Dawson for
Governor “We’ve kicked the can down the road for so long now, we no longer have any road left.” We can do better. No, we must do better or Alabama will never emerge from the bottom of nearly every meaningful statistic that counts. Join me, as we cast a conservative vision for the next generation and together, we’ll put an end to decades of business-as-usual and make things right.
We MUST stop electing career politicians.
Scott Dawson has never run for office before. He is an outsider’s outsider. Unlike the politicians who owe their careers and lifestyles to big-money and special interests, Scott Dawson is not beholden to any group or association in Montgomery or Washington, D.C. Alabama needs hope. We need to restore faith in our leadership, faith in our communities and faith in our future. For forty years, we’ve elected politicians who have all the answers and yet we have the same problems. Alabama has been fighting the same problems since Fob James was first elected Governor in 1978: corruption, struggling schools, overcrowded prisons and crumbling inadequate roads.

Disciple One Another – Be a Christian Mentor
As Christians, we have been called to disciple one another. Mentoring is a form of discipleship, and you can make a real difference by choosing to mentor others of all ages, most significantly a child. Mentoring programs help youth and adults receive life-changing advice, guidance and wisdom for navigating every day challenges. Youth can gain valuable support and insight into life’s challenges as they grow, while adults can gain wisdom in areas of walking in Christ, family challenges, being financially responsible, dealing with career issues and challenges, accountability and advice in areas of strongholds and temptations, etc. Having a mentor can help eliminate the feeling to tackle life on our own. It can lead to significant change and growth in all these areas of life, and more. Whether you are interested in adult or youth mentoring, your dedication and sacrifice is a Kingdom investment that will have lasting effects for you and your mentee. I encourage you to take time from life’s busy schedule and mentor someone in need of knowing Christ. It will make a better person out of you and the one you mentor! Blessings,

Clear Clutter for Spring
I have been looking at counter tops, tables, and end tables and peering into closets, cupboards, and drawers for a long time. I have been thinking about what insights from my experiences I could share with you this spring. My husband and I are now empty nesters who are selling our family home to downsize after twenty-eight years of marriage—wow, lots of emotions there, as well as ideas I want to share with you. This spring I also plan to focus more on helping cancer survivors with my new book Cancer Survivorship Coping Tools and my cancer coping blog at www.curetoday.com. If you know a cancer survivor who can’t afford my book, please reach out to me and I will do my best to help. Okay, here are my latest clutter clearing observations, and I truly hope you find them helpful.
Bathroom: Make it a habit to regularly sort through this area. It seems like I can always find things that, if I am honest, I will either no longer use or have expired. I also have learned that, especially in bathrooms, it works better to decorate vertically rather than horizontally. That is, wall décor tends to take less space and accumulate less dust than decorating with stuff on counters or the backs of toilets or on bathroom shelving. Wall décor: We are in the process of downsizing our home for something smaller and more frugal. After looking at our home with fresh eyes and at homes online, I would say the magic number for wall décor/pictures per room is two—two large items or two groupings of smaller items. Between windows, doors, built-ins, fireplaces, and furniture one picture each on two of the four walls of a room is plenty. More than that can make the walls of the room close in as well as taking away all potential, and fewer than two in a room can make the room look stark and impersonal. I know this is all personal preference, and this is just my own opinion. Kitchen: I am regularly surprised by the amount of non-kitchen stuff that gets tucked into kitchen cupboards and drawers or starts lingering on countertops. Why? I suppose it is the fact that we spend a lot of time hanging around in the kitchen and all that concealed storage is too tempting to pass up, and all the horizontal space makes it too easy to set things there. In addition, duplicates and extras seem to magically grow in kitchen drawers and cupboards. I don’t know why, but when we purchased a cabin, I had no trouble gathering enough kitchen utensils from my home for my cabin kitchen. Living room/family room: Besides the kitchen, this is another family gathering place for rest and relaxation—
better accomplished if it isn’t cluttered and visually distracting. My preference is to store blankets and extra toss pillows in large lidded baskets and to hide DVDs and CDs out of plain sight purely for visual relaxation. I have always admired my mother-in-law for her ability to subtly change out decorations in this area in a seasonal and visually pleasing way.
