With the holidays right around the corner, I can’t help but think about everything I have to be thankful for this year. This is our 2nd Anniversary Issue, and our publication wouldn’t be possible without our dynamic team and wonderful supporters. Over the past two years, we’ve had extremely successful events, created new partnerships, and had such an amazing time shooting the fashion spreads for each season. Our Fall 2012 issue was shot at a breathtaking home in Coto de Caza, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.

At the top of my list of things to be thankful for is my team. Amy Adams, our editor-in-chief, has done such an outstanding job these past two years, and I am so grateful for her hard work and dedication. She works 24/7 and continues to inspire the whole team with her incredible work ethic. I also want to recognize my associate publisher, Nick Gannon, who is not only great at his job, but a great friend as well. Of course, each and every one of our partners and sponsors make up the bask team, and we could not do it without them. This season brings the exciting launch of our iPad app that includes exclusive content for our bask readers. We want to reach out to our followers across several platforms and having a tablet version of our publication was inevitably the next step. Introducing the iPad app seems to fit perfectly with the launch of our 2nd Anniversary issue as a celebration of bask and the past two years. As always, we’ve packed this issue full of stand-out pieces, including a profile on Youngsong Martin, owner of Wildflower Linen. You’ll also find our showcase of three remarkable travel destinations for the season to inspire you to take that much-awaited holiday vacation. Read up on Spain’s Basque Country, all the must-see spots while visiting Switzerland, and the gorgeous getaway at the Rosewood Hotel in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Plus, we are eager to share our favorite fall fashion picks to warm you up as the temperatures cool. Along with all of my thank-yous, I owe the biggest thank you to you—our readers—who make my work so rewarding! Enjoy the Fall issue and cheers to a great holiday season ahead.

Fall Destination: With a photography studio in Corona del Mar just inches from the beach, one can anticipate Tony will be frequenting the beach for Southern California’s fairly mild winter. Alma Mater Anecdote: Tony has an esteemed background in fashion, as is evident by his artistic lifestyle and impressive photography expertise and skill.

Alma Mater Anecdote: “I never took for granted the feeling of walking through Harvard Yard to attend my classes at dusk. It is old and rich with history and you can practically smell the astute philosophy and intellect in the air.” Favorite Fall Destination: “I traveled to the island of Bali once and stayed for the entire month of September. The weather, not typical fall weather, was hot, just the way I like it.” Words of Wisdom: “Less is more. Don’t over-think, over-dwell, over-cook, or over-buy.”

Fall Destination: An Orange County resident, Cyrus enjoys the warm climate of Southern California fall—a perfect time of year for the photographer to capture some beautiful shots with the plethora of colors. His surface photography includes cliffs and interesting exteriors, so it’s likely to find Cyrus heading to a scenic spot for some stellar snapshots.

2 Tony Lattimore Fall Destination: “In September I am traveling to the Caribbean Island of Curacao with my wife to do missionary work and aid the poor and elderly.” Words of Wisdom: “Coming from a fitness background I must say—don’t let the holidays be an excuse to get fat! Workout, walk, park further from the mall and use it as ‘hiking’ time.” Giving Thanks: “I am so thankful for my amazing family! I am married with many children and life couldn’t be any better!”

3 Kirsten Prosser Fall Destination: Kirsten is accustomed to fall weather in Denmark, where she was born and raised, as well as Spain, where she worked for over seven years as a fashion designer before settling down in Newport Beach. Giving Thanks: After being the lead runway specialist for DKNY, Kirsten realized her passion and opened the successful onQueStyle boutique to remarket her clients’ highend designer clothing.

5 Michelle Lyn Martin Alma Mater Anecdote: “UC Santa Barbara… need I say more?” Favorite Fall Destination: “I’d love to visit New England in the fall.” Show and Tell: “Turkey chili and cornbread with honey butter…perfect for a cold, cloudy night.” Words of Wisdom: “Remember to enjoy each moment, because the holidays fly by so quickly. When your family starts to drive you crazy, just be thankful you have one to celebrate the holidays with.”

6 Jordan Melendrez Alma Mater Anecdote: “I always love the first day of school. Even now going to college at New York University, there is something about the first day of classes that is really special and unique.” Fall Festivities: “I am definitely a huge Thanksgiving person. It is always very relaxing and wonderful to spend time with family. The food is always fantastic, too!” Words of Wisdom: “Just go with it. Not everything will go to plan no matter how hard you try, just take a deep breath and go with the flow.”

8 Larry Weinstein Alma Mater Anecdote: “Football is akin to religion for many in the midwest, and some of my favorite fall memories are football weekends while at Ohio State University. There was nothing as exciting as when the atmosphere on campus became electric in anticipation.” Required Reading: “Although not typically what I gravitate towards reading, I am finishing up a fascinating book titled The Prime Ministers by Yehuda Avner. It’s an insider account of Middle East, and particularly Israeli, politics. The author served as advisor and speechwriter to four Israeli Prime Ministers and was privy to topsecret military operations and the high-level peace negotiations. A fascinating insider’s perspective.”

9 Robert E. Palmer Favorite Fall Destination: “I love traveling to Santa Fe in the late fall/early winter when the ground has a light dusting of new fallen snow.” Show and Tell: “A full-on old style turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. There is nothing better.” Words of Wisdom: “If you enjoy and embrace the holidays and your family, there is little stress.” Giving Thanks: “The same as always—my family.” Pumpkin or Pecan pie: “Pumpkin…You can’t carve a pecan!”

Fall Destination: Heidi enjoys spending time outside hiking, rollerblading, paddle boarding, swimming, and playing outside games—so any place that allows outdoor activities in the fall is ideal. Words of Wisdom: Staying active and enjoying life to its fullest seems to keep Heidi moving, especially during the hectic holiday season.

Fall Festivities: “I love Harvest; farmers markets are my big thing. And I enjoy cooking comfort food!” Words of Wisdom: “‘Failing to prepare is preparing to fail’ -John Wooden” Giving Thanks: “My health, my family.” Halloween Costume Contest: “A Rubik’s Cube … 1982. I wore a big box all day at school and it was a pain. But I still get comments about it from my childhood chums.”

Fall Destination: “I love visiting San Francisco in the fall, but this year I want to make it out to Chicago. I would love to visit Lincoln Park and admire the fall fashion on Michigan Avenue.” Travel Essentials: “One thing I will never travel without is my beloved Nikon SLR camera.” Pumpkin or Pecan Pie: “Hands down, my favorite Thanksgiving dessert is pumpkin pie with homemade whipped cream, of course.”

Fall Destination: As CEO and founder of Optivest, Inc.—a wealth management firm for some of the wealthiest families—Mark keeps himself very busy all year long, especially with donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to Christian ministries. Ten percent of the gross annual revenue from Optivest Properties is donated to various charities around the globe. Required Reading: In his spare time, Mark wrote Cash Out, Cash In—The After Success Investment Guide, a guide for managing the responsibilities of wealth accumulation.

Alma Mater Anecdote: “My first experience crewing on the set of a movie was while attending the American Film Institute Fellowship Program. We rotated positions and I was a grip on a night shoot and someone asked me to put a blanket over the genny to dampen the sound. After we put the fire out I learned how to use C-Stands to build a tent around the generator! I’m still learning on every production.” Giving Thanks: “My son Atticus is healthy, strong, and ready to celebrate the big first birthday!”

