Back to School…Summer Memories Made The phrase “where did the summer go?” is being heard all around town. It seems like yesterday, we were preparing for finals and graduations. Summertime memories are “in the books” and it is now time to turn our focus to a new school year. While the children want summer to stretch a little longer, many parents are ready to get back on a scheduled routine. With the start of a new school year, we must prepare our minds and refresh our spirit. I pray God’s protection over our school administrators, faculty and students. As autumn peeks around the corner, we anxiously await football season as well. The fragrance of fresh-cut field grass and concession stand food will get anyone in the mood for a good game of football. I encourage each of you to support our local middle & high school as well as college football teams and pray for a safe and healthy season. We ask God to protect each player and give them the strength and fortitude to play their best. Take those summer memories and tuck them away in a special place and know that greater things are still to come as we walk daily with God and allow him to guide our every step forward. Make new friendships during this upcoming school year and be the Christian leader among your peers. It is time to go “back to school… summer memories are made”. Blessings,

Melissa K. McElroy BayAreaChristianFamily@mchsi.com

Caylin Louis Moore was a child of Compton, a city well-known for poverty, gangs, and crime. His single mother shared a bed with Moore and his two siblings. The plumbing was broken, rodents scampered behind the walls and hunger was a constant affliction. The sound of gunfire was a night- Author and Rhodes Scholar Caylin Louis Moore graduated from Texas Christian ly event and gang violence was a University where he played football. He is perpetual threat. The schools were applying to doctoral programs in sociolunderfunded, jobs were scarce, ogy with plans to become a University and a spirit of despair saturated Professor. the city. Years later, Moore became a 2017 Rhodes Scholar, doing graduate studies at the University of Oxford, Jesus College. A Dream Too Big is the story of a remarkable young man's rise from poverty and despair. Moore is a man of exceptional intelligence. He worked and studied hard, exercising intense self-discipline and dedication. But Moore's story is not about how a child of Compton rose from the ashes on his own. Time and again, Moore's climb from poverty was aided by men, women and institutions who offered not only inspiration, but also tangible assistance. The hands that reached out to him are varied. His mother, a woman of deep faith, taught him to respect himself and trust God. A sixth-grade teacher at his inner-city school took the time to point him in a new direction. The rapper Snoop Dog started the football league in which Moore excelled. A private, academically rigorous Jesuit high school offered him free tuition and a chance to play football. Colleges offered him assistance and a banker took time to mentor him. Moore did not climb out of Compton on his own. Alongside the people who directly impacted Moore is the cloud of witnesses which paved the way for his journey. Preachers and poets, athletes and activists, writers and rappers - these are the people which comprised the village of support for Moore. He was inspired by them. He was taught by them. He was supported by them. As he says in the final pages, "One must have boots in order to pull themselves up from their bootstraps." Moore knows that a concept of the gospel which is not concerned with advancing social justice, peace and the well-being of our communities is foreign to the New Testament. Jesus didn't only preach a message of spiritual salvation. He also healed people. He gave them food. He identified himself with prisoners, the poor and the outcasts. Jesus knew what it was like to be hungry, unjustly oppressed, and to live in poverty. Jesus was, and still is, a Compton man. — Darrel Holcombe

Therapeutic Riding for Children and Adults Little Red Barn is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that serves as a ministry to the community. They are a therapeutic horseback riding program which benefits children and adults of all abilities. Rebekah Sluder is the head instructor at the Little Red Barn. Starting at the age of eight, Rebekah has trained and specialized in English and western pleasure, dressage, hunter jumpers, and 3-day-eventing. Rebekah gained a passion for working with individuals with special needs when she was just 12 years old. At the age of 16, Rebekah realized that she could never live her life without her horses, as well as, live her life without putting her time into those who are in need. She decided right then and there to combine the two passions, and teach therapeutic horseback riding lessons. Rebekah was granted the opportunity, in 2013, to start Little Red Barn, and shortly after graduated with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of South Alabama. During the summer of 2014, the door was opened for Rebekah and her husband, Jesse Sluder, to purchase their own personal property where

