A Mother’s Hand
Have you ever taken your mother’s hand and looked closely at it? It is soft to touch, yet strong to hold. A mother’s hands are never still. There’s always something to pick up around the house; someone to cradle; devotional time and prayer; food to prepare for the family; laundry to fold; and the list goes on... a mother’s work is never completed. As we focus on all blessed mothers this month, I encourage you to sit with your children and show them your own hands and listen to the wonderful comments they make. Also, take the hands of your mother and observe the beauty of God’s love. Wrap your arms closely around your children and show them the true love that you have for them. I have two beautiful children whom I so dearly love with all of my heart. I am perplexed, proud, amazed, humbled, teary and profoundly grateful to be given the gift of motherhood and having the gift of a mother. As we mature, we never outgrow the need of a mother’s comfort and reassurance that all will be fine tomorrow. It is hard to believe that Bay Area Christian Family has been a part of the community for ten years now and I would like to take a moment and thank you for supporting us each month and supporting the advertisers throughout the magazine as well. I look forward to providing this community with positive, good news for many years to come. As we enjoy this wonderful season that leads into summer, take time to reflect on the things God has placed before you and enjoy turning the pages of this issue… Happy Mother’s Day & Blessings,

Brown Rice vs. Jasmine Rice Brown rice and Jasmine Rice are very similar in terms of consumption however when it comes to nutrition, brown rice is truly a healthier choice because your body utilizes the carbohydrate and protein content of brown rice better than it does wheat. You don’t have to limit yourself to long grain brown rice. You can also switch over to the short grain version in the winter which is better for you.
Calories
Whether it’s brown or white, jasmine or plain, it all has the same calories. A 3/4-cup serving, which is approximately 146 grams, of cooked brown or jasmine rice contains 160 calories. With only 1.1 calories per gram, both the brown and jasmine rice are low-energy-dense foods and make a good choice for those watching their weight. Low-energy-dense foods fill you up on fewer calories and help you eat less.
Carbs and Fiber
The carb and fiber content in brown and jasmine rice vary. A 3/4-cup serving of plain brown rice contains 34 grams of total carb and 3 grams of fiber. The same serving of white jasmine rice contains 36 grams of carbs and 0 grams of fiber, while the brown jasmine rice contains 35 grams of carbs and 2 grams of fiber. The brown rice varieties make a healthier option because of the fiber content. People who eat more fiber have lower rates of heart disease and obesity.
Protein and Fat
When it comes to protein and fat, there are slight variations in both the brown rice and the white jasmine rice. A 3/4-cup serving of the plain brown rice contains 2.5 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat. The same serving of the white jasmine rice contains 3 grams of protein and 0 grams of fat, while the brown jasmine rice contains 3 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat. As a whole grain, the brown rice retains its germ, which is where the fat in the whole grain comes from.
Vitamins and Minerals
The germ in the brown rice is also a source of vitamins and minerals. The white jasmine rice also provides vitamins and minerals but through fortification, which means it’s added. . Both the brown and jasmine rice help you meet your iron and B vitamin needs, both essential nutrients. Iron is part of every cell in your body and is necessary for delivering oxygen to your muscles and organs. The B vitamins help convert the carbohydrates in rice into energy. Rice in many countries is a staple food and is very healthy for you. Many people are miss lead and think it will make you fat, not so. Eating ½ -1c per day is a great way to get healthy and stay healthy for life. Add beans or peas to it and you have a perfect meal. “Can You Hear Me Now?”
