EMBRACING HUMANITY AT LARGE During the spiritual month of Ramadan I couldn’t stop myself from thinking that our nature as human beings is to do good deeds. Our human nature forces us to be good to one another and to spread positivity, happiness and beauty on earth. This nature sometimes gets mutilated by hatred, envy, jealousy and a lot of negative traits that we absorb along the way of our journey in life. All that could be understood but I believe the real disaster is when a group of human beings give themselves the right to think that people who belong to their race, religion, gender, or nationality are the only people who deserve to live and the rest are ‘the others’. Those ‘others’ don’t deserve to eat, live or even feel secured in their homes. As soon as a person dares to detach himself and his human nature from those

others, then he is not a human anymore he is actually a monster in disguise. The terrorist attack that took place this month in El Minya bus and resulted in the murder of 28 people and the injury of 25 is a disaster by all means. This person who did this crime gave himself the right to do so because he believes as long as those people are Christians they are the ‘others’, and that’s a scary thought. I don’t think a terrorist is only a person with a gun, I think all the people who think that the group they belong to is the only righteous one that deserve to live is heartbreaking because they are terrorists but didn’t get the chance to carry a gun. It betrays our own species as human beings and it is very disappointing. I pray to those martyrs who died and I pray to God as a Muslim in love with humanity at large that there won’t be any more bloodshed.

LOUNGE 14

How did your passion for fashion begin? Actually, it had been long time ago since I was a teenager, I used to draw different sketches of gowns from my own imagination, I used to buy magazines that relate to fashion and watch old movies where I always find how fashion was at that times. However, my study was completely different from my passion and though I was graduated with honour from the German university in Cairo faculty of pharmacy and worked in a multinational company until I found a place that teaches fashion design so I joined it and I joined different places where I learnt fashion design ,pattern making and draping, it took me long time to study cause I have children until I launched my first collection at Cairo fashion festival season 7 where the collection was my graduation project.

LOUNGE 15

Who supported you in your decision to run your own fashion line? My husband is the one who supported me and who encouraged me to run my own fashion line and he is still the one who stands beside me all the time and pushes me forward, he always says I believe in you and I believe you are different. Tell us more about your spring/ summer collection‌ I decided that my spring summer collection should be different than the previous one, it should have more bright colours that grasp the attention and should suit veiled women, the collection is mainly based on jumpsuits that are too classy, elegant and suits any occasion. What inspires you? Mainly I got inspired by our nature, the beauty that surrounds us is the main inspiration to me, last collection it was inspired by rare flower called kinabalu orchid and this collection from a fish called Betta. Which fabrics do you use? In this collection I used high quality satin and 100% pure silk. Describe May Designs ideal customer‌ When I design any piece I design it in a way that empowers women and make them look different so my ideal customers would be women who have strong personality and dares to look different in any occasion. What is the biggest challenge you encounter when putting your designs into life? I like my designs to look different even if it has simple cut so in every piece you will find details that make every piece special and that is the challenge to me in drawing flats and describing it to the tailor. Who are the celebrities you dream of seeing them wearing your designs? In Egypt, Sherihan ,Angham and Nelly Karim, internationally I would love to dress Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston. What is the favourite piece to your heart? The black jump suit, it always makes me feel as if I am a queen. Who are the designers you aspire to? Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Oscar de La Renta and Stephan Rolland. How do you see the development of fashion industry in Egypt? Now I can see lots and lots of fashion designers emerging and trying to cope with fashion worldwide and that’s by time will raise fashion industry standards more and more in Egypt.

LOUNGE 16

You recently participated in La Mode a Beyrouth – Cairo, what do you think of the fashion week? And how was your collection received? To me it was such an honour to participate in such event, when they called me and asked me if I wanted to join I couldn’t hesitate to join such fashion week in Egypt. I think most of the people who saw my collection on the runway admired it and found it different and classy. One of the comments I received after the show that the collection was really simple and elegant. What are the fashion faux-pas that ladies do in their Ramadan outings when it comes to fashion? Ramadan always fills us with warmth and tranquillity, it is better for women to wear comfortable and, long outfits that make them feel the warmth of such holy month. What are your wishes for May Designs in the future? I always wish that May El Gamel designs be not only a fashion brand in Egypt but also to be known worldwide and targeted by celebrities and people all over the world.