11 Mark Van Mourick

Alma Mater Anecdote: “I loved playing on the varsity women’s volleyball team at University of Maryland. What I didn’t like so much was that they made us wear white button-down shirts and kilts to play!” Favorite Fall Destination: “Vermont is the place to be in the fall; the changing leaves are incredible.” Show and Tell: “I love making Kalua pork in the fall; so easy and so good.” Words of Wisdom: “Keep a good bottle of California cabernet at hand. I suggest Shafer One Point Five. Open as needed.”

Alma Mater Anecdote: “First day moving into the dorms and meeting new friends, that feeling of a fresh start and infinite hope for the future, endless possibilities, the beginning of the rest of your life.” Words of Wisdom: “Hot Yoga & Hatha Yoga! Sweat out the toxins and set a good intention.” Giving Thanks: “My wonderful family and friends…to have more [resources] than needed living in this country, when there are people out there less fortunate.”

15 Stuart Volkow

Fall Destination: “Last fall, I spent a week driving through the south of France and saw some stunning fall foliage, especially in vineyards. I was lucky enough to paraglide in the French Alps on this trip and the views were unforgettable!” Show and Tell: “As soon as cold weather hits, I love making ginger snaps—I grew up making them as Christmas cookies, and I still refuse to make them until at least September!” Halloween Costume Contest: “I dressed up as a jar of Nutella last Halloween, which was especially fun since I carried an actual jar around with me all night.”

18 Melinda Serra What is Melinda’s favorite part of crafting the ideal home décor for bask home? Show and Tell: “I’m able to have complete control of the creative process. I get to do what I love—play with beautiful items, work with my generous sources, fantastic retailers, and my incredible clients and friends— what more can a girl ask for?”

Lang Lang eurYdice Through October 14 Award-winning and South Coast Repertory favorite Sarah Ruhl brings one of the greatest love stories of all time to the stage with an inventive new vision of the classic myth, Eurydice. Artistic Director Marc Masterson leads this take on the whimsical and beautiful tale of a battle of love and fragility.

September 27 & 28 Experience back-to-back performances by musical geniuses from two polar extremes at the Segerstrom Hall. On the 27th, Lang Lang, the man heralded as the “hottest artist on the classical music planet” by the New York Times, takes the stage to perform Dvorak, Mozart, and Rimsky-Korsakov with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. On the 28th, Pat Metheny, “one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time,” according to Time Out London will perform with his group, the Pat Metheny Unity Band. Mr. Metheny has brought together an extraordinary ensemble of world-class musicians to create a soaring evening of jazz, featuring bassist Ben Williams, Chris Potter on saxophone, and the brilliant drummer Antonio Sanchez.

He co-founded Genesis, left the band in 1975, and went on to create several solo albums, including the masterpiece So, which was nominated for Album of the Year in 1986. He also created the song and video for “Sledgehammer,” which holds the record for most awards for one video. All of this and more, live under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl.

October 24-December 31 And now for something completely different; no, not Monty Python— Teatro ZinZanni presents Love, Chaos & Dinner, an amazing night of cirque, comedy, cabaret, and a five-course gourmet meal inside a luxury tent at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. After a decade of success in Seattle and San Francisco, this “nightclub of your dreams” presents a fun and magical evening to be shared with friends in the troupe’s 100-year-old Belgian Spiegeltent with culinary fare by Patina Catering. photo: Paul Kolnik

Memphis November 6-18 The four-time Tony Award-winning play, including Best Musical, Memphis transforms the Segerstrom Center for the Arts into an underground dance club of the 1950s, a run-down radio station, and an era fraught with racial tensions. The Associated Press raves that Memphis is, “the very essence of what a Broadway musical should be.” The performance is filled with laughter, rock and roll, and heartpounding emotions.

The show closes out an 11-week European tour for a rock icon that has been called “gigantic” (Rolling Stone), “thrilling” (The Atlantic), and “the stuff of legend” (the Irish Independent). Blunt, laced with dark humor, and unapologetic, Burroughs dishes out unexpected tidbits that, while perhaps not always immediately applicable, offer fresh food for thought that provides a happy respite from the stale clichés typically associated with selfhelp texts.

HOPE FOUNDERS OF HARVESTERS JENNIFER VAN BERGH & JILL JOHNSON-TUCKER HAVE WORKED FOR TWO DECADES TOWARD A VISION TO ELIMINATE HUNGER IN ORANGE COUNTY

When Orange County comes to mind, it’s common to think of the glitz and glam associated with this beautiful location. On the outside, it’s picture-perfect—sunny beaches, gorgeous homes along the coast, luxury cars, and designer shops. So, it’s difficult to fathom the perplexing fact that 615,000 people in Orange County are at risk of hunger each month; that’s 1 in 5 people. Out of that ratio, over 50 percent are children and seniors. Twenty years ago, two dedicated friends met with the same passionate vision of eliminating hunger in Orange County. Jill Johnson-Tucker was practicing law while Jennifer Van Bergh was a banker. Between their successful careers and raising kids, they were globally aware and always challenging each other on how they might contribute further to society. Utilizing her connections at the Second

Harvest Food Bank (SHFB), Johnson-Tucker gradually began to get involved in the community. She and Van Bergh arranged a tour of the SHFB and decided to form their own fundraising group called the Harvesters. By putting one foot in front of the other, they reached out to their respective groups of friends through a luncheon, and now a group of nearly 50 women are involved in this cause. For the past 20 years, the Harvesters’ largest event, the Annual Luncheon & Fashion Show, which has raised approximately $5.5 million to date, has cultivated donors and encouraged friends and several companies in Orange County to contribute. In addition to the fundraising, the Harvesters love getting their kids involved. “It’s been a terrific way to teach our kids how important giving back is to the community [and] to start them out at a really young age. As they get older, they sort groceries, [help at] food drives, mobile pantries, and the Kids Cafés. It teaches our children how to have that responsibility to their community. And to make their community a better place for those less fortunate,” says Jennifer Van Bergh. On Thursday, October 11, the Harvesters will be celebrating their 20th Annual Luncheon & Fashion Show, with longtime sponsor South Coast Plaza and participants such as Chanel, Chloé, Dior, and Fendi. They have raised more funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank than any other organization, which has turned the luncheon and fashion show into one of Orange County’s premiere charitable events. This philanthropic affair would not be possible without the help of generous sponsors like Cartier of South Coast Plaza, who has partnered with the silent auction for many years, and who will sponsor this year’s champagne reception.

The Annual Luncheon & Fashion Show has rasied more funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank than any other organization. This year’s event: October 11, 2012 “The Harvesters started out as a few business women and ‘mommy and me’ friends. It has evolved with other women, who were attracted by our cause, [and] have the same vision. We volunteer our time, but mainly we’re fundraisers. We want to raise as much money as possible with the hunger relief programs. We are connected to business people with resources and time to commit in helping. The Harvesters is a cross-section of OC [women] on different levels to come together to raise money for one cause,” Jennifer Van Bergh said. As the devastating effects of the economic downturn have caused an increasing number of individuals to turn to food banks, it’s more important than ever to get involved. With an uprise in unemployment rates, job loss and household incomes significantly reduced, Second Harvest Food Bank wishes to raise awareness of hunger in Orange County. “We live in an influential, prosperous area, and yet two zip codes over, people are going

34

hungry. This movement is not just about the less fortunate in certain pockets,” says Jennifer Segerstrom, Harvesters Chairman. “People have turned in from all levels at this time for food. It’s paramount, the need for food. People have turned their hearts and wallets to causes that really call to them, especially for the kids, seniors, all realms and incomes, status, and demographics.” The Second Harvest Food Bank offers a helping hand to the 69 percent of people at risk of hunger in the Orange County area who do not qualify for government food assistance programs. This generous organization is linked with 500 charities in Orange County—including shelters, senior centers, homes for abused children, rehab centers, and other emergency assistance organizations—to serve an astounding 1.4 million pounds of food monthly. While their efforts are successful so far, their goal is to reach the additional 375,000 children, working poor, seniors, single parents, disabled, homeless, and all who are in need—a goal only feasible with the help of volunteers and generous donors. One amazing program that Second Harvest Food Bank has initiated is a Backpack program for children whose families cannot afford three meals a day, and who might not otherwise have a nutritious meal; the Food Bank provides enough food to fill a backpack and distributes them to children after school at the end of the week. Another is the Brown Bag for Seniors Program, which is designed to help alleviate hunger and malnutrition among the elderly by providing nutritional groceries twice a month. These are just a few of the dozens of wonderful programs SHFB provides.

