FAREWELL PROFESSOR AHMED ZEWAIL Last month on the 2nd of August, Egypt lost the Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Ahmed Zewail after a long battle with cancer at the age of 70. Dr. Ahmed Zewail was born in Damanhour and was raised in Desouk. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Chemistry from Alexandria University before moving to the United States to complete his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania supervised by Robin M. Hochstrasser. After completing his PhD, Zewail did postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, supervised by Charles Bonner Harris. Following this, he was awarded a faculty appointment at the California Institute of Technology in 1976, and he was made the first Linus Pauling Chair in Chemical Physics. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 5 March 1982. Zewail was the Director of the Physical Biology Center for Ultrafast Science and Technology at the California
Institute of Technology. He had also been nominated and participated in President Barack Obama’s Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), an advisory group of the nation’s leading scientists and engineers to advise the President and Vice President, and formulate policy in the areas of science, technology, and innovation. Dr. Zewail was the first Arab to win a Nobel in any of the sciences, where he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 for developing a revolutionary technique to observe the dance of molecules as they break apart and come together in chemical reactions. He used that stature to champion science education and research in Egypt and the Middle East. Farewell to the great scientist and we hope Egypt would bring us more and more great figures in all fields of life to make us feel always proud of our country.

CHRIS BROWN WINS BIG IN CHILD CUSTODY CASE SANDRA BULLOCK IS ‘OPEN TO GETTING MARRIED AGAIN’
The romance between Sandra Bullock and photographer Bryan Randall continues to bloom in full force, with one insider saying they’re “tied to the hip” when they’re not busy working. What’s more, Sandra is apparently “more open to getting married again” since things got serious with her beau.
Chris Brown earned another win in his ongoing custody dispute with Nia Guzman regarding their daughter, Royalty. Although the pair settled on joint custody in September, Nia subsequently returned to court with a new assortment of demands, all of which have been shot down by the judge handling the case. Nia had requested full custody but the terms of their settlement will remain in place, the judge ruled, giving Chris access to Royalty 12 days a month. Nia also asked that Chris only be allowed monitored visitation and that his mother be barred from seeing the 2-year-old.

Tell us more about you (age/education/ horoscope) My name is Wesam Osama, I am a Leo, a graphic designer, and Hamid El Shaari’s Personal Stylist, who taught me a lot of different things and whom I admire his music. When did your passion for fashion came about? I love fashion since I was a little kid, I love to know and read everything and anything about fashion. My family and my friends used to call me a “shopaholic.” I always love to pick different pieces together so as to look stylish and different. By time, I started to design by myself what I believe in until the idea of Hawaii came to me. What inspired you to launch Hawaii collection? I’m in love with Hawaii, I love the Hawaiian style in general, the flowers and the music; it’s so different and unique. I have never been there before, but I wish I can go very soon. However, I wanted to make a new different line here in Egypt, and my dream is to launch my line in Hawaii.
What distinguishes Hawaii t-shirts from any other summer shirts? Hawaii is different in its own style as well as the material, the designs are all about Hawaiian life. I wanted to design comfortable t-shirts that are different and new. What are the biggest challenges you encounter while launching the collection? The production took so long because I took care of every little detail until everything came out right. Although the finishing part was the hardest one, finally we had our Hawaiian line. Are there plans for expanding the business to launch more pieces? I’m preparing the Winter collection now. Hawaiian shorts, bags and even slippers are in the plan. One of my dreams is to have my own Hawaiian store open everywhere. Where can people find Hawaii t-shirts? Till now we are mainly online ( Facebook: Hawai - Instagram: Hawai__ )

MONA ABDIN Eyebrows Microblading
e
yebrow tattoos have been very popular years ago, and recently Microblading has invaded the world of beauty for its simplicity and natural look. Aiming to make people look at their best by enhancing their features, Mona Abdin is one of the most popular names in the field of makeup and Microblading. Reem El Shennawi speaks to Mona about what Microblading is, how the procedure is done, and the tips to keep your tattoo live longer.. Tell us more about yourself I graduated with a Mass Communication (Journalism) bachelor degree from AUC. I’ve always had passion for makeup since I was a kid, I used to watch celebrities’ eye makeup and how makeup can transform. Yet, I always hated the artificial and fake look, I believe that makeup highlights your best feature and doesn’t change your character. I used to do makeup to my friends and relatives as a hobby. And then, I took my first professional makeup course with Make Up For Ever. I worked in a charity foundation after that for a while, and then, I took my passion for makeup more seriously. I took more courses and traveled a lot, and that is one why reason I loved Microblading for its natural look. I am certified from Phibrows Academy, which is the largest academy worldwide that is specialized in Microblading and permanent makeup. I believe I have done everything that I like from journalism to charity work to makeup. What is Microblading? Microblading is an advanced technique for tattooing that is also known as Micropigmentation, Eyebrow Embroidery, Microstroking, Feathering, and 3D. It’s called feathering as it looks much more natural
LOUNGE 24
than the tattoo. It has been developed in the Far East and Asia for years now. It started to develop all over the world in the past 2/3 years. One of the most important advantages of Microblading is that it is done by a manual tool, while the other tattoo is done by a machine, which vibrates and has a powdering effect that covers the whole eyebrow. The old tattoo was then developed to strokes, which still looks artificial and a bit devilish because it draws thick strokes. The manual tool was then developed, which looks like a pen and has a small blade at the end, which has from 7 to 14 needles. This technique is based on the artist himself as in the way he draws the strokes as well as the pattern. However, this technique has also disadvantages. Mainly, this technique has to be practiced by a very well-trained artist because this tool is very sharp and can cause damage; it should be done on a very superficial layer of the skin, which is decided by the experienced artist. There is a community that is called ‘Microblading Community,’ where we are in touch with one another, we share our experiences and pictures, and we learn from each other, it’s a worldwide community.
