LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT THANKS! It’s been a great year to be the BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation President. We started the year partnering with Kingdom Builders to renovate three units of an eight-unit apartment building for Avivo in Minneapolis. Crystal Kitchens followed up by completing a fourth unit. Soderberg Apartment Specialists came in and did four more units, the last four, in an incredible seven days! This important work will make a lasting impact for women and their children who participate in Avivo’s treatment program. Our next project was a collaboration between Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), the Foundation, and our build partner Lennar Minnesota to build housing for homeless women veterans in Maplewood. This is the second home that Lennar has done in partnership with the Foundation for clients of MACV, and we are fortunate to have a build partner with such dedication. We closed out the year restoring the House of Hope property at the Emmaus Lutheran Church in Bloomington. Together for Good will use the renovated home to house homeless women and their children. Homes By Tradition was our outstanding build partner for this project.
DONATIONS We can’t do this tremendous work without the generous efforts of BATC-Housing First Minnesota’s associates, builders, remodelers, and trade partners. Their contributions allow us to perform these good deeds in the community. New this year is our foray into grant writing. We are moving forward with grant writing to enhance our budget and allow us the opportunity to impact even more lives. Personally, it has been a very rewarding year for me. The shared staff leadership for 2018 of Bob Bennett and Donnie Brown proved to be a winning combination. We continued to grow and expand our efforts to impact more lives. Special thanks to Shelly Barrett who kept things moving behind the scenes and to David Siegel and his outstanding Association staff for their contributions and for engaging the Foundation with the BATCHousing First Minnesota board of directors. And I can’t say enough about the Foundation board members and our committee members. It has been a privilege to be part of the team. It has been a year of dedication and hard work from everybody with great results. Expect the same in 2019!
Stephen Roche Foundation Board President

O U R H EA RTS AT WO R K The BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation builds safe and dignified housing for Minnesotans who are experiencing homelessness. According to the Homeless in Minnesota report, Wilder Research counted 10,233 people who experienced homelessness in Minnesota in 2018. Between 2015 and 2018, there was a considerable increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness who were not in a formal shelter in Minnesota. The BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation was tasked with addressing the growing need for housing in our community. We realized that we could leverage the expertise of BATC-Housing First Minnesota’s members to increase the number of shelter facilities and beds available in the community.
8
In 2018, the Foundation partnered with local nonprofits to complete three community build projects for those experiencing homelessness. These organizations provide transitional housing services for veteran women experiencing homelessness, mothers receiving chemical dependency treatment, and survivors of domestic violence.
W ITH YOU R HE L P, T HIS IS WHAT W E A CCO MPLIS HE D IN 2018: •
Renovated eight apartment units dedicated for family outpatient treatment with partner Avivo
•
Constructed transitional housing that serves the needs of veteran women who need stable housing.
•
Rehabilitated a church parsonage repurposed as temporary housing for mothers to reunite with their children after incarceration.
•
Reviewed internal policies and governance to adhere to operational transparency and financial vitality.
These projects resulted in 11,000 square feet of transitional housing, 23 new and renovated shelter beds, and 91 individuals accessing safe and affordable housing in our community. These are accomplishments that should make us all proud.