[L to R] Elizabeth An, Irene Martino, Susan Etchandy

How to Help: Financial burdens have resulted in a significant increase in these hunger rates, and families are faced with the difficult decision of buying groceries versus other basic needs such as paying their rent and medical bills. Many senior citizens are having difficulty living solely off of their bare retirement fund and rising medical costs, let alone affording nutritious food. If the thought of people going hungry isn’t compelling enough, imagine children or grandparents living on a fixed income that could not provide all the necessities to survive. This is a compelling concern and while many have responded to this emotional issue, there’s always a need for more help. As of December 2010, one in four children in Orange County relied on the government’s free and reduced lunch programs as a steady source of nutrition, and 63 percent of all food stamp recipients were children. You may help in various ways: make a taxdeductible donation (nearly 95 cents of every dollar is spent directly on programs and services), sponsor a food drive at a local school, become a food donor, volunteer, and educate friends, family, and co-workers through a tour. Join the special events the Second Harvest Food Bank hosts, including the annual Food & Wine Event and Golf Tournament.

For more information on helping those in need, or to attend the Harvesters 2012 Luncheon & Fashion Show, visit FeedOC.org. Cheers to 20 more years of successful giving!

Habitual debuts a ready-to-wear collection inspired by art

I

It was a typical Tuesday afternoon. Sunny, warm, and what I often refer to as ‘Southern California comfortable.’ I was leaving Orange County and headed to LA to meet the owner of HABITUAL, Teal Ahn. The drive wasn’t nearly as long as I expected, and since I arrived at their offices early, I had time to observe the neighborhood and adjacent buildings. The façade of the building didn’t say much; it was a simple structure, and the parking lot was nearly full. Inside, I was greeted by a young woman who led to me to a modest-sized room where I met with Ahn and her design director, Jennifer Wojinski. Comfortably ensconced, I took inventory of the room: old hardwood floors, white walls, racks of denim in various washes, and colors, black and white framed photos on the walls near the office desks as a means of inspiration to each who occupied the space. I was originally introduced to HABITUAL from an email I’d received last year. I rarely have time to read (in any great detail) all of the emails that land in my inbox. Delete. Spam. Delete. But something caught my attention when I started scanning the images of this email. The designs were unique, different from the denim styles I’d seen over and over again. And the color! It was fall when I viewed the catalogue in the message, and the colors were beautiful autumnal hues. I think people tend to shy away from any shade besides black,

This blend of stylish comfort and classic creativity properly characterizes the HABITUAL collection

Nike If you’re anything like me, you probably have old, outgrown, or worn-out sneakers stashed in random closets throughout the house, smelling up your coats and getting in the way. Illogical as it may be, I just can’t bring myself to throw away footwear when it seems there must be some use left in the materials. That’s where Nike Reuse-a-Shoe comes in: created in 1990, this recycling program has been growing by leaps and bounds and is constantly making strides to save the earth. In essence, Nike’s aim is to repurpose old shoes into new uses—mostly into Nike Grind, an innovative substance used for sports surfaces, but more recently into their apparel as well. Clothes out of old shoes? Don’t be deterred by the unorthodox concept; these styles exemplify the best of Nike designs and showcase clean lines, eye-catching colors, and unbeatable fit. In addition to using Nike Grind in details such as zippers and buttons on apparel and

They’ve recently introduced a material called Flyknit, a groundbreaking use of minimalist theory to engineer shoes using just the essentials. These sneakers are made of feather-light yarn and fabric variations for a flawless fit with nominal materials, maximizing both sustainability and running performance. Nike’s environmental initiatives don’t stop at footwear: they also create apparel using recycled plastic bottles, including professional sports uniforms such as the Nike Hyper Elite basketball shorts and soccer team kits including shorts and jerseys made of nearly 100% recycled polyester. Dixon Golf Dixon Golf believes that the products you use on the course should be as green as, well, the green itself. Don’t want to sacrifice your game for eco-friendly balls? you don’t have to. With balls such as the Dixon Earth outperforming top competitors such as Nike one Platinum and Titleist Pro V1 in PGa testing, Dixon maintains sustainable production processes without forfeiting a bit of quality. Each style is made with green cores, and with additional features such as specialized Eco-covers and Elastodynamic recyclable cast urethane covers, Dixon Golf is truly one of a kind. In addition, the balls are designed to benefit specific aspects of your game; try the Wind for distance, or the Fire if you play with a single digit handicap. The North Face Have you ever been hiking and come across unsightly debris, ruining the view and generally being a nuisance? It’s easy to be annoyed by such litter, but tougher to do something about it. Propitiously, The North Face is taking steps to make it not just easy but both enjoyable and gratifying to enjoy the outdoors in a clean way. The outdoor and athletic apparel and gear company takes objects such as plastic bottles that become a nuisance when tossed aside and makes them into beautiful, functional

The company has plans to convert 65% of their products to reach the bluesign® standard, an independent system with strict guidelines for environmentally friendly products and processes. Currently, The North Face produces a myriad of clothing options with over 80% recycled materials, and their entire 2012 line of solid fleeces is made of 100% recycled materials. The world’s best chocolate, private banks, perfectly created watches, and punctual trains. If those are the only things you know about Switzerland, then you’ll definitely want to join us on a trip to the ultimate Alpine heaven, where you’ll discover so much more...

Speaking of those trains, the Swiss rail system truly is fantastic, allowing travelers to easily range all over the country. So purchase a Swiss Pass, which allows you unlimited travel on the whole Swiss system, including trains, buses, trams, boats and even mountain cable cars. You can buy one before you go; they range from 3 to 30 days; a first-class ticket for 15 days is 775 Swiss francs (one Swiss franc is basically on par with the dollar). Swiss-Pass.ch My trip began by flying into Zurich on SWISS airlines, which was an easy, nonstop trip from California, especially in Business or First Class, which offer state-of-the-art fold-down-flat beds and topnotch service. So make sure to get some rest as there’s a nine-hour time difference and plenty to keep you busy once you arrive. Jump on the train once you clear customs, and Zurich is a ten-minute ride away. Zurich is a bustling big city, set on the edge of Lake Zurich. The Swiss may speak four languages within their country (German, French, Italian, and Romansh), but one thing stays the same wherever you go in this land-locked, water-rich place dotted with 7,000 lakes; the lake you see takes the name of the city on its shores, making them a snap to remember. On Zurich’s lake, swans float by majestically in the shadows of ancient buildings juxtaposed with modern glass-and-chrome

