Have you read the whole thing?
Years ago, my pastor asked us a question that hit hard to my convictions as a believer in Christ. He asked if we had ever read the whole thing, the entire Bible. The answer was a no from most of our college group and myself. He gave us some resources, but being a technical guy, I leaned more so to what could help me keep on track with my smartphone, so I turned to the YouVersion Bible App. Another friend and I made a commitment to read the Bible in 90 days, and we found a 90-day plan on the app and started it soon after his challenge to our group. Ninety days later, she had finished reading the entire Bible, King James Version, and I had not. It took me another two months to finish, but after finishing the Bible as a whole, I felt a sense of success but not completion. In the span of five months, I read over scripture learned in Sunday School, listened in sermon series, and even preached myself. The Spirit spoke to me in different ways reading through the Bible along with gaining new insight on scripture I never read before or heard. The most significant impact wasn’t what God spoke to me, but what God birthed in me in that period. It was a desire to do it again, and again, and again.

If you have not journeyed through the scripture from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, then I encourage you to do so. For a believer in Christ, we hold our truths to what the scripture says, and if we don’t read what it says, how do we know what truths to hold to. You do not have to do it in 5 months, but start and allow God to increase that desire to continue searching His word, and you will be glad you did. BARGAINOMIC$ Holiday Meal Planning Guide
How much is enough when preparing for holiday dinners? The following info will help. The servings are generous, so for small children, count one serving per two children. Meat - If using a whole turkey, 1 lb. per person. If using ham or turkey breast, ½ lb. per person. Dressing - 1 cup per person. Bread - 2 rolls or servings per person. Beans/vegetables - 1 lb. of dried beans serves 6 people; for prepared vegetables, ½ cup per serving. Creamed potatoes - 1 cup per serving. An average potato will yield one serving, so figure 1 potato per person. Gravy - 1/6 cup per serving. Pies - 1 average pie serves 6 people. Cakes - An average 2-layer cake serves 10 people. Tea, coffee, or other beverage - For dinner beverage (tea), figure on 3 - 8 oz. servings per person (24 oz. per person). 1 gallon = 128 ounces, or 5+ servings. For after dinner beverage (coffee), figure one 8-oz. serving per person.

KEEP THOSE FILTERS HANDY!
I don’t know about you, but I prefer breakfast bars, donuts and other pastries warm rather than room temp. Use a #4 coffee filter as a warming sleeve for your donut or other snack. Just slip the snack into the filter, microwave it for a few seconds and PRESTO! You can heat ‘n’ eat right from the filter. Grownups and kids will find these help keep crumbs corralled far better than a paper towel.
CLOSING THOUGHTS.
“Mary has made the right choice” (Jesus speaking, Luke 10:42, HCSB). In Luke 10 we read about one of Jesus’ visits to the home of His dear friends Lazarus, Mary and Martha. While Mary bustled around polishing silverware, putting together floral arrangements, and laying out placemats and place cards, Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His teaching. Martha, upset because she had been left to do all the work alone, interrupted the lesson, saying, “Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand” (verse 40). Stressed out over the little things, Martha failed to see the biggest thing of all: an opportunity to sit at the feet of the Master. Don’t miss out on what’s important because you’re tied up with secondary issues. Your home doesn’t have to be perfect for holiday guests – just welcoming. — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? MONEY MATTERS
Dave Says
Dear Dave, Does the amount you advise saving for a beginner emergency fund in Baby Step 1 double for a couple, or does it stay the same? — Charlie Dear Charlie, Whether you’re single or married, Baby Step 1 of my plan is to save $1,000 as quickly as possible for a starter emergency fund. This may not sound like a lot of cash to have on-hand in the event of an emergency, but you need to remember the $1,000 figure is a temporary thing. Baby Step 1 is saving up $1,000 for a beginner emergency fund. Baby Step 2 is paying off all debt, except your home. The vast majority of folks working my plan are debt-free, except for their mortgage, in two years or less. Then, you move to Baby Step 3, which is increasing your emergency fund from $1,000 to three-to-six months of household expenses. In reality, we’re talking about a pretty short period of time where you’d have just $1,000 in emergency savings. Plus, it serves as an exercise in financial discipline. A lot of people have nothing saved before beginning the Baby Steps. If that makes things seem a little scary at the start, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. A healthy level of fear can be a fantastic motivator. I don’t want anyone constantly living their lives in fear, but that added push—that sense of urgency—can make you work harder to get out of debt, and move on to Baby Step 3, as quickly as possible!
