2017 RESOLUTION Saying goodbye to 2016, which was a very stressful year for most of us, specially those who live in this part of the world that ended with a lot of non pleasant events last but not least of them the sudden death of the iconic actor Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, I picked my New Year’s Resolution, which is to be happy, giving away all the stress, fear and anxiety and just live in the present. I’ll see the positive side of it or at least work on how to get the best out of it. When we pass through a bad incident and we imprison ourselves inside it we can never see the way out, all we can focus on is the problem, which enlarges it and makes it become bigger and bigger till we surrender to it and allow it to eats us out. Get out of your comfort zone, mingle with new people, do the things you’ve always wanted to do but kept postponing to a better time that never comes. It is never too late to turn your life upside down and be who you feel more comfortable being now. What I

realized is that we always create our own walls, walls of fears and what ifs and how others would judge us, but actually these walls only exist in our own minds. It sadness me to see the number of young people who die suddenly and I am sure they have a lot of things to do on their list that life didn’t give them enough time to experience, live or enjoy. Don’t waste a second of your day frowning or carrying hard feeling for anyone, this doesn’t make you helpless it makes you stronger and feeling better from inside out. I tried to dedicate our Well Said section this month for these lively tips on how to attract positive energy, but I feel that the first step in doing so is to want to live with positivity; open your arms and your senses to live your life to the fullest and make use of each bit of it. Happy New Year and hope you can all join me in my ‘Being Happy’ Resolution.

Johnny Depp joins ‘Fantastic Beasts’ sequel

Disney Crosses $6B At Global Box Office; First Time In Studio’s History

Johnny Depp is about to enter a world of magic. The actor is set to be part of “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” in a secretive role. Depp will appear in a cameo in the first film, which opens on Nov. 18, and have a bigger role alongside star Eddie Redmayne in the sequel in 2018. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is based on Rowling’s book of the same name and set 60 years earlier than Harry Potter in 1926 New York. Depp is no stranger to franchises, having led both the live-action “Alice” films and “The Pirates of the Caribbean,” both for Disney.

The Walt Disney Studios posted its biggest year of all time at the global box office, landing $5.851B to best the 2015 full-year record. Now, thanks to the spellbinding ‘Doctor Strange,’ the Mouse has topped itself once again by speeding past the $6B mark — hitting it for the first time in the company’s history. As of now, Disney’s worldwide box office sits at $6.07B. This is only the second time in industry lore that a studio has levitated past the $6B threshold.

Fall/Winter 2017 Collection a

mira Tharwat talks to Egyptian Fashion Designer Norine Farah, who took us by storm for her bold designs. The young designer shares with us exclusively her latest collection for winter 2017, and reveals all about winning the DHL fashion competition in Cairo Fashion Festival.

What distinguishes your winter collection for this season? It’s a complete drift from what I’m used to in terms of both design and fabrics. I haven’t used my signature corset at all and so, it was an experiment for me to do things differently. I always feel challenged to try new things. What are the fabrics you used? The main choice of fabric was embroidery, specifically, Indian embroidery. Nude tulle is the base of most of the dresses while chiffon is the complement that brings the dress together. Describe the collection in three words… An edgy devilish angel. What was your inspiration while designing this collection? I wanted something that’s soft yet, bold all at once; pretty but not so pretty. How do you feel about winning the DHL fashion competition in Cairo Festival City? I’m honoured to have won of course. It took me a lot of time to source such material and

LOUNGE 16

much longer for my team to manage to stitch because of its harshness. It’s almost like plastic leather. Of course, I respect and love all of the other designers work, and if you want my honest opinion, I’m not a competitive person at all and I believe fashion is art, but this competition was a challenge, I was beyond excited to enter. I feel blessed that it was liked by everyone. How do you feel about having two of the most attractive young actresses (Amina Khalil and Dina El Sherbiny) wearing your designs on the red carpet of Cairo International Film Festival? It’s always an honour watching my work in general and watching Dina and Amina wearing them specifically is the cherry on top. Unfortunately, Amina couldn’t wear my dress that night due to awful circumstances. They all had to wear black and it was a late decision. I feel honoured to dress actors in general, but these two stars have a special part of me because they have been supporting me since the beginning.

In general, how do you see the development of fashion industry in Egypt? I’m extremely happy to see all these merging designers. They are creating a new market for something that didn’t exist a long time ago. I’m honoured to be part of this change and I support all designers wholeheartedly. Fashion is never ending and without fresh new ideas it won’t work. What are the fashion faux pas that Egyptian ladies do when attending New Year’s parties or any other event? Tight everything. Leather costumes! Red on red on red.