Bedroom: This room is the safe haven of any home. The purpose is rest and relaxation. That is difficult if there is a lot of visual clutter on dressers, nightstands, or the floor, and even when the closets and drawers are crammed full. I also feel like I sleep better in a room where I am not storing stuff under my bed either. Maybe that is kind of Feng Shui or maybe it is just a matter of airflow. I honestly don’t know. Garage & vehicle: I don’t know about you, but I often need to walk through my garage and I spend a lot of time in my car. It is helpful to me to keep my garage free of clutter and my car too. Sweep out the garage. Weed out what you aren’t using that found its way into the garage. For my car, I like one-gallon plastic zip bags to store car stuff by category neatly in the glove box or center console. I grab the garbage and recycling out of my car every time I get out at home. I also try to keep the trunk as clutter-free as possible. General clutter clearing observations: Don’t try to fit into anyone else’s clutter clearing methodology. When you truly make your systems and habits yours, they will delight you and you will maintain them. Tweak as needed because life changes and your stuff changes as you change. That is perfectly okay! Above all, make your home a haven for you. This isn’t rocket science. With a little thought in your spare moments, trial and error, and reading the occasional clutter clearing book or article to stay motivated, you can do this! Drop the procrastination and perfectionism. Everything is on a continuum. Are You Equipped to Fight the Parenting Battle? Being a Christian parent in today’s world is more challenging than ever. We are in a battle for our children’s hearts and minds and the tools Satan has at his disposal are more cunning than ever. We are now all in “crisis” parenting as we fight to teach our children their identity in Christ, how to discover their purpose and help them discern how to live in the world but not be of the world. Parenting without a plan is just not a good option if you want to win this war. Here are 5 steps to help you get started on your parenting plan. 1. Look at yourself first. Are there issues from your past that you need to address? Often things such as anger, anxiety or insecurity from our past can appear in our parenting styles. 2. Who will you serve? Take a look at your checkbook and calendar. Do they reflect the spiritual priorities you want for your family?
different choice the next time. Don’t forget to add a dash of grace. Throughout our lives, we will make plans for vacation, plans for sending our kids to college and plans for dinner. How much more important is it that we develop a plan for our everyday parenting? Implementing a parenting plan can bring peace, draw your family closer and help you live out the purpose God has for your family. — Bethany Meadows Bethany Meadows is a mother of five, including a sibling group of four children from the foster care system. The Alabama-based entrepreneur, author, speaker and radio host’s new book Getting a Grip is a practical step-by-step guide that teaches parents how to build a customized parenting plan.
3. Have you established objectives? What characteristics do you want to instill in your children? Integrity, work ethic, a servant’s heart? Be intentional about teaching these priorities. 4. Set the rules! Every home needs a set of rules. They set expectations and establish boundaries. Rules need to be posted so everyone is clear and there are no surprises. 5. Develop a discipline strategy. It’s not a question of IF the rules will be broken but WHEN and how often. We should not be surprised our children are not perfect. They are in training and it’s our responsibility to show them the way. Mix into your plan a warning phrase, as well as consequences that both teach your parenting objectives and provide an incentive to make a

The Rainbow Chicken In October of 2016 there was an “art show” in my living room. It happened
on a school night as I was deliriously tired and trying to point my night owl six-year-old in the direction of bed. Along the way he notices a large stash of his original art work from kindergarten in a corner of the living room. This collection had been recently sorted by his mother and represented the best of the best of the best. It was to be kept forever and ever then two more months after that. Upon seeing his pile of masterpieces my littlest man announces his discovery, VERY ENTHUSIASTICALLY, followed by the point that he wants to show it all to me…...