Basketball has been in my blood for years. I played it as a child, teen, and as an adult and quickly am finding out that it may be time to retire. The last time I stepped on the court, I played well but hurt more than I ever had. It is something about our frail bodies. If you watch the news, you have seen that Kobe Bryant, one of the most iconic basketball stars in the world, died in a recent helicopter accident. I took this picture when I went to see him back in December of 2010 when the Lakers played the New Orleans Hornets, now Pelicans. The news struck me hard because Kobe was not that much older than me, and I loved watching him play, his philanthropic progress since retiring from the NBA, and his ever growing love for family. They have interviewed a ton of people just in the short period since his death occurred, and over and over again, people go back to the same line, “basketball doesn’t matter.” When I was young, all I cared about was getting home, throwing my book bag inside, and grabbing my basketball. Even as a young youth pastor, I was passionate about coaching basketball with my high-school and middle-school teams, but basketball doesn’t matter. If all the focus is on a sport or skill, we have missed the point.

to love our neighbors as ourselves. Regardless if it’s basketball or basket weaving, if we replace the love that we should have for our creator God and to others with something else we have missed poorly. Kobe wasn’t perfect, but neither are you, and neither am I. We will fail, but thankfully God’s grace can cover our sins, and his Spirit can point us to praise and honor the God who gives us life. We are not promised tomorrow, but we are given a promise. Take hold of that promise and spread the good news of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Bargainomic$ Valentine’s Day on a Dime

OK, maybe you can’t do Valentine’s Day on a dime, but here are some budget-friendly ideas for making your Valentine’s Day special: 1. Go out for breakfast or lunch instead of dinner. 2. Dress up and go to a fancy restaurant just for dessert and coffee. 3. Be a local tourist: (a)Do some hand-holding and birdwatching along the three-mile National Recreation Trail on Dauphin Island. (b) Drive over to Fairhope and enjoy a stroll around town and out on the city pier.

3-Ingredient Chocolate Cherry Cake

You’ll impress your sweetheart and your whole family with this super simple recipe. All you’ll need is a box of chocolate cake mix; a can of cherry pie filling; and ¾ cup of melted margarine (1 ½ sticks). Preheat the oven to 350. Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick cooking spray. Spread the pie filling evenly over the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the pie filling. Drizzle the melted margarine evenly over the cake mix. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the edges are bubbly. Serve hot as is, or topped with vanilla or fudge marble ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup.

Replace those old floors

Instead of spending for real wood floors or throwing away money on laminate flooring that will easily warp if it ever gets wet, look into luxury vinyl flooring. Many of these thick, heavy-duty tiles are peel-‘n’-stick and look exactly like ceramic tile or even wood flooring, but are easy to cut and install yourself and can even be grouted. After several tiles in my laundry room cracked, I decided to give the luxury vinyl a try. It was so easy, I took up the old tile and installed the vinyl in only one day, albeit a very long day. It looked so good I went on to replace all my bathroom tile with vinyl. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my new flooring and I never have to worry about another cracked tile.

Closing thoughts

My Daddy used to tell me I needed my “wanter” turned off. I think a lot of us would do well to heed Daddy’s advice. The Old Testament prophet Habakkuk addressed this issue: “Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own” (Habakkuk 2:6b, ESV). The NIV goes on to say: “Will not your debtors suddenly arise? Will they not wake up and make you tremble? Then you will become their victim” (Habakkuk 2:7). Strong words, but if you’re being haunted by overdue debts, you can certainly relate to feeling like a victim. Put needs before wants. Pay your debts before fulfilling wants. Refuse to be foolishly indebted.

Dave Says

Emergency fund first, then investing Dear Dave, Do you think I should stop making contributions to my 401(k) for a year, so I can save up an emergency fund? I’m 28, and debt-free, but I don’t have anything saved for emergencies. - Bryan

Keep it small, and budget for it Dear Dave, I’m trying very hard to get out of debt. I have my beginner emergency fund in place, and I’m living on a monthly budget. Is it okay to include a little wallet cash in my budget at this point, just in case? - Andrew

Dear Bryan, If you’re debt-free and making decent money at your job, it shouldn’t take a whole year to set aside an emergency fund. Just make it a priority in your monthly budget. And yes, my advice to you is temporarily stop making contributions to your 401(k) until you have a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. I recommend people stop investing, or wait to start investing, until they are debt-free except for their home and have a fully-funded emergency fund in place. In some cases, depending on how much debt they have, it can take two or three years to do all this. I know that seems like a long time, but in the grand scheme of things it’s really not.

