Celebrate America…A Nation God Built The moment you step outdoors here in the South, you know it is the middle of Summer. The heat is at times unbearable but who can resist working in the garden, splashing in the pool and bar-b-que smoking on the grill. Summertime is when memories are made. Our lives seem to be a little less hectic and the children love these lazy days being out of school. July is such a wonderful month because we celebrate the birth of our “Great Nation”. We are reminded of those precious words we recite from time to time as we see our country’s flag around town…our pledge of allegiance. Do we put true emphasis on the words “One Nation, Under God”? God has blessed our country in so many ways and as Christians we must be reminded that He is the almighty ruler. Many soldiers have paid the ultimate price for our independence and freedom, we must take time to personally thank these men and women for their sacrifices. As we pledge allegiance to our flag, we must not forget to turn to the Christian flag and pay the same respects. “I Pledge Allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Brotherhood, Uniting all Mankind in Service and Love.” Enjoy this Holiday with family and friends, make memories that you will share in years to come. These are the times that God smiles down upon us and says from Isaiah 40, “the Word of our God stands forever”. “Before God, all nations were nothing!”

Family Fun with Pirates, Spies and Paul Revere's Midnight Ride! This past election year brought about tremendous political and social tension. In this time of heightened partisanship and feuding, our country cannot hide its disunity. Still, there are places that promote patriotism and unity that we can view as beacons of hope, including The American Village in Montevallo. The Village did not halt its operations or surrender during this tumultuous year. Rather, the organization’s historians, writers, and actors have created and produced a one of a kind summer program that interactively promotes citizenship and is designed for all ages. You may meet some of Blackbeard’s pirates or partake in Paul Revere’s historic midnight ride; change the course of history and spy for the Continental Army.
toric characters in a replica building from America’s founding era. In a sense, passing through the gates into the American Village is entering a modern time machine. Costumed historical interpreters at the American Village bring to life our country’s revolutionary history. They re-enact moments when farmers put down their plows and took up arms to defend liberty, when a new nation was born, and when freedom rang true for the first time. No matter the story or season, the American Village promotes patriotism.
Summer admission at the American Village is only $5 (Tues.-Sat. All the American Vilthru July 29). lage’s activities center around getting people involved in history. Each visitor participates in re-enacting history, adopting a temporary participatory role in shaping America. This unique experience goes deeper than the text of a book or a long lecture. The program places each person in a specific moment. Each visitor will find themselves with his-
The American experiment has survived and thrived for hundreds of years. As we celebrate Independence Day this month, the American Village’s summer program is sure to encourage you to take up your civic duty and be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy. RSVP “Yes!”
Recently, our son Brodie and his wife Kelli hosted a crawfish boil at the Boys’ Ranch pool. My wife Tee and I were talking with two of our staff members, who have been with us for over thirty years, about all the many changes that have taken place during their time with us. One of these long-time warriors asked, "Did you see all this so long ago?" Our response was a simple, "Not at all!" We have watched a simple dream of helping children have a chance at life grow into what Big Oak Ranch is today – a strong faith-based ministry that our children, Reagan and Brodie, now lead with the same mindset. We have learned over these last 43+ years that the Lord will give you only what you can handle at any given moment. There is no way we could have seen back in 1974 to where we are now. God knows you and me. He knows what we are capable of even if we don't. He knows precisely where we are and what we can handle. He also has a plan of what He wants to accomplish through us. Our responsibility is to simply say, “Yes!” Perhaps there is something in your life that you KNOW you were called to do, and for whatever reason you are struggling with the “yes” part. May I suggest that you CAN trust the author of the invitation? Perhaps your life is at the point of you choosing to RSVP to the invitation our Creator has given you. God can use folks like you and me to make a difference in this world. He's just waiting on our reply.