…at 9:45 on a school night. I mentioned I was deliriously tired right? However, this is my 3rd child and I have learned a few things from parenting his two older brothers. So, I say “ok” and take my seat on the ottoman, which is precisely where he has instructed me to sit for his “art show”. First creation from the stash, “The Rainbow Chicken”! That’s what he called it with absolute, unbridled, six-year-old enthusiasm, which cracked me up along with everyone else that heard him. This was followed by a very detailed description of the piece, who his teacher was that year, the kids in his class, etc. This went on for about 20 minutes. Each piece was described in detail until the living room was covered in creations of all sorts ranging from elves, to boats, to sunsets and of course trains. Lots and lots of trains. But only one chicken. It turned out to be a fantastic event and he talked about it the next day, and the next. His “art show” and “The Rainbow Chicken”. Clearly, he was proud of himself. Most important to my littlest man was that his father was clearly proud of him. In his eyes he had gained my approval. Something we never outgrow. Every child craves their father’s approval, even after they are no longer a child. Here is the thing........... If this had been my first son or even my second son that art show never would have happened. I would have ushered them off to bed with an “I’m tired, let’s do it tomorrow”, but that was not my first son or my second son. It was my third. The surprise baby. The one that showed up shortly after my wife and I turned 40. The one that has completed our family in ways we could never have imagined and only God could have designed. That’s how it works! This art show happened because he was six and very excited, but it also happened because of my oldest son that was downstairs. The one it seems I brought home from the hospital just last week but is now 6 feet tall and will leave for college in a few more years. The one everyone told me would be grown in the blink of an eye. He is the one I have
learned so much from. He has taught me, among other valuable things, that they will not stay little for long and I should soak it up while they are. As a father, I have done a few things right along the way, but I do have regrets. I regret not stopping more along the way for my oldest son’s art show type moments when he was younger, but I have gotten better. Honestly, it all happened faster than I ever imagined it would. Much faster and it just seems to gain speed. People told me it would and clearly, they were right. I’ve got it now. Consider this from a man with 15 years of fathering experience that is closing in on half a century of living in a hurry. “Be where your feet are”! Especially with your children. Stop anticipating tomorrow and stop dwelling in yesterday. Tomorrow will be here fast enough and you can’t change a single thing about yesterday. So, focus on “today” and the simple blessings each day holds. Give your attention, when you can, to things like art shows in your living room or your little one’s request to “play with me” in the sandbox. You don’t have to stop for an hour, even a few minutes and a hug pays dividends and tells them they are important. Just do it. As for “The Rainbow Chicken”, it is framed and on my wall. It’s an original. Not another one like it in this whole big wide world and it’s all mine. It reminds me to slow down and pay attention. Get in the boat. Do your part.

Cut Down on Shower Cleaning
Lucy’s Coconut Cream Meringue Pie
A couple of simple items can greatly reduce the drudgery of cleaning your shower. First, keep a squeegee in your shower. Secondly, fill a spray bottle with a solution of half water, half white vinegar and take it into the shower each time you bathe. When you’ve finished your bath, spritz the walls, floor, and doors with the vinegar solution and use your squeegee to easily swipe the moisture from all these surfaces. This will help keep the entire area fresh-smelling and germ-free, and seriously cut down on the need for heavy cleaning.
Pecan Praline Cake
Start with a box of yellow cake mix, prepared in a 9x13 pan per package directions. For the icing, you’ll need: (A) 2 cups of light brown sugar; (B) 1/2 cup of butter or margarine; (C) 2/3 cup of heavy whipping cream; (D) 2 cups of pecan pieces; (E) 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar; and (F) 1 tsp. of vanilla flavoring. In a large nonstick saucepan, melt butter and stir in brown sugar and whipping cream. You don’t want this thick at all. Whisk until well blended. Boil, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Remove from heat. Add vanilla and begin whisking in confectioners sugar a little at a time. Mix in pecans. Pour over the cooled cake and spread. Frosting will harden quickly.
Save Those Shipping Fees
More and more stores are offering online shopping where your order can be shipped to the nearest store for easy pickup with no shipping fee. For example, www.CatoFashions.com, has an impressive clearance section with prices as low as $1.99. And the websites www.Carters.com and www.Oshkosh.com both include great buys on clothing from infant sizes to big boys and girls, plus the convenience and savings of free in-store pickup.
Declutter Kitchen Countertops
Almost everyone wishes for more kitchen countertop space. You may already have it, but it’s simply hidden under unnecessary clutter. If you have small appliances sitting out on your countertops and they’re not used on a daily or almost daily basis, why keep them out all the time? Find a place to tuck away your blender, mixer, toaster, and other irregularly used items. You’ll appreciate the extra space and you’ll really like the decluttered look of your kitchen.