What is the fashion trend for winter 2017? Honestly, I don’t follow trends. May it be right or wrong, I don’t like hazing my thoughts with other designers’ work, and I believe trends aren’t for everyone. If we all follow the same trends, we will all look alike! But that’s my perception. Who are the celebrities you still dream of dressing? No doubly Scarlet Johansson.

How do you find the development of fashion industry in Egypt? The fashion industry in Egypt has been booming, many Egyptian fashion designers have taken the risk to successfully launch their labels in the middle of instability and the existence of an economic crisis. Who are the designers you like the most? I loved the show of Said Mahrouf as well the talent of the winner of the DHL competition, the young designer Norine Farah. Now that the holidays have started, Reem El Shennawi takes this opportunity and brings you some tips to improve your relationship with your parents..

Appreciate them

Your parents are the reason you became the person you are today. They have worked hard and have done many and many sacrifices for you to live a better life than they did, receive the best education they can offer, and much more than that. Think about all what they have done and are still doing for you and learn to appreciate them. Appreciating your parents will help you improve your relationship with them and eager to do more. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts and that you don’t take them for granted, and show them through your actions as well, remember that actions speak louder than words.

Respect them

No matter what happens between you and your parents, you have to respect them. Even if you disagree sometimes, watch your tone and words and be well-mannered. Be careful of what you say because you can hurt them without you realizing. Put in mind that your parents are more experienced than you are even if they are an older generation, they still know better, they love you more than anyone in the world and want the best for you.

Avoid unnecessary arguments

There are necessary arguments and there are unnecessary ones, even if at times they seem to be unavoidable, do your best to avoid the unnecessary discussions because they only widen the gap between you and your parents. Again, you need to practice responding in a

respectful manner and control what you say and do. Think about it for a few seconds before you respond, is it really necessary? Is it going to cause more damage than it should? This way you will avoid an argument that can cause an emotional dispute and save drama that might be worthless.

Take things from their perspective

Most of our problems are a result of failing to think about others’ perspectives because we create miscommunication and tend to be stubborn. If each one of us can think for a few minutes about others’ perspectives and reasons, we will avoid many clashes. Our parents are different, they grew up differently and they think differently and so, they often have different views. However, that doesn’t make us right, think about what they say, take things from their perspective, and be grateful you have the opportunity to learn from their past experiences. Learn from their lessons and use them in your life, you will remain thankful for them.

Be honest and open up

One of the best ways to improve your relationship with your parents is to share more often with them and talk about what might make you feel uncomfortable and about what bothers you. Communication builds trust and helps you stay in contact with them all the time. Listen to your parents and they will listen to you, discuss with them your problems and share with them their problems too. Improve your relationship by keeping the communication between you alive.

Don’t let fights last long

Do anything and everything to solve any problems with your parents sooner rather than later, letting things fester will worsen things and is completely unnecessary. Don’t overact when talking to your parents to avoid the argument from the beginning and if things developed to a fight, give them and yourself some time to calm down and then, discuss it together. The most important thing is to not let things develop and as mentioned before always stay in contact with them.

Separate from them emotionally

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t care for them or neglect their feelings, but you should learn to separate your emotions from them. Meaning, if you have been in a rough relationship with them, it’s time to move on, neglect your bad feelings about it and improve your relationship with them. You should also learn to separate your emotions when feeling down about something that concerns you because your parents have nothing to do with it. As mentioned before, discuss it with them and you might feel better, and if you won’t feel comfortable speaking about it then, keep it to yourself and don’t let them see your anger.

Grant them independence

Being close doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t have their space and privacy. Separate between sharing and invading their privacy. Your parents deserve to have a separate life just like you do.

