WHAT SOCIETY EXPECTS WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING.. Being a mother is not a profession, it’s a way of life, a change of priorities; from being number one in your life to the second or the third one, and above all it is a great responsibility to be the one who is supposed to look after a fellow human being; from how you should take care of his well being to him growing up to shaping his mind, enlightening him and forming his conscious to be a righteous person. However, to people, this is a taken for granted mission, as if it is not enough to be a good mother because that is for sure something you will master by nature (which is not true). Society’s expectations nowadays to the modern form of a mother are to never settle or be satisfied by being a mere mother. A mother can’t live peacefully focusing on her baby or else she would be called a stay home mom, a worthless empty headed woman, who has nothing on her mind but diapers smelling terrible herself. She has to go far beyond that and accomplish herself. It is great to be ambitious, a person who never settles for less and has a goal in life apart from raising her kids because at the end of the day they will grow up and have their own

lives, but to have society forcing you to go under the pressure of being a working mom to fit its own standards is what is not acceptable. I always support women’s freedom of choice; you have the ultimate right to choose what suits you and what you feel comfortable doing without being judged, looked down upon or treaded as a second degree being. If you want to work and know that this is what makes you feel good about yourself and reflects on your baby for sure then, go for it, and if you feel satisfied by being a stay at home mother then, do that and make sure that this doesn’t make you any less than working moms. As long as you studied both choices carefully with the pros and cons of each then, you are capable of making your own choices, and don’t look back at the society. In both cases, you will be condemned either by being looked down upon as a woman with no ambitions (if you stayed at home), or by being a selfish mother (who works to support her ego), make your own choices, and forget about society’s expectations, it is your life and your child’s life so, manage it the way you like.

LOUNGE 14

Tell us more about you… I’m a 27 year old Aries, and I studied Journalism in MSA University. How did your passion for fashion come about? I have always had a fashion passion since I was a little girl. I always liked colourful clothes and have always been keeping up with the latest trends. Why did you choose sportswear in particular? Creating a sportswear line has always been my dream. It all started when working out became a big part of my life and a necessity in my daily routine, just then I realized that in Egypt we don’t have a variety of sportswear. Also, working out has become a daily duty to many people over the past few years as they became more educated about sports. I wanted to design something that’s different, fashionable and durable; something you would enjoy wearing and still feel good about yourself in it.

How do you manage to compete with famous sportswear brands? I have just started my line, and I don’t think I’m in a competition with the brands here in Egypt since my designs and concept are totally different. Describe Monni-K’s ideal customer… My ideal costumer is any woman who likes working out, I’m not targeting a specific age group, it’s basically for women who want to look effortlessly fabulous during their work out. Which fabrics do you use? My fabrics vary and are mixed. They are breathable and dry quickly; they are also soft and have tremendous stretch so they are easier to move in.

LOUNGE 16

What is the biggest challenge you encounter when putting your deigns into life? I had difficulty finding the right fabrics, my biggest challenge is communicating my designs with my manufactures. I have had many samples done that looked nothing like the sketches I have drawn. In general, how do you see the development of fashion industry in Egypt? I have noticed that there are many Egyptian designers that have amazing collections yet, their resources are limited. Some of the designers, in my opinion, are really up to the international standards if not better. The problem is that people tend to prefer international brand names although there are a lot of unique pieces that they can find in local brands.

What are the fashion faux-pas that ladies do when hitting the gym? I think there’s no right or wrong in what ladies wear as long as they are comfortable in, but of course are still wearing materials that are suitable for working out. I love to encourage individuality. What are your wishes for Monni-K in the future? Are there future plans for expanding the brand to design clothes or evening gowns? My vision for Monni-K is to expand in the Middle East and eventually introduce men’s sportswear and kids’ sportswear. How can people order Monni-K designs? People can order via instagram or Facebook @monnikofficial, or through the website www.Monni-K. com

relationships

IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR MOTHER most of us find difficulty in having a healthy relationship with

our mothers. Having a healthy relationship doesn’t mean that you only talk to her, but it means that you have a deep and strong relationship that balances between friendship and leadership. If you are having difficulty dealing with your mother, Reem El Shennawi brings you some tips to improve your relationship with her to get through the ups and downs between both of you…