Ingredients:
1 whole pie crust, frozen, baked 1 ½ cup Flaked coconut, sweetened, plus a little more for topping 2 whole egg yolks ¾ cup sugar ¼ cup flour 3 cups half-and-half 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon salt 3 whole Egg whites ¼ cup sugar
Preparation
Add sugar, egg yolks, flour, salt, and half and half to a sauce pot. Whisk constantly over medium high heat until mixture comes to a boil. Continue whisking for 2-3 minutes until nicely thickened and smooth. Remove from the heat, and add vanilla and 1.5 cups coconut. Stir well.Pour into baked pie crust.
Prepare meringue by placing egg whites in a bowl. Beat with a hand mixer on high until soft peaks begin to form. Gradually add sugar. Spread meringue over pie filling, sealing edges. Sprinkle the top of the pie with a little coconut. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned. Allow to cool on a rack at room temperature for 1 hour then transfer rack and pie to the refrigerator. Continue to cool for 3-4 hours before serving. Shrimp will be pink when cooked through. Serve over rice. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

enowned family entertainer Randall Goodgame has a deep and abiding passion for creatively communicating the Gospel to both kids and parents. Hailed by CCMMagazine.com as “…the greatest thing to happen to children’s music in a generation,” Goodgame’s Dove Award-nominated Slugs & Bugs brand is among the most revered and critically-lauded series in Christian family entertainment today.
Inspiration for the Slugs & Bugs series is rooted in Goodgame’s own family. His wife, Amy, and children Livi (17), Jonah (15) and Benjamin (10) are regularly featured on his recordings. And while music is clearly a family affair, the Goodgames are just as likely to be found hiking or enjoying a movie night at home.
The Early Years
Randall Goodgame was born and raised in a Christian home—his family in attendance at Clearwater, Florida’s Calvary Baptist Church most every Sunday. Although he gained an understanding of the Lord at an early age, Goodgame recalls the moment he fully surrendered his life to Christ. “When I was 12 years old, I was picked on a lot in school, and I remember praying at my desk in science class,” he says. “With the simple realization that I needed Jesus, I asked forgiveness for my sin, and asked Him to help me get through the day. I suppose I’ve been praying that same kind of prayer ever since.” As a freshman at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala., Goodgame met Amy during a new-student orientation square dance. “She was my partner and I was embarrassed when she put her hand on my back because it was August in Birmingham and I had sweat through my shirt!” After their marriage in 1997, Randall and Amy moved to Nashville, Tenn.,where his career in Christian music began. A hit songwriter for the likes of Caedmon’s Call, Jason Gray and Ginny Owens, it was Goodgame’s friendship with renowned singer/songwriter Andrew Peterson that helped shift his trajectory.
The Slugs & Bugs Story
In 2007, Goodgame and Peterson collaborated on a collection of songs they’d penned for their children: Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies. This well-received side project led to Goodgame’s stint as a writer of “silly songs” for VeggieTales and helped identify his calling in family entertainment.
“If a child’s favorite music is richly layered with high-caliber musicianship and strong, enduring melodies, it

orizing and meditating on His Word, so of course, I want that for my kids, and for all kids everywhere. And since we work hard to make the music appealing for parents as well, whole families can grow together in their love and knowledge of the Word.” Sing the Bible with Slugs & Bugs Volume 3, the latest project in the series, releases April 27 and features contributions from such award-winning singer/songwriters as Bart Millard (MercyMe), Mike Weaver (Big Daddy Weave), Sara Groves and Andrew Peterson; as well as acclaimed hip-hop and spoken-word recording artist Propaganda and New York Times bestselling author Sally Lloyd-Jones, among others.
