No One Tide Is the Same We are living in unprecedented times. We can go back into history and try and compare and contrast when plaques, famine, or economic disaster has caused havic on the world but with changing times come changing tides and no one tide is the same. If you spend your time on the Internet or watching news all day long you would think that the second coming of Jesus is within a couple of weeks. The negativity that is thwarted on the general public is unbearable at times. Instead of hearing of hope we are given stories of death. Instead of sharing of the great numbers of recovery we are told that the worst is yet to come. That has caused the hysteria that we see in our grocery stores and community. What should be do when faced with this much negativity? Where do we find hope in hopeless times? It’s as simple as one word, Jesus. Some would say that is the Sunday School answer to anything that causes discomfort but isn’t that the answer we need? Jesus came to seek and save those which were lost, but not only did he come to save he came to give hope to the hopeless.

goods that will perish or maybe we will not prepare enough and need a helping hand. Regardless the tide of life can only be calmed by the one who is in control. Maybe you remember the account of Jesus calming the storm when the disciples was not prepared for the storm they were in. In an instant Jesus spoke “Be still” and the waters were calm. When learning what to do when a rip tide takes you under the first thing a life guard will tell you is to be calm, do no freak out. When you are calm you do allow the tide to control you but that is the way to safety. During these unprecedented times I encourage you to be calm, be still, and allow Jesus to control the storm, because when he speaks “Be Still” the tide will have no other choice but to still.

No matter how hard we try we will never be able to predict, time, and prepare for what’s coming next. Maybe at times we will over prepare and be stuck with

PARENTING POINTS

Pandemic Parenting 3 Tips for Pandemic Parenting

The other day I gave my daughter Holly permission to cut up magazines and use as much tin foil as she wanted, to create what I think will be a gorgeous mobile. I want to hang it over our dining table, if she’ll let me. It touched me to watch her snip and glue. I cheered her on in her wonderful mess, as parents do, no matter the age or stage of their child. In non-pandemic days, I can’t imagine Holly, a college student, would take time to build a mobile, and I wouldn’t have sat at the table and watched her (or been allowed to). These are the days of long pauses and strong pulls in different directions, of moments of confusion and seconds of clarity. No one really knows exactly how to be right now. These are especially tender days for parents, as we walk with our children through uncharted land. Families, we are in this together. So, here is a little of what I am trying to remember. 1. Put on your own oxygen mask. We’ve all heard that announcement on the airplane: “Please place the mask over your own mouth and nose before assisting others.” We wonder how we could possibly take care of ourselves first. But we might pass out and be of no use to anyone if we don’t do this simple act of self-care survival. Take care of yourself, and you will be a better parent. Sleep. Eat. Exercise. Firmly close your bedroom door when you need to. Read your Bible. Pray, even in bursts. Buy coffee whenever you have a chance, just in case. 2. Try not to compare. We have friends having basketball shooting competitions in their driveways and playing marathon sessions of Settlers of Catan while eating homemade pizza. When we compare, we usually give ourselves a failing grade. Your neighbour’s kid is learning Latin, and you’d just like Ben to learn to make his bed. It’s okay. Keep your eyes and heart on your own quirky, imperfect, wonderful family. Everyone will learn everything they need to survive in the world. It doesn’t have to happen in the next three weeks. 3. Embrace what this time does offer. What we have right now are long hours under the same roof, and that is the one thing we usually lack with our typical busy schedules. There is time to read out loud until someone begs you to stop, to try to play a game and finish it without a fistfight, and to find one movie everyone can agree on and then watch it through to the end. The gift of this time is having the time, and that is worth embracing. -Karen Stiller Author of The Minister’s Wife (Tyndale) www.karenstiller.com