LOUNGE 24

Change your attitude We can’t change ourselves, but we can change our attitudes, which are the reason behind most of our arguments. Our responses and reactions can make an argument either end peacefully or turn into a huge fight. Alter the argument and think of it that if you change your attitude, your mother will respond calmly. During fights, think of your mother as the one who truly loves you and no matter how tough she can be at times or how much she seems to irritate you, she is still the one who wants the best for you. Think about the positives and neglect the negative sides that you don’t like, and when you both calm down, speak to her calmly and politely about your concerns. Communicate Lack of communication is a common challenge with moms and daughters. Speaking to our mothers is an essential way to keep the relationship blooming. Tell her when you are happy, sad, upset.. etc. learn to talk to her and be able to keep healthy conversations between you. The most important thing to maintain a close relationship is to communicate on a regular basis. No matter how busy you are or she is, manage to have some time to sit together and talk, or even laugh, which is still a way of communicating. Share your secrets No matter how much you hear it or much you know it, your mother will always be your best secret keeper and will always remain your best friend. Trust your mother, tell her your deepest secrets and listen to her advice, she knows better. Having your personal life

doesn’t mean that you can’t tell her things and share with her your thoughts and doubts. Be willing to receive advice We tend to not accept advice from our mothers as they seem to us like interference or criticism, which is absolutely not true. Mothers feel obliged to give advice because they know better; learn to listen to her advice just like you listen to your friends’ advice. Why do we listen to our friends who certainly don’t know as much as our mothers do? Receiving her advice doesn’t mean that she is interfering in your life and doesn’t mean that you are not capable of being independent, it means that you trust her and trust her opinion. Listen to her carefully, welcome her insights, discuss it with her and come together to an agreement, you have nothing to lose if you at least try. Solve problems quickly The worst thing you can do is to not deal with a conflict quickly; don’t ever go to bed without resolving a conflict between you and your mother because that can create a bigger gap between you. Take some time and give her some space to calm down, but then go back to discuss it together and make up. No matter what happens or how big the argument is, deal with it and don’t let things grow. Put yourself in her shoes Your mother is not you; she is a different person who was raised in a different environment and different generation with different values. When speaking to your mom, put yourself in her shoes and think about what she has to say from her own perspective, which will absolutely keep the communication between you and will make you avoid many negative consequences. Learn to forgive You can’t maintain a healthy relationship if you are unable to forgive. We all do mistakes and our mothers are human beings you can do mistakes too, forgive your mother for her mistakes just like she does. Don’t let negative feelings destroy you and your mother. Forgiveness is the key to a happy life,

again, tell her how you feel and learnt to let things go. Balance independence & intimacy Whether you are too dependent on your mother or you are too independent that you don’t want her to interfere in your life both are wrong. You should balance between being independent and being close to your mother. Talking to her and asking for advice and having your own personal life are two different things; you definitely have to take your own decisions in life and chose what suits your personal life, but still manage to stay connected to her. Take advice, talk to her, share your thought and tell her that you need to take some decisions alone, but you would still appreciate her guidance. On the other hand, being too close to your mother to the extent that you are unable to make any decisions without her is still another problem. You are not only creating a problem to yourself but to her as well, you will always be depending on her in every single detail and she will get used to this fact, but eventually you both will get tired. So, don’t be too much for a thing, learn to have your own identity with her blessings and support. Hang out together Spending time with your mother away from home deepens and strengthens your relationship. Finding common interests or engaging in a hobby together or even just going out for shopping or for lunch will make you both understanding, and will create a friendship between you and thus, communicate better. Manage to spend a day together every week and make it a habit, you will soon find yourself enjoying the time spent with your mother out more than you think. Learn to speak your emotions Unfortunately, most of us are unable to show our love to our family. Even though they know much we love them, we have to tell them that we do because hearing it is way better than knowing it. Telling your mother/daughter that you love her is as important as being

close to her. Shower her with your love and learn to tell her how you feel about her even when you are upset with her. Speaking your emotions will create a bond and will make life much easier between you because you won’t leave a room for interpretations.