If you have been to church on Easter a time or three then you have likely heard the story of the two thieves that were crucified alongside Jesus. One on the left, and one on the right. One thief, as he hung there dying, ultimately repented of his earthly trespasses and acknowledged Christ as Messiah, Son of The Living God. The other, not so much. One thief went on to join Christ in His eternal kingdom. The other, well, not so much. Raised in Rocky Creek Baptist Church I was familiar with the story since childhood, but it took on a new meaning for me in my late 30s. That was when I heard C.S. Lewis reference the repentant thief and his earthly “works”, or lack thereof, in a story. Lewis was talking with a woman that felt she had not performed enough Christian service in life to earn her salvation. Hadn’t performed enough “good works” for The Kingdom. Specifically, Lewis asked the woman what “good works” the thief hanging on the cross beside Jesus had done to earn his salvation in the brief time between acknowledging Christ as The Messiah and his own death? The answer was none. The thief did nothing, but acknowledge Christ as The Messiah, Son of the Living God, and put his faith in Him as Savior. That’s it. Lewis’s story intrigued me because I was at a point in my life where the world was beginning to fail me and, ever so slightly, I was beginning to search for deeper meaning to this life. Not just meaning but a real purpose for being here, and everything seemed to point back to Christ. Hearing in that context, how the thief ’s salvation was achieved through faith and not earthly works, hit home. It was like a light was turned on. Reality is,
at that point in my life…. My ignorance of the deeper meaning in God’s word, the lack of life application of the lessons, beyond just knowing the stories, along with my humanness, often led me to attempt to “earn” God’s grace, favor and forgiveness…. through “works”, which was misguided. (Read that paragraph again, it’s important.) We are not saved by our “works” but by faith. As the thief ’s story proved, it all comes down to Faith. Fast forward over a decade to my late forties... I am now a baptized (re-baptized!) believer and Christ follower. I am led, by faith in Christ, to write and share simple short stories about what God has done and is doing in my life. That’s my gift. The stories I write arrive from everywhere. God often puts themes for stories in my head, or sometimes, just a title. I write them down on note cards as they show up and I store them like they have the earthly value of gold coins, because they do. There are hundreds of them in my office. Sometimes a title or theme bubbles to the top of my mind, and then stays there. I can’t make it go away and have learned not to try, but instead to act on it. I have learned to recognize this as God saying, this one Shane…. now is the time to write this one! Such was the case over the last month or so with the thief on the cross and his buzzer beating, soul saving without “works”, repentance before death. The story would not leave my mind. Write the story Shane…. write the story. But I did not. I was so busy with my uber and ultra-important life it was always tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow. Then one day I received an email from my church, St. Paul’s Episcopal here in Mobile, asking me if I would participate in the Palm Sunday service, where “The Passion”, the story of Christs crucifixion is read aloud, played out, in the church service. I had never participated in this event before but gladly accepted and was told I would receive my script in the mail, along with my specific character in the program. The envelope arrived in the mail this past Thursday and I opened it right away. There in black and white was my character. None other than “Criminal #2”, the repentant one. I just smiled. In other words.…. “Shane, can you hear me now”? Some people call this a coincidence, I call it an affirmation and these things happen to me often and in varying forms. It’s very cool. Coming next, as requested of me by The Creator of The Universe, a story of faith and works and the repentant thief on the cross…. and a desperate man named Shane. Get in the boat. Do your part. From Nose to Toes!

Help Your A/C Breathe
If shrubs, weeds or other plants are encroaching around your home’s heat and air system’s compressor unit, you need to cut those back now before warmer weather makes the growth even denser. The harder your A/C unit has to work, the more likely it is to develop problems and the more it’ll cost you to keep your home cool.
Check Those Screens
Now’s the time to check your window and door screens as well as porch screening. Even small tears can allow a host of uninvited pests to invade your home or spoil your screened-in haven. Simple household glue (like Elmer’s) is inexpensive, dries clear and can be dotted onto small tears or holes to keep the bugs out. For larger holes or tears, use clear, lightweight nylon fishing line to stitch those spots shut
Ingredients:
CRUST: 1 whole deep dish pie crust, frozen, baked FILLING: 1 ½ cup Flaked coconut, sweetened, plus a little more for topping 2 whole egg yolks ¾ cup sugar ¼ cup flour 3 cups half-and-half 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon salt MERINGUE: 3 whole Egg whites ¼ cup sugarcilantro and chopped peanuts (optional garnish)
Sparkling Fruit Salad
This is as pretty and healthy as it is delicious, plus it only takes about 10 minutes to put together. You’ll need: a 20-ounce can of pineapple chunks; an 11-ounce can of mandarin oranges; 1 cup of fresh strawberries; 1 cup of green grapes; 1 cup of white grape juice; and ½ cup of club soda. Drain the pineapple and mandarin oranges. Cut the strawberries and grapes into halves. Combine all the ingredients and refrigerate them for about 2 hours. Use a slotted spoon for serving.