S P ECIAL F EATU R E Seeking Move to U.S. Senate, Rep. Mo Brooks Says His Faith Reflects America’s Moral Compass Rep. Mo Brooks is traveling the state As Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks was practicing his swing along the third baseline in preparation for the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity last month, a gunman opened fire. Brooks ran for cover in a cinderblock dugout of the Alexandria, Va. baseball field, unaware that his name was on a haunting list inside the gunman’s pocket. Reflecting on that morning, he says it’s simply a picture of how Americans have to defend themselves from those who want to use force to “undermine our republic.” “Normally it’s verbal bullets, but we’re in a fight. There are people who do not share our values, who do not share the principles that help make America a great nation, and we have to decide if we’re going to continue to adhere to the foundational principles that have helped make America who we are. If we are, we are going to have to fight at the ballot box.” Serving our state as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives/Fifth Congressional District, Brooks hopes to move to the U.S. Senate via special election on August 15. Brooks is frustrated with the lack of progress on issues that are important to the Alabama voters who have elected him to Congress four times since 2011. He points out that in the past two years, the House passed more than 500 bills that were never voted on from the Senate floor. He believes serving Alabama in the U.S. Senate will allow him to help stop the obstruction of what his party has set out to accomplish in Washington, D.C. A native of North Alabama, Brooks says his Christian faith is directly tied to

to share with voters why they should elect him to the U.S. Senate on August 15, including his beliefs on issues related to right to life, border security, taxation, the right to bear arms, and protection of family income from excessive taxation. The NRA endorsed Brooks in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

his passion as an elected official because the moral values he adheres to in his voting record are directly tied to moral values promoted in the Scripture. “Great countries go wayward when they lose their moral compass, [which] guides you to do the right thing rather than the wrong thing with the power that your country has been blessed with,” he says. The single greatest issue that led him to pursue political involvement on the Congressional level is the United States deficit and debt. He looks to examples of other countries that have experienced financial collapse to communicate the severity of a potential insolvency and bankruptcy on future generations of Americans. Above all, Brooks says, he wants his voting record—and ethics record, with no complaints on file in both his professional and political experiences as a district attorney, state legislator, county commissioner, and U.S. Congressman— to show that he consistently puts his state and his country above personal interest. His ultimate desire is to transfer his passion for conservative issues into action, rather than continued use of filibuster, in the Senate. Learn more at www.MoBrooksForSenate.com. At time of press, a field of 19 candidates will be on the August 15 Primary ballot for U.S. Senate. Hang Those Bananas
Lucy’s Bacon Cheddar “Back to School” Casseroles
Bananas ripen quicker and keep better if air can circulate all around them. Instead of spending money on a banana tree (which can cost $10 or more), buy 1 good-sized cup hook from a hardware store or department. Screw it into the underside of an upper kitchen cabinet and hang your bananas from it. This way, you save money and counter space. (And you may like this well enough to want to add more hooks for kitchen tools and more.)
Freezing Leftover Cake I always cut leftover cake into individual servings before putting it into a freezer container. The pieces will easily lift out separately if you don’t plan to thaw them all at once. What can be a problem, though, is the frosting sticking to the top of the container. You can eliminate that problem two ways: (1) Cut a piece of wax paper to fit inside your container. Lightly spray one side with nonstick cooking spray and place it over the top of the cake (or cupcakes), sprayed side down, before putting on the lid. Or (2) just remove cake servings while they’re still fully frozen and place them on an open platter or individual serving dishes to thaw.
Fried Tuna Patties Deluxe Mix together a can of water-packed tuna (don’t drain it; & I prefer the white albacore tuna); 1 egg; a heaping tablespoon of flour or about 6 crushed saltine crackers; 1 tbsp. of chopped onion; 1 tbsp. of chopped bell pepper; and 1 tsp. of chopped pimentos. If you don’t use salted crackers, you might want to sprinkle in a dash of salt; and if you like pepper, add a generous sprinkling of black pepper. Mix thoroughly and spoon into 4 patties on a heated nonstick skillet or griddle sprayed with nonstick spray (or else a very small amount of oil). Fry each side until lightly browned. Takes no time at all! (I keep chopped bell pepper & onions separately packaged in small portions in my freezer so I have them when needed.) These look as good as they taste. Optional: mix in a splash of hot sauce.