structures. Meander along the Bahnhofstrasse on your way toward the lake, for that’s where the city’s best shopping (for watches, chocolates, and much more) is concentrated. Make sure to stop by Old Town, which dates to pre-Roman times, and make sure to see Grossmünster Church, constructed in 1100 AD. Stay at the B2 Boutique Hotel, a former historical brewery, and relax in the thermal waters of their rooftop spa with panoramic views of the city. B2BoutiqueHotels.com Next, it’s back on the train to St. Moritz and the Engadin Valley, where breathtaking Alpine adventures await. Stay at the famed Badrutt’s Palace, where celebrities like George Clooney vacation, or opt for the more modern Hotel Giardino Mountain, with its stunning views and cozy jewel-box restaurant Stüva, which perfectly evokes an old Swiss inn (BadRuttsPalace.com). I visited in summer, when Lake St. Moritz wasn’t frozen solid. That meant taking an exciting sail on a zippy racing boat, rented via Segel-Club St. Moritz; in the winter, we’d have seen them actually play polo on the solid ice. Giardino-Mountain.ch Summer in the Engadin also means a chance to ride an electric bicycle up into the hills. Flying Cycles in Pontresina will get you going, then you’re up, up and away, on an exhilarating ride along the many biking (and hiking) trails that dot the massive mountains enveloping this stunning valley. But remember, you do have to pedal; the electricity is only to help with the big hills!

If kiteboarding is your idea of a sensational way to spend the day, head to Lake Silvaplana, where the crowds form to take advantage of the always-roaring winds. Just remember to bring a wetsuit, as the Engadin’s glacier-fed lakes never get particularly warm. Make time to ride the cable car up to the breathtaking Diavolezza Glacier; jump into the funicular to soar high above the tree line in Muottas Muragl, and be sure to book a horse-drawn carriage to take you from St. Moritz to Lake Staz, where Restorant Lej da Staz serves up some of the best veal ragout you’ve ever tasted, in a postcard picture-worthy setting. In winter, buy a multiple mountain ski pass and whisk down the slopes, then grab a train to the next stop and head up another hill. By the end of the day, you can ski around the whole valley like a pro. When it’s time to leave the Engadin, take the famous Glacier Express for a daylong trip through the majestic Alps down to the southern lush valley of Valais (GlacierExpress.ch). Once you arrive, don’t stop until you get to Crans-Montana, the chic twin towns way up the mountain. Go up, up, up from the valley floor until you arrive at LeCrans Hotel and Spa, an exclusive five-star gem with only six suites and seven rooms. This ultimate Swiss chalet overlooks the massive valley and provides incomparable pampering. It may be hard to leave this oasis in the sky, but do explore the many hiking trails right out the front door. LeCrans.com

Try hiking to lunch at the Colombire Hamlet; you’ll find this picturesque eatery by following the Tsittoret streams (the still-working irrigation channels built in the 14th century, to manage the snow runoff each year). Sample their wood-fire melted Raclette, paired with dark bread, cornichons, and new potatoes; it is a wonder, and a perfect example of one of Switzerland’s signature meals. Pair it with one of the Valais region’s many fine wines (you’ll see vineyards everywhere lower in the valley) and you may not want to walk back home!

Bern clock tower

“FOUNDED IN MEDIEVAL TIMES, MUCH OF BERN REMAINS SEEMINGLY JUST AS IT WAS BACK THEN, INCLUDING THE ZYTGLOGGE, ITS ICONIC TOWER WITH ITS STILLWORKING CLOCK BUILT IN 1530.”

Once you’ve gotten your fill of the beautiful Valais, get back on the train and make the nearby Montreux Riviera your next stop— especially if you’ve been clever enough to coincide your visit with the Montreux Jazz Festival (MontreuxJazz.com). Set on the shores of Lake Geneva, the 46-year-old fest held every July draws class acts from every genre—to the likes of Van Morrison, Buddy Guy, and Bob Dylan who performed this past year. To stay just the right distance from all the revelry, choose the Grand Hotel du Lac in nearby Vevey, a pretty five-star boutique hotel perched right on the water in the town Charlie Chaplin called home. Stroll the lakeside path, visit the renowned art museum, and ride on the vintage carousel while in Vevey. Or just simply lounge by the pool and soak up the sun. HotelDuLac-Vevey.ch But wait! There’s still more to see and do before leaving this idyllically beautiful country. Bern, the country’s charming capital, is just another easy train ride away. It’s such an amazing place that the whole city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Founded in medieval times, much of Bern remains seemingly just as it was back then, including the Zytglogge, its iconic tower with its still-working clock built in 1530. There are incredible special tours that will take you up inside the tower, so be sure to go when it is about to strike, and you will see the complicated inner workings of the clock in all its glory. Make the majestic Bellevue Palace your Bern home base, and you’re sure to rub shoulders with the Swiss statesmen who work in Parliament next door. They often gather in the hotel’s famed bar or can be spotted dining at La Terrasse, with its sweeping views of the city. From there you can wander down the hill and actually take a swim in the Aare River, since the water is clean and clear everywhere in Switzerland—even right below the House of Parliament! You’ll want to head for the famed BärenPark, too, where the city’s symbolic burly brown bears live by the river under some shady trees. Bellevue-Palace.ch

For a final bit of serious pampering before taking leave of Switzerland, you’ll need to stop at Lake Lucerne, where Park Weggis Resort is nestled amidst an incredible landscape. A stunning resort perched right on the lake, it boasts a pretty beach, gorgeous suites with sweeping lake views, a Lalique caviar bar, and Annex, a Michelinstarred restaurant with an award-winning wine cellar. But the Sparkling Wellness Center in the heart of the resort is the real draw. With wellthought-out spa programs and Tibetan-inspired treatments designed to heal, cleanse, and rejuvenate, it is a dazzling place that makes for the perfect capper to a delightful Swiss adventure. What was once an isolated region of farmers and fisherman, steeped in folklore and traditions of their own making, the Basque Country has decidedly materialized at the forefront of modern gastronomy.

once you get past the gelatinous texture— and that you’re eating a pig’s ear. To extend your culinary journey, leave the city behind for a unique dining experience well worth the scenic drive into the Basque hills. Victor Arguinzoniz, a humble chef who has gained notoriety for his unique style of grilling with different types of wood embers, commands the kitchen at the asador, Etxebarri.

Driving through the characteristically lush green hills, interrupted only by sheep, cows, and the red tiled roofs of stone farmhouses, it’s easy to see the connection between the ubiquitous farm-to-table traditions. Nestled on the Bay of Biscay, extending

Once you’re about to enter, stop to take it all in before immersing yourself in the standing room only crowd. Crumpled napkins line the floor, orders are shouted from the bar to the kitchen, patrons stand with a beer in one

hand and a half-eaten pintxo in the other. The honor system reigns, as you help yourself from the heaping options on the countertop, only to inform the bartender what you owe upon satisfying your cravings.

Drawing on early memories of his mother cooking over an open fire, without gas or electricity, Arguinzoniz is completely selftaught in the art of grilling with wood on self-designed grills.

Perhaps the most famous of Basque cities, San Sebastián prevails as the undisputed capital of Basque gastronomy. With more Michelin stars (16) per square mile in the world, legendary chefs and their rising protégés are dazzling palates with everything from uncomplicated pintxos (small plates or tapas) to highly technical dishes that employ the tricks of molecular gastronomy.

The highly acclaimed Bar Alex helmed by Chef/Owner Gonzalo Dominguez boasts delectable pintxos and raciones (larger portions) that are thoughtfully paired with a wine list spanning every region in Spain.

Through trial and error, he has discovered which branches emit the best flavor and aroma for specific products—pairing oak with seafood such as goose barnacles, branches from grape vines with meat like his tender chuleta, and olive branches with delicate vegetables like summer peas. “Respect for the product is paramount,” says Arguinzoniz.

