ALL FOR LOVE The one thing all people aspire to and relationships are built on is love, we all live our life journey in quest for love. It is the main source of happiness and what makes us feel secured appreciated and even worth living. By love here I don’t mean couples love only, I mean love in its more wide meaning; friends’ love to each other, brother and sister’s love for one another, or the most sacred pond of them all mother and child’s love for each other. You can easily notice the disturbance in anyone’s personality if he was deprived of love from one or both of his parents during his childhood, and how this affects his psychology when he grows up. Inspired by Nelly Karim TV serial last Ramadan ’Sekot Hor’ and the amazing Youssra’s ‘Fok Mostawa El Shobohat,’ I felt the emphasis on how a child’s upbringing can shape his personality and either bring the best out of him, if he/she was surrounded with love, or leaves him/her a mutilated image of a human being, or creates a cruel monster out of him that doesn’t know how to love or even how to feel. Parent’s role in life is not only to

provide a living for their kids, shelter, or a secured financial life, their main role is to shower them with love and acceptance, not taken for granted love, but rather true real expressed love. Hug them whenever you have a chance, kiss them and make them feel accepted and appreciated. A love that was not expressed or told is meaningless. No matter how stressed you feel or even if you are a single mom or dad this has nothing to do with the sacred bond and relationship that you should have with your child. As children are tomorrow’s men, the more care, love and positivity we give them, the more we can guarantee having a better future for our country and humanity at large. Thanks to last Ramadan’s drama that stressed the impact of being loved and accepted during childhood on a person’s adolescent and how stable his psychological life would be, this is actually one of the main targets of art; to shed light on important social issues. DONIA

ALLEGUE a mira Tharwat talks to international turban

designer Donia Allegue who shares with us how her turbans fronted Vogue’s cover and how they were worn by Beyonce, how her passion for turbans came about, and her tips for young designers who want to go international.

SS 2016 Collection LOUNGE 22

Tell us more about yourself‌ I am a designer with a typical background. I have been immersed in an international environment at a very young age and spent my childhood in various parts of the world, which gave me boundless open-mindness. I moved to Paris to enrol at the LycÊe Saint Louis de Gonzague and later at ESCP Europe, French leading business school. Even within the framework of this very general education, I knew early on that my future carrier laid in fashion, which is why I specialized in luxury goods. I graduated in 2006, and learned the ropes of my trade with Fendi, YSL and Dior, but I instinctively knew that my entrepreneur spirit would eventually take over and that one day I would set up my own company. How did your passion for fashion come about? My passion for fashion came from my mother, a visionary and ultra creative person. I grew up watching her finding inspiration everywhere. I remember shopping with her in fashion boutiques as well as in markets in small villages. I remember her designing leather pieces in Istanbul or in Yemen that she would match with her cowboy boots bought in California. Her closet was, and still is, a gold mine. My passion came also from both my grandmothers: they were dressmakers. As a kid, I would spend hours and hours with them designing pieces for my dolls.

Why did you specialize in turbans specifically? In February 2011, I had a revelation, when visiting an apartment, in Paris, with my mother. The lady who owned the place was wearing a very elegant turban, which bestowed her a unique charisma. This was quite an illumination and I saw the turban as the absolute fashion accessory. After some research and a market study, I realized that there was no Parisian turban house on the market. With the support of my family, my clan, as I like to call, I set up DONIA ALLEGUE, Parisian house of millinery turbans and head pieces in October 2013. How did you become international? Becoming international was quite easy as the use of turbans is universal. So many different types of women do wear turbans for various reasons: coquetry, style, culture, illness etc. My press coverage also allowed me to become international very quickly. You dressed a lot of celebrities, would you share with us some of the names? We had the chance, indeed, in only 2 years of existence, to dress many celebrities such as Beyonce, Diane Kruger, Elisa Sednaoui, Jazz woman China Moses, Italian star Elena Barolo, French actress Sofiia Manousha, Italian blogger Chiara Biasi and many others.

LOUNGE 24

You also participated with a lot of international fashion houses, which house you enjoyed working with the most? My brand collaborated with many fashion houses for press photo shoots. My favourite one was with supermodel and it girl Elisa Sednaoui wearing DONIA ALLEGUE, Dior, Gerard Darel and Harry Winston. It was for L’Officiel France (November 2014) was very proud to be associated with Dior, as I had worked, with Christian Dior before launching my company for several years. So, this brand is very close to my heart. What inspires you when you design a turban? Everything! But most of all beauty, aesthetics! My creation process is based on my senses: a perfume, music, an image, a material, every little thing which moves me leads me to the writing of the story of the collection. The unusual thing is that I don’t draw. I am a very visual person: I have very clear images of my creations in mind and then, I describe them in the most precise way to the craftspeople I work with. Who do you think is the ideal girl to put on a turban? A girl with personality and style. So it could definitely be you (smiles). Could it also be used for some trendy veiled girls as a replacement to the veil? Of course! Many customers already do. It is a subtle way to deal with culture and at the same time coquetry and fashion.