Dear Andrew, It’s probably not going to throw you off too much in terms of getting out of debt if you budget $20 or so, just to have some cash in your wallet. I wouldn’t recommend much more than that, though. The idea of having $50, $100, or $200 in walking around money is pretty self-defeating when you’re supposedly saving, budgeting, and working hard to get out of debt.

If you don’t have an emergency fund, but you’re contributing to a 401(k), there’s a good chance you’ll end up cashing out your 401(k) if a large, unexpected expense comes along. Then, when you cash out a 401(k) early, you get hit with a penalty plus your tax rate. That’s not a wise plan! —Dave

What really matters is the amount of pocket money you allow yourself to have.

Think of it as a safety valve. Sometimes things come up in the course of day-to-day life that are just necessary, unexpected expenses—but not emergencies. Just designate a small amount of cash for it as part of your regular, monthly budget, and stick to that amount! —Dave

I once asked a group of students to offer one word which best describes the gospel of Jesus. When the class had finished offering words about salvation, atonement, and repentance, we turned to Mark’s gospel and encountered a word that was not offered by any of the students. Jesus preached the good news of the in-breaking kingdom, a word which Mark used to encapsulate the gospel. It is a word curiously absent from most soteriological discussion, and our theology is impoverished by its loss. Dr. Tony Evans has been preaching and teaching about the kingdom of God for over fifty years. In his new commentary of the Bible (Holman Bible Publishing), Dr. Evans offers a passage-by-passage exposition of the scriptures. Central to his understanding of the gospel is an appreciation of the sovereign rule of God. From Genesis to Revelation, Dr. Evans invites the reader to live every aspect of their life as citizens of the kingdom of heaven. The rule of God is comprehensive and empowering, for there is nothing about the human condition which is of disinterest to God. As disciples of Jesus, the kingdom of God should be what defines us. Dr. Evans is the founder and senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas. He is the author of over one hundred publications and his radio broadcast is heard in more than 130 countries, including more than 1,000 outlets in the United States. He is the first African-American to publish a substantive Bible commentary and study Bible. These are very significant accomplishments, but the most important contribution of Dr. Evans’ ministry is a lifetime of faithfully sharing the gospel of God, proclaiming that the time is now, the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the good news. - Darrel Holcombe, Owner Sanctuary Christian Books and Gifts Colonial Promenade, Alabaster 205-663-2370 PHOTO CAPTION: Dr. Tony Evans studied at Dallas Theological Seminary and has written over one hundred publications, including the books Kingdom Man and Kingdom Woman. Special Feature

Why Every Day Should be Sanctity of Human Life Sunday As a nation, we recently mourned on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday the almost 62 million babies of all races killed by abortion since the Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade. This solemn occasion is the result of President Ronald Reagan’s historic 1984 Presidential Proclamation of National Sanctity of Human Life Day, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Sanctity of Life Human Sunday, the third Sunday of each January, commemorates the lives lost to abortion and proclaims protecting human life at every stage Life is precious and begins at conception. It’s heartbreaking and unfortunate that this is a controversial statement. I strongly believe that as a society we are judged by how we protect those who are the most vulnerable, and given the unborn cannot speak for themselves, there is no group more vulnerable. Having watched my children experience the miracle of life with their growing families and welcoming eight grandchildren into this world, as well as, expecting two more have only further cemented my unwavering belief in safeguarding the unborn’s right to life. In 47 years since the Roe v. Wade decision, the medical community has made massive medical advances that clearly establish that life begins at conception. A heartbeat can be heard as early as 6 weeks after conception! Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knows the unborn, and God is growing that child with a purpose in our world. The black and white ultrasound picture clearly shows this growing baby. The day after our tribute to the millions of unborn babies, the third Monday every January, our nation honors the most famous American civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s peaceful struggle against racial discrimination and civil rights was valiant, and the delivery of his 1963 speech “I have a Dream” was the impetus of a movement that led to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. Is it coincidental that the day our nation honors the unborn, and the day our nation honors the man who was instrumental in the decision to outlaw discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin are on consecutive days? I think not. As a nation, we still have unfinished business to protect the lives of the unborn as we continue our nation’s civil rights fight. This is a fight against the worst form of discrimination, discrimination against life. - Arnold Mooney Alabama State Representative District 43 Candidate for U.S. Senate

