Disciple One Another – Be a Christian Mentor As Christians, we have been called to disciple one another.

Mentoring is a form of discipleship, and you can make a real difference by choosing to mentor others of all ages, most significantly a child. Mentoring programs help youth and adults receive life-changing advice, guidance and wisdom for navigating every day challenges. Youth can gain valuable support and insight into life’s challenges as they grow, while adults can gain wisdom in areas of walking in Christ, family challenges, being financially responsible, dealing with career issues and challenges, accountability and advice in areas of strongholds and temptations, etc. Having a mentor can help eliminate the feeling to tackle life on our own. It can lead to significant change and growth in all these areas of life, and more. Whether you are interested in adult or youth mentoring, your dedication and sacrifice is a Kingdom investment that will have lasting effects for you and your mentee. I encourage you to take time from life’s busy schedule and mentor someone in need of knowing Christ. It will make a better person out of you and the one you mentor! Blessings,

Holy Yoga

Yoga is an ancient physical and mental practice which dates back thousands of years. The word yoga means “to join or yoke together” and refers to bringing the body and mind together in harmony. Yoga is a great tool for strengthening the body, improving balance and flexibility, and improving health and well-being. Research demonstrates that a regular yoga practice may produce numerous physical and mental benefits. While yoga itself does not have religious origins, other religions over the ages have incorporated yoga as part of their practice. Christians have also adapted yoga as a tool to draw us closer to God while reaping the physical and mental benefits of yoga. Among some believers, this may be a source of controversy. I once read “no religion has claim over movement and breath” and this is true. It may help to think of yoga like prayer or fasting. No religion can claim these practices as their own, but different religions may use them. It’s all about intention. God looks at the intent of our hearts, and we don’t have to feel condemned in His presence. There are 3 main components of a yoga practice—movement, breathing exercises, and meditation.

Movement:

Most people think of yoga postures, or “asanas,” when they think of yoga. Practicing yoga postures helps us develop strength, flexibility, balance and improved concentration. Yoga postures are adaptable for various physical and mental states, ages, and level of activity. The postures help us develop discipline, but are never meant to cause pain.Yoga integrates mindful awareness and breath while moving, strengthening the mind-body connection. As a Christ-follower, these practices can draw us closer to our Creator as a physical form of worship.

Breath: The breathing practices of yoga help us gain control of our respiratory process while recognizing the link between our breath, mind, and emotions. Being aware of our breath brings us into the present. We can calm our mind by slowing down our breath. Deep breathing can bring us out of “fight-or-flight” mode and into a state of relaxation. By lengthening and deepening our breath, it helps to calm and clear the mind. In a yoga practice, breathing exercises may be practiced alone, or integrated into movement.

Meditation: Meditation is an active surrender to inactivity.

It means being still and silent, not trying to control our thoughts, but being aware of them. As a Christ-follower, God calls us to “be still and know I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) Christian meditation helps clear the mental clutter, bringing us in tune to His still, small voice. Being still and silent brings awareness to His presence in our lives and community. A yoga class may include some form of meditation, or may be encouraged as a practice off your mat. There are various ways to practice meditation. Many Christians may choose to focus on scripture during meditation, or listen to worship music. There is no wrong way to “stop and be still.” Holy Yoga is a form of faith-based yoga currently offered in our community. It is designed to deepen your connection to Christ which may utilize prayer, worship music, and His Word in addition to Christ-honoring yoga practices. While Jesus was on this earth, he often took time away to be with His Father. The intention of a Holy Yoga class is to create this space to step away from your busy lives and be with God. The calm, stillness, focus, and strength gained in a regular practice extends far beyond our time on the mat. The Disruptors I sat down recently to get some work done and within an hour I had filled up a piece of paper with random thoughts that crossed my mind. None of these random thoughts were related to the real estate work I was doing. It all started when the word, “Disruptor,” crossed my radar. Unlike the other words I had read, it literally yelled at me as it went by. I stopped and wrote it down. Stopping to ponder something does very little, you can ponder something until the cows come home. The power is in “taking action”, in this case simply putting pen to paper, because that puts things in motion. Applies to so much in life. Back to that word, “Disruptor”…. The world we live in today sends us a constant message. It tells us to get along, go along, play nice, don’t offend or rock the boat. On the flip side, when it comes to our Faith, we are told something entirely and completely different. The directive is, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world”. (Romans 12:2) In short, “Disrupt” the status quo that constantly tells you to live for the now, to live for the world, and instead.... live for Christ, while you are in this world. When I began doing this several years ago, my life changed. That’s just how it works. Since making that decision, I can say from experience that daring to offer a

