LIVING Connected
How Technology is Redefining Healthy Living at Home
In today’s fast-paced world, creating a home centered around your health and well-being is more important than ever. Homebuyers are increasingly seeking ways to integrate wellness into their living spaces, and smart home technology is stepping up to meet the challenge. From air purification systems to circadian lighting and advanced water monitoring, experts share how healthfocused smart tech is reshaping how we think about our homes.
Breathing Easier
Indoor air quality plays a significant role in overall health. Smart air purification systems are leading the charge by removing allergens and pollutants from the air. Advanced models can monitor air quality in real-time, automatically adjusting settings to maintain a healthy environment.
“We’re seeing increased interest in indoor air quality monitoring systems,” says Kristin Reinitz, CRO and partner of Admit One Home Systems. “Advanced sensors now measure everything from humidity levels to pollutants like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and provide real-time feedback. Integration with HVAC systems allows for automatic adjustments, ensuring that air quality stays optimal throughout the day.”
Lighting That Works with Your Body’s Clock
Circadian lighting systems mimic the natural progression of sunlight, helping to regulate sleep patterns and
improve mood. These systems adjust the color temperature and intensity of light throughout the day to align with your body’s natural rhythms.
“Smart lighting systems that mimic natural daylight patterns are becoming more popular,” says Reinitz. “These systems adjust color temperature and brightness throughout the day to support circadian rhythms, helping regulate sleep-wake cycles and improve overall wellbeing.”
The connection between natural light and intentional interior lighting introduces a level of forethought that smart home technology is uniquely positioned to provide.
“Intentional lighting means that the light is focused on where it should be when tasking or for general living purpose,” says Eric Link, general manager with In-Focus Systems. “These settings can be matched with window treatments that will allow a homeowner to have more natural light coming into the home during certain times throughout the day, promoting health and wellbeing.”
Simplicity
Controlling multiple elements — such as lighting, shading, music, and temperature — with a single command simplifies daily life. Pre-programmed schedules and routines automatically adjust lighting and shading throughout the day, minimizing decision fatigue for homeowners.
“Shades can open in the morning to let in natural light and close in the evening for privacy,” Reinitz shares.
“A ‘Good Night’ button can dim all lights, close shades, and even adjust HVAC settings.”
Creating a simplified smart home starts with partnering alongside a team that knows how to understand how you live in your home.
“The best thing anyone can do when considering these things is to partner with an expert,” adds Link. “It comes down to actively listening and providing solutions that meet the client’s needs.”
Smarter Water Management
Water quality is another critical factor in a healthy home. Smart water filtration systems go beyond traditional filters by monitoring and improving water quality in real-time. These systems can detect contaminants and alert homeowners to potential issues, ensuring safe and clean water for drinking, cooking, and bathing.
Looking to the future, “smart water systems will monitor quality, detect leaks, and even adjust for optimal hydration and skincare,” explains Reinitz.
Advanced systems now allow for app-based controls and seamless integration with broader home
automation systems. This kind of integration creates a cohesive, health-focused living environment.
The Power of Integration
One of the most compelling aspects of smart home technology is its ability to create a holistic wellness environment. By integrating air purifiers, lighting, and water systems into a unified hub, homeowners can easily monitor and control their home’s health settings.
“When lighting, shading, HVAC, security, and even water monitoring systems are interconnected, they create an environment that adapts holistically to your needs,” says Reinitz. “For example, your smart system can adjust lighting and shades automatically when the thermostat detects increased sun exposure, maintaining comfort and energy efficiency.”
When integrating your smart home system into a new build, Reinitz emphasized the importance of having your integrator involved in a project as early as possible to ensure the system is seamlessly designed and to avoid costly changes later.
“This approach keeps the project on track while creating a cohesive
and future-ready solution tailored to your needs,” she says.
The Future of Health-Focused Smart Homes
The smart home industry continues to evolve, with new innovations on the horizon. AI-powered systems promise even greater personalization, while advancements in sustainability aim to make health-focused technology more accessible and eco-friendlier.
“Homeowners should keep an eye on advancements in biometric monitoring integrated into home systems, such as smart mirrors that assess health metrics or smart appliances that recommend personalized dietary adjustments,” says Link.
