MISSION STATEMENT

A Message from Our Director

Dear Residents:

The Park Board

Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers. The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., at 7 p.m.

Please feel welcome to attend.

• Sept. 19 • Oct. 17 • Nov 21 • Dec. 18

In your hands, you’re holding the first step down a very important path. You’re holding an idea book. A manifesto for change. A call to action. You are holding the key to better health, more socialization and ways to enrich the quality of your life. It doesn’t matter what age you are—the Park District has something for everyone. I have heard some people say, “My kids are grown so we don’t use the Park District anymore.” I ask you to consider the following possibilities. Do you take the dog to the Bark Park? Do you take your grandchildren to the playground? Do you attend the Windmill City Festival or River Rhapsody Concert Series? All of these activities are connected to the Park District. We are your friend for life! What better way to understand and learn about the community’s needs and wants than to ask YOU? In alignment with best practices, the Batavia Park District conducts a community needs assessment every five years. The District hired PROS Consulting to conduct focus groups and create a community survey to guide the District in future community needs as it relates to recreation facilities, programming and park development.

This Fun Guide contains a highlight reel of the results fresh off the press from our latest community needs assessment. The full results are posted on our website at bataviaparks.org. Thank you to those who participated in the assessment. You are helping us to create a new vision for parks and recreation in Batavia.

A family favorite tradition (formerly known as Mom & Son Wagon Rides) has been re-branded as S’mores & More. This beloved family event is now open to everyone of all ages—not just moms and sons anymore—to participate. West Main Community Park is the picturesque backdrop for a tractor-pulled wagon ride through the park, an al fresco dinner, and a fall craft, topped off with s’mores by a campfire. This special event takes place on your choice of Thursdays: Sept. 21 or 28 for just $14 per person. Plan to join us for a cozy fall evening in the park; scan the QR code on page 13 to purchase tickets before they sell out!

Dance

42 | Fall 2023

Dance Class Helpful Tips

Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “Tutu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.”

Dance Attire: Please wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion. No denim is allowed. Most dancers are comfortable in leotards/tights or leggings.

Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations.

Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation!

The goal of the Batavia Park District dance program is to help all dancers improve grace and flexibility while introducing them to the beauty and benefits of dance.

Batavia Park District Memorial Program

Celebrate and commemorate a loved one’s life or express sympathy or condolences for the loss of a friend or family member with a memorial tree or bench. The District offers several options to memorialize your loved one or to mark a special date or occasion. Placement along the Batavia Riverwalk is no longer an option for a memorial bench or tree due to spatial limitations.

Memorial Trees

Memorial trees leave a lasting legacy, which will grow stronger and blossom year after year. Trees are planted twice a year (spring and fall). The cost for a Memorial Tree is $800, and includes the tree, stone marker, and installation. Please visit bataviaparks.org for a full list of available trees.

Memorial Benches

Memorial benches add beauty to a park and provide a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy as they relax in their surroundings. The cost for a 4-foot bench is $2,550, and a 6-foot bench is $3,000, which includes the bench, plaque, and installation.

Batavia Park District Pet Memorial Program

The Batavia Park District recognizes that many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Commemorate the life of your beloved pet by purchasing a brick or agility equipment through the District’s Pet Memorial Program. The cost for a pet brick is $200.

• Memorial Bricks

• Memorial Benches

• Agility Equipment

The District has selected several agility pieces that can be purchased through the Pet Memorial Program.

For more information on how to purchase a memorial item, please call 630-879-5235.

92 | Fall 2023 OUR COMMUNITY
Barco Products is a proud partner of the Batavia Park District Memorial Program.

For Batavia Park District! Volunteer

Be Part of the Fun

Enhance your life while giving back to the community through service opportunities. Batavia Park District volunteers are essential to the success of our programs. Any amount of time that you can afford to give will be greatly appreciated.

Volunteers make a difference. More than one quarter of a million people nation-wide donate their time and expertise as volunteers for park and recreation programs and services, saving taxpayers millions of dollars in personnel costs.

Who Can Volunteer?

• Individuals and Families

Choose an activity or special event based on your interests and availability.

• Businesses

Build a company’s public image and improve staff morale by building a “team” attitude by contributing staff and/or resources.

• Teens and School Groups

Boys and girls at least 14 years old are invited to gain valuable work experience or fulfill service hours for school or other organizations.

Background checks will be conducted on any individuals 15+ years old.

To volunteer please visit bataviaparks.org/volunteering.

Refunds will be considered for the following reasons:

• Class Cancellations/Park District Closings; Class Cancellations or Park District Closings will result in a refund that will be mailed to the person who was enrolled in the class unless the participant is a minor, the refund will go to the parent/guardian who signs the registration form. Inclement Weather Policy

For program and event updates or cancellations, please visit bataviaparks.org/rainout. The umpires or instructors decide the status of play after program starts. They will base their decisions on the field conditions and the likelihood of rain or thunder.

Nonresident Fee Policy

The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the park district via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the park district in 1969. A copy of a map showing the park district boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the park district office. Persons living outside the park district boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers:

Electronic signature readers have been installed, which will eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader will capture your signature and confirm that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration will not be affected by this new procedure.

Batavia Park District Waiver And Release of All Claims

Important Information

The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in any activities.

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for recreational activities. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk

Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.