different, sometimes unpopular, stance in both actions and words can often take some courage. Do it anyway! Begin within yourself by choosing to be “Disruptive” to the enemy’s daily assaults on your life. Don’t take the constant attacks against you lying down, fight back. Then take a deep breath and take it a step further…. Choose to be “Disruptive” to the enemy’s work in the lives of those around you, and in this world, by sharing what God is doing in your life. Look, I am a “has been” baseball player that put my Faith, and my identity, in a game until I was 27 years old. When that era of my life ended, I put my Faith, and again my identity, in the “things” of this world. By age forty-five, they had both let me down. The change in my life happened when, out of options and at the end of myself, I finally put my Faith, and then built my new identity on an eternal foundation, in Jesus Christ. Today I am led to share God’s work, what He is doing in and through my life, with others. Simple as that. I’ll share it with basically anyone that wants to listen, and sometimes people that don’t. That simple act makes me very “Disruptive” to the enemy. So, here is the writer downer.… Choose to “Not conform any longer to the pattern of this world” in your own life and live for the eternal, not the temporary. Then choose to move beyond being a passive recipient of God’s grace and share that grace in the manner you are led to share it. Work your gift! If we choose our title, and we do choose our title, I like the title of “Disruptor “…. because it beats the socks off having to wear a t-shirt that reads “Conformer.” Get in The Boat. Do Your Part. B argai nom ic $ Who Doesn’t Need Shoe Storage? You can make a

great DIY shoe bin by using 6” PVC pipe and pipe glue. You may even be able to get your local building supply store to cut the pipe in lengths for you – 12 inches should be long enough for most shoes. Outside or on a surface you’ve covered with a dropcloth, align a row of pipe pieces as wide as you want to make your bin. Use the pipe glue to secure these sections together. Once the glue has dried, start your next room on top of that one, fitting the next row into the valleys created by the first row – you’ll be creating a honeycomb effect. Continue this for as high and long as you want the bin. When it’s finished, set it in place and load it with shoes.

Set A Timer. Telling children to “take turns” doesn’t necessarily

work. If your children or your child and a friend are arguing over a toy, set a timer on your phone and give each child a specific amount of time to play with that item. This will at least cure the fussing over who had possession the longest.

Establish a bedtime.

If you’ve slacked off on a designated bedtime this summer, don’t wait until school starts back to reinstitute it. Getting a proper amount of sleep prepares your kids to learn better and makes it much easier to get everyone up and going in the mornings. Plus, you’ll appreciate having some quiet time for yourself before heading to bed.

Homemade Salsa.

Load up on fresh tomatoes while they’re still in season and whip up this easy salsa in about 15-20 minutes (not counting tomato-dicing time). You’ll need: (1) 6 fresh tomatoes, diced (or you can substitute 2 cans of petite diced tomatoes); (2) 1 can of diced green chiles; (3) 1/3 cup of sweet onion, diced; (4) 4 tbsp. of dried cilantro; (5) 2 tbsp. of lime juice; (6) 1/3 tsp. of black pepper (fresh ground is so much tastier); (7) 1/2 tsp. of garlic powder (NOT salt); and (8) 1/4 tsp. of salt. Thoroughly blend all these ingredients and chill for at least 4 hours before serving. Store refrigerated in an airtight glass jar.

