> Customer Testimonial Audi Mission Viejo Advertisement

Q&A

with Hannah Schwartz, Loyal Customer, Audi Mission Viejo

Q: What makes Audi Mission Viejo service department superior than others you have dealt with in the past? A: Their customer service. Q: What is the atmosphere and overall mood at Audi Mission Viejo? A: Relaxed and positive. Q: What makes you and Audi customer? A: Audi is superior to other cars (in my humble opinion). Audi already had the integrated phone/ipod system, when American cars still required a separate phone number in order to use an integrated phone system (OnStar). I had an Audi Q7 for five years and recently switched to the Q5 because I wanted a car that was a little smaller but still had all the technology/comfort that I was used to. Driving my Audi Q5 is pure joy; even a drive to Tuscon, Arizona is just a breeze in my car. I drove to Sacramento last weekend for a wedding. Everyone thought I was crazy for not flying, but I truly enjoy driving this car. I love the way it handles on mountain roads; more like a sports car than a “crossover SUV.” And then there is the panoramic sunroof, which is just amazing.

Q: Do you consider the quality of a car dealership’s maintenance department when purchasing a car? A: Yes. To find quality service for my Audi is always important. Q: Who is your service advisor and what makes him/or her stand out? A: Craig Abella. He is the best! Craig is responsive, stays on top of things and makes sure everything is done in a timely fashion. I love that I can just email him, and he takes care of everything. When I show up, Craig has the paperwork already done and the loaner car is ready for me. Q: Was your maintenance completed in a timely fashion and is there an open line of communication regarding the status of your vehicle throughout the process? A: Yes, it is always done in a timely fashion, and Craig always keeps me informed throughout the process. Q: Would you refer family and/or friends to Audi Mission Viejo? If so, why? A: Yes, I would definitely refer family and friends to Audi MV because of their outstanding customer service.

Craig Abella, Service Advisor Audi Mission Viejo “Craig Abella has been in automotive dealerships for over 25 years—as a technician, parts specialist, service manager, and service advisor. When asked what he loves about working at Audi Mission Viejo he responds, ‘though I could be in the back working on our clients’ Audis, I enjoy the face-to-face interaction and the passion that our clients share for the four rings. I’m proud to know nearly everyone who arrives in our driveway by first name—the relationships we’ve built together are what get me out of bed (before the sun rises) every day’. Craig has been part of the Audi Mission Viejo employee family for over seven years.”

Q: If you could describe Audi Mission Viejo service department in one word, what would it be? A: Outstanding!

Stocking Stuffer: “My kids grew up with stockings on their doors filled with silly stuff. To this day, they still love getting a stocking filled with the dumbest things possible.” Gift of Giving: “Our family is very much appreciative of what we have and we are sensitive to giving back to those who are not as lucky. I chair the Board of United Way and my family and I are very active in a host of holiday giving, including donating to charities, “adopting” a family each year where we spend a day shopping for them, and helping at schools and churches.” Holiday Habits: “We always do a festive dinner with the kids on my birthday (two weeks before Christmas) at one of the big hotels. It’s like a Christmas preview.”

Festive Functions: “We will make sure not to miss the Newport Harbor Boat Parade this year— it’s always a blast and gets me in the holiday spirit.” Seasonal Sweets: Even as a fitness trainer, Tony doesn’t say no to the sweeter side of the holidays: “I do enjoy my Coffee Sundae Pie and we all fight for seconds!” Garlands and Garb: “I can’t wait to break out my sweaters, sweat jackets, and my favorite Donna Karan Signature Leather Jacket.” Warm Thoughts: “The best gift I have received is my daughter, Isabella. She is a blessing to my whole family and makes me smile daily!”

Stocking Stuffer: “My in-laws, being the very generous gift-givers that they are, gave me a gold pendant, consisting of a gorgeous lightgreen amethyst surrounded by champagne diamonds. It is simply stunning with a timeless design; certain to become a family heirloom!” Gift of Giving: “The Laguna Beach School District is always very cognizant of the needs of the less fortunate. Thankfully, many teachers give the students opportunities to donate. One year we volunteered to deliver all the gifts that my son’s classmates had contributed to a family in Santa Ana; we felt like Santa’s elves.” Festive Functions: “The Fashion Island treelighting ceremony. It happens early in the season, but always gets my kiddos so excited!” Out with the Old, In with the New: “Out with the ‘winter blues’ and in with more exercise!”

2 Kirsten Prosser Garlands and Garb: With a strong background in fashion—Kirsten was a lead runway specialist for DKNY before founding the successful onQueStyle boutique in Corona del Mar—this Denmark native is often busy styling for the Grammys, hosting trunk shows, and designing her own clothing line. International Spotlight: Returning to her roots, Kirsten is now featured in the Danske Hollywoodfruer, a Danish reality show that highlights women of Danish descent residing in and around the Hollywood area. The show documents Kirsten’s life as a renowned fashion stylist in Newport Beach while portraying the hybrid culture of Danes living a luxurious and glamorous American lifestyle.

4 Brittany Martinez Out with the Old, In with the New: “I’m abandoning my old eating habits this year and I’m really going to embrace a healthier lifestyle—with a focus on yoga and pilates.” Festive Functions: “I love Disneyland during the holidays. I didn’t get a chance to go last year, so I am definitely going to go this December. I might just put a Disneyland pass on my holiday wish list.” Garlands and Garb: “I love when it starts getting cool enough to wear scarves and sweaters. My absolute favorite thing about my winter wardrobe, however, is getting to wear boots—if I could, I’d wear them all year round!”

5 Cyrus Antia Artistic Eye: While Cyrus specializes in product and fashion photography, this Orange County photographer also draws inspiration from his surroundings, with unique attention to reflective surfaces, interesting exteriors, and scenic cliffs. Winter Wanderings: Although his work involves spending lots of time in the studio, Cyrus can also be seen outdoors, venturing the country roads with his family, friends, and camera.

7 Stuart W. Volkow Gift of Giving: “This year, I would like to build a house with Habitat for Humanity. After recently watching the remodeling of my house going on for what seemed like years, I want to build a whole house in a day and see a family thrive!” Winter Wanderings: “This will be my first trip to Israel, one I should have taken in my 20s while it was still free! This trip feels like fate, and along with my friend, Larry Weinstein, I will be searching for the latest and greatest tech from the Holy Land.” Stocking Stuffer: Family is Stuart’s favorite gift of all time: “My son, Atticus, is learning to stand right about now. As he turns one this December 16th, time will take on a new meaning. What a difference a year makes!”