RASHA

ounge went upclose and personal with Egyptian/Saudi TV Personality and Producer Rasha El Khatib to reveal all about her career and life, the secret behind her love to the gulf and her up-coming hit program. Tell us more about you… My name is Rasha Sabry El Khatib, I am a Gemini and so, I am a moody person, very sensitive and loyal. I am half Egyptian half Saudi. How did your passion for media come about? I graduated with a bachelor degree in Foreign Trade. I wanted to study Theater Art, but my parents were against the idea. I started my career in Saudi as a TV presenter in ‘Sehety Emra’ty’ program with Director Magdy El Kady. And then, I had my program ‘Ana We Sanay’y We Fanan’ on el Ray Channel. You have a very intimate relationship with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf in general, tell us more about that… I am married to an Arab businessman, who has nothing to do with the media, but supported me greatly. I owned ‘El Wad’ Production Company, which was based in El Riyad. I was also a part of ‘The General Union for Saudi Producers’ in Riyad before I became a part of ‘The General Union for Arab Producers’ in Egypt. Not to mention that

LOUNGE 40

I have many work relations and friendships with other media figures. You are a producer/actress/and TV presenter, which is closer to your heart? Being a TV presenter is the closest to my heart because I believe it’s my essence and the thing that I like to do, and being an actress comes in the second rank. Production is not that close to me as I stopped working in this field years ago. As an actress, you participated in few TV serials, who are the stars you still wish to work with? A lot of stars. Of course Egypt and the Arab world lost Mahmoud Abdel Aziz whom I admire a lot and whom I consider as an icon, I wish I’d have worked with him before he died. I wish I would work with star Adel Emam, Mohamed Ramadan, Ghada Abdel Razek and many more.

You had to end your visit to Saudi Arabia for Mirna El Mohandes death, how close were you? I wasn’t visiting Saudi at that time. I was with Mirna El Mohandes all the time while she was in the hospital, she was very close to my heart and a very important person in my life. We were very close and we shared many things together; she was my life. I had to travel for work purposes, and was shocked to hear the news by the media. I had a nervous breakdown, and I was unable to do anything at that time. She will remain in my heart and will always be as important as she was in my life. What are the awards you are most proud of? My last award was from ‘The General Union for Arab Producers’ Festival. I was awarded for ‘El Weswas’ series, and I was extremely happy to receive this award especially that this was the first time to be awarded on a drama TV serial. Working on this series with Director Hosny Saleh was a plus and I wish I would work with him again. We saw you in a Christian Dior dress during your participation in “Thanks Saudi Arabia” Musical, who are your favourite designers? I admire everything by Christian Dior from clothes to bags to shoes and even their perfumes. I also like Chanel and Burberry as they reflect femininity. I like simplicity and colour contrast, and I am eager to make changes all the time. I like to be unique in the simplest form. Why didn’t you make seasons two of ‘El Ser’ TV program? Several channels asked me to present another season for ‘El Ser’ and ‘El Serdab’ programs, but I refused because I want to present new things. After ‘El Ser’ and ‘El Serdab’ programs, I presented ‘Sahra Ma’ Rasha,’ a social program on El Hadath Channel, which was very successful because I discussed social cases, relationship problems, and other significant cases. It mainly focused on social problems that are the concern of each and every one of us. Who is the TV personality you aspire to? Many. I admire Amr Adib, Wael El Ebrashy, Lamis El Hadidy and many more. I however focus on being myself, I like to have my special path that is close to Rasha El Kahtib. As a producer, how do you feel the entertainment industry have changed economically after the Revolutions the Arab world witnessed in the past 6 years? I stopped producing before the Revolution and so, I can’t tell how much it changed. It definitely changed and many producers lost money because of the Revolution that had a great impact on the economy.

LOUNGE 42

What are your tips for overcoming the current difficult economical situation? I believe that we should unite all together as Arabs, we should work efficiently on important stuff and not focus on gaining money only. What are the spots you love visiting the most? I love going to Al Sayeda Nafysa Mosque and El Hussien as well as the Religious Complex as it reflects an amazing form of religious tolerance. Tell us about your trip to Somalia… I travelled to Somalia as one of the first Egyptian celebrities to go there and give support to the people in need there, I was overwhelmed with this experience and I would love to do it again soon. What is the rumor that annoyed you the most? That I am married to a Kuwaiti prince while it is not true I am married to Saudi Arabian businessman. What is the most valuable gift you’ve ever received? It was my birthday gift, my husband brought me a diamond set, which I admire the most not because of how valuable it is, but because it was from my husband, the man who means everything to me and who gives me support and pushes me forward to follow my dreams and be successful. What about ‘Esty Beywga’any’ movie? I decided to quit working on ‘Esty Beywga’any’ movie with Hany Ramzy, whom I admire. Hany William contacted me and I discussed with him ‘Amina’s role’ and had some comments on the movie, which he welcomed and therefore, I signed the contract with the company. We started shooting, and I remember that the first day of shooting lasted for around 19 hours that included around 10 scenes for me with Hani Ramzy and my mother in the movie. I was surprised the next day when I was supposed to shoot my scenes with the producer of the movie and wife of director Ehab Lamy, Maya Nasry to find out that they removed off many of my scenes. I knew that Maya Nasry was the one behind deleting my scenes and when I spoke to Director Ehab Lamy he supported her decision. Of course, I refuse to have any colleague interfering in my role even if the actress is the producer so, I had to quit in silence without making any complains at the actor’s syndicate because of my admiration to actor Hany Ramzy. What are you working on? I am currently working on a program that is going to be a hit just like ‘El Ser’ and ‘El Serdab.’ It is a very important program and will have a new approach and path, and will be aired in Ramadan 2017.