LOUNGE 25

FASHION & TRENDS LOUNGE

fashionista

My favourite fabrics are silk and cotton. Silk because of the softness of the material, it is also timeless, and very elegant. There are so many different types of silks that I never get bored with. Cotton because it is comfortable and cozy. We all have a childhood souvenir of a cotton outfit we loved when we were young.

Some of the turbans you designed were custom made, which is the closest to your heart? The one I have designed for Beyonce. I remember her stylist wrote to us asking for turbans. We sent her a selection, but she wanted something more dramatic so, I decided to design a special piece for her. She wore it at a party in New York. Are you planning on expanding your business to design clothes, or do you prefer to stay specialized? For the moment I prefer to stay specialized. There is so much to do in headwear. This sector is gaining more and more interest and there is still a lot to do. But, I am not against expanding to other product categories. Who are the stars you would love to design turbans for? So many: Oprah, Katy Perry, Eva Mendes. What are your tips for young designers who want to work internationally like yourself? I would say: first be passionate about your business because it will take most of your time and energy. Then, surround yourself with inspiring and supporting people. Also, don’t forget that timing is important. The market needs to be ready for your products. The customer may not be aware that he needs your product, but he should be ready to accept it. Finally, follow your intuition. Only you have a clear vision of what you want your brand to be. This is how you make a breakthrough.

The Misconceptions of Divorce how to deal with them

Marriage nowadays has become extremely

difficult as it becomes more complicated every year making commitment seems to get harder, and thus, the divorce rate increases. Being a divorced woman has a negative psychological burden as the society becomes critical and judgmental. Besides the difficult time that she has to pass through after divorce, a divorced woman is obliged to deal with how the society sees divorce and its criticism as well as its misconceptions. This month Shorouk Nafie brings you the top misconceptions of the society about divorce.. LOUNGE 34

The reasons behind divorce are numerous, and some are serious and so, sometimes divorce is the best solution for the wellbeing of the person himself, the other partner and the kids if there are any. People should learn that divorce at times is a new beginning and it’s not a shame to be divorced; on the contrary, it’s a brave decision that other people couldn’t take. Actually, divorce at times is the best step towards a healthy mental & physical life saving a lot of negative consequences in the future that could happen. Some couples choose divorce to end up all the fights, the differences and the struggling, but in today’s society things become complicated and a divorced woman holds a greater burden afterwards. After divorce, a woman signs her divorce papers and thinks she got rid of the burden on her chest, just to hold on another one on her back labelled with a big red warning sign ‘divorced!’ And now, she has to deal with the misconceptions of the society about being divorced. First, comes all fingers pointing out loud that whatever had happened, it’s definitely her fault, a woman should know how to keep her

man no matter what, and they do forget how fragile and sensitive a woman could be, they ignore her pride and start to blame her that she should have been able to handle a cheater, a man who lost his feelings, a selfish man who wants to get married to someone else or even a drug addict. While in fact, you should hold your head up high and believe that this is your life and you should live it the way you believe is best for you. People like to pass judgments and hate to be judged, and no matter what you do, you will still be judged for whatever you do. However, with the increase in the divorce rate things have become less complicated, and the judgment have become somehow rational. You need to learn to ignore what people say and focus on your life and your happiness. Unfortunately and sadly, many men in our society see a divorced woman as a ‘used’ person. Some men refuse to get married to a divorced woman because she is not a virgin even though she was married before, ignoring the fact that this could happen to their mother or sister, which is considered humiliation and ignorance. Choosing to end a relationship is a decision that both parties take, and it’s not fair that one of both parties should take all the blame or bare

