Celebrate America…A Nation God Built The moment you step outdoors here in the South, you know it is the middle of Summer. The heat is at times unbearable but who can resist working in the garden, splashing in the pool and bar-b-que smoking on the grill. Summertime is when memories are made. Our lives seem to be a little less hectic and the children love these lazy days being out of school. July is such a wonderful month because we celebrate the birth of our “Great Nation”. We are reminded of those precious words we recite from time to time as we see our country’s flag around town…our pledge of allegiance. Do we put true emphasis on the words “One Nation, Under God”? God has blessed our country in so many ways and as Christians we must be reminded that He is the almighty ruler. Many soldiers have paid the ultimate price for our independence and freedom, we must take time to personally thank these men and women for their sacrifices. As we pledge allegiance to our flag, we must not forget to turn to the Christian flag and pay the same respects. “I Pledge Allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Brotherhood, Uniting all Mankind in Service and Love.” Enjoy this Holiday with family and friends, make memories that you will share in years to come. These are the times that God smiles down upon us and says from Isaiah 40, “the Word of our God stands forever”. “Before God, all nations were nothing!”

Because of Whose I Am: A Nazi's Daughter

In the summer of 1932, Germany held a national election. After years of economic depression, the people wanted prosperity again. Suffering defeat in the first World War, they wanted to make their nation great again. Tired of political battles and government ineptitude, they desired strength and stability. Suspicious of those who worshiped God differently, and afraid of the rising ideology of godless Marxism, they went to the polls. In July of that fateful year, the German people, including many professing Christians, voted the Nazi party into parliamentary power. Ten years later their cities were in flames, their sons were dying all over Europe, and their neighbors were being murdered in death camps. The land of Luther and Bach became the domain of a demoniac, and the whole world paid a price in death and destruction. In the recently published book, Because of Whose I Am: A Nazi's Daughter ($18.99), we encounter a true story of what it was like to live in Hitler's Germany. Helga Lades' childhood was overshadowed by Nazi ideology and the war. Her father, an atheist, was a Nazi official who forced Helga's mother to keep her faith a secret. When the war was over, her father was disgraced and imprisoned. Helga met an American soldier who fell in love with her on their first night together. She married him, moved to America, and started a family. Years later, Helga found the faith of her mother, became a follower of Jesus, and attended a church here in Birmingham. Her life is a testament of the redemptive and transformative grace of God. Helga's story is a powerful reminder of two important truths. First, God's Spirit cannot be contained. He moves whenever and wherever He wishes. Second, no nation, regardless of how "ChrisBirmingham’s Kathleen Jones (at right) along with the late tian" it appears to be, is safe from falling into barbarity and wickedness. The ascent of Hitler and the horrors that followed occurred for numerous reasons, but the saddest reason may be that many Helga Lades Allison, authored Allison’s personal story of living in Hitler’s Germany. German churches and clergymen were complicit in the rise of fascism. When a nation places an ungodly person into power, they should expect ungodly things to happen. God's people should be ever vigilant in resisting ethnic hostility, bigotry, nationalism, and warmongering. Too many churches tried to baptize Nazi ideology, and God will hold them responsible. Their betrayal of the Gospel should serve as a warning. If it happened in Helga's childhood Germany, it can happen anywhere. — Darrel Holcombe, Owner Sanctuary Christian Books and Gifts

STEPS Proactive Parenting Sometimes, teenagers take drugs or drink. Maybe even the one in your home. You may be thinking, “That can’t happen to us!” Are you sure? Because 75% of high school students have tried some type of addictive substance, and 40-50% use drugs, drink alcohol, or do both. In fact, 90% of Americans with addiction started before the age of 18. Why do teenagers do it? • To fit in, because they are eager for connection and hanging around friends who do it. • Because they want to have fun, and they don’t see it as a huge risk or that big a deal. • Deep inside, they feel pain or emptiness, and they want to escape from those feelings. • Their lives are disrupted by a family move, divorce, changing schools, or a breakup. • There is a related medical or emotional issue, such as ADHD, depression, or anxiety. • They have developed behavior traits that influence them toward substance abuse. How Parents Can Help. Is there anything parents can do to help protect their kids against addiction? Yes. STEPS Proactive Parenting is an education program for parents to become intentional about protecting their kids from addictions. This training and coaching will teach parents how to raise kids to be balanced emotionally, spiritually, and personally to lessen the risk of addiction. These proven seminars can help all of us learn from how God parents us with both grace and truth. They are delivered by STEPS Ministries, a Christian nonprofit organization in Birmingham with a vision for all people to find hope, healing, and help and avoid the tragedy of addiction.