Sample Paints
Maybe you’ve held onto the paints you’ve used around your house, but they’re now dry and useless. Most home improvement and hardware stores will mix a small sample size of the paint of your choice and these can be used for touchup – be sure to take your color info with you if you have it. Sample paints are also great for doing small weather-resistant art projects to display on your porch, patio or other outdoor area.
Closing Thoughts
Can anything good come from our troubles? Isaiah 48:10 says difficulties are part of our refining process: “Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction” (ESV). Still, that’s not much of an answer, is it? Why would God allow one of His children to go through affliction? First Peter 1:7 explains a little further: “…that the tested genuineness of your faith… may be found…”
Preparation
Bake pie crust according to package instructions. Allow baked pie crust to cool. For the filling: Add sugar, egg yolks, flour, salt, and half and half to a sauce pot. Whisk constantly over medium high heat until mixture comes to a gentle boil. Continue whisking for 2-3 minutes until nicely thickened and smooth. Remove from the heat, and add vanilla and 1.5 cups coconut. Stir well. Pour into baked and cooled pie crust. Refrigerate until firm, about 4 hours. For the meringue: Place egg whites in a bowl. Beat with a hand mixer on high for a couple minutes until soft peaks begin to form. Gradually add sugar. Spread meringue over pie filling, sealing edges. Sprinkle the top of the pie with a little coconut. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes until lightly browned. Allow to cool before serving. Store in the refrigerator. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering
No one expects you to celebrate bad times, but it definitely takes a lot more faith to praise God when things aren’t going so well. You can have hope and peace throughout difficulties; and as you pass through the fire, you can also know that, as you entrust these troubles to the Lord, your faith will increase and mature. — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? Author, Ordained Minister, Super Mom
Jennifer has a passion for flowers and serving a charity like the Providence Foundation, that helps others, and also spreads beauty. Festival of Flowers 2019 benefits the Foundation.
Jennifer Lopes didn’t become a super mom overnight. In fact, her motherhood began with a crisis pregnancy. As a freshmen in college, the last item on her agenda was motherhood. Her boyfriend had been offered a chance to play baseball professionally, after graduating from The University of South Alabama, and her hopes and dreams of a future career were just beginning. The only choice? Abortion. Through a local crisis pregnancy center, Jennifer was counseled not to terminate her child but to consider the plans that God had for her and her baby. It was a tough decision but she made the choice - for life. She hasn’t looked back. Since that turbulent time in 1994, she has grown into a sought after prolife speaker and is considered a leading Advocate for the Unborn. She believes that being pro-life means also being pro-woman, pro-love and pro-forgiveness. All stages of life is sacred and that includes the marginalized, the broken, the old, the disabled, the wealthy, the poor, the sinner and the saint. Her work over the years has included serving that same Women’s Resource Center, hosting post abortion recovery, leading Bible studies for Major League Baseball wives, establishing youth abstinence and purity outreaches, widow outreach, adoption funding and more. She has landed in her niche, most recently, as as a philanthropy consultant. This is a far cry from the scared, broke, and shameful college girl who was having a baby out of wedlock. Her baby, that was first considered a crisis, has grown into a strapping young man who also got his chance to play baseball professionally. The Lord has a way of turning things around to prove that His plan is a good one. Caleb Lopes was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016. Her parenting advice is simple: take the Bible literally and literally apply it to your children and parenthood strategy. In fact, she is working on her second book that will focus on practical tips and applications for parenting. Her first book, God of the Gray Areas, reads like a devotional. It’s short stories that highlight true events in her life that seemed dark or gray