Improving Your Christian Walk

Getting started in a devotional walk with God is simple. It only requires our obedience and persistence. It’s vital to our relationship with God that we learn to ask for help, relinquish control and surrender to His will in everything we do. Daily thoughts about God and meditations with God need to be a spiritual routine in everyday life as Christians. Our relationship with God has much in common with our relationship with friends and family. When we demonstrate effort and commitment in our relationships, they flourish. When neglected or abandoned, they suffer and decline. As with any relationship, listening plays a very important part. God is a great listener, are you? God is the author of our life as He has written the chapters well before they are played out. Are your chapters filled with devotional and spiritual time with God? God desires our intimacy, relationship and trust. Through daily devotions we are able to give him that undivided attention. I encourage you to draw closer to the heart of God by building a deeper relationship with Him! Devotions help us stay focused on God. As the season changes to Fall, this is a perfect time to find

Dave Says

Dear Dave, I know you talk about having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses set aside. My husband and I are having a difficult time agreeing on exactly how much we should set aside for emergencies. How do you determine the exact amount? — Erin Dear Erin, The exact you amount you have in your emergency fund—whether it’s three, four, five, or six months of expenses—is really more about peace of mind than anything else. Still, there are a few practical things to consider. If you both have very stable jobs, you’d probably be okay saving three or four months of expenses. But if one of you is self-employed, makes most of their money through commissions, or only one of you works outside the home, it would make more sense to have five or six months of expenses set aside. Of course, you can always compromise while leaving room for growth. There’s nothing wrong starting out with three months of expenses saved, then adding more as time goes by. The main thing is that you’re both in agreement, and you both feel safe with the amount of money in your emergency fund! — Dave Ramsey

Dear Dave, I’m new to investing, and recently I began putting money into growth stock mutual funds inside a Roth IRA. On my last statement, it said that my investment had grown. Can you explain how it grew? — Matt Dear Matt, In most cases, you’ll have anywhere from 90 to 200 different company’s stocks in a growth stock mutual fund. Over a period of time, some of them will go up and some will go down. If the overall effect is that the group is worth more now than it was before, you made money. The value of that overall group of stocks went up, in other words. Okay, now pay close attention to what I’m about to say next. I love the fact that you’re investing and thinking about the future. It shows wisdom and maturity to be able to grasp the need for a good financial plan now and in the years ahead. However, I’d advise you to not put any more money into that investment until you understand exactly what it is and how it works. Talk to your financial advisor immediately, and let him or her know you’re not clear on things. A quality investing professional has the heart of a teacher. Someone like this will take as much time as necessary to better explain your investment, your options, and answer other questions so you can become an informed investor and, over time, make your own wise investing decisions. Never put money into something you don’t fully understand! — Dave Ramsey

Nice Things In my hometown of Mobile, Ala. there are “mini libraries” scattered around town. I suppose they have been around for a while, but it wasn’t until about a year ago that I noticed one. I had been showing a home in the Brookwood subdivision to clients of mine. On my way out of the neighborhood I saw what looked like a giant bird house, and since I have in interest in bird houses, it hit my radar. I was so intrigued by this thing that I stopped my truck and got out for a closer look. I even took a picture. Somebody had gone to a lot of effort to make that happen. I remember thinking, what a “nice thing”. A few months later I noticed another “mini library” in Springhill, and so it went from there. Now I can’t not see them. Once our mind is programmed for something, we can’t not notice that “thing” when it crosses our radar. Even if we aren’t looking for it, good or bad, we’ll see it. So, the other day I saw yet another mini library, but it was different from the rest. It was different because it had been damaged for no apparent reason, other than it was a “nice thing” someone had offered this world, that someone else had chosen to destroy. Looking at it a saying I heard long ago came to mind that we have all probably heard before…. “This is why we can’t have nice things”. Reality is that we all have something, some “nice thing”, to offer. My belief is that we are all sent here by our Creator with a “gift” to deliver this world. Further, I believe that the key to living our most abundant life while we are here is to identify this gift, this “nice thing”, and then get busy delivering it. Seems simple enough, problem is, when we choose to share this gift, this “nice thing”, that we have been sent to provide, there will come a point when opposition rises against it. Someone, or something, will try and destroy it, diminish

