FROM THE PUBLISHER

Be Thankful...Give Thanks! November is one of my favorite months of the year and I am certain many of you will agree. The air is cooler, the leaves are changing colors, the fragrance of turkey and dressing permeate the kitchen (or down here in the South the wonderful smell of fried turkeys on the back porch) and time is spent with family and friends during the long holiday weekend. Your home is probably the same as mine on Thanksgiving Day. Once the meal has been devoured, the men proceed to the couch to watch football and the women gather in the kitchen to clean dishes. The children race in and out of the house and laughter fills the air. As Christians, we have so much to be thankful for - family, friends and good health to name a few.

I am truly thankful to the many dedicated readers of this “Good News” Christian magazine each month. I absolutely love hearing the wonderful responses from many of you. If you are reading Bay Area Christian Family for the first time, I thank you for choosing to wrap your hands around something so positive and uplifting. I am confident that you will read every page and anxiously await the next month’s issue to arrive. I am most thankful to the advertisers that have chosen to reach such a strong “faith-filled” market. Be Thankful...Give Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

In our daily walk with God, we must be thankful for all that He provides to us and for us. In turn we must be willing to give thanks to Him. This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to place a piece of paper at each place setting and ask family and friends to jot down one thing that they are thankful for. Have one person collect these and read each one aloud. You will find that there are countless blessings to be shared.

Blessings,

—Melissa K. McElroy BayAreaChristianFamily@mchsi.com

A Thanksgiving Message from Alabama Teen Challenge The Proven Cure for the Drug Epidemic presented by Alabama Teen Challenge Adult Men’s and Women’s Centers

A Special Messsage From the Desk of Robert Angles, Executive Director, Alabama Teen Challenge

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to embrace the words of the Apostle Paul that he spoke to the Philippian Christians. He said, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and petition, with THANKSGIVING, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-9

The staff and the students of the Alabama Teen Challenge ministry are truly thankful for all of you who help with the process of transforming lives with the proven cure for the drug epidemic. We are humbled by your generosity and we pray that the Lord continues to meet all of your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. (Hebrews 6:10) We have a pressing need right now for monetary donations, and we ask that you consider including Alabama Teen Challenge in your year-end giving. If

you are 701/2 years old or older, we would also ask that you consider donating your RMD tax-free to Alabama Teen Challenge in 2017. A donation counts as your required minimum distribution, but does not increase your adjusted gross income. If the Lord enables you to do so, your donations will provide a much appreciated blessing to Alabama Teen Challenge. Thank you for considering this request and for all that you mean to this vital work of the Lord. — Robert Angles Executive Director, Alabama Teen Challenge, Adult Men’s and Women’s Centers 205-763-0909, P.O Box 270, Lincoln, AL 35096, www.alatc.org

“Too many young people have already lost their lives, and too many others have suffered serious injury for us to ignore the problems. Programs such as Teen Challenge work to change people’s lives by changing their hearts. Let us bring to all Americans who struggle with drug addiction this hope: The miracle of recovery is possible, and it could be you.” President George W. Bush

When I heard this phrase it made a lot of sense“I don’t have trouble with what I don’t understand from the Bible – what I have trouble with is what I DO understand.” As parents, sometimes we forget the basics God wants us to know and do. We worry about how we look, how we dress, and how others perceive us. However, I have never read in the Bible any command to buy a bigger house, drive a better car or wear nicer clothes. What we ARE reminded of repeatedly is building strong character, having good morals and ethics, developing decision-making skills, choosing our friends wisely, and being honest. I think you get the point! You and I need to do a regular check-up regarding where our focus is, and in turn what we are teaching our children to be focused on. Great homes fall, money can be lost, and clothes will deteriorate – but Godly character, strong values, and good decision making skills will, literally, last a lifetime. What are you focused on today? Better yet, what are your children focused on? Don’t let the simplicity of Proverbs 22:6 escape us. Training is a consistent, daily process. May we build champions for Christ today!