What Parents Are Saying “Great understanding of the pressures my child may be facing, how he may seek relief from pain, and how I can be aware and come alongside if destructive behaviors take over his life.” “This is the beginning of the spread of a powerful, wonderful message, not just for folks in the middle of dangerous addiction, but even for the parent who does not fear this for their child.” “This seminar was the best investment of time I have made recently, and I can recommend this session to other parents without hesitation.” What You Can Do 1. Sign up for the STEPS Ministries weekly blog, www.lifeimprovementsteps.com 2. Ask your church or organization to sponsor a STEPS Proactive Parenting seminar. The Game Changer

Begining in 1990 I spent seven seasons as a minor league baseball player in the Baltimore Orioles organization. While in season we played ball seven days a week with the only variation being Sunday. On Sunday we played a day game, which meant we showed up for work well before lunch on Sunday morning. This left no time for attending Sunday morning church services even if anyone had wanted to do so. Young and invincible, most of us had little interest. Occasionally on Sunday morning “chapel” was offered. A local pastor or speaker would come in and conduct a short service somewhere in the stadium. The consistency of schedule varied from week to week, as did the size of the crowd. When chapel was offered I usually went, primarily because I knew I should. Looking back, I don’t remember a single speaker or take away point from a single meeting. Except for one. I remember one vividly. It was the summer of 1991 while I was playing for the Frederick Keys and on the road for a series in Winston Salem, North Carolina. The speaker that morning looked to be in his late 20s to early 30s. He had spent much of his prior adult life addicted to drugs and although he had been clean for a couple of years the physical damage caused by his past lifestyle was still obvious. I also remember he seemed very happy. He told us of his personal battle in detail. How he had burned every bridge in his life until he had none left to burn and nowhere left to turn. How it took hitting rock bottom and no remaining options before he finally decided to get himself clean. “Clean” turned out to be something he could not achieve until he asked God for help. Until he gave God permission to work in his life. The key word is “permission”. We’ve all heard the rest of the story. God showed up. A life was changed. While his story was interesting, it wasn’t the testimony he gave that moved me to remember him initially. It was a comment made by a team mate as we walked away. Simply put he stated, “If God lets that S.O.B. in heaven then I ain’t got nothing to worry about”. My thought then was the same as it is today… That’s not how it works.

Regardless, my team mates comment served to drive that fifteen-minute chapel, the speaker, and his story into my mind. As the years have gone by it has remained there but the story, the story has evolved. A decade later, as I reached my 30s and called myself a Christian, I would sometimes think about the speaker and that day. Specifically, I would wonder what would lead a young man to get up on a Sunday morning to talk to a bunch of kids he didn’t even know? What would lead him to pour his guts out to strangers about the mistakes he had made and talk passionately about the God that had saved him from himself? More importantly, what did he have that I did not? It had never crossed my mind to do such things. What would I even say to other people? Another decade later, as I reached my mid-40s, I arrived at the end of myself. Just like the speaker, I asked God for help and gave Him permission to work in my life. God showed up and another life was eternally changed. Arriving at that surrendered point in my life allowed me to answer the question above that had evaded me for so long. “What leads someone to share with others what God is doing and has done in their life”? The answer is this... You move past religion to a personal Spirit filled relationship with The Living God, through His son Jesus Christ. It is that personal relationship that unleashes the power of the gospel, the Holy Spirit, to work in a human life. It repairs people. Then moves those people outside of their comfort zone to reach others, through them. It is a game changer! It will bring a drug addicted man to “clean”. Then lead him to a baseball field on a Sunday morning to cheerfully tell a handful of baseball players of the wonderful things God has done and is doing in his life. Just like it will pick an empty former baseball player up off the floor. Then lead him to write stories and tell others of the wonderful things God has done and is doing in his life. To the speaker that Sunday morning in Winston Salem, North Carolina. It took twenty years, but I get it now. Thank you for your time and your testimony. It was not wasted. It made a difference in at least one. — Shane Hale Hale is a “redeemed & re-purposed professional baseball player” working as a Realtor with Bellator Real Estate & Development. Faith and Family

