FROM THE PUBLISHER A Savior Has Been Born The holiday season is in full swing. Everyone is frantically shopping for those last minute gifts, homes are decorated and signs of Christmas are everywhere. This is the time of year where we must take time out of our busy schedules and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Can you imagine? A simple manger filled with straw, the fragrance of animals all around and a cold night in Bethlehem. This was a night that would change the world forever. A young woman traveling by donkey in her final stages of pregnancy. A pregnancy created by God who sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to find Mary, the chosen virgin that would give birth to a son, named Jesus. He would be called the Son of the Most High. Mary was pledged to marry Joseph, and they were on a journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. There was no room for them in the inn and Mary knew it was time, and Joseph found shelter for Mary to rest. The story of Jesus’ birth is such a vivid image in all our minds as Christians. A baby born in a manger
surrounded by animals, shepherds, angels and wise men. What an awesome sight to behold! Christmas is a day to reflect on all the blessings God has bestowed upon us. It is a day that we can spend with family and friends and share gifts of love. I’m certain many of you have Christmas traditions in your household. One of my favorites is listening to my father read Luke 2: 120 from the Bible prior to opening gifts. As I listen to the story of baby Jesus, I am reminded of how blessed we truly are as Christians. “A Savior Has Been Born”…Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill to all men. I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and pray for your safe travels wherever they may take you during this season. Blessings,

DAY THREE
“God is up to something” is a phrase very familiar to Christians. It stirs something on the inside with a great anticipation of just what is about to take place. Before Day Three officially came into existence, Amy Dunnam was enjoying a solo ministry while Scott Washam and Bo Sullivan were members of Azalea City quartet. While continuing their respective ministries, the three began to sing together a few songs. What the three didn’t realize at the time was that God was orchestrating a ministry that would later become the Amy Dunnam Trio. After some time passed, the three decided it was time for a new seed to plant. Refusing to rely on past successes, awards and accolades, they started the process or rebranding the group with a new identity – Day Three. “The number three is significant in the bible such as the resurrection of Christ, but we took our name from creation day. On day three, God prepared the ground to take new seed bearing growth. This is our mission – new growth. Day Three’s unique blends of music genres, arrangement styling and clean vocals have made them one of the region’s top ministries in a short time. They are enjoying national recognition as well, including their first Singing News Top 80 charting song, “Might Go Home Today”, written by Sylvia Green. The Mobile based trio was also nominated for SGNScoops Magazine Diamond Award for Sonrise Trio of the Year, after being on the road only 6 months. As with any ministry, Day Three has overcome challenges and dark days to continue doing what God has called them to do. Amy is an 11-year cancer survivor (Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), in which she endured six months of Chemotherapy. Each member works a full-time job along with ministry and scheduling days off to coincide with ministry travel poses the greatest challenge. But each will tell you, “It’s worth it!”
E ncou r ag i ng W or d Is the Lord your Shepherd?
A shepherd and his sheep have a very close relationship. The shepherd is responsible for his sheep. He provides for them by meeting their needs of food, water and rest. He protects them since they cannot defend themselves. He leads and directs them on the path and to the place he has for them. According to John 10, we learn some things about the special relationship between the shepherd and the sheep. John 10:3 says that the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and he leads them. In John 10:11 it says the shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. What do we learn about the sheep? John 10:14 says the sheep know the shepherd and he knows them. John 10:3 says the sheep hear the voice of the shepherd. In John 10:4,5 it says the sheep follow the shepherd as he goes before them. The sheep will not follow a stranger. The sheep learn to trust the shepherd.
The group described a prayer breakfast at the Alabama Quartet Convention under the teaching of Jonathan Goodwin that resonated deeply. “Jonathan brought a unique point that many artists need to hear – many get caught up in the ‘glory’ of number one songs, the big busses, big stages and CD sales, etc. and focus on this as success. Many artists will never have these but they can have something so much better – the anointing! Jonathan related the story of David the shepherd boy that God chose above all the other older, more experienced brothers. You see David had a heart God could use. When Samuel, the prophet raised the horn above the heads of the older brothers, no oil flowed. But when it came time for David, the oil started flowing. You see the point is this… once you have the oil (anointing), you’re on your way! The group shares, “Since the start of Day Three, it seems God has poured out His blessing upon us and the most common remark we hear is ‘there is something different about ya’ll!’. They take the remark as an answer to prayer. “We never wanted to be just another singing group! We have prayed, fasted and sought God’s blessing to anoint us and to help us grow together as a ministry. A concert with the anointed trio, Day Three, is a moving experience for attendees. Amy, Bo and Scott all agree and states, “It is our job to deliver the real message that Heaven is real, God is love, but Hell is just as real and salvation is free! — For more information about Day Three, you can visit their website at www.day3trio.com or search them on facebook @day3trio.