THE LORD’S PROVISION

FOX10’s Chelsey Sayasane “Completely the Lord’s provision,” says Chelsey Sayasane of her journey to Fox10. You may have seen Chelsey in the mornings scanning across local broadcasts as she works at Fox10, whom she calls her family. A graduate of Saraland High School and a former Miss Saraland High School, Chelsey figured out that she loved working with the public, though was not sure where that would take her in life. The Lord would soon open the door for a number of opportunities through her life, one being a part of the University of Mobile. “My mom graduated from there, and it was one of the schools I was interested in going to, so we toured it and I fell in love with the college,” Chelsey said. Chelsey would go on in her sophomore year and become Miss University of Mobile. She shared that college was great but did not come stress free. Majoring in Communications, though broad, there was a sense of interest in the news field. With the news

12 Bay Area Christian Family

comes competition with other people in the field, and Chelsey was young in the field but ambitious to opportunities. Being interested she contacted a friend that worked for Fox10 and found out that Chasity (Byrd) Riddick just moved on and there was a spot for a female position on Studio10. “Studio10 was my dream job,” Chelsey said. With that, that same friend she contacted dropped her name in the hat and Chelsey continued on with life at Moka’s Coffee in Saraland. As Chelsey prayed for the opportunity, a couple months would pass. “I knew the Lord had something special for me but I was frustrated with the timing because I wanted it on my timing, but this was the one thing I could not control,” Chelsey shared. Whether it was high-school, college, or scholarships she was always one-step ahead but this was the one thing that she could not control and had to give it over to the Lord to handle. After giving all trust to the Lord in the situa-

tion, a couple of weeks later a message from a non-friend on Facebook came through her messages. It was a message request from Joe Emer of Fox10 requesting to talk about a position at the station. “I about hit the floor

because I was such in awe at the opportunity presenting itself. It was feeling unreal,” Chelsey said. Emer would share that they had done a nationwide search but was reaching

out because a couple people at the station shared Chelsey’s name with him, and unbeknownst

to Chelsey it was two friends that shared her name.

There was a bit of fear going into the first meeting Chelsey would share, but they really wanted to know is what kind of human being she was rather than seeing if she had the potential to live up to their expectations. “It was really an amazing interview and gave me a sense of comfort because it showed me how great of a people they are,” Chelsey said. After the interview she was asked to come on set to do some dry runs, meet with managers, and God opened the door on January 28th to be the first day on set. “Looking back, nothing makes sense. After doing a nationwide search of women that had been in the field for years they picked an ambitious young girl from their backyard,” Chelsey said. Since then God has been faithful but life has had its hurdles for Chelsey. Back in June of 2019 she lost her dad, Khan Sayasane. Khan immigrated here with his 7 siblings and parents when he was 13 years old. At the age of 16 he was hired by the Chickasaw Housing Authority and worked there until retiring in June of 2019 and passed not long after. The passing of her grandmother would take place 16 days before her father’s passing. One aspect that Chelsey shared she will never forget about her father is that he taught her and her sisters to work hard,

Chelsey and Khan Sayasane

go to school, and do the best you can, because not everyone has that opportunity. Not all news was disheartening for the past year for Chelsey. Longtime friend, turned boyfriend their Senior year of high-school at Saraland High, Johnny Sklopan, would pop the question and ask Chelsey to marry him. “It’s been wonderful and one of the things that makes ‘us’ work is that we really enjoy each other. We were

friends for a long time before we dated so we knew each other well. We laugh, watch movies together, laugh more, and probably laugh too much, but are excited about this next season of life together,” Chelsey shared. Sklopan has been very close with the family and her sisters especially in the passing of her father. “He takes care of them, and after my father passed he really stepped up and I got to see him in a different light in how he took care of my sisters,” Chelsey said. Sklopan proposed on December 10th and used a lot of people at Fox10 to make it happen, from setting up a fake interview for Chelsey across the bay, to getting the entire sales team to chip in on the proposal. “Before he got down on one knee he shared of the Lord and about how in this marriage we could come together and serve Him, serve one another, and learn how to do that in the new season we were entering,” Chelsey shared. Chelsey has since said ‘Yes’ to the dress and is planning her wedding with good friend and former boss Morgan Kelley. You can find Chelsey in the mornings on Studio10 where she helps spotlight what Mobile and Baldwin Counties have to offer from local events and restaurants, to charities and hidden treasures in the community.