Lucy’s Mustard Baby Back Ribs Ingredients:

2 to 2 1/2 lbs Pork baby back ribs (one slab) 1 cup dijon mustard 2 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon chili powder 2 tablespoon paprika 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoon kosher salt

Preparation:

Remove membrane from the back side of the ribs. Begin by running a knife between the membrane and the rib. Using a paper towel or a kitchen towel, grip membrane and pull completely away. Combine ingredients for the rub in a small bowl and mix well. Coat the ribs evenly on both sides. Place ribs in a baking dish, cover, and store in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, up to over-night. Prepare a grill using indirect heat, meaning build coals on only one side of the grill. On the other side, place an aluminum pan filled with water. Heat grill to medium high heat. Grill is ready when coals turn white. Place ribs directly over the flame for a few minutes on each side to ensure they get a good sear and color. Transfer ribs to the other side of the grill where direct heat is not under them. Cook for 2-3 hours or until tender. If using a BBQ sauce to finish ribs with, brush on sauce a few minutes before ribs are finished cooking. Watch carefully to ensure sauce does not burn. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

Closing thoughts.

I had never really grasped the meaning of Hebrews 4:14a until I read it in the ISV (International Standard Version), and then it hit me right between the eyes: “…let us live our lives consistent with our confession of faith.” I always thought all those other translations that talked about holding fast to our “confession of faith” meant not to lose faith. Nope, this passage is telling us to be real. We can’t profess one thing and live another. We must “live our lives consistent with our confession of faith.” If you claim Jesus Christ as your Savior, walk, talk and think like it. The whole world – literally – is watching. — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? You can contact her and follow her on her website, www. HEALTHY

CUSTOMER SERVIcE

B

raxton Gilbert’s passion for fitness started at a very young age. Gilbert was 13 when he gained interest in working out. After a few months of strength building, and beginning to see the changes in his own body, Gilbert realized that this was going to be something he did for a while. Training five times each week and prepping meals ahead of time was assurance that he would make progress. Braxton Gilbert fell in love with the ability to become as strong as possible. However, he had no idea that it would lead to where he is today, providing healthy customer service. It wasn’t long after that his newfound interest of fitness landed him a job as a janitor at a local gym in town named Solid Fitness. The owner allowed him to use the gym whenever he wanted because of his position within the company. When people began asking Gilbert for help in the gym, he would just have them join him after hours to knock out long grueling workouts - just like his training! Gilbert thoroughly enjoyed working with people who were beginning their fitness journey. They were committed to working hard, and he was sure to give them the best service possible. He was learning to be a better trainer with his studies. “I got better and better at teaching fitness, as well as made efforts to wow people with my customer service! I remember thinking that it was important that not only my clients got great workouts, but also a service that was second to none”, Gilbert says.

SEcOND TO NONE! refine my craft; honestly I was blown away by the results and how I was able to help people achieve their success”, Gilbert says. The knowledge he had accumulated was part of it, but mostly the emotional learning videos he had listened to all through high school allowed him to learn how to connect with people’s deeper drive and teach them how to channel that into their daily actions. “It was so incredible to help others learn to reflect on past experiences that had shaped unhealthy behaviors in their lives now. This became less about muscles and fitness, and more about making a huge impact on the life of my client”, Gilbert says. Coming out of high school, his business was growing, and he knew that if he was going to continue to provide a great service for his clients, he needed to find a space that he could make his own. Fortunately, a car lot that was located next to his house had relocated across the bay. This now vacant 1,600 square-foot building served as the perfect space to continue serving his clients. It was in this gym that he hired his first trainer, Bryant, to help out with the growing business and its increasing demands. Braxton and Bryant spent countless hours training clients and strategizing about how to make their service the best it could possibly be. Gilbert decided that the main focus would be weight loss and health for people of all ages, and that’s what he did.