"Eyebrows are sisters not twins."
How is the procedure done? It has to be done with high accuracy as well as high hygiene measures. You must take a hygiene course before Microblading, I have received a certificate before I started the Microblading course. To achieve the best results, you need more than one session that takes from an hour and a half to 2 hours. We use a numbing cream at the beginning and anesthetic during the process, and the results are very satisfactory. The first week is when itching and flaking begins and scabs start to fall off. You won’t see the results until the scabs fall off. It’s a semi-permanent tattoo that fades by time depending on the type of the skin and how much you take care of it. It lasts around a year up to a year and a half and some cases can last up to 2 years, the intensity of the colour starts to decrease after 6 months. I discuss with the client first the desired look, and then I start by drawing the eyebrows according to measurements that are suitable to the features of the face, the eyes, the nose and the bone structure. The drawing takes a long time so that both eyebrows would look the same. Yet, I have to mention that everyone has a half of their body that looks a bit different than the other one, which makes difference in eyebrows as well. We try to achieve the best results, but “eyebrows are sisters not twins.”
Can anyone do Microblading? Not everyone can do Microblading, I send the client a document first to read to decide whether it’s suitable medically for the client or not. People with some skin diseases, pregnant women, period of breastfeeding, and people who take blood thinners and anti-depressants are not advised to do Microblading, and so, I ask about the medical history to decide whether you can or can’t do Microblading. Who can benefit from Microblading? There are people who can benefit from Microblading like, cancer patients, Alopecia patients, Lupus, as well as people with scars. We as the Microblading Community don’t take money from any cancer patient, which makes us feel selfworth. Can a tattoo be corrected with Microblading? Microblading can correct old permanent makeup under 2 conditions: it has been faded by 80 percent or if it is thin and we make it thicker. Cases with old tattoo is limiting and doesn’t bring a result as satisfactory as with virgin brows. What are the most important tips to take care of your tattoo? Pre and after care are as important as enhancement. The healing process and colour retention depends on your health (immunity, stress, smoking, drugs and more). And so, you have to take good care of your tattoo. You shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight especially for the first 2 weeks, and after that you can use sun block just like you do with your face, this helps your tattoo stay longer. You shouldn’t sink in the pool or the sea also for the first 2 weeks, no peeling creams, and no saunas or jacuzzis in the first period.

Things You Shouldn’t Say During a Fight
R
elationships can’t be about the fun all the time, you have to fight sometimes, disagree at times and be mad. However, fights are not the reason behind failed relationships, but the type of communication is the thing that can cause damage to your relationship with your partner. To have a healthy communication between you and your partner, especially during fights, you should learn to control yourself and that there are things that you should never say. Reem El Shennawi brings you the top worst statements that you shouldn’t say during a fight...
LOUNGE 26
1
“I’M NOT MAD” or “NOTHING” This is very common! It is certainly provoking to your partner because he knows that you are mad, and as you know, men like straight forward answers, they hate it when you are indirect. Besides, if you are not mad so why are you rolling your eyes and/ or answering with one-word responses to his questions? Being straight forward and talking about what is bothering you will make you feel better and will solve things. Plus, don’t create a gap between you and your partner by ignoring what’s bothering you. Be mature and speak for yourself, discuss what happened and find a solution together. There is a chance that when you talk to your partner about how you really feel you realize that you misunderstood things or that things are not the way you thought they were.
2
“IT’S OKAY” “It’s okay” is just a similar response just like “Nothing,” it shows disrespect to your partner’s concern and makes your partner unwilling to ask you again or share things with you. Instead of being mad and ignoring the real reasons, speak with your partner and show him that you respect him and that you are willing to share the bad things as well as the good things in the relationship.