Dear Dave, We recently started following your plan, and it has made a huge difference in our financial outlook and our marriage. When it comes to the Baby Steps, when do you recommend setting aside money for a wedding? We have a daughter, and we want to be able to do as much as possible for her when the time comes.
— Jim
Dear Jim, That’s a good question. There’s not really a Baby Step specifically for weddings. In my mind, it should probably come after Baby Step 5—setting aside a college fund for your kids. Maybe part of this is the dad in me, but in prioritizing these things I think a good education is more important than a big wedding. Don’t get me wrong, a wedding is a wonderful event and cause for lots of joy and celebration. But it’s also a one-day event. Plenty of people have inexpensive, beautiful weddings, and enjoy long, wonderful lives together! — Dave Ramsey

SPECIAL FEATURE
Home for the Holidays The Giving Manger: Celebrating the Reason for the Season What started as a desire to make Christmas centered around Jesus in a few homes has now become a tradition used in over 75,000 homes in just three years. A hand-crafted Baby Jesus, a wooden manger, a bundle of straw, and a sweet family story introduces the idea of helping others during the holiday and helps shift the focus of Christmas back to giving. How does it work? A piece of straw is placed in the manger for each kind deed or act of service performed. On Christmas Day, the Baby is placed in the manger filled with service and love. As families work together to give gifts of service, hearts and homes become filled with more joy during the holiday season. The Giving Manger comes in a box set with a book, manger, straw, and a Baby Jesus. Here are the steps to complete The Giving Manger: Step #1: Read the book as a family. Step #2: Set up the manger somewhere everyone can see throughout the day. Step #3: Print out the list of service ideas on www.thegivingmanger.com. Step #4: Begin getting excited over putting a single piece of straw in the manger when a service of giving is done each day leading up to Christmas. Step #5: Be filled with joy as kids get excited about serving others. Step #6: Watch as the Giving Manger fills with straw leading up to Christmas. Step #7: On Christmas Day, Baby Jesus is placed in the manger, and stories from the last day fills the hearts of all. To learn more and purchase The Giving Manger, visit www.thegivingmanger.com. †
When every Giving Manger currently sold was used by families last Christmas, it totaled five million acts of kindness! Founders and creators of The Giving Manger, Lisa Kalberer and Allison Hottinger, are passionate about helping families remember the real reason to celebrate Christmas is Jesus. The first Giving Manger baby Jesus was sculpted at Allison’s kitchen table and the manger was cut in Lisa’s garage.

Twas the Night That Began Christmas I now have three grandchildren, so Christmas is not only a holy time, it’s a time of laughter and joy and excitement. We will have parties and decorate our home and I’ll tell the story of the night a baby changed the world. We will sing Away in a Manger with hand-motions. We might even dance. Perhaps it’s all holy, for where two or three are gathered in His name, Jesus is in the midst of them. Even in the midst of cookies and dancing. This year I will also add a new book to our Christmas season reading, Twas the Night That Began Christmas (SBA Books), by local author Catherine Conrad Waters. Using the familiar rhyme of Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Moore, Waters’ children’s book tells the story of the night Jesus was born. But her story doesn’t end there. Twas the Night That Began Christmas also tells us why Jesus came. The rhyme continues into the ministry years of Jesus, covering his teachings and his gift of salvation. Christmas is a time when we celebrate the advent of Christ’s reign. With the birth of Jesus, God set in motion a revolution against the rule of darkness. All that stands in opposition to our Lord will bow before him some day. Until then, we will live in anticipation of his coming kingdom. We will tell the story of the night Christmas began. We will sing Away in a Manger, with hand-motions. We will eat cookies and open presents and fill our home with lights. And Granddaddy will dance. -Darrel Holcombe Photo Caption: Alabama author Catherine Conrad Waters lives in Vestavia Hills with her son Conrad.