until the light of God’s opinion opened up the truth and brighter side. It can be purchased on Amazon, Barnes & Nobles or online where books are sold. In both of her books she is and will be “an open book.” She has devoted her life to openly sharing her success and struggles with parenting, family and faith. She believes that being a super mom or a super woman of faith doesn’t mean that you are perfect. No, far from it. Jennifer didn’t really have the best role models or support, coming from a broken home as a child. She had no other choice, in her mind, than to change her family tree. She still wonders how much she could have learned and where she would be today if she had taken the job. With her children both very successful and with amazing spouses she admits: “Have I done the best I can for my children? Are the mistakes I have made along the way forgivable?” The answer is yes. When you give your best, and that best is one hundred percent, then you have to resolve that your best is good enough. The rest is up to God. She had a hard time trusting that her children would always make the right choices and finally laid that thinking to rest. It was unhealthy to think that as parents we can control every outcome. Aside from her own charity, A More Excellent Way Ministries, Jennifer and Hugh, both ordained ministers, are very active in the community and beyond. If there is a charity you know and love, you can bet she has supported it or been a part of growing it in some way. One of her favorite assignments was helping to transform the former abortion clinic in Mobile into a beacon of hope, Claire’s Hope, now an educational center and abortion memorial site. She is a certified sign language interpreter and retired from her lucrative and demanding interpreting agency to follow the call of God. She still loves deaf ministry and teaching sign language when time allows. As an event planner, philanthropy consultant and fund raiser, Jennifer is always lending a hand to make the non-profit space a better one. One of her most recent assignments was to help the Pujols Family design and launch the inaugural Strike out Slavery campaign to fight human trafficking. The event was in Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California and is set for three new stadiums and landed a $500,000 commitment from Major League Baseball. Commuting to Orange County California for assignments and event planning with Major League Baseball seems like the dream job but Jennifer admits, that without God as the center of her life, that any success is meaningless. The fears are still real, “Have I measured up? Am I successful?” One of her biggest regrets is not accepting a job offer by Joyce Meyer Ministries. She was asked to be a ghost writer for the ministry and was reluctant to move forward. She said that she was intimidated by the task and wondered if she could live up to their expectations. Fear isn’t something that Jennifer battles but this scared her to death. Someone who has written over 130 books that

her debut: God of the Gray Areas. This book unpacks life’s everyday moments to find the perspective of God. He shines the light of His perspective into every moment if we will only look and listen.
You might find her in her Lolli Pop playhouse (a life-sized building) playing with the grandchildren or making floral arrangements for a friend. She might be found planning a wedding or on a tour to end human trafficking in Thailand. She might be spotted at Spring Training and always will be found frequenting baseball games. She is behind the scenes somewhere now, launching someone’s dream of having their own non-profit charity. Her life is full of adventure but her biggest accomplishments, in her estimation, is raising the children that God gave her. “Being a mother is a holy privilege and I find my greatest joy helping other moms know this truth.” One thing she knows for sure is that she is a good mother. Both Jennifer and Hugh serve as board members for the South Alabama Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Jennifer serves as the Chair for the Mission of Hope banquet, Media chair for The Festival of Flowers and is on the Task Force for the Gulf Coast National Day of Prayer. CC’s Inflatables, Chris Taylor