Winter Wanderings: “I’m getting ready to leave for three weeks, first to Istanbul and then on to Israel for some tech conferences, a fantastic time, and some great memories to warm me throughout this winter.” Warm Thoughts: “I’ve never considered winter as a long drudge, especially here in Southern California. With great holidays gathering all of our family and friends, there’s not a better place to be. It could be worse, we could be back in International Falls, Minnesota also known as Icebox of the Nation.”

Out with the Old, In with the New: “I plan to embrace the thought of ‘out with quantity and in with quality.’ I want to focus my time on things that are more worthwhile.” Winter Wanderings: “We always try to go to the mountains at least once during the season. It’s a charmed time to bundle up and our family loves a good, surprise snowball fight.” Garlands and Garb: “Cozy sweaters and stylish scarves are a thrill to wear in winter. I’m also on the lookout for a great pair of boots.”

9 Jenny Peters

Out with the Old and in With the New: “I would like to say goodbye to coffee but I would also like to remain a functioning human being, so I’m keeping the coffee and re-embracing old loves, such as theater, writing, and culinary experimentation.” Warm Thoughts: “However mild the weather winter season is in California, there definitely is a seasonal stagnancy that comes with the cooler months. In these times, I like to remind myself of the quote by T.S. Eliot: ‘Anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity’ which is a great saying for when you want to feel artsy while being completely neurotic.” Seasonal Sweets: “My favorite sweet thing that circulates during the holidays is a greater sense of compassion that is given away in large doses and second helpings when Christmas comes around.”

International Spotlight: As a photographer, Tony’s work has allowed him to travel around the globe to places such as Europe, The South Pacific, and the Americas. Gift of Giving: With a clear talent for photography, Tony doesn’t keep his art to himself. The photographer gives back to the community through workshops and classes given out of his studio in Corona del Mar. His teachings are then broadcasted on Zuga TV, where it can inspire students interested in photography around the world. Artistic Eye: Tony’s artistic style is a hybrid of his experience in fashion, photojournalism, and fine art, resulting in an innovative and unconventional aesthetic that brings his work to the foreground of fashion and wedding photography.

Stocking Stuffer: “Being a travel writer who circles the globe annually, my favorite gift is always a new pair of SmartWool compression socks, which my family gives me every year. Those long-haul flights are a snap when I wear them!” Holiday Habits: “My birthday is December 15, so each year, everyone gathers at my place for a party to celebrate all the events of the season: birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Festivus—all of it. It’s a blast and everyone is invited. The more the merrier!” Seasonal Sweets: “A glass of Silver Oak port paired with a piece of Enstrom’s dark chocolate almond bark is heaven on earth.”

10 Melinda Serra Festive Functions: “Even though my kids are now young adults, we still love driving through neighborhood streets on cool dark evenings to see all the holiday lights. It really puts you in a festive mood!” Warm Thoughts: “I truly believe that happiness is directly tied to being grateful, so I try to remind myself every day of all the blessings I have.” Stocking Stuffer: “I am not a big jewelry person, but 12 years ago, my husband gave me beautiful Mikimoto pearl earrings—they have been my go-to accessory ever since.”

13 Heidi Ristau Winter Wanderings: As someone that spends a good amount of time in the kitchen, Heidi’s culinary intuitions have been inspired by her travels to 20 countries, which include Morocco, France, and Singapore. Holiday Habits: Heidi enjoys spending time outdoors, which is no different during the holidays. She can often be found hiking, rollerblading, and paddle boarding. Seasonal Sweets: Growing up concocting her own recipes, Heidi’s best cooking advice is to keep it simple—“The simplest food and drink, done perfectly, are often the best.”

15 Virginia Fay Garlands and Garb: “I always dream of being able to layer this time of year. Although it seldom happens quite how I imagine, I still love to pull out the cozy sweaters, fun scarves, and, most of all, boots of every kind!” Holiday Habits: “After all the gifts have been opened and dinner is over, my favorite holiday tradition is watching It’s a Wonderful Life with my family on Christmas Day. It’s such a lovely way to unwind, and despite occasional protests from other family members, I never get sick of this classic movie!” Seasonal Sweets: “Christmas cookies will always have a special place in my heart. I love baking year-round, but there’s something irreplaceable about making family recipes with my mom during Christmas time and filling the house with the scent of gingersnaps and peppermint candy cane cookies.”

And now for something completely different: no, not Monty Python— Teatro ZinZanni, an amazing night of cirque, comedy, cabaret, and a fivecourse gourmet meal inside a luxury tent on the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center Plaza. After a decade of success in Seattle and San Francisco, this “nightclub of your dreams” presents a fun and wacky evening to be shared with friends in the troupe’s 100-year-old Belgian Spiegeltent (aka tent) with culinary fare by Patina Catering.

Through March 24 The Los Angeles County Museum of Art offers up two eclectic exhibitions: Robert Mapplethorpe: XYZ and Stanley Kubrick (through June 30). Cutting-edge American photographer Mapplethorpe’s X, Y, and Z Portfolios of 39 black and white photographs amply display his fine art/contemporary works taken a few years before his death. Flowers, homosexuals, and African-American men make for an engrossing—if not simply odd—photographic mix. In the Art of Americas Building, a sweeping exhibition covers the life works of groundbreaking director Stanley Kubrick. Through annotated scripts, set models, props, cameras, and more, the exhibit reevaluates this 21st century filmmaker extraordinaire.

Following roses and champagne what can you do to take Valentine’s Day over the top of Silky Smooth Mountain? What else than a trip to Segerstrom Concert Hall for an evening with Kenny G. After picking up the saxophone at the age of 10, and quickly rising through the ranks playing in Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra at the age of 17 while still in high school, Kenny G fuses R&B, Latin, jazz, and pop into one very small saxophone. Selling over 75 million albums worldwide, Mr. G drives down from his home in Malibu to join the Pacific Symphony.

The ghost ship cursed to sail the oceans forever from Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman is brought back to life by James Conlon, a skilled Wagner interpreter, in a new production of this classic staged by Nikolaus Lehnhoff and presented by the LA Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The production runs an epic 2 hours and 20 minutes without intermission, so make sure to eat your citrus before the show in order to stave off a case of scurvy.

birds of a feather

With wedding season fast approaching, bask asked real newlyweds Armen & Iren to share their story with us. We got all the wedding details, from what went into preparing for their big day to why they chose Hummingbird Nest Ranch to say “I do.”