SPecial Feature Is my teen in an Adolescent Phase—or are they participating in Out-of-Control Behavior? How can I know if my child is going through an adolescent phase, or if his out-of-control behavior is here to stay? “Every teen goes through this,” you tell yourself. But in the back of your mind, you wonder if your child’s disrespect, acting out, and destructive behavior is normal. When you’re a parent, it’s troubling and sad to think that your son or daughter has a serious problem. And it’s painful to think they might be different from other kids. It’s why many parents say “Oh, it’s just a phase. My teenager will grow out of it.” Calling it a phase is a way for some parents to avoid the unpleasant feeling in their gut that their child’s acting-out or destructive behavior is a significant problem. How do I know the difference between Normal Adolescent Phases and Inappropriate Behavior? When you look at what is considered to be a normal adolescent phase, understand that there’s a continuum. And within that continuum, you’ll see different types of behavior, depending on where your child is developmentally. So picture a line with a well-behaved child at one end and an out-of-control child at the other. I’ve found that most kids are somewhere in the middle. I believe most parents instinctively know where the line is between normal and inappropriate behavior. For example, if your child’s behavior becomes verbally or physically abusive, if she’s stealing, if she’s coming home high or drunk, or she’s not coming home at all, that’s the line. Parents may be in denial for a while, but at some point, they simply won’t be able to deny it any longer. They’ll know. So let’s look at what might be considered normal versus out-of-control teen behaviors. Normal Teen Behaviors During normal adolescence, you might observe any of the following about your child’s behavior: • Is moody and secretive • Spends much of his time alone in his room • Gets frustrated easily and stomps out of the room • Is short-tempered and impatient, especially with parents • Doesn’t want to spend time with the family • Is late for curfew • Says things like, “Only my friends understand me! I hate it here, I wish I could leave.” • Is discontented and restless As unpleasant as this is at times, this is all part of their way as teens and pre-teens to become individuals – beginning to separate from their parents—it’s part of the transition from childhood to adulthood. Out-of-Control Teen Behaviors But some behaviors are not normal. Rather, they’re warning signs. The following behaviors fit into this category: • Stealing • Being physically abusive to others or destructive in the house

20 Bay Area Christian Family

• Being verbally abusive, intimidating or threatening • Abusing a younger sibling • Coming home drunk or high • Staying out all night • Getting arrested Make no mistake—there’s something wrong with these behaviors. Parents who tell themselves “it’s just phase” or “it’s what teenagers do” are setting themselves up for a rude awakening later on. If any of this is going on in your house, remember that the earlier you intervene with your child, the better. The sooner you tell your child that what he’s doing is not acceptable and give him the tools he needs to behave differently, the better. Understand that kids who seek control by acting out—by being physically abusive, verbally abusive, destructive, or abusing substances—don’t know how to solve problems. They don’t know how to make friends or communicate in a way that gets their needs met. So they turn to other ways to get their needs met—they turn to drugs and alcohol and inappropriate behavior. Dealing with Your Child’s Thinking Errors Parents of acting-out kids ask, “Is my son angry? Is he frustrated?” The answer is usually, “Yes, he is. But probably not for the reasons he’s telling you.” An acting-out child will say things like: “If you’d leave me alone, I’d behave better.” Or he’ll tell you it’s the school’s fault: “They don’t understand me there, they keep picking on me.” The reality is that your child’s feelings of anger and frustration are coming from his inability to solve problems such as getting along with other people, managing impulses, and following directions. His anger and frustration are also coming from his unwillingness to make the right choices or his inability to ask for help. A child in this situation is making thinking errors. Just as there are spelling errors and math errors, there are also thinking errors. When your child blames somebody else for a problem he caused, that’s a thinking error. When he tells you that it’s somebody else’s fault that he broke a window, that’s also a thinking error. You see kids use all kinds of thinking errors: they’ll blame you, justify their behavior, and lie. Acting-out kids are willing to back up their thinking errors by punching a hole in the wall or calling you foul names.