it, laugh at it, maybe laugh at you, make you feel inadequate, make you question if it is even worth it. It is just going to happen. My advice to you when it does? Keep doing it! Don’t shrink back, fight back. Don’t take your ball, your gift, your “nice thing” and go home. Stay and play. In spite of the opposition that will invariably show up, there are people who not only want but more importantly need this “nice thing” that you have been sent to offer. Not that you have to offer, but that you have been sent to offer. It’s why you are here. So, deliver it, and in spite of the opposition that will rise against you, keep delivering it! As for the opposition that rose against that “nice thing”. It has inspired a friend of mine named Mason to repair it, it has inspired me to build another one, and it inspired a story that can be shared. The writer downer is that “we can have nice things”. All it requires is the conviction and the courage to share “the gift” that is already within each of us, in spite of what will come against us. Get In The Boat. Do your Part. — Shane Hale Hale is a “redeemed & re-purposed professional baseball player” working as a Realtor with Bellator Real Estate & Development. Change Your Filter

Get ready for fall with fresh filters around your house. Change your central heat and air unit’s filter and write the date on the new filter. By doing this on the first day of each month, you’ll make a habit of changing this filter regularly. Now’s a good time to also check the filter on your stove or cooktop range hood, as well as your refrigerator’s icemaker water filter. Put the date on these filters, too. Plan on changing the hood filter every six months and the water filter every three months. Setting reminders on your phone will keep your filter changes on a regular schedule.

Decorate with Acorns

Gather acorns from beneath any nearby oak trees (with permission, of course – federal, state and some other lands may not allow this). Rinse under running water, then allow to thoroughly dry. Use craft paints to paint the acorns different colors while leaving the caps natural – metallic paints will give them some extra sparkle. Fill clear jars or dishes with the colorful acorns as pretty fall decorations to place around your home inside and as patio/porch décor. (Make sure these are out of the reach of little ones’ hands and mouths, as well as pets.)

DIY Fall Vase

Slice off the top of a mini pumpkin and scoop out the insides. Cut off the bottom two inches or so of a 20-ounce plastic bottle and use this as a liner for your pumpkin vase. Fill the liner three-quarters full with water and add fall flowers for a beautiful table decoration. For a larger table, group several pumpkin vases together.

Deliciously Easy Spinach Dip

Served with baby carrots, celery sticks, other veggies or pita chips, regular chips, or bread, this is a simple and tasty treat. You’ll need: (1) a 10-oz. package of frozen chopped spinach; (2) 1 cup of mayonnaise; (3) 2 cups of sour cream; (4) 1 package of dry vegetable soup mix; and (5) 3 chopped green onions. Thaw the spinach; squeeze out excess water. Chop the green onions and mix into the spinach. Blend together the mayo and sour cream. Add the dry soup and mix thoroughly before stirring in the spinach and onions. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Lucy’s Blueberry Cobbler Ingredients:

4 cup fresh blueberries 1 cup sugar 1 cup flour 2 tablespoon Fresh lemon juice 1 whole egg ¼ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon cinnamon 4 tablespoon melted butter

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease an 8 x 8 baking dish. Place blueberries in baking dish and cover with lemon juice, tossing lightly so that all berries are covered. In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, egg, salt, and cinnamon. The mixture will be coarse with little lumps. Sprinkle mixture evenly over the berries. Drizzle melted butter over the top. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until lightly browned. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

Closing thoughts. We spend an awful lot of time trying to

impress other people, don’t we? But look what the word of God has to say: “Don’t worry about making a good impression” (Colossians 3:12b, Living Bible). No matter who we “catch up with” socially or financially, there will always be someone else ahead of us. And even if we achieved every success in these areas, this fulfillment would be a hollow victory at best. As children of the Living God, we are to seek God above all else. We are to spend our time telling others about Him, living out a Christ-like lifestyle before them, and, like Jesus, “regard one another as more important than” ourselves (Philippians 2:3b, NASB). — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? The Miracle Met Cleon Jones