34

Armen and Iren met at a very young age and remained close friends for years. But deep down, Armen always knew that Iren would be his wife someday. Following a decade of friendship, they made it official and confirmed what all of their friends and family secretly thought for years— that they were simply made for each other. After Armen popped the question, they embraced the new chapter in their lives by spending three years planning their perfect wedding, down to every last detail. It’s no wonder that the nature-loving couple picked the hidden gem known as Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley to be their dream wedding location. Iren and Armen just couldn’t resist Hummingbird Nest Ranch’s stunning Spanish architecture and lovely outdoor scenery. The couple walked down a rose petal-strewn aisle in front of more than 500 guests in a romantic outdoor ceremony that boasted elegance with an artistic touch. The breathtaking reception was decorated with pastel colored roses, tulips, spray roses, peonies, and a gold-detailed layered cake adorned with sugar cameos made by Cake Divas. Not only did Armen and Iren plan a beautiful ceremony but they also know how to throw a party—their guests didn’t leave the reception until five in the morning! Family and friends celebrated the momentous occasion with live entertainment and danced the night away on the shiny gold dance floor. HummingBirdNestRanch.com

Sun-Kissed Ceremony: Most brides would call the process of planning their wedding a temporary madness. For San Diego couple Lindsay Kroener & Danny Kurz, it was a joy ride. bask Magazine got a sneak peek into the wedding narrative of this down-to-earth pair, from high school romance to lifetime love.

“This is the first day of my life,” the words of Bright Eyes’ notable single, encapsulated the sentiment of the day as it was reinvented and crooned by the brother of the bride during a special wedding ceremony at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego. July 14, 2012 marked an exceptional event that had the whole venue buzzing. A long-awaited marriage was finally underway as 160 guests entered the Inn’s intimate courtyard. The bride, adorned in a beautiful white Amsale gown, took everyone’s breath away—not to mention the groom, whose smiling eyes clearly betrayed his unabashed admiration of his bride-to-be. To many, San Diego is famous primarily for its beaches, burritos, and sun-kissed blondes, but to some, like our newly married couple, it is also a place to grow up and fall in love. The pair, both raised in this coastal city, met and began dating during their senior year at La Jolla Country Day High School. While college years found some time apart for these high school sweethearts, the threads of their relationship could not be severed. After 12 years in each other’s lives, Danny took Lindsay on a hike that neither would ever forget. Against a backdrop of Temescal Canyon in Los Angeles, Danny got down on one knee in front of an unsuspecting Lindsay. “It was really private and intimate,” recalled Lindsay of the proposal, which is largely characteristic of this down-to-earth pair, “Afterwards, we went out for Mexican food and stayed at the Shutters Hotel in LA for a few days.” The simplicity and sincerity of the proposal became a running theme when planning for the wedding. “I was really laidback about it and didn’t want it to be too stuffy or too themed,” explained Lindsay when asked about her inspiration for the wedding décor, which featured pastels, soft patterns, and seashells. With active participation from their family and friends, the wedding harbored a deeply personal element that made it truly heartwarming. Along with her brother’s special performance, the ceremony was officiated by the bride’s cousin, and to top it off, the bride and groom cut into their wedding cake with a Kurz family heirloom—a sword from Danny’s grandfather’s time in the military. “It was great to see everyone we loved together,” beamed Lindsay, reflecting on the sentimental atmosphere of the day. With 12 years of love and friendship heaped at their feet, Etta James’ “At Last” serenaded the pair as they danced their first dance as a married couple, surrounded by their nearest and dearest. Lindsay and Danny can now be found in Los Angeles, hiking the trails or surfing the waves in Santa Monica, and most importantly, living happily ever after.

Her inspiration to pursue a career in the wedding industry may have been typical—“I think what attracted me to the wedding industry is what attracts most people: a love of pretty things, to be able to work with people in the happiest times of their lives, and to celebrate and throw parties”—but the niche she created for herself is anything but. Harmony Walton created the Bridal Bar at the tender age of 24, and what has followed is a success story for both her and the countless confused brides who turn to Bridal Bar to help make sense of the endless options involved in wedding planning. Prompted by her work at a wedding magazine, Walton came to the troubling realization that even in such a specialized career, she felt unable to give dependable recommendations to friends for photographers and other wedding necessities.

She realized that, “There should be a way for vendors to have interaction with brides,” and subsequently developed a business model that allowed her to create that connection. So what exactly is the bar? “[We’re a] bridal concierge service, an event library…we bring weddings to life in that high-touch environment. I tell brides we assist, we don’t plan…we don’t do budgets or timelines, [but] we do a good overall snapshot.” Walton and her team are happy to help you select the best wedding planner for your needs, but the function of the bar is decidedly not to plan your wedding for you; rather, it is to give you the tools and the assistance you need to make educated selections with minimum stress. Walton describes the philosophy behind creating this experience as “high-touch, not high-tech. What I feel like is sometimes forgotten is that personal touch that couples need—a calming voice, an expert to bounce ideas off of, a personal shopper-like experience…we do just that. The Bridal Bar in-store approach may seem a bit old school but it’s what makes us different and special in my opinion. We’re like your best friend when you need it most…we’re as hands on or off as the client wants, all very personal and individual with the attention that every bride or groom deserves.” Brides of every style and budget flock to Bridal Bar for this personalized attention, including notable names such as Katherine Heigl and Katie Holmes. And the philosophy is evident from the moment you step foot in the shop: greeted by a homey atmosphere with details of glitz and glam, brides are immediately put at ease and pampered with champagne, goodie bags, and undivided attention. From there, the experience is tailored to each bride’s needs and desires. The whole experience is made even more enjoyable by Walton’s impossible-to-ignore enthusiasm and genuine desire to help both vendors and brides achieve their goals. “I love after a bride and her sisters [or] mother leave and [they] take a deep breath and say ‘ok, I feel better about this.’ I really like that feeling that they’ll sleep a little better at night knowing that what is right for them is going to be right for their wedding.” And linking a trusted vendor with a nervous bride just sweetens the deal: “It’s like sending your family out into the world and seeing them succeed at what they do best,” Walton says.