Whether it be climbing up a mountain, traveling to foreign lands, or driving an eighteen-wheeler at sixteen years old from Montgomery to Mobile (long story) there was never a risk I was not willing to take. Some people may call it young and dumb, but as some say, “No risk, no reward.” Entrepreneurship was in my blood early on as I opened my first computer company at nineteen and began online sales not long after that. These two were blessings that helped me pay for college. Some will ask when I graduated high-school, then ask when I graduated college, and then do the math and congratulate me on getting my doctorate. I thank them, but laughably tell them my sophomore year was the best three years of my life, thus why I am thankful for the business in college because I spent so many years there. After graduating from the University of South Alabama, God opened the door of opportunity to become a Youth Pastor at Friendship Baptist Church where God would use me to minister in a variety of ways. When getting into vocational ministry, there can be a sense that it will be your career path for the rest of your life. For many who are now pastors, youth ministry was where they started their vocational ministry. God would use me there for seven years, and during that time unbeknownst to me, He prepared me for the opportunity of business again after my tenure there. Many in the church knew I was involved in business because of my continued computer and surveillance work from my earlier years. One of our members, Ray Baber, owned an inflatable rental company in Theodore called CC’s Inflatables and thought I would be a great fit to take it over. Brought up in a world where many would either
16 Bay Area Christian Family
be on a boat or in a shipyard, the inflatable rental business was somewhat of an anomaly. At the time, CC’s had been a proven business for nine years in the same location and after going back and forth on numbers we agreed in March of 2016 for me to purchase the company. Did I know anything about the rental business? Absolutely not, but I also didn’t know how to run a computer business or a youth ministry. Richard Branson said, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!” With any business there are learning curves, roadblocks, and hurdles that you will encounter. Add church life and family to the mix when dealing with any of those, or a multiple of any at the same time, life can become stressful and downright ugly at times. As always the Lord has been faithful. I glean on what Jesus said after being asked what is the greatest commandment when talking to the teachers of the law, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” This was my mantra in youth ministry as well as business. More than just treating others in a way that you would want to be treated, go the extra mile and love them unconditionally. Jesus did the same to us; He loved us until death and continues to love us today. Whether you are in ministry or business, when you take those two principles and apply it, you will begin to see blessings beyond what you can measure. So if you are in the market to rent a water slide, bounce house, or a combination of both for the weekend or an event, let us bring the fun to you. We will make sure you are loved on and given the best treatment possible because it’s not just our name we are representing, it is His. God Bless! — Chris Taylor CC’s Inflatables

Attention Rental Owners!
Ever since tax reform was passed, over a year ago, taxpayers have been uncertain whether rental property will be classified as a trade or business for purposes of qualifying for the new IRC Sec 199A 20% pass-through deduction (commonly referred to as the 199A deduction). Finally, on January 18, 2019, the IRS issued a notice which provided “safe harbor” conditions under which a rental real estate activity will be treated as a trade or business for purposes of the 199A deduction. It’s important to note that this notice prescribes several conditions that must be met for a rental real estate enterprise (a tax form introduced by the IRS in this notice) to be deemed to be a trade or business and eligible for the section 199A 20% deduction. For purposes of this safe harbor, a rental real estate enterprise is defined as an interest in real property held for the production of rents and may consist of an interest in multiple properties. Failure of the taxpayer to satisfy the requirements of this safe harbor does not preclude a taxpayer from otherwise establishing that a “rental real estate enterprise” is a trade or business for purposes of section 199A. The following are the requirements that must be satisfied for the safe harbor.