Are You Ready for a Second Child With the current situation and the

increase in the prices having a second child could be a burden for some people. If you are wondering whether you are ready for having a second baby or not, take this quick quiz and find out…

How old is baby? Less than a year old 12 to 18 months old 18 months or older How old are you? Under 30 Early 30s Late 30s to early 40s What are your finances like? Its pretty tight right now, who knew babies need a huge budget? Plus, we’ve got to think about our mortgage and car payments. It’s hard for us to save a lot right now. We’ve been slowly putting away extra money for our retirement, baby’s college tuition and more. We’ve been pretty good with our budget lately. We’re doing really well right now. We’ve been saving money and have been able to budget in a smart way. Plus, we have money to do fun things like go on vacation or buy a new car.

LOUNGE 26

Is your relationship with your partner still going strong? Who? We barely get to see each other because we’re always busy, with work, baby and errands. We’re getting used to juggling family life and couple life. We’ve made time for a few date nights here and there. Not to brag or anything, but our relationship is as strong as it was prebaby. We’ve got a routine down, make time for each other and have a babysitter on speed dial when we’re planning our weekly date nights. Do you both want another baby? One of us is more enthusiastic about adding to our family than the other is. It leads to some awkward discussions. I think we’ve both finally decided that we do want another child; we’re just not sure if now’s the right time. I’m dreaming of names, and my partner is making nursery sketches. We’ve been talking about the possibility a lot.

When you try to talk to your first child about another sibling, how does he react? With a tantrum of epic proportions. Let’s just say he’s a little jealous, and the baby isn’t even here yet! We think he’s warming up to the idea of being a big brother. He’s getting excited about the possibility of being an older sibling. Are you kidding? He’s the one who was begging us for a little brother or sister in the first place! What do you do when you see your friends with their newborns? I’m glad we’re past that stage and I can get some sleep now! I love holding their babies, but I’m more than happy to give them back when they get colicky. I get so jealous; I’m so nostalgic for when my kids were that little!

Might Want to Wait a Little Longer We’re not saying everything has to be 100 percent perfect for you to have another baby (it probably never will be!), but your finances and home life should be somewhat stable, or you’re in for a ton of stress. If it seems like you and your partner are being pulled in different directions and barely have time for anything (like each other!), you might want to think about waiting awhile before you get pregnant again.

Mostly Bs

You’re Almost There… Think of it as a kind of limbo: You’re getting there, but you’re probably not quite ready yet. You’ve gotten into a good routine with juggling baby, work and home life, but there’s still some room for improvement. You and your partner might have the new-parent thing down, but your relationship is still adapting to being a family of three. And as for your finances, you might not be broke, but if you’ve just recently taken control of them, that’s yet another reason to wait a few more months. You’ll want your budget to be solid before you add more to your plate.

It’s Time Congrats! It seems like you’re ready for baby number two! Stable relationship with your partner? Check. Budget under control? Check. How to overcome Postnatal Depression

Dr. Georgette Savvides t his Mother’s day issue, Lounge welcomes back Dr. Georgette Savvides, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, from her maternity leave and we thought there is no better time to ask her about Postnatal Depression that a lot of new moms experience, where Dr. G shares with us the main symptoms, the causes and how to get over it.

Postnatal depression is a kind of depression that new parents experience after delivery. It’s more frequent than you’d think, as 1 in 10 women experience it after giving birth to a baby. It is worth pointing out that this type of depression is often mixed up with baby blues. However, baby blues are when women find themselves feeling down, and they become tearful or anxious all the time. Usually, these feelings disappear within the next two weeks after delivery. On the other hand, postnatal depression goes on for a longer time and it could occur any time within the first year after giving birth. Moreover, it happens gradually and gets worse with time.

What is the secret behind Dr. Mohamed Emad’s major success? There is no secret, the whole idea is that we’ve put a lot of effort into it. Also, we were up to date with all equipment used in the United States. We don’t just get them and use them immediately, the whole staff however gets trained on using them. Like for example the 3D computer, I sent the whole staff to Germany to take a course on how to use it. Also, the most important thing to me is know who to compete with, we are actually competing with doctors in Europe and the United States, and we are always in touch with them. Behind every successful man there is a woman, does that apply to you? Of course it does, my wife stood by me. She had to bear a lot like me being busy all the time. I have been working for 16 hours a day for the past 12 years. You are the dentist of a lot of celebrities in the Arab world, would you share with us some of the names? Yes, Dalia El Behery, Heba El Abasiry, Marihan Hussien, Eman El Asy, Salwa Khatab, Ahmed Bedeir, Maged El Masry, and Razan. Also, football players like Mohamed Salah, Ahmed Fathy, Mohamed Barakat, Wael Gomaa, Ramadan Sobhy, Hossam Ghaly and Sherif Ekramy. What do you think is the reason behind this trust in your Dental Center? Honestly, experience. And by experience I mean that we do the thing that is suitable for the patient whether it’s suitable for his profession as an actor or suitable for his attitude. I have done 3300 cases of cosmetic dentistry during the last 15 years so, I have a lot of experience.