Psalm 23 points out that we need to make sure that the Lord Jesus is our shepherd. Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd…” This emphasizes a close, personal relationship. Romans 10:9 says that we need to confess Jesus as Lord of our life. As sheep, we must know the shepherd. Not just “know about” Him, but know Him! (Philippians 3:10) We must listen (hear the voice) of the shepherd. We need to follow (obey) the shepherd and trust Him completely. Jesus, the good shepherd has laid down His life for us, His sheep (John 10:11). I encourage you to make sure that the Lord is your Shepherd! Fast and Fabulous Lemon Pie
The easiest and most delicious pie you’ll ever make! You’ll need: (A) a graham cracker pie crust; (B) an 8-ounce package of cream cheese; (C) a 14-oz. can of sweetened condensed milk; and (C) 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Set the cream cheese out to soften. In a mixing bowl, blend it with the sweetened condensed milk until smooth. Add the lemon juice and mix thoroughly. Pour into the pie crust and chill until set. Serve as is or top each slice with a dollop of whipped topping. Substitute lime juice for the lemon juice to make a “key” lime pie.
Don’t Take “No” for an Answer
I recently found a $350 music system with recording capability on sale on a website for $88. Since this store had several locations near me, I began contacting them to see if I could find it nearby rather than having it shipped. Each store I called responded differently. One said it wasn’t in stock. One said it was on sale for $100 off. A third location said they had it in stock, but wouldn’t honor the online price. Instead of giving up, I called the last store again, and this time asked for the manager. She told me she’d be happy to honor the online price and even had one held until I could get there to pick it up. It pays to be persistent. Don’t accept your first “no” as the final answer.
Closing Thoughts
“Mary has made the right choice” (Jesus speaking, Luke 10:42, HCSB). In Luke 10 we read about one of Jesus’ visits to the home of His dear friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. While Martha worked like a madwoman, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His teaching. Martha interrupted the lesson, saying, “Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand” (verse 40). Stressed out over little things, Martha failed to see the big thing: an opportunity to spend time with Jesus. Don’t miss out on what’s important because you’re tied up with secondary issues. Your home doesn’t have to be perfect for holiday guests – just welcoming.

The award-winning men’s a cappella chorus, Voices of the South, will perform their 18th annual Christmas show, “Christmas at the Lyric, “December 9 at 7 p.m. As the name reflects, the performance will be at the beautifully restored downtown Birmingham Lyric Theatre and will include a wide variety of great Christmas music. A part of the Barbershop Harmony Society, Voices of the South, is dedicated to preserving a style of music that is original to the United States. “Barbershop harmony today is not your grandfather’s barbershop,” Chapter President Ed Wharton says. “We do a wide variety of music ranging from the old classic ‘Shine on Me’ to the more recent Leonard Cohen tune ‘Hallelujah’, and all of it is sung in four-part harmony. At their most recent district contest in October, Voices of the South placed first in their plateau/division and received the distinction of “Most Improved Chorus.” In addition to performing at events and competitions throughout the year, Voices of the South supports Wings of Hope Pediatric Foundation, a local charity providing assistance to parents who have terminally ill children. This year’s Christmas performance will include a special guest appearance by the Iron City Singers, founded on two principles: singing quality choral music at a high level of artistry, and performing as a close-knit community of singers who care about one another. This talented ensemble is composed of singers who have previously performed together at the high school, collegiate, church, and professional levels, and is made up completely of volunteers. Three years ago, I remodeled my house. I started in the attic and worked my way down through two levels, room by room. I started on Memorial Day and ended around Labor Day. Tackling unfamiliar tasks and watching each room change into something new and fresh was a great adventure. It was hard work and took lots of time, but it was one of the best summers I’ve ever had.