1. Separate books and records must be maintained for each rental real estate enterprise; a. A real estate enterprise can consist of a single or multiple real estate rentals b. Commercial and residential rentals cannot be combined in the same real estate enterprise 2. For years prior to 2023, at least 250 hours of rental services must be performed by the taxpayer and workers for the taxpayer for the year in question with reference to each rental real estate enterprise. A three-year lookback rule applies for taxable years for 2023 and following. It specifies that the taxpayer must meet the 250 hour requirement for the rental enterprise for any three of the five prior consecutive taxable years; and 3. The taxpayer must maintain contemporaneous records, including time reports, logs, or similar documents, to document the following: a. Hours of all services performed; b. A description of all services performed; c. Dates on which such services were performed; and d. Who performed the services Because the safe harbor requirements were issued after the close of 2018, the requirement for contemporaneous records for 2018 will not apply. Rental services that may be counted toward the 250 hour requirement include: (i) advertising to rent or lease the real estate; (ii) negotiating and executing leases; (iii) verifying information con-
tained in tenant applications; (iv) collecting rent; (v) daily operation, maintenance, and repair of the property; (vi) management of the real estate; (vii) purchase of materials for operation such as repairs; and (viii) supervision of employees and independent contractors. However, rental services do NOT include financial or investment management activities, suc as arranging financing; procuring property; studying and reviewing financial statements or reports on operations, planning, managing, or constructing long-term capital improvements; or hours spent traveling to and from the real state. Rental services counted toward the 250 requirement may be performed by owners or employees, agents, and/or independent contractors working for the owners. Triple net Leases are not eligible for safe harbor nor is vacation rentals. If you have questions regarding rentals as a trade or business or other issues related to this new 199A deduction, please give this office a call. — Saty Putcha, EA MBA CBI Padgett Business Services Phone:251-666-6624 1521 Dawes Rd Mobile, Alabama 36695 www.putchallc.com

Young Families: The Cost vs. Protection Challenge Finding the right
balance of protection and affordability is critical
Being young and starting a family is an exciting time - full of opportunity and anticipation. Unfortunately, young families are often the most vulnerable to life’s uncertainties. While many are in their peak earning years, they need to be prepared for potential unknowns. Ensuring proper protection is important when designing a financial strategy to meet the needs of young families. While each financial strategy will be different, there are a few considerations every family should think about. Life insurance and disability income insurance can be the foundation of a healthy financial strategy. A few companies are working to develop new offerings that allow new generations to access and leverage solutions more tailored to their lifestyles, incomes and families. Thrivent Financial recently launched a new Universal Life Insurance product that combines the affordability of term insurance with the premium flexibility and potential cash value growth of permanent insurance.

This gives young parents the option of purchasing a lifetime of coverage at a beginning price point that is generally very competitive with term insurance options. This permanent coverage has the potential to build cash value accumulation that can be used for other things, including an emergency savings fund. Disability income insurance is another solution to consider so families are protecting their paychecks and future goals. New innovations offer options including “stay-at-home-spouse” benefits, allowing couples who have one person working inside the home to stay protected. This type of coverage can protect the invaluable contributions of stay-at-home spouses if they are ever in a situation where they are unable to work in the home. Innovation and financial services aren’t frequently used in the same sentence. However, with the unique challenges and opportunities faced by young families, new options are appearing in the marketplace that are customized to meet the needs of a new generation. — Christina Gibson (251) 281-7312 and Timothy Benson (251) 709-0315, Financial Associates, Thrivent Financial. God First, Family Second & Greer’s Third!
The secret of how to perfectly balance family and work remains an unsolved mystery. Though it is a challenge that both women and men face, women tend to bond over this topic. Nowadays the old school talking it out with your girlfriends is just a small avenue where women can encourage women. Our Facebook and Instagram feeds, Pinterest boards, and all of the invasive targeted marketing are full of women sharing how to “do it all”. Strength in numbers, right? We may logically understand that we are doing our best for our families and careers, but the true challenge is allowing our hearts to give our brains a break. For many women, our tendency to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves is often a greater burden than juggling a job along with a growing family.