What are the biggest mistakes we do to our teeth? And how can we avoid it? The biggest mistake is that we get afraid from dentist so, if we have a minor problem, we leave it till it becomes a major one. We have to trust that dentistry now is not like it was in the past, and it’s not something to be afraid of. We have to know that it won’t be painful and at the same time if we have a minor problem, we will be able to treat it before it becomes a major one. What is the best method for whitening? Veneers are the best and latest method for whitening, but it includes many kinds so, we have to select the kind that is suitable for us, this is the most important thing. Tell us more about your most talked about 3D technique… The idea of the 3D is to make a digital design for a certain smile using a computer system. This makes the result accurate and perfect. The idea is not just to have a 3D device, but to be trained on how to use it. Also, with the 3D technique the patient is able to see the result before it’s done and can see whether it suits his features or not. Is there a permanent whitening technique? Or does any method require constant visits to maintain the colour? Whitening is permanent, but we have to do normal checkups every 6 months. What are the main reasons that cause teeth to turn yellow? The bad habits of eating, drinking coffee, tea and dark sodas and smoking. Not taking care of our teeth in general. When do you recommend making a bridge? And when does implants become a better solution? Bridge is not recommended at all now in all cases. The best thing is to have implants. Besides being one of the top dentists in the Arab World, what are your hobbies? I love music so much. I used to play piano and I still do, but not as often as before. I am a good listener to music. I also love acting, and I actually took acting courses because I love it. I did a small part as a doctor in Dalia El Behery’s last series. What are your dreams for Whitey Dental Center in the future? My dream is to have branches outside Egypt all over the Arab World.

LOUNGE 34

Tell us more about you… I was born in May1986. I graduated from Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University, and then I studied Low-budget Filmmaking for one year at the El Nahda - Jesuit Cairo. My zodiac sign is Taurus. How did your first acting contribution come about? I love cinema just as much as I love directing, acting, cinematography and screenwriting and gradually all of these things started to happen together. I started my career in theater moving across to some short films, and then I worked with my father on the film Asrar El Banat. After I have directed, acted in, written and filmed some short films, my first big breakthrough was working with my father on the film Asafeer El Neel in 2010 and this is how it all started. Tell us more about your role in Ali, the Goat and Ibrahim… What I liked most about this film was that Ali and Ibrahim are two sides of the same coin, one is loud and the other is quiet, one is an open book and the other is oblivious of his surroundings. What I liked also was that, you know, Ibrahim is cursed and there is a mystery behind that, so this is actually what excited me to play his character. Many young people, from our generation, from different backgrounds, can see that he is cursed because of social, economic or even political issues, so Ibrahim’s curse or disorder is a symbol of all that. Your role in Mawlana was extraordinary as well; did your father, director Magdy Ahmed Ali, play a role in your nomination? Basically, when my father first told me that he is going to turn this novel into a film, and that he is writing the script, I read it right away, and when I read about the character, I told him if I found a better fit for this role other than myself, I will let you know, but I don’t think so….I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, that was meant as a joke. The truth of the matter is that I insisted on playing this character, and with complete honesty, I didn’t mind auditioning for the role among other actors, but my father was immediately convinced that I will be the best fit. Did you read the novel? Yes of course, I read it right away.Once my father first told me that he is going to turn it into a film, and that he is writing the script, I read it right away. What attracted you the most to play the role? I actually liked the film itself more than the character. The film draws a sword against darkness, fallaciesand backward-looking beliefs, so I wanted to be a part of such a project, regardless of how big is the part. Didn’t you worry that the role you played in Mawlana broke a lot of taboos? When I felt worried, I remembered that I’m strongly supported, that I’m acting opposite real artists, besides the idea of taking this responsibility as an actor,a part that I’ve been wanting to play for a long time and finally got the chance to play it, made me play the part and accept the consequences.