COOL FINDS 1 HEATHER FISH SUNDANCE RESORT, UTAH “One of my family’s favorite winter destinations is Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort. Tucked away in the beautiful Utah mountains, its qualities reflect that of Mr. Redford’s personality: private, rustic charm, handsome, and au naturel! The snow is always amazing for skiing and snowboarding, the food impeccable, and the overall ambiance, settling. The simple, yet yummy homemade suckers on wooden sticks are a highlight of our trip. And I will forever covet the colossal painting of a herd of wild horses hanging in the resort’s Foundry Grill.”

2 ROBERT PALMER SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO “Santa Fe over the Christmas holidays is magical. The entire town is often lightly painted with a shallow layer of snow, the adobe structures are all adorned with luminaries, and the smell of burning wood and southwestern spices permeate the air—often with a beautiful moon overhead. From the amazing Anasazi hotel, with its kiva fireplaces and amazing design, you are footsteps from the traditional town plaza, the shops, restaurants, and galleries of downtown, and then a beautiful walk up the canyon for a tour of the Southwest’s finest art galleries— only to stop at Geronimo at the end of the road for some of the finest food in the country. And no trip is complete without a visit to the Asian inspired spa, Ten Thousand Waves, including renting a private spa, sauna, and outdoor deck to overlook the mountains and town below.”

3 ARIANA ESPIRITU REYES LONDON, ENGLAND “My favorite winter destination that stretches beyond the United States is London, England. I’m not very subtle when it comes to my holiday spirit and neither is London. Without that little pre-party called Thanksgiving to distract from December 25th, Oxford Street, the city’s mecca for Christmas shopping, turns into the inside of a snow globe come the beginning of November. While Covent Garden is my favorite neighborhood to peek into all the window displays, the Christmas-themed festivals and markets trump any cute, storybook neighborhood London has to offer. There is something about crisp air and warm treats and giant Ferris wheels looming in the background of Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland that is very heartwarmingly antiquated and also falls in line with the same spirit of the very age-old tradition of Christmas. I love London during any season but there is a completely magical air about this town during the holidays that has only a little bit to do with Harry Potter.”

4 HEIDI RISTAU VIENNA, AUSTRIA “Vienna, Austria is an especially lovely place to visit at Christmastime. The city is a winter wonderland, blanketed in snow and twinkling lights. My favorite part is visiting one of the many Christkindlmarkts to shop for handmade gifts, while drinking a mug of Glühwein (mulled wine) and eating a freshly fried potato pancake. Vienna is a city of music, so I also try to catch a Christmas concert at the Musikverein or Augustinerkirche. Additionally, the city has some of the best coffee in the world, so when I’m ready for a break, I find one of the many art deco cafés in which to relax and enjoy a café mélange.”

5 AMY ADAMS CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO & ROSEWOOD SAND HILL, MENLO PARK

Sparkling lights, blankets of snow, and family quests create a brilliant occasion to head out of town. This issue, our writers share their favorite fêtes during the winter season.

“After the Thanksgiving festivities, I love to take the day and drive up to the Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park. It’s roughly a six-hour drive, but I take my time and enjoy making little stops along the way. Perfect anytime of the year, this resort feels like my home away from home. The cool, salty climate and beach-like structures remind me of home, but what makes this place truly special is the landscape and location. Surrounded by pine trees and only footsteps away from Stanford, I love waking up each morning to the perfect mixture of a salty climate combined with the fresh scent of pine, followed by a leisurely bike ride into the village for breakfast. It’s no-fuss luxury and relaxation—and a perfect way to gear up for the hustle and bustle of Christmas. After the holiday, I can’t resist a trip to the Esperanza in Mexico. Only a two-hour flight and yet I feel like I’m worlds away from home and my everyday routine—exactly where I want to be. This place is a dream during the winter months—80 degree temperatures, perfectly manicured private beaches, gourmet food, and very exclusive. When I’m not enjoying the spa, I’m enjoying a massage on the beach or reading poolside.”

“My husband and I spent our first Christmas together in Lucerne, Switzerland, and it continues to be one of my favorite winter holiday destinations. Dusted with snow, the covered, medieval Chapel Bridge over Lake Lucerne is picturesque and perfect for a romantic stroll, complete with swans preening below. We love browsing the Christmas markets, which have a magical quality that envelops you warmly, while spoiling you with the local confections and heady aromas of mulled wine. I can’t think of anything better than snuggling up by the fire and watching the snow fall from Mt. Pilatus with a warm mug of Glühwein!”

7 BRITTANY MARTINEZ PARIS, FRANCE “There’s nothing like spending Christmastime in Paris. The sparkling display of lighted trees on the Champs-Elysées is so beautifully surreal—it feels like a scene taken right out of a romantic movie. There is something even more magical about the tourist destinations in Paris during the winter season—ice-skating, the illuminated Eiffel Tower, and my favorite spot, the Luxembourg Gardens. It’s actually one of the best times of year to visit Paris because it’s less crowded so you can really connect with the city and the locals. And even though it’s so cold outside, it’s nice to experience a real white Christmas, all bundled up in layers while staying warm with hot chocolate.”

“Despite the fact that I live in sunny Southern California, when it comes to winter travel I like to head to even warmer climates, like Down Under, to Australia, where it actually is summer to our winter. Once there, I am torn between my main passions, scuba diving and wine tasting. So I usually hit beautiful Sydney for a few days, then it’s off to Queensland, where I make my home base in the pretty little town of Port Douglas. I love the lively artist’s enclave there, the famed 4-mile beach, the sophisticated culinary scene, and—most importantly to me—the fast boats that head out to the Great Barrier Reef each morning, for a full day on and in the water. That’s the place I love, which teems with underwater life, from white-tip sharks and huge sea turtles to a dazzling array of tropical fish and coral reefs. And the water is warm and clean, too! Once I’ve had my fill of diving various sites on the reef, I hop on a plane down to Adelaide, where nearby the Barossa Valley awaits. It’s a heavenly way to spend some winter days.”