PARENTING POINTS
The Power of With at Christmas It is the most wonderful time of the year - filled with gatherings, gifts, and endless activities. We so often love it because it is a break from the routine and an opportunity to remind ourselves of the things that truly matter. Yet before we know it, we will blink, and it will all be over. The family will have returned home, kids will be back at school, and life will return to normal. Through the power of with we can maximize the moments that we have for what matters most. In Matthew’s version of the Christmas story, he introduces Jesus through the lens of the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. Isaiah predicts that Jesus’ name will be “Immanuel,” which Matthew defines as “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). Jesus is the with us God. One of the beauties of the message of Christmas is that Jesus comes to get into the messiness of our lives and the brokenness of our world. He doesn’t run from the mess yet comes to meet us in the middle of our mess to rescue us from it. The message of Immanuel is that in the midst of your Christmas and everyday life – Jesus came to be with you. In the middle of your first Christmas with an empty seat due to losing a loved one, Jesus is with you. In the middle of the diagnosis that redefines Christmas, Jesus is with you. In the midst of the Christmas that isn’t as perfect as you imagined, Jesus is with you. At the core of Christmas, there is an invitation to be with. The different pace of life, the kids out of school, and the family around the table all offer an invitation to be with. We have extra time and moments with those we love to grow deeper in our family relationships. Jesus also wants to be with us. To remind us that the invitation of communion is always open. To remind us that we are loved and pursued even in the middle of the brokenness in our lives. This Christmas, ask yourself two questions: 1. How are you creating times to be with your kids and family? 2. How are you connecting with the One who the season was meant to celebrate?

A Champion on and off the field The harder the battle the sweeter the victory. It hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows for Bobby Henley, now World Series Champion. The Washington Nationals won their first as a club this past October against the Houston Astros. Bobby’s road to becoming a champion started early on in Grand Bay, Ala.
a pitcher and a short stop but would sit down next to the catcher in between innings and desire to be involved in every play like the catcher was. After asking his dad if he could switch he would finally get the chance and that is where the rubber meets the road in Bobby’s baseball journey.
Parental Influence
Moving Positions
Bobby is the oldest son to Chris and the late Bob Henley of Grand Bay, Alabama. Both of tall stature Bobby shared the unique story of a Westpoint Mississippi boy meeting a St. Louis Missouri girl in Los Angeles at the Ms. Tall USA Pageant. Bob would ask her to dance and the rest would be history as they would make their home in Grand Bay. Both were school teachers so Morning Breakfast had to be quick as both were school teachers, Bob teaching Math and Chris elementary, so the menu was Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat. Financially all the needs were provided, some wants, but mainly, as Bobby would say, what he wanted was to not get a whooping from his daddy. Baseball was a part of life but not at the expense of church time. This was a time when no one would dare practice or play on a Sunday or Wednesday so those times would be spend in the church house for the Henley’s. Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, and if there was a revival every one of those nights were spent at the church. That is how the Henley family rolled and that is one of the aspects of his early life that helps give Bobby his passion for the Lord now. Baseball would start at a young age for Bobby but a shift would come when he noticed the catcher having all the fun. Bobby started out in Dixie Youth as
14 Bay Area Christian Family
Catching, as with almost anything else, was a learned attribute for Bobby. He spent many days at South Alabama learning fundamentals, watching TV with his dad, watching others, and practicing to try to be the best he could be at that position. Park ball would turn into School ball at what was called Mobile County High School (now Grand Bay Middle School) and Bobby would play there from 10-12th grades. Doing exceptionally well the Montreal Expos organization would draft him, but playing professional ball wasn’t an instant transport as some would think. Selected in the 26th round in the 1991 Bobby would be available to play college ball with the Expos owning the rights to be able to sign him for one year and would sign to play with Okaloosa-Walton Community College (now Northwest Florida State College) for one season. After the year of college the Expos would exercise their right to draft Bobby. Everything seemed to be on the up and up. The track to the major leagues were set. Rookie ball, New York Penn-league, and then the Burlington Bees. This is where doubt begin to set in. The manager came to Bobby and told him that he would be playing as the third catcher. Bobby explained, If you know anything about baseball if you are told to be the third outfielder you are probably going to have a position, even if you are told to be the third infielder you will play, but being told to
be the third catcher means you are not going to play. A call home to dad was made and Bob could hear the discouragement in Bobby’s voice over the pay phone. Bob told him, “Son you sound whooped, why don’t you just come home and I’ll get you a job at the shipyard, or you can do something about it.” Bobby stated that is exactly what he needed, a kick in the rear, and from that point forward, no matter if he was catching balls in the bullpen or catching batting practice he would do it just like it was a real game to the best of his ability to show the coaches that he was ready to play. Not long after Bobby would be given the job of hitting DH every game, when the team wasn’t doing very well. As mentioned Bob and Chris were very involved in their church and they sent Bobby a cloth that they prayed over to put in his back pocket in case he would get a chance to play. And as the games came Bobby would get a couple hits every game, continue doing well, and ended up being the league leader in hitting. With that he got into the All-Star game, had enough home runs to be in the home run derby and won the MVP by getting an RBI on a bloop hit to win the game. The most unlikely player becomes one of the top players in that league. It shows that hard work, faithfulness, and steadfastness pays off in the long run.