You went to Dubai International Film Festival with two movies Mawlana and Ali, the Goat and Ibrahim, how did you feel about that? I was really very happy about it, because I considered it as a partnership, not a competition. Such a festival taking place at the end of the year, screening a selection of films that share together a celebration, a festival, they are actually celebrating being the best films of the year, so this to me was more of a partnership than a competition, so I was happy about it. Your photo with fashion designer Mohanad Kojak caused a lot of controversy, what is your response to that? My response is that Mohanad is a real artist, he expresses himself freely, he breaks free from limitations that many others wish to break, but they couldn’t even come close to it, and I was one of these people. Kojak’s designs were what made me go through this bold experience, so at the Dubai festival, I wore two or three of his suits, and at Mawlana’s premiere, I chose the suit myself and I felt it’s going to be weird, crazy, and shocking, but with a touch of loveliness and beauty, and I wasn’t expecting to get any of these reactions at all. I see that the reactions weren’t to the suit, but they were to Kojak himself, because the first comments on the photos, people were using bad language trying to disrespect this great artist and human because of his looks, and of course this rudeness is unacceptable, although it’s expected that some people withold fashioned mentalities would react this way. Any chance you will change your look with the beard? In other words, would you sacrifice it for a role? Yes, certainly. I let it grow for the roles I play, and I want to shave it by the way, I shaved it for Mawlana. How do you stay fit? I have been practicing Yoga for years now, I’m on a healthy diet and I avoid anything that can affect my health. What is your favorite perfume? I don’t wear perfumes, and I’m against it. What is your favorite hotspot in Cairo or worldwide? Saint Catherine, south Sinai. Who are the stars you still wish to act with? No one in specific and I learn from bad experiences more than the good ones. The actor you aspire to be like the most? There is an actor that I admire so much, his name is Vincent Gallo, an American actor, director, photographer, editor, producer and writer. I love his movies, he’s crazy, special, and free, and his movies inspire me so much. What are you working on… I’m currently working on two TV series,Aa’laSe’r with Nelly Karim and Hata La Tofea’ Al Shams by director Mohamed Shaker, and the films The Treasure by Sherif Arafa and LeilKhargy by Ahmad Abdalla. I’m also finishing my film La Ahad Honak, which I wrote, directed and filmed, and it will be screened by the end of this year. I’m looking for a respectable festival to screen it.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

‘EGG FREEZING’ b

eing a mother doesn’t require a certain age anymore, thanks to the latest medical techniques, which helps any woman who want to be a mother to make her dream come true regardless of the health, social or economical issues she faces that might come between her career ambition and being a mother. Dr. Monika Chawla, the Reproductive Endocrinologist and Fertility specialist at Fakih IVF, talks to us from Dubai about all what we need to know about egg freezing..

What is the process of egg freezing? While sperm and embryos have proven easy to freeze, the egg is the largest cell in the human body and contains a large amount of water – when frozen, ice crystals form that can destroy the cell. This necessitates dehydrating the egg and replacing the water with an ‘anti-freeze’ prior to freezing, in order to prevent ice crystal formation. This is done using cryoprotectants, which replace most of the water within the cell and inhibit the formation of ice crystals. Eggs are frozen using either a slow-freeze, slow-cooling method or a newer flashfreezing process known as vitrification. Vitrification requires a higher concentration of cryoprotectantsbut is much faster and results in a solid, glass-like cell that is free of ice crystals. Freezing is a phase transition, but as opposed to slow-freezing, vitrification is a physical transition. Realizing this fundamental difference, the vitrification method has been developed and successfully applied in IVF treatment, with the first live birth following vitrification of oocytes achieved in 1999. Vitrification eliminates ice formation inside and outside of oocytes on cooling, during cryostorage, and on warming. Vitrification is associated with higher survival rates and better development compared to slow cooling