Quick “n” Easy Dill Sauce This easy sauce is delicious on the tuna patties or plenty of other dishes. Just mix 1/4 cup of mayonnaise with 1/4 cup of sour cream, plus 1 tsp. of dillweed. Add salt and pepper to taste (and another splash of hot sauce, if you like it.)
Preparation Ingredients: 1 lb White sandwich bread, torn into 1 inch pieces 2 tablespoon olive oil 1 whole green bell pepper, diced small 1 whole red bell pepper, diced small 8 oz cooked Bacon slices, crumbled
6 whole eggs 1 cup heavy cream or half and half 2 cup Whole milk 1 tablespoon dijon mustard 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup shredded swiss cheese 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 teaspoon kosher salt
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Add peppers and onions and cook for 10 minutes until softened. Let cool slightly. Lightly coat a large baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Add torn bread, cooled vegetables, and bacon. Whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, Dijon mustard, cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, black pepper, and salt in a bowl until combined. Pour egg mixture over bread and mix gently until incorporated. *Casserole may be prepared up to this point the day before, covered, and refrigerated. After being chilled in the refrigerator, allow the casserole to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking* Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Give the baking dish a gentle shake to make sure the casserole is set before removing from the oven. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering
Closing Thoughts In the Book of Judges, we read the terrible account of the people of the city of Laish who were attacked and destroyed. How did this happen? Judges 18:28a says,“There was no one to rescue them because their city was… totally independent.” God, our Creator, never made us to be independent of Him, and every people group who has ever tried living apart from Him has or will eventually suffer disaster. The United States of America was founded on faith in the One True Living God. As we celebrate our Independence Day, let’s remember to stay fully dependent on Jesus. — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? Clear Car, Garage, & Outside Clutter When I write about clutter clearing, I write to help readers. No one wants to hang out indoors to weed out during the summer—unless it actually is too warm to be outside and then you can go for it. Summer is a great time to freshen up your vehicle, clean out the garage, and tackle your outdoor clutter. Pick a nice weekend day and get started! Begin with the car. Pull it out on the driveway and empty out anything that has accumulated in the car that doesn’t really belong there. Cars have many little storage spots. Check in the doors, under the seats, between the seats, the glove box, the center console area, and of course, the trunk. What has been stuffed into these compartments that doesn’t belong there? What lingers there that you no longer need? You may be surprised. Next comes the garage. While the car is pulled out, take a careful look at what has been accumulating in the garage. Sell, donate, recycle, and put things away! If you need to, make a trip to the home store to get some garage shelving and hooks. My husband recently helped a condominium owner’s garage go from chaos to tidy with some basic inexpensive shelving. You can do this too.