The Major Leagues
In 1998, Bobby, made it to the major leagues with the Expos. He hit .304 with 35 hits, 8 doubles, 3 homers and 18 RBIs. On September 25, Henley had a game to remember in his brief major league tour that consisted of just 132 plate appearances. He went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in against the St. Louis Cardinals. In eight seasons in

the minor leagues, Henley hit .275 with 451 hits and 51 home runs in 495 games. After the eight seasons injury would occur on his shoulder and would cut his career short. Never in his wildest dreams would he thought he would be a big leaguer. His hopes were maybe that a college team would sign him, but to be a big leaguer and to be successful and then it be taken away with an injury Bobby stated that it was devastating and a point that he was at in his life with the Lord where he was questioning God, “What is all this about Lord?” With a wife and daughter now, a decision had to be made. Praying, “God whatever you want with my life” an opportunity was presented and Bobby would rejoin the Montreal system in 2003 as manager of the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Expos. For Bobby this was starting all over at the bottom of the barrel in a new career.
The journey of Bobby’s career would bear similarities to the World Series run for the Washington Nationals. With 19 wins and 31 loses and a less than 1% chance to win the world series, talks of everyone getting fired, players getting traded Bobby uses it now as a sermon, “I start thinking about our life, at some point in our life we are 19-31 and everything is against you, and what do you do? Do you tuck tail and run or do you press on and focus on what the the Lord has for you. When you talk about never giving up, trials of small town, late round draft pick, just wanted to play baseball at a higher level then where you are, fighting for playing time all the time, career gone after injury, start at low level of coaching, working your way up, while still being the missionary for the Lord sharing God’s love with people, and to be 19-31 and fight through all the adversity to win the World Series I do believe that our World Series win reflects my journey and that is why it is so special to me.”
Bobby and his brother Billy after the National’s won the National League Title.