The social hub of Basque culture, traditional pintxo bars provide an introduction to Basque culture in a communal environment where haute cuisine is served in small doses. An extension of one’s home, you are automatically invited in with trust and respect. The Parte Vieja, or Old Town is a pedestrian-only zone, with wall-to-wall pintxo bars. You can walk aimlessly down any street and feel the warmth and conviviality

Off the beaten pintxo path, Bar Alex merits discovery, especially if you snag one of their sidewalk tables and people watch while you nosh. Heavy on local clientele (always a good sign), Dominguez changes his menu frequently and offers daily specials such as chorizo a la sidra: a lean, local chorizo sausage braised in Spanish cider that melts in your mouth. BarAlex.net Borda Berri is another excellent stop along the pintxo trail, where you can tempt your taste buds with crunchy pig’s ear doused in a tximitxurri sauce, which is quite delicious

Offering a more traditional approach, it’s a family affair at the Michelin-starred Zuberoa, a sixteenth century stone house in the countryside that is run by the Arbelaitz family. Exposed wood beams and stone walls create a bucolic ambience with reclaimed touches that modern day restaurants clamor to achieve. The soft-spoken Chef Hilario Arbelaitz proudly serves extraordinary dishes with rustic authenticity. baskmagazine.com

Asador Etxebarri

With respect to traditional Basque dishes, such as Bacalao al Pil Pil (salted cod cooked with garlic and olive oil) and Txipirones en su Tinta (baby squid in its ink), Arbelaitz also shines with unique dishes that may consist of a poached egg served over a foie gras purée with a vegetable velouté and truffle sauce. Focusing on seasonal ingredients, Arbelaitz successfully achieves the perfect balance between the old and the new, rooted deeply in Basque tradition. Zuberoa.com In contrast, Martín Berasategui, one of the three San Sebastián restaurants that earned 3 Michelin stars (the others are Arzak and Akelarre), is modern and elegant, with white-gloved servers anticipating your every need. When asked to describe his style of cuisine, Berasategui simply states, “It’s my style. My cooking is a reflection of my palate, my sensitivity, and many small dreams.”

62

“My cooking i s a reflection of my palate, my sensitivity, and many small dreams.” He goes on to say, “I know that X and Y might go well together, but I challenge myself to discover how I can elevate that to create something memorable.” And elevation is certainly something he accomplishes with scientific wonders like his Globos Ahumados, smoked balloon served with mille-feuille of endives, oily fish, and watercress. Or with his Escarcha de Chocolate, a frost chocolate that deceptively looks like a towering piece of dense chocolate cake but is actually light and dissolves in your mouth. MartinBerasategui.com

Martin Berasategui

Over the last fifteen years, there has been a true renaissance in San Sebastián’s dining scene and the culinary inspiration it is cultivating among young chefs. Another notable San Sebastián native, Pedro Samper, is the Executive Chef at Parador Nacional del Saler. Samper began cooking locally (under the tutelage of chefs such as Berasategui), launched Bar Alex with Gonzalo Dominguez, and eventually migrated to Valencia, where he combines his hometown experience, a degree in chemistry, and local ingredients to create stunning dishes that double as works of art. As equally innovative as it is traditional, the lure of Basque cuisine draws foodies and non-foodies alike from various regions. The Basque Culinary Center was created in 2009 to offer aspiring chefs degrees in gastronomy and culinary arts. There is no doubt about it—the Basques consider gastronomy to be an art, and the secret behind their exquisite cuisine is part of their cultural identity.

NESTLED IN THE STATE OF GUANAJUATO, MEXICO, THE MUNICIPALITY OF SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO UNWIND AND DELVE INTO ANOTHER CULTURE. THE CITY BOASTS THE DUPLICITY OF BEING SMALL AND INTIMATE, YET VERY COSMOPOLITAN WITH ITS URBAN APPEAL. THE ARCHITECTURE IS MOSTLY FROM THE COLONIAL ERA, AND AS YOU STROLL THE COBBLESTONE STREETS YOU CAN FEEL THE AUTHENTICITY AND CLASSICAL NATURE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. On average, San Miguel de Allende’s temperatures are the coolest in January and warmest in May, and July usually yields the most precipitation. The best time to visit this vibrant and culturally rich colonial town is April through May to escape the heat of Southern California, or September through December for a mild fall and winter. San Migueleñas are known for their fiestas, and there are festivals for all types of occasions throughout the year. In September, celebrate the Mexican Independence Day and La Pamplonada— the running of the bulls that is based on the Spanish tradition. Christmas is one of the most important holidays in the traditional, devoutly Catholic culture, so if you plan on visiting during that time of year be prepared to book hotel rooms far in advance, and note that most restaurants are closed on Christmas Eve.

The famous cobblestone streets of San Miguel

After landing in the Léon Del Bajio Airport (BJX), your destination is only about a two-hour drive away. In El Centro, the heart of the city is El Jardín, Spanish for “the garden.” The vibrant life can be seen here from the time you leave your hotel in the morning to sightsee and shop until the time when

you head out to enjoy the nightlife at a bar or show. El Centro is home to the famous Gothic style La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel—the parish cathedral that is oftentimes considered the symbol of San Miguel de Allende. Spend the day people watching or join one of the housing and garden tours that leave from El Centro and meander through the streets to learn about the stunning architecture, artistic designs, and the city’s history. Stay at the luxurious, yet quaint Dos Casas Boutique Hotel where you can choose to enjoy the refurnished family home, which features steam rooms, jacuzzis, and fireplaces in some of their suites, and daily gourmet breakfast. Dos Casas combines traditional and contemporary Mexican themes in four varieties of elegant, charming room options for reasonable prices. Enjoy the picturesque views from the terrace day or night—with a famous Spanish wine, Mexican tequila, or any one of the multiple other beverages offered. Situated less than 10 minutes from El Jardín, you will relish in your ramble to “el corazón” of the city. DosCasas.com.mx Or you can enjoy “una noche” in La Casa de los Olivos, another gorgeous hotel in the heart of SMA—less than a five-minute walk to El Jardín. One of their largest accommodations, La Aceituna junior suite is a large, Provençalstyled bedroom with a small living room and a bathroom complete with a jacuzzi tub. Managed by the same team as Dos Casas, La Casa de los Olivos is sure to make you feel right at home. Enjoy a quiet morning or watch

the sunset on the rooftop terrace that provides a panoramic view of San Miguel de Allende. CasaDeLosOlivos.com While a plethora of restaurant options may tempt your taste buds as you wander the cobblestone streets, everything you need awaits you at Cumpanio. This gourmet restaurant, lounge, panadería, and pastelería serves a selection varying from freshly baked breakfast pastries to delicious dinner choices. Located just down the road from El Jardín, stopping by for sustenance before people watching in El Centro or embarking on the day’s adventure is extremely convenient. Cumpanio.com If you want to venture out of the city a ways for a bit of pampering, visit The Mayan Baths, only 15 minutes north of San Miguel de Allende. These thermal baths (with subterranean hot springs reaching 101 degrees, as well as an outdoor pool) allow you to bask in the sunlight and watch the sun set over the Laja Valley. The exclusive setting is only open for reserved events and parties, so be sure to schedule ahead of time and purchase your tickets in town. While tickets do not include massages, indulge in either a Swedish or Hot Stone treatment with one of the therapists to take full advantage of The Mayan Baths’ offerings. ArcAngelBaths.com Boldly located in the Colonia Centro is the Rosewood Hotel, San Miguel de Allende. Rest in one of the most luxurious and conveniently located abodes in the colonial town, all the