A Family Matter
The Goodgame family loves spending time together, often enjoying the wealth of outdoor activities Middle Tennessee has to offer. “Our family takes advantage of being outside whenever we can,” he shares, “whether that means going on a spontaneous picnic at Percy Warner Park or planning a day trip to Fall Creek Falls.”
deepens and broadens their palate for beautiful things in all aspects of life,” Goodgame says of his philosophy. “Whether you’re reading ‘Hamlet’ or ‘Charlotte’s Web,’ great writing helps develop reading skills and a love of language, and I hope Slugs & Bugs can impact children’s love and appreciation for music.” “At the same time, it has to be fun,” he adds. “If you can get ‘em belly-laughing while listening to great songcraft and dwelling on deep Gospel Truths, that’s when it’s a homerun in my book.” Solely curating the tour-de-force Slugs & Bugs series, Goodgame has become a rock star of the genre to both children and parents. Combining first-class artistry with a slew of ultra-talented collaborators and lyrics rich in timeless Truth has proven a surefire recipe for success. In short, Slugs & Bugs songs may catch the ears of kids, but they pierce the hearts of moms and dads, opening a precious door for families to worship Jesus and grow in the Word together.
Sing the Bible
In his ever-enduring quest to find fresh, innovative ways to communicate Truth, Goodgame introduced Sing the Bible with Slugs & Bugs in 2014, an entire project of word-for-word Scripture songs. The album earned a Dove Award-nomination, as did its follow-up, 2015’s Sing the Bible Volume 2, and a subseries within the Slugs & Bugs brand was effectively launched. “I started writing Scripture songs because we were homeschooling our kids, and I was in charge of Scripture memorization. It worked so well that I decided to share them with the Slugs & Bugs fans, and the Sing the Bible series was born,” he explains. “Nothing has impacted my daily, hourly, moment-by-moment walk with Jesus as much as mem-
“Watching our kids grow and change makes life exciting and keeps us on our toes,” Goodgame continues. “Our children are very musical. Livi plays the fiddle and Ben plays the piano, while Jonah is on the chess team and loves running cross country. They each love to read, and of course we all enjoy Pixar and Marvel movies together.” “This is a very busy season as a family,” he adds. “But Amy and I stay connected by going out to lunch once a week and leaving the kids at home once a month for a date at our favorite restaurant, which is currently Green Hills Grille.” Like every family, the Goodgames face conflicts from time to time. “Amy and I try to lead the way by being the ‘chief repenters,’” he shares. “Getting angry and sinning against one another are inevitable in a family, but they are opportunities to participate in the beautiful, total forgiveness established by Jesus on the cross.” “I love being a dad and I love the Gospel,” Goodgame says, articulating the motivation behind the Slugs & Bugs brand. Seeing families around the world impacted by Scriptural Truth set to music is gratifying, but watching his own children draw closer to the Lord in this way is the pulse of Randall Goodgame’s purpose. “I am at my best as a parent when I remember that my kids are just like me, struggling into the journey of discipleship, just a few years behind,” he says. “If I can use my gifts to help parents navigate that journey with their kids, then that’s what I want to do.” — For more information on Randall Goodgame, visit www.slugsandbugs.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/slugsandbugs/ Twitter: twitter.com/slugsandbugs Instagram:www.instagram.com/randallgoodgame/

Serving Veterans in Our Community Are you a veteran or know someone who is? The Alabama based non-profit, Still Serving Veterans (SSV), is dedicated to helping Veterans find meaningful work while assisting employers in welcoming and retaining Veterans as valued members of their workforce. All at no charge. SSV offers in person employment counseling to Veterans, transitioning military and members of the Guard and Reserves at its offices in Birmingham, Huntsville and Phenix City. SSV also has a virtual employment team that assists clients across the United States. Last year, SSV conducted over 15,000 one-on-one free counseling sessions and through SSV, 850 Veteran clients
were hired resulting in 33.53 million in new salaries and benefits to clients. “Our approach to employment counseling is holistic: we help our clients not just during military-to civilian transitions but during life transitions, engaging one-on-one and person-to-person, not via webinars or chat rooms,” explains Al Wood, the Regional Director of SSV, Birmingham. "My work with SSV helped me translate my military skills into civilian competencies which boosted by confidence," said U.S. Army Veteran Jurann H. "Being unemployed for two months, I began to lose faith and doubt my abilities, but I am grateful for the SSV team which was proactive in following up with me even on unsuccessful interviews and helped me identify how to be better prepared for the next opportunity." Another Still Serving Veterans client, Karl S., U.S. Army Retired, adds, " I am impressed and greatly appreciate the professional support, recommendations and assistance provided from SSV. With their assistance, I was able to land a position." To learn more, visit www.ssv.org or call 1-866-778-4645.