3
“LET’S JUST NOT TALK ABOUT IT” Fighting is definitely not fun and is stressful, and yes at times you need to just be quite and calm down, but you can’t simply end the discussion in the middle of the conversation and decide that you need to drop it. If you are not feeling well about continuing the argument, make sure to tell your partner calmly that you need a temporary time out and that you will discuss it again later. You also need to make sure that your partner understands that it’s just that you are unable to discuss it at the moment as things are flaring that you are unable to control your temper and that you just need some time to calm down that’s all.
4
“YOU’RE NOT RESPONSIBLE” Telling someone that he is not responsible regardless of the reasons is humiliating and painful. And telling a man that he is not responsible is similar to telling him that he is not man enough for you. Be certain that if you tell him that he is not responsible, things will get extremely complicated because not only will you hurt him, but made it him doubt himself and he way you see him. Instead, you should always make your man believe that you look up to him and that you appreciate his efforts.

“THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT” It is definitely annoying and selfish when you put all the blame on your partner. Arguments and fights create miscommunication and so, you have to be wise when you talk to your partner. You have to understand that regardless of what had happened, it can’t be all his fault. So, instead of proving to him that it is his fault, find a way to solve the problem and explain to him that his behaviour makes you feel uncomfortable and that you are not willing to deal with it. Also, your partner has to know that you too take responsibility for your actions and behaviour, which will make him respect you and would want to take responsibility for his actions as well.
to get over it. Stop reminding yourself and him of his past mistakes, there is a reason why they are in the past.
“REMEMBER WHEN YOU DID SO & SO” Reminding your partner of his mistakes will not make things better; on the contrary, things will get worse and more complicated. During a fight you shouldn’t keep reminding your partner of what he did last time you had an argument or what he did last summer. You won’t make him stop doing whatever he is doing that way; in fact, you are making him want to repeat what he is doing over and over again. You should learn to let things go if you decided to, what happened in the past shouldn’t be a part of the present, you already discussed it and decided

“I’M TIRED OF YOU” Whether you really mean it or it’s just because you are furious at the moment you shouldn’t say to your partner that you are tired of him. Remember, there are things that you say that you can’t take back. Telling your partner that you are tired of him sounds just like “I don’t want to be with you anymore.” If you are unable to discuss things at the moment, tell him that you would appreciate taking some time and talk later about it. Don’t discuss things when you are frustrated because you will say things that you might regret later. “IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME, YOU WOULDN’T HAVE DONE THAT” Making your partner feel guilty is an immature way to make him do what you want him to do. You are telling him that you are not satisfied and he is hearing it that no matter what he did, he will never be able to make you satisfied. Also, you wouldn’t want to direct your partner or make him do what exactly you want him to do, you shouldn’t accept him the way he is and accept his actions. If you have any concerns about his behaviour, you shouldn’t discuss it with him and make sure
he understands that you would feel better if he behaves in a certain way in that particular situation.
9
“YOU’RE JUST LIKE ...” You just can’t compare your partner to anyone be it your ex, your friend, his father or anyone else. Your partner shouldn’t be treated for who he is individually, he is not anyone else. If you compare him to anyone else, you are hurting him and expressing that you don’t see him for him, which will make him be definitive and aggressive. Don’t involve others in your arguments even if you are just comparing attitudes.
10
“I WANT A DIVORCE” This statement is one of the worst things you can say during a fight. No matter how many times you apologize or try to say that you didn’t mean it, your partner will always remember that you said it. The problem is that this statement makes your partner lose trust in you and believe that you don’t care that much to spend your life with them. It proves that you are ready to let go at anytime and that you will say it again next fight. So, make sure that no matter what happens between both of you, don’t ever ask for divorce during a fight unless you really mean it.

ounge speaks with Dr. Majd Naji about the secret behind the massive success of Liberty Dental Clinic in Dubai, the latest dental techniques and how he makes wonders when it comes to whitening. Also Syrian actress Nesreen Tafesh reveals all about her love for acting and Lobna Abdel Aziz plus a glimpse on her latest acting projects.