It’s a time to remind each other of those good memories we have as a family and keep the chat light and fun. But having said that, still those gatherings can quickly turn into heated exchanges between spouses, in-laws and other family members, especially when underlying tensions already exists. Now it’s the time to try and forget these problems and stop everyday arguments from escalating. At gatherings we either deal with our own parents or relatives that we haven’t seen for a long time. In-laws are also part of it. The point is you can’t pick family and it’s definitely not your fault that you have that one relative that somehow believes that it’s okay to spot faults in others. Every family has one of those, if not even more. You may have an aunt who always find a way in criticizing your weight, whether by saying you gained a lot or lost a lot of it. When you come across that aunt remember just to smile briefly, remain calm and let her know that it’s great to see her again. Other family members may always like to remind you of your failures or misfortunes. You may have lost your car or even your job and they have to point that out and mention it with all people around. They may even try to seem as if they are actually saying it out of care. If you react to this by being angry and defensive, it can lead to a blowup that turns an uncomfortable situation into something explosive. Instead, you can try to steer the conversation into other topics that you would rather talk about or just give a simple answer and thank them for their care. Being in the holy month, some people take it upon themselves to act like preachers. You may face comments on the way you dress and how it is inappropriate for the month. Again, in such situations you must try to keep your cool and never to respond in an aggressive way. You may reply by saying that you had too much to do and that after all you know that there will only be family

around. Or you may even reply by saying that it’s actually true and you will take care of that next time. This is not being passive about it, but at times like this, it is smarter to avoid any unnecessary drama and arguments, you might win a battle by answering aggressively but for sure you will start a war. Another thing is that maybe there is an old grudge between you and one of your family members that you are concerned will become a source of drama. At a family gathering, people come to have an enjoyable time so they don’t want to get caught up in the middle of old, unresolved issues. Try letting go of the grudge during the gathering and even if things are still unresolved you have to know that family gatherings are not the time to bring them up. If the grudge is fresh, you can try to avoid getting into straight contact with this person and focus your attention to other people. If the other person is the one who approaches and tried to talk about it, avoid reacting upset and recognize that arguing with them will likely lead nowhere. Be as polite as possible and show them that you are not interested in stirring up arguments or drama, yet since Ramadan is a spiritual month it would be great if you agree on another meeting between only both of you to sort things out. Your own parents could be a part of these awkward situations. Couples usually invite their parents and, therefore, their in-laws. Starting by your own parents, it’s very common to face different comments from your mother. It could be about your kids behavior, your preparation for the event, how unorganized you are and telling how it should have been done. The best thing to do at this situation is to remember that your mother loves you and cares a lot about you and that her comments are actually out of this love, so focus on her good intentions and kindness. She wants you to be and look your best and wants everything in this gathering to be in the best possible way. So if she offers some criticism about it, just include her rather than shutting her out. Ask for her help in setting the table and take her opinion about

different styles for setting it. That way you will make her feel happy and appreciated and it will also keep away any hard feelings and stress. When it comes to your in-laws, then that could be a different story. As your parents have to love you, that’s normal and perfectly makes sense, but your in-laws don’t or to be more accurate they don’t have to and it’s not within them that they should. Accept the fact that your in-laws aren’t your parents and won’t follow the same rules. Try to think ‘different’, not ‘better’ or ‘worse’. In order to make this work, you should pass over and let go of small issues that takes place, and negotiate and smartly make your way through key issues. Try to see the situation from your in-laws point of view, and even if you don’t agree with it like a big person. For example, you may be invited at their place and there is a certain kind of food that you don’t like and never eat and your mother in-law knows that for a fact. Nonetheless she makes it when you are coming. In situations like this one, you should take it lightly and even laugh about it saying that she is so persuasive that you are even starting to like that food. You may also just avoid the whole thing and eat other kinds without mentioning the issue at all. You have to put in your mind the relationship between your spouse and his/her parents; you have to be sensitive, caring and respectful. But that also includes you. If others overstep boundaries, it is OK to assert yours, but again, respectfully. At the end of the day, you have to know that these gatherings are just for a few hours so try to make the best out of it. You should remember the true essence of the holy month and of the gatherings. It is about sharing happy and joyful times, regain some missing bonds between family members, and it could be even a chance to clear any misunderstandings and lead to reconciliation between those who have any disputes. So, just make the food, prepare the table, and welcome everyone with a true loving smile.