How Hot Bathing Can Prevent Alzheimer’s In February’s Senior Scene, we explored a new study from University of Eastern Finland, UEF, which told us that the more frequently someone used a sauna each week, the lower the risk of dementia. The study, led by lead researcher Professor Jari Laukkanenn, analyzed sauna bathing habits of 2,315 healthy men baseline age 42-60 over two decades. The report stated that saunas may offer neuromuscular and cardiovascular conditioning similar to that resulting from aerobic exercise. In March we combined the UEF study with a Japanese study from the Kagoshima University School of Medicine that showed that in fact a hot bath is nearly as beneficial as a sauna bath. The Japanese study showed that whether a person was bathing in a sauna or in a hot bath, oxygen levels increased, heart rate increased, especially during water bathing and up to 30 min after, while overall blood pressure decreased. Knowing sauna bathing increases brain health and prevents dementia by offering brain and heart conditioning as indicated in the Finland study, combined with the Japanese study that hot water bathing as well a sauna bathing increases heart health, parallels can certainly be drawn where hot water bathing can lead to good brain health. But not any warm quick wash bath will do. There are hot water bathing stipulations. And understandably so. If results from hot water bathing are to equal results given from sauna bathing, hot water bathing must in fact equal as close to possible sauna bathing. What the Finland study showed us was the more frequently someone used a sauna each week, the lower the risk of dementia. For example, among those who used a sauna 4-7 times a week, the risk of any form of dementia was 66 percent lower and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease 65 percent lower than among those taking a sauna just once a week. So in order for our baths at home to mirror those results: 1. Bath must be as hot as possible, try and reach 100F degrees 2. Each bath must be for 15 minutes, minimum 3. One must take a hot bath 4-7 times per week. How hot is hot in a hot bath? Go to your hot water heater and keep it turned up as high as possible. With bathwater running and tub ¼ to ½ full, step in, get acclimated to the water temperature and as you can tolerate more, increase the heat of the water, up to 100degrees. If you have a shallow tub, use a wash cloth to wrap around the overflow drain. Keep a large towel near to wipe up any water which may spill. Proceed with caution, start easy at first, you might want to invest in a pool thermometer. Day by day you will get a feel as to what temperature is best for you. Always be concerned and try not to overheat oneself. There are many mornings my bath zaps all my energy and I faintly take to the bed to cool off and continue sweating. Remember, baths are gender neutral. Hot tubs are too aren’t they? Plus it is no one’s business, except maybe your spouse, that you take baths. Worried about dirty water? Just wash after soaking, which will be a relief because sitting up in the air will help cool you off. Bathing 4-7 times per week, 15 minutes each time in hot water will mimic sauna bathing and lead to heart and brain health. If you cannot get to the sauna, go take a hot bath! — Janet Rich Pittman Dementia Administrator, Practitioner, and Prevention Specialist www.TheBrainNerd.com

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: The Lunge This month I want to go over a fantastic leg and hip exercise. This is the mother of all hiny movements! It is great for every sport. It improves flexibility and balance, as well as the usual muscle strengthening and shaping benefits of other leg exercises. It is called the “lunge” and the name describes the movement perfectly, because lunge is exactly what you are going to do. Form: Stand with dumbbells grasped by your sides. Lunge forward with the first leg and lower your body by flexing knee and hip of front leg until knee of rear leg is almost in contact with floor. Return to original standing position by forcibly extending the hip and knee of the forward leg. You may repeat for reps on the same leg or change it up by alternating legs. TIPS: 1. Keep torso upright during the lunge. Concentrate on sitting back at the bottom of the movement in order to insure the torso remains in an upright position. 2. The knee of the lunging leg should point the same direction as your foot throughout the lunge. A long lunge emphasizes the gluteus maximus (hiny) & hamstrings (back of upper leg); a shorter lunge emphasizes quadriceps (front of your upper legs). 3. In the bottom position the knee of the lunging leg should not travel over the feet. The upper leg should be at right angle to the floor in the bottom position. 4. Beginners can make the lunge easier by starting with no weight. You can also do a very shallow version by not dropping down as low with your back leg. The lunge described above is one of the most basic. There are several other versions including walking lunges, reverse lunges and static lunges. All versions work basically the same muscles and are used for variety purposes. — Jason S. Dave Says
Dear Dave, I’m about to graduate from college, and while I’ve been in school my mom has been handling most of my finances. Recently, I discovered she’s been taking my student loan money and spending it on herself. So far, it looks like she’s taken around $12,000, and I have a total of $25,000 in student loan debt. Since I realized this was happening, I’ve been reading your books and learning how to manage my own money. I don’t know how to deal with this situation with her, though. She admits she did wrong, but says she can’t pay it back. Can you help? — Alan Dear Alan, I hate hearing this. There’s no easy way to deal with these kinds of situations. The first thing you need to do is take over complete and total control of all your finances. Shut down any accounts that have her name on them, and anything else financially-related that she can access. I know this sounds harsh, but she has proven she’s just not trustworthy. It’s a hard thing to hear about a parent, but at this point you’ve got to take steps to protect yourself. What she has been doing is theft, and financial child abuse.