“I’m proud to say that I’m a New York Met” is not a phrase you often hear on the Gulf Coast but we are proud to have a Miracle Met among us. Mr. Cleon Jones and his lovely wife Angela are part of the history and the foundation of our community. After an exciting career with the Mets, they moved their family back to Plateau. Mr. Cleon Jones is a rare and remarkable figure in the history of baseball and of Mobile, Ala. He is a native Alabamian that once called New York home while playing for the 1969 World Series winning New York Mets. Cleon Jones was born on August 4, 1942 in the Plateau community, also known as Africatown, only 3 miles north of downtown Mobile. Cleon grew up to be a star baseball and football athlete at Mobile Country Training School. Combined with his ambidextrous capacity, his passion and drive led him to play football for Alabama A&M University. In the early 1960s, Mr. Jones signed with the New York Mets professional baseball team as a free agent while he was still playing for Alabama A&M. For several years thereafter, the team struggled with frequent losses and lackluster performances. A reputation for their unremarkable capacity loomed over the Mets. It wasn’t until 1967 when the Mets came under new management and took on a batch of new talent (one of which was Mr. Jones’ high school classmate, Tommie Agee) that the Mets embarked on a winning streak. They were steadily rising out of the ashes of Major League Baseball.

As much of a dream as it would be for a high school football player to play in the Super Bowl, so it goes for baseball athletes to play in the World Series. The World Series is the annual championship series of utmost importance in Major League Baseball, and the Mets’ lineup was garnering victories with their eyes set on the BIG prize. What is widely considered to be the highlight of Mr. Jones career happened in the 1969 World Series. For much of the 1960s, the Mets hat garnered a reputation for their frequent losses, suffering a record 120 defeats in their debut year of 1962. In their first six years they lost an average of 108 games. So to think that such a team would eventually come together to make baseball history less than a decade later was a crazy idea yet that is exactly what happened. The New York Mets ended the season in first place with 100 wins and 62 losses after miraculously defeating the Baltimore Orioles. The series was won when Met’s left fielder Cleon Jones caught Dave Johnson’ flyball to record the final out of the 1969 World Series where the New York Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 3 in Game Five, taking the series 4 to 1 and earning this team the name “Miracle Mets.”

Hometown Hero

always played an integral part of Africatown’s history. When, in 1860, the last documented slave ship Clotilda arrived in Mobile, the slave trade had been outlawed for over 50 years. The ship’s captain set the ship ablaze to conceal evidence of illegal human cargo, as the West African captives were ferried ashore. Eventually, after the Civil War, many of Clotilda’s survivors banded together with dozens of other emancipated Africans. Unable to return to their homeland, they pooled together what resources they had and worked tirelessly to develop a plot of land and establish their own community. A community of shared history and customs, where their language and traditions could continue to live on. A community that became known as Africatown. With the recent discovery of what are believed to be the remains of the Clotilda near Africatown, renewed interest and national attention is back on this community. Although the Clotilda’s remnants have been left under guard in the Mobile River, the Alabama Historical Commission deemed the findings an “irreplaceable cultural treasure.” But, what about intangible cultural heritage? Let’s not forget the fact that Africatown was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. According to the NRHP, it accounts for the

Growing up in Africatown forged fond memories of neighborly fellowship for Mr. Jones. Cleon didn’t own a baseball glove until he was a teenager, but he remembers how community members would come together, work together, and support each other in many ways. It was with the help of his neighbors and community that he was able to develop into such a talented athlete. As a matter of fact, this community support has

Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Read that again: worthy of preservation. This, sadly, has not necessarily been the case for Africatown. What was once a thriving community is now in a state of blight. Cleon Jones understands this perfectly well. He understands that despite the bleak state of affairs, its cultural and economic potential can be revived. Although the community has experienced a dwindling population, blighted neighborhoods, vanishing commerce and economic resources– it is still worthy of preservation. That’s why he and his wife moved back to Africatown from New York to raise their family in the community they so love. Mr. Jones and local residents regularly come together to carry out duties that breathe new life into Africatown. Their projects range from clearing properties of litter, developing community gardens, securing funds from local government, refurbishing and repairing homes… it’s what the Jones’ do. Mr. Cleon Jones will always be a “Miracle Met”. He and his family are the true embodiment of the team’s moniker. He makes miracles happen in his community every day. Now, with the support of the New York Mets, the Cleon Jones Last Out Community Foundation are on a mission to make a bigger impact on this community as the Mobile

waterfront grows land expands. The first step in this journey is the The Cleon Jones Charity Golf Tournament & Gala. It is through this initiative that this community can be revitalized. It is a way to honor the legacy of the town’s founders; to bring back a sense of hope and opportunity; to promote an appreciation of the community’s heritage and pride. The mission is to see Africatown prosper for future generations and with the support of the Mobile community at-large, we can achieve this together.

Charity Golf Tournament & Gala

The Cleon Jones Charity Golf Tournament & Gala will be taking place on October 15 and 16 at the Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala. Sponsors, golfers, and guests can look forward to celebrating with some of the reunited players of the 1969 New York Mets World Series team on their 50th Anniversary. Golfers are invited to attend the pre-event Gala on October 15, 2019 at 6 p.m. There will be a dinner banquet, silent auction, and a meet-and-greet session with several team players of the 1969 Miracle Mets. Look forward to musical entertainment from The Tip Tops during the pre-event. Event Sponsors have a special invitation to attend the Pre-Gala cocktail hour at 5 p.m.

It’s an honor to share this opportunity with the residents of Mobile and surrounding areas. Banding together in the name of community revitalization would most certainly be a vision come true for Mr. Cleon Jones and his family. For someone who has been inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame as well as the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Mr. Jones remains as humble and driven as ever. It’s an undying wish to simply give back to the community that gave him so much… a community that prompted him to thrive and make it as far as New York as a professional baseball player. How can this not be a deep source of pride? How can one not want to revive a place of such heritage and cultural significance? It’s this love and appreciation that brought back Mr. and Mrs. Jones and kept them here, even as he continues to call himself a lifelong New York Met. — Cynthia Corral If you would like more information about event tickets and sponsorship opportunities, please contact e-worc web & new media at (251) 414-3130 or visit the website at www.lastoutcommunityfoundation.org

Brain Diets in Action

The first step in getting the cognitive decline stopped and leveled out in Ann’s mother, who was living with her, was 1. hire home health care to help with activities of daily living and activities in her Alzheimer’s reversal protocol plan and 2. subscribe to delivery of fresh Keto meals and snacks. Bob’s cognitive impairment was slight, he had difficulty concentrating and completing sentences. He also had Lupus, bad skin rashes, was way over weight and had severe arthralgias (joint pain). A keto diet was definitely not for him. After a few weeks of cleaning up his diet with full elimination of two particular foods along with healing his gut, his ‘head brain’ issues snapped into shape and his joint swelling and pain subsided. After 9 months, the weight dropped off, his lupus went into remission and his skin became clear. Everyone’s beginning dementia is different based on their DNA, their lifestyle and the foods they eat, specifically what they eat now combined with what they have historically eaten. According to Dr. Dale Bredesen, developing an individual’s Alzheimer’s/dementia Reversal Protocol begins with what they eat. Dr. Dale Bredesen was the first MD research scientist to scientifically reverse 109 of 110 patients/participants under clinical trials suffering cognitive impairment in ‘beginning to middle’ Alzheimer’s. From his training, I follow his direction. After learning what participants in the Alzheimer’s/dementia reversal program eat, I suggest making small changes inroad to getting their gut in gear as well as making lifestyle changes.