What makes Liberty Dental Clinic in Dubai the top in the Arab world and the Middle East? In 1999, when we first established Liberty Dental Clinic, we decided that perfecting the finest details must be our main goal. And that was the best decision we ever took. Liberty Dental Clinic is a fully integrated establishment that combines all fields of dentistry under one roof, and having a great team of professionals to form the backbone of our clinic is one of the main keys to its success. As dentists, our work area is limited to a few millimeters on a tooth surface, and that is simply how we treat everything else. The accurate way everything is put together is what makes a huge difference, whether it’s our glamorous designs, friendly staff, or relaxing atmosphere, they are all working in harmony to achieve the best standards and to meet the highest expectation of our prestigious patients. What are the latest techniques in the dental cosmetic field, and how are you able to produce a total dental makeover in two sessions only? It’s called 3N Veneers. 3N is the most recent innovation in the world of dentistry, its high technical quality and biocompatibility makes it the dentist’s gold standard for cosmetic treatments, and it has also been the most requested treatment by all patients specially because of what 3N stands for: No Pain, No Drilling, and No Injections, which
most importantly leaves the patient very comfortable, and gives him the best smile he dreams of in just 2 sessions. We see some celebrities having too flashy teeth that look fake, what is the reason behind that? I don’t usually recommend over-whitened teeth so, I repeatedly try to advice all of my patients about the colour shade that would suit them best and give them the most natural appearance, but after all if they insist on having them too white, then we just have to satisfy them based on their request. What are the biggest mistakes we do to our teeth? And how can we avoid it? Many factors may harm the teeth, but mainly I advice to avoid any foods that are high in citric acid, and to avoid having random bites throughout the day. Instead it’s better to have a standard number of organized meals everyday, and to maintain your teeth clean in between those meals. You’ve dealt with some of the A-list celebrities and public figures in the Middle East, would you share with us some of the names? Almost all of the A-list stars in the Middle East got their teeth treated at Liberty Dental Clinic, but the ones mostly spoken of would be Saad Lamjarred, Kosai Khauli, Mohammed Assaf, Sherine Abdelwahab, Saber Rebai, Assala Nasri, Latifa, Yusra, Nelly Kareem, Mai Ezz El Dine...etc.
What made them trust Dr. Majd Naji in particular? I guess it’s because I have great beliefs in perfection and taking care of the finest details. And keep in mind that we have an incredible team of specialists that work together on every case, which makes the patient comfortable that each professional is providing the best within his specialty, and not just one dentist is doing all the work. How frequently should a patient pay a visit to the dental clinic? It’s recommended to visit your dentist every 6 months to assure that there aren’t any dental caries or gum diseases developing in your mouth. Are there any plans for opening different branches for Liberty Dental Clinic outside Dubai? Just recently, Liberty Dental Clinic opened in Abu Dhabi, and will very soon be opening in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Of course as expected, they will all have the same high standard that all of our patients got used to in our Dubai branch. Tell us about your friendship with the beautiful star NesreenTafesh. Nesreen is one of my dearest friends, she’s a very genuine person with a kind heart, and I’ve always been a fan of her talent even before she visited me and we met in person. I am very happy today that we are both appearing together on the cover of one of the most renowned magazines in the Middle East.

You were born in Syria from a Palestinian father with Saudi origins and Algerian mother, what was the influence of this mixture on you as an artist? My grandmother is Moroccan as well, and besides the fact that I live in Dubai now, this mixture made me accept and absorb any different culture I met and made me accept the other regardless of their background not only in the Arab world, but worldwide. This mixture also encourage me as an actress to participate in project that have different nationalities participating in it. How did your passion for acting came about? My love for acting started since I was a little kid. I used to act on stage in school, and I loved participating in the musical plays. When I asked my father to help me his only condition was that I should finish my studies then carry on which I did. I joined the high institute of theater in Damascus, and I was offered my first role in ‘Rabea Kortoba’ by director Hassan Ali, whom I owe him all the success I’ve reached. You participated in one Egyptian TV serial which was ‘Alf Leila We Leila,’ how was the experience? I enjoyed the experience a lot, it was beneficial for me as it was my first experience in the Egyptian TV serials. I was able through it to go behind the scenes of creating an Egyptian TV serial. I was happy to act in front of great Egyptian actors like Sherif Moneer, Aser Yassin, Amir Karara and Kamal AbouRaya; in addition to, Madline Tabar and Nada Bassyouny. Why didn’t you repeat the experience again? Actually, I was offered a lot of TV serials as well as movies, but I wanted my participation to be influential and to add to my archive as an actress. How long have you known Dr. Majd Naji for? Dr. Majd is a very dear and a close friend to me, he and his family especially his wife Deema are my family in Dubai. How important is the look of the teeth to the beauty of any star? A smile is the key to the heart so, I believe that teeth could change the whole look of the person especially when the star is under the spot light all the time, the smile must be flawless. Who are the stars you wish to act with? I’d love to act with the stars of the golden age of cinema and the black and white movies especially Lobna Abdel Aziz. She is my inspiration and I adore her, she is a strong actress, who is very convincing whether she plays a comedy role or drama. Plus, her beauty and charisma are inspiring of course, it’s sad that she quit acting at the peak of her stardom, but I am glad that she returned again to acting.