while taking in everything the city has to offer. With 67 rooms, a restaurant, a rooftop tapas bar, Sense Spa, a fitness center, outdoor pools, and a children’s’ zone, this is the ideal locale for the individual traveler to a large family outing. Not only are the hotel amenities gracious, but they also offer Spanish language and cooking classes, as well as workshops for sculpting, painting, and photography. The outdoor or indoor business and banquet rooms provide space for comfortable business meeting locations, and golf courses, horseback riding, and cultural tours to artisan markets and galleries are also based out of the Rosewood Hotel. It is truly the best place to settle in and begin your adventures in San Miguel. RosewoodHotels.com While taxis are available, daily activities are mostly within walking distance and most galleries, restaurants, or shopping destinations are located in El Centro. San Miguel de Allende is especially known for its woolen weavings, metal work, and talavera pottery, so take the time to meander through some shops and stumble upon some incredible treasures. Cruise La Calle del Dr. Ignacio Hernandez Macias, or any number of “las calles” to take a piece of the city home with you. With boutiques, furniture, jewelry, and more, you will surely find everything from small souvenirs to large pieces for home furnishing, so that you may always remember “la vida” of San Miguel de Allende.

Bask in Fashion:

A Sneak Preview of this Season’s Trends

Pink and yellow diamond flower earrings by Lugano Diamonds will contrast nicely with the leaves and colors of fall; LuganoDiamonds.com

Fall fashion this year does not disappoint, and designers have produced wares that reflect their own fashion opinions and style. From the “soft-modernity” theme at Dior, to Miuccia Prada exclaiming that her collection is simply about “the pleasure of fashion,” it is certain that subtle-yet-rich neutral-toned ensembles, practical-yetbeautiful handbags, and accessories such as crystal-embellished pumps, vintage-inspired leather gloves, and chic oversized sunglasses will be noticeable trends this season. Miu Miu’s Embellished Heel Pump has gorgeous crystal accents stacked up the back of the heel; with such a unique and sumptuous design, they are certain to get you noticed! Exclusive to Nordstrom; Nordstrom.com

Barton Perreira sunglasses at Aris in Laguna Beach are the perfect shades for this season; ArisOnTheCoast.com

Dior eloquently translates the very popular colorblocking from previous seasons with the wool and mohair Metropolitan Coat and streamlines lady-like femininity throughout the collection with the use of soft colors and figure-flattering designs. Dior.com

Prada’s understated and stunning handbags are always a fall favorite, and the Saffiano Lux Tote, with its classic cream color and hearty style, will hold as little or as much as you need without losing its shape, and is certain to complement any outfit. Prada.com

bask bRieF us & WoRld economy Weak job growth and better than expected earnings have dominated recent headlines. After a healthy 226,000 per month average job growth in the first quarter of 2012, a measly 80,000 jobs per month were added in the second quarter of 2012, stalling the decline in the unemployment rate (currently 8.2%). Combined with the start of a recession in Europe, this resulted in a strengthening dollar and weak commodities. The price of oil dropped, despite the continued rumbling from Iran. Add the continuing drama from

84

us stocK maRKets Greece and Spain and you end up with heightened volatility in the financial markets and lack of confidence from investors. Worldwide growth has also slowed, yet continues to be lead by the BRIC and developing countries. These countries’ percentage of the world’s GDP has now grown to 20% and 25% respectively, yet their shares of global market values are only 12% and 15%. This has created one of the widest undervalued gaps since 2003, and at some point soon the stage will be set for a large catch-up rally.

As I write this update, the S&P 500 is under 1400, right in between early April’s high of 1420 and early June’s low of 1278. We expect the stock market to continue to straddle this 65-day moving average level until the fall—pushed and pulled by Europe, China, and jobs—killing time until the election. Interestingly, the S&P 500 closed up 9.5% at the 6-month mark, exactly halfway to the 19% increase we forecasted in January for the year-end gain. Over the next 12-36 months we are optimistic as market valuations (prices) have lagged while earnings continue to reach new highs. This is the third major displacement since

1950 and corresponds to similar poor consumer confidence and cloudy outlook as in the 1950s and 1970s. Fortunately, these past periods were followed by long periods of above-average stock performance. Let’s hope history repeats itself.

Fixed Income It is a good year to collect income from bonds, as interest rates have gone lower still (keeping prices up) and high-yield debt has remained positive (yet volatile). With the Fed’s “twist” extended until year-end and talk of QE3 (Quantitative Easing Round 3), we expect interest rates to stay low well into next year. This is good news for mortgage borrowers, bad news for CD holders. One negative by-product of ultra low interest rates is increased volatility; an interest rate move from 1% up to 1.5% may only be a half percent move nominally, but it is a 50% increase in the relative rate. Thus, even small swings in interest rates magnify change in price and borrowing/lending costs.

Real Estate The one bright spot in commercial real estate today is apartments. Rental rates have hit an all time high in 74 of 82 national markets tracked by REIS, Inc. (a real estate data firm). The report further states that the nation’s apartment vacancy rate has fallen to 4.7%, the lowest since the end of 2001. Apartment building prices are at all-time

highs in some cities with new developments trying to catch up. Many families are now renting instead of owning due to tighter lending standards, higher down payments, unstable jobs and soured views on singlefamily home appreciation. We expect this trend to continue for a few more years.

Jobs, Taxes & the Election Every national election seems to be important, yet it is hard to remember an election with more economic ramifications on the line. GDP, job creation, income taxes, estate taxes, deficit spending, long-term debt, and healthcare are all intertwined and are at critical points for our country. For us, 2013 investment tax rates are at the front of this line, with top Federal capital gains rate to go from 15% up to 23.8% and dividends from 15% up to 43.4%. Surely this cannot be good for new business investments, which in turn create jobs, earnings, and demand for real estate. There will be talk of a 1- to 2-year extension of the current tax rates but little chance that Republicans and Democrats will budge on the exclusion of the $250,000+ wage earners who run the businesses. We don’t expect any significant changes on the 2013 “fiscal cliff” until the American people decide to either raise taxes and let the Federal Government “help” the economy, or lower taxes so that the people can do it themselves. Until November, expect a “go nowhere” economy and a polarized political environment.

Summary We are stuck in a stubbornly slow economy with weak job growth, but we are not headed for a recession unless taxes are raised significantly next year. Low interest rates and modest returns are the result. OptivestInc.com

the connected home Home automation provides energy efficiency, convenience, comfort, and security

For decades the automated home has been a flight of imagination for sci-fi authors and futurists. There are many reasons for its delayed arrival—from incompatible standards to technology blunders. Technology has finally caught up and after much anticipation, that innovative home we all believed we would grow up in has arrived. Today, almost any home can be automated. Hans Vestberg, CEO of the global electronics giant, Ericsson, has famously announced that the “Networked Society” is here to stay as well as anything that benefits from being connected to the Internet. Far beyond the 5 billion mobile phones worldwide, it will include an astonishing 50 billion connected devices by 2020. This so called “Internet-ofThings” will include your car and your home. Home automation provides energy efficiency, convenience, comfort, and security. It can vary in intelligence from universal remote controls to complex self-learning networks.