SARA SALAMA

“Normal is Boring” a

mira Tharwat talks to Sara Salama, who managed in a very short time to capture our hearts. The Sagittarius starlet reveals all about her father influence on her as an actress, how she likes to stand out and the secret behind her love for Nelly Karim. All that plus her role in this Ramadan’s most anticipated serial ‘Le Ala Ser’...

LOUNGE 38

Tell us more about you... Actually being a Sagittarius is what describes me in a nutshell; I love life, outgoing and try to get the best out of my life, I hate depressing people and I love to travel a lot. How did your study to Mass Communication affect your acting skills? Actually it had nothing to do with acting; what influenced my acting skills positively is ballet dancing since I was a kid. It taught me not to fear performing in front of people, and to know how to stand in front of cameras and on stage. and what was the influence of your father Ahmed Salama on you as an actress? My father influenced me a lot; I used to go with him during shooting and stand backstage and watch him acting, he even used to rehearse with me his role. It enriched my acting skill with experience. You dyed your hair purple in one of your extraordinary photo sessions to how extend you like to try new things? I hate ordinary, being expected is boring that is why I love to change my look a lot. It even affects my roles, I would love to do extra ordinary roles, I dream of a role like the one Souad Hosny played in ‘El Herman’ movie; to play the role of a schizophrenic character. I actually did a role close to it in my latest movie ‘Akhlaa El Abeed’ but it was a feature of the character, we didn’t go in depth. Though your massive success you rarely appear in any interviews why? I actually feel that I appear a lot! I hate to talk a lot I prefer to work more and show people my talent rather than talking all the time without performing anything.

LOUNGE 39

You even were expected to appear live in El Ashera Masan with TV personality Wael El Ebrashy but you didn’t show up... Yes It happened and I was really disappointed and angry because of Mr. Wael response and what he said on air about me being irresponsible; back then I was in the hospital and I had chicken pox which could be deadly if it comes to adults, my whole body was full of moles and I was in a terrible condition, it took the hospital a while to figure out what was wrong with me. I don’t like to respond to accusations but this is the first time to explain myself regarding this incident. I would never set a date for an interview on air and just don’t show up unless there is something fatal. Describe your prince charming? I always believe that marriage and love is fate; it just happens you can’t set a date for it or write down a description of your future hubby. However, I would feel pleased if the person I fell in love with is good looking (smiles), tender, a man of deeds not just words and of course understands the nature of my work being an actress. Who are the actors you dream of working with? I would love to work with Ghada Abdel Razik, and of course Adel Imam; actually I was supposed to participate in his TV serial but it didn’t work out however, I wish with all my heart to act with him soon. Tell us more about your role in “Le Ala Seer” serial which is expected to be aired this Ramadan... I don’t want to reveal all about the role but for now let me tell you I play the role of one of Nelly Karim’s family members; it is unlike any of the roles I’ve done before, she betrays people and that is it for now (smiles), you can watch the serial to know more about the story. How was the atmosphere behind the scenes working with Nelly Karim? Actually Nelly Karim is my role model and since I used to ballet dance when I was young I saw her a lot and I dreamt a lot of dancing with her on stage, till I grew up and now I am acting with her. She is the reason I accepted the role of the TV serial and I feel that in real life we have a lot of things in common.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN DURING FASTING Cleanliness The first step of the skin care is cleaning, and whether in Ramadan or not we must avoid cleansers that contain soap which may lead to severe skin dryness and sensitivity. In Ramadan it is preferable to choose soap free cleansers that contain moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin or paraffin to help keeping the water inside the skin. It is preferable to use cleansers twice daily.