Would you ever consider sacrificing your beauty for a role? Of course, I am not a model, after all I am an actress that is what I do so, if I am offered a role of a girl from a poor background or doesn’t look pretty, my role is to present her with the most convenient look regardless of whether I will look pretty or not. How do you see the situation in Syria now? And what are your wishes for the people of Halab? I was born in Halab and it is considered the economical and industrial capital of Syria. My heart is broken of what is going on there especially that Halab is the place that suffers the most despite the fact that the people of Halab love life, art as well as cooking since it is the Arab country that is influenced the most by the Turkish kitchen. I hope things get better over there and I believe that things will get better very soon. What are you working on? Right now I am shooting in Jordan an epic bedouin TV serial ‘El Ekab Wal Afraa,’ where I play the role of Al Afraa, who is a bedoun girl who leads the tribe after the death of her father and falls in love with the man whom she discovers later that he was the one who killed her father. The serial tackles the conflict between vengeance and love, you have to watch it to know at the end who will win. Also, I will shoot a TV serial with director Rasha Al Sharbatgy between Damascus and Beirut called ‘Shouk,’ where I play the role of Shouk, who will surprise the audience because it is a very complicated character.

What was the idea that drew you back in? It was a couple of things. One was just that we kind of were waiting for the world to change a little bit to bring him back into kind of a new era, and it feels like we’re in that now. And this issue of privacy vs. security is such a big topic today that it felt like a good thing to base a Bourne movie around. But the other side of it was just personally for Paul and I, over the years, people would ask us if we were ever going to make another one, and after a while we just decided that that’s a reason to make another movie, that there’s actually an audience that really wants to see it and we shouldn’t take that for granted or turn our noses up at that. It’s really hard to find that in the movie business. There was, a few years ago, talk of a fourth potential film. Did anything from that older idea end up here or is this just a completely new story? No, this is a completely new thing. We had a near miss a few years ago and then just decided it wasn’t the time for us to do it. We stepped away and they tried to build out the Bourne universe and grow it. They’ll probably continue on with that franchise in parallel with ours, but in the interim we had another idea and came back to it and continued on with our story. You’re an Oscar-winning writer and deeply invested in this character. How much back and forth was there before Paul and Chris (Rouse) went off to write the script? We talked a lot, in broad terms and thematically. The last film that we did was very much about the war on terror and so the set pieces were staged in London and New York and Madrid, and those were all the cities that were affected by terrorism directly at that time, so thematically we’re always trying to seat him in a world that feels like the one we’re all living in, and so Paul talked in broad terms about Greece and Athens and that border and migrants and austerity and all these things, and this was a few years ago. He said Greece would really kick off and sure enough, it did, so it felt like the right place to start our movie and to start running the character through these environments that feel like they’re torn from the headlines. Did you have in your head an idea of exactly what the character has been up to since we last saw him? We felt like there were two choices in front of us. One, if we never touched the franchise again, the idea is that at the end of the Bourne Ultimatum he swims away to his freedom and goes off into the sunset, and you assume things work out well for him. But if you’re going to bring him back, you have to believe, I think that five minutes after he swam to freedom, the demons started haunting him and he’s been living this tortured life on the margins, out in the cold. And he’s not somebody who is settled or at peace. If you’re going to have any story at all, you have to believe that things haven’t worked out for him, that in fact he’s haunted by the things that he’s done and there needs to be some kind of reckoning for him. So we came to that conclusion pretty early on and that was our jumping off point. You can’t imagine Jason Bourne relaxing on a sun lounger, ordering another Mai Tai... Exactly! You’re sort of out of story there if he’s been living well for 10 years on the Mediterranean!