all the consequences alone. If that concept is valid then, it should be applied to men as well. Yet, there are a lot of men out there who don’t think the same way, they respect women and believe that a past relationship is not something to be ashamed of, and on a brighter note, the number of men who think this way is bigger than you think. So, it’s a matter of choosing the right person who has the same mentality of yours, and respects you for who you are and is willing to be with you. A divorced woman is being judged by the way she dresses and socializes after divorce. Right after divorce, people start to make spotlights and criticize the way a woman chooses how to have fun. A divorced woman going out with her friends is perceived by the society as not appropriate, judgment becomes reality and all of a sudden it appears that this is her aim and that she wanted to get divorced to have fun and enjoy her freedom. Again, people neglect the reasons behind the divorce and the fact that it’s normal that people try to get out of the depression zone and decide to have a new life, assuming that this is not appropriate and that this is against the norms and traditions. Sad but true, the society still hold misconceptions that they don’t want to think about and change. However, people move on and in order to get over a failed relationship you should cry out loud then, move on the way you want, don’t

let people stop you from enjoying your life and moving on, live the life you always wanted the way you want, you only live once. Remember that people’s judgment will end one day and also, remember that not all people think the same way. Now that you start to live your life and meet new people here and there, you could meet the nastiest form of misconception: these men who try to manipulate you striving to sexually flirt with you assuming that it’s totally okay and that you will accept that because simply you need it. In fact, these types of men are manipulative, but cowards, it is not difficult to spot them and get rid of them. Be wise and don’t rush into relationships before you know the intentions of the person whom you will be with. Take your time, learn from your mistakes and don’t let people get into your life too soon. Most importantly, you should know that these kinds of men could approach you whether you are divorced or single. One of the worst misconceptions about divorce is that your love life has to come to an end, especially when you become a single mom, which is absolutely not true. Having children doesn’t mean that your love life is over as long as you have the ability to raise your children; your love life has nothing to do with having children from a previous marriage. A lot of

women who have children get married again and live a stable happy life, just make sure that your children understand and of course, choose the right time to speak to them. For some children, it is quite difficult for them to accept to have another father or to accept that their mother get married again. You need to find the right way and the right time to talk to them and you personally need to know that another man could raise them better than their biological father, you only need to make the right choice. It’s true that the society is becoming wiser and more advanced, but there are a lot of people who still believe in these misconceptions labeling divorced women, putting the blame on them. The good news is that the misconceptions are starting to become less, but we should still deal with the remaining ones or learn how to ignore them. People should change the way they treat women in our society, they are our mothers, sisters, aunts and friends. Also, women should treat themselves better than they do, they should not let people change their path, don’t let people’s beliefs make you live with depression, anxiety and fear. Remind yourself of the reason why you choose to be divorced, which will make you ignore people’s views and judgment. People won’t take charge of your life and will never be in your place so, live your own life happily and optimistically, enjoy the ride and know that you live only once so, enjoy it as much as you can.

Mourad Makram On Food, Media and Infidelity... a

mira Tharwat talks to TV personality Mourad Makram, who we saw last Ramadan in the suspense series ‘Fok Mostawa Al Shobohat.’ The food critic talks about his role, his programme ‘Alakeel,’ and his coming roles..

How was the shift from TV presenting to acting? It is not a shift, they coexist; my dream was always acting. Presenting came as a bonus for being an entertainer. Your acting contributions are minimal, what are the reasons behind that? I’m very bad at marketing myself that’s why acting was delayed, but yet my first series was in 2005 with the great Samir Seif. How were you nominated for your role in ‘Fok Mostawa Al Shobohat?’ I was contacted by El Adl group to meet with Director Hany Khalifa by a recommendation of Assistant Director Nahla Farouk. What tempted you the most to accept the role? The character, the production house, Hany khalifa and of course working with the great Yousra; I knew I couldn’t go wrong.

In your opinion, is there any excuse for infidelity? No. What would turn a woman off in a man? So many things, but it can all be put in one word; social stupidity. Apart from ‘Fok Mostawa El Shobohat,’ what are the TV serials you enjoyed watching the most this Ramadan? I did not really have the time to watch any, but I did catch some episodes of Nelly Karim’s TV serial ’Sokout Hor’ and Ghada Adel’s serial ‘Al Mezan’ and I loved them. Being a restaurant reviewer, how much do you give your wife’s cooking skills out of 10? My wife is a career woman, she does not cook. From all the places you’ve done food reviews to, what are the restaurants you

recommend to Lounge readers the most? I can’t do that publicly not to offend anyone, but the readers can check my official page and they will find my honest to God opinion about more than 160 restaurants all over Egypt. Are you a good cook? No (laughs) I am just a critic. Did you ever consider opening your own restaurant? Not for now, maybe someday.

