ARTISAN HOME TOUR by Parade of Homes | ARTISANHOMETOUR.ORG
What steps is the Artisan Home Tour taking for guests’ health and safety? The safety and well-being of our attendees, builders, and partners is our top priority. For that reason, we moved the Artisan Home Tour from June to October this year. To provide a safe and enjoyable event, we will be following all CDC, federal, and state recommendations regarding COVID-19. While visiting the homes, please follow these guidelines for your safety and the safety of those around you. • If you are sick, stay home. Contact the builder for options on setting up a private showing or virtual tour at a later date. • Masks are required for all attendees. • Foot coverings/booties will be required for all attendees and will be provided by the tour. Socks without coverings and shoes will not be allowed. • The number of people allowed in each home at one time will be limited. If the home is full, please wait until you are notified that it’s acceptable to enter. • Maintain 6 feet of separation while waiting to enter the home and within the home as you tour. This may require waiting to enter a hallway or a room until the people ahead of you have left the area. Thank you for your consideration and patience. • Do not open cabinet doors and do not touch surfaces. • If you do not have a ticket, we encourage you download the Artisan Home Tour app and purchase your ticket online.

TRENDS HEATING UP THE FIREPLACE INDUSTRY
JIM KRUGER/LANDMARK PHOTOGRAPHY
From outdoor living rooms to glassless designs, contemporary fireplaces combine function with luxury amenities.
Most would agree that there are few activities as relaxing (or romantic) as curling up in front of a fireplace with a good book or a glass of wine. In fact, 97% of people say they are interested in having a fireplace, with 79% of luxury homebuyers calling them a “must-have,” according to research done by Hearth and Home Technologies and Fireside Hearth & Home (fireside-pro.com), the world’s largest fireplace installing distributor and dealer. But it’s not about seeking a heat source. “The research was clear—
homebuyers are looking at fireplaces because they add coziness to their homes, and create a relaxing and inviting environment. What’s more, they see the fireplace as a focal point of design that adds to the home’s overall décor and value,” says Peter Dircks, vice president and general manager for Fireside. “Further, it’s not just the fireplace. It’s the overall package of the fireplace design, the decorative front, the mantle choice, and the decorative stone or other unique wall treatments. The whole interior design of it is really important and what we bring to our customers.”

Today’s fireplaces go beyond the traditional brick-and-wooden-mantel design most homeowners are accustomed to. Think rectangular shapes and landscape views, as well as see-through and threesided peninsula styles. Even fireplace interiors are getting an overhaul, with customizable options including reflective surfaces and stainless-steel backgrounds, interior details like glass media and log choices, and front finishes in brass, brushed nickel, and oilrubbed bronze. “A lot of homebuyers aren’t aware of the breadth and depth of designs that exist in the marketplace,” says Dircks. “There’s such an abundance of beautiful styles.”
amenities, and ease of gas-burning fireplaces and their contemporary counterparts, like realisticlooking split wood logs and LED-lit ember beds. THREE
Glassless design. Taking the traditional realism trend one step further is Heat & Glo’s Phoenix TrueView Gas Fireplace. Featuring an open-concept design, the glassless front means you get the clearest view possible of the logs, embers, and flames, fully customized with a traditional brick or modern reflective black glass interior. If you close your eyes, we bet you’ll be transported to a campfire in the woods, crackling flames and all. FOUR
Cool to the touch. TWO
Traditional realism. Of course, these modern designs don’t fit the aesthetic of every home and homeowner, and there’s still a place in the market for those who lean toward classic styles. That’s where the “traditional realism” trend comes in—translation: units that have the look and feel of traditional wood-burning fireplaces, but with all the luxuries,
Safety should always be a top priority when it comes to fireplaces, especially if there are young children in the house. “All gas-burning fireplaces come standard with safety screens, and now there are some new technologies that offer cool-to-the-touch glass for safety,” Dircks says. “For example, the Heat & Glo Primo features SafeSurface glass with no exposed seams, mesh, or metal trim, combining both safety and modern design.”