Skin is the mirror of the general health of your body, and having a bright skin is the dream of all women. However, during the holy month of Ramadan, skin tends to get dehydrated quicker than usual. Long hours of fasting, combined with hot weather and a lack of fluids, can cause dryness especially in the region around the nose and mouth, lips crack and black halos appear around the eye. As a Dermatologist, I’m always asked about how to keep my skin healthy during Ramadan. Check out these seven tips to keep your skin radiant in Ramadan.

LOUNGE 42

Peeling Peeling is important for both dry and oily skin. For dry skin, it removes dead skin cell making your skin smooth and shiny. While for oily skin, it reduces oily layer, blackheads and impurities that clog the pores, leading to appearance of acne. It also plays an important role in reducing wrinkles and brown spots. The peeling creams often contain alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which is a group of fruit acids including glycolic acid, citric acid and lactic acid. Glycolic acid is the most commonly used and it works by breaking the bonds that connect the dead and dry cells to the skin surface. It also moisturizes the skin and stimulates the production of collagen inside it, so it is used in creams and moisturizers. It is not preferable to use harsh scrubs as they may damage new cells. Use peeling creams once or twice a week.

Toner It is used daily after cleanser to remove the residue of the cleanser and make up. It acts as pore astringent and also moisturizes the skin. Each type of skin has its own “toner” and you must make sure it is alcohol-free. Rose water can be also used as a natural toner to your skin.

3

Around the eyes Black halos under the eyes increase during the month of Ramadan due to stress and lack of sleep hours. Skin around the eyes is the thinnest throughout your body as the fat layer located under the skin in this area is very thin, and it grows thinner with age. Being thin, the capillaries become more visible, which increases the dark color in this area. Also, the presence of bulges under the eye adds to the appearance of these halos. This area needs special attention due to its extreme sensitivity. It is preferable to use gel preparations that contain antioxidants such as vitamin C and Retinol (help to renew cells and reduce fine lines) and Vitamin K which strengthen the wall of capillaries reducing the appearance of black halos.

4

Water, Water, Water It is essential to drink plenty of water to prevent your body and skin from dehydration, especially during Ramadan. Water also helps preserve your skin’s elasticity and protects you against the early appearance of wrinkles. Drink as much as 8 glasses between your Iftar and Suhour.

5

Sunblock Ramadan is still coming in the summer this year, so sunscreen is very important. I would like to point out that sun protection is important throughout the year but is becoming increasingly important in Ramadan “Skin that lacks fluid is more affected by the sun”. Sunscreen is available in the form of cream, lotion, gel, liquid or sprays, and is generally made up of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. It is recommended to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and for oily skin it should be oil free.

6

Moisturizers Moisturizing is a very important step in the holy month because of what I said earlier that the skin suffers from severe dehydration and dryness. Normally, skin loses about half a liter of water per day and of course the effect of this loss is much more in the days of Ramadan. Moisturizers are important for all types of skin including oily skin, since most preparations used to reduce skin oiliness and treat acne lead to dry skin. The composition of moisturizing cream varies depending on the type of skin. In the case of oily skin, make sure that the product is completely free of oils and does not cause the emergence of acne (Noncomedogenic) and does not cause allergy (Hypoallergic). During Ramadan, I would recommend to choose the moisturizers containing Sorbitol, Glycerine, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and Panthenol. If you have dry skin, look for Beewax and Urea in the ingredients of your moisturizer as they help in removal of superficial dead cells. Moisturizers containing antioxidants and vitamins such as vitamin A and C are recommended as they protect your skin from the harmful effects of free radicals and regenerate new healthy skin cells. It is also preferred to use of creams containing Manganese which improves blood circulation of the skin and thus helps it to shine. The skin moisturizers are used twice a day after cleaning. Lips in the month of Ramadan dry and crack, which leads to injuries and bleeding in some cases, so you should use lip moisturizer several times a day. The lip moisturizer consists of beeswax, Vaseline or cocoa butter. Zinc-containing types (Zinc Oxide) are preferred as they provide protection from the sun as well.