Trees for Hope Local Mobile business owners, Eric Ludgate of EnSec Pest and Lawn, Jimmy Dietz of Air of Excellence and Dr. Christopher Mullenix of Mobile Oral Surgery are leaders in their communities, committed to serving those in need. When they learned how Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries (ABCH) is serving children and families from hard places, and has been for 126 years, their personal faith drove them to seek an opportunity to join their efforts to help those in need. Eric and Jimmy are excited to announce the very first Trees for Hope Gala, benefitting ABCH, will be held on Tuesday, November 28 at Dauphin Way Baptist Church and is being presented by Dr. Christopher Mullenix. In helping to encourage community involvement by providing this unique opportunity to help others in need, Dr. Mullenix shares, “During the holidays, our existing support agencies and network of charities have a difficult time meeting the needs of Alabama’s less fortunate children and families. By sponsoring the Trees for Hope dinner and auction, I can be a part of a unique and rewarding way for Alabamians to give to those less fortunate.” Trees for Hope will be a fun and enjoyable evening of heavy hors d’oeuvres, fine coffees and desserts, and will provide attendees the opportunity to browse dozens of beautifully decorated trees and wreaths ranging from the elegant to the whimsical, all of which will be up for grabs to the highest bidder. Some trees expected to be available for auction include a nautical theme, Alabama and Auburn football themes, and more. Along with the Trees for Hope silent auction, attendees are invited to partake in a live auction too, where you can bid on anything from weekend getaways, a golf outing at the number one ranked course in Alabama, and unique dining and culinary experiences, to fun activities for the whole family and valuable household services. Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries has championed the statewide cause of needy, neglected, and dependent children since the late 1800s. Tens of thousands of children and their families have received food, shelter, love, comfort and spiritual guidance under the Christian direction of dedicated men and women for 126 years, with the core commitment being to love children and youth and to point them always in the direction of Jesus Christ. Proceeds from the gala will help ABCH as they continue their every day mission to protect, nurture, and restore children and families through Christ-centered services. — For tickets or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Josh Farmer at 251-463-8280 or jfarmer@alabamachild.org.

The Untouchable, Touched by Jesus One of my favorite biblical accounts is recorded in Luke 5:12-14 in which Jesus heals a man with a serious medical condition. Luke, a physician, described the man as one “full of leprosy,” meaning it was in an advanced stage. In Jesus day, this infectious disease made one religiously and socially unclean. Lepers were ostracized and quarantined from society. No one wanted them around. They were considered the “untouchables.” Leprosy was debilitating and caused one to feel helpless and hopeless. The leper was at a point of despair with no place to go and no one to turn to; until he saw Jesus. Apparently, the leper had heard about Jesus and had faith that Jesus could do for him what others could not. Luke records that when the leper saw Jesus, he fell on his face in worship and implored Him saying, “Lord, if you are willing, You can make me clean.” What Jesus did next just blows me away. Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing, be cleansed.” You were not supposed to touch a leper! Jesus didn’t have to touch him. He could just have said the word and the leper would have been healed. Yet, He touched this “untouchable!”

You see there is no sin too bad; no person too evil; no problem too big; no sickness so severe; and no one beyond God’s reach. If you will come to Jesus in faith, submitting to His will; He will touch you and make you whole. I’m reminded of the Bill Gaither song, “He Touched Me.” It says, “shackled by a heavy burden; beneath a load of guilt and shame; then the hand of Jesus touched me; and now I am no longer the same.” I pray that Jesus has touched your life and made you clean and whole.

How Much Time to Clear Family Clutter? Maybe Less than You Think Time, time, time, never enough time: When we are “trapped” inside due to chilly weather, we might have more time to focus on our indoor spaces yet we may feel other time constraints pressing upon us too. Either way, please consider using a timer for the following clutter tasks to reduce your pre-holiday stress! When you can change your space, you can change your perspective, and that will change your life. Work with the mundane to find the extraordinary. Try timing yourself as you clear clutter in the following areas. Seriously. As little as ten or fifteen minutes in these spots will help.

Kitchen: As the holiday feasting gears up, spend fifteen minutes tossing expired and marginal food and almost-used-up condiments in the refrigerator and freezer and wiping down the shelves and compartments--including the ones in the door! Set a kitchen timer. Could you do this in fifteen minutes? It may take a little longer, but you will be pleasantly surprised with what you accomplish.