Yard clutter includes many things. First, let’s think about stuff. Do you have children’s toys or swing sets that are now outgrown? Is there a sandbox that isn’t being used? This is a great time of year to pass on or sell these. What about weed clutter? Think mulch, a pre-emergent called Preen, and maybe even landscape rocks. This is the time to complete these projects. It also can be relaxing and a nice time to connect with nature to simply go out and pull weeds for a while instead of just look at them! We get weeds coming up in the landscape rock sometimes. It has been therapeutic for me to simply spend a little time walking around the house and pulling them out. Is there nature clutter? Well, I guess that depends on your style. How “orderly” do you like your plants and shrubs to be? If strays, offspring, or out-of-place branches visually bother you in your outdoor space, take the time to walk around with a good pair of branch clippers. Reducing visual clutter even outside may add to your enjoyment of your spaces. If you have a patio or deck, take a look at these areas too. De-clutter them. Freshen them up. Sweep, power wash, or paint as needed depending on your surfaces. It is nice to have well-maintained outdoor spaces to enjoy. Finally, stop dirt at the door. Visitors using the front door can remove shoes there. Think about taking that a step further, especially in the summer—have family members remove their shoes in the garage or even out on the step before entering the house. This is the perfect time of year to clean all the dirty doorsills at all entrances to the home—including garage entrances and sliding patio doors. I even like to brush my dog and trim her nails outside. It gives the birds something to work with for nest building and it keeps that hair and dirt out of my home. Why even let dirt in the door? Sand and dirt are hard on most kinds of flooring. I try to leave the dirt outside or in my garage rather than bring it into my home. You deserve all this, and yes, you can do this! Trust in God. Always yours, and wishing you peace and clutter-free joy, — Barbara Tako Barbara is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. My Alabama Story Leading with Faith. Accomplishing with Works. My Alabama story began with my mother, Vivian C. (Knott) Kennedy, may she rest in peace. She was born in Wilmer, AL in 1932. She was educated in segregated schools her entire life graduating from Central High School in Mobile, AL in 1950. After moving to Washington DC, she commenced her career as a clerk-typist at the Department of the Navy where she worked in a segregated typing pool. While she was living and working up north, she met my father, Robert Kennedy, Sr., a soldier in the US Army who had recently returned from combat in Vietnam. In those early years, our family moved around quite a bit as my father received orders to different duty stations across the country and the around the world. We moved from Fort Leonard Wood, MO to Fort Dix, NJ, to Nuremberg, Germany, back to Fort Leonard Wood, MO a second time, and, finally, to Terre Haute, IN. Upon completing 20 years of military service, my father retired from active-duty, and our family settled in Mobile, AL.
added a chapter on living up north when I received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Right out of the gate, I had individual success when I was elected Class President by my peers. In the process, I learned something about faith that changed my entire perspective on mission accomplishment in a military context. My faith journey wasn’t about me accomplishing things as an individual anymore. It was about leveraging faith and doing the work to achieve success for the team as a whole. By training in a leadership laboratory anchored by the Honor Concept, my classmates and I developed faith in each other, learned to work together as a team, and earned the privilege to lead Sailors and Marines on the continuum from peace to war. To read more of about My Alabama Story and our Robert Kennedy, Jr. for Senate Campaign, please visit our website: www.teamkennedy2017.org/MyAlabamaStory
My Alabama story continued when my family moved into our maternal grandparents’ home in the Toulminville neighborhood. While living there, my mother, brother, and I found our church home at the Greater Morning Start Baptist Church. My mother was a Sunday school teacher; and, my brother and I participated in almost every youth activity the church offered: choir, usher board, Boy Scouts, Crusaders, and vacation bible school. During one of these church activities, I memorized a bible verse contained in James 2:26 KJV: faith without works is dead. In a moment, I learned an important lesson that was reinforced by my parents’ example. My parents had the faith, but they also did the work to make their American Dream a reality. My mom reprised her career as a clerk-typist for the Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers. My father found a job at Providence Hospital where he worked as security guard and in the supply department. My parents saved their money; and, due to a VA loan benefit that my father earned by serving our country in uniform, my parents were able to build our family home from the ground up in Prichard, AL. My faith grew as my brother and I watched the blueprints drawn, the wooded lot cleared, the foundation laid, the house built, and our toys (which had been in storage for almost a year) placed under the Christmas tree. A simple bible verse, James 2:26 KJV, in combination with our parents’ example, fueled my spiritual journey, educational endeavors, and competitive activities from that point forward. Leading with faith and accomplishing with works became my formula for success at John S. Shaw High School and beyond. I had faith that I could take advanced classes and make good grades. I did the work by reading books and doing math problems during summer breaks. I had faith that I could earn All State Honors as a Saxophone Player and be elected Student Council President. I did the work when I was practicing my scales and competing in oratorical contests. Armed with a spiritual foundation and my parents’ example, I achieved my goals by complimenting my faith with hard work. My Alabama story