MONEY MATTERS Helping College Grads Face Job Uncertainty If your college graduation ceremony has been canceled because of the coronavirus, I’m so sorry. I know that wasn’t what you guys were expecting or hoping for, and it’s okay to be sad about it. That is real stuff ! This probably also throws a curve ball at your postgrad plans, especially when it comes to job hunting. But here’s something else I know: You guys are smart and hardworking, and we’re going to get through this. So, here are my top six tips for transitioning into the workforce after college during these crazy times. Write down your goals Yes, the coronavirus might’ve forced you to rethink some of your goals and plans, but that doesn’t mean they need to go out the window. At the end of the day, your vision for your life shouldn’t change. Write down your big-picture goals and put them where you can see them to keep you motivated. Update your resume Right now, the job search process might look a little different than it normally does, but here’s one thing that won’t change: You’ll need an up-to-date resumé. Spend some time making it current by adding your college jobs, internships and accomplishments (and try to keep it to one page). Apply for a job—any job! With the job market as weird as it is right now, this isn’t the time to be proud or picky when it comes to your job options. Even if it’s not what you want to do for your career, just find someplace that’s hiring—Target, Kroger, Walmart, Uber Eats, Shipt, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack and UPS are a few that I know of—so you can at least have a steady paycheck. You’ll still gain experience and build up your resume, and when things get better, you can start looking for something else. You also might want to consider starting a side hustle like online tutoring, freelance writing and editing, or nannying (if health and safety allow) to get you through this time. Keep making connections No matter where you work, you’ll meet all kinds of people. You never know who might be a valuable connection or job lead in the future. Always bring your A game to any job you have—whether it’s restocking shelves or delivering pizza. Your boss could be the one to write you a reference or letter of recommendation later on down the road. Don’t take on debt Don’t panic and sign up for a credit card! Loans will only cause you more stress in the long run. If you’re trying to pay off current debt and dealing with job uncertainty right now, I feel your pain. Know that you might need to pause your debt snowball and just focus on generating whatever income you can to cover your Four Walls—food, utilities, shelter and transportation—until you can get back on your feet. But after that, it’s game on! Stay at home I know you never imagined living at home with your parents after college. But with these uncertain times, I’m all for it! It saves you money and the stress of trying to pay rent while you’re unemployed. If moving home to live with mom and dad for a little while is an option, take it. You guys, you’re about to graduate from college. You’ve worked hard for years, and I promise that hard work will pay off. Don’t forget to celebrate everything you’ve achieved (even if you’re celebrating at home), and keep it up. I’m proud of you! - Anthony ONeal Since 2003, Anthony has helped hundreds of thousands of students make smart decisions with their money, relationships, and education.

Be Professional and Respectful Dear Dave, I’ve always made good money at my job, but recently I was offered a promotion to a salaried manager’s position. The hours and pay would be much better, and I already know the approximate pay range. Do you have any tips for negotiating salary in a situation like this? - Natalie Dear Natalie, Congratulations on your move up! I’m sure you worked hard and deserve the promotion and recognition. There are a couple of measuring sticks you can use when determining something like this. One is a quick and simple approach associated with the revenue you bring in. It’s a nice, quantifiable reference point that appeals to a lot of supervisors and business owners. The second thing you could do is research a few reputable career websites, and develop a short but detailed compensation study based on comparable positions in your area and those similar to your location. Honestly though, if I had a valued and respected member of my team moving up from hourly to salaried, we’d have more of a give-and-take discussion and examination of the situation rather than a negotiation. Yeah, in your position I’d create a few well-researched compensation studies. Give them to your bosses, and talk with them. I know I would be impressed by that, and depending on the size of the company, they may not have done a lot of work figuring it out. In a way, it’s kind of like deciding what to ask for when you sell a car. You try to appraise it for what it’s worth in the marketplace to other people. That leads to a discussion. You’re not telling them what to do or presenting an ultimatum, you’re providing information and conducting a dialogue in a professional and respectful way. Good luck, Natalie! — Dave Ramsey