more special than anything, and he knew something special was going to happen because of it. Bobby shares that it is about doing your best, even spiritually, not that works will get you to heaven, it’s about the blood of Christ, and he died for us because he loves us, and that love should be given to other people and do our very best at it. God has blessed Bobby with a wife (Catina), and two beautiful children (Anna & Joe). Bobby and Catina lead
God’s Plan in Motion
Unbeknownst to Bobby, God orchestrated this opportunity from a young age with the devotion of his father Bob and mother Chris to the Lord, to their teaching careers, and to their parenting. All of those characteristics would help Bobby teach the up and coming players get ready to be a champion in the major leagues; names like Steven Strasburg, Bryce Harper, and Anthony Rendon. Bobby stated, “Their relationship with academics and how to develop kids in education helped me years to come to develop talent in the minor leagues, communicate to people, and such. THE GIFT
OF
CARING
How Divine Direction Drives the Care of Many God’s direction for care has been given to thousands of dementia stricken individuals and families in the south Alabama area under the direction of Gina Germany, owner of Touching Hearts Senior Care. “Not knowing at the current time”, Gina says, “but in looking back through my life, it is evident God directed me to serve and care for all the people I encounter in my life and business”. It Was Not the Law She felt a calling for law and took many business law classes to prepare her for law school. But being bogged down in legal research with her eyes glued to pages after pages of legal documents was not satisfying to Gina. She changed her degree to regular business and right after graduation could not find a job. Failed interview after interview was frustrating and discouraging but landed her an uplifting and energizing interview with United Way. After countless vibrant prayers, which she had not conducted after the other interviews, she landed the job. With her prayers being answered, this job laid the ground work, Gina says, for her life caring for others. As a cradle catholic, she attended church regularly, now attends Little Flower Catholic Church, but landing this first job with United Way, Gina realized, awakened her spirituality. With this Divine jolt of career energy, Gina asked God for further direction. Divine Shot of Energy That God directed path lead her to an advertising company where she learned how to market and advertise. At the dot com start up she moved over to work with a website design company where she continued developing her advertising skills and learned the many facets of manipulating electronic words along with learning exact wording to have her advertisements well received. By also being competent to design and create websites also laid the ground work in showing Gina how technology was drastically changing business operations. Baby Boomer Crescendo Her new advertising and technology skills brought her to her next job with The American Cancer Society. It was here, Gina says, where she learned how to raise money and become aware of the soon baby boomer crescendo leading to the dementia tsunami. While at the American Cancer Society she met her current husband Richard in which he prompted her move to lower Alabama. Continual Divine direction and many prayers led her to open Touching Hearts Senior Care a company specifically devoted to caring for ill stricken, dementia victim seniors. All Types of Care

But Gina’s care path has had many challenging, demanding and provocative twists and turns. “Ironically”, Gina says, “I have been a care giver my entire life, professionally and personally”. Gina’s caring started early. With her biological father not wanting to be a part of her life, the mother/daughter bond she had with her mother was intense and iron clad. Her step father adopted her as an infant with whom she also developed a deep and strong relation. Both parents directed and guided her not only in raising her own children but unfortunately, through two divorces. After caring for her children, care weaned to her own parents with her father becoming septic, recovering yet felling prey to death a year later. Deep attention and care was even extended to her ex inlaws as well as to her sister whose death at age 47 violently and divinely shook her family. After the murder of her children’s father, another family blow, the morale and vigor of her children spiraled to disaster. A motorcycle accident crippled her daughter and drug addiction nearly claimed her son. Through these trying times Gina has ferociously manned and led the ship of her family care. God was Felt in Lower Alabama But it was her move to lower Alabama during these difficulties in her life she says, that truly bonded her relationship with God. Every meeting she attended and nearly every professional gathering she was a part of, began in prayer. With an extensive career previously taking her to various states in the mid west, “this just did not happen”, Gina declares. “My eyes were opened”, she exclaims, “and I became more aware, more aware of self and my relationship with our maker”. Public Prayer Eye Opening This frequent prayer, this communicating and displaying thanksgiving with God was “eye opening”, Gina touts. The influence of this open prayer reinforced Gina’s strength to continue her fight to better her family’s health as well as to continue her entrepreneur journey, concentrating in dementia care. Gina’s intensity in dementia care lead her in 2010 to begin training her employees specifically in dementia care. Touching Hearts Senior Care was the first care company in the state of Alabama to require their caregivers to become certified in dementia care. Being in the senior care business over 12 years has lead to the certification of nearly 100 caregivers. With her employee’s trained, Gina herself became a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Through training under the American Alzheimer’s Association, Gina became a facilitator to conduct an Alzheim-
er’s/dementia support group. Today this support group meets four times a month at two locations in south Alabama. Conference Open to the Public Understanding the public’s need for viable, true information on Alzheimer’s and other dementias, in 2012 Gina started a non-profit 501c organization, Gulf Cost Dementia Care, to give education on dementia and Alzheimer’s to individuals touched by Alzheimer’s and other dementia diseases. Under Gina’s direction, every two years this nonprofit hosts a large daylong conference open to the public. Nearly every quarter of each year, a forum or small seminar is conducted by this group or by a member of this group. With various forms of dementia, Alzheimer’s the majority of the dementia diseases, massacring today’s senior population, Gina is responsible for nudging the public to pay attention. Coupled with that nudge, she is educating victims and their families with ways to deal and manage the disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association2018 annual report, one in 7-9 individuals age 62 and over have some form of dementia and one in two to three age 85 suffer from dementia. “Through all my challenges, I now see how God has always been with me to make me strong”, Gina declares. “And every personal and professional position I have held is where God placed me to prepare me to give senior care this community so deserves.” We need more Ginas in the world to continue the fight against dementia. For information on dementia support group meetings, call Touching Hearts Senior Care 251.445.4204. H EALTHY L IVI NG Protecting Yourself Heart Disease Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in women. Yet, only 1 in 5 American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. The truth is, women are less likely to call 9-1-1 when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack themselves. It simply doesn’t occur to them to do so. And why would it? The bulk of media attention on the disease is focused on men. Here are more heart health facts: •
•
Heart disease causes 1 in 3 women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease, and the gap between men and women’s survival continues to widen. The symptoms of heart disease can be different in women vs. men and are often misunderstood. While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies of heart disease. Here’s what you need to know about the causes of heart disease and ways you can prevent it. What causes heart disease? Improper diet for many years!