Reinitz sees AI-driven home automation on the rise as well. “Artificial intelligence will make homes even smarter, learning habits and optimizing settings for lighting, air quality, and comfort automatically,” she adds.
As demand for wellness-driven homes grows, builders and technology providers are rising to the occasion. When you’re building a new home, investing in smart tech can transform your living space.
HUE GOT THIS: HOME COLOR GUIDE
Explore how intentional color choices can transform your home
When it comes to designing a home that fosters health, happiness, and wellbeing, color is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. The colors we choose for our walls influence how we feel, think, and interact in our spaces. By tapping into the principles of color psychology, you can curate a home that nurtures calmness, sparks energy, or inspires joy.
“Choose colors based on the mood you want to evoke,” says Jean Haukaas, Hirshfield’s Design Resource showroom manager. “Calm, neutral tones like soft blues and grays work well in bedrooms, while brighter, more energetic hues can suit kitchens or playrooms.”
Bedrooms and bathrooms are sanctuaries where calmness and relaxation should reign. Soft, cool hues such as blues, greens, and neutrals pair beautifully with natural textures and soft lighting to create an inviting retreat that feels like an escape from the busyness of life.
“Upward SW 6239, a light and airy blue that breathes a calming breath of fresh air into any space, is a great choice for bedrooms and bathrooms where homeowners are looking for a restful retreat,”
Emily Kantz, color marketing manager with Sherwin Williams. “I’ve also been loving the idea of restorative darks, so I would also recommend going for a deep and warm brown tone such as Clove SW 9605 from our 2025 Color Capsule of the Year. This shade is the perfect balance between elegant and restful thanks to its warmth that helps ground any room.”
ENERGIZING PALETTES FOR ACTIVE SPACES
CALMING COLORS FOR RESTFUL RETREATS

For areas of the home where energy and creativity are needed, brighter, warmer paint colors take the spotlight. Pair these hues with neutral tones to maintain balance while still fostering vibrancy.
“Using a palette with a soft touch of yellow, like Hirshfield’s Barberry Sand or Benjamin Moore’s Acadia White, can make the space feel lively and invigorating, adding warmth and a sense of energy without overwhelming the senses,” says Haukaas.

JOYFUL TONES FOR LIVING AND PLAY AREAS
Living rooms and playrooms are spaces where connection, fun, and joy come to life. Bright, cheerful paint colors can infuse these areas with an uplifting vibe. These hues work well with playful patterns or statement artwork to enhance the room’s joyful atmosphere without feeling chaotic.
“Hirshfield’s Sandstone Palette provides the perfect backdrop for adding colorful furniture and accessories, creating a welcoming space where family and friends can gather and enjoy,” shares Haukaas.
“I’m currently loving two playful and colorful shades from our 2025 Color Capsule of the Year: Chartreuse and Mauve Finery,” says Kantz. “Chartreuse is a historic color that has never been more relevant. This vibrant yellow green has appeared on three of our most recent Colormix Forecasts and brings a jolt of joyful, tropical brightness that is both effortlessly eclectic and surprisingly versatile. Mauve Finery brings a touch of botanical beauty to any space. This subdued, sophisticated true mauve, with a dreamy quality that adorns spaces with a refreshing appeal as a wall color or an accent hue.”

Neutrals are the unsung heroes of color psychology. They provide a versatile canvas that allows accent colors to shine while promoting balance and grounding energy in any room.
“We’ve noticed homeowners are now gravitating towards warmer toned neutrals, such as beige, brown, or warm whites, instead of grays and cool whites,” says Kantz.
Neutrals are especially effective in open-concept designs, where cohesion and flow are essential. Add dimension to your neutral base by selecting paint colors with varied undertones to create subtle depth.
“These tried and true colors work for everyone,” adds Haukaas. “There’s a reason they’ve been around for a long time.”
The paint colors that surround you have a profound impact on your mood, energy, and overall well-being. By thoughtfully selecting palettes that align with the purpose of each room, you can create a home that is not only visually stunning but also a reflection of your best self.