Spiro and Lucy Cheriogotis keep their Faith and their Family at the forefront of their lives. Spiro Cheriogotis married Lucy Greer in 2012 at the same church where Lucy grew up. Since their marriage, Lucy and Spiro have welcomed twin sons, Nick and Jack, who will turn 3 in July, and their one-year-old daughter, Eleanore. “Everything we do, each day,” Spiro speaks of Lucy and their work, “we do so that we can provide fuller, safer, more faith-filled lives for our children.” Without a doubt, Spiro and Lucy stay on the go. Lately, Spiro and Lucy find themselves together on the campaign trail. With the Republican Primary Runoff looming on July 17th, “campaigning feels like our full-time job,” Lucy jokes. In addition to being a fulltime mom and campaigner, Lucy is the Spokeswoman and VP of Deli/Bakery for her family’s 102 year-old business. Autry Greer and Sons, better known as Greer’s Markets, maintains 30 stores in the Southeast. Lucy beams, “I’m so proud to be a part of our family business, something that began with my Great-Great Grandfather over 100 years ago.” “Our Team Vision,” Lucy continues, “is to bring added joy, well-being, and value to people’s lives. Our family has been so blessed, and we hope to pass some of those blessings on to others.” Spiro spoke to us about his Christian upbringing, “My Faith really grew in strength when my family joined a few others in a new church, known back then as Harvest Methodist. I was 13 years old. From a handful of people meeting in my elementary school lunchroom, I watched that church grow so large that their youth group recently filled four soccer fields. I remember when there were only six of us meeting in my best friend’s living room.” “Stepping out in Faith sometimes feels scary or hard,” Spiro told us that he is continually amazed at how rewarding a life guided by Faith can be. “I felt called to the legal field despite being well down the path towards medical school. Since then, I’ve seen doors open that I can still hardly believe.” Spiro promises that his “goal is always to apply my Faith to each and every decision I’m asked to make.” The couple spoke to us about their children, Nick, Jack, and Elle. They described Nick as very focused and very strong-willed. Jack as sweet, single-minded, and in constant motion. As for Elle, according to Spiro, “she’s an angel.” “Without a doubt, raising our kids well is our first priority,” says Lucy. “We want to give them a safe home, neighborhood, and community to grow up in. To just be kids.” After graduating from the University of Alabama School of Law, Spiro began his legal career as a Mobile County Assistant District Attorney. “I loved serving the people of Mobile County as a prosecutor. Prosecutors, unlike private attorneys, don’t serve any one client. We serve the interests of Justice, whatever they may be.” Spiro described his work as a prosecutor as an “awesome responsibility.” Spiro served as a lead prosecutor in Mobile County’s District Court, Juvenile Court, Veterans Court, Drug Court, and Circuit Court during his career. “There’s no other place where you can gain more in-court experience than the DA’s office. I loved working under DA Ashley Rich, alongside so many brilliant prosecutors. I handled more cases in a week than most attorneys do in a year.” With a rapidly growing family, Spiro left the DA’s office in 2016 to join the private practice of law. “I hated to leave, but my family’s needs come first.” Spiro told us that he learned the value of hard work at a young age, following his Dad around as he ran the family’s Vending and Catering business. “By 12, I

Princess[es] in Camo:

Duck Dynasty’s Missy & Mia Robertson Duck Dynasty may have aired its final episode on A&E Network last spring, but 14-year-old Mia Robertson and her mother, Missy, have found a way for the playful antics among young cousins to live on in a new book series. A fictional take on what it was like filming reality television with family, Princess in Camo (Zonderkidz, $8.99) launched earlier this year with its first two titles, Allie’s Bayou Rescue and Running from Reality. Intended for girls age 8-12, they offer the same blend of relationship building, silliness, family values, leaning on Scripture, and the great outdoors found in Duck Dynasty—but with messages fit for pre-teens and parents as well. In the series, protagonist Allie Carroway is 12 years old and dealing with the challenges of severe allergies and the embarrassment of fame. In the first book, rumors among producers and family suggest if she has another serious asthma attack, her parents may sell their home and move from the Louisiana Bayou to Arizona, far from the homes and property where they film their reality television show, Carried Away with the Carroways. This was an ailment specifically chosen by Mia to reflect the physical and emotional struggles that she has shared with audiences nationwide. Mia was born in 2003 with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and had her first corrective surgery at three months old. Since, she has also had palate correction surgery (7 months old) and a second lip correction surgery with additional correction to nasal passages (5 years old). In 2014, Mia underwent a major bone graft surgery, in which her physician took bone from her left hip and placed it in the cleft of her upper jaw. Missy explains that the Christian faith the Robertsons vocally cling to on screen has carried the family through it all. As Allie’s health challenges follow her through the book series—which will expand to four titles in early September—so do glimpses into the Robertsons’ lives among camera crews. Missy says that while the characters and basic plot of each book were dreamed up by cousins Mia, Bella, Lily, Merrit and Rowdy, there are plenty of nonfiction glimpses sprinkled throughout that give a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like to film Duck Dynasty. While