they could offer more resources to the horses, volunteers, and clients. Little Red Barn offers horseback riding lessons to recreational, competitive, therapeutic, psychotherapy, ground lessons, educational groups. There are many benefits to therapeutic horseback riding, such as physical, psychological, educational, cognitive, and emotional healing. Little Red Bard offers horseback riding to a large range of disabilities and conditions, ADD/ADHD, Stroke patients, multiple sclerosis, down syndrome, autism, learning disabilities, emotional problems, hearing/speech/visual impairments, and the list goes on. As of today, Little Red Barn has granted this passion of recreational horseback riding to over 1000 individuals who seek help with a challenge. Aside from riding sessions, they also offer volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are required to go through training with the horses, clients, and the remainder of the team. Our volunteers can expect to be a part of changing one’s life and play around with some pretty awesome horses too! It takes a village, but God is good and continues to bless us to be a resource. When this team is asked how they do it, they simply respond by saying, “This is God’s work, we just show up.” — Little Red Barn is located in West Mobile at 830 Eliza Jordan Road North- 36608. LIFE IS NOT FAIR!

“That’s not fair”! How often have we heard that phrase spoken? It is not allowed in our family’s vocabulary, but it is often true. Take the story of Moses as an example. Remember him? The biblical character in Exodus? The one God spoke to through a burning bush? That guy. At God’s request Moses confronted the most powerful man in the world, the Egyptian Pharaoh, with an anointed stick. Then he led an entire NATION of people, out of slavery in Egypt. For a grand finale he parted a sea. What a sight that must have been. Surely, Moses received a great worldly reward for his obedience, for his efforts?! That would only be “fair” right? Keep in mind (this part is important) Moses didn’t ask for that job. He didn’t ask for the assignment that God requested him to carry out. He didn’t ask for the lack of appreciation the Israelite nation showed him for his efforts or for the difficulties he endured executing that assignment. He just obediently endured it. Day by day. Moses was obedient. He was faithful. He obeyed God, for decades, through the entire story.

task is not reserved just for the exalted among us, the powerful, the famous, the clergy, the pastors or the people you see on TV. No sir.

Moses spent over 40 years leading God’s people from bondage, through the wilderness, to their promised land. Yet in the end he was not allowed to enter the promised land with them. His earthly reward after years of obedient service was only to “see” the promised land from the top of a mountain. Then he died. Was that “fair”? Perhaps, just perhaps, the story of Moses is there to relay that very point! That life, Christian service, is sometimes not fair.

While our earthly assignments will differ greatly we do share a common denominator while on this planet, which is to “act in love”. Loving God with all our heart and loving our neighbor as ourselves. (Luke 10:27)

So, what is your point Shane? The point, the message, is this……. As Christians we are set apart as messengers of God’s grace to the world. This

Regardless of our earthly “status”, as Christians even the least of us, by worldly terms, arrives with an assignment from the Creator. The accepting part is up to us.

Unless you live alone on an island you know that to “act in love” is sometimes not so easy. There is risk! Risk of getting rejected, laughed at, taken advantage of, being hurt, even being hurt badly. The list is long. We are to do it anyway! As recipients of God’s love and forgiveness we are to be the agents of His love and forgiveness to others. Pouring out to others what He continually pours into us. Moses trusted God, obeyed God and allowed God to work through him. We are to do the same. Regardless of the outcome, fair or not. When God denied Moses entry into the promised land, after all he endured, that could certainly be looked at as “un-fair”. The results for our obedience may sometimes be no different. That is just life but remember, our ultimate reward is not of this world. Let me repeat that part, “our ultimate reward is not of this world”. Just as Moses followed God’s assignment for his life we are to follow God’s assignment for ours. Plant the seeds your are given to plant with the talent God has given you to plant them. Every day, plant the seeds. Simple as that. Leave the sorting out part to God and don’t get de-railed by the results, or lack thereof. “Fairness” is a measuring stick the world loves to use. It is not God’s. Get in the boat. Do your part. — Shane Hale Hale is a “redeemed & re-purposed professional baseball player” working as a Realtor with Bellator Real Estate & Development. Through writing he shares his faith to encourage and inspire others to seek God’s plan for their lives. Visit and subscribe to his blog at www.The1SixProject.com

With school starting back soon, here are some tips to help you and your family get ready:

Lucy’s Blue Cheese Burgers & Garlic Herb Aioli

Start a supply stash. Now’s the time to stock up

school supplies and organize a place to keep them – a designated closet shelf, for example. This way, you’re not out at 9pm rounding up the index cards your child needs for their presentation the next morning. Loading up during the pre-school sales will save you money as well as aggravation after school starts.