Each time Hayley Barber has a chance to sign an autograph for a young fan, she pens the same encouraging message: You are fearfully and wonderfully made. A graduate of Pelham High School and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), she competed in the Miss Alabama pageant five times before she was crowned Miss Alabama in 2016. As her reign comes to an end and she passes the title to a new contestant early this month, she reflects on why that message will remain pivotal to her as she pursues a career in pediatric optometry: all people have a God-given value beyond the opinions of a judge, audience or peer. Athletic and “always outside playing” as a child, Barber did not develop an interest in pageants until age 16, when she realized if she wanted to attend a four-year university, she needed to start looking at scholarship opportunities. She graduated valedictorian of her class, but her standardized test scores weren’t quite high enough for academic scholarships. She also had a passion for dance. The Pelham High School Pantherettes Dance Team won third place at the NDA National Dance Competition in kick and won state level competitions with kick, jazz, and prop while she was on the team. It took seeing a Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen pageant winner dance and speak at an event for Barber to realize pageants could be a way to prioritize her education, continue competing in dance, and give back to her community all at the same time. As her vision for her future was taking shape, Barber began to realize her eyesight was perhaps holding her back. She failed to get her driver’s license on her first attempt because she couldn’t pass the vision test. She had noticed problems with her vision in the classroom in the past but had never spoken up about it. After meeting with an optometrist and receiving corrective lenses, she began volunteering at the UAB Eye Care Center. “The very first day I worked in pediatrics, and I saw a young girl put on her first pair of glasses and she just lit up. She got so confident from being able to see things clearly,”

she remembers. Barber could relate to that enthusiasm—she too had just realized the clarity that came from prioritizing her sight. Barber founded her pageant community service platform “Sight for Small Eyes” in 2010. She has pushed for legislation that would require comprehensive eye exams for children entering kindergarten and wrote an interactive healthy vision curriculum for Boys and Girls Clubs of America. She also partnered with optometrists at Wal-Mart Centers locally and regionally to provide free eye examinations to children up to age 8. Wal-Mart corporate later agreed to provide 10,000 free scholarship-based eye examinations nationwide. Working alongside Pelham-based non-profit Sight Savers America, Barber learned that there are many children who are legally blind in the state of Alabama who cannot have their vision corrected by surgery, therapy, or corrective lenses. These children need a closed circuit television (now called an electronic video magnifier) that costs $2,500. In the five years Barber competed for the Miss Alabama crown—as Miss Tennessee Valley (2012), Miss Jefferson County (2013), Miss Phenix City (2014), Miss Talladega County (2015) and Miss Shelby County (2016)—she raised enough money for five machines to be given to low vision pediatric patients in Alabama. “The first girl that I delivered it to was unable to read before she got the machine. When I delivered it to her and trained her on it, she read her very first book on her own in front of me,” Barber remembers. “I’ve stayed connected with another child who received the machine

As a child, Barber developed her dance skills at Exclusively Ballet & Dance on Cahaba Valley Road. After graduating from Pelham High in 2012, she became a Universal Dance Assoc. (UDA) Dance Instructor choreographing and teaching routines to middle and high school dance teams. Here she is seen tap dancing in the Miss Alabama 2016 pageant.

The daughter of Karon Holloway Barber and Rev. Mark Barber, pastor at Hillview Baptist Church near Forestdale, Ala., Hayley says as a child her routine was church every Sunday and every Wednesday. As she got older, she realized faith was no longer something she was required to participate in—it was up to her to make church attendance and spiritual development a priority. “I had to make the choice to have a relationship with God on my own,” she says. “That’s when I started to feel like I developed in my spirituality because I was making an active choice every day to read my Bible or pray continually.” That commitment gave her the strength she needed to handle the criticism that often comes with pageantry and the slips in confidence from comparing herself to other contestants. “Knowing that you are
unique in your own right, that somebody created you for a special reason, has always helped me,” she says. “Being confident in the fact that I still had value was really important to me.” That is why she adds a hint of Psalm 139:14 to her autograph—especially when signing for girls.