TIPS FOR INCORPORATING COLOR INTO YOUR NEW HOME
TEST BEFORE YOU COMMIT: Use paint samples to see how colors look on your walls during different times of the day.
“The biggest mistake homeowners can make is skipping one of the most vital steps when painting over a space: sampling. It’s a low-lift effort and makes a world of a difference before committing to a color. I always recommend painting a large swatch on the wall and observe it at different times of the day and under different lighting conditions as well. This will give you a true sense of how any color looks in your specific environment,” says Kantz.
CONSIDER THE ROOM’S FUNCTION: Align your paint color choices with how you want to feel and act in each space.
LAYER COLORS THOUGHTFULLY:
Combine a dominant wall color with complementary shades for depth and interest.
“Colors that work well in one room may clash with those in adjacent rooms, disrupting the flow of the home,” adds Haukaas. “Consider how colors transition between spaces. While you don’t need identical colors in every room, it’s a good idea to use complementary tones that work together to create a harmonious flow.”
CONNECT WITH PROFESSIONALS: Online color pickers and visualizers can assist in seeing how your color will look in your own home, but specialty paint centers also can provide expert professional advice that is tailored to your tastes.
TRUST YOUR INTUITION: Ultimately, the paint colors that make you feel happiest and most at peace are the right ones for your home.

A Personal Retreat
Choose neutral tones. Neutral hues like soft creams, grays, and taupe create an atmosphere of tranquility, setting the stage for rest and rejuvenation. A neutral color palette doesn’t have to feel flat, though. To add more visual interest, consider “textured wallpaper or gentle, patterned designs to infuse depth and personality into your space, making the room truly your own,” says Elizabeth Christenson, a marketing specialist for Stonegate Builders.
Layer textiles. Achieve a sophisticated-yet-approachable ambiance in your primary suite by layering a variety of textiles from floor to ceiling. “Think plush rugs underfoot — perhaps a sheepskin for a soft landing as you get out of bed — and a thoughtfully layered mix of textured bedding,” says Douglas Fisher, vice president and general manager for Fireside Hearth & Home. “Materials like wool, cashmere, and linen transform the space into a sleep retreat that feels both indulgent and totally livable.” Don’t forget about layering window treatments, either. “Combine sheer curtains with heavy drapes for a versatile and polished look,” says Christenson. “These layers balance natural light during the day with privacy and coziness at night.”
BY TAYLOR HUGO
From calming colors and cozy textiles to soft lighting and luxurious amenities, here’s how to design a primary suite that feels like a sanctuary.
If the kitchen is known as the heart of the home, the primary suite should be the mind of the home, serving as a space you can truly unwind and recharge. Read on to learn local home professionals’ advice for designing a primary suite sanctuary that supports your body and mind.
Celebrate natural materials. Natural materials like wood and stone can be used to establish a soothing connection to the outdoors. Features like a wood accent wall or wood ceiling beams, an oak vanity, a freestanding stone tub, or fireplace flames rising out of a bed of river rock are all ways you can ground the space and make it feel trendproof, says Fisher. Adds Christenson, “Marble floors add an extra touch of luxury, seamlessly blending sophistication with nature’s charm.”
Find the right light. Lighting can significantly impact the tone and functionality of a space, so making sure you have the right mix of accent, ambient, and task lighting at the proper color temperatures is crucial. “Maximize natural light to make your suite feel bright and airy first thing in the morning,” says Fisher. “Soft, ambient lighting — think sconces, dimmable fixtures, or bedside lamps — keeps the mood relaxed in the evenings.”
Add a fire feature. Nothing elevates the warmth and coziness of a space quite like a roaring fireplace. “The soft flicker of flames sets a calming tone, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day or easing into a peaceful morning,” says Fisher. “For the ultimate in luxury,
consider a see-through fireplace connecting the bedroom to the ensuite bath.”
Introduce greenery. Plants are known for their wellness benefits, such as reducing stress, promoting better sleep, and improving air quality. But they also double as aesthetically pleasing decor that “introduces an element of nature and creates an organic pop of color,” says Julie Reese, design studio manager for M/I Homes.