You seem to be comfortable with your body, what is your comment on all the commercial sustaining the stereotypical image that being skinny for girls is the most ideal and having six pack is what every man should aspire to? All the ads concentrate on the issue of being in shape, well I am in shape; round is a shape, don’t you think? (smiles). Any coming movies? Yes this feast; I will be a guest of honour in a film called ‘Weekend’ with Hassan Raddad and Emmy Samir Ghaneim. What are you working on? I am working on new ideas for my program on CBC Sofra “E lAkeel” and also for the big event “Mouled ElAkeel” in its second year, later this October.

QUIT SUGAR FOR CONSISTENT ENERGY LEVELS

The sugar rush you get after eating a handful of gummy worms might help you stay productive for a few minutes, but a drop in energy will quickly follow. Stick with natural sources of energy, like fruits and veggies, instead. Your levels will stay consistent, so you can finish that jog and still have enough energy to make dinner.

SLEEPING CAN MAKE OR BREAK A WORKOUT

Sleep is critical to runners. In fact, much of their post-run recovery occurs while they’re sleeping. When runners start missing sleep, they rob their bodies of this critical recovery time, which leads to a cycle of less and less energy during their runs. And so, 8 hours of sleep is extremely important for a workout.

HEALTH DESK THE BEST TIME TO EAT CARBS TO BURN FAT There’s a “best time” to eat carbs to get max fat burning from your workout, and believe it or not, it depends on your sex. A study found that when guys ate carbs after exercise, they torched more fat in the three hours post- workout than if they ate carbs before; for women it was just the opposite. There’s ample evidence that for men, working out without carbs leads to greater adaptation of the muscle to burn fat. To get your incinerator turned up high, have a fruit salad or bagel, both carb heavy, before your post-workout protein shake.

WEATHER CHANGES AFFECTS MIGRAINES

GRINDING TEETH MAKE YOU FEEL AWFUL WHEN YOU WAKE UP

If you wake up with a headache, it’s most likely because you’ve been clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth overnight. Research shows that massage can help with symptoms, so apply some gentle pressure and/ or a warm, damp cloth to the jaw area right before you go to sleep and as soon as you wake up in the AM to help break the cycle. Also, consider seeing your dentist for a mouth guard, which keeps your teeth from grinding down.

LOUNGE 48

People who experience migraines and tension-type headaches often point to weather as a trigger. Some can even predict rainstorms, snowstorms or other weather changes before they occur, based on the onset of their symptoms. A recent study has found that patients who believe they are sensitive to weather experienced an increase in their headaches during the winter.

Belly Dancing W

e all want to be in shape especially that summer is here, and we won’t be hiding in our coats anymore. However, instead of hitting the gym and walking on the boring treadmill, you can belly dance; celebrate your femininity and stay in shape. This month Lounge brought you the health benefits of belly dancing, so read bellow and shake the floor…

Improved posture and muscle toning; Stress reduction; the repetitive 1 During the dance, the movements of hip 4 movements of the dance and the drops, circles, figure eights, and shimmies concentration needed to do them can help put the joints and ligaments in the lower back and hip through a full range of gentle, repetitive motion. This movement helps increase the flow of synovial fluid (nature’s lubricant) in these joints. Weight loss as belly dancing can 2 burn up to 300 calories per hour. This estimate will vary, of course, depending on

the intensity of your dancing. Combined with a healthy diet that involves sensible eating, belly dancing can without a doubt be part of a sound weight loss program.

Preparation for childbirth; even if you 3 are pregnant, belly dancing is still good for you; The movements of belly dancing make an excellent prenatal exercise regimen that strengthens the muscles used during the childbirth process. The toned abdominal muscles and natural hip tucks, which are similar to the “pelvic rocking” taught during prenatal classes, teach the expectant mother how to move her pelvis.

back muscles prevent back injuries, and they promote good posture as well. Exercising the arms. New belly-dance students are always surprised by how much they have to use their arm muscles. Belly-dancers have to hold their arms up for long periods of time, and it actually takes quite a lot of strength to perform arm movements slowly and gracefully.

7

Exercising the carrying muscles without Aiding digestion; it’s true! Exercising the 5 impact. A belly-dancer uses her 8 abdominal area, not just by rolling the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes to hold belly, but also by swaying the torso, helps her steady as she performs hip movements or travels smoothly across the floor. However, even though she gets a great lower-body workout, the amount of impact to her knees and ankles is minimal.

Building the back muscles evenly. Belly-dancers use their torsos a lotmuch more than ballet, modern or tap dancers. Only jazz dancers come close to our use of rib movements and undulations.