and [then] was accepted to Alabama School of Fine Arts.” From among all the contestants competing at the Miss America pageant last fall, Barber was recognized nationally for her community service platform and won the Jean Bartlett Quality of Life Award. “That was probably my favorite and most rewarding experience thus far because I have worked really hard [to] grow my platform to its full extent so I can make the biggest impact I can possibly make,” she remembers.
To all the young women who walk away without the Miss Alabama title this month, Barber says the years she found herself in that same pair of heels she still benefitted tremendously from the program. “If I look at Hayley when I was 16 and just starting out, I was shy. I was a tomboy. I was not outspoken whatsoever. And I look at me now and how much confidence I have gained. I know that’s due to the program,” she says. “I forced myself to live a healthy lifestyle because of the swimsuit competition. I forced myself to speak in public because I wanted to share my platform. I forced myself to build leadership skills by fundraising. So all the different aspects of the program really pushed me to become the best person I could be and I gained lifelong friends along the way.” Barber says she will draw upon the valuable experience she gained from the Miss Alabama program, the scholarship money she earned, and most importantly her faith as she applies to graduate schools to study to be an optometrist and live out her vision of serving others in our community. — Camille Platt

Good BRAIN TIPS for Your Next SUMMER ROAD TRIP Car trips have a rhythm of their own, don’t they? You frame your travel time in your mind as you pack and prepare for the trip. Once in the car you settle in, relax, catch up with a companion and/or they take a nap. But as the miles wear on boredom can become heavy. So if you have a car trip planned this summer fight this boredom and reward yourself, satisfy your interests. Listen to a podcast. A podcast is an electronic recording, known as an audio file with a suffix .mp3. This ‘file’ is given to you, made available through the internet. So sorry, gone are the days of CDs, cassette and 8 track tapes. In your car you connect an auxiliary cable into your car’s auxiliary plug-in and to your device. On newer cars, you can Bluetooth the connection or wifi the connection. (I drive a 10 year old car so I am not the only one behind the times.) Now since you already have an interest in good brain health, thus you’re reading here, may I suggest a couple of recordings for you? During this past sprint into summer, I’ve been interviewed 11 times on talk radio, locally and around the country talking about dementia, Alzheimer’s and ObamaCare vs. TrumpCare for Seniors. Only three shows have been recorded and I have them on my website. For your summer road trip, save these shows, plug them into your car speakers and listen away! Brain Exercising to Get Your Brain Health Recordings Set Up for Car Listening: Save cell phone data charges: connect to home wifi. Go to Google or Siri on your cellular device. Type www.TheBrainNerd.com. Hit search. Slowly, you will see my caricature in the header and the offer for the list of Top 10 Brain Exercises (if you don’t have the list or you are not a member [free] of The Bran Health Revolution click the green button to get your list). You will see a violet rectangle with dark horizontal lines in it indicating a menu. Hit it. Then hit the ‘Recordings of Janet for You’ rectangle. See the recordings. Select the one you want to listen to by hitting ‘read more’ button. It may be slow…patience. New graphics will pop indicating a recording and below you will see an orange rectangle “Play on SoundCloud”. Hit it. If you do not have SoundCoud, their site will appear for you to download their app. (They are not paying me, this is a free ‘hosting’ service for my recordings that I use.) SoundCloud is reliable, relatively easy to use and free. To get the app, hit the ‘GET’ button, then hit ‘INSTALL’ button lastly hit the ‘OPEN’ square. You will need to create an account of your email address and password. Note: you can also put SoundCloud on your computer and listen at home so use consistent data. — Janet Rich Pittman Dementia Administrator, Practitioner, and Prevention Specialist www.TheBrainNerd.com

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: Honor Your Temple
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT) Weird way to start an article isn’t it? We are about the half way point in the year and I was just wondering how are you doing on those resolutions you made early this year? Did you ever even start? Then it is time to make some mid-year resolutions and fast! Here are a few tips from a guy who has seen a lot of resolutions made, and kept, over the past 36-years. 1. Keep it simple. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many goals. Pick the most important one and get started. 2. Break it down. If your goal is to lose weight, take the time to write out a plan. What diet changes are you going to make? What kind of exercise are you going to do? 3. Get some support. This can be anything from setting up a consistent time and place to exercise with a friend, to hiring a professional personal trainer. 4. Hold yourself accountable. If you have set a specific goal you need to mark your progress. If your goal is to lose weight, start weighing yourself 3-times a week, and right down you progress in a journal. 