HISHAM KHARMA RELEASES AL YAQEEN AFTER 15 YEARS IN THE MAKING a

fusion music project that’s been in the making for 15 years has now come to life. Musician and Music Composer Hisham Kharma launched AL YAQEEN, an album that is about that moment in life when everything stops and vision is crystal clear. It is absolute certainty. The album is inspired by the journey of Kharma’s talent, and the moment he decided to let the musical inspirations take over and become his life’s work. In Al Yaqeen, Kharma combines electronic music with the unique sounds of traditional oriental instruments, creating a soulful experience that captures the inspirational essence of both. The result is track after track of moments that take their listeners on a journey that transcends time and space. The album consists of 13 tracks featuring several musicians playing the oud, violin, nay and other authentic instruments blended with some very hip and progressive electronic sounds. Hisham Kharma’s music journey kick-started back in the late 90s when he released an upbeat version of Hani Shenouda’s masterpiece “Shams El Zanaty.” The track was a major hit and an iconic sound of those university years. Earlier this year, a new version was released, and the legend Hani Shenouda himself witnessed a live performance of it at Sawy Cultural Wheel. Shenouda said at the time, “It is very rare to see such talented musicians who share this kind of passion and commitment to music. It shows on stage how they are devoted to the music they play and how it’s become a huge part of them. This will definitely set a new trend in the music scene in Egypt and abroad in the very near future, and I truly wish them more success and recognition for the great music they make.” Al YAQEEN Album Launch Concert is planned for December 2nd at Le Marquee in Cairo Festival City. The live performance is set to be a tremendous experience of music, visuals, and a magical journey. Tickets are available on Ticketsmarche.com

Sources of Vitamin D

r

ecently, vitamin D deficiency has been a booming topic that is striking a lot of research and has been involved in so many ongoing diseases. So, let us break through this topic to catch up with the latest updates.

LOUNGE 48

•It is estimated that sensible exposure to the sun ultraviolet rays on bare skin for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times per week allows the body the ability to produce sufficient vitamin D, but vitamin D has a half-life of only two weeks, meaning that stores can run low, especially in winter. •The flesh of fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel. •The fish liver oil, beef liver, eggs, fortified milk and fortified cereals.

People likely to have Vitamin D deficiency:

1. People with dark skin: The darker your skin, the more sun you need to get the same amount of vitamin D as a fair-skinned person. 2. Older Adults: Old people are at risk of being deficient because as they age, their skin becomes thinner than younger people and thus, they can’t synthesize Vitamin D efficiently. 3. People who are obese: They need larger than usual intake of vitamin D because high amounts of fat under the skin hold more of vitamin D and alters its release into the circulation. 4. People who have gone gastric bypass surgery: They can become vitamin D deficient overtime since part of the upper small intestine, where vitamin D absorbed is bypassed in the operation and vitamin D mobilized from the fat stores to blood may not compensate over time.

Role of Vitamin D in our Body:

1. Adequate vitamin D intake is important for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption as well as maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. 2. Support the health of the immune system, brain and nervous system. 3. Regulate insulin levels and aid diabetes management. 4. Support lung function and cardiovascular health.

Signs of Vitamin D deficiency: 1. General tiredness, aches and pains, and a general sense of not feeling well. 2. Severe bone or muscle pain or weakness. 3. Stress fractures, especially in the legs, pelvis, and hips.

What is the link between Vitamin D and depression? Vitamin D receptors have been found in many parts of the brain. Receptors are found on the surface of a cell, where they receive chemical signals. It was found that people having lower levels of vitamin D were more prone to development of depression.

Can Vitamin D help in preventing Hair Loss?

Can Vitamin D lower the risk of breast cancer?