Create a spa-like bath. Achieve a spa environment at home by splurging on luxuries like a soaking tub, heated floors, and dual vanities. Streamlined access to a spacious closet and laundry room is a plus, too. “These thoughtful features
create a seamless flow and elevate functionality,” says Christenson.
Select a scent. Smells can evoke strong emotional responses and vivid recollections, so on your nightstand or vanity, place a candle or incense in a scent that is tied to a peaceful place or happy memory, says Reese. If you’re not sure where to start, opt for lavender, vanilla, bergamot, or sandalwood, all considered to be calming scents.
Declutter. The phrase “messy home, messy mind” is not a myth; cluttered spaces lead to stress and distraction — not an ideal way to start or end your day. Organize and clear your room of clutter, including electronics, says Reese, to help you fully unwind and enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

A Space of Their Own
Newlyweds Gina Wolleat-Zorn and Darrell Zorn built their dream home in Ham Lake to accommodate her interior design business, his love for cooking, and their blended family of adult children.
BY TAYLOR HUGO
Being an interior designer, you would think designing your own home would be a simple process, but for Gina Wolleat-Zorn, who owns Room Reimagined Design, she found the opposite to be true.
“Selecting finishes was so much harder, mainly because I love so many different colors, styles, and materials. I wanted to choose them all,” says Gina.
With help from her new husband Darrell Zorn, whom she married this past October, the pair were able to identify the aesthetic they wanted for their first home together. “He prefers a traditional style and loves the color blue,” says Gina. “I’m not traditional, so we kind of had to meet in the middle.”
They compromised and landed on a transitional style that blends traditional and contemporary elements. “I would describe the style of the
home as timeless, not trendy,” says Gina. “In all of my designs, I strive to create a look that will stand the test of time and not have a time stamp that becomes obvious in a few years.”
Choosing Ham Lake’s Hidden Forest development for its “country feel with lots big enough for a little privacy” — plus the proximity to Gina’s parents and many of her design clients — they hired Parent Custom Homes after seeing the builder’s work on a previous Parade of Homes tour.
“Gina and Darrell took a lot of time to get all the details right, starting with the blueprint,” says builder Brent Parent. “They worked with myself and our plan designer to map out exactly how they wanted every room. The attention to detail they had right from the beginning made the build process go a lot smoother.”
The floor plan began by merging two of Parent Custom Homes’ rambler-style plans and giving the architect a list of must-haves, niceto-haves, and idea sketches. Once the first rough draft was developed, Gina and the architect went back and forth many times, tweaking each area to maximize every square inch of the floor plan. “My tape measure was constantly in motion, making sure that the sizes of the rooms were adequate but did not include more space than we really needed,” says Gina.
The result is a 3,500-square-foot home that features four bedrooms — two of which are used as home offices and a design studio — three bathrooms, and plenty of space to entertain their blended family of four adult children, like the gourmet kitchen and lower-level wet bar.
When it came to the design, Gina leaned on her experience as an interior designer to guide the process of bringing each space to life. “I firmly believe that the best furnishing designs come from working with an inspirational piece,” she says. “When working with my clients, I try to hone in on something inspirational for each room or area. It may be an existing bold accent color on the wall, a favorite piece of artwork, or a beautiful throw pillow. From there, I choose the rest of the furnishings, taking great care that everything complements the inspirational piece.”
For her own home, that inspirational piece was a slab of Venchi Fusion granite from Brazil. “Once I laid eyes on that slab, I knew we had to have it,” she says. “I won’t lie, I lost a little sleep thinking about the ‘HOLD’ sign slipping off and it being sold to someone else.”
Featuring a combination of black, slate, blue, cream, salmon, and gray, each room was designed to complement that countertop, and all furniture, draperies, artwork, rugs, and other decor was chosen to coordinate with the slab.