Advice I’ve been given lately, having a middle school daughter for the first time, is this too shall pass,” Missy Robertson says with a laugh of raising daughter Mia, now 14. “God is ultimately in charge but he’s given us the responsibility of leading our children, and as long as we take that seriously, we have fun with them, we’re open, [we’re going to be okay]. Basically, I think the No. 1 thing in raising kids is being honest. Letting them know when you fail. Letting them know when you mess up and apologizing for it, and then they can understand that they can do that too.”

filming Carried Away with the Calloways, for example, Allie and her cousins hint at required wardrobe changes and mandatory gun safety training. The Diva Duck Blind, a glittered-duck decorated fort in Allie’s Bayou Rescue, is based on a real hideout Mia and her cousins decided to remodel to help Rowdy Robertson feel welcome after his adoption in 2016. And in Chapter 7, the cousins communicate covertly behind producers’ backs by drawing in the dirt. Missy says that detail was added as an accurate portrayal of the family bond that made Duck Dynasty so appealing to begin with. “Oh, they can read each other’s minds. They understand each other’s looks,” she says. “That’s what happens in real relationships. You can almost finish each other’s sentences. Even though that gave more of a visual—writing in the dirt and things like that—they are very close in real life, and I hope it came across that way in the book. I think it did.” Ultimately, Missy says the books reflect lessons that are vital to the pre-teen years, including perseverance, family bonds, and sacrificing for those you love. As Birmingham Christian Family parents and youth head into summer and plan for a new school year in the fall, Missy shares four of the lessons found in the book series: 1. Speak Up. In Allie’s Bayou Rescue, Allie’s father tells her not to worry so much, but Allie is quick to inform him that 12 years olds do, in fact, worry quite a bit. It’s a moment that represents a child learning to lean on her parent and a parent realizing his daughter can listen to her own instincts and build her own faith. Missy and Mia Robertson will release books three and four of the Princess in Camo series in early September. Dog Show Disaster features famous lap dog Hazel Mae, seen here on a bike ride with Missy.

For Missy, it’s this slow growth toward independence that should make a parent proud. “They are going to have to start making decisions on their own as individuals and not just lean on their parents to make every decision for them. They are going to have to step out on their own and have their own faith,” she says. “That sometimes is hard for parents, especially if it’s your firstborn.”

“A lot of that has to do with the people around you, especially with girls in that age group influencing each other in what to say and how to say it. Each one of those books hit on that a little bit.” 4. Stay Put. As Allie and her cousins dream of a life away from the cameras in Running from Reality, sometimes we’re all tempted to completely rewrite our lives. However, it’s possible God has given us opportunities we shouldn’t miss right where we are. When what used to excite us about life becomes mundane, count your blessings.

2. Trust in God’s Love. It’s a matter of bravery to pray for God to remove a specific challenge from your life and know it may not happen. “God has his reasons for doing and not doing what he does and doesn’t do, but you have to trust that God loves us more than anything In 2015, Duck Dynasty’s Missy Robertson authored the book Finally, Missy hopes parents and girls investelse on earth and wants that relationship with Blessed, Blessed…Blessed chronicling her family’s journey ed in the Princess in Camo series will look to us,” Missy says. “Sometimes he allows us to go of raising a child born with a cleft lip and palate. Triggers of Alzheimer’s

In search of the root cause of why some are vacuumed away by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia while others excel in aging, (how about that Roger Gentilhomme winning Senior Olympic Tennis Trials at age 100), nearly 200,000 published studies, representing years of scientific research, have been conducted on Alzheimer’s.1 These studies indicate that dementia is not a normal part of aging. On the contrary, it is an actual disease, and it can be stopped and even reversed in most cases. The only way to stop disease is to discover and halt the root cause The following seven triggers, experienced separately but mostly in combination, are the leading causes of brain cell death causing dementia.