Stock your car.

In addition to the supplies you keep at home, fill a quart Ziploc bag with some extra supplies to store in your vehicle: pens, pencils, erasers, and other simple items your child may suddenly recall needing just as you drive onto the school grounds.

Plan those first day photo ops. You know you want

those cute “first day” pics for every school year, so go ahead now and figure out where and how you want to photograph your children. Make your “first day” posters and have them ready so you don’t run behind and miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Establish a bedtime.

If you’ve slacked off on a designated bedtime this summer, don’t wait until school starts back to reinstitute it. Getting a proper amount of sleep prepares your kids to learn better and makes it much easier to get everyone up and going in the mornings. Plus, you’ll appreciate having some quiet time for yourself before heading to bed.

Back-to-School Snack Mix. When it comes to readymade snack mixes, a lot of kids only eat a few of the things that are included. Make up your own mix with four or five of their favorite snack items, like pretzel sticks, yogurt-covered raisins, M&Ms and Cheez-Its and put it in ready-to-go snack-size Ziploc bags.

Closing thoughts.

“Teach your children…” (Deuteronomy 11:19, Douay-Rheims Bible). Whether your teaching is intentional or not, your children are constantly learning from your example. Show them what it means to live out a Christian example in all you say and do, and be particularly mindful not to have one personality for public viewing and another whenever you’re behind closed doors. To teach your faith, you have to live your faith, and that means your public persona will match your private one.

Ingredients:

BLUE CHEESE BURGERS: 2 lb ground beef chuck 4-5 oz blue cheese or Gorgonzola crumbles 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 tablespoon olive oil GARLIC HERB AIOLI: 1 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon grated garlic 1 teaspoon Italian herb blend or 1 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ½ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Preparation:

Combine ground chuck, cheese crumbles, black pepper, kosher salt and olive oil together in a bowl. Gently mix until combined. Form 5-8 patties depending on the size you’d like. Once formed, press an indentation into the center of the patty. This is to ensure it doesn’t overly puff up in the center when cooked. Grill over high heat for 5 minutes on one side then flip and cook 3-4 minutes on the other side. Top cooked burgers with Garlic Herb Aioli. Whisk together mayonnaise, garlic, herbs, lemon juice, kosher salt and black pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

“I remember wanting to fall on my knees or at least fall down, I was so excited,” Tiara Pennington said as she reflected on the moment when she was crowned the new Miss Alabama on June 8, 2019. In her unforgettable moment, Pennington shares that she felt the support of every person in the room as she cried tears of sheer joy and thankfulness.

Tiara Pennington will soon compete for the title of Miss America. The 20 year old participated for the first time in Miss Alabama in 2018 and was named first runner up. She is seen here being crowned Miss Alabama 2019!

Her Journey. A native of Helena, Ala., Pennington grew up hearing about the Miss Alabama Competition. In fact, her mother, Dedra Eastland Pennington, competed in the Miss Alabama Competition in 1985. “Ever since I was a little girl, I knew that I wanted to compete in the Miss Alabama Competition,” Pennington said. At the age of seven, she joined The Rising Star Program, a Miss Alabama mentor program. Through the program, Pennington met Scarlett Walker, Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen 2010 and sister of Miss Alabama Tiara Pennington is seen here with her parents Dedra and Don as well as extended family 2018 Callie Walker. Pennington remembers Scarlett Walker allowing after being crowned Miss Alabama 2019. Tiara considers her grandmother, Carolyn Easther to try on her crown. “I went back home and said, ‘Mom, I want land (2nd from right/front row) to be her fashion designer. to compete in Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen and then I want to compete in Miss Alabama.’ ” Crowned Miss Alabama Outstanding glory because I would not be Miss Alabama today without God. We do not Teen in 2016, Pennington competed in the Miss Alabama Competition for deserve anything; God is the one who blesses us, and I consider my role as a the first time in 2018 and placed first runner up. She went on to win the title blessing.” Pennington is a member of Hoover Church of Christ. When asked of Miss University of Alabama in November of 2018. “I have learned that what she does in her daily life to center her in her faith, Pennington said, “I regardless of whether you win the title and walk away with the crown, you are pray all of the time. I pray when I get up in the morning and when I go to gaining something out of the opportunity of just being in the moment and bed. I pray whenever I am about to speak with different people I come in representing wherever your local title is,” shares Pennington. “You never lose.” contact with. And I am even praying right now.” To strengthen her faith, Pennington reads daily devotionals from Jesus Calling by Sarah Young and has Her Faith. Pennington is a firm believer in trusting God in every area of the goal of reading the entire Bible in 2019. “I find that different books in the her life. Throughout her years of pageant competitions, she has learned a Bible speak to me in the moment and encourage me. I try to keep God first in lot about perseverance and surrendering to God’s perfect will. “I think that everything I do. All day, every day.” being a Christian has taught me how to persevere and leave everything up to God…You have to believe that God has a plan for your life, whether that is Her Voice. Pennington’s talent for the Miss America competition is vocal to become Miss Alabama or not.” Pennington credits her whole family with performance. As a young teen, Pennington followed in her mother’s path of raising her up in the church and helping her grow in her faith and staying being an R&B, soulful singer. It was not until her mother heard Pennington grounded in Christ throughout her life. “I love God and give Him all the singing along to a song from the opera show, Carmen, that they realized she