Wardrobe: Perhaps we have purchased new clothing for the holidays and/

or helped ourselves at the fall sales. Time to weed out the closet! If you didn’t wear it last fall and haven’t worn it yet this fall, maybe it is time to donate it? In ten or fifteen minutes, you could go through a drawer or a section of hanging items and pull out and donate things you won’t wear (be honest with yourself). When you get up in the morning, wouldn’t it be happier to face a closet full of friends (clothing you like, fits, and is in style) rather than having to hunt for friends mixed in with strangers (stuff you haven’t worn in a long time) and enemies (stuff that is the wrong size, dated, worn out, out of style, or needs repair)?

Entryway: This area, where you are always coming and going, sets the tone

for how you feel every time you return home. Road salt, sand and winter grime accumulate here. Remove clutter from this spot and organize the remaining items you need to have in this space. Make sure summer shoes and toys are stored elsewhere for now and that the entry only stores what you need every day. Take fifteen minutes to clean this area. Wash a few coats and jackets too—remembering to check pockets first. The entryway can smell fresh and look welcoming for YOU!

Lucy’s Rosemary Pork Tenderloin with Honey Pumpkin Glaze Ingredients 1 pork tenderloin (1.5-2 lbs) 3 tablespoon olive oil 3 tablespoon dijon mustard 2 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Preparation

Living/Family Room: This is your haven. Sweep visually through this room clockwise. Pretend you are a visitor. What clutter has accumulated here? Is there a pile of newspapers or magazines, or extra pillows or blankets? Too many knick-knacks can create the appearance of chaos or visual clutter. Are there items that belong in other places of your home? Decorate simply here. Less is more--more peace and tranquility. Spend ten minutes to cull out and straighten things. Bedroom: Same ideas as the living room. This is the last room you see

each night and the first room you see every morning! Keep it simple and uncluttered so it can help make you feel peaceful! How many throw pillows do you want to deal with everyday when you make your bed? How much stuff do you want to dust around on dresser tops? Consider baskets, bowls, or trays for things you want to leave out so they are visually grouped together and it is easier to move them when it is time to clean. Spend a few minutes tackling any clutter you see.

Final Thought: Last year’s New Year’s Resolutions: How did they workout for you? Be kind to yourself! You deserve a peaceful more clutter-free life, but don’t beat yourself up about it. You deserve to be gentle with yourself. I believe in you! If, like me, you haven’t been on track with your New Year’s Resolutions, simply decide to recommit to them. You can recommit as many times per week or day or hour as you need to achieve your goals. We all get off task. We all can continue to put ourselves back on course, as many times as needed. Yes, you can do this! — Barbara Tako Barbara is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. minutes or in the refrigerator up to 24 hours. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Remove tenderloin from marinade and place on a sheet pan. Cook for 25-30 minutes, until internal temperature reaches 145 degrees. Remove from oven and brush on glaze. Allow tenderloin to rest 5-10 minutes before slicing. For the Honey Pumpkin Glaze, whisk together pumpkin, honey, salt and cayenne in a small sauce pot over low heat. Once combined remove from heat and set aside. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