Fun to shoot, but not to watch, you have to think... “Our fourth Bourne movie is really about wine tasting! He owns a winery...” I don’t think that would work out for us. For you, having been away from the character for a few years, is he an easy guy to get back into? Yeah, I love the character. I don’t have a hard time running him down. The physical side is the most challenging part. Trying to get back in shape really in a full time job at my age, to try to get fit like that. It’s not a natural state for a 45-year-old. Unless you’re Dwayne Johnson or something. So that was a lot of work. But the emotional side of him, it always felt very accessible to me. Did being in shape for The Martian help with ramping back up to Bourne levels? I had to be in shape for that and then I did a movie in China (The Great Wall), for which I had to be in good shape as well, which then went right into Bourne, so it was an 18-month period where I stayed in shape. But I still had to ramp up. The last eight weeks, when I started picking up the workouts, going back to maybe six days a week and some two-adays there, and tightened the screws on the diet a little bit more. You and Paul feel like you’re not trying to go bigger necessarily, but challenging yourselves each time. What was something you wanted to accomplish this time? Just making sequel that people want to see is really challenging, because it’s a really tricky line that you must walk. You have to know what it is they liked about the franchise in the first place, and give them enough that they feel like they’re getting what they paid for, but not repeat yourself so much that they feel like they’ve already seen the movie. And so there has to be a mix of familiar and new and that’s a hard balance to strike. I think that’s why you see sequels that don’t live up to the predecessors. I think it’s a very tough thing to do. So we had a lot of conversations about not only what had been going on with Bourne, but what, on the practical level, the movie needed to do to satisfy what the audience wanted and become a worthy next chapter to this saga. The Greek riots scene looked like it was incredibly complex to pull off. Was it? Paul can do a riot and a protest as well as anybody. I think because of his background in journalism. He’s covered so many of those, he’s been in the middle of so many and he made Bloody Sunday, which I think is a brilliant example of creating that. So he’s very comfortable staging those types of situations. We had about four weeks to shoot that, it was four weeks of night shooting in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. And we had 500 incredible extras who showed up every night at sundown. They were Spanish, but they learned Greek chants and had so much energy. It would just ignite every time action was called. The Molotov cocktails and throwing rocks... It looked like an incredibly chaotic scene and then someone would scream “cut” though a bullhorn and everything would calm right down. We’d go in and give notes and do it again. They were just really, really energetic, they’d rehearsed and were excited to be in the movie, which made that sequence.
This is your fourth film with Paul. You must have such a rapport on set now… We’re friends, so we’re in touch even when we’re not working together and we’re very comfortable on sets together. The four movies we’ve done together have been very long... I think this one was the shortest and this was 95 days, which is a pretty long movie. So we’ve spent a lot of hours of our lives together on movie sets solving problems, and so we’re very comfortable in those situations together. So it is kind of like slipping into an old routine. How was the shoot this time? This was great. It was just seamless. The last two Bourne movies we did together were 138 and 128 days respectively and so we saved so much time on this one just knowing exactly what we were doing, having a screenplay that we all liked and weren’t rewriting as we were shooting, which definitely can land you in some trouble! So we were able to just bring it in right on time and on budget, and it was a lot of fun. Bourne is on his own a lot in his films. Do you get used to that? I think once the decision was made in the second movie that FrankaPotente’s character would die, Bourne really is on his own. I only have a few scenes in any of these movies with others. And I probably only have about 20 lines in all of this latest Bourne movie! I say a few things to the others, but he really doesn’t talk to many people. And that’s really the way these last three Bourne movies have been. He’s like a Samurai out on his own, so you’ve got all these other characters in a busy hub trying to figure out what Bourne is up to. And Bourne is moving with determination through the world. But I think dialogue is overrated. Some young actors, they get into counting how many lines they have, and I always heard about Clint Eastwood, for instance, going through a script and crossing out dialogue, he always wanted to say less! And I’m of that mindset too, I think if you can convey things without speaking and do it through the storytelling and the filmmaking, it’s always more interesting. Is there a trick to “phone acting” where you’re interacting with the other cast members on headsets, or even a crew member? Usually it’s Chris Carreras, our First AD, and I’ve had so many phone calls with Chris that at this point I’m more comfortable talking to him than another actor! You have a fair amount of fight scenes. How much do you get to do, or even want to do? The fight stuff I really enjoy, so I do pretty much all of that. Unless there are some tough falls, in which case the pros will step in and take those beatings for me. But the choreography is fun to learn and to do and I think audiences really are hip to when it’s not you and when it is you, and so when it comes to any of that fight choreography I always want to do it. And they’re very good about partnering me with really good fighters in all those scenes. A movie fight scene is more like a dance, where you need both people knowing exactly what’s going to happen with the choreography and moving together, or else it just doesn’t look good. As is the case with dance, if you have a really good dance partner, they’re going to make you better. I box in my free time, so I do know how to throw a punch and take one, but it’s really working with people who are much better than me that makes those scenes work.

You get to act with Tommy Lee Jones on the film. You’ve worked together before, so how was it? Tommy Lee cast me in a TV movie in 1994, which was a big deal, because the money I made that summer working on that movie was money that Ben (Affleck) and I lived off of as we were writing Good Will Hunting, so I’ve always been really grateful to Tommy Lee for that job. It was a big, important job for me. So it was great to circle back and work with him again. It was Paul’s idea and obviously he’s a legend, an American treasure and I loved the idea. He’s one of my favourite actors working today, he’s just impossible to take your eyes off of when he’s on screen. And that’s always been our formula for these movies, going after the very best actors that we can get in all of these roles. And that has always elevated these movies in my mind, whether it’s Joan Allen or David Strathairn or Chris Cooper, or in this movie, Tommy Lee or Alicia Vikander or Vincent Cassel, these are world class actors and it just elevates the entire piece. Is Vincent a good fight partner and fun to work with? He’s great. He actually does Capoeira in his downtime and he’s a very talented martial artist and moves really well. But he’s also such a great actor, and that part is always a difficult part in these movies because similar to mine, these Treadstone people don’t talk a lot, so you have to convey a lot saying very little and he’s just so good at that. He’s got that incredible face and he’s so believable. We were lucky to get him.