LOUNGE 38

when applied to mature oocytes. During the freezing process, the zona pellucida (egg membrane) can be modified, preventing fertilisation. When the eggs are thawed, a special fertilisation procedure is then performed by an embryologist, whereby sperm is injected directly into the egg with a needle rather than allowing sperm to penetrate naturally by placing it around the egg in a dish. This injection technique is called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and is used in IVF. Why would a woman need egg freezing? 1.Those who would like to preserve their fertility until they are ready to start a family. Today, we see many women delaying childbearing due to career and other personal or medical reasons, and then struggling to conceive in later years. Pregnancy rates from frozen eggs will depend on the woman’s age at the time she freezes her eggs, but will not be affected by the age at which she comes back to use them. Therefore, the chance of future pregnancy in women older than 38 at the time of freezing is likely to be lower than that seen for younger women. To date, there are few reports of pregnancies in women over 38 from frozen eggs. This is mostly due to lower age cut-offs in egg freezing studies, and the relatively

low number of women who have come back to use their frozen eggs so far. This is called social freezing. 2.Those diagnosed with cancer, who have not yet begun chemotherapy or radiotherapy. In the short time that is available, stimulation of the ovaries can be undertaken safely and eggs can be preserved. Significant damage to the ovarian follicles can be expected after cancer treatment. 3.Those with religious or other reasons not to freeze embryos during invitro fertilisation may find that egg freezing is a viable option. When should a woman freeze her eggs? The simple answer is to pursue egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, in the prime reproductive years — a woman’s 20s and early 30s — to take advantage of best egg quality and quantity. A woman is born with all of the eggs she will ever have, and over time they diminish in number and cellular quality. This decline explains why a woman in her 40s has only a five percent chance of becoming pregnant each month; her eggs are also more likely to develop abnormal chromosomes after the age of 45. Basic fertility testing, including antral follicle counts and hormone and AMH blood testing, assesses a woman’s ovarian reserve. A

clearer picture of egg quantity and ovarian function may lead a woman to opt for elective fertility preservation. How many eggs are needed to be stored to achieve a pregnancy? Based on preliminary data from our own studies and those of others, egg thaw rates of 75% and fertilisation rates of 75% are anticipated in women up to 38 years of age. Thus, if 10 eggs are frozen, seven are expected to survive the thaw, and five to six are expected to fertilise and become embryos. Usually three to four embryos are transferred in women up to 38 years of age. We recommend that 10 eggs be stored for each pregnancy attempt, and most women of up to 38 years of age can expect to harvest 10 to 20 eggs per cycle. Is egg freezing safe? To date, approximately 5,000 babies have been born from frozen eggs. The largest published study – of over 900 such babies – showed no increased rate of birth defects when compared to the general population. Additionally, results from one study showed no increased rates of chromosomal defects between embryos derived from frozen eggs and those derived from fresh eggs. In 2014, a new study showed that pregnancy complications were not increased after egg freezing. There have also been over 300,000 children born worldwide from frozen embryos using primarily slow-freeze

cryopreservation techniques, without an increase in birth defects. Although these data are reassuring, it will take many years of further study to ensure that babies born from egg freezing technology have no higher rates of birth defects than those conceived via other means. How long can the eggs remain frozen? Based on scientific evidence, as well as clinical experience in achieving pregnancies with frozen embryos – in one case the embryo was frozen for 10 years – we are confident that long-term storage of frozen eggs does not result in any decrease in quality. How is the process done? In order to retrieve eggs for freezing, a patient undergoes the same hormone injection process as invitro fertilization. The only difference is that following egg retrieval, the eggs are frozen for a period before they are thawed, fertilised and transferred to the uterus as embryos. It takes approximately two to three weeks to complete the egg freezing cycle, which is consistent with the initial stages of the IVF process, including 10 to 14 days of hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries and ripen multiple eggs. Once the eggs have adequately matured, they are removed with a needle that is carefully placed through the vagina under ultrasound guidance. This procedure is done

under intravenous sedation and is not painful. The eggs are then immediately frozen. When the patient is ready to attempt pregnancy, which can be several years later, the eggs are thawed, injected with a single sperm to achieve fertilisation, and then transferred to the uterus as embryos. What is the cost of egg freezing? The costs of egg freezing are identical to those of routine IVF. In general, it costs AED 30,000 or USD 8,500 to undergo an egg freezing cycle in the UAE. This estimate includes all testing, monitoring, medications and egg freezing. The egg freezing fee includes the storage fee up to the end of the calendar year. There will be an additional annual storage fee of the next full calendar year. The egg thaw, fertilisation and embryo transfer procedure costs roughly USD 5,000, which is payable at the time of egg thaw. What tests can tell me how many eggs are there in my body? Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) testing is a blood test that is used to find out the number of eggs remaining in the body. The test can be undertaken in any phase of the menstrual cycle, regardless of the time, as unlike other hormones AMH levels do not fluctuate during the cycle. It may help to define a woman’s fertility potential and ovarian reserve, and can also tell a woman about her response when injections are given to stimulate the ovaries.