Doing the

Most Good, for the

Most People, in the

Most Need CALLED BY GOD to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as an officer of The Salvation Army. I BIND MYSELF TO HIM IN THIS SOLEMN COVENANT: to love and serve him supremely all my days, to live to win souls and make their salvation the first purpose of my life, to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unlovable, and befriend those who have no friends, to maintain the doctrines and principles of The Salvation Army, and, by God’s grace to prove myself a worthy officer. It has been 20 years since Majors Thomas and Jennifer Richmond signed this Covenant promising to live their lives serving God and others as Salvation Army Officers. However, this was not the beginning of their service to God and others. Jennifer, was brought up in the Methodist Church, and knew nothing of The Salvation Army until she met Thomas, a 5th generation Salvationist dating back to the 1880’s. Thomas and Jennifer met in 1979 while they were on a band trip in Hawaii and it was love at first sight! The Richmond’s have been married for 37 years and have been blessed by God with three amazing sons, three wonderful “daughters in love”, and three fantastic grandchildren. While the Richmond’s were destined to marry and join the ministry, the calling to the ministry with The Salvation Army didn’t come for Thomas until 16 years into his marriage. Before being called to The Salvation Army, Thomas was a police officer both in Brunswick, Georgia and Loudonville, Ohio. As a police officer he held many positions and performed many tasks. He was assigned to the Canine Unit, did a stint as an undercover officer, served on the Dive and Rescue Team, was the lead on hostage negotiations, and probably the most difficult was his time on the Child Abuse Investigative division. “One night after a particularly gruesome day, I fell to my knees and began to pray. That’s when the most amazing awaking came to me, and I knew from that moment on I needed to devote my life to God. When I returned home that night I told my wife about my awakening and that I listened to my calling and was ready to devote my life to God… and my wife’s reaction was beautiful,” recalls Thomas, “she said ‘I have been waiting for you.’” It was at that moment, Thomas and Jennifer answered their calling to serve God and those in need by becoming Salvation Army Officers, and both remember it being the easiest decision they have ever made. “When asked why we do what we do, simply put, it is because we have been called by God… Years ago I used to look for the bad in people, now I celebrate the good” says Major Richmond, “This is our life’s mission.” Since becoming Officers with The Salvation Army the Richmond’s have served at commands in Kentucky, Georgia, West Virginia, South Carolina and are now here in Coastal Alabama. During these twenty years in ministry they have pastored three churches, directed two resident Summer Camps, directed three Boys & Girls Clubs, sat on the Divisional Board as Youth Leaders, and served as Area Commanders in two Commands— all with a smile on their faces and a song in their heart.

One of their assignments that was particularly rewarding was their 9 years spent as Camp Administrators in Georgia and West Virginia. The Salvation Army camp programs offer something that many children at the lowest socioeconomic levels would never be able to experience. It offers them the opportunity to get away and just be a kid. “There is truly no way to describe the feeling of watching a child let go of all worry, insecurities, and other problems they face on a daily basis and just be a kid.” Explains Major Thomas Richmond. Like the military, Salvation Army Officers are moved around the country to different commands and services. In April of each year, The Salvation Army issues what is called “Farewell Orders”. This is when officers learn if they will be transferred or are staying in their present command. While not a steadfast rule the typical Salvation Army assignment last three years, sometimes more, sometimes less. This past April, both Majors Mark and Susan Brown and Majors Thomas and Jennifer Richmond received those orders. And on June 18th Majors Brown left for Dallas and just two short days later Majors Richmond arrived in Mobile where they were assigned to be the Area Commanders for The Salvation Army Coastal Alabama. Since their arrival Majors Richmond have hit the ground running, bringing with them new and exciting ideas to the Coastal Alabama Community. “What a joy it has been for us to be here in Mobile during this amazing time for ministry!” Major Thomas Richmond said, “As the Area Commanders here we are privileged to work with men, women, and children needing a safe place to heal and grow into the person God has created them to be.” The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama has more addiction

recovery and related residential social services than any other community of this size in the United States. There is seldom a night that goes by where we have less than 150 men, women, and children sleeping under our roof and this number swells to well over 200 on extreme weather nights. We have one of the only State certified residential alcohol and drug addiction programs in Coastal Alabama. We also have one of the only emergency family shelters for homeless families in the county, The Family Haven, welcoming co-parent and single parent families with children as well as boys over the age of 12. “We have been so blessed to be surrounded and welcomed by such a wonderful community. From the staff working tirelessly to meet the needs of everyone coming through our doors, to the volunteers and donors overwhelming generosity doing all they can to help their neighbor, and to all those who turn to us in their greatest time of need. It is truly evident that coming here we didn’t just join a community, we became a part of a family here in Mobile.” Said Major Jennifer Richmond. — The Salvation Army, Coastal Alabama Area Command 1009 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36604 251-459-6144

101 Mobility: Improving Lives in Our Community Birmingham Christian Family recently sat down with 101 Mobility of Alabama’s Derek Gann who shared with us how God is using his team to serve others in our community. Q. How does owning 101 Mobility allow you to live out your faith in the marketplace? A. As business owners, our main objective is to serve: to serve our customers, community and our employees. My wife Ashley and I believe that emulating the traits of Christ is our greatest earthly calling. From owning a business, to leading my family, and rearing our children, it all points to Jesus. Because 101 Mobility focuses on improving life, what a ministry! We get the opportunity to help people navigate through a difficult and often fragile time. When families and individuals are faced with circumstances that are often beyond their control whether it’s the reality of aging parents, a tragic accident that claims one’s mobility, or a family member with a disability it is easy to feel discouraged or broken. That’s the beauty of Jesus and what we get to do as owners of 101 Mobility. We get to be a part of restoring others. We can bring back some hope and dignity. We make the days ahead easier than the days before. 101 Mobility provides mobility devices to help individuals regain that independence. We help families live longer in their homes and provide free face to face consultations that help guide customers through all their options and what works best for their needs.