Braxton Gilbert at the age of 16 decided he would go and purchase 50 plush towels from Walmart, almost $300 worth, and he folded them along with a bottle of cold water for every client from that day forward. This, along with many other incremental improvements caused his business to flourish. Not long after that, Gilbert was able to quit his retail job along with his janitor position and focus solely on personal training with his clients full-time. “When I say it grew fast, I mean it grew FAST!” Gilbert says. Before Gilbert graduated high school, he had worked with over 1,000 people. “Each person that I worked with gave me an opportunity to learn how to

Less than one year later, Braxton Gilbert Fitness, through grace, faith and a whole lot of sweat had grown beyond measure, and many of their clients were able to boast about their weight loss of 5080lbs in just under one year. This was proof of their success! BGF’s staff had grown in knowledge, experience, and in overall numbers as he expanded to five employees. At the one year anniversary, Braxton Gilbert Fitness moved to a much larger state-of-the-art facility. The number of clients has exceeded 5,000 thus far. Braxton Gilbert Fitness is making more strides than ever in their overall service to their clients. When it comes to weight loss, the staff is able to say that they teach not only how to get there, but how to stay there. Studies will cite numbers as high as 90% for re-gaining weight. Braxton Gilbert Fitness is fighting to change those statistics by teaching successful habit changes of both eating and exercising combined. Gilbert uses the necessary software to track workouts with clients and create their next few weeks of training. Gilbert stated “our trainers are tough, but our clients seem to be tough enough to keep them in their place!” Now, seven years later, Braxton Gilbert is full of gratitude for the blessings that he and his staff have received. He gives all glory to God on providing him with the knowledge and willingness to help others in their journey to better health. No truer words spoken than the ones found in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are now your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (New International Version). When people walk thru the doors of Braxton Gilbert Fitness, they become family. As family, they lift each other up on good days and bad and continuously push each other to be their very best both inside the gym and out. Braxton Gilbert’s main focus is to provide many more years of great service and help his clients be the healthiest they can possibly be! End of Summer Cookout, Secrets to Eating Right

You’re following this column nearly every month, hopefully along with my emails and FaceBook posts giving hints and facts of what to eat or not eat to make you ‘brain smart’ and age ‘successfully’, healthily. So‌you’re feeling great. But now it’s time to go out to or host the family BBQ for Labor Day to bring summer to a close.

The centerpiece of nearly any summertime cookout spread features BBQ pork ribs or pulled pork laden with sauce loaded with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other preservative chemicals. The table will most probably feature store made potato salad or store made cole slaw, potato chips, jarred spinach dip complete with watermelon, maybe a big store box cake and/or ‘gourmet’ cookies size of mini Frisbees. Except for the watermelon, it is highly glycemic so pushing it, this table serves no brain foods. Okay, so what do you serve? Here is a short list of typical cookout foods, why they are brain bad for you complete with suggested substitutions. And that’s the secret, substitution! BBQ pork with store bought sauce Why Bad: Just read the ingredients, if you can’t pronounce or define the words, your gut and head brain can’t successfully digest the ingredients either. And when reading the ingredients, of all things

avoid HFCS and preservatives, seek all natural ingredients. I mean that is what our brain is, right, all natural. Why inject it with non natural ingredients? You don’t fill your car gas tank full of sprite. Anyway‌ Substitution: Make own dry rub or marinade from all natural ingredients, (paprika, garlic salt, onion powder, cinnamon, black pepper, cumin, allspice, oregano-make a paste with some coconut oil) keep basting or rubbing on the rub, use a catch drip pan when cooking and serve with aus jus after draining off some of fat, no commercial sauce needed!

