Love One Another February is a month filled with love. The exchanging of

sentimental heart-felt cards, chocolates and flowers are a sure sign that you are in love with that special someone. Valentine’s Day is a day when so many place an emphasis on love. Does God choose certain times of the year to love us? God loves each of us daily and unconditionally. The word “love” appears 314 times in the King James Version, 551 in the New International Version, 348 in the New American Standard Version and 538 in the New Revised Standard Version. Love is scattered throughout the Bible in many wonderful chapters. As Christians, we are to love one another as God loves us. One particular verse that many learn as children is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Deuteronomy 6:5 states “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” These words need to be practiced daily in our walk with God. Love is such a small word on paper, yet it is said on a continuous basis in conversations with our spouse, children, extended family and friends. If you listen to God during your devotion time, you will feel His embracing love all around you. Throughout 2018, take notice of the number of times you reference the word love and let God know that you love Him as much as He loves you. John 15:12 states “My command is this; Love each other as I have loved you.” This particular verse is crystal clear in its meaning. We are to love one another as God loves us. I hope you find this issue to be inspiring, and I encourage you to read every article, support the many faith-based advertisers and pass your copy on to a friend or family member so that they too will enjoy something positive.

Circulation & Distribution: 10,000 copies of Bay Area Christian Family are printed each month. Bay Area Christian Family is free and available at targeted high traffic locations in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Copies are also available by mail, $25 for one year.

Fixing “Weary” Will Help You De-Clutter Your Life February can be challenging month—physically, mentally, and emotionally with winter still in force in many areas of the country. I recently read a book that might help make a “better” me—a more healthy and joyous me, anyway. Wouldn’t that be a clutter-clearing gift for me and for the people around me? Please consider this as a Valentine’s Day gift for yourself. I would like to invite you to come along with me. Less fatigue and better health physically, mentally, and emotionally would simplify your life. Right? Now, I don’t lose weight as easily as I used to. Can you relate? That is no news flash and part of it may just come with the aging process and slowing metabolism. I don’t know. Still, I can choose what I eat and I can choose how often I move my body. I can get back into the driver’s seat. My faith, my spirituality, tells me that my body is a temple. To be honest, I have rebelled like a little kid who doesn’t want to do her homework. I know there are many benefits to exercise, and I always, always feel better about life and everything else right after I exercise. Why am I so foolish sometimes? I don’t know. Still, I can and will gradually and gently increase my exercise again. Battle worn, care worn, weary but grateful to be here. That is me. Is that you? To get inspired, I recently read Goddesses Never Age by Christiane Northrup, M.D. Frankly, I am inspired by her thoughts. I cannot say enough good things about this book for those of us, especially women, who are in our midlife and beyond. If you are pondering what you want middle age and beyond to be for yourself, I can’t recommend this book highly enough for you. Here are just a couple of thoughts from the book that really resonate for me: Diet: Northrup suggests that in regard to healthy eating there are “moderators” and “abstainers.” Moderators can enjoy a little of something. Abstainers will go on to eat most of the bag. Moderators are good at eating a little bit of a treat. Personally, I am an abstainer with no self-control once I start, so I decided to follow her advice to eat what I want one day per week and be “good” on the other days. Northrup didn’t shame either eating style—she has a lot of good thoughts about shame, actually. Pointing out how to manage my eating based on my personal hardwired eating style made sense to me. Exercise: A word many of us don’t like. Northrup comments that willpower to keep going with the task of exercise doesn’t last for many of us. Eventually we run low on willpower. Even the word “exercise” brings up negative connotations. Northrup suggests calling it “joyful movement” instead, and encourages us to figure out what kind of movement is personally joyful. Something clicked for me when I was thinking about this approach. I discovered that when I listen to a series of fast-paced tunes of a genre I like, I actually enjoy doing a weird combo of freestyle movement ranging from “exercise” moves like jogging, marching, kicking, and knee lifts to “dance” moves that are silly but fun and arm movements that feel good at the time. I am not ready to be publicly seen doing my joyful movement but I work up a sweat and get up to around 10,000 steps completed in relatively little time in the simplicity and privacy of my home. In fact, because it is my version of joyful movement, the time seems to pass pretty quickly. Northrup shares many other beyond-midlife things in her book. The thoughts in Goddesses Never Age have helped me clarify and simplify my life and helped me to reduce my weariness. I hope you find her ideas helpful too! — Barbara Tako Barbara is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. New $1.1 Million Grant to Help Support Samford’s Center for Worship and the Arts Samford University has received an additional $1.1 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to further the work of the Center for Worship and the Arts. Housed in Samford’s School of the Arts, the center is advancing the conversation about teenage worshippers and teenage worship leaders. The founding director of the Center for Worship and the Arts, Eric Mathis arrived at Samford in 2010. He holds a bachelor of music from Wheaton College, a master of music and master of divinity from Baylor University and George W. Truett Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. “We are grateful to Lilly Endowment for its support of our work and our mission as we equip congregations to build bridges between student ministry and worship ministry,” Mathis said. “Through programs, research, and scholarship, we are creating a national platform for conversations about the relationship