5. Cut yourself some slack. If you gain a pound one week don’t beat yourself up about it. Simply get back up and start again. 6. Monitor your self-talk and remain positive. There is a lot of power in your words. According to the Mayo Clinic, researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include: Increased life span, Lower rates of depression, Lower levels of distress, Greater resistance to the common cold, better psychological and physical well-being, reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress, etc. 7. Be realistic. If you are 50 pounds overweight don’t expect it to come off in a month. You didn’t gain it in a month and you are not going to lose it in a month. One more trick I have used for years, both with clients, and myself, is to make it bigger than you. I started this article with a bible verse. You can’t make it much bigger than that. Other things that can be effective are making it about your family. You may not want to get on that treadmill for you, but don’t you want to be around when your kids graduate? Wouldn’t you like to hear your wife or kids brag to their friends about how good you look? Absolutely, so let’s get started! — Jason S. What is the Deal with Personal Injury Lawyers? It seems every time I turn on the T.V., I am bombarded with commercials for personal injury lawyers, including my own. Decades ago, attorneys were prohibited from advertising what services they oered. Those prohibitions were later lifted due to constitutional free speech protection. Various State Bar organizations then sought to set restrictions on the content of attorney advertising to try to maintain dignity and respect for the profession. Likewise, some restrictions on attorney advertising have been deemed unconstitutional restrictions on commercial free speech. As a result, attorneys now seem completely free to say whatever, regardless of the impact it might have on the profession, their clients and how injury claims are perceived overall. Although there are speciďŹ c rules governing attorney advertising (Rules7.1-7.6, Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct), and lawyers are prohibited from producing advertisements that are false or misleading, some attorneys appear free to produce advertising that not only might lack in taste and decorum but also might include information which requires close examination of the ďŹ ne print disclaimers within each advertisement. “The Hypothetical Law Firm of Tasteless, Cheesy
and Billboard has recovered tens of millions of dollars for its clients,â€? may be a good example. No two cases are identical and a settlement or judgment for one client has absolutely no bearing on what any other client may recover. How and why are lawyers then able to run such ads? The answer is in the disclaimer in the small print you might see in those commercials. Those disclaimers basically tell viewers not to rely on statements about past ďŹ nancial results because they likely have no relationship to any future results. “The last time I went to Court, I went hunting and bagged ten gazillion dollars for my client,â€? may be another hypothetical example of a potentially misleading advertisement. In some cases, judgments are obtained by default and no funds are even collected. I once represented a four-yearold who suered brain damage from negligently administered anesthesia and other sedatives during dental treatment. I obtained an $11,000,000.00 verdict. I never advertised this. It was a default judgment where the defendant failed to appear for Court. The dentist allowed his malpractice insurance coverage to lapse. Although the Court awarded $11,000,000.00, the child’s recovery was limited to the assets of the dentist and his practice, but the dentist became the subject of a Medicare fraud investigation. There were no funds to collect whatsoever. I could advertise winning this large judgment without lying, but because not one cent was collected, that might be misleading. Lawyers
obtain sizeable verdicts by default all the time. If a lawyer is advertising he or she obtained a sizeable verdict rather than a collected recovery for their client, it is very possible the amount being boasted was never actually collected. “If you have been hurt, call me right now!â€? says some hypothetical lawyer on T.V. A client calls and asks for that lawyer, but is transferred to an “intake representativeâ€? whom some might consider to be more of a telemarketer. That intake representative then sends an “investigatorâ€? to the home of the victim. The investigator is not a lawyer and is unable to oer any legal advice. Their job may simply be to go in to a house with an unsigned contract and come out with a signed one. In that respect, some might consider that investigator to be more of a “door to door salesman.â€? In my ďŹ rm, I have always been mindful of the above. I have never advertised a past verdict or settlement amount because some may feel that doing so is misleading. When someone calls my oďŹƒce and wants to speak with me, I personally return their call. If that client wants to meet with me, they can. I have often thought if a lawyer is too busy to speak or meet with a client about their case, they might be too busy to aggressively pursue that case. — David J. Maloney, Attorney at Law Maloney Frost LLC No legal representation is made that legal services performed are greater than the quality of legal services of other lawyers.