IN THE PRIMARY SUITE, A MURAL BEHIND THE BED ACTS AS A FOCAL POINT, RECEIVING AMPLE NATURAL LIGHT FROM THE ADJACENT WINDOWS. GINA REQUESTED DRYWALL RETURNS ON THE WINDOWS THROUGHOUT THE HOME, MEANING THERE’S NO TRIM OR CASING. “THAT IS A LOT MORE CHALLENGING THAN THE AVERAGE HOMEOWNER WOULD THINK WHEN IT COMES TO KEEPING THINGS STRAIGHT,” SAYS BRENT. “IT TOOK EXTRA TIME, BUT WE DID IT AND IT TURNED OUT GREAT.”
THE POWDER ROOM IS DECORATED WITH A PEACOCK-PATTERNED WALLPAPER THAT MIMICS MANY OF THE COLORS IN THE KITCHEN ISLAND COUNTERTOP. “A SMALL POWDER ROOM IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO DO A VERY BOLD WALLPAPER,” SAYS GINA.
“We are lucky because the decision making at every level was super easy. Basically, I would present Darrell with what I thought was the best option and let him approve,” says Gina. “A few times I had to go back to the drawing board, but honestly, his input made me think outside of the box and allowed for his personality to shine through as well.”
This can be seen in details like the authentic Wagyu horns that adorn the wet bar and a gourmet kitchen complete with a pot filler and “red knobs on the range,” says Gina, referring to the Wolf appliance brand’s signature design. “Darrell is an amazing cook, and he has always dreamed of a Wolf range. We love hosting holidays and dinner parties. We cannot wait to utilize the gourmet kitchen and dining table that seats 12, and mix up some fun drinks in the amazing wet bar. The most fun part of the project was creating a vision — not only for the aesthetics of the home and how it will function but having a vision for living in our first home together.”
PROS AND CONS Induction Cooking
Induction cooking combines the speed and precision of gas with the easy cleanup and eco-friendly benefits of electric appliances. These stoves heat water more quickly, activate only when cookware is present, and consistently outperform other cooktops according to consumer evaluations. Moreover, you may be eligible for financial incentives when you purchase an induction range under the Inflation Reduction Act.
How Induction Works
Induction cooktops generate an electromagnetic field beneath the surface to heat magnetic cookware directly. They resemble glass-top electric models and often come with advanced oven features like convection, WiFi, and temperature probes.
Pros
1 FASTER COOKING: Induction heats pots and pans directly, reducing cooking times compared to gas or electric. For example, 6 quarts of water boils 2–4 minutes faster.
2 EASY CLEANUP: The smooth surface stays cool, so spills don’t bake. A quick wipe with a damp cloth keeps it clean.
3 SAFETY: Induction burners stay cool without a pot on its surface, reducing burn risks.
4 ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Induction cooktops are up to 10% more energy-efficient than conventional electric glass top cooktops and about three times more efficient than gas cooktops.
5 INCENTIVES: Programs like the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate can offer up to $840 off
ENERGY STAR-approved models at the time of purchase. In Minnesota, electric or induction cooktops will be featured in several homes that go through the Xcel Energy Efficient New Home Construction program.
6 ADVANCED FEATURES: Precise temperature control, app compatibility, and full-surface cooking enhance usability.
Cons
1 DIFFERENT FEEL: Induction lacks the visual and tactile cues of gas flames, though some models mimic flames with lights.
2 CONVERSION COSTS: Switching from gas to induction requires a 240v outlet, which can add to installation expenses.
3 COOKWARE REQUIREMENTS: Only magnetic cookware works; check with a magnet or look for “induction compatible” labels.
4 NOISE: Induction can produce a humming or buzz, especially at high settings.
5 THERMOMETER INTERFERENCE: The electromagnetic field may disrupt digital meat thermometers.
6 HIGHER INITIAL COST: Induction ranges are pricier than conventional electric models, though prices are dropping, and incentives help offset costs.

Created by Housing First Minnesota in 2011, Minnesota’s Green Path program is the leading
energy efficiency and green building program for the residential construction industry in the state. The program provides easy-tounderstand energy efficiency reports for homeowners and provides recognition for builders dedicated to green construction. Designated Green Path Builders are industry leaders in energyefficient residential home construction. These builders agree to

Levels of Green
Minnesota’s Green Path offers three energy efficiency certification levels: Energy Tested, Advanced, and Master. Each certification level receives a Home Performance Report (HPR) revealing the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index for the project to provide a comprehensive assessment of a home’s energy efficiency. The lower a home’s HERS Score, the better its energy efficiency.