between youth ministry and worship ministry, and we believe this conversation is important for the church and the work of God in the world.” Founded as anima in 2013 with the help of a grant from the Christ Is Our Salvation (C.I.O.S.) Foundation, the program recently revised its name to the Center for Worship and the Arts. Animate, its flagship summer worship leadership program retains its current identity. The center is celebrating its fifth anniversary and launching several new initiatives thanks to the additional grant, Mathis said.

Animate is one of the programs at Samford University’s Center for Worship and the Arts. The five-day worship leadership program is for teens and their adult mentors. Animate 2018 is June 25-29, register at www.samford.edu/go/animate

8 Bay Area Christian Family

New program highlights are a Worship Leader Boot Camp for teenagers, allowing youth ministers and worship leaders to jump start their fall programming with teenage youth worship leaders; Student Worship Cohorts which

will develop a deeper relationship with congregations participating in Animate; Student Worship Innovators which will engage church leaders in creating new resources for student worship; and new writing projects, including a book by Mathis under contract with Baker Academic Publishing. The center continues to provide online resources, an online certificate program with expanded goals and its summer program, Animate. Other center team members include Tracy Hanrahan, Program Director; Kara Young, Coordinator of Promotion and Engagement; and three Faculty Fellows: Emily Andrews, Instructor of Church Music and Worship Leadership; Joe Cory, Associate Professor of Art; and Chuck Stokes, Associate Professor of Sociology. GREER’S PARTNERSHIP IN EDUCATION For over 100 years, the Greer Family has invested in the communities it serves by employing local residents and supporting local activities through donations, sponsorships, and fundraisers. Greer’s Apples for the Students Program has been at the core of Greer’s community involvement activities. The well-being of all customers and associates and their families is an important part of Greer’s Team Vision, “To bring added joy, well-being, and value to people’s lives!” This is Greer’s 9th year to participate in the Presidential Award-Winning Program – Apples for the Students. The Greer Family feels the Apples Program enables them to not only bring “joy” to the students and teachers receiving awards, but to put the “well-being and value” portions of their vision into action in each and every community they serve. Apples for the Students has worked with grocery stores to provide more than $250 million dollars of FREE computers, equipment, programs, and educational tools to local schools. The Greer Family and our family of Associates are all proud to be a part of the Apples for the Students program through Del Prince Marketing & Associated Wholesale Grocers. Providing FREE educational equipment and supplies to participating schools in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida through the Apples for the Students Program is an important part of giving back to local community schools. The Program is open to all schools public, private, parochial, pre-school and day care centers. Unlike traditional fund-raisers, Apples for the Students is easy and fun! Since many reading this article likely shop at Greer’s, your child’s school may already have a strong base of support for this program. Best of all, everyone in the local community can take part. It’s not limited to a school’s students, administration and faculty. In fact, the more outside interest and enthusiasm generated by parents and all, the greater the benefits for participating schools. The Greer Family knows of no better way to serve the community than by enhancing the educational and developmental environment of our children.