SAVORING

THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

If you’re like me, just the word “Provence” sets the synapses in your brain snapping away. Visions of sun-dappled hillsides covered in grape vines dance through my head, enmeshed with gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea, cobblestoned streets winding through ancient villages, and tables groaning with locally made cheeses, pâtés, charcuterie, and—of course—wines. Happily, when I recently made my way to the “Sud de France” and Provence, everything I had imagined really did come true. En.SunFrance.com

56

To get there, catch a nonstop flight to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris from LAX on Air Tahiti Nui, which offers a French Polynesian twist to your trip. Their businessclass seats are extremely comfortable, and you’ll rest easy on the overnight flight after a meal including Maitai Tahitian Punch, tasty duck confit, and fine French wines. Keep right on going to Orly Airport and catch a quick flight to Perpignan. There, you’ll need to pick up a rental car, as a special part of this adventure is driving east to west across the Mediterranean basin, meandering from coastal city to mountain winery. Or if you’d rather have an Englishspeaking chauffeur, Odyssee Bleue is

happy to pick you up and be your trip-long designated driver. OdysseeBleue.com You’re in the region called the LanguedocRoussillon, where numerous wine-producing areas (originally known as AOCs, now shifting to the new moniker AOP, Appellation d’Origine Protégée) have been creating wonderful vintages for centuries. Make your home base for a few days at Chateau de Riell, a castle tucked into the Pyrenees Mountains above Perpignan. With only 12 rooms, five cottages, and ancient Roman thermal baths, this Relais & Chateaux gem is a haven of luxurious relaxation. Chateauderiell.com/en

Head south to the beautiful seaside village of Collioure and soak up the morning sun on the skinny strip of beach looking out at the iconic lighthouse-turned-church, then meander along “Le chemin du Fauvisme.” That’s the path dotted with reproductions of the Matisse and Derain works painted here in the early 20th century, in the place where Fauvism flourished.

the grapes right in the middle of the narrow cobblestone street. Domaine-Pietri-Geraud.com.

Have a leisurely lunch at Le Neptune restaurant, with its expansive views of the bay and the sea beyond. Try one of their delicious seafood dishes paired with a Domaine Piétri-Géraud Collioure Rosé, a classic Mediterranean meal.

Devote the next day to wine, with visits to some of the other fascinating AOP regions in the Roussillon. Cruise over to the Maury, where Mas Amiel Winery produces fine vintages amid some very harsh conditions, and still uses horses to till between the wines. Their Vin Doux Naturel Oxydatif wines are heady sweet wines that are left outdoors in glass demijohn bottles for a year, then transferred to giant oak casks and left for 10 to 40 (or more) years.

Then stop in to Olivier Bajard Patisserie for a mouthwatering chocolate dessert; take those tiny tidbits of heaven along and visit the Domaine Piétri-Géraud Winery, located right in the middle of town. Beyond that lush Rosé, they’ve got some of the region’s best Banyuls AOP dessert wines (the Cuvée du Soleil 2006 is spectacular) and if you happen to visit during harvest, you’ll see the amazing sight of that family of winemakers unloading

Don’t miss a stop at Paulilles Bay, where three protected beaches offer up idyllic seaside moments. Rent a sea kayak and explore all three coves in this magical place.

The result is like nothing I had ever tasted before. The Millésime 1969 offered lush flavors of caramel, salt, and eucalyptus, for example. Masamiel.fr

Closer to the coast in Rivesaltes is Maison Cazes, a family-run winery since 1895. Now fully organic and biodynamic, the winery is the largest of its kind in France. Their 14 award-winning wines are a yummy mix of dry (the Le Credo red blend is delicious) and naturally fortified (especially the Rivesaltes Aimé Cazes), sweet bottlings that make for a perfect afternoon of sipping.

Go on into the evening there at La Table d’Aimé, the winery’s top-notch restaurant, and your day will be complete. Cazes-Rivesaltes.com/en Next, move on to the Languedoc by settling in to your own villa at the elegant Chateau Les Carrasses (LesCarrasses.com), located near Narbonne. Take a dip in the infinity pool, ride a bike through the vineyards, then head for Gérard Bertrand’s Chateau L’Hospitalet to sample the most-lauded wines in the region. Try the beautiful Cigalus white blend, a luscious mélange of peach, apricot, and citrus flavors, and the La Forge, a big red Syrah-Carignan blend that is an intoxicatingly dense dark-cherry mouth bomb. At Domaines Paul Mas in Montagnac, do a tasting and then have dinner with an Arrogant Frog. The “Frog” is their popular “mascot” wine line, one of ten different brands they produce. Japanese chef Taichi Megurikami is a revelation at their chic new restaurant Côté Mas. He serves locally sourced, mouthwatering dishes like Monkfish Tail and Rack of Aveyron Lamb. PaulMas.com Finally, head on into the heart of Provence, the home of outstanding Rosé wines and much more. Stay in Aix-en-Provence at the La Villa Gallici Hotel (VillaGallici.com) or go for a sublime countryside experience at the lovely Chateau de Berne (ChateauBerne.com). Either way, plan to visit Chateau d’Esclans (CavesDEsclans.com) and nearby Chateau Sainte Roseline (SainteRoseline.com/en), two of Provence’s best wine producers. Taste the famed Garrus and Les Clans Rosé wines at d’Esclans and check out the gorgeous chateau that anchors the property; then drink in the beauty of the chapel at Sainte Roseline, devoted to the winery’s namesake. That chapel boasts a Matisse mosaic

and the actual body of the saint; nearby, this hip winery makes the renowned La Chapelle de Sainte Roseline Cru Classé and has constantly changing art installations. Meander through the streets of Aix, shopping the outdoor markets for all things French Provencal, marveling at the ancient Aix Cathedral, and sipping an aperitif at Les Deux Garcons, where native son Paul Cézanne hung out. Follow in his footsteps and visit his studio nearby. Take a little trip to St. Tropez to see that beautiful village, but be warned: traffic is a nightmare in the summer months there. Atelier-Cezanne.com/Anglais Once you’ve finally gotten your fill of this wonderful part of the world, return to Paris via Marseille Provence Airport and if you decide to stay a day or two there, put Restaurant Le Quinzième on your must-do list. Men@Work:

Rick Fahmie Founder of the innovative design firm Kitchen Expo, Rick Fahmie shares the story of his beginnings in furniture design, his philosophy on creating one-of-a-kind pieces, and why he loves California.