“To Care for Those Who Came Before Us Is One of the Highest Honors.” - Tia Walker

Owners of 101 Mobility Alabama, Derek and Ashley Gann, with their children Reagan and D.C. at their 101 Mobility office on Highway 280 near Greystone.

Q. How does your faith impact how you run your business? A. Simply put, our faith drives us. Each day we remind ourselves that all that we do on this side of eternity should all point to the greatness of Jesus. Even leading up to the decision to become business owners, every day was filled with prayer. We asked for wisdom, discernment and direction. Ashley and I feel that God has led us to right where we are and we must be faithful stewards of what we’ve been given. We think the greatest leader of all time is Jesus and we try daily to replicate those traits. Our faith doesn’t mean our business is void of difficult decisions or tough calls, but our faith guides us and reassures us of our purpose. We strongly believe that you have to have vision and our vision is to love our customers well, build strong community relationships, and provide top-notch service. These goals are all predicated on our faith and our hope to be a glimmer of light in what can be a dimmer time in one’s life. Q. What is the most rewarding aspect of the business to you? A. No question, the most rewarding aspect of our business is being able to give someone a new lease on life. No one wants to wake up and discover they can no longer walk up their stairs or get around their house like they used to. So, when 101 Mobility can design a plan, unique to your needs, that gives you that freedom and independence back, it fills our heart and reminds us that each time a job is done, we’ve left one life a little better. The greatest gifts in life are truly the ones we give, not the ones we get. We are blessed to provide mobility devices that give back joy, that give back freedom, that give back hope. The stories we hear from the customers we serve can often leave tears in our own eyes, so being able to restore something that has been lost is the greatest reward of all. Q. During holiday times, what solutions does 101 Mobility offer in terms of accommodating visiting family and friends who may have mobility challenges? A. 101 Mobility can provide solutions for mobility needs for anyone, anywhere. Are you hosting family for the holidays who may need mobility assistance? We have a rental program where we can supply chair lifts, scooters, or ramps to accommodate their needs. We will give you a free consultation and identify exactly what you need and design a plan that suits your needs. We will bring in the equipment, install, and remove. How to Check on Their (or Your) Cognition

Going to spend time with parents and grandparents this Thanksgiving? Take this extended visit as an opportunity to seriously observe the cognition of your aging parents. While you are helping with the turkey, setting the table or coordinating the group touch football game, pay attention to your loved one(s). The main question: how is their brain health—their cognition? Look for their consistent ability to focus and be organized with their thoughts and actions. Are their impulses and emotions normal? How is their sense of reasoning and judgment? How is their vocabulary? How is their word flow? Can they find words easily? Do these words come smoothly and succinctly? What about their memory? When we think of dementia and Alzheimer’s, we immediately think of loss of memory. Remember, Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia, dementia is a disease; dementia is not part of normal aging, it is a disease which kills a hunk of brain cells in a particular section of our brain over a short amount of time causing our cognizance to fall, in other words, our brain to mal-function. What is short amount of time? Five to 10 to 15 years is pretty short when you are in your 60s, 70s or 80s. Lack of memory is usually a symptom which surfaces after dementia has begun, occurring usually 1/3 through the progression stages. Other prioritized characteristics to look for when checking or analyzing cognition levels: Senses. Was the turkey dinner good? Sense of smell is usually one of the first to go with dementia, specifically Alzheimer’s. Do they crave salt and sugar? At the start of Alzheimer’s, the brain has trouble recognizing these tastes thus they crave more. What about their personality? Any significant changes? And their impulses and emotions? All in check? How about a cognition check list you could print, cut out, fold and place in your wallet for ease in review prior to your next visit with your parents or dear loved one. Or you may just want to have it to check yourself! Because when two or more of these symptoms on the list rear up, cognition is impaired. Prevention and stabilization actions need to be taken. Be a member of the Brain Health Revolution and during the month of November, I will email you this cognition check list. Being a member is free, sign up by going to my web site, www.TheBrainNerd.com. As a member I will email you a couple of times a month tips and tools to help you have good brain health. I won’t wear out your inbox nor spam you. As you are making turkey salad and organizing the leftovers, think about your analysis. If you find the cognition of your parents, grandparents or a deal loved one is a bit off, there is hope. There is no magic pill to cure dementia but there are ‘magic’ or specific, unique ways to prevent dementia and even reverse it once it starts. Yes, early onset dementia can be stopped and prevented from progressing. Through this column, speaking to groups, through my 5 booklet series IT’S THERE! 5 Simple Ways to Find Your Memory and Keep It, found at www.TheBrfainNerd.com and through this website, I give you ways. Being thankful for our cognizance and the opportunity to help others keep theirs, may you enjoy Thanksgiving. Here’s to your good brain health!. — Janet Rich Pittman Dementia Administrator, Practitioner, and Prevention Specialist www.TheBrainNerd.com