1. Excess Sugar and Processed Foods

High amounts of omega-6 oils, along with an overabundance of trans fats, together with harmful additives (MSG, color dyes, gluten, processed sugars, synthetic preservatives) lurk in processed foods. These additives immediately spur and provoke brain inflammation, killing a large amount of brain cells. All simple carbohydrates immediately convert to sugar in the body, and sugar-packed blood cannot feed brain cells because brain cells then quit producing insulin and become insulin resistant. Damaging, then killing brain cells and slowly inhibiting nutrient absorption over a lifetime, resulting in dementia.

2. Aluminum, Mercury, Fluoride, Arsenic

These metals accumulate in your brain over time and activate inflammatory cells that go on a rampage, causing serious cell damage and death in the brain , specifically in areas where sensory memory and working memory turn into short-term memory.

3. Herbicides, Insecticides, and Fungicides

These aptly named chemicals (cide, Latin, “to kill”) kill organs that negatively affect plants. We eat plants laced with these –cides, as well as animals that have eaten those plants. Accumulation of these in our brain fat activates brain immune cells, causing chronic brain inflammation and brain cell death.

4. Long-Term Infections

Prolonged, chronic, or poorly controlled infections continuously activate the immune system in the brain. When this system is forced to remain on high alert and function continuously, it goes haywire eating up good and bad, weakened brain cells.

5. Repetitive Head Trauma, Continual Physical and Emotional Stress

These factors cause and eventually skew low-grade brain inflammation, causing it to overreact in some areas and under-perform in others, ultimately damaging then killing brain cells.

6. Historical, Consistent Lack of Sleep

Lack of sleep prevents the immune and glymphatic systems of the brain from functioning properly, disenabling them from their crucial duty of clearing toxins, weak or damaged cells, and other brain impurities. These adverse particles accumulate, further preventing sleep and advancing chronic brain inflammation where the end result is dementia.

7. Giving up on the Challenge to Age Healthfully

As we creep into middle age and our senior years, brain cells are weak, irresponsive, and malfunctioning due to the above triggers. Brain cells can no longer effectively absorb nutrients or flush out toxins, and garbage caused by various triggers seeps in and breaks the blood brain barrier, destroying cell connector cells and shriveling neurons. It is difficult to conquer all of this, so will, determination and action to avoid these triggers is key. You must fight the perils of aging. If you want to enjoy better brain and body health in your latter years, you must take on the challenge of being mindful to avoid the triggers listed here. To know how to fight these triggers so you can enjoy long term brain and bodily health, read my free booklet 9 Signs You Are Experiencing Brain Drain and How to Keep Your Brain Fully Charged to Ward Off Dementia found at www.JanetRichPittman.com. — Janet Rich Pittman Brain Health Specialist Former Dementia Administrator and Practitioner www.JanetRichPittman.com, Janet@JanetRichPittman.com

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: Kneeling Cable Ab Crunch I probably get more requests for abs/core/stomach exercises than anything else. Yet I don’t know if I have ever written a single article about one of my all time favorites. We call this a kneeling cable crunch, but in a pinch you could also use a simple resistance band anchored overhead. This exercise works the Rectus Abdominus. These are the muscles that you think of when you hear the word abs or six-pack. When they are toned and developed not only are they attractive, but also aid in almost all sporting endeavors. This exercise is also a good way to help strengthen your core to insure a healthy back. Before I get into the how to’s of this fantastic exercise I would like to add a disclaimer. If you have a big fat gut this is not going to fix it. In fact, no single exercise is ever going to fix it. To slim down you are going to have to clean up your diet and start exercising your whole body. There are also no magic pills or other quick fixes. You are going to have to make up your mind and start making some changes and the sooner the better!

Having said that, this is a one more great exercise to add to your arsenal.

1. Kneel below a high pulley that contains a rope cable attachment. 2. Grasp cable rope attachment and lower the rope until your hands are placed in front of your forehead. (photo-A) 3. Flex your hips slightly and keep them locked in place. 4. With the hips stationary, flex the waist as you contract the abs so that the elbows travel towards the middle of the thighs. Exhale and and hold the contraction for 1-2 seconds. (photo-b) 5. Slowly return to the starting position as you inhale. Tip: Make sure that you keep constant tension on the abs throughout the movement. 6. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions. I usually recommend 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps on this exercise.