POB.PRINT.indd 2

11/19/12 12:35 PM

bask: You’ve been building and designing furniture since the age of 12—how did that passion originate? Rick Fahmie: I became great friends with a shop teacher when I was in seventh grade; he was a fabulous furniture builder and he saw I had a great interest and talent for building furniture. So for two years I spent most of my time in the wood shop. I got my work done quick, and then, since I was twiddling my thumbs in school, the teachers let me go down to wood shop. I loved building furniture; my mom still has the furniture I built for her when I was 12 years old. b: What kind of furniture did you build at that time? RF: I built coffee tables, end tables, dry sink hutches…I also did a custom interior for a van when I was 17; instead of [being] full of carpet, it was full of wood with hand carvings. I entered in van shows and I won every van show until I left for California [when] I was 19. I came to California and started working for a kitchen company and I was there for four years doing fieldwork for them, then two years in design, and I won a lot of national design awards for kitchen design. Then I started my own company at age 25. b: What prompted you to found your own business at such a young age? RF: I got tired of people telling me you can’t do this, it’s too different, it’s so unusual, nobody’s going to buy that, nobody’s going to want this, it’s too out there. I got tired of doing maple and oak and pine kitchens. I wanted different, unique; something nobody’s ever done before. b: What made you want to come out to California? RF: The weather! I asked a vocational school teacher when I was in high school, where’s the best weather in the country? He said oh, San Diego, no question, because you can water ski one day and snow ski the next day, and those are two of my other passions. So I packed up my custom van and my brother put his motorcycle in the back of the van and we drove [from New Jersey] across the country. We stopped at a bunch of states along the way to see if we liked any of them, and it took about six weeks to get here because we had a lot of family to visit along the way. Thanksgiving Day, I remember driving 80 through the desert up along the 5 and saw Mission Bay and said, oh, this is a great place to live. So we stopped here for Thanksgiving Day and fell in love with it, and never went back.

b: What prompted your interest in kitchen design specifically? RF: I just loved cabinetry. I love staining something. I love taking a raw piece of wood that you wouldn’t look twice at and then either staining it or finishing it and having that wood come alive; it really just comes alive in depth. I knew there really wasn’t a lot of money to be made in furniture, so I got into the kitchen business and really enjoyed taking a standard kitchen and ripping it apart and ripping walls out of it and giving it curves and shapes and angles and all of a sudden giving it something nobody’s ever seen before. There aren’t many kitchen people that do curves or angles…I’m talking about giving the whole kitchen movement, and shape. If you look at beautiful cars, if you look at beautiful women, they all have movement and shape. It’s what gives so many things interest. b: How would you describe the style of the design you use in your own home? RF: Well, I invented a door for my own house…it’s called the Brielle door, named after my daughter. I’m the only one in the world that can make this door. I do compound curves on veneers; I can take a veneer and shape it and bend it in two different directions, and it won’t crack. I did it in my house [first] to make sure it wouldn’t be a problem, it wouldn’t crack and it would work properly. So my house is a guinea pig, usually. Once it worked out well, now I do it for people all over the world. b: How do you expect Kitchen Expo to grow and develop in the future? RF: What I’d like to do someday is work with a big enough manufacturer to take my ideas and thoughts and expand on them, [so] I can take my designs and distribute them to other kitchen dealers throughout the country. But, I’m having a hard time finding a big enough manufacturer that wants to change and do it my way as opposed to the same way everybody else does. I’ve been pursuing it for a while, but haven’t had any luck yet. It’s just too different, too high quality for most manufacturers. But I’ll find one eventually; I just need to spend more time on it. I’m so busy in my day-to-day business that it’s hard to break away and find manufacturers that want to do things the right way, a different way.

“I got tired of doing maple and oak and pine kitchens. I wanted different, unique; something nobody’s ever done before.”

Beauty and a Beast of an Engine The much-anticipated resurrection of the British powerhouse’s crown jewel has finally arrived. It’s easy to realize why the Vanquish is the flagship of the Aston Martin fleet just by looking at the brand’s improved signature “vertical horizontal” architecture or hearing the growl of the 5.9 liter 12 cylinder power plant which pushes out an impressive 565 horse power. The thoroughbred sports car’s exterior is constructed primarily from carbon fiber, which sits atop a bonded aluminum monocoque frame, allowing it to shed some pounds while sustaining stiff and solid chassis. A perfectly balanced 50/50 weight distribution ensures the Vanquish performs as if it were on rails and the intimidating exhaust key note evokes a sense of doubt to any oncoming competitors.

top picks in luxurious rides Spot on Sedan Audi stands tall and quite impressive amongst the full sized luxury sedans in its class. The brand exudes a fresh, modern take on luxury inside and out. With a range of options, you can customize this luxury automobile to your unique specifications. Under the hood you have a selection: the high performance S8 model, the standard 4.2 V8, and, for the fuel-efficient buyer, Audi just added the 3.0 Supercharged V6 to the menu. The A8’s stability on the road is credited to its legendary “quattro” all wheel drive, which contributes to performance and safety all at the same time. The sedan is manufactured in two different body sizes— standard, or, for someone craving a bit more room and a reclining back seat feature, they provide the A8L edition as well.

Off Road Elegance The complete redesign of the fourth generation all terrain top dog sheds 700 pounds by implementing the first of its kind all-aluminum body, making it 39 percent lighter than its predecessor in an effort to improve fuel economy. Although much lighter, the Range Rover maintains a cloud-like ride supplied by the fourcornered air suspension. The interior cabin is modern and pure, incorporating Range Rover’s distinct design cues but with a fresh and very contemporary treatment. Instead of fighting the trend, cable companies have jumped on board by allowing subscribers to access premium content via the Internet at their leisure with products such as Comcast’s XFINITY. Second screen applications for tablets and Smartphones have turned your devices into on-demand TVs. HBO GO and MAX GO are excellent examples. Load them on your iPad and you gain access to nearly all of HBO and Cinemax’s premium content over the Internet. Also worth checking out are the apps from the broadcast nets: ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS. They offer much of their lineup for free and a plethora of supplemental content. You’ll find that many of your favorite shows have their own apps. Being news junkies, two of our favorites are 48 Hours and 60 Minutes. The TED app can also be addictive for us lifelong learners. IntoNow and GetGlue are apps that allow viewers to “check in” to shows while watching them, discovering extra, synchronized content, and shared experiences and opinions online. Be sure to introduce your kids to the Disney XD app, or better yet, the Khan Academy app with its amazing video tutorials for K-12 and beyond on almost any subject. Netflix still dominates paid Internet subscription services, but with Amazon Prime’s recent addition of the EPIX library