86

Efficiency HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) is by far the largest energy expense in most homes (usually over 50 percent of total energy use) and where the most efficiency can be gained. Struggling to set the thermostat just right will be a thing of the past with devices like the Nest Learning Thermostat. Founded by two Apple iPod engineers, Nest sports a brilliant interface design emulating the iPod “wheel.” It’s simple to program temperature by day and hour. Reset the thermostat manually, and the device “learns” your habits. Set climate zones and control the device via the web or a mobile app while you’re away from home. You can also quickly analyze your HVAC usage history for improving efficiency. Nest.com Getting some appliances online may still be somewhat superfluous. We were not overly impressed by the Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung RF4289 French Door Refrigerator. Embedding a below-average tablet in the door with a few apps is hardly a reason to switch.

Entertainment If you’re a techy of sorts, you’ve tried every universal remote under the sun and are still stuck with multiple remotes for different screens in different rooms. Invariably the family splits up between Mad Men, Monday Night Football, video games or music. The solution? Savant. Its revolutionary platform enables rapid system configuration without the need for lowlevel programming, transforming any HD display into a “control portal” that delivers user interaction previously available only through dedicated devices. You can control audio/video, telephone, digital display, and energy management from one display. SavantSystems.com More forward thinking comes with the Samsung Smart Washer/Dryer app. Never again forget about your laundry. This program lets you know when the load is done no matter where you are and accompanies a King-sized, front-load touch screen washing machine or dryer perfectly. More quotidian, but suggestive of the connected washer and dryer trend, is Kenmore’s Connect feature. The appliances allow you to communicate live over a phone connection using modem technology circa 1980. Remember those annoying faxconnecting sounds? They allow a tech on the other end to troubleshoot your machines anytime, and all you need is a phone. Along with leaving wet clothes in the washer one too many times, it’s also common to forget to turn the lights off or close the garage door. Another remote mobile app solution comes from the Craftsman Garage Door app that is connected to their new opener with AssureLink connectivity. Can’t remember if you’ve left your garage door open? No problem, just use your smartphone to check and close. Utilities are spending billions upgrading to Smart Grid technology so they can monitor meters wirelessly and better regulate power generation and distribution. With the Modlet from ThinkEco, you can have your own smart grid. You can program and oversee your electrical outlets remotely. Each Modlet module connects wirelessly to the Internet. You will be amazed how much vampire power your appliances, computers, and entertainment systems drain when you are not using them! The Modlet also allows you to turn devices on and off remotely via the Internet or your smartphone. TheModlet.com

88

Security Forget about expensive, cumbersome security cameras. Wi-Fi enabled mini-cameras are unobtrusive and can be monitored from anywhere via an Internet browser or mobile app. The Dropcam and the Stem iZon make it easy. Both can record to the Internet and send alerts when they sense motion while allowing both video and audio monitoring. The Dropcam can also see in the dark. The iZon has some unusual limitations, however, such as a limit of five minutes of viewing at a time with your wireless products. Dropcam.com

Convenience This brings us to home robots. iRobot still dominates the space with its storied line of home cleaning robots for almost any kind of floor, gutters, and pools. They may not replace a cleaning crew, but for everyday use, nothing beats their advanced algorithms that learn the shape of your floors and self recharge by returning to their base. iRobot.com Home health monitoring for seniors can provide increased quality of life and more freedom from caregivers or institutional care. Monitoring that just a year ago would have needed professional equipment and skills has come to consumer prices and convenience. Sensor technology is transforming health care. Sonamba and Independa offer an assortment of home health monitoring devices providing customized tablets for seniors to communicate with caregivers and love ones. Accessories include blood pressure cuffs, EKG and ECG monitors, heart rate monitors and blood oxygen sensors. Working together they can help health care professionals prevent unnecessary trips to the ER and provide more diagnoses and treatment decisions. Sonamba.com, Independa.com

wa r m • l i va b l e • t i m e l e s s TRENDS: THE GOOD & THE BAD If you take the literal interpretation of a trend, the result will be mundane. Infusing your own personality will make your home, your own. THE HISTORY OF TRENDS Look at the runways in Milan, Paris, and NY: the styles, and inevitably the colors that come from the great fashion houses will predict what you will soon see in home décor. Last year, I saw a profusion of pinks down the runway. I recently walked into my furniture workroom and into a sea of ballet pink, fuchsia, purples, and orchids.

PROPORTION A big design mistake is often made when people go to an enormous showroom or warehouse and buy furniture without considering scale and how the furnishings will fit into their own spaces. COVETED ACCESSORIES The proper accessories as well as the right quantity will tie your room together to give a finished and complete look. For warmth and hominess, my favorites are candles, books, and family photos.

POSITIVE OUTCOME Should you work with a designer, be honest about your thoughts and tastes. Share your spouses’ thoughts and opinions as well, and don’t discount them or give the impression that they’re unimportant as you’re sure to encounter a time when they will matter. Also, be up front about your budget; nothing is worse than seeing what a designer has come up with and then revealing an unrealistic budget. Any true professional can work within your budget, or tell you if it’s unrealistic.

Melinda Serra gives some tips on creating comfortable yet sophisticated environments. With over a decade of experience, the strength of her design is taking a clients’ needs and personality and creating warm livable interiors.

Lastly, go with your intuition when hiring a designer—a good working relationship and a successful project outcome depends on good communication and trust.

I heard you’ve been known to repurpose table linens into clothing for fashion shows… is this true? Inventive. Where or why did you come up with this idea? I’m often asked to speak in front of large groups about my business, and I wanted to showcase the amazing textiles I work with. I realized that my table linens can be used just like raw yardage to do classic couture draping—just like in an apparel design studio. Working with runway models and a few safety pins in about a minute, I can turn my tablecloth into a red-carpet-ready gown. I do one after another throughout the show, fueled by great surges of adrenaline. My table linen fashion shows have been extremely well received wherever I’ve done them. Of course, those one-ofa-kind creations only exist in the moment: when I pull out the pins afterward, the linens go right back into my rental inventory.

You’ve spent many years creating other people’s visions; how would you define your personal style? Whether I’m expressing my own personal vision or fulfilling a client’s visual concept, I work the same way to complement whatever venue context, theme, or mood I’m presented.

What gives you the most inspiration? Nature is my biggest inspiration. The natural world around us is often perfect in its organic balance and textural integration. I try to mimic Mother Nature when I combine colors and stylistic elements.

PHILOSOPHY

ANTIQUES

“It’s about antiques, it’s about people, it’s about design.” This is the mantra Nina Naderchi, the owner of Philosophy Antiques, espouses regarding both her business and lifestyle. Her passion for antiques began nearly 20 years ago with an unshakable attraction to a unique woodcarving, and she is now one of the best interior designers and antique collectors located in Southern California.

The Beginning of Something New

A mere three months ago, Nina opened her own antique store following the retirement of the owners of Steven-Thomas and led by the encouragement of friends who believed in her considerable talents in antiquing and interior designing. The store opened in Costa Mesa in June and has been abuzz with customers, both novice antique hunters and experienced shoppers. Nina understands the pull to stores such as her own, given her history in the art of design and antiques, beginning with visits to estate and garage sales before she began expanding her repertoire and mastery of this industry.

Busy With Business

Nina began her work in the antique and interior design business with William Lyons, where she worked for 2 years before opening her own store in Lake Forest. Just one year after opening this location, a client came to her with an idea for a new store and a request to partner with Nina, which she happily accepted. The two worked together in Yorba Linda for three years before her partner had to back out, and Nina’s career was jumpstarted.