Variations: A

1. If you do not have access to a cable machine you can use a resistance band. 2. Performing this exercise with a single stirrup handle instead of a rope will allow you to concentrate on each side separately. Performing the exercise to the side puts more emphasis on the serratus and oblique muscles.

Tips for Performing Cable Kneeling Curls

Go slow and squeeze. You do not need much weight on this movement. Concentrate on the full range of movement with proper extension and contraction. This is one of those burn exercises. It’s not about the weight; it’s about the contraction.

B

Keep hips stationary. Your butt should stay touching your heels at all times and without pivoting at the hips. Vacuum as you go. As you perform the contraction breathe out and try and suck in your belly button to your backbone. It adds another level of contraction and helps activate the deep core muscles known as the Transverse Abdominis. — Jason S. Greene E-mail your question to Jason@JasonsFitness.com You can see this exercise and many others demonstrated at www.southfit.com!

Dave Says

Dear Dave, I’m retired, and in the past few years I’ve taken up painting. This hobby has begun bringing in more money than I expected. I was wondering at what point I should start thinking about separating my art money from my personal finances, and look at officially starting a little business. — Pat Dear Pat, I’d do it now. A hobby that makes money is called a business. Hearing this is scary to some people, but starting a small business doesn’t have to be complicated. You can go to your bank, and using your Social Security number, open a sole proprietor checking account. Title the account with your full name, then DBA — doing business as — and the name of your business. All your art income goes into that account, and any expenses paid where your painting is concerned comes out of that account. After the income goes in, and the expenses come out, what’s left is profit. That’s what you’ll end up paying taxes on. Also, you’ll be required to do quarterly estimates and send them to the IRS if you make more than $640 in a quarter. Always remember to always hold back 25 percent for taxes, too, in a separate savings account just for this purpose. This is really cool, Pat. I think you’re on the verge of being very successful! Good luck, Stacy! — Dave Ramsey

Dear Dave, I’ve been following your teachings for a while, and I’ve noticed you advise people to get things in writing when dealing with creditors. Usually, it seems like you’re talking about credit cards and things like that when this is mentioned. I finally made my last student loan payment the other day. Do you think it would be a good idea to request a formal statement saying my student loan debt has been completely paid off? — Andrea Dear Andrea, Following up on paid-off debts is always a good idea. It wouldn’t hurt to write, and request formal, written confirmation that everything is paid in full. You can do this through email, so you’ll have a record of contact, or you can send a certified letter — return receipt requested — through the postal system. That way, you’ll have a record they received the letter and signed for it. It sounds like you spent a lot of time paying off your student loans. After an experience like that, you don’t want to have to deal with greedy or dishonest collectors hounding you years down the road, and no way to prove you’re free and clear. Congratulations on finally kicking your student loan debt to the curb, Andrea! It feels awesome, doesn’t it? — Dave Ramsey

Create Reward Boxes

Lucy’s Red, White & Blueberry Trifle

Head to a dollar store and buy one small container for each child in your family. Write each child’s name on his container; if you’re crafty, decorate each container or let each child decorate his own. On slips of paper, write rewards appropriate for each child and fold and place those slips in the individual children’s containers. Your kids can help suggest rewards, but you’ll probably have to whittle the ideas down to the more simple and doable ones. Then, when one of your kids does something to deserve a special reward, haul out that box (stash them or they’ll end up with unexpected rewards added) and let your child draw out a piece of paper. Suggestions for rewards: pizza for breakfast; choose a family movie to watch; invite a friend over to spend the night. The ideas are endless and your kids will love being surprised by the rewards they get.

Fun and Easy Bookmarks

Here’s a fun project you can enjoy with your kids: making bookmarks. All you’ll need is Popsicle™ sticks, a.k.a. craft sticks, felt squares, school glue, and safety scissors. From the felt, cut flowers, bugs, monsters, or whatever inspires your kids, using different colors of felt for the parts of each creation. Glue the creations together and then glue each to one end of a craft stick. Voila! Instant bookmark! If you want to get a little fancier, you can add buttons, glitter, rhinestones, beads, etc. as well as paint the craft sticks or use a permanent marker to write names or Bible verses on them.