And making these changes for most is huge, even significantly life altering. But that is what we want, correct? A definite change in our cognitive behavior, a return to ‘normal’ thinking. Our brain function has changed for the worse, now we must change it back to the better. And that change does not happen out of the gate. A colt is not going to win the Kentucky Derby without winning a few preliminary races. So getting the gut in gear for cognitive impairment, it’s a slow steady process. It is very doable and the key to success without sacrificing any gastronomic desires is to make 1. smart choices and 2. easy substitutions. Taste buds change, you begin to feel the difference. Pretty soon the good food choices start to crowd out the bad where there is no question of what to eat. No cookies after every meal? No nightly ice cream before bed? No cream in my coffee? Yes, this first step, making the small dietary changes, is the hardest. Here’s where I suggest people start. I’ve put it together in an easy to consume (get it?) Gut in Gear guide with 5 easy food swaps to better health – even before you take on the diet. Get the guide on my website, www.JanetRichPittman.com/gut-in-gear — Janet Rich Pittman Brain Health Specialist, Former Dementia Administrator and Practitioner, www.JanetRichPittman.com, Janet@JanetRichPittman.com Want more suggestions for everyday substitutions? ALFALFA/Father of all Foods

Long before people knew about Chondroitin, MSM and Glucosamine, I was teaching my patients about the overall health benefits of Alfalfa and using it daily for all my arthritis patients. Alfalfa is loaded in vitamins, minerals and proteins, alfalfa’s many nutrients make it one of the most nutritious foods known earning it the name Father of all Foods. Alfalfa’s Root System For more than 15 centuries, people have used alfalfa as a form of herbal medication. This nutritious plant, ‘’Medicago sativa’’, has a unique root system that makes it very different from most other plants. The tap roots of the alfalfa plant grow deep under the soil approximately six to ten feet a year. It is common to have alfalfa crops for five to six years before rotation, allowing the root systems to grow up to thirty feet and more, with an average length of ten to twenty feet. The roots of the alfalfa plants reach deep into the subsoil reaching minerals most other plant roots are unable to reach. The benefits of alfalfa’s deep root system include: • Access to moisture in the deep soil not available to other plants. • Access to very rich minerals found deep underground. • Formation of an association, or bond, with soil bacteria that biologically fixes and assimilates inert nitrogen into nitrogen that is useful to various plants. Creation of nutrient rich plant growth. Alfalfa Nutrients Alfalfa contains all of the nutrients needed by the human body. These include: • Vitamins • Phytoestrogens • Coumarin • Minerals • Saponims • Acids • Trace elements • Sterols • Proteins • Amino acids • Alkoloids • Sugars • Digestive enzymes • Flavonoids • Fiber Vitamins, Minerals and Trace Elements Alfalfa is rich in several vitamins, minerals, and trace elements too. The chart Vitamins Minerals Trace Elements