FIVE
Outdoor living rooms. With Minnesota’s short summers and long winters, it makes sense that homeowners want to soak up as much time outside as possible. Enter: outdoor living rooms, complete with wood-burning or gas fireplaces that invite you and your guests to linger a little longer around the seating area. “People are enjoying staying at their homes more, and an outdoor fireplace adds some nice visual flair and ambiance to their outdoor living room,” says Dircks. SIX
Heat management. The warmth of a fireplace is hard to beat on a cold winter night, but sometimes you just want the cozy atmosphere—sans the sweat. Heat management gives you the best of both worlds. “When you want the look of a flame but don’t want all the heat, you actually move the heat somewhere else in the home or outside the home,” explains Dircks. “Maybe you’re having a dinner party and it’s summertime, or you have a family room with a fireplace, but you want some heat in your office in the next room over. Heat management allows you to move the heat outside of your house or divert it to another room.” SEVEN
Smart capabilities. With today’s technology, nearly every home feature has the option to be connected to and controlled by a phone or your voice. Fireplaces are no exception. “It reduces the need for having an extra remote,” says Dircks, calling out the benefits of smartphone connectivity, like the ability to turn a fireplace on or off even when you’re outside of the home. Flame height, interior lighting effects, and fan speed can also be controlled via app. Traditional or modern, indoor or outdoor, the best fireplaces are the ones that match the design of their surroundings and needs of the homeowners. “We help builders, architects, and designers really think about how their clients want to use the space—that family room, that recreation room, the bathroom, wherever the fireplace is going,” says Dircks. “We love to help builders and architects with their design vision—combined with the wants and needs of their homebuyer—to achieve the outcome that everyone really, really wants.”
Elegance from every angle. THE FOUNDATION SERIES Tastefully unite your home design with the Foundation Series Pier custom gas fireplace. With dazzling flames from three sides, Safety Touch glass, chromotherapy lighting and smart control, you add a showpiece presence to your interior.
The fireplace of your dreams is waiting. Call 651-633-1042 or visit fireside.com to find a showroom nearest you.

Building Futures Through Housing The Housing First Minnesota Foundation has reached its 25th anniversary. The Foundation started in the early 1980s as a committee that found a unique way for builders, remodelers, and suppliers to focus their charitable efforts by making a difference in the community. Its motto was “Making a difference, one home at a time.” Right from the start, the decision to establish the entity as a nonprofit organization—originally as the Builders Outreach Foundation— proved to be extremely successful. During the first 10 years, 11 housing projects were completed touching lives in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Today, the Foundation partners with shelters that provide transitional housing and supportive services helping individuals rebuild their lives. These partnerships allow
the shelters to focus on providing residents with services such as chemical dependency counseling, employment training, and financial literacy education. The Foundation utilizes the builders to renovate shelter facilities and increase their capacity. The Foundation is also focused on the construction-related workforce shortage and strategies to attract new talent to the homebuilding industry. A scholarship program was created to attract young
professionals to the residential homebuilding industry. $100,000 has been awarded to Minnesota high school and college students over the past six years. Since its inception, the Foundation has completed 55 community build projects, built and restored over 87,000 square feet of housing, educated future construction laborers, and invested millions in donated building products, materials, and labor to revitalize affordable housing for those in need.

Our clients are hands down the biggest inspiration when it comes to the homes we build. We believe every home should be designed around the people that live in it, so their personalities and lifestyles are the largest inspiration. Outside of that, we gain a lot of inspiration from traveling, whether that be through materials, construction methods, technology, or design.

We focus on creating timeless spaces that reflect our clients’ personal styles more than we worry about what’s trending. That being said, trends are fun to incorporate when they are congruent CONSTRUCTION?
An Artisan home is all about creativity and uniqueness. The home should be inspiring, push the envelope (whether that be from a design, technological, or construction standpoint), and should always include an element of surprise.

The lifestyle of our homeowners is always the most influential component when designing a property. First and foremost a home needs to be a place for productivity, reprieve, and comfort to our clients—whatever that may entail. Weaving the client’s everyday lifestyle into the style and aesthetic of the home is integral in creating each individual space. We also find it extremely important to have the land in which the home sits inspire the design, bringing the topography and views from the outside in so that they become one and the same—not just a beautiful home that could sit on any lot, but a stunning and seamless property.

We’ve finished hundreds of building projects, and a piece of us is attached to each one of them. We continue to grow, but we try to stay small by design, allowing us to have a more personal approach. The clients we work for have a desire for creativity and expect a great experience throughout the entire design-build process. We bring all the experts needed for a successful project together, early in the process, so the client gets the most value in their home.
SUCCESSFUL BUILD TEAM?
The most important element of a successful build team is getting everyone to the table as soon as possible. It is extremely helpful to have the person who is going to build the home sitting at the table during the entire design process. Your builder can help find you the best architectural designer, interior designer, project manager, site supervisor, estimator, vendors, and craftspeople. Growing up in a smaller town in western Minnesota, we had an interest at an early age in custom homebuilding and remodeling through our annual family trip to the Twin Cities to tour the Parade of Homes. These annual trips solidified our desire to one day become custom homebuilders ourselves. After stints in the marketing and IT fields after college, we jumped headfirst into custom homebuilding, remodeling, and real estate 15+ years ago and never looked back. We couldn’t imagine doing anything else today.