Chocolate Crispies

Whip up this tasty snack in a snap. You’ll need: 6 cups of Cocoa Krispies (or the generic version – it’s cheaper); 3 tbsp. of margarine or butter; 1 tbsp. of cocoa powder; & a 10-oz. bag of mini-marshmallows. Lightly grease (or spray with nonstick cooking spray) a 9x13 dish. In a Dutch oven or large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the cocoa powder and marshmallows; stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in the cereal. Once everything is thoroughly mixed, press the mixture evenly into the prepared dish. Let it cool; then cut into squares. (Tip: Spray a piece of wax paper with nonstick cooking spray and use it to press the mixture into the dish.)

Don’t Slip Up

Dollar stores are the cheapest places to pick up 60-inch rolls of non-slip shelf liner, and this stuff does far more than line shelves. Cut pieces to fit trays so you and your kids can carry and eat off trays with cups and dishes a lot more stable. Cut a piece to sit under bowls when you’re mixing anything by hand. Sure beats chasing a moving bowl across the countertop. Put pieces under pet dishes to keep pets from pushing their dishes across the floor.

Ingredients:

16 oz strawberries, sliced 8 oz blueberries 3 ¼ oz instant vanilla pudding mix 2 cups milk zest and juice of 1 orange 8 oz frozen whipped topping, defrosted 10-12 oz pound cake, cut into cubes

Preparation

Pour cold milk and pudding mix into a bowl. Beat for 2 minutes until combined. Add the orange zest and juice. Beat. Add the whipped topping to the bowl and use a spatula to gently combine. Use a clear glass bowl to layer the dessert. Create as many layers as you’d like and that your bowl will allow. I typically do 3. Start with a layer of pound cake. Top with 1/3 of the pudding mixture. Top with 1/3 of the strawberries and blueberries. Continue with another layer of cake, pudding mixture, strawberries and blueberries. Layer until all ingredients are used. Store in the refrigerator until ready to eat. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

Closing Thoughts

“Jesus replied, ‘I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty’” (John 6:35a, NLT). In this girl’s humble opinion, Jesus is saying if we know Him, we want to grow in Him, and that means to “hunger and thirst for righteousness” (Matthew 5:6, NIV). That means making Him our “daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), not an occasional snack. Daily communion with Jesus is the only way to “never be hungry again.” — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? Fall Resolutions

Time management abilities, good calendar systems, and just plain old organizing are what fall success can be for many of us. When I get a little bit of a jump on things, I am calmer and happier as these events approach. How about you? Sometimes I think New Year’s resolutions could just as easily be done as fall resolutions. Actually, change really can happen at any time. Frankly, I take comfort in that. Remembering that truth offers hope and makes me feel a little bit lighter. I would encourage you to look ahead to fall and think about adding something new—maybe a better calendar system, a plan to work out, a new hobby…Someone once said to me “When you do what you’ve always done, you get what you’ve always got.” Are you unhappy with something? There is lots of truth in that quote. Are you happy with what you are getting? Though habits and routines are helpful, sometimes it is more helpful to create new habits and routines. Ponder that for a moment. We all want a magic bullet—to lose weight, gain fortune, improve relationships, or something else. I think we can spend some time to think about and create our own magic bullet. I believe it was Ashton Kutcher who recently told a group of young people that “Success looks a lot like hard work.” There is no substitute for planned well-organized task completion to “magically” transform us from where we are to where we want to be. To get your change thought processes jump-started, here are the “standard” goal areas to consider making some improvements or resolutions:

• Relationships • Career • Finances • Personal development • Community service • Spiritual/religious • Social activities and relaxation •Exercise habits and healthy eating choices Write down what you want to achieve and how you will do it. Refer back to your notes frequently to help keep yourself on track. Make to-do lists for yourself daily and work through things one at a time. Positive changes are doable. Don’t kick yourself for bad days. Everyone has them. When you feel stressed about a life area that you have made some resolutions about, go back and check your notes. Maybe there is an activity to add under that goal area that has been tossing around in your head? Or, maybe looking at your list and activities will calm you down and remind you that you are currently doing the best you can do at this point in time, and it is time to let go of unnecessary guilt, worry thoughts, and anxieties. Still, why do some of us have success with goal setting and others less so? People who are consistently better at achieving their goals than the rest of us do this: They recognize life’s interruptions, and make contingency plans for their goals right away. For example, plan that if they miss exercising once during the week, then they will get up early on Saturday to do it. Contingency plan development at the beginning is what separates the goal achiever from the amateur goal setter.