Vitamin D keeps the bones and skin healthy and in recent years; it’s also been linked to hair growth. A 2012 study in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine suggests that the vitamin can help create new follicles, which are little pores, where new hair can grow. In addition, Vitamin D, along with other recently discovered chemicals, may also help wake up follicles that have become dormant, according to researchers at Harvard.

Vitamin D entered the cancer spotlight when researchers noticed that women, who live in with greater sun exposure, have a lower incidence of breast cancers. Vitamin D has several actions in the body that could lower cancer risk. These include: -Slowing the growth of cancer cells. -Stimulating cancer cell death. -Reducing the formation of blood vessels that feed cancerous tumors.

Can Vitamin D help improve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms? Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that leads to inflammation of the joints.Vitamin D may help preserve knee cartilage. Researchers found that older adults had more preserved knee cartilage if they had greater sun exposure and higher vitamin D levels in their blood. Vitamin D may indirectly help improve arthritis symptoms. Supplements and sunshine do benefit muscle health. Strong muscles around the joints can ease some of the discomfort caused by arthritis. This is because stronger muscles can take some of the stress off damaged cartilage in the joints. LOUNGE 49

Architecture is a subject of consumptions, instead of a monument for eternity. According to this, Denis redesigned a baroque Austrian Palace, giving it a modern approach. Boca do Lobo was part of the project, providing this interior designer, luxury furniture and sculptural pieces that served as an independent and strong character in the theatre play. This project was partly adopted and partly modified, according to functional details. “The real challenge was to integrate

LOUNGE 54

the existing collection of art, antique furniture and oriental carpets and to give them a completely new role in the composition,” said the designer. The baroque history of the space was treated as a fact and a kind of a past imagination but the detailed research of it was not the issue of interest during the design process. There is a kind of baroque spirit in the air that was mixed with strong contemporary influence. The rooms thereby created have been meticulously dealt with

separately, according to the principle “everything is allowed.“ The various moods and sources of inspiration translated into the design of the individual rooms are always independent of each other and yet familiar. An intentional renouncement of clear definitions along with a casual play with the material resulted in an eccentric “mix and match“ of shapes, surfaces, colours and ornaments. An enormous quantity of ornaments on wallpapers, fabrics and carpets

in compositions that appear randomly but are precisely attuned, have a warm and familiar, but at the same time surprising and unexpected effect. An abundance of antique, restored and newly designed furniture from all epochs have been brought into a dialogue with contemporary design and art objects, at times in dignified, at times in ironic compositions. The boundaries between “old“ and “new“ thereby totally disappear, creating a new, inherently consistent composition.

Ways t c a r t t to A e Energy v i t i s Po

T

here is a bad aura in the air these days that found its way to our hearts with the change in the weather and the current economical situation Egypt is witnessing, making an end to 2016, which might not be the best year ever, this month Lounge welcomes with you 2017 with tips on how to bring positivity to your day and see the brighter side of life.

1

Meditate and connect with nature, being in office and with a roof over your head day and night might make you feel suffocated and under pressure all the time, during your day off try to give yourself a treat and have a break, put yourself out there and let the sun and air penetrate your body and soul (thank God sun beams are still for free).

2

Enough competing; treating life as a race and that you have to always be the winner makes it very challenging for you and all those around you, I know it is very tempting to try and prove yourself better than those around you, but in the middle of the race you feel that you are too stressed to achieve the next goal instead of stopping for a second to enjoy what you already won.

3

Listen to music, make a CD of uplifting melodies and if you can play it in your car on your way to work and shake your body a little (no penalty for dancing while driving yet), you will start your day with a smile on your face.

4 LOUNGE 68

Think positively, thinking of the negatives and what ifs will bring pressure to your soul and might

attract bad omen to your future, while positive thinking makes you see life with an aura of optimism.

5 6

Play sports, it doesn’t have to be in a form of commitment, but just even if you walked for an hour especially in nature it will reflect on your mood positively. Say what you feel, don’t hide your emotions and don’t hold on to the negative feelings towards anyone. This might be a little difficult for most of us, but learn that all the hatred and negativity you have towards people affects you more than they affect these people, so try to let go and learn more on how to have tolerance towards people specially those who hurt you instead of wasting your time and efforts on useless revenge.

7

Pamper yourself, heading to a massage even if once a month would have a magical effect on your body, soul and the glow of your skin, renewing the circulation of the blood helps you get rid of all the toxics and the stress out of the body to make you more energetic and feel good about yourself.