Besides our focus on unique modern designs, our clients are drawn to our commitment to building energy-efficient, high-performance homes that also adhere to the most stringent requirements for indoor air quality. We believe a home shouldn’t make you sick, so while the design aesthetic of a home is obviously very important, so are the products we use in every home. While not all our clients have energy efficiency or indoor air quality at the top of their wish list, at a minimum, we educate them on how minor changes in material choices can make their home healthier for them and their families.

We have been known to install unique special features: built-in coffee bars within our master suites, hidden lofts made just for kids, a bridge spanning two wings of a home, a fire pole to slide down, and unique finishes typically only found in commercial settings. But our standard signature continues to be our Minnesota Modern style, which seamlessly blends modern transitional style with warm wood, stone, and earth tones, in addition to our commitment to building energy-efficient homes for our clients.

The artistry of the design begins with a façade that creates magic through horizontal and vertical elements made even more interesting with two canted rooflines. • Both beautiful and durable, the exterior boasts a clever fir and glass pivot front door, natural stone, Hardie products, Douglas fir shiplap, custom metal panels, and a stamped concrete driveway to create textural delight. • The crown jewel of this lake home is its juxtaposition of indoor and outdoor living, with full walls of contemporary Marvin windows opening to layered decking for multiple gathering zones, plus a glorious pool and hot tub connected to a screen porch. • Phantom Screens turn the porch into the ideal outdoor room complete with grilling station, pizza oven, natural stone floor, TV, and fireplace. • More unique features turn the spacious and well-designed interior into a true showplace, starting with the steel floating
staircase and custom metal accents and finishing with plenty of natural stone, hickory flooring, and a home automation system to manage motorized window shades, AV, and lighting. • The two-story great room’s massive fireplace opens to the kitchen featuring stainless Sub-Zero/Wolf appliances, a 12-foot island with double waterfall edge, Cambria countertops, and an adjacent pantry. • The main-floor owners’ suite includes a fireplace, grand bathroom, and huge closet, plus it opens directly to the rear patio for a refreshing morning dip or evening in the hot tub. • The lower level offers a sunken theater room with a fireplace, an arcade, and an exercise room with custom metal and glass doors and mirrored walls.

It was a natural expansion from building new custom homes into remodeling. The land supply began to shrink. More and more homeowners wanted to stay in their current homes and remodel to adjust to their changing lifestyles. These trends presented an opportunity for Lecy Bros. to help homeowners transform their living space and increase the equity in their homes. Already having the employees and processes in place, we applied our high standards of detail and craftsmanship to this new remodeling adventure. Now, we have been remodeling homes for more than 25 years.

With low-pitched rooflines and large overhangs, this modern prairie design fits in perfectly within its river bluff location. Once dark and closed off, this remodeled home from Bruce Lenzen Design Build is now flooded with natural light.
DIRECTIONS: From I-94 take Exit 1 WI-35 N./2nd Street to Coulee Road; Turn right and continue on Coulee Road to Birkmose Park Lane; Turn right and continue up the hill to the left to the home
• The exterior is clad in stucco and stone with a standing seam metal roof. • Rearranged living areas used the highest point of the original home to create a 13foot ceiling in the great room. • Large windows were added to take in the incredible views and provide muchneeded natural light to the home. • A modern style was integrated through the interior with clean lines and monochromatic finishes. • The owners’ suite is a relaxing retreat with a freestanding Barclay tub set against a wave tile backdrop.
• The cabinetry is a combination of white oak with a white high-gloss finish, while the stonework and tile create stunning textural interest throughout the home. • Porcelain matte kitchen countertops and full-height backsplash mimicking calacatta gold marble grace the gourmet kitchen, while a pot filler at the range, built-in coffee maker, and wine storage make hosting dinner parties a dream. • The new lower level has something for everyone—a bar, pool room, exercise room, and even a golf simulator.

The homeowners of this 1929 Mediterranean stunner fell in love with the details and history of the home. When the time came to remodel, they had two main objectives: create a highly functioning private quarters on the second floor and multi-functional spaces for entertaining all throughout the home. • Rather than building on an addition, creative design maximized the existing spaces and allowed the family to focus on interior details without changing much of the home’s original exterior presence.
DIRECTIONS: From I-94 exit south at the Cretin Avenue Exit; Travel south and take a right at Fairmount Avenue; Turn left at Woodlawn Avenue and the house is on your left
• This remodel marks the second time Vujovich worked on this home, as the new homeowners were confident the team knew the home well after working with the previous homeowners on a kitchen remodel. • As with most turn-of-the-century homes, storage space was lacking, so a new owners’ suite now includes two highly functional closets and a spacious, spa-inspired bath along with a lovely new rooftop balcony over the main-floor sunroom. • Work on the children's side of the second level included moving walls and creating custom built-in storage to provide two equal bedrooms with a roomy adjoined bathroom between.
REMODELER BIO ON PAGE 97
• White oak hardwood floors can be found underfoot through most of the home, with luxury vinyl in the exercise and laundry
rooms, dolomite tile in a herringbone pattern in the master bath, encaustic tile in the powder room, and ceramic hex tile in the kids’ bathroom. • Descend the staircase featuring custom ironwork matching the main grand staircase to a fully finished entertainment level complete with a custom private bar and wine cellar. • The fully renovated lower level includes a lounge area with custom walnut bar cabinets, Cambria Skara Brae countertops and backsplash, and a built-in wine refrigerator with matching refrigerator drawers. • Before, the space included compartmentalized rooms that were rarely used, but it now functions as an open gathering space that can be closed off when need. • One key goal was to reuse original items found in the basement such as the leaded glass doors that now lead to the fully equipped gym.