RENÉE IN BRIDGET ZELLWEGER JONES’S 12
years since we last saw her, Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is back. Time has not necessarily been kind to Bridget – she’s single again, having broken up with seeminglyperfect match Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) – but she’s trying to make the best of it. Unbowed, Bridget is flourishing at work, producing a successful TV news programme, has a great flat, wonderful friends and is, for the most part happy with her life. Now, though, she’s seriously considering getting back out into the dating world, no matter how intimidating a place that has become in the era of social media and apps. Encouraged to just try and have fun, she ends up spending the night with handsome, charismatic billionaire Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), who could be a potential new man in her life. But she also reconnects briefly with Mark. When Bridget becomes pregnant, and isn’t sure which of her suitors might be the father, everything becomes complicated again. Renée Zellweger returns to the role she first played in 2001 for Bridget Jones’s Diary and returned to for its 2004 sequel, The Edge Of Reason. Zellweger talks about reconnecting with the character, the fun she has with director Sharon Maguire and how the filmmakers kept snoopers from learning the movie’s true ending…

Did you think you’d be coming back to Bridget? I had heard there were conversations about perhaps making another film after the second one and it’s an exciting prospect because I’m crazy about this character and everybody involved, so I was excited about the whispers. Did you have any hesitation? Yes, absolutely. I wanted it to matter and if you make a third film based on a character that is beloved by so many people, you want to be careful with it. I feel a responsibility to Helen Fielding that we make something that does not mess with her characters and her world. I wanted to know in the process that the story that we told was based on something substantive and that it was true to the tradition of this character and what she represents. Is she an easy character for you to find? Well, it’s a process like with any character, I suppose. She’s definitely familiar at this point. It’s interesting in this round to try to discover how she’s changed and figure out where she is in her life at this stage, so that was a bit different. It was a new challenge, but the same loveable, fun hilariously imperfect character, so just a joy. Did you feel like you had to re-approach the character since the views of feminism and popular culture has changed a lot since the last film? Was it a familiar place or did you have to rediscover it? Both. It was really familiar for a lot of reasons and the process of preparation was the same except there was a lot to explore and decide how to animate her evolution to this period of time. How she has changed, how she has grown, most importantly how she hasn’t.

Bridget, who is in her 40s, has two men run after her and is still desirable, which sends a positive message to women ofthe same age. Did you think about that? It’s hard for me to say, if I even thought about it in that way. I guess I didn’t, at least not at the time. I was just picking up and catching up with this character that I love. I guess many people who relate to Bridget wonder what she has been doing in her life. It never occurred to me to see where she fits in with that conversation, or that she would not be vibrant and look her best. But it is a positive message... Yes, definitely. And it is a franchise about a woman’s life. Yes. I am happy about that. We have a female writer, female director, female producer and a female-centric film. It makes me smile that people have been responding to it so positively because I think there is a message in that. That these stories are valuable. That women want to see stories about themselves on screen. Stories that they relate to, human stories. Hopefully that is something that tastemakers will recognize and be more supportive of, rather than challenge the conversation or the question whether or not it is valuable. You have Sharon Maguire back this time. What does she bring to it that no one else can? We have a great time together. We share the same sense of humour and I think she shares a lot of Bridget’s sensibilities. So it feels like a really authentic experience when the two of us are really talking about her or making choices about how to play a particular scene or what Bridget might do and we make each other laugh all day long. I don’t think anybody enjoys it quite as much as she and I do! So it’s a really fun day at work and a fun process with her. Colin is back as Mark Darcy. Is it like picking up an old friendship? Completely! It’s very much like a homecoming. Bridget and Mark have a lot of awkward history together. Colin and I have shared awkward moments and uncomfortable filming scenes, so it’s easy going back into the same old awkwardness with Colin. He’s such a wonderful actor and just a warm, lovely person. It was a lot of fun to go back and do this again. Patrick is the new boy. What energy did he bring and was it nice to have different things going on? It was nice to have a fresh energy and a new dynamic. Still competitive and still a rivalry, as has been the tradition with the Bridget Jones films, but slightly different this time, obviously because he’s American and the polar opposite to Mark Darcy in many ways. I love what Jack the character brings out in Mark, I love seeing Mark try to assert himself in ways he never has before. I think we see Colin playing a different kind of comedy than I’ve seen him do in a while, and that was thrilling, in large part because of the dynamic between their characters, so it’s a lot of fun. The shoot seems like it was fun too. Was it good to be back in England? Oh, it’s always good to be back in the UK. It’s like a homecoming. Syrian Refugee Yusra Mardini saves lives
Olympic Syrian Refugee Yusra Mardini who swam for 3 hours in sea to push sinking boat carrying 20 to safety. Mardini joined Rio to represent a team of 10 refugee Olympic athletes. Thirty minutes after setting off from Turkey, the motor on their boat, which was meant for six people but carrying 20, began to fail. Most of those on board it could not swim. With no other alternative, Mardini, her sister and two strong swimmers jumped into the sea and swam for three hours in open water to stop their dinghy from capsizing, eventually reaching Lesbos. “We were the only four who knew how to swim,” she said of the experience. “I had one hand with the rope attached to the boat as I moved my two legs and one arm. It was three and half hours in cold water. Your body is almost like … done. I don’t know if I can describe that.”