Store Potato Salad Why Bad: White potato is one of 5 White Brain Damaging foods we talked about in May. Find the article in my blog on my website. Plus, what is that white stuff? Substitution: Sweet potatoes cut into chunks with skin on, doused in olive oil, with slices of apples (soak first in real lemon juice so they will not turn brown), raisins and throw in some roasted nuts. Chips Why Bad: Again, white potato problem but double damage because it is cooked in hydrogenated omega 6 bad fat. Over time, omega 6 oils cause hyper inflammation in your brain, killing brain cells. Substitution: If needing a base for a dip try sliced cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash as crackers.

Jarred Spinach Dip: Why Bad: There is nothing natural in that jar of spinach dip. Substitution: Make your own spinach dip with drained and thawed once frozen box of spinach and homemade mayo. Dave Says

Dear Dave, I’ve got about $3,000 in credit card debt. Would it be a good idea to transfer the balance from my credit card to another one that has a much lower interest rate? — Tammi Dear Tammi, Lots of people who find themselves in your shoes make the switch to low-interest rate credit cards. A lower interest rate will help you save a little money in the short-term, but the drawback is it can also make you feel like you’ve addressed your problem with debt when you really haven’t. You’ve got to change the behavior and the mindset that put you in that situation in the first place. Besides, most low-interest, or no-interest, credit card offers are only good for a short period of time. There’s always a catch! I discovered long ago that personal finance is only about 20 percent head knowledge and 80 percent behavior. Emotion is a key element to getting out of debt and staying out of debt. You’ve got to get really mad at debt, the impact it has on your financial life, and attack it with a vengeance. Think about how many times debt has been a negative influence on your life. My guess is there were many occasions in the past when you could have done great stuff—I’m talking about meaningful, important things—if you hadn’t had to send a bunch of money to those bozos at the credit card company every month. I want you to really think about it.

Dear Dave, What exactly is unsecured debt, and how is it different from secured debt? — Rich Dear Rich, “Unsecured” debt generally means someone loaned you money, but they don’t have a lien on anything. Credit cards and student loans are examples of unsecured debt, because there’s nothing they can directly repossess if the borrower doesn’t pay. However, they can sue you if you don’t pay, and get a lien against something after they sue you. In some cases, this is done against your income by garnishing your wages. Some examples of “secured” debt would be things like a home mortgage or car loan. A home mortgage loan is secured by the home. If you don’t pay, they can foreclose and take the house. The same is true with a car loan. If you don’t make the payments, they can take the car. Typically, unsecured debts will be the last debts you pay if you’re in financial trouble. You’d make the car payment before paying on your student loan, and you’d make your house payment before paying on a credit card. Hope this helps, Rich! — Dave Ramsey

How about this? First, cut up your credit card and close the account. Then, sell some stuff and take a part-time job nights or weekends for just a little while. You could wipe out all your debt in less than a year by doing that and starting to live on a strict, written, monthly budget. If you don’t get mad about it and take a stand against debt, and become determined you’re never going to fall into that trap again, you’re liable to find yourself back in the same situation or worse! — Dave Ramsey

Diabetes and B-Vitamins

It has been clearly shown that adding B-Vitamins to one’s diet improves the condition of the Diabetic, with usually a definite reduction in the hyperglycemia, was soon noted when these products were first made available to the physician. The probability of an etiologic relationship between Vitamin B deficiency and diabetes was suggested in the 1923 article – “The Systemic Causes of Dental Caries” before mentioned. The present opinion is best stated in the words of Stepp et al.“…The close relation of the Vitamin B1 to carbohydrate metabolism has stimulated the use of it in the therapy of diabetes mellitus. The hyperglycemia and glycosuria –reducing effect of peroral yeast administration have been known a long time and in animal experimentation, at least, assured beyond objection (Beckel et al). Twenty years ago v.Euler and Svanberg established the antidiabetic effect of yeast extracts, and that has also been observed in man. It has been submitted that daily doses of dry yeast (10 to 30 gm.) in cases of diabetes of medium grade may entirely or partially replace Insulin (Vogt, Hoepfner-Klotz, Melcer, Mansberg, Winter – Smith).v. Driglaski alone failed with yeast with his diabetics. The reason may be found in the length of time he used the yeast (eleven days), while Melcer, Gringoire et al insist on giving it for six to eight weeks before success may be expected. The effect lasts much longer than that of Insulin. One might explain that with the necessity of refilling the depleted vitamins and minerals which are the most important aspect. Further investigation is necessary. Whether the Insulin-like substance of the yeast (v.Euler) is determined so far with certainty. In pigeon beriberi almost constantly a rise of blood sugar and blood lactic acid is found, which is removed by B1 (and allegedly by Insulin). On the other hand, as has been mentioned, the point of attack of