112 schools in local communities Greer’s serves participated in last year’s Program and collected 6,390,111 points in receipt totals! Each school placed its order from the Apples for Students online catalog of thousands of items! And, Greer’s donated over $60,000 for these school supplies and equipment. The Power in Living Out Your God Given Purpose Mother Teresa was a woman of tremendous power, and not one ounce of that power came from her position. It was all about her character and personality. In 1984, Mother Teresa‘s order of nuns, the Missionaries of Charity, went to a convent in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Their goal was to build a soup kitchen and a shelter Shishu Bhavan, one of the houses established to serve the homeless in the area. by Mother Teresa and run by the Missionaries The locals weren’t too sure about of Charity in Kolkata, India. that plan. They wanted the homeless out of their neighborhood; they didn’t want to invite them in with free food and shelter! Technically speaking, the neighbors did have a legal leg to stand on because the neighborhood where the nuns wanted to build the shelter was zoned for single family housing and office space. While the fight was ongoing, Mother Teresa came to town to visit the nuns in this, the newest outpost of the Missionaries of Charity. She attended mass one Sunday morning, and afterwards she asked to meet with the borough council members and business owners who opposed the shelter. They agreed to the meeting. Once everyone was in the room, Mother Teresa opened in prayer and proceeded to talk to them about the shelter. She spoke softly, barely above a whisper, according to one of the men who was there. By the time the meeting was over, every person in the room had given up their opposition to the project. Their various official positions were no match for the power and authority that she brought to the table. If you could teach your child one thing, I would suggest you teach them the power of living a life fulfilling your God-given purpose. The best way to teach that is to live it! — John Croyle Founder, Big Oak Ranch, Author, Who You Are/Defying the Circumstances that Define Us, Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child, The Two Minute Drill to Manhood and Raising a Princess, www.bigoak.org

Mix the cake mix, egg whites, vegetable oil, water, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract together in a large bowl using a hand mixer. Mix for a few minutes until combined. Line 24 count muffin tin with baking cups. Divide the batter evenly among the baking cups. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven. Cool. Raised in Kingsport, Tenn., Peyton says traveling to baptize their daughter in the same church she was baptized in was a significant step in maintaining faith traditions important to her family. Born in November 2016, Layla James Lambton became the sixth generation from Peyton’s family to be baptized at the family’s church. “My father served as an elder in the church, so he was able to be a part of the ceremony,” Peyton remembers. “The biggest reason I wanted to do that was because family is so important to us, teaching Layla this is what we have.” For the Lambtons, the significance of Layla’s baptism also represents a lesson in patience and seeking God for guidance while pursuing parenthood. Conceived via in vitro fertilization, Layla’s birth

When considering flowers and shrubs for 2018, Chris says, research what’s native because it will cut down on your water and landscaping costs. Also, for the biggest impact for the money, a stone patio will require little upkeep after the initial investment. “The great thing about stones are they are not going to rot out; they are going to last forever, and if they are laid correctly, it’s something you can use for decades and decades to come,” explains Chris. “It gives you that entertainment space where you can put chairs, a little table for a dining area… a place for people to congregate, and it cuts down on the amount of grass that you have to mow, which is always a bonus.”

followed what Peyton calls “a long long long hard battle and a lot of soul searching” on how to create a family when it doesn’t happen naturally. “Trusting God is a huge part of it because it’s such a frustrating process,” she remembers. “It was so long, and I’m very much a person of instant gratification. It was probably two years of going to the doctor and blood tests and injections and all of these things that you did not imagine when you set out to start a family. There was a lot of resentment. There was a lot of anger. But then I just had to put my trust in God that He had a plan, and He did. His plan was for Layla, and no matter how we ended up with the family that we have, that was His plan all along,” she says, adding, “I just have to trust that in the future when we want to have future children. If that is in the cards, then we will just have to trust and have faith.”

The Fun is in the Filming. Still working daily in his family landscaping business, Chris says one of the most memorable parts of filming for HGTV and DIY Network landscaping shows is the people he meets along the way. Filmed in Philadelphia and Orlando, ”Lawn & Order” focuses on finding homeowners who lack the inspiration, the money or the skill to raise their home’s value by boosting curb appeal. “We get to go in there as a team and completely tear out the yard and make the client work a little bit so they get the sweat equity,” Chris says. “It gives them more of an ownership so they’ll take care of it when we leave.”