Dave Says
Dear Dave, When you use the envelope system, what should you do with any leftover money? — Mandy Dear Mandy, My suggestion would be to carry it over to the next month. Lots of folks don’t use all the money in their clothing envelope during a month. There’s nothing wrong with letting a little extra build up in one of your categories if you don’t spend it all in a given month or two. You should be hitting the budget pretty close each month on categories like food. Getting out of debt and managing your money wisely doesn’t mean going hungry. If you do end up with a little left over in the food envelope, treat yourself to a nice dinner out, or buy something that’s food-oriented. But it’s okay to carry a few categories over from month to month. Just make sure you don’t get crazy and blow that money on something outside the intended category, or on stuff you really don’t need. — Dave Ramsey
Dear Dave, I have some company stock my grandparents bought for me years ago. Would be a good idea to cash out the stock and roll it into an IRA? — Dylan Dear Dylan, Technically, you wouldn’t be rolling it into an IRA. You would cash it out and use the money to establish a Roth IRA. And yes, I would do that. It was very kind of your grandparents to buy you a gift like this, but I think you can do better. You didn’t mention an amount, but let’s say you’ve got $10,000 in that company’s stock. Now, would you buy the stock if you had $10,000 sitting on the table? Most people, myself included, would say no because there’s too much risk. I wouldn’t advise having the majority of your wealth — the highest percentage of your net worth — tied up in one single company. That’s bad news. So yes, I would sell that stock and use the money to fund a Roth IRA or multiple Roth IRAs. I invest my Roth IRA money in mutual funds that have a solid track record of outperforming the S&P 500 for 10 years or longer. — Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. The Gift of a Savior
Salvation means to be rescued from certain doom, destruction or death. Salvation implies that you cannot save yourself. If you were sentenced to death row and awaiting execution and a pardon was offered; would you accept it? If you had a terminal disease with less than 6 months to live and a cure was found; would you try it? If you found yourself in the middle of the ocean, miles from land with no hope of survival and help came by; would you say yes to the rescuers? I’m positive you would say an emphatic, “Yes,” in every situation. Spiritually, that is where we all find ourselves- facing impending doom and unable to save ourselves. We are separated from God due to our sin and desperately need a Savior! Delve into these eight verses to see. 1. Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned. 2. Romans 6:23 says the wages (results) of sin is death (separation for God). 3. Romans 5:8 says that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 4. Ephesians 2:1 says and you were dead in your trespasses and sins. 5. II Corinthians 5:19 says that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ. 6. Mark 10:45 says that Christ came to give His life a ransom for many. 7. Luke 19:10 says that Jesus came to seek and save the lost. 8. Acts 4:12 says there is salvation in no one else and there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved. Because of sin, we have a problem we cannot fix and a debt we cannot pay. We couldn’t reach God so He came down to earth in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ and provided us salvation. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 Have you said, “Yes,” and received the salvation God has provided? If not, I encourage you to accept His invitation today. — Tony Cooper Celebrating 26 Years of Service as Exec. Director, Jimmie Hale Mission www.jimmiehalemission.com