7

Good to Remember Don’t forget to include fresh fruits and vegetables which add colour and variety to your Ramadan menu as they are rich in vitamins and minerals and are required for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated.

Heart Attack Risk with Painkillers Starts within a Week: Study Common painkillers such as ibuprofen and naproxen are already known to raise people’s risk of a heart attack. Now a new study shows the risk comes within the first week of using the drugs. The study doesn’t mean that everyone should avoid taking the pills to treat headaches, lower fevers and reduce aches and pains, but does suggest people who know they have a bigger-than-average heart attack risk should avoid long-term use and high doses, the researchers said.

Avoid thirst and dehydration this Ramadan

Fasting during Ramadan is generally tolerable in terms of abstaining from food but it is abstaining from water, especially in hot countries, is what makes it a struggle. It can strip the energy out of a person especially in the heat. Dehydration, however mild, can bring about uncomfortable symptoms such as headaches, disorientation and fatigue. Anyone fasting should be drinking at least eight to 10 glasses of water between iftar and suhoor, and you have to distribute it. Take the first cup as soon as you break the fast. After that, fluids could be taken in the form of soups, juices, green tea or plain water.

Fasting triggers stem cell regeneration of damaged, old immune system

In the first evidence of a natural intervention triggering stem cell-based regeneration of an organ or system, a study shows that cycles of prolonged fasting not only protect against immune system damage -- a major side effect of chemotherapy -- but also induce immune system regeneration, shifting stem cells from a dormant state to a state of self-renewal. The study has major implications for healthier aging, in which immune system decline contributes to increased susceptibility to disease as we age. the research also has implications for chemotherapy tolerance and for those with a wide range of immune system deficiencies, including autoimmunity disorders.

BENEFITS OF EATING

NUTS IN

RAMADAN w

hen our ancestors associated eating nuts with the holly month of Ramadan it was not in vain. This month Lounge brought you the magical health benefits of eating nuts and its ability to redeem the vitamins the body loses during the fasting hours.

Almonds It is a great replacement to dairies; calcium-rich almonds are a good choice to ensure you’re getting enough of this bone-building mineral. Almonds are also high in vitamin E, a nutrient which helps to improve the condition and appearance of your skin. For some extra heart help, swap flaked almonds for the whole nut - with the skin intact - because the almond’s skin is full of heart-protecting compounds called flavonoids.

Cashews Because they contribute a good level of protein and are a useful source of minerals like iron and zinc, cashews make an excellent replacement to meat. They’re also rich in the mineral magnesium, which is thought to improve recall and delay, age-related memory loss. Add a handful to a vegetarian stir-fry or use as nut butter on crackers or bread.

LOUNGE 46

Pistachios Being especially rich in vitamin B6, which is important for keeping hormones balanced and healthy, pistachios are a good option for those with problem periods. They’re the only nut to contain reasonable levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that play an important role in protecting the eyes. Pistachios also contain potassium and fibre - in fact a 30g serving has more than three times that supplied by the equivalent weight of plums.

Hazelnuts Opt for hazelnuts if you’re concerned about high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid which has been associated with heart problems as well as conditions like Parkinsons. Hazelnuts are a good source of folate which is an important B-complex vitamin that helps prevent megaloblastic anemia, and most importantly, neural tube defects in the newborn. Good news for the expectant mothers!

Walnuts Their superior antioxidant content means walnuts are useful in the fight against cancer. They’re also a good source of monounsaturated, heart-friendly fats, and studies show they help to lower the bad form of cholesterol (LDL). Finally, they’re rich in omega-3, so they’re a great alternative if you don’t eat oily fish.

OMAR SAMRA & OMAR NOUR TO DEFY THE ATLANTIC IN PURSUIT OF A NEW ACHIEVEMENT

Egyptian Adventurer Omar Samra and professional Egyptian triathlete Omar Nour will take on one of the world’s toughest adventures - rowing 5,000 nautical kilometers from the Canary Islands to Antigua, unsupported, as part of the Atlantic Challenge. The team will depart from the Canary Islands on 12 December 2017.