Energy Tested is the base level and provides each new home with an HPR. Advanced Certified is the mid-level green certification that means a home has met an energy testing standard plus includes additional green features. Master Certified, the top level, means a home has exceeded the Advanced Certified standards and meets a higher level of energy tested standards.
These certifications go beyond standard practices, highlighting homes that meet exceptional criteria for energy performance and sustainability. Builders achieving these levels demonstrate leadership in reducing carbon footprints while delivering tangible benefi ts to homeowners, such as lower utility bills and enhanced comfort. In 2024, 30 homes achieved Advanced or Master certification.
As a part of Xcel Energy’s commitment to green building, it has teamed up with Minnesota’s Green Path to recognize new homes that go above and beyond in energy efficiency.

VETERANS IN NEED BUILDING HOPE FOR MINNESOTA ’S
Each year, the Parade of Homes inspires thousands and helps Minnesotans find a place to call home. But this beloved event is more than a home tour; it’s an opportunity to support life-changing initiatives through the Housing First Minnesota Foundation. This year, the Foundation’s work is highlighted by a deeply impactful project: the Veteran Village, a first-of-its-kind initiative to create a townhome-style community for veterans experiencing homelessness.
A Mission to Serve
The Housing First Minnesota Foundation has long been dedicated to addressing housing insecurity in our communities. Its most recent effort, the Veteran Village project, exemplifies this mission. Partnering with the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV) and build partner Lennar, the Foundation is building a first-ever townhome community specifically for veterans in need. This initiative is fueled by the Foundation’s largest fundraising campaign to date, with the goal of providing safe, stable housing and a path to independence for those who have served our country.
“Veteran Village represents not only a place to live but a foundation for rebuilding lives,” says Jessica
Ryan, vice president of development for Housing First Minnesota. “Through this partnership, we’re making a tangible difference for veterans facing homelessness.”
A Partnership for Change
The Veteran Village is the result of a powerful partnership between organizations committed to addressing veteran homelessness. MACV brings decades of expertise in supporting Minnesota’s veterans, while Lennar contributes its industry-leading homebuilding experience. Together, these organizations—with the support of the Foundation—are creating a sustainable solution to one of the state’s most pressing challenges.
“MACV, Housing First Foundation, and Lennar formed a partnership seven years ago with the vision of ending veterans homelessness in the state of Minnesota,” says Bill Burgess, division president of Lennar Minnesota. “After building 15 homes, along with the start of Veteran Village in Eagan, Minnesota is on the cusp of being only the fourth state to be able to declare an end of veteran homelessness.”
This initiative will provide more than just housing. The homes are designed to foster community, offering veterans a sense of belonging and stability. Support services
through MACV will also be available, ensuring residents have access to the resources they need to thrive.
Parade of Homes Connection
The Housing First Minnesota Foundation’s work is made possible by generous contributions from the community—including Parade of Homes attendees. The tour’s 6 Dream Homes play a crucial role in supporting the Foundation. Visitors who explore these Dream Homes are directly contributing to projects like Veteran Village through the admission fee. Each entry not only offers a glimpse into some of the Twin Cities’ most stunning residences but also helps create homes for those in need.
Building a Legacy
Veteran Village builds on the Foundation’s history of creating lasting change. Recently completed projects include three homes for veterans in North Minneapolis, built in partnership with MACV and Lennar. These homes have already transformed lives, offering stability and security to veterans who previously faced housing uncertainty.
“We are proud that our association, industry, trade partners, and associates have been so focused on making this vision become reality,” says Burgess.
The Dream Homes on the Parade of Homes support the Housing First Minnesota Foundation’s work toward building safe housing for Minnesotans in need of shelter with a vision of ending homelessness. Dream Homes are hand-selected by our Housing First Minnesota Foundation and feature exquisite craftsmanship, intricate design details, and the ability to inspire every visitor.
Each Dream Home requires a $5 admission, paid at the door. Thank you for supporting those who need a safe place to call home.