had the gift of an operatic singer. Pennington became immersed with singing during her middle school years at Helena Middle School. “I had an awesome choir director, Mr. Frank Andrews. He loved teaching music and supported me in my endeavors of being a singer.” Mr. Andrews, still the middle school choral director today, encouraged her to audition for soloist competitions including the Montgomery City Classic Vocal Competition she won in middle school. “I caught the bug and have been singing ever since.”

Giving Back. Each Miss Alabama contestant is required to pick a community service platform, known as a Social Impact Initiative. Pennington chose to raise awareness regarding psoriasis. Both Pennington’s mother and uncle suffer with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. “A lot of people think that those suffering with psoriasis can just go to CVS or Walgreens to pick up an ointment and their disease will automatically just disappear,” says Pennington adding this is not the case since psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease of the skin that has five different types. Each person that suffers with psoriasis can have different combinations, so it can quickly become a complicated disease. As a part of her “Psoriasis Take Action” platform Pennington researched volunteer opportunities for psoriasis in Alabama and hit a dead end until she connected with the National Psoriasis Foundation. She soon became one of the Foundation’s 36 community ambassadors. “It has been amazing to raise awareness here in Alabama, as well as speaking with the FDA Board of Directors about my mother’s story suffering with psoriasis and the harsh side effects from the different biologic medications that psoriasis patients have to take.” As Pennington prepares to compete for Miss America, she hopes to be a light to everyone she meets. When asked what advice she would share with anyone hoping to one day become Miss Alabama, Pennington shares, “Persevere. Keep God first. Know that God has a plan for your life…trust God because He knows what is best for your life.” She adds, “Perseverance and faith will take you further than anything in this world.”

Already in middle school Tiarra Pennington was taking the stage! A 2017 graduate of Helena High School, she served as President of the Show Choir and was named Miss — Melissa Armstrong Helena High School.

We Are Starving Our Brains and Do Not Even Realize It We are eating MAD - a Modern American Diet‌ processed foods laden with sugar, wheat and excess gluten as fillers, milk and toxins including synthetic food dyes and aluminum, used as emulsifier and preservative. Even though we eat plenty of this food, it starves our brains. First the brain quits producing insulin. Yes, our head brain as well as our pancreas creates insulin. Insulin is the hormone we create to get nutrients into our cells. Lack of insulin results in our head brain neuron support cells becoming insulin dependent where nutrients have a super hard time or simply cannot get into these cells. Consequently, these head brain cells shrivel up and die. A metabolic type of Dementia is nicknamed Diabetes III or brain diabetes. When we eat these processed foods for a period of weeks, months and years, we destroy our gut lining and send our immune system into overdrive. This leads to hyper inflammation, where good, healthy cells are gobbled up right along with the weak, damaged ones. This hyper inflammation happens in our head brain too, leading to the production of damaged cells that will not perform properly in our body, leading to disease.