Heart disease affects the blood vessels and cardiovascular system. Numerous problems can result from this, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis, a condition that develops when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke. Heart disease can take many other forms as well: • Heart failure or congestive heart failure, which means that the heart is still working, but it isn’t pumping blood as well as it should, or getting enough oxygen.
•
•
Arrhythmia or an abnormal rhythm of the heart, which means the heart, is either beating too fast, too slow, or irregularly. This can affect how well the heart is functioning and whether or not the heart is able to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Heart valve problems can lead to the heart, not opening enough to allow proper blood flow. Sometimes the heart valves don’t close, and blood leaks through, or the valve leaflets bulge or prolapse into the upper chamber, causing blood to flow backward through them, so you say, How can I prevent this?
Many things can put you at risk for these problems – ones you can control and others that you can’t. But the key takeaway is that with the right information, education, and care, heart disease in women can be treated, prevented, and even ended. Here are a few lifestyle changes you should make: Don’t smoke Manage your blood sugar Get your blood pressure under control Lower your cholesterol Know your family history Stay active Lose weight and always Eat healthy In order to have a healthy heart for life, we need B complex vitamins, C, E, and Bioflavonoids, and minerals include calcium, cobalt, copper, iodine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iron, manganese, nitrogen and silicon. Eat organic foods high in these nutrients on a daily basis and get your extra minerals in a supplement form to help back up your diet. Eat healthy and be heart healthy for life! Until next time, Stay healthy ! — Dr. Jimmy Steger N.D., PH.D., DNM Naturopath, Nutritionist & Iridologist 4412 Government Blvd, Mobile, (251) 660-1240, www.drsteger.net

MISSIONS Reaching the Nations... right where you live: Friends of Internationals Imagine just for a moment, what it might be like to go to college in Mozambique. Or Turkey. Or Pakistan, London, Brazil, Quito, Montreal, Beijing. The food is strange. The clothing is strange. The language is strange. It’s probably scary and confusing and lonely. Since 1998, Jim and Mary Mather have led the Friends of Internationals ministry at the University of South Alabama and served as surrogate family for students who are worlds away from the comforts of home. As Jim explains, Friends of Internationals is a ministry focused on developing God honoring friendship with international students, refugees and immigrants living in the Mobile area. For the Mathers, this looks a lot like sharing meals, opening up their home, creating events, forming authentic relationships, and teaching the Bible with international students on campus. “The University of South Alabama has a diverse population of students from dozens of nations,” Jim shares. “The importance of the FOI ministry relates to the clear direction of the great commission to make disciples of all nations. Students who graduate from Universities in the United States frequently become leaders in their home countries and play a strategic role in leading their nations futures.” The Mathers say one of the biggest challenges of serving the community of international students is loving people that are different than us. “It takes time and wisdom in developing significant relationships that honor the students and reflect God’s love,” Jim says. But of course it’s worth it. Jim shared one story in particular that meant a lot to both him and Mary. A young man named Hisashi Kojima came to Christ during his time studying Nursing in Mobile. The Mathers became close with him as they helped him through FOI. When he got engaged, he invited the Mathers to his wedding in Tokyo, and they were able to go! Jim writes that during their time there, they were able to connect with around 30 former Japanese student. Jim goes on to say that being able to hear how the ministry of Friends of Internationals impacted so many lives was very affirming and encouraging. Here at Mars Hill, we are partnering with Friends of Internationals to develop an international worship community called Friends of Internationals Church. “The vision is to develop an ongoing community of believers and seekers of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds into a spiritual family that loves and knows Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior,” explains Jim. Friends of Internationals Church meets the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month at 4pm at Mars Hill 1087 Downtowner Blvd. Mobile, Ala 36609. This is a great opportunity to get involved with a ministry that serves people from all over the world! Other ways church members can be involved in serving the international community is by providing food, befriending students, attending events and activities, offering to assist student in getting around town, or maybe even opening their homes during holidays when dorms close. Pray for students to be open to the gospel. — Tricia Butts Mars Hill Church Communications Director