Vitamin B1 in the sugar economy is entirely different from that of Insulin. That does not speak against the possibility of an Insulin – like effect of Vitamin B1 since we know that the radiation products of ergosterin (Vitamin D and A. D. 10) may entirely replace the parathyroid hormone, however, different their working mechanism may be. Clinical trials with crystallized Vitamin B1 have not shown any positive results so far. However pure B-1 has proven to be strongly effective in diabetes. While Stepp failed to influence the blood sugar in health and diabetes, Williams and coworkers have reported frank successes with large doses of pure Vitamin B1 in diabetes. It is evident that dosage plays a considerable role. Further investigations in this direction are urgently desired, because of the possibility that we may possess in Vitamin B1 for the first time a true and physiologically vital peroral antidiabeticum in an isolated and chemically homogeneous form. Since thyroxin increases the need of Vitamin B1, as mentioned, the danger of symptoms arising from Vitamin B1 deficiency in hyperthyroidism is real. Care is therefore necessary to procure an adequate supply of Vitamin B1 (besides Vitamin A).” So for anyone out there reading this that may have Diabetes Type 1 or 2, taking your B Vitamins primarily in a B-complex form can certainly be most advantages to you and your condition. EQUIFAX 2017 DATA BREACH: Settlement Information Nearly half of all Americans were affected by the 2017 Equifax data breach, in which hackers stole personal data for over 147 million people: credit card numbers, SSN and other identifying information. As part of a settlement agreement with the FTC, theft victims file a claim receive benefits of up to 10 years of free credit monitoring, or cash payment of up to $125 if you decide not to enroll because you already have credit monitoring. The consumer may also claim actual damages, limited to $20,000 per person. • Because Equifax mishandled the original breach, we do not recommend that victims rely on their continued credit monitoring. Rather, we recommend that victims get a comprehensive identity monitoring and protection plan, then follow the steps to seek the $125 payout, and any actual damages they may be entitled to. • Remember, credit monitoring alone does not afford you the full protections available. Your compromised information, including as little as a name, address, and date of birth, can be packaged and traded on the dark web and used to impersonate your identity. Only comprehensive monitoring, beyond just credit, will keep you alerted to a range of threats. • Consumers should do their research; however, IDShield offers one of the most comprehensive, best-in-class monitoring

POTENTIAL RESPONSE: “I don’t need IDShield because I have credit monitoring from Equifax.” COUNTER-RESPONSE: The stolen data is now out there- forever. This information can be sold on the Dark Web and Deep Web, which is why monitoring these areas is mandatory. IDShield includes Dark Web and Deep Web monitoring. Credit monitoring alone is insufficient. In addition to credit information that was stolen, driver’s license numbers were exposed. Public and court record monitoring is a necessity if individuals are to know if their identity has been associated with a wide range of other suspicious activities. IDShield includes public and court record monitoring. In addition to traditional credit information being exposed, along with their Personal Identifiable Information (PII), thieves can use consumers’ information in non-traditional outlets including pay day loans, auto/title pawn, rent-to-own outlets, enhanced sub-prime loans/lenders, etc. IDShield includes High Risk Transaction Monitoring. Bankruptcy: The Kindest Thing You Can Do For Yourself

Most people are terrified when they think of bankruptcy. They think that bankruptcy will make an already bad situation even worse. You know that feeling: Your bills are piling up. You are wondering if you can possibly get the money to pay them — and that feeling multiplies when your car breaks down. That feeling is so paralyzing that it stops people from taking rational steps: They will do anything to just make that feeling go away. For some people, this means ignoring the problem entirely. They stop paying their bills, and the mail piles up, as do the unanswered calls from collection agencies.