Along with creating hyper inflammation, our neurotransmitters, created in our gut brain to be shot off to our head brain, become off balance, robbing our energy and negatively influencing our mood, emotion and cognition. The neurotransmitters are not effectively communicating with other systems in our body. By the way, this communication between the gut brain and the head brain is called ‘health’. And this poor communication also causes improper creation and function of our hormones‌ our sleep hormones, our digestive hormones and our excitatory hormones as well as our sexual hormones. Yes, we are mal-nourishing ourselves, starving our brains and as a result we are sickening our bodies and our brains. It starts with brain fog, no inertia, tired all the time, not able to sleep, mood disorders, memory problems, trouble focusing and leads to diabetes, depression, crones, thyroid issues and a medley of other diseases, even cancer. Science has now been able to trace Alzheimer’s and other dementias like Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s (ALS) occurring first as a gut disease.

and theories of 14MDs, PhDs and specialists from around the US in an educational program I attended on the brain/gut connection. After describing this immense problem of starvation and hyper inflammation, the prescribing conclusion was the same from all the speakers: clean up your gut. If we want our brains to enjoy full function, we must pay attention to what goes in our mouths. Instead of starving our brains, we need to provide them with a buffet of healthy nutrients. Dr. Thomas A. Sult, a family practitioner and lecturer in the Hyman Program, summed it up quite well when he said, “The best medicine always starts with a variety of foods. For a list of brain diets, visit On The Brain at www. Three Food Additives to Stay Away From There’s no question that additives and preservatives make foods taste better, but they leave our health in a truly bitter state. Be it sodium nitrate, aspartame, monosodium glutamate or high fructose corn syrup, the effects of these adversarial additives can be downright deadly. Again, the list is too numerous to mention, but here are three of the most common food additives that you need to stay away from before taking your next jaunt to the grocery store, remember to read all of the ingredients on the back of your packaging.

Sodium Nitrate

If you’ve ever had a slice of bacon, a ham sandwich, or a hot dog, sodium nitrate was chief among the ingredients used to make it. Ever notice how hot dogs seem to last forever in the fridge? This isn’t natural; this is a direct result of sodium nitrate, as the additive preserves the color – and the life – of your average frankfurter. But that’s about the only thing sodium nitrate preserves; because as studies and as a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association indicates, foods cooked under high temperatures that contain sodium nitrate develop compounds that animal studies have shown can cause cancer.

BHA and BHT

How can such small words cause such big problems? Well, firstly, they’re not words, they’re abbreviations for butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT). For whatever reason, you often see these additives together, primarily on boxes of cereal, packs of gum and vats of vegetable oil. Similar to sodium nitrate, they’re used to preserve freshness and prevent spoilage. But the only thing that goes rotten is one’s health when consuming foods that have this dastardly duo among the ingredients. Studies going back to 1974 document the negative side effects associated with them, from adversely affecting the urinary and thyroid glands, to the promotion of lung tumors.

Trans Fats

Whenever you have the entire health world – including the often lax Food and Drug Administration – recommending you avoid a food additive entirely, you know it can’t be good for you. Trans fats are essentially piranhas in today’s health society. And for good reason. Unlike some food additives that have a handful of redeeming qualities (like sugar, as we all do need some sugar for energy), trans fats have none at all. Restaurants and food companies are fast replacing their use, as they’ve been directly linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney failure, and stroke. The foods highest in trans fat are those you’re probably avoiding already, like French fries (eight grams in a medium serving), pound cake (four and a half grams in one slice), and doughnuts (five grams in one doughnut). So, are you forever tasked with reading ingredient listings? Not necessarily, so long as you stick to the all-natural section at your local grocery store. More and more of them are propping up in traditional grocery stores, so you no longer have to go to the nearest Whole Foods Market for organic products. Until Next time, Stay healthy!

Is Identity Theft Still

a

Problem Today?

This is a rational question, even if you haven’t been victimized, when you hear about a data breach or a friend tells you a story of Identity Theft, you think; am I next? Or, do I need to worry about this at all? I have enough on my plate! Right? Look at the latest numbers. Nearly 60 million Americans have been affected by identity theft, according to a 2018 online survey by The Harris Poll. That same survey indicates nearly 15 million consumers experienced identity theft in 2017.

The largest breach by Equifax, one of the three major credit reporting agencies. The number of potential victims, 147.9 million, and the kind of information exposed was significant. This included names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in a lot of cases, driver’s license numbers.