Now an interior designer in Cape Code, Peyton says when it comes to filming for Chris’ newest shows, she leaves most decisions up to him. “He’s so good at what he does that we try to stay in our own lanes. I’ll come in and help with some finishing stuff if there’s furniture involved, as far as what style, what fabrics, finishing accessories. But when it comes to the basic landscaping, the layout and design, that’s all him.” Meet the Lambtons. In Birmingham this month, Chris and Peyton will share photos and stories from some of their most memorable projects and give helpful tips for committing to the first step in making your outdoor dreams a reality. “We try to give people ideas to get outside, to take that first step, and to renovate their yard into a great space where they can entertain. The great thing about a home show is that I can give some ideas and walk around and find people to help implement those ideas right there. It’s kind of like a one stop shop.” The Lambtons will appear at the BJCC Birmingham Home Show at 6 p.m. on February 16 and again at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on February 17. Sitting As A New Way to Prevent Alzheimer’s According to fifteen studies from the Alzheimer’s Association, consistent aerobic exercise is the main form of prevention for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. And yet, no matter how many times I preach about the benefits of exercise for your brain health, not one of my clients subscribes to aerobically exercising the full 6 days a week. Over and over, we’ve read about the other benefits from exercising such as boost immune system, lower blood pressure, improve mood, decrease risk of depression, and reduce anxiety. What invigorates me is that aerobic exercise creates new brain cells. And when we are constantly fighting for their survival, this is a not only a way to strengthen them but is a sure means of healthy regeneration of new brain cells. All in all, you know the benefits, and yet, you and I both know that knowing the benefits doesn’t get most of our butts to the gym one day a week, let alone six. Well, there may be good news, couch potatoes. When it comes to your brain health, there may be a shortcut—and it doesn’t even involve sneakers. The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, completed a study which tells us we can get nearly all the benefits of consistent aerobic exercise just by sitting on our derriere for 15+ minutes a day for 5 to 6 days a week. Yes, just by sitting on our fannies 6 days a week. The catch? In a sauna. That’s right, sauna bathing, just sitting on your derriere in a sauna 15 minutes a day for 6 days a week. In the study, researchers analyzed weekly sauna bathing habits of 2,315 healthy men baseline age 42-60 over two decades. The men were divided into three groups, those who took about a 15-minute sauna 4-7 times a week, those using a sauna 2-3 times a week, and those who only used a sauna once a week. The more frequently someone used a sauna each week, the lower the risk of dementia the study showed. For example, among those who used a sauna 4-7 times a week, the risk of any form of dementia was 66 percent lower and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease 65 percent lower than among those taking a sauna just once a week. Those who used a sauna two to three times a week also lowered their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia – cutting their odds by roughly 20 percent. But they didn’t enjoy the same robust level of protection as the most frequent sauna users.

Double Credit Day: Sat., Feb. 10th

Although researchers still aren’t certain of the exact mechanisms by which saunas improve health, they report that saunas may offer neuromuscular and cardiovascular conditioning that is surprisingly similar to that resulting from aerobic exercise. According to UEF Professor Jari Laukkanen, who led the sauna research, frequent heat exposure during sauna bathing may protect both the heart and memory via similar, but still poorly understood mechanisms such as dealing with excess breathing and increasing heart rate thereby pushing more oxygen rich blood deep into the brain increasing metabolism. In a statement to UEF, he said, “The sense of well-being and relaxation experienced during sauna bathing may also play a role.” For those who cannot or will not subscribe to conducting their own aerobic exercise 6 days a week, for the rest of their lives, for the best in good brain health, specifically to prevent dementia, the next best thing seems to be consistent sauna bathing 4-7 times a week. The excuses are getting slimmer and slimmer.

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: Face Pulls The “Anti-Igor” Exercise

In our society we spend way too much time slumped over computer keyboards (as I sit here writing this article on my computer), driving cars, watching TV, and a number of other daily tasks that have us completely hunched over like Igor waiting on Doc Frankenstein to give us our next command. Truth be told, we have become a “society of slouchers”. On top of bad posture created by daily living, most people in the gym perform nothing but bench presses, ab crunches, pull downs, arm curls, etc. All of which reinforce the curled forward posture that is both unattractive as well as un-healthy. Along comes the Standing Face Pull exercise just in time to save the day. This exercise is simple, comes in many variations and best of all…this is a great “anti-slouch” movement. This exercise alone may very well help change your posture. It will also go a long way towards helping you avoid back and shoulder injuries.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Set the pulley on an adjustable cable machine somewhere between chest level and 6-12 inches above your head, and connect a rope handle attachment to the cable. 2. Facing the machine grip both ends of the rope with a pronated (overhand) grip, step back until your arms are fully extended and the weight you’ve selected lifts a few inches off the stack. 3. Bend your knees to create a stable base. You can keep feet a little wider than shoulders or use a staggered stance (one foot forward and the other slightly back), chin neutral, back straight, shoulder blades pulled down and together (scrunched together). (Photo-A) 4. Stay upright as you draw your elbows back as far as possible, keeping them slightly above shoulder height throughout the movement. The middle of the rope attachment where it connects to the cable should come toward your nose (Don’t bump your nose!). Be sure you are not only pulling the rope back, but also apart. At the end of the movement your arms should be externally rotated (hands toward ceiling). (Photo-B) 5. Lower the weight slowly, allowing the shoulder blades to abduct (un-scrunch from the middle of your back) when your arms are extended. Keep the weight low to moderate for two to three sets of 10 to 15 reps per set, focusing on perfect form throughout. NOTES: Try using a supinated grip (thumbs up). Some people find this grip more comfortable and just as effective. I personally use both. (Photo-C) Keep your elbows up during the entire movement. Avoid moving your head forward; keep it in a neutral position throughout the movement. Do not go too heavy or too fast. This is a slow controlled movement. You need to feel the muscles squeeze, pause and then lower slowly. — Jason S. Dave Says