More often than not, people facing financial problems worry so much that they cannot focus on the solutions in front of them. There is so much emotion packed into that awful feeling that it can be difficult to be clear-headed and strategic about financial problems. Eventually, most people check out. They start tossing the letters in the trash and burying their head in the sand. They do not want to feel that awful feeling, so they do not think about it. They cannot plan for the future because they are scared to think about the future. Here is the truth: If your bills are piling up, and you have that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach every time you think of your finances, bankruptcy might be the kindest thing you can do for yourself. It will give

you an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start over. Your pile of unopened bills will shrink, you won’t have to send all those calls to voicemail, and you will feel peaceful and calm. Bankruptcy might feel embarrassing, but every single person in society — from the entry-level administrative person to the CEO to the NFL player — has made bad financial decisions. Some of these decisions are followed by a stroke of luck that allow people to recover, but others do not allow for recovery. This is where bankruptcy comes into play. From the beginning of time, civilized governments have acknowledged the frequency and impact of financial misfortunes, and they have always created laws to help people recover. In ancient times, all debt was forgiven every seven years. Today, our government intentionally created bankruptcy laws to give people who have struggled another opportunity. In fact, I do not believe that you will need to recover from bankruptcy. Rather, you can recover through bankruptcy. Declaring bankruptcy is not for everyone — and I will be the first to tell you if bankruptcy is not for you. But if you are a candidate for bankruptcy, it might be the smartest financial decision you can make. This might come as a surprise. After all, isn’t bankruptcy the last option? Won’t it make your financial future even worse? Not at all. No. If you are struggling with your finances, and you do not have an immediate and solid plan for finding financial relief, you will continue to struggle in the coming years, maybe even decades. As you fight to stay afloat, that feeling of dread will intensify, and your financial situation will continue to erode. Your credit score will shrink. Your debt will grow. And that feeling will not go away. Your financial stress will take over your life. Instead of focusing on your family, your friends, your career, or your hobbies, you will spend most of your time worrying about money. Bankruptcy sounds bad, but in reality, people who have declared bankruptcy say that it was their lifeline. When you start over and declare bankruptcy, that feeling in the pit of your stomach goes away. You can finally start saving money. You can pay your bills on time. What’s more, you can breathe a sigh of relief. You will feel peaceful, clear-headed, and worry-free for the first time in a long while. You can stop feeling sick every time you receive a collection letter. You can finally start focusing on your family, your friends, your career, and your hobbies. And in 12 to 24 months, guess what? You will have a terrific credit score. I know that sounds impossible, but I have seen it happen over and over. Most people think they will suffer in the years following a bankruptcy, but that isn’t true. If you take the proper steps of filing bankruptcy, do your research, and know about the process, declaring bankruptcy could very well end up being the best thing that happened to you. — Angela M Cooper Disclaimer: We are a debt relief agency. Before We Say “I DO” It’s that time of the year where we all rise and gaze at those beautiful blushing brides cascading down flowery peddled aisles and dapper grooms standing at the alter anticipating the official reveal of their bride. After all of the months or years of planning, the time has finally arrived for the loving couple to publically profess their love and commitment to one another…. It’s Their Wedding Day. May through October is peak wedding season, so by now, you have probably showered many happy couples with romantic well wishes and have adorned them with elaborate wedding gifts. But when you take the time to think about it, how many couples are actually prepared for one of the biggest commitments of their lives? How many are actually mentally, emotionally, and spiritually prepared for marriage? According to the statistics, not very many couples are prepared to create a loving marriage that is as beautiful and enduring as their wedding day and that can evolve continuously throughout the coming years. Although America’s divorce rate has decreased, it is still pretty high at about 41% and the divorce rate gets even higher with subsequent marriages. According to the American Community Survey (2017), we in Alabama have the 2nd highest divorce rate in the country with Arkansas (ranked #1) and Kentucky (ranked #3). Now there are many variables that can contribute to a happy vs unhappy marriage. Unfortunately, many newlywed couples enter marriage attempting to use their “romantic love” as their only guide to navigate through common marital challenges. Far too many times, newlyweds find themselves blindsided and unprepared when facing challenges such as: communication, financial differences, trust issues, implied marital expectations, conflict resolution, power struggles, intimacy difficulties, and cultural differences. So how can loving couples better prepare themselves for the type of marriage they desire to have even before they commit to saying…”I Do”? By participating in Pre-marital Counseling, of course. If the research states that couples who actively participate in premarital counseling can reduce divorce by a whopping 50%, then why do couples tend to opt out or overlook this valuable marital resource? My guess is that couples may have a perception that counseling is for the troubled marriages or that couples may simply be unaware of the rich benefits pre-marital counseling has to offer. So therefore, it is important for couples to be educated on how pre-marital counseling can actually benefit their marital relationship. It is recommended that a couple begins premarital