Publicly available numbers from Javelin Strategy:

Common Types of Identity Theft Are:

Number of Identity Theft Victims and Amount Stolen Year Individuals Impacted Amount Stolen 2017 16.7 Million $16.8 Billion 2016 15. $16.2 2015 13.1 $15.5 2014 12.7 $16.4 2013 13.1 $19.3 2012 12.6 $22.1

So, to answer your questions… yes, identity theft is still a problem and it won’t be going away anytime soon. Why? Data Breaches. As the News tells us many stories of identity theft, what we hear more about are Data Breaches. Company’s and organization’s customer records; which may have all your personal information, are obtained fraudulently. Identity Theft Resource Center publish summaries of U.S. data breaches, and it’s extremely important for you to know that breaches can have an impact on identity theft. In 2017, the Identity Theft Resource Center published a new record high of 1,579 data breaches, revealing more than 178 million records.

Azul Beach Resort So, it’s time to get ready for back to school, athletic practice, robotics club and our united favorite PTA meetings. Yes, we love our partners in education and watching our children grow but you just can’t help but fanaticize about your next break. Today I’d like to give you some food for thought in the shade of tranquility blue also known as Azul Beach Resorts. Let the journey begin… The Azul Beach Resort Riviera Maya is a cozy resort only 20 minutes from the Cancun airport sitting on a half mile of spotless white beach in Puerto Morelos. There perfectly appointed accommodations vary to suit the need of any family from a Deluxe room, Family suite featuring a separate living room with additional bedding, to their Presidential suite with 3 distinct sleeping areas. All guest enjoy personal concierge service, eco friendly and cultural activities for he entire family to enjoy and 24hour room service and in suite dining adventures. Don’t feel like socializing much with the newborn, stay in a swim up suite and turn on the baby monitor during nap time while you and your spouse have a dip in the lazy river at the foot of your patio steps. Situated between downtown Cancun and Playa Del Carmen is the Azul Beach Resort Riviera Cancun. This resort is a personal favorite as it’s truly family and adult friendly. It’s perfect for a Vow Renewal or family gathering as guest share the facilities but retire to two sections, one for families traveling with kids and adult only. Rooms in both sections are equally lavish and it’s nice having a gathering of generations whereby our young adult party crew isn’t next door to the cousin with the toddler. Every suite contains a whirlpool tub, separate living area and in room spacious balconies. We enjoyed my daughters 5th birthday here in a family suite as it gave us the option of closing the sliding frosted door for privacy between the double sofa bed and our king size bed. I’ll never forget the joy in her first spa day ( she still sleeps with an eye mask to this day), the surprise ballerina birthday cake the staff brought our last6:05 dinner at Siena and the attention to Azul_Ad2.pdf 1 at 7/23/19 PM detail by the staff in their care of our family. For the ultimate foodie family with thrill seekers I highly recommend the The Fives Azul Beach Resort Playa Del Carmen. This all suite resort has the largest variety of multi-room suites to accommodate your family size and need. One of their signature suite features are the Penthouse categories, which include private rooftops with family dining and living areas, BBQ grills and whirlpool tubs. Housing 13 restaurants and 9 bars, including adult only signature bars like Nineteen Ten a Mezcal and Tequila bar, no one’s palate will go neglected. C

A New Way of Looking at Old Ways of Thinking? It may seem as though everybody else always has it all together. No gaping social faults, no big physical ailments, no scandalous financial worries, no family interference, or any of the problems that may be particular to our own lives. As social creatures, we tend to think more in cyclical experiences than in linear projections, which opposes our naturally desired position of thinking that we’re the ones who know where we are going, both when and how. Join the club! Many people feel the exact same way, and some may even feel that way about you! It’s with primal instinct that we disguise our perceived frailties to be acceptable to people that we may even view as competitors. While it may feel secure as a part of self-preservation, it is simultaneously shallow and socially evasive. Internally we invent our own anxiety and unhealthy distorted thoughts that seem to drive our ability to function only on a fight or flight level. But is it real or even reasonable? Having spent a long career in a corporate setting, as well as being an avid people watcher, gains some insight into the motivations of how some people excel beyond their ability to perform. While many others continually cycle in the endless “grind” of the mundane, it becomes apparent that perception is primarily responsible for the distorted definition of excelling, or better yet the imposed definition of “success”. The best, and possibly the most compelling rationale for the opportunistic strife is the chance to find some amount of personal worth. The agonizing cries for recognition and acceptance are only symptomatic of the many different political, ethnic, and cultural interests that insist on imposing their perspective with the mere goal of validating their cause. Although bitterness abounds, it grows more vital for everyone to support a firm belief and practice of unconditional positive regard for one another.