Dear Dave, I recently got a new job that requires monthly expenses of almost $5,000 that are reimbursed. I can’t swing that kind of money right now, and my company told me to get a credit card to cover things. I’m trying to get out of debt, and I don’t like this idea. What should I do? — John Dear John, Your wife is probably not in danger, unless she signed paperwork making her lYour company should be fronting the money for these expenses. When you talk about the cost of doing business, it’s the responsibility of the company — not the employee — to pay expenses. If I send someone on the road to make money for my company, I pay the bills. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about hotel rooms, airfare, or rental cars, those are my expenses. If it’s someone who travels a lot, we give them a company debit card. If it’s just an occasional thing, we’ll give them money out of petty cash. But a company shouldn’t treat its employees this way. That’s just plain wrong.

It’s a mystery to me how some segments of Corporate America have sold their employees on the idea of being the company bank. Ultimately, the decision is yours. If you don’t mind covering your company’s expenses and getting reimbursed, but you don’t want to go into debt, you’ll have to save and build up a $5,000 business expense fund in a separate checking account. This should be used only for business expenses, and what’s spent should be replenished immediately when they reimburse you. You’re in an unusual spot, John. Personally, I think this is an unprofessional way to run a business. But if you like your job, and want to stay without taking on any more debt, the good news is you’ll only have to fill up your expense account one time. — Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My sister has bad credit due to a lot of late payments. She has finally started to change her ways and get control of her finances, because she and her fiancé want to make an offer on a house. The bank won’t approve it if she is on the loan, and his income alone isn’t enough to get the amount they need. His parents are well-off, and they have offered to co-sign on the loan. Is this a bad idea?

— Rhonda

Dear Rhonda, It’s a really bad idea. Those two have no business thinking about a house right now, and his parents are about to make things even worse with their loving, misguided help.

If you need a co-signer, you’re nowhere near ready to buy a home. They need to slow down. I mean, they’re just engaged. They don’t even need a house at this point. They should get married, live in a cheap apartment for a while, and work on paying off their debts. After that, they need to save up an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, then start setting cash aside for a huge down payment on their first, modest home. These two have a bad case of house fever. And mom and dad need to step back, look at things objectively, and realize they would not be blessing these kids by helping get them into a home they obviously can’t afford! — Dave Ramsey

Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, produced a pamphlet entitled, “4 Spiritual Laws.” It mentioned that in each of our lives there is both a throne and a cross, and they both will be occupied. Deer Season Ends… February brings the end to yet another deer season and hopefully everybody had a bountiful one! When you pick up your meat from the processor, if you run out of room in the freezer or have more meat than you can use, share your harvest. There are plenty of people right here at home that could use the meat, because they are not hunters or maybe things are just tough at the moment and the extra food would be helpful. As hunters and Christians it is important that we keep an eye out for one another, help those in need, and use every opportunity to share what God has given us. Also, consider using the next couple of weeks as a time to clean up the hunting camp and preserve the beauty God has given us. Clean out your shooting houses, take down your stands and leave no trace behind. Not only will it make returning next season that much nicer and easier, but it will also set a good example for the younger generations of hunters, teaching them how to respect the land that provides for us.