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: Old School Pullovers

I was 13-years old the first time I ever joined a gym. Well, technically it was a spa. That’s what you had back then...spas. It was basically a chrome-plated gym. One of the first exercises anyone ever taught me was a dumbbell pullover. Over the years I learned several variations of the pullover and each one came with a different opinion. Some guys would say, “I love this exercise. It is great for your chest!” The next guy would show you the same exercise and swear it worked “lats” and a 3rd would say I do these for my “abs”. So after over 40-years of training/studying, and earning the title of “Fitness Expert”, I can tell you that they were all correct. The pullover is one of the truly great upper body exercises. These days it is not only one of the most misunderstood exercises it is also under utilized. Some people will call this an “old school exercise”. Call it what you want, but for a single exercise it packs a lot bang. One of the reasons that this exercise is so confusing is because it comes in so many variations. For resistance you can use a single dumbbell, a pair of dumbbells, a barbell, ez-curl bar or even a cable machine. It can be done on or across a flat bench or using a decline bench. For brevity’s sake I’m going to show you one of the most popular versions that was used by the greats like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Old school, remember? I like this version because it also becomes a bit of a core exercise. I plan to do several detailed videos on all of the variations and you can check those out on our website JasonsFitness.com.

A.

• Lie perpendicular on a flat bench, with only your shoulders supported. • Your feet should be flat on the floor and about shoulder width apart. • Your head and neck should hang over the bench. • Your hips should ideally be at a slightly lower than your shoulders. • Grasp the dumbbells with your hands crossed in a diamond shape using your thumbs and index fingers with palms toward the ceiling. • The movement starts with the dumbbell over your chest, elbows slightly bent. Try and maintain the same arm position throughout the movement. • Take in a deep breath and slowly lower the weight backward over your head slow and deliberately until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. • The weight travels in an arc-like motion toward the floor. • Exhale and pull the dumbbell back over your chest. Pause and repeat.

B. Tips:

• Keep your reps high 12-20. • Start with a light weight. • If you feel an impingement in your shoulders try using a pair of dumbbells. Some people find this version more comfortable on their joints. — Jason S. Greene E-mail your question to Jason@JasonsFitness.com You can see this exercise and many others demonstrated at www.southfit.com! What is the Deal?

It seems every time I turn on the T.V., I am bombarded with commercials for personal injury lawyers, including my own. Decades ago, attorneys were prohibited from advertising what services they offered. Those prohibitions were later lifted due to constitutional free speech protection. Various State Bar organizations then sought to set restrictions on the content of attorney advertising to try to maintain dignity and respect for the profession. Likewise, some restrictions on attorney advertising have been deemed unconstitutional restrictions on commercial free speech. As a result, attorneys now seem completely free to say whatever, regardless of the impact it might have on the profession, their clients and how injury claims are perceived overall. Although there are specific rules governing attorney advertising (Rules7.1-7.6, Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct), and lawyers are prohibited from producing advertisements that are false or misleading, some attorneys appear free to produce advertising that not only might lack in taste and decorum but also might include information which requires close examination of the fine print disclaimers within each advertisement. “The Hypothetical Law Firm of Tasteless, Cheesy and Billboard has recovered tens of millions of dollars for its clients,” may be a good example. No