Hulu+ can round out your 24/7 on-demand TV habit with a giant selection of primetime broadcast and premium CATV content. ESPN SportsCenter Anchor Neil Everett emceed the gala, and Jim Nye led an exciting live auction that included a day with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, who also was in attendance with his wife. “It’s truly overwhelming to see such an outpour of generosity from the community for so many families that are in crisis,” said Miracles for Kids board chairman, Kenneth Gerdau. The evening was also a celebration of the organization’s supporters which included the longtime support of the Sosa Family, whose generosity did not go unnoticed. Guests enjoyed tea-based liqueur cocktails courtesy of Tatratea and noshed on ahi tuna poke, filet mignon, and Dungeness crab cakes from Tommy Bahama Island Grille. As they mixed and mingled, models walked around the salon outfitted in OnQueStyle designer dresses and dazzling jewels from Gail Jewelers. To create an elegant, yet warm and comfortable space, use a formal arrangement with informal items. Whether it’s bottled spring water or coveted French champagne, utilize your wall fountain as a festive ice bucket. Turn an underutilized tiered fountain into a beautiful and festive arrangement with the season’s showiest plants for the highest impact, or use an array of richly textured plants for a more subtle approach. Either way, a little ingenuity will help your well-planned celebration or gettogether look effortlessly chic. Giving gifts is always a special occasion. Form and function are re-imagined by using a richly textured burlap ribbon around a simple box. Use a starfish or shell to adorn the top of a gift in lieu of a bow to highlight the natural beauty of nature. Simple creative curiosities will set your home far apart from the mundane. Greet family and friends before they pass through your front door with a welcoming, festive planter filled with gorgeous green Granny Smith apples. These apples, found at your local market, will last for weeks. This may seem counterintuitive, but using natural items creates warmth, adds a dimension of richness, and has limitless possibilities.

bask@table | by heidi ristau

bask booked a table at some of the best restaurants in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange County to get a taste of all Southern California has to offer. This helpful guide is sure to have the pesky picky-eater and adventurous out-oftowner come together at one table and dig in for the holidays.

los angeles “Best-Kept Secret Garden” Little Door

Drive too fast down 3rd Street and you can easily miss the Little Door with its entrance behind a vine-covered wall concealed from passersby. Once inside, you’re immediately transported to a romantic, secret garden in the heart of the Mediterranean, with flickering candles and cozy nooks filled with downy pillows. The interior feels just as warm with rustic wood tables and floors, lambskin rugs, and an ambient glow from the red, blue, and green-tinted windows that surround each room. The food is equally inspired, with the chef purchasing his organic produce from local farmers, creating a healthy, simple menu with fresh seasonal ingredients and spices to capture the essence of the region. Standouts include smoked garlic-crusted rack of lamb with Madeira wine and mustard and goat cheese sauce, on a bed of farro and green lentil risotto and the roasted wild cod with spicy manila clams, roasted lipstick peppers and oregano, atop a sunchoke potato purée. TheLittleDoor.com

“Best Way to See the City” Soho House

A private member’s club like no other, Soho House West Hollywood sits atop Sunset Boulevard and has some of the most breathtaking views in all of Los Angeles. The terrace garden is particularly lovely with its tranquil, indoor pond and olive trees with hanging lanterns that line enormous glass windows, exposing panoramic views of the nearby hills. The eclectic furniture is arranged in a way that creates smaller, private spaces emanating a cozier, at-home atmosphere. The quinoa salad is a dream— full of fresh vegetables and herbs and just a touch of salty feta, an especially delicious combination after all the rich holiday food. SohoHouseWH.com

“Best Place to Share” Campanile

“Best-Kept Secret Garden” Little Door

130

Housed in a historic 1929 building that was originally built for Charlie Chaplin, Campanile serves some of the best brunch in Los Angeles. The restaurant is light and bright, with soaring ceilings and lots of windows that allow the sun to stream in. It’s a great place for large gatherings, where families and friends can come together to catch up on each other’s lives while sitting around a large table with plenty of delicious food. Take your time and start your meal by

sharing a basket of house-made pastries. The menu features both breakfast and lunch dishes, including the in-between option of a breakfast sandwich made of eggs and prosciutto on wheat toast with arugula and parsley pesto to cut the richness. CampanileRestaurant.com

“Best Way to Eat Healthy” A Votre Sante

The casual, health-conscious Los Angeles lifestyle is epitomized at A Votre Sante. This charming restaurant, equipped with a lovely patio, is nestled on San Vicente, right next to the Brentwood Country Mart, and offers a wide variety of organic, healthy food that focuses on the flavors of California, Mexico, and the Mediterranean. While the restaurant is not strictly vegetarian, the meatless entrées are some of their best, and some of the best in LA as well. Not only are they delicious, but also pleasing to the eye. Try the healthy version of chilaquiles, with a toasted corn tortilla, garden burger, ranchero sauce, two over easy eggs, black beans, cool guacamole, feta cheese, and spicy jalapeno. AVotreSanteLA.com

Orange County “Best Artsy Date Night” Rothschild’s

Rothschild’s is a quaint, family owned and operated, fine Italian restaurant in Corona del Mar village, which features the work of local Orange County artists in the restaurant on a rotating basis. Evenings are particularly romantic in the dimly lit dining room, making it a quintessential date spot. Italian specialties include the Linguine Maremonte with tender crab and shrimp in a mushroom and garlic cream sauce, and the Vitello Rothschild’s with veal medallions sautéed in white wine, lemon, and herb butter, and topped with imported lingonberries. It’s also a wonderful place for dessert—sit at the bar and enjoy a delicious liqueur-filled cappuccino to accompany your tiramisu or crème brulée. RothschildsRestaurant.com

“Best Eats on the Beach” The Beachcomber

There is nothing like the view at The Beachcomber in Crystal Cove, where you dine in a small, open-air restaurant just steps from the beach, surrounded by restored cottages circa 1935-1955. The lunch menu focuses on American and seafood-inspired specialties, including

www.baskmagazine.com

Bask@Table.PRINT.indd 2

“Best Eats on the Beach” The Beachcomber

sandwiches, salads, and fish tacos. The Portobello Sandwich features tangy, provolone cheese melted on a grilled portobello cap with organic baby spinach, roasted tomatoes, and macadamia nut pesto served on a rosemary bun. A Beachcomber favorite is the Ultimate Salmon Melt, a thymeroasted salmon filet that has been flaked and mixed with a lemon herb aioli, topped with slices of aged white cheddar cheese, grilled on artisan French bread and served with a cup of tomato bisque. There is often a wait, but don’t fret, there is a bar in the back where you can enjoy a drink, or take a stroll on the beach and check out the local surfers catching a wave. TheBeachcomberCafe.com

