it is now one of the top travel destinations in the world. Until you make it there yourself, here is the buzz on the latest eateries that showcase Peru's sophisticated cuisine.

bask@table | by heidi ristau

One of the first “fusion” cuisines, Peruvian food has blended the Old and New Worlds for over five centuries. When the Spanish conquered the Incan Empire, they brought European techniques to native ingredients. Peruvian food was not only influenced by Spain, but also by China and Japan, when hundreds of thousands immigrated to Peru in the 1800s. Besides seafood, Peruvians use a lot of potatoes in their cooking, as exemplified in the dishes at Casa Inka in Fountain Valley. The Papas (or Yuca) a la Huancaína consists of sliced boiled potatoes (or mashed fried yuca), served on a bed of lettuce with a slightly spicy cheese sauce, hard-boiled eggs and Peruvian olives. Fried mashed potatoes are stuffed with seasoned ground beef, black olives and egg, and served with salsa criolla in the Papa Rellena. The causa is an exotic presentation of yellow seasoned mashed potato infused with Peruvian chilies and stuffed with avocado and your choice of crab, tuna or chicken. CasaInkaRestaurant.com Near Hollywood and Vine, Los Balcones del Peru starts your meal by offering delicious and addictive sweet potato crisps served with a sofrito-like sauce. The ceviches are fresh and bright, but continue with the quinoa salad, full of choclo (corn), asparagus, crispy bacon, a poached egg, and tossed with a maracuyá (passion fruit) sesame seed dressing. For a main dish, try the traditional Aji de Gallina, a shredded chicken dish in sauce thickened with bread and walnuts, or the juicy Bistek Patron, grilled rib eye, beans, plantain, fried egg, and Chorrillana sauce.

Mo-Chica, Ricardo Zarate's modern-Peruvian food stall, has been praised by the foodie press, so we’ve been waiting in anticipation for his newest LA venture to open. Picca is a lively cantina serving sashimi, tiraditos, ceviche, slow cooked beef-stuffed potatoes, crispy quinoa salad, blood sausage with ricoto pesto, a selection of anticucho (brochettes) like scallops with aji amarill and Santa Barbara prawns with lemon grass yuzo, and main plates like duck leg confit in black beer sauce with cilantro rice. And the best part? Nearly everything on the menu is $10 or less. Mo-Chica.com and PiccaPeru.com Don’t let the name, Renzo’s a Taste of Peru, or the location, a food court near John Wayne Airport, prevent you from trying some of the best Peruvian ceviche this side of the Andes. Renzo specializes in three ceviche dishes, in which you regulate the spice level—mild, medium or spicy. The ceviche de pescado consists of cubes of white fish soaked in citrus juice, then acid-cooked until firm. Plump scallops, shrimp and squid are marinated until tender in the ceviche de mariscos. And a third, equally delicious shrimp-only ceviche, includes refreshing, sweet cubes of mango. RenzosTasteOfPeru.com Step into Encinitas’ Q’ero and you are instantly transported to what seems to be an intimate restaurant in a small village on the Inka trail. The food is Peruvian and South American and the owner focuses on slow cooking and the pleasures of dining. You can easily make a meal on appetizers alone. Try the Anticuchos de Corazon, a popular street food in Peru, which are succulent morsels of grilled beef heart with roasted fingerling potatoes and huacatay (black mint) ocopa. Also delicious are the Conchitas en Sajta, quinoa crusted scallops in a spicy aji amarillo and onion based sauce. QeroRestaurant.com www.baskmagazine.com

Cooking with Passion With the holiday season approaching, we asked The Food Network Star, Aarti Sequeira, to share her favorite fall foods & recipes

Green Apple & Ginger Chutney Serves 6

What got you cooking? It started about eight years ago. I was a newlywed, and I’d just moved from the job I loved in New York (working at CNN) to LA to join my husband. I couldn’t drive, and I couldn’t work because I was waiting on my work visa to come through. And while sipping coffee and watching “The View” was decadently relaxing, after 12pm, I didn’t know what to do! So I reached for a copy of the “Joy of Cooking,” and started working my way through it. Every day, I’d walk down to the supermarket, grab the necessary groceries, lug them back home, and then cook away, so that my husband had a delicious (sometimes!) dinner on the table by the time he got home from his job. I made A LOT of duds. But cooking is really all about practice, so eventually I started making some homeruns.

What are your favorite food memories and/or current or past traditions for the fall holidays? Neither Brendan (my husband) nor I really like turkey, so whenever Thanksgiving rolls around, I make a couple of roast chickens. It’s weird, I know—the first time we had people over, they were a bit disappointed not to have the big bird, but honestly, chicken just tastes better to us! One of these years, I want to order a heritage turkey; I have a feeling it will have a LOT more flavor. And after watching Marc Forgione rock the venison on the Thanksgiving-themed finale of the Next Iron Chef, I might try a little deerchestnut combo at the Thanksgiving table this year!

174

www.baskmagazine.com

What is your favorite fall food to cook with? I love the flavors of fall: chestnuts, roasted squash, braised meats. I’m really excited to tackle goat this autumn!