MINI EGYPT PRESENTS a limited COOPER S COUNTRYMAN version MINI is presenting a new and exclusive special edition of its COOPER S COUNTRYMAN model in the Egyptian market. The hot variant is clearly recognizable through some exterior and interior refinements, and will be available for a limited time to capture the spirit of the British marque.
The bulked-up crossover which is cruising into its sixth year has proven to be a major success to the BMW-owned marque. Launched in 2010 before receiving a facelift in 2014, MINI COUNTRYMAN’s success was hinged on offering a generous amount of room for both the front and rear seats to suit the lifestyle of the British brand’s customers, let alone accommodating enough luggage for a holiday weekend trip. The cargo room is roughly twice the size of that in the three-door MINI COOPER Hatchback. In this context, the COUNTRYMAN is bigger than the standard MINIs. Though MINI COUNTRYMAN or “the big MINI” has caused arguments among some of the loyal fans; mainly because of its bloaty style, many others saw it as an asset, and this compact crossover SUV was indeed a welcome addition to the line-up range! Statistically speaking, the COUNTRYMAN has become MINI’s second most popular model after the Hardtop variant in the U.S.; in the first year of production, MINI sold almost 50% more units from the first-generation COUNTRYMAN than the CLUBMAN, CONVERTIBLE, and COUPE added together. These unique sales figures gave pointers to the fact that the premium brand’s foray into a new vehicle segment proved a major success story since 2010, both in the U.S. and worldwide. Still maintaining the fun-to-drive, charismatic character, not to mention the somewhat
compact dimensions which have made its siblings so deservedly popular, the MINI COUNTRYMAN is offered in two trim levels: the down-to-earth, base COUNTRYMAN and the more performance-oriented COOPER S COUNTRYMAN. Under the sculpted bonnet of the entry-level COUNTRYMAN version lies a four-cylinder, 122hp 1.6-liter engine with 160 Newton meters of torque delivered at 4250 rpm. However, the sportier variant with the S moniker is powered by a turbocharged version of the previous engine, chugging out 190hp with 240 Newton meters of torque delivered at 4500 rpm. The engine is capable of propelling the car from Zero to 100km/h in just 7.5 seconds. Later, MINI COUNTRYMAN got a JOHN COOPER WORKS version leveraged from a four-cylinder, turbocharged 218hp 1.6-liter engine with 280 Newton meters of torque delivered from 1900 rpm. The latest edition of the COUNTRYMAN range designated especially for the Egyptian market comes packed with many standard equipment. Those features include JOHN COOPER WORKS leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, keyless ignition/entry, adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights for the low and
high beams, premium HARMAN KARDON audio system, Bluetooth Hands-Free Interface, rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle function, sports seats for the driver and front passenger with power-adjustable mechanism, automatic air conditioning, electric panoramic glass roof with sun protection glazing function, sport-tuned suspension, and front passenger airbag deactivation system, among others. Aside from the COUNTRYMAN’s easily recognizable exterior, the special edition COOPER S variant benefits from precious few changes. In addition to 18-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, run-flat tires, roof rack rails, and, above all, the JOHN COOPER WORKS aerodynamic kit. Speaking of the safety features, the newest member of the COUNTRYMAN range is equipped with a standard anti-lock system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), and Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC), among others. Also, the compact crossover SUV can now be specified with six airbags, front belt force limiters and belt tensioners, ISOFIX child safety seat mounting system and a Park Distance Control (PDC) system. Customers can now get the new special edition of MINI COOPER S COUNTRYMAN with this mind-boggling array of features at a very special price for a limited time.