W ELCOM E C H R I S T AYLOR The Bay Area Christian Family has been a publication in Mobile and Baldwin counties for ten plus years, and that has reached countless families, helped grow many businesses, and been an inspiration to many in need. Not too long ago I took a step and made a commitment to purchase an ad space in the magazine and had the opportunity to write an article about being a business owner. It was a great opportunity but never would I have thought that I would have the chance to acquire the publication and have the opportunity to lead the reach of a hope filled Christ centered magazine to the area. For starters let me give glory and honor to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all the blessings, opportunities, and ministry he has allowed me to be a part of. Growing up in Southern Ala, was one of the best things that God could have allowed me to do. The other day someone from another country was asking about where I was from and referenced to the term “redneck.” I had to explain that I proudly accepted the term and welcomed it into the conversation, got to tell him a little about what rednecks were like, and seemingly gave him a sense of attraction to the term after I was done explaining. I love where I am from and I believe God placed me specifically in Mobile for a reason. One of those reasons is giving me a beautiful family. I have been blessed with a beautiful God-fearing wife, Nicole, two amazing beautiful boys, Truett and Tag, and a wonderful family that surrounds us and supports us. My mother is from Singapore and my father is from Bayou la Batre so if you talk to me on the phone and then you see me in person you may get a sense of confusion that a strong southern accent comes from a guy that does not look like he should have that accent. Most of the time I turn it into comedy and we have a good time with that part of my heritage. School is one of the things I like to brag on when the subject comes up. One of my greatest achievements is being able to cram a 4-year undergraduate Bachelor’s of Science degree into seven years. That is a feat that many cannot say they have accomplished. My double major was in Education and History and plan was to become a public school teacher but God had other plans and I took a job as a Youth Pastor directly out of college. God blessed me with some great opportunities, a chance to see masses of youth shift their direction in life from sin to salvation, and be a part of lives within the community I never would have thought to be able to be a part of. After seven plus years of full-time ministry God brought me into the business world through entrepreneurship with my first company being a party rental company, CC’s Inflatables, and then shortly
In Paul’s letter to Philemon he sends a heartwarming encouragement about Philemon’s actions, “Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.” Paul would go on to write about Onesimus, which was a slave of Philemon and had become a believer in Christ through Paul’s ministry. Paul was encouraging Philemon to welcome Onesimus back as a brother in Christ instead of how culture would normally receive a runaway slave back into possession. In scripture God allows us to learn and grasp lessons that apply to our common circumstances and situations from past events and occurrences in scripture because His word is alive. Here God shows us the gospel’s power to transform people and relationships. My hope is that this publication will not just be something to read while you are waiting for a loved one in a hospital or something you pick up because it has an interesting front cover, but be a gospel centered and powerful piece in helping to transform people and relationships. Truett, Nicole, Chris, and Tag Taylor
after my first publication, The Connection Newspaper, both I still own and operate today. Never having experience in either one of those types of jobs God has given me the tools and continues to lead, guide, and direct in those businesses and was preparing me for this publication unbeknownst to me through my journey.