Proteins and Calcium As a single source alfalfa has one of the highest levels of protein. It contains more protein then milk, eggs or beef when measured by equal weight. The protein content of alfalfa is 18.9 percent compared to that of beef at 16.5 percent, eggs at 13.1 percent and milk at 3.3 percent. The leaves of the alfalfa plant are also very rich in calcium. When measured by equal weight, alfalfa has higher levels of calcium then milk or eggs. If alfalfa leaves are burned, the remaining ashes consist of 99% calcium. An essential nutrient, each cell in the human body needs calcium to remain strong and healthy; it’s the 5th most abundant nutrient in the body. Alfalfa Facts Of the twenty known essential amino acids, eight are found in alfalfa. Amino acids are referred to as the building blocks of proteins and needed by everyone. Alfalfa is available in many forms. As a whole food, the seeds and sprouts are both nutritious and delicious eaten or made into a juice which is my favorite. Taken as a supplement 2-3 x daily, alfalfa is available in pill, capsule or powdered form. Alfalfa tea is a delicious beverage made with dried or fresh alfalfa leaves. The tea acts as a diuretic, promotes appetite, gives an increased feeling of vitality and is great for the red blood cells. So remember your alfalfa on a daily basis, it’s worth it ! How Happiness Happens We live in the most affluent era of human history. We are surrounded by schools, medical centers and churches – each tasked with enhancing our mind, body and soul. And yet we are an unhappy folk. Even people of faith seem prone to live in discouragement. With the advent of social media, perpetual outrage and anger are commonplace, often over the most insane assertions or trivial issues. We cannot even buy a sandwich without walking into the crossfire of a culture war. So how do we find the happiness that all humans desire? Max Lucado has some solid advice in his new book, How Happiness Happens. The New Testament uses the term “one another” over fifty times. How we engage one another is the key to abundant life and joy. If we focus on ourselves, our possessions or our self-interest, then we will live a miserable life. If we focus our attention on one another, on the well-being of both loved ones and strangers, then we are living as God intended us to. Happiness is found not in acquiring but in giving. Those who wish to live the Christian life must accept one another, bear one another’s burdens, serve one another, forgive one another and love one another. This is the key to happiness. I am persuaded that happiness in this life is found by aligning ourselves with the ideals of Christ’s kingdom. There is no “abundant life” outside of Jesus and the measure of that abundance is found in the depths of In addition to authoring more than twen- our love for God and for one ty books, Max Lucado is the pastor of another. Embrace the stranger, Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. heal the hurting, meet the needs of those less fortunate, exhibit compassion and extend kindness to friends and foes alike – that is what how we are called to live. That is how happiness happens. — Darrel Holcombe

Steps to Recovering From Bankruptcy

It’s easier than you think First things first: Most people who have declared bankruptcy think that their credit scores and their personal finances are ruined for the next ten years. But this is not true. Once you file bankruptcy, you will feel financial stability immediately, and you can have a great credit score — 720 or higher — within 12 to 24 months of discharge (for Chapter 7) or confirmation (for Chapter 13), provided you take the right steps. Bankruptcy is a powerful life changer. You might feel anxious and worried today, but I promise you that if you follow the advice in this book, declaring bankruptcy will be a pivot point — a time when your life changed suddenly and for the best. In this book, I explain the steps to making the most of your bankruptcy. I will show you how easy it is to repair your credit score, and I will address your other fears — like whether your friends and your employers will find out about your bankruptcy, and what to say if they do. After working with thousands of bankruptcy clients, I have identified five patterns of behavior — five easy patterns of behavior — that set apart those people who use their bankruptcy as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf and start anew. To recover from bankruptcy fast, here are five steps you must take: 1. Face your fears. 2. Start immediately. 3. Open new lines of credit without accruing debt (yes, you’ll learn the strategy for this). 4. Be intentional. 5. Communicate clearly, directly, and honestly.

FACE YOUR FEARS: It just sounds bad — even dirty. It’s embarrass-

ing. (What if people find out?!) People paint ugly pictures of what their lives will look like post-bankruptcy. But it’s just not true. Bankruptcy is an oppor-

tunity to close one chapter of your life and open a new chapter — a better chapter. In this new chapter of your life, you get to make choices without the constant pressure of creditors breathing down your back. Your days will feel easier, your responsibilities more manageable, and your choices more abundant. To make the most of this new chapter, though, you have to face your fears. What I mean by “facing your fears” is this: Instead of worrying about how your bankruptcy will impact your life, make a plan so that you are in control. Intentionally set a course of action to make sure that your bankruptcy does not negatively impact your life.

START IMMEDIATELY: Most people with bad credit think that time will heal their wounds. They declare bankruptcy, and then bide their time, thinking that once the bankruptcy falls off their credit report in ten years, their finances and their credit score will magically improve. But this is not the way it works. To have a high credit score, which is 720 or above, you need to have and use credit. 2. Credit scoring bureaus place more emphasis on recent behavior than on past behavior. This means that while a bankruptcy will hurt your score initially, its impact on your credit score will gradually start to fade as time passes. If you begin to use credit responsibly, the bankruptcy will drop into the background as your new-and improved behavior emerges and takes center stage.