OA DESIGN + BUILD
4917 Girard Avenue S., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55419
An incredible undertaking, this 1918 Spanish Colonial got a new lease on life from OA Design + Build. The home exemplifies the possibilities of mixing historic and contemporary styles while creating an ultra-resilient residence! • This stunning home is ready to weather any storm with a new exterior that greets its owners with blue panels and open joint cladding. • Going from a three-bedroom, onebathroom home to a six-bedroom, four-bathroom home, this contemporary masterpiece uses a fraction of the energy it did before and accommodates multigenerational living. • The home was initially limited in living areas, but a healthy expansion and big changes through the interior made way for an office, library, mudroom, powder bathroom, and relocated sunroom on the main level.
• Upstairs, the new floor plan created space for additional bedrooms including an owners’ suite with a private balcony. • The details and warmth will amaze you, from the brushed gold hardware to the dark-painted millwork that contrasts with the lighter wall colors. • Pure artistry comes to life in the showstopping vanity with hand-carved stone sinks, quartzite countertop, and door and drawer fronts crafted from Russian olive wood and flanked by rock elm. • This home features some never-beforeseen products including new PVC panel cladding from Azek and Marvin’s new Skycove, an immersive glass alcove.

Just steps from Minnehaha Creek and Lake Harriet, this Tudor home is a work of art. Santanni Custom Homes met the homeowners’ goal of maintaining the historic aesthetics while seamlessly creating a functional floor plan for modern living. • To maintain the Tudor look, stucco finishing and a mixture of shake siding grace the exterior, along with new windows that simulate divided light. • Inside, walls were opened to relocate the kitchen and give the entire main level a more open floor plan. • The updated kitchen makes dinners at home a breeze with double ovens, an integrated refrigerator, and a walk-in pantry. • Upstairs, you’ll discover a spacious owners’ suite including a walk-in closet and a relaxing bathroom with a freestanding tub, plus a conveniently located laundry room.
• By adding a new 18’x23’ garage, the old garage was able to be repurposed into an office and much-needed mudroom. • Grab a drink at the wet bar in the dining room before heading out the new 12-foot patio door to relax on the deck. • The fine woodworking added to the powder bath is a must-see, along with the maple tongue-and-groove wainscoting and red oak flooring that ties in with the existing floors. • Explore this thoughtful design that maintains the true character of the original home and breathes new life into the layout and flow.

This Lake Minnetonka home was totally renovated to improve livability but also to bring the beauty of its glorious location to nearly every room. With a distinctive Mediterranean style, the choppy floor plan was reimagined to ensure modern living and delightful views of the lake and nearby Crane Island from every living space. • Raising ceiling heights and rooflines provided volume while the footprint for the home and garage was expanded to create an open main level, truly livable downstairs, a bonus guest suite above, plus protected indoor-outdoor spaces worthy of its perfect setting. • The main-floor owners’ suite reigns supreme with its own sitting room overlooking the lake plus black and white window-pane tiled floor, large shower, and a Victoria and Albert Barcelona freestanding tub in the spa bath. • Each of the five bathrooms was co-designed by a family member, displaying their creative abilities and love of art through color, texture, and graphic design. • Downstairs, a quartzite waterfall-edge bar separates the game and bar area from the media room, a glass-enclosed wine room
shines, and the outdoor kitchen/cabana beckons you outside. • In addition to three bedrooms downstairs and an amazing owners’ suite on the main floor, the bonus room upstairs is accessed via its own stairwell and can serve as a guest suite or family getaway with bedroom, private bath, and living space with a kitchen counter. • Beautifully crafted and awash in color, a favorite feature will be the kitchen island’s Labradorite top that echoes the lake’s color and glimmer on a sunny summer day. • You’ll love so much about this gorgeous remodel, including the 14-foot chevron patterned tile fireplace, the 14-foot ceilings with king and queen beams in the great room, and the bluestone patio with built-in firepit.