What dishes do you recommend for fall parties/holidays? Bacon. Wrapped. Dates. They are always a crowd-pleaser! They’re also pretty easy to make your own: stuff them with chorizo, or goat cheese, or chorizo’d goat cheese (oooh!)… they are so easy, and make your house smell unbelievably good so that people feel like eating the second they walk in! Also, there’s an Indian snack called “Chewda” that you can find at Indian markets; it’s made of chickpea flour noodles, flattened rice flakes, nuts and a very specific spice mix. I make an Americanized version with corn flakes and rice krispies, and finish it with a turmeric and curry leaf spiced oil. It is so addictive! People will be crowded around the bowl! You can find my recipe by searching for “chewda” on the Food Network website.

What are your favorite fall dishes? With so many big meals this time of year, I often find my fridge full of leftovers. Then there are those nights where I’m so stuffed from all the rich meals of the season that all I want is some grilled chicken and vegetables. In both of those cases, a little jar of chutney comes in handy. It can dress up some leftovers or a piece of grilled meat, add an interesting flavor to a salad dressing, even fancy up a simple sandwich. That’s why it makes a fantastic gift. My favorite at the moment is my apple and ginger chutney (see recipe)—it’s a lovely balance of fall spice flavors, a little heat and a kiss of autumn sweetness.

2 tablespoons canola oil 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced 6-inch thumb ginger, peeled, sliced into thin planks, then sliced again into thin matchsticks (about ½ cup) 1 teaspoon garam masala ¼ to ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 pound green apples, cored and diced into ½-inch cubes ½ cup sugar 2 teaspoons kosher salt Generous grinds of freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1) Warm canola oil in a medium pot over medium-high heat. When shimmering, add cumin seeds and fennel seeds; they should sizzle upon contact. If they don’t, turn the heat up a little. Cook about 30 seconds. 2) Add onions and ginger. Cook, stirring often, until the onions turn golden, about 10 minutes. 3) Now add garam masala and cayenne pepper. Cook, stirring vigorously for about 30 seconds. 4) Add apples, sugar, salt and pepper. Stir and cook until sugar melts. Keep cooking, stirring often, until the sugar thickens and caramelizes, and the apples soften, about 10 minutes. 5) Add apple cider vinegar. Boil until the chutney thickens again. Taste for seasonings and serve.

Private Party An intimate dinner unveiled

For more information, visit Pace’s web site at TasteofPace.com. She will be expanding her supper club to Orange County and San Diego this year.

Underground supper clubs. Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot about this fresh, unconventional idea. In a nutshell, they’re professional dinner parties thrown by talented (and often amateur) chefs that bring together a group of strangers, usually in a private home. Common in other parts of the world, they have really started to surface in the US over the past few years. Because they operate without licenses or inspections, which accounts for a bit of the secrecy, they often create unique and moving dining experiences. For the local food lover, they are a welcome alternative to the typical restaurant scene. For the traveler, they are a way to understand the culture of a new city by eating with locals.

“For the local food lover, Underground Supper Clubs are a welcome alternative to the typical restaurant scene.” I was fortunate to attend one of these get-togethers by the skillful chef, Pace Webb. Once a month she hosts a supper club in Los Angeles at anywhere from a warm and welcoming home to an art gallery or special event venue. The general vicinity is indicated when the event is announced, but it’s not until a few days before the dinner that the exact location is revealed, thus creating another part of the secrecy. The location I attended was a beautiful, Spanish style house in the Hollywood Hills. As I walked through the gated entrance and up a small flight of stairs, I had no idea what to expect. I arrived at a beautiful tile patio covered in Persian rugs and outfitted with oversized furniture and

176

a roaring fire. Shortly thereafter, I was greeted by Pace, who handed me a delicious cocktail and introduced me to some of the other guests. An eclectic mix, people had come from all over town to experience the night. Like me, some were first timers. However, the majority had been many times before and wouldn’t miss it for anything. I could see why. It felt like a dinner party thrown by one of the coolest hosts in town. As the sun set, the group meandered over to a large, outdoor table where everyone could dine together while enjoying the spectacular city views. Pace uses local, seasonal ingredients to create new and exciting dishes that expand her boundaries as a chef and artist while also perfecting her techniques. Her meals usually stick to a basic framework consisting of a complimentary cocktail to awaken the palate, followed by three courses. Tonight, we had a vine ripe tomato Michelada, a fresh lime mint puree stacked with eggplant, feta and olives, pork tenderloin with plum salsa and barley pilaf, and to finish, a refreshing popsicle made from a trio of summer melons. Pace is always very kind to those with special needs, such as meat or dairy restrictions, and will always make something just as delicious—even if she is unprepared for such a request. Since music is such a big part of her life, Pace likes to include a local musician at her parties. Therefore, we ended the night by filling our glasses with more wine and making our way back to the fire, where we relaxed to the tunes of a talented singer-songwriter. It was hard to leave, but I look forward to attending the next secret supper club again soon.