Thank you for allowing me to share with you and continue the hope filled publication to the Mobile and Baldwin counties. If you would like more information on becoming a contributing writer, advertiser, or subscriber to the Bay Area Christian Family Magazine you may contact me directly at 251-300-9800, or email chris@christianbayarea. com. LEGAL MATTERS
Bankruptcy in Alabama Bankruptcies in Alabama and across the nation have gone up since 2018 with about 800,000 petitions expected throughout 2019. USA Today reported that the nation averaged 2.5 petitions per each 10,000 residents. Experts also anticipate a vast number of baby boomers over the age of 65 to file a petition seeking relief from their debts. During July of 2019, four states in the nation’s southern region had the highest average rate of bankruptcies per capita. At 5.61 bankruptcies per each of the state’s 10,000 residents, Alabama ranked highest. In addition to the increase noted for consumer bankruptcies, the number of petitions filed by businesses in the Yellowhammer State grew by 4%. An unexpected job loss often contributes to filing a bankruptcy petition While there are many factors that lead a person to consider filing for relief, the main reasons are a job loss, unexpected events and overwhelming medical expenses. With regard to job losses, some of the largest companies in the U.S. implemented layoffs during 2019. The list includes older and well-known companies such as AT&T, Lowe’s and Sears. In Alabama, Lowe’s closed its Graysville store and Sears shut down its last remaining full-sized retail store in the state. Recessions are not always the cause Evidence does not support the belief that recessions always cause the greatest number of bankruptcies. In 2019, more than 40,000 workers became unemployed due to commercial bankruptcies by the end of July. This is the largest number of seven-month job losses since the financial crisis known as the Great Recession ended in December of 2009. “Gray” bankruptcies increase as baby boomers age As the nation’s baby boomers age and begin to retire from the workforce, their demographic has shown an increase in the number of bankruptcy filings. An estimated 21% of America’s elderly are faced with poverty, as reported by Forbes magazine. A retirement system that can often be ill-suited to elders’ needs combined with rising medical expenses may be two of the primary reasons why boomers seek financial relief through bankruptcy.
Once you have decided that bankruptcy is your best chance of overcoming your debt, you still have another decision to make. You will have to choose which form of bankruptcy best meets your needs. This decision may be difficult unless you are already well-informed about the different options available in Alabama. The two most common forms to choose from include Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. First, we want you to understand that you do not have to make these important financial decisions on your own. Many people find it helpful to work with an attorney when filing. This is beneficial because it provides you with current and comprehensive information about each type of bankruptcy. In this blog post, we hope to give you a helping hand with your decision by discussing the benefits of Chapter 13 bankruptcy. We will tackle the benefits of Chapter 7 in a separate post. • • • • •
Chapter 13 gives you flexibility in how you manage your payments while allowing you to keep some of your property. Choosing Chapter 13 puts an immediate stop to the often-aggressive collection attempts from your creditors. You can file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy repeatedly, which means that if a disaster strikes and places you back in debt, you may file again. Under Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you do not have to lose your property as long as you make your payments according to schedule. This form of bankruptcy enables you to avoid losing your family’s home.
The information we have discussed here is just to inform you about some of the most attractive benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Your legal counsel can give you many additional facts about all forms of bankruptcy while helping you choose what is right for your family. You can also learn more by continuing to explore our website. — Angela M Cooper Disclaimer: We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy relief under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Has something in the magazine or something you have discussed with someone or some thoughts that you have had or something that you have heard, brought you to a point of realizing that you want and need to know Christ in the truest and personal sense?
If so, below is a simple outline for someone of any age who is not a Believer to act on their desire to accept Jesus Christ into their heart as their Savior. God’s Plan of Salvation God created us to honor and serve Him Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist[b] and were created Each of us has sinned against God Romans 3:10: As it is written, “There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sin Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We each must accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior Romans 10:9: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:13: For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God and Heaven Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Good works cannot ever earn God’s forgiveness and Salvation Titus 3:5: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. God loves each of us John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
To accept Christ into your heart and life, pray a simple prayer along these lines - “Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sins. I know that Jesus died for my sins and the sins of the world. Right now, I ask Jesus into my heart and receive Him as my personal Savior. Forgive me of my sins, thank you for saving me through the blood of Jesus. Please Lord, help me live for you. In Jesus name, amen.” All scriptures are taken from The New King James Version of the Holy Bible.