NEW LINES OF CREDIT: You should have an installment line

that is reported to the credit bureaus. It might sound strange that after you file for bankruptcy, your bankruptcy attorney tells you to open new lines of credit. Keep this in mind: I am encouraging you to establish new credit, but not new debt.

INTENTIONALITY: If you have a problem, and you bury your head

in the sand, the problem will only worsen. You already know that when you are late on a payment and do not return collectors’ phone calls, the calls only intensify. If, on the other hand, you are intentional about your behavior, the problem will be significantly more manageable.

COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY AND HONESTLY: Many,

many people declare bankruptcy. It is a normal thing to do. Depending on the size of your company, your employer has probably already dealt with wage garnishments and bankruptcies. You are probably not the only person in your office who has declared bankruptcy, nor will you be the last. Signs/Symptoms & How Parents Can Help Now that school is back in session, it is time to talk about peer pressure and bullying. When discussing this topic with my 7th grader named Jarrett, he came up with some excellent advice. Below are few warning signs that Jarrett and I put together to help parents recognize if their child is being bullied and suggestions for how parents/ grandparents can help.

Warning Signs/Symptoms: • • • • • • • • • •

Complains about going to school Talks about kids being mean (either in general or mean toward them) Easily irritated at home Drop in grades and social interactions Depression – feeling sad, low energy, isolates Talks about being transferred to another school Displays increased aggression Experiencing night terrors and/or bed wetting Gets offended easily by jokes Looks angry, sad, or worried when going to school or when leaving school

Tips for Helping Your Child:

• Resist the urge to rescue your child or fix the situation for them. • Monitor you child’s social media and discuss any signs of bullying behavior. • Listen and allow your child to discuss their experience with you. • Empower them by using this as an opportunity to teach conflict resolution skills. • Give personally examples of how you have successfully dealt with bullies in your past or present. • Encourage your child to tell the counselor, principle, or trusted teacher. • Help her/him recognize the strategies they used to successfully defuse the bullying behavior. • Praise your child’s efforts for resolving their own conflict successfully.

P l an

S alvation

PARENTS:

Whatever you do, try your best to control your emotions. “Momma Bear” and “Papa Bear” responses can make the situation worse for your child. Just remember, your verbal, emotional, and physical responses will have a significant impact on how your child copes with this current conflict and her/his future conflicts. Here are a few added tips for parents if the bullying behavior becomes to sever for your child to handle themselves: • Discuss the conflict with your student’s teacher and how the behavior has escalated. • Ask the teacher for suggestions on how your student can help resolve the conflict. • Schedule a teacher/parent conference to also include the parents of the student that is exhibiting the bullying behavior. • Place all communications to the teacher in writing and send a carbon copy to the school’s counselor and the principle. Make sure to follow-up in the same manner to acknowledge that the conflict has been resolved and thank them for their assistance. — Veronica Davis Veronica Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addictions Therapist. Has something in the magazine or something you have discussed with someone or some thoughts that you have had or something that you have heard, brought you to a point of realizing that you want and need to know Christ in the truest and personal sense?

If so, below is a simple outline for someone of any age who is not a Believer to act on their desire to accept Jesus Christ into their heart as their Savior. God’s Plan of Salvation God created us to honor and serve Him Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist[b] and were created Each of us has sinned against God Romans 3:10: As it is written, “There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sin Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We each must accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior Romans 10:9: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:13: For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God and Heaven Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Good works cannot ever earn God’s forgiveness and Salvation Titus 3:5: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. God loves each of us John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

To accept Christ into your heart and life, pray a simple prayer along these lines - “Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sins. I know that Jesus died for my sins and the sins of the world. Right now, I ask Jesus into my heart and receive Him as my personal Savior. Forgive me of my sins, thank you for saving me through the blood of Jesus. Please Lord, help me live for you. In Jesus name, amen.” All scriptures are taken from The New King James Version of the Holy Bible.