SKIN DNA GENETIC NEW ERA IN TESTINGA PERSONALIZED

SKIN MEDICINE What is Skin DNA Genetic test?

Skin DNA Genetic test examines 15 genetic markers in 5 categories associated with skin aging. This allows you and your dermatologist to know that you’re at increased risk to certain premature aging conditions, pay closer attention to its warning signs and to tailor preventive health strategies accordingly and take the right steps to protect your skin’s future health and appearance. These 5 main categories are: Firmness + Elasticity: Collagen keeps the skin firm, plump and wrinkle-free. The balance between the process of collagen production and breakdown is totally controlled by our genes. Our genetic predispositions to rapid breakdown of collagen can play a big role in the appearance of premature wrinkling, aging and sagging of the skin. Wrinkling If you’re like most people, then no one has ever told you about glycation. Affecting Collagen and Elastin fibers, glycation is now well recognized to be a leading cause of accelerated skin aging. If glucose in your blood is not metabolized properly, it can bind to your skin’s collagen and elastin fibers, forming abnormal chemical bridges that cause tissue damage. This process, called glycation, causes your skin to become rigid and lose elasticity. Glycation also impairs your skin’s ability to regenerate, which leads to skin laxity, cracking, thinning, redness, and inability to self-repair. This process is also controlled by our genes. Sun Damage + Pigmentation Exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun accounts for 90% of the symptoms of early skin aging, skin damage, and skin cancer. The cumulative effect of repeated sun damage causes epidermal DNA damage, persistent inflammation, and oxidative stress, negatively affecting the health and appearance of your skin. Our genetic predispositions play an important role in determining how your skin can naturally cope under the strains of the sun. Free Radical Damage Free radical oxidation is a process similar to metal rusting or apple turning brown when exposed to air. Free radicals are highly reactive short lived molecules that can damage virtually any molecule in our body – including the important cellular structures found in the body’s largest organ - the skin. Not all people have the same amount of the free radical scavengers (antioxidants). Genetic variations have been found to alter the production of antioxidant protecting molecules.

Sensitivity + Inflammation 5. Ever wonder why your skin becomes sensitive in the winter? Or why your

skin breaks out in the heat? How about developing skin rash after applying perfumes or skincare? Many of these redness and sensitivity issues are instigated by your body’s first primal defense - inflammation. Your genetic predispositions also play a big role in determining the supply, or the over-supply of inflammation production which is one of the most common themes in early onset of aging.

How does it work?

With the help of your dermatologist, and through the detailed test report you will be able to know the strength and weakness of your skin. Based on that, you can have a tailored skin care regimen including topical treatments, oral supplements and medical procedures exactly according to your skin needs. This does mean that you don’t need to go out and buy everything on the list but rather choose a selection of ingredients to use - with the guidance of your dermatologist.

Do I really need to take a Skin DNA Test?

Yes! By gaining insight into your DNA, you can determine your skin’s genetic risks and take the right preventative steps to improve your skin’s future. Even if you followed everybody’s advice to the letter, no-one is able to accurately predict how your skin will age just by looking at you. This targeted approach ultimately helps save you time, money and more importantly focuses your skincare regimen on key areas that are important to your individual skin’s physiology. Skin DNA Genetic test has revolutionized the anti-aging industry. It is a standalone DNA laboratory test that is used to scientifically create a personalized guide that allows you to advance beyond the one-size-fits-all suggestions - using the most suitable skincare ingredients and modalities tailored to your own genetic blue print.

HOTELS EXPERTS in an attempt to celebrate the empowerment of women

and spread positivity, this Mother’s Day, Amira Tharwat brought you the inspiring success stories of two Egyptian women, who made it to the top of the hotel industry. We went up-close and personal with Ghada Beshr, Area Director of Marketing for Sofitel Egypt and Dina Naeem, Area Director of PR Starwood Egypt to give us their tips to other women who want to make it to the top..