“Designing is my number one passion. I can’t help it. That’s relaxing to me. I have to rearrange things.” With fresh motivation, Nina spent the next 12 years working for Steven-Thomas, where she gained popularity for her design skills and developed a distinctive style that current customers of Philosophy Antiques continue to recognize. She is renowned for re-crafting pieces based on her artistic visions and utilizing and manipulating antiques in a green, sustainable manner. When confronted with decorating a 2,000-square-foot kitchen for a client in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, for instance, she drew inspiration from a 100-year-old Renaissance-style buffet, which she recycled into the cabinetry. Nina’s unique ability to manipulate antique furniture and room layouts in a way no one else can is a skill she began honing as a child under mother’s tutelage, who was also a collector.

Mastery of Antiques

In addition to this early instruction, Nina has taken a slew of history classes to become an expert on classical designs and techniques. She specializes in pieces from the 16th to early 20th centuries, and many of her products are imported from Europe from trusted buyers living in locations such as Italy and France with 30 to 40 years of experience in discovering the perfect pieces. Many of the items found in her store came from Gothic style palaces and churches. Nina relies on her experienced eye, but also stresses quality and workmanship when it comes to furniture selection—she has vowed to never associate herself with anything but superior materials, a promise she upholds to herself as well as her customers. While Nina acknowledges the hard work and experience imperative to success in the antiques industry, she also believes that pieces speak to her to allow her to act as their agent and send them to the right homes. This intuition, in tandem with Naderchi’s sophistication, dedication, and inspiration can be clearly seen in each piece she transforms into something unique and innovative. VIRTUALLY ALL OF PIECES ARE ONE-OF-A-KIND AND THE INVENTORY IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING, SO VISIT HER STORE TODAY!

Ethnic Comfort Foods

Fall is in the air. The weather is cooling down. We’re adding layers to our wardrobe. And we’re hungry for warm, hearty food. Specifically, we’re hungry for Comfort Food . . .

Nostalgic to a particular person or culture, comfort food means different things to different people. Conventional American comfort foods include meatloaf and mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, chili, and apple pie. However, as America becomes more diverse, so does the food. And with it, a new understanding of what comfort food means. With so many Asian cultures in Southern California, we’re fortunate that we can expand the list of conventional comfort foods to include some ethnic favorites such as Japanese ramen, Korean tofu soup, and Vietnamese pho.

Jinya Ramen Bar

Holy umami. This is no Top Ramen. This is Jinya Ramen Bar, a sleek, contemporary noodle shop that started in Japan and serves ramen, gyoza, and karaage (fried chicken). Jinya specializes in tonkotsu ramen that begins with a base of deep, rich pork broth extracted from pork bones that have been boiled for hours and then combined with loads of dashi, chewy noodles, tender pork, fresh bamboo shoots, spinach, green onion, cabbage, dried seaweed, and topped off with a drizzle of fragrant, black garlic oil. If you request fresh garlic, don’t be shocked when you are given fresh, whole cloves and a press to do it yourself. And don’t forget to tell them how you like it—hot, spicy, or mild—and note that the hot is underwhelming if you like spice. Jinya-RamenBar.com

BCD Tofu House

To most, tofu doesn’t spring to mind when thinking about comfort food; however, most have not tried the Korean tofu soup from BCD Tofu House. Servers start your meal with typical Korean BanChan, small dishes of fresh, steamed, and stir-fried vegetables and the beloved kimchi. But don’t fill up on the side dishes, because the star of the meal is the soup. Lean back when it arrives, because it’s not just served piping hot, but at a furious boil. 142

A customer favorite, the tofu seafood soup is full of silky, smooth, organic tofu, clams, oysters, and head-on shrimp. Before the soup cools too much, crack a raw egg into the broth, allowing it to cook to your liking, and then eat the mixture with a side of crispy rice. BCDTofu.com

Pho Thanh Lich

There are many Vietnamese restaurants in Orange County that serve a delicious pho, but one of the best is Pho Thanh Lich. Get past the décor— Christmas lights are strung across the dining room all year long—and focus on the soup. This is why you came anyway. As all good soups start with a rich broth, so does this: made from meaty bones, scented with star anise and a hint of cinnamon. The meat is extremely tender and floats in the fragrant broth along with thinly sliced white and green onions. Add fresh basil, bean sprouts, and cilantro, drizzle with your choice of sauces, such as Sriracha, plum, or soy, and finish with a squeeze of fresh lime. There’s nothing better than a bon vivant getting lost in a delicious, hot meal. You’re bound to feel like you have been transported back to an authentic Vietnamese kitchen in Saigon. theBeer Garden

bask@table | by heidi ristau

The Standard in downtown L.A. is the epitome of Hollywood hip, where the rooftop bar has been converted into one of the coolest beer gardens in town. In line with the hotel’s fun, affordable vibe, the garden is covered in “grass” and features game tables, as well as common tables. Instead of heavy, old fashioned German garb, the cheerful servers wear t-shirts screen-printed with lederhosen and dirndls. The Biergarten offers magnificent views of the city and mountains (particularly on a clear day) and serves traditional German food such as sausages, (currywurst, bratwurst, and weisswurst), salads (potato, cucumber, sauerkraut, red cabbage, and radish), freshly baked pretzels, and strudel. Beers include Bitburger Premium Pils; Licher Hefeweizen; and a Köstritzer dark beer. And the next time you’re in New York, be sure to visit the sister Biergarten under the High Line Park. StandardHotels.com/Downtown-LA Although you probably won’t find a beer garden at the beach in Europe, Venice’s On the Waterfront Café on the

boardwalk is a natural fit. With views of the Pacific and some of the best people watching in town, the Café offers an eclectic menu that includes everything from California classics, such as Caesar salad and Oriental chicken salad, to Swiss specialties such as raclette and curry rösti. Not only will you find domestic beers such as Coors Light and Samuel Adams, but you’ll also find German varieties that include Erdinger Dunkel, Weizenbier, and Bitburger Premium. WaterfrontCafe.com Steingarten LA is a California inspired beer garden that combines Los Angeles’ New World contemporary flair with Munich’s Old World country charm. The menu is heavy on sausage, with over 20 varieties that include many interesting meats enhanced with locally grown ingredients: Wild Boar and Berry, Venison Blueberry, Bison, and Elk. The ground sirloin burgers are all-natural, grass fed, with no hormones or antibiotics; try the Chef’s Choice with bacon, smoked mozzarella and Steingarten’s mustard sauce, the Golden Prize with herb roasted tomatoes, brie, caramelized

One of the highlights of Germany and Austria is the Beer Garden—an open air space with large communal tables, simple food, and great beer. With its year-round summer weather in Southern California, beer gardens are compatible with the outdoor lifestyle and are springing up across the region, bringing a bit of Bavaria to everyday life. Willkommen und Prost!

onions, and roasted garlic sauce or build your own from a number of gourmet toppings. There are over 100 beer selections, with an extensive bottled beer collection and 20 rotating craft beers. SteingartenLA.com For over 50 years, The Red Lion Tavern in Los Angeles has been a cozy neighborhood gasthaus and outdoor beer garden, serving a wide selection of traditional German food and beer. In 1963, a change in ownership brought a change to the tavern (from London Pub to German Gasthaus) and also a change to the menu. The new owner’s German wife allegedly taught her home-style German cooking to the head chef at the time, which serves as the basis for many of the delicious recipes still in use today. Beer garden specialties include typical German entrées such as half a rotisserie chicken, bratwurst, bockwurst, or currywurst and delectable sides like fried potatoes, sauerkraut, and spaetzle. The beer list reads like the beer tents at Munich’s Oktoberfest: Hofbräu, Warsteiner, Franziskaner, Köstritzer, and Spaten. RedLionTavern.net