What is the Deal with Personal Injury Lawyers? It seems every time I turn on the T.V., I am bombarded with commercials for personal injury lawyers, including my own. Decades ago, attorneys were prohibited from advertising what services they offered. Those prohibitions were later lifted due to constitutional free speech protection. Various State Bar organizations then sought to set restrictions on the content of attorney advertising to try to maintain dignity and respect for the profession. Likewise, some restrictions on attorney advertising have been deemed unconstitutional restrictions on commercial free speech. As a result, attorneys now seem completely free to say whatever, regardless of the impact it might have on the profession, their clients and how injury claims are perceived overall. Although there are specific rules governing attorney advertising (Rules7.1-7.6, Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct), and lawyers are prohibited from producing advertisements that are false or misleading, some attorneys appear free to produce advertising that not only might lack in taste and decorum but also might include information which requires close examination of the fine print disclaimers within each advertisement. “The Hypothetical Law Firm of Tasteless, Cheesy

and Billboard has recovered tens of millions of dollars for its clients,” may be a good example. No two cases are identical and a settlement or judgment for one client has absolutely no bearing on what any other client may recover. How and why are lawyers then able to run such ads? The answer is in the disclaimer in the small print you might see in those commercials. Those disclaimers basically tell viewers not to rely on statements about past financial results because they likely have no relationship to any future results. “The last time I went to Court, I went hunting and bagged ten gazillion dollars for my client,” may be another hypothetical example of a potentially misleading advertisement. In some cases, judgments are obtained by default and no funds are even collected. I once represented a four-yearold who suffered brain damage from negligently administered anesthesia and other sedatives during dental treatment. I obtained an $11,000,000.00 verdict. I never advertised this. It was a default judgment where the defendant failed to appear for Court. The dentist allowed his malpractice insurance coverage to lapse. Although the Court awarded $11,000,000.00, the child’s recovery was limited to the assets of the dentist and his practice, but the dentist became the subject of a Medicare fraud investigation. There were no funds to collect whatsoever. I could advertise winning this large judgment without lying, but because not one cent was collected, that might be misleading. Lawyers

obtain sizeable verdicts by default all the time. If a lawyer is advertising he or she obtained a sizeable verdict rather than a collected recovery for their client, it is very possible the amount being boasted was never actually collected. “If you have been hurt, call me right now!” says some hypothetical lawyer on T.V. A client calls and asks for that lawyer, but is transferred to an “intake representative” whom some might consider to be more of a telemarketer. That intake representative then sends an “investigator” to the home of the victim. The investigator is not a lawyer and is unable to offer any legal advice. Their job may simply be to go in to a house with an unsigned contract and come out with a signed one. In that respect, some might consider that investigator to be more of a “door to door salesman.” In my firm, I have always been mindful of the above. I have never advertised a past verdict or settlement amount because some may feel that doing so is misleading. When someone calls my office and wants to speak with me, I personally return their call. If that client wants to meet with me, they can. I have often thought if a lawyer is too busy to speak or meet with a client about their case, they might be too busy to aggressively pursue that case. — David J. In describing his latest book, founder of the Alabama based Center for Executive Leadership, Richard Simmons shares, “My other books are more to enlighten you and maybe impact your perspective. This book has something you can truly apply to your life and if you do, it will change you.”

If you are looking for just the right way to get your year off to great start, consider setting aside a couple of hours to read Richard E. Simmons, III’s latest book The Power of a Humble Life: Quiet Strength in an Age of Arrogance. Beware, it may cause you to shift or change some of your priorities or goals for 2018 or simply reaffirm what you’ve felt God calling you to do- but it’s worth the time to delve into the subject of “the power in a humble life.” It is Simmons solution to dealing with what C.S. Lewis called the “chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began,” pride.

As I read the book, I could personally relate to walking down the path of pride. It took circumstances that “I could not fix” to make me realize I never was in control in the first place. Up until then, if I just tried a little harder, things went well for me in life- but not this time. It was God’s way of allowing me to experience the power of humility. It was a hard, yet beautiful way to learn it.

above all, is to intentionally spend time each day giving thanks to God. Going through the issues of life, where you realize all that I am and have is a gift from God. Starting with my life, my health, my wife, our children, our home, our resources, talents and abilities, the job and work I have, the relationships He has blessed me with, extended family and friends and finally, the spiritual blessings,” says Simmons adding, “How often do we thank God for the spiritual blessings of life which are more significant than anything else we have and yet it’s amazing how we take things for granted.