— other than the emotional toll, because she’s your mom — is the money’s already gone. It’s doesn’t make them magically have the money to repay you. On top of all this, you’d have a really hard time legally getting the student loans removed from your name due to theft. Honestly, under the circumstances I think you’re probably going to end up eating this. But sit down, and try to have a calm, clear discussion about what has happened, and why it happened. Let her know first, without a doubt, that you will criminally prosecute her if she ever uses your name to put money into her own pocket again. Second, tell her you’re prepared to forgive her and forget about it — and she pays you back at some point, if she can — if she agrees to get some financial and emotional counseling. Try to get her some help, and get her under control, Alan. If you don’t, I’m afraid things are only going downhill from here. — Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. One extreme is to press criminal charges. The other extreme is to just forget it, and pay it. In between is a promise from her to repay everything she has taken, but she’s already out of control. That’s a promise that wouldn’t be kept. The problem with prosecuting someone criminally for this type of action

Just As I Am: Billy Graham When the Apostle Peter stood before the religious powers of his day, he was initially dismissed as a bumpkin from Galilee. Uneducated, unsophisticated, and without social standing, Peter was simply a fisherman suffering from delusions of grandeur, religious riff raff, a wannabe who needed to be put in his place. What they did not know was that Peter possessed something that would overcome all his inadequacies and natural limitations. Peter had God and the gospel of Jesus.
www.ChildrensAL.org/concussion
Almost a hundred years ago, Billy Graham was born on a small southern dairy farm. As a young man, he felt a call to preach. Like Peter, Billy was uneducated, unsophisticated, and without social standing. His initial ministry looked less than promising. His first church sermon lasted only eight minutes before he sat down, trembling and sweaty. Billy Graham, however, possessed something that would take him from ministerial obscurity to the ends of the earth. Billy Graham had the gospel. Just As I Am (Harper One/Zondervan, Commemorative Edition) is an autobiographical account of one of the most remarkable ministers to have ever lived. Billy Graham preached the gospel to more people than any other preacher in history. He preached in small towns and capitals, jails and prestigious universities, country churches and sports arenas. He prayed with Winston Churchill and the Queen, shared his testimony with North Korean Kim Il Sung, and offered spiritual solace to President Eisenhower while he was dying. Graham shared the gospel whenever and to whomever he could, for he believed that the message of Jesus could open the heart of anybody. In many ways, Billy Graham never changed. He remained a simple man with a simple message. Just As I Am is the story of a man persuaded that no person is beyond God's reach and that Jesus is the Savior of the world. — Darrel Holcombe, Owner Sanctuary Christian Books and Gifts

M i s s ion M aker s A Celebration of Generosity: National Christian Foundation Alabama Turns 10 After retiring from the food brokerage business in 2008, Tom Bradford felt God calling him to use his gifts to establish The National Christian Foundation (NCF) Alabama, an affiliate of NCF, the largest Christian Foundation in the country. He was later joined by his son Jim Bradford and they have been serving givers for 10 years now. “I thought my purpose was to raise money for the Kingdom, but I discovered my main purpose should be to change people’s lives,” said Tom Bradford as he addressed supporters Tom Bradford, Chairman of the Board and at a recent NCF Alabama 10th President of NCF Alabama and his son Jim Anniversary celebration. “One Bradford, V.P. of NCF Alabama, address the main portal of changing lives is crowd at the 10th Anniversary Celebration, www.ncfgiving.com/alabama. giving- establishing a network to encourage each other to be generous givers.” Over the last ten years, NCF Alabama has inspired giving that has exceeded $155 million in charitable grants to more than 2900 civic, educational and religious organizations. With the mission of “mobilizing resources by inspiring biblical generosity,” NCF Alabama has gone from serving 12 families in 2008
The recent 10 Year Celebration of NCF Alabama included a comedic message from Dr. Dennis W. Swanberg, “America’s Minister of Encouragement.”