Lucy Greer Cheriogotis is no stranger to trying to do it all: raising a family, working, being a good wife and Christian or putting unnecessary pressure on herself. Lucy is the VP of Deli Bakery and Corporate Spokesperson for her 103-year-old family business, Autry Greer & Sons, better known as Greer’s Markets. When asked how she keeps things in perspective she says, “Our family believes in putting God first, family second and Greer’s third. We encourage all of our people to take this approach, and when I take our own advice, I see things run smoother in my life.” Lucy notes her husband, Spiro, is truly the spiritual leader in the household, and she is thankful for a spouse that is a constant encourager and supporter. Lucy and Spiro have been married for six years and have twin boys (Nick and Jack, almost 4 years old) and a daughter, Elle (recently turned 2). “It is important for me to balance family time, husband time, work time, and me time. The easiest way to feel like you are not succeeding is to focus too much of your time in one area.” Lucy shares. Lucy tries her best to keep a sense of humor in life and jokingly describes her children as “mischief producing tornadoes of cuteness” and her job as “a growing family business with its own unique challenges.” Lucy believes that women, no matter what their life looks like or what their responsibilities are, have to cut themselves some slack. Many women find themselves having to pick up the groceries, handle the stresses of working in or outside the home, exercise, keep a tidy home, put a healthy meal on the table, all while looking their best and maintaining a sunshiny disposition. “If you find a way to do all of those things, each and every day, please share the recipe with me.” Lucy laughs. “I think God laughed when He blessed me with twins as my first children.”, Lucy said. Any sense of organization went out the window. Having the twins forced Lucy to loosen the reigns on controlling every situation, and it was the best thing that could have happened. Her sisters joke that Lucy went in the opposite direction of most moms, she became less uptight! “I think my only super power is being able to see in the dark after changing hundreds of diapers, finding pacis that dropped out of the crib, and administering gas drops to screaming baby humans at midnight.” Sometimes you just have to laugh to hold back tears, and if the tears fall anyway, that is ok. One of the biggest challenges we all face today is being present in the moment and having fun with the endless checklists we’re trying to accomplish. Lucy carries a great deal of responsibility at work along with 6 other family members in the business. “The decisions we make affect not only our own families but the hundreds of associates who work with us and all of communities we serve. Without our people and customers, we are nothing. We are so grateful for the commitment people have made to us, and we work so hard to improve for them.” One of the most fun work days Lucy recounts was just a few weeks ago as the Greer family and team opened their fourth Ace Hardware location in Fowl River. Lucy was adorned in safety gear as she chain sawed the big red-ribbon to mark the occasion. “I’m just glad I got to use a chain saw my size instead of the giant one they teased me with!” Lucy laughed. The women empowering women cultural movement can be a true source of strength. Strong and successful women build each other up and lean on each other for support. Lucy says, “finding joy in other women’s successes instead of being envious or comparing yourself to them will bring you peace and happiness.” As women, we are our own worst critics. Lucy has been hard on herself since childhood and still struggles with the terrible habit of criticizing herself. She said, “understanding God’s grace and having better communication with Him through prayer helps.” She continued by saying, “Perfection is unattainable and unnecessary. Let’s focus on what we can achieve, which is a loving, healthy, joyful life focused on family and friends.” Watch Lucy cook every Wednesday on Studio10.

The Trouble with Title Loans! We live in LA (Lower Alabama) where there is a Title Pawn Shop on every corner. Why you ask? Because too many of our Citizens take out Title Loans on their vehicles as a way to gather quick, supposedly easy, cash. But there are hidden dangers in using a Title Loan company in order to gain quick cash. In this article I will discuss the Alabama Title Loan laws, how title loans work, and why they are not how you want to obtain quick cash. Let’s face it our vehicles are very important in our lives. They are how we get to work, how we get to church, how we get to parties and socialize. When we purchase a vehicle, we are purchasing not only a lifestyle but a way to live our lives. However, some companies have decided to capitalize on our ability to pay off the loans on our vehicles and own them free and clear, the Title Loan Company. Title Loan Companies are regulated by the State of Alabama and their rules are governed by §5-19A of the Code of Alabama (1975). The legislators for the State of Alabama set up the following rules: 1) The vehicle must be redeemed within 30 days following the date of the contract; 2) No more than 25% per month can be charged for all interest, services, expenses, costs and losses of every nature; 3) Should the Broker charge in excess of the 25% per month, the loan shall be uncollectable and the transaction shall be void. So, let’s discuss what these Rules mean. Say you take out a title loan for $2000 on your vehicle. The full $2000 plus no more than 25% is due to the Broker no later than 30 days after the loan for a total of $2500. Let’s assume that you cannot pay that amount 30 days after taking the loan. Then you would pay the $500 and renew the Loan. If you continue to do this each month for 6 months, you will have paid the Broker $3,000 in interest for the $2000 you borrowed. Most people cannot pay off the Title loans within