DINA NAEEM

AREA DIRECTOR OF PR STARWOOD EGYPT

Tell us more about you.. I am a Cancer born on the 14th of July. I graduated with a bachelor degree in Psychology from the American University in Cairo, and I did my Masters in Marketing Communications Chartered Institute of Marketing UK. Besides being one of the top PR Directors in Egypt, what are your hobbies? I love reading, traveling and watching movies. Besides your work obligations, you attend a lot of events and parties, how do you plan and find the time to stay looking good and presentable on the go? It’s very easy, I just put my smile on, add some lipstick and I’m ready for anything. I also have this thing, I look totally different in each picture, I don’t know the reason, but I’ve always been like that and I like it. You’ve been in the marketing field for quite a while, what are the biggest challenges you encountered to reach such a distinguished position? One of the challenges is the old school vs. the new school techniques. I have always fought for introducing new and creative ways of communicating our messages, which was a big challenge for me, but I always end up

LOUNGE 42

convincing everyone I work with and my boss that it is worth the risk. We were always one step ahead just because we strive for being different. Do you have kids? What do you wish to see them doing when they grow up? Yes, I have 2 daughters: Malak El Hussieny, a professional musician and one of the top social media influencers and I am very proud of her. Tamara is 8 years, and she is moving forward on her sister’s foot. I never thought actually of what I wish for them, all I wish for them is that they do what they love and what they want, that’s only when they will be good at it and will make me a proud mother. You manage more than 15 hotels, how do you find the time to manage them all? I don’t (laughs). It is a really big issue, I have to prioritize my day to be able to cover as much as I can of all the commitments I have to supervise the communication message for each property, brand and area messages. It’s not easy, but my physical location and working hours are most of the time flexible so, I tend to sometimes work from home, in the car, between two appointments, and even on the beach like last year, I used to take all my conference calls during the SPG summer beach lounge

inauguration, but that was a great experience. What is your marketing plan for the Starwood Hotels in 2017? There are no more Starwood Hotels, we are now one big company called Marriott, and the marketing plan for 2017 is being re-adjusted to fit into the new brand goals and objectives, which of course promotes all Marriott brands property in Egypt, GCC, Europe and all other markets. How do you see the future of business in Egypt during such a hard economical situation? Well, I see it much better than last year, things are finally moving positively, and travel bans are gradually being removed, and for the first time since the Revolution local tourism is increasing almost by 60 percent. What are your tips for the upcoming entrepreneurs who want to succeed in the business world? Be different, creative, take the initiative and do it with all your heart, only then will everyone else help you. Any special packages for Mother’s Day? Each hotel has its own Mother’s Day promotion, but most of them include a special lunch + Spa treatments and a one night stay.

GHADA BESHR

Area Director of Marketing for Sofitel Egypt Tell us more about you I graduated from Ramses Collage school, and then from Faculty of Fine Arts, majoring in Interior Design. I am 37 years and my star sign is Libra. How did studying interior design helped you in your career as a Marketing Director? It’s all about being creative; creating the right package and advertising with an attractive design. In addition to my input on new hotel projects from the design/artistic point of view. I remember in 2005, my General Manager asked me to paint something special for the new Royal Suite and I did and it’s still there under my name. Besides being one of the top Marketing Directors in Egypt, what are your hobbies? I love painting of course, reading and I used to

play the piano, tennis every now and then, and volleyball, which is my favourite. Behind every successful woman a man or herself, do you agree with this statement? Behind every successful man is a woman, but vice versa is not applicable. Behind every successful woman is either her mother or herself. Not a man. In my case, it’s my amazing strong mother who is behind my success. Sofitel El Gezirah is one of the most prestigious hotels in the Capital, what is your marketing plan to keep it in the same distinguished position in 2017? It was my dream to work for Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah since I joined the hotel business. To be creative and lead the market are the main keys to keep it in the same position. How do you see the future of business in Egypt in 2017?

I’m optimistic and I see future business even more flourishing than in 2011, with different market segments, more travel & corporate business after the opening of the grand museum as well as the new projects that Egypt is investing in currently. What are your tips for the upcoming entrepreneurs who want to succeed in the business world? First, they should challenge themselves, take all the tasks they are asked for, believe in themselves, have vision and manage energy and time. Any special offers for Mother’s Day? Yes, this year we will offer an unresistable package at SoSPA followed by a magnifique promotion at Le Deck restaurant.