to serving more than 600 Alabama families with donor advised funds for their charitable giving. “Our goal is to simplify your giving [by use of the internet], to multiply your impact [by smarter use of the tax codes], to glorify God [by releasing more resources into the Kingdom],” explains Bradford. “It is a great way to manage and keep track of your charitable giving. There is no minimum amount to open a fund and no minimum amount to keep in the fund.” A couple of other unique aspects to an NCF Donor Advised Fund compared to other donor advised funds is that NCF monitors all grants that go out to be sure they meet Christian standards and all fees associated with your fund go to a Christian ministry, NCF. “Whereever you are in your journey of generosity, just get in the game!” says Jim Bradford, referencing his favorite verse from 2 Corinthians 9:7, “…God loves a cheerful giver.” He adds, “At NCF we seek to help our donors walk closer to the Lord and be cheerful givers, that’s WHY we do what we do.” To find out how a donor advised fund could make sense for you and your family, visit www.ncfgiving.com/Alabama or call Jim Bradford at 205-563-2388. — Laurie Stroud

Do We Really Live in a Post-Truth World? With the truth twisting, emotional appeals, and personal attacks that characterized this last election season, Oxford Dictionaries selected “post-truth” as the word for 2016. According to the dictionary, “post-truth” means, “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” Simply put, we now live in a culture that seems to value experience and emotion more than truth. While modern technology and social media certainly contribute to the phenomena of emphasizing style over substance—two thoughts stood out to me when I first heard that “post-truth” was the word of the year. First, the idea of changing, avoiding, or moving beyond truth is not new. Judges 17:6 says, “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” In other words, there was no standard the people were accountable to, and so they decided for themselves what they believed was true. No doubt they followed their experience and feelings to determine what was right. And by doing so, they demonstrated a universal human proclivity—the denial of truth. Humans always have, and always will, find ways to avoid truth. Second, we don’t really live in a post-truth world. In fact, a post-truth world is impossible. Not too long ago I was speaking at a youth event. Afterwards, a

student came up to me and said, “You talked about truth a lot. What’s the big deal? Why is truth even important?” I looked at him and simply asked, “Do you want the true answer or the false answer?” He clearly valued truth, even though he didn’t realize it. The same is true for all of us. We make daily decisions based on what we think is true—waking up at the right time, taking the correct medications, and choosing the right directions to get to work. Truth is inescapable. Trying to ultimately deny truth is like pushing a beach ball under water. Push it down on one side, but then it pops up the other. Each time you push it down it comes back up. Its nature is to float to the surface, even when we try to submerge it. Truth is the same way. We may live in a “post-truth” world, in which people make choices based on emotion and experience rather than objective fact, but the reality is, truth simply won’t disappear. Truth will keep popping to the surface and reminding us that it’s important. Deep inside the human heart is the knowledge that we need truth to live a meaningful life. We know that truth matters. In fact, that’s why we’re so quick to correct those we feel are mistaken. We may choose experience and emotion over truth, but deep inside the human heart is an awareness that we should follow and believe what is true. — Dr. Sean McDowell, Assist. Professor, Christian Apologetics, Biola University. Learn more from McDowell at the April 20-21 reTHINK Student Apologetics Conference in Birmingham.