A Quiet Strength: Behind the Scenes of Chick-fil-A

S. Truett Cathy founded one of the largest fast food restaurant chains in America, Chick-fil-A, in 1946. Do you recognize the name Jeannette M. Cathy? Wife to Truett Cathy, Jeannette played a very important role in Chick-fil-A’s success, albeit mostly behind the scenes. Trudy Cathy White watched her mother provide their family with a quiet strength grounded in faith. “She was very committed, passionate and full of compassion for people. My mother was an encourager and a real prayer warrior.” The impact of her mother was so strong, White felt compelled to share her legacy with others in her latest book A Quiet Strength: The Life and Legacy of Jeannette M. As a child, White remembers finding her mother reading her Bible and praying often, even during a busy day. “Everything in her life taught me what it meant to walk with the Lord.” Jeannette also played a critical support role as the wife of Truett Cathy. “While Dad was focused on building the business, Mom was focused on building the family.” White adds that her mother cared deeply for others from all walks of life and nurtured a positive attitude. “She was the type of person that when it rained, she would get out her brightest umbrella.” When Chick-fil-A first opened in 1946, founder S. Truett Cathy was 27 years old and his wife Jeannette was only 25 years old. Surprising Facts. White shares that her mother had a difficult childhood. She never knew her earthly father because he left the family when Jeannette was only three months old. However, at a very young age, Jeannette was introduced to her heavenly Father. “My mom had a very vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ, and she was totally captivated by the idea that she could have a Father and that He would be a perfect Father to her.” Jeannette had a unique childhood because her mother was a talented seamstress and as her daughter, she spent countless hours growing up backstage in the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. Jeannette was able to achieve her dream of attending college and seminary thanks to ladies from her church who put their money together to make it happen. “She continued that learning spirit. She was a lifelong learner but was rarely in the spotlight,” says White. Her mom became a self-taught artist at the age of 65. Jeannette’s Legacy as a Mother & Wife. SPECIAL FEATURE

To The Graduation Class of

Clearly there are no words of consolation that I can offer you, the graduating class of 2020. I do not think anyone could foresee a global pandemic that could drag on for months, with no real end in sight. My heart goes out to you seniors who will not have a spring sports season, a prom, nor hear “Pomp and Circumstance” as you walk across the stage with your fellow seniors at your graduation ceremony. My daughter was to graduate from college in May and was heartbroken when she was informed during spring break that her final semester of college was cancelled. I have watched her go through a period of real grief, but now she seems to have moved to a stage I would call “acceptance.” She realizes that she now needs to move on to the next season of her life, and she is doing it courageously. You too will now be moving on to the next chapter of your life. I have two books that will be helpful on your journey. The first is my newest book, Reflections on the Existence of God. It contains 57 short essays divided into ten sections. It is easy to read and understand. The book serves a number of purposes, including strengthening the faith of Christians as well as equipping students to go out and engage the skeptical culture we live in. Pew Research did a study that sought to answer the question, “Why do some students abandon the church and their faith after graduating from high school?” One of the reasons they discovered was that students often had questions and doubts that no one ever addressed. This book answers those questions. The second book, A Life of Excellence: Graduation Edition, is a book on living wisely and effectively. Deep down, we all know that a life of excellence is achievable, yet we often lack the will and discipline to follow through on what we know to be true. This book lays out three of the most important principles in life. These principles are not good nor bad, moral or immoral, they are simply true. When we live our lives in harmony with these principles we flourish. My prayer for you, the graduating class of 2020 is that you would realize that if you want to have an exceptional life, a life of excellence, and truly reach the potential God has endowed you with; you must walk down certain paths that most people are not willing to walk. But when you do, it will make all the difference in the quality of your life and the legacy you leave behind. - Richard E. MISSIONS Morning in Mobile, Al means it is evening in Jakarta, Indonesia. Though we live in entirely different parts of the world and time zones, we are all experiencing similar things. The entire world, for the most part, is taking part in the “stay at home” initiative. Although not everyone is joining in, many are staying home to slow the spread of COVID19.

the death rate among Christians in areas of persecution is much higher. As deeply troubling as this fact is, even worse still are the families who are unable to comfort dying loved ones due to quarantine protocols. Many times when a family member tests positive for COVID19 and goes to the hospital, the families are saying goodbye in those moments. Though they may suffer in isolation from family, once they depart this world, they enter into the arms of our Savior. The time of the COVID19 crisis has called us all to “stay home.” One of the most fruitful things you, as believers, can fill your time with is prayer. Take daily time to get on your face, devoting yourself to prayer. Prayer points for Indonesia are much like things we would pray for our community. However, there are some specific things we as a church can pray over for our fellow believers there in Indonesia.

The time we are living in has allowed many of us to connect over various forms of digital platforms, but not all have access to this luxury. Like many of you, Jack Hester and I were able to take advantage of a video call this morning. We had the opportunity to connect with our friend and co-laborer in the gospel there in Jakarta, Indonesia. Kongkin is our Open Doors partner there in that part of the World. Over the past few months, he has had some health complications with his heart, but thanks be to God that he is well and taking better care of himself. During this time, he has even gotten out for weekly exercise on his bike to ride down to his office and accomplish a little work. His family, too, is well and staying home.