counseling As Soon As Possible. So when you start fantasizing about your proposal and your wedding themes, this is also the time to start talking about setting your appointments for your pre-marital counseling sessions. Now I know in the State of Alabama the laws have recently changed from the traditional marriage license to the newly notarized marriage forms which may or may not change how you choose to plan for your wedding. But, remember, it does not matter when you plan to marry or whether you choose to have a wedding ceremony. What is most important is that counseling be included in your First discussions about marriage. Licensed Professional Counselors (such as myself), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Workers and Licensed Pastoral Counselors, are the therapeutic professionals that provide pre-marital counseling services. Scheduling sessions can be as simple as identifying the therapist you would like to see and then simply call and schedule an appointment. Check with your insurance company to find out your payment responsibility, but most often your payment is your typical co-pay for doctor visits or specialist visits. Now please be advised that you may feel a little nervous when you first begin your pre-marital counseling sessions, but as you gain more awareness and practice the relationship building skills, you will easily see your relationship strengthening and improving. Here are a few benefits of pre-marital counseling: • Learning how to transition from dating roles to spousal roles. • Advanced communication and listening skills. Problem solving, negotiation, and accountability skills. • Understanding what is means to compromise. • How to protect your marital covenant from outside influences (including family). • Creating your financial system. • And of course, Understanding intimacy… Not just sex. • Another benefit of premarital counseling is that before you financially and emotionally invest in the idea of getting married, you will have the opportunity to

recognize if you and your partner are a good fit for marriage. As you can see, there are many benefits and relationship building skills to address before your big wedding day. Giving yourselves time to explore these subject and many other subjects will help the two of you gain a deeper understanding of one another and teach you valuable partnership skills as you prepare for your nuptials. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I work with couples who are building their relationship skills in many stages of marriage. Some are pre-engagement, pre-wedding/early marriage, and some couples have been married years before they choose to begin counseling. In addition to my work with marital couples, I also counsel couples who are in the process of divorce which comes with a new set of guidelines and relational expectations especially when children are involved. It is important to know that counseling can help you navigate through all of the many changes in your marital relationship. So now as we quickly approach this holiday season, are wedding bells in your near future? Then, before you say “I DO” and before you begin to romantically plan your wedding day, take the time to begin Planning Your Marriage... See You In Counseling. — Veronica Davis Veronica Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addictions Therapist.