Focus on Thoughts and Behavior, Not Feelings If your child doesn’t know how to get along with people, he might try to control the situation through his behavior, manipulation, and dishonesty. And if you ask what he feels, he won’t answer, he will just become more aggressive because he is not clear how to respond. They truly don’t know how they feel. Many times, their feelings are so uncomfortable that they won’t acknowledge them in the first place. That’s why it’s vitally important to focus on thoughts and behavior, not feelings. Reality is, when we get our thoughts and behavior under control our feelings will generally improve. This is why it is best that you teach them to act and think differently-to eliminate the thinking errors-so that their mood and feelings improve. Kids Lose Control to Get Control Here’s the truth: acting-out kids lose control as a way to get control. And it works. Here’s what I mean. Let’s say you tell your 14-year-old that it’s time to put down their phone and go do homework. They don’t want to and start freaking out and punching holes in walls. After a few such incidences, you stop telling them what to do altogether—you decide it is just not worth the fight. This is pretty normal for most parents. They stop their child from acting-out by no longer asking him to do his homework, or whatever it is he needs to do. But here’s the danger: now your child has gotten more control over you. It seems as if they lost control, but in the long run, they have gained control. Their out-of-control behavior has gotten you to stop telling them what to do. They were able to get out of doing homework. Who’s in control now. But understand that it’s an unhealthy kind of control. Believe me, if your child is doing this already, they will continue to add behavior that will increase your tolerance for this inappropriate behavior. They will keep on till you to accept this bad behavior and may even get you to consider it normal. They will push you beyond the limits of what you used to believe was wrong and inappropriate. At the same time, without realizing it you will decrease your expectations for appropriate behavior. You simply won’t expect as much from them. Little by little, your child will become comfortable using acting-out as a way to solve his problems. Kids Can Make Appropriate Choices The whole idea that an out-of-control teen or a kid with behavioral problems can’t make appropriate choices is a lie or falsehood. Having worked with teens for many years, even the most difficult ones can make appropriate choices—and they do so every day. That’s why they act out with some teachers but not with others. Or they act out at home but not at school. Or with one parent but not the other. I would hear from parents about the negative behavior they experienced at home, however these same kids in a youth detention center, where their probation officer sent them, weren’t cursing out the guards. They were saying “yes sir” and “no sir.” They were able to make good decisions when necessary, which confirms the previously mentioned point – there is something else driving their thoughts and behavior that we need to discover and clear up. It is the adolescent “Cycle of Need” When a child has been compliant and “better behaved” at one point in their life, but then things change – you must ask what has changed. When a baby cries, we feed him – meeting the need and he relaxes

(stops crying). If the issues was a dirty diaper then he will still be crying, showing us we had not met the need – and we change our response/action to meet the child’s need. In the adolescent stage we have similar behaviors, and as mentioned earlier they may not be able to clearly tell you what the need is but as a parent we must find ways to understand and meet the need. To be honest we cannot punish behavior out of a teen, rather we must home them accountable and then help them change their behavior to more appropriate ways of getting their needs met. Conclusion The idea that a child will grow out of this type of destructive behavior is not realistic. Understand that if your teen is acting out and using intimidation to get his way, he’s already put this behavior into place as his problem-solving mechanism. And the sad thing is, it works for him. The people in his life back down and let him have his way until he reaches adulthood. But then he has real problems. Or the parent holds the teen accountable but it is not producing the results expected, the teen gets even worse because of stubbornness. It may be that they are still not getting their need met – remember it is not just about punishment, it is about changing behavior. If your child reaches adulthood and doesn’t learn the all-important life skills of compromise, acceptance, and appropriate behavior, he will have trouble holding a job or staying in a healthy relationship. The harsh reality is that letting a child get away with this type of behavior will handicap him for the rest of his life. If your teen is in the adolescent stage and the things you are trying are not producing change, seek some professional help as you deal with their behavior. If there is acting out behavior - move quickly to gain help for them. - James Chinners, LICSW-PIP Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Worker Mostellar Medical Clinic Serves children and families experiencing mental health and/or substance abuse issues with the intention and purpose to bring healing and restoration into the lives of individuals so as to affect meaningful change.