the 30 days and end of paying 2 to 5 times the amount borrowed. However, if the Broker is charging 25% interest and then repossesses the vehicle, he can not charge you any additional fees above the 25% interest in order to redeem your vehicle. That means you cannot be charged with repossession fees, including storage, towing, repossession agents, etc. If the Broker does, then the contract is immediately voided and Broker must release the Title. Usually this must be enforced by the Courts. Even the Bankruptcy Courts have started to treat these loans differently. In the past, we have been able to restructure these loans in a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. However, recently the Courts have ruled that if the loan is in default, then Bankruptcy cannot save your vehicle. Sometimes it is necessary to take out a loan using your free and clear vehicle title as security for the loan. In those cases, you are best served by contacting your bank and/or credit union. These institutions charge much lower simple interest, which means that you will not be paying more in interest than the amount that has been borrowed. Let’s use our earlier amount of $2000 and for argument’s sake the same interest amount of 25% (most banks and credit unions offer interest between 6 and 9% at this time for used cars). If you made payments over a year, your monthly payments would be $190.09 per month (much less than the $500 you pay the Title Loan Company). The total interest on the loan over 12 months would be $281.06 (as opposed to $6000). Finally, at the end of the year, you will no longer owe any money to the Bank/Credit Union and your title will be released, whereas under the previous example, you would still owe the original $2000. This shows how important it is to do your homework. Don’t go for the quick, easy cash as it will cost you more in the long run. — Angela M Cooper Disclaimer: We are a debt relief agency. Benefits of Couples Counseling
With all of the different types of distractions in the world that couples have to face daily, it can be very easy for a loving pair to get weary and forget how to make their relationship work. There are many reasons couples seek counseling but here are a few that I commonly see in my private practice:
Communication Problems, Trust Issues, Infidelity, Difficulty Resolving Conflicts, Intimacy Problems, Financial Strain, Addictions/Other Mental Health Symptoms, Toxic Relationships, Individual and/or Family Trauma, Blended Families, Pre-Marital, Contemplations of Divorce. Now let’s be honest. We have to admit that it can sometimes be difficult seeking professional help when dealing with intimate challenges. But we all know what happens to problems when we don’t address them; they get worse and in some cases, worse may mean that a viable relationship that could have been repaired ends up becoming a relationship that is now unrepairable. So the caveat is to not let fear, embarrassment, or even feelings of hopelessness prevent you from seeking the help you need. Your marriage and your family are depending on you to face your issues and do “your work” to improve. Also remember that in a therapeutic relationship, there is little you
can say or do that will “shock” your therapist. They work with many couples seeking counseling for the very same reasons that you are seeking counseling. Now, with that being said, I would certainly be remiss if I neglect to also say that couples counseling will require a great bit of self-evaluation, honesty, and a commitment to change. So if you come to counseling expecting your therapist to validate why you are right and why your partner is wrong, you will be greatly disappointed. The good news is that couples counseling can provide that safe place to vent, openly discuss your problems and concerns, learn new techniques and skills, as well as celebrate your success. I have also listed several other benefits to couples counseling: Increase Problem Resolution Skills, Learning How to Avoid Triangulation, Recognize & Confront Sabotaging Behaviors, Set Attainable Goals, Improve Romance & Intimacy, Letting Go of Past Mistakes, Increase Trust & Respect, Understanding Healthy Boundaries, Increased Relationship Satisfaction, Gain Clarity of Whether to Stay of Go and Many More. In the end, Couples Counseling works only if you choose to put in the effort. It is ultimately up to each individual to be responsible for the change they want to see in their marriage. If you find yourself struggling, why not seek the help and guidance of a professional counselor. — Veronica Davis Veronica Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addictions Therapist.