two cases are identical and a settlement or judgment for one client has absolutely no bearing on what any other client may recover. How and why are lawyers then able to run such ads? The answer is in the disclaimer in the small print you might see in those commercials. Those disclaimers basically tell viewers not to rely on statements about past financial results because they likely have no relationship to any future results. “If you have been hurt, call me right now!” says some hypothetical lawyer on T.V. A client calls and asks for that lawyer, but is transferred to an “intake representative” whom some might consider to be more of a telemarketer. That intake representative then sends an “investigator” to the home of the victim. The investigator is not a lawyer and is unable to offer any legal advice. Their job may simply be to go in to a house with an unsigned contract and come out with a signed one. In that respect, some might consider that investigator to be more of a “door to door salesman.” In my firm, I have always been mindful of the above. I have never advertised a past verdict or settlement amount because some may feel that doing so is misleading. When someone calls my office and wants to speak with me, I personally return their call. If that client wants to meet with me, they can. I have often thought if a lawyer is too busy to speak or meet with a client about their case, they might be too busy to aggressively pursue that case.

Practicing personal injury law for me is about helping people. It is about providing a service I take pride in and utilizes experiences, knowledge, skills and certain arts I personally developed over decades. Based on that, if a client expresses confidence in me by seeking me out to represent them with regard to their matter, I at least give them the professional courtesy and respect of personally considering their matter for representation, provided it is within my practice areas. If it is not, I would still use my best efforts to refer them to an attorney I have confidence in who might be able to help. The practice of personal injury law has become increasingly competitive. The vast majority of lawyers who represent accident victims are truly dedicated to personally helping their clients. When considering hiring a lawyer for injuries suffered as a result of someone else’s negligence, seek out the attorney you have the most confidence in and who you believe a jury would have respect for. After all, potential jurors see the same advertisements potential clients do and that could very well have an impact on what recovery you may ultimately obtain. — David J. Budgeting for November In November, we travel and we eat. We shop for Christmas gifts, and we eat some more.

Pet Boarding

The best way to enjoy this time of year, and not lose control of your money, is to make a budget for the month’s special costs. With that in mind, here are some budget items to be ready for in November:

Holiday Travel

Cookware

Are you hosting Thanksgiving Day dinner for your family, or bringing your favorite side dish to a potluck? Either way, you’ll need pots, pans, and casserole dishes. Cookware discounts can be as high as 80 percent in November, so it’s a great month to budget for them if you need to add or replace an item in your collection.

Just because you got an invitation to Aunt Elizabeth’s fancy Thanksgiving dinner two states away doesn’t mean Fido did. If your pet isn’t making the trip with you, make sure to budget for boarding fees. Plane tickets and hotel rooms aren’t the only travel costs to account for this time of year. Snacks at the airport, Uber or cab rides, parking garages, tips, and extra gas money are some of the smaller expenses that can slip under your radar.

Christmas Decorations

You’re probably excited to string up lights as soon as you’re done eating turkey on November 26th. If you’re also in the mood to buy a peppermint scented candle or a new Christmas wreath, make sure to set aside money to pay for it.

Higher Utility Costs

Low temps mean high heating bills. Keep your budget from getting burned by increasing the amount you plan to pay for electric or gas heating. Remember, when you make a plan for your money each month you’ll have more peace of mind. And who doesn’t want to enjoy their turkey in peace? — Dave Ramsey

—Used with permission from DaveRamsey.com Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 12 million listeners each week on 575 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Follow Dave on the web at daveramsey.com and on Twitter at @DaveRamsey.

Higher Food Costs

Plan your Thanksgiving recipes ahead of time, so you can wow friends and family with your cooking (and budgeting) abilities. If you’re hosting out-oftown family for more than a day, you’ll want to budget even more for extra meals and restaurant visits.

Shopping

The last weekend of November is when you’ll find all the big, crazy sales. Set aside some money so you can take advantage of the great Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts on things like clothes, televisions, and other technology.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS IN STYLE. UNFORGETTABLE CHRISTMAS GIFTS.