If we decide to commit to changing the way we see our world, and become less victimized by our own lives, then we choose to be more positively congruent, and able to find a better path. Often the survival of the fittest view, “If I make you look worse, then I look better”, can begin to change to a more civil view of, “I want more for others than I want for myself ”. Proof of social strength has become largely about how loud, vulgar, and intimidating that an individual or group can force their point of view, while using the very same tactics that they accuse others of using. It is no wonder that many people have a deep-seated need to look for a way out and an innate sense of finding help from something, or someone, somewhere. The “never” comply crowd, can never manufacture peace for themselves, much less for others. Counseling offers a place to be heard, understood, and a new perspective to a very hurt world, one person at a time. If things don’t seem right in your life, then they are wrong. Wrong can only change by doing right things. Your changes start with you. — Charlie Brown Counselor at NuView Counseling, 1120 Hillcrest Road, Suite 2G, Mobile, AL, 36695, (251) 401-3560, cbrowncounselor@bellsouth.net, www.nuviewcounseling.com

RING…RING…RING… School is in Session! Now I know you have enjoyed 8-10 weeks of pure summer bliss but whether you are excited about the return of school or whether you are holding on with all of your might to these last summer days, it will be important for you to take these next few weeks to get mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for the start of a new school year. Here are a few back to school tips to help get in gear.

TIP 1: Get Back To Healthy Sleep Routines

1-2 weeks before school starts, it will be beneficial for you to start readjusting those brilliant brain cells to the sleeping routine you will need once you return to school. So start going to bed within the same hour of time you will normally go to bed once school starts and also start getting up every day about the same time you will normally get up to start your school day. Practicing this new sleep and wake up routine can be the most important change you make to help transition your brain back into school mode.

TIP 2: Get Off The Electronics

How many times have you said “I’ll Just Play One More Game or Watch One More Episode/Video” and before you realize it, hours have passed you by. Well, just like it is important to get back into your healthy sleep routines, it is just as important to get back into the habit of managing your time wisely. You can start by reducing your phone time/gaming time/video time by one hour each day until you reach the less than 2hr per day limit as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. As you start changing your habits, you will become more productive and you will also be helping your friends become more productive as well.

TIP 3: Change Your Diet To Improve Physical & Mental Health

Your summer body will receive a rude awakening if you don’t get back into school training now. We already know that chips, candy, caffeinated foods/drinks, cookies, fatty/processed foods, etc. are not the healthiest but did you know that these types of snacks are also the culprit for increased symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mood swings? So, even though these were probably your go-to snacks, go ahead and do your body and mental health some good by making your healthy food changes now.

TIP 4: Talk It Out

If you find yourself repeatedly having negative thoughts and emotions about this upcoming school year, give yourself time to process these thoughts and emotions by Talking It Out with your family and supportive friends. When talking it out, try not to “Awfulize” by grumbling and complaining about the school year. This will only stir up more intense stress and worries. Instead, choose to be more solution-focused. This positive psychology method can help to change your focus to identifying the things that worked and didn’t work this past school year so you can help create a more successful plan this year. If you continue to struggle with negative thoughts and emotions, consider talking to a counselor. This can be your School Counselor, a Psychiatrist/Psychologist, or a Licensed Professional Counselor. Counselors are great resources for learning new ways to resolve your common or complex life struggles.

TIP 5: Pull It Together

Since the school bell will be ringing soon, you can use these last tips to pull it all together. Now that you have freed up time getting off your electronics, you can use this extra time to declutter and organize your room for the new school year. Make sure to have a comfortable space (that’s not your bed) to study and to do homework. Reduce anxiety and stress by getting those new school clothes and new school supplies organized. It is also helpful to keep extra school supplies on hand for emergencies. Take the time to review your class schedule and be familiar with how you will get to homeroom and to each of your classes on time. If you are new to the school, participate in the new student orientation and share the information learned with your parents so they too can be informed. Make sure to complete your summer reading and summer math requirements. If you cannot find your requirements, contact your school or pick up a fresh copy during registration. You can also check your school’s website or even your local library for your summer reading material. As You Are Using These Tips To Help Get You Geared Up For School, Also Consider This Motivational Phrase From Benjamin Franklin…“If You Fail To Plan, Then You Plan To Fail”. So Get To Planning & Have A Successful School Year. — Veronica Davis Veronica Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addictions Therapist.