“Best Historic Brunch” Ramos House

“Best Royal Treatment for the Holidays” Five Crowns

As a little girl, Christmastime meant dressing up in a red velvet dress and black Mary Janes and having dinner at Five Crowns. The food was secondary to the pure Christmas spirit that filled the halls of the old Tudor style house, which featured ornament covered trees, twinkly lights on pine garlands and carolers singing classic holiday songs. Although the staffs’ uniforms have since been updated, this same spirit continues today, as Five Crowns remains a must-see during the holidays (make sure to make a reservation weeks in advance). While you wait for dinner, start with a classic cocktail and sit by the fire at the SideDoor gastropub within the restaurant. For dinner, enjoy prime rib with silky mashed potatoes, bacon-flecked creamed spinach, Yorkshire pudding, and a dollop of horseradish whipped cream. LawrysOnline.com/Five-Crowns

Five Crowns Salad

photo: Emet Martinez Photography

Located in the historic Los Rios District in downtown San Juan Capistrano, Ramos House was originally built in 1881 by the Aguilar Family, who, rumors speculate, would use part of the home as a hideout (in what is today’s wine cellar) for vaqueros escaping their captors. In 1994, Ramos House was restored as a home to the current chef/owner and a restaurant that features American food with a Southern influence. Brunch is a prix fixe menu that includes a beverage and both small and large plates. The famous Ramos House Soju Bloody Mary is almost a meal in itself, and is made with fresh tomato juice and loads of freshly grated horseradish, finished

with pickled green beans and a cracked crab claw. Make sure at least one person at the table orders the beignets: slightly sweet, crispy balls of fried dough that sit on a plate of chunky cinnamon apples. Then move on to a crab cake salad where the seafood cakes sit atop a pile of mixed greens and are drizzled with a slightly spicy, smoky chili remoulade sauce. RamosHouse.com

“Best Vegetarian Food Truck” Seabirds

The menu at Seabirds changes often, but this fresh, local, organic, vegan food is always inventive and delicious. The chefs have a passion for cooking environmentally friendly food and the love can be tasted in each bite. Dishes include a Ninja Salad Wrap with the powerhouse green kale, shredded carrots, shaved red onion, sesame vinaigrette, salted peanuts, smooth avocado, fresh squeezed orange-marinated tofu, and the kick of orange-ginger sriracha as well as beer-battered avocado tacos with fried avocado, creamy jalapeño-cilantro sauce, red onion, cabbage, and lime. You can follow the truck on Twitter or find their location online. Seabirds will come to your house, office, or venue of choice, which makes for easy entertaining and a healthy, no hassle, unique food experience sure to please your guests. SeabirdsTruck.com

san diego “Best Vegetarian Thai Food” Plumeria

Plumeria Vegetarian Restaurant, in the heart of University Heights, serves high-quality vegan and vegetarian Thai dishes free of fish sauce and all animal products, with the exception of optional egg in some dishes. Incorporating the complex elements of Thai cuisine, such as sweet sugar, sour lime, salty sauces, spicy chilies, aromatic lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, all dishes are prepared fresh daily, using only the finest of these ingredients, including organic vegetables when available. Chicken is particularly great in all the traditional Thai menu items such as Pad Thai, hot ginger stirfry, or panang, green, or red curry, soaking up flavor like a sponge, while maintaining its meaty texture. MyPlumeria.com

“Best Place to Lose Your “Best Holiday Experience” Fear of Heights” The Hotel del Eddie V’s Prime Seafood Coronado Step into Eddie V’s in La Jolla and you’ll feel like you’re floating on water. The restaurant sits on a cliff with 180-degree views of the ocean with an expansive deck where you can dine while watching hundreds of pelicans dive for fish and kayakers paddle the cove. The wine cellar is well stocked and includes some lesser-known, yet worthwhile reds and whites and there is often live music playing in the bar. A great way to start your meal is with the lobster tacos, composed of succulent Maine lobster on house-made fresh tortillas and topped with grilled, sweet corn pico de gallo. The steak and seafood are served à la carte, which means there are many sides to choose from, the best being the crab fried rice with scallions and mushrooms and the roasted cauliflower with bacon and shallots. EddieV.com

“Best Barn Breakfast” The Farm House Café

In University Heights, there is a rustic, country French restaurant, run by a husband and wife team, that serves fresh, farm-totable food and some of the best brunch in San Diego. The Farm House Café is a cozy space with room for only about thirty people and is best for a leisurely meal without time constraints. Specialties include light, fluffy, moist ricotta pancakes topped with citrus butter and orange segments, buttery scrambled eggs with asparagus, nantua crab sauce, avocado and grilled levain bread, and a crispy potato galette with house-cured salmon, seasonal greens, chive créme fraiche, and two perfectly poached eggs. Pair your entrée with one of their eclectic mimosas, which change every Sunday. FarmHouseCafeSD.com

The Hotel del Coronado, lovingly called “The Del” by locals, is a San Diego icon and the perfect place to celebrate the holidays in grand style. This year’s holiday theme is “A Time to Celebrate” as the resort is decorated from head-to-toe with festive timepieces, gold and silver accents, vintage Santas, and over 100,000 glittering lights— Southern California’s holiday wonderland. Activities include ice skating at a spectacular beachfront rink, enjoying a traditional Victorian Tea while listening to holiday music, eating a lavish buffet dinner in the magnificent Crown Room and unwinding during the holiday rush at the Spa at The Del. HotelDel.com

“Best Romantic Taste of Morocco” Kous Kous

Enter the Kasbah, Kous Kous Moroccan restaurant, a dimly lit, romantic bistro and lounge in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego. Take your seat in a comfy booth, relax to the music playing softly in the background, and observe the beautiful patterns of light cast on the ceiling by hanging lanterns nearby. Trying a new cuisine can be intimidating, especially when out to impress a date, but at Kous Kous there is nothing to worry about. The unpretentious staff will kindly explain the menu, pointing out specialties and making recommendations. The food is authentic and delicious, especially the Berber Lamb Shank Tagine, which features slow braised lamb seasoned with saffron, cumin, garlic and preserved lemon, alongside seasonal vegetables and grilled merguez, a spiced lamb sausage, with a ginger garlic butter sauce, couscous, vegetables, caramelized raisins, and garbanzo beans. Perpetual calendar, every possible date complication, flyback chronograph function and tachymeter scale – the complexity and functionality of the Manero ChronoPerpetual is hard to match.