Transforming tired houses into welcoming homes is what Chip and Joanna Gaines do, and for them it isn’t just a job. It is a calling, a way of making the world a better place. Capital Gaines (Thomas Nelson/Hardcover $24.99) is Chip’s story. It is an honest and fun account of mistakes made and blessings received. Interwoven into the remarkable success of the Gaines’ Magnolia enterprises and their “Fixer Upper” television series on HGTV, is Chip Gaines’ deep love for family and a strong faith in God’s leadership. Capital Gaines is about being brave and following God’s leading, even when it’s risky. It’s about finding beauty in places others overlook and being passionate and determined when the going gets tough. Chip believes that businesses and families are gifts from God. We should be good stewards of those gifts by working hard, having faith, and learning as much as we can. Chip urges us to find our calling, then do our best and trust God for the rest. — Darrel Holcombe

How to Reduce Holiday Clutter I have been thinking about change lately—lasting, successful change. At the same time, I watch the holidays and their annual stress and hectic energy approach. It is not rational for me to hang onto annual thoughts and behaviors and expect change—in the form of a more peaceful and joyous holiday season, to magically happen. The holiday changes can reflect the changes to my life in recent years and my desire to make the holidays match those life changes better. Here is what I want to do: Fewer holiday decorations—I have undecorated my home inside and outside over the years, and I like it. I can decorate more simply for the holidays too. If it is too fussy, I don’t display it indoors, and I don’t need to put up as many decorations outside either. Less unhealthy baking—I have been keeping more healthful but less food around my home these days. I don’t want to relapse just because of the holidays. I will make a few traditional cookies, but I won’t create a situation where I have a lot of leftovers. Less elaborate cooking—In my day-today cooking, I don’t do as many side dishes as I used to do. Fewer items on the holiday table, items that others bring over, and even buying some pre-made items are all fair choices to put less focus on the food aspect of the holiday meal and more focus on the togetherness of the meal. Fewer presents—The older I get, the more I realize there is no thing I can buy that will provide true happiness. Besides, the kids are older now and it brings more pleasure just to enjoy being together rather than focusing on the gift exchanges. With several of my friends, we agree that the get-together is the gift to each other and skip the exchange of holiday and birthday presents. No mindless tasks—For several years, I have been only cleaning the main floor when I have company because that is the only floor we will use. In the past, I have spent a lot on wrapping paper and time hunched over wrapping presents. I now favor reusable gift bags that require less time and are less wasteful than wrapping paper. Smart time choices—I do better with time management including less television and more interactive fun instead. With holiday time management,
I don’t want to overbook and schedule too many planned activities and events. Instead, I would like to protect time—to have less hustle and hassle, and more quiet time. De-cluttered homes look at least as clean as dust-free homes do in my observation anyway. Keeping annual notes for the holidays continues to be helpful. Annually, I write down what I bake, what I make for food, and what presents I buy for which people in my life. I will take a quiet moment to review those notes and begin to make notes for this year’s plan. It is fun to look back over the years in the holiday folder to see how our holidays have gradually evolved as our lives have evolved. As we work on de-cluttering our homes and our lives, we can also simplify our holidays. I find more holiday joy and less holiday stress when my holiday celebrations evolve to match my changing life circumstances. I wish you a peaceful and joyous holiday season. — Barbara Tako Barbara is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. According to Duck Dynasty stars Korie and Willie Robertson, 100,000 children currently in the foster care system in the United States are adoptable because their parents’ rights have been terminated. Statistically, 30,000 of those children will never get a “forever family.” The couple has been passionate about adoption since high school and has welcomed three different youth into their home since 2001—an infant, a foreign exchange student and an older child from foster care. In honor of National Adoption Awareness Month, Korie reflects on the beauty of an intentionally large family, the need for adoptive families in the United States, and the re-release of her book Strong and Kind, with added material in honor of newest family member Rowdy, officially adopted last year at 12 years old. Growing up in a family that made hospitality a priority gave Korie a clear model of the kind of mother she wanted to be when she had a home of her own. During her childhood, her parents hosted more than 80 people who needed a temporary place to live. “We had an extra bedroom that was always full,” she remembers. “They took in families, teenagers that were struggling at home, or single mothers with kids. That really impacted me—to say what’s mine is yours, and if I have an extra room, then someone can have it.” Korie’s first exposure to the adoption process came from her high school Bible teacher, who adopted a little boy her senior year and spent much of instruction time talking about how important it is that Christian families care for orphans. She married Willie in 1992, and after John Luke and Sadie were born, becoming pregnant a third time proved difficult. They took it as a sign that it was time to adopt. Five-week-old Will was living with a foster family in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when they brought him home in December 2001. In January, Willie surprised Korie with a 10-year wedding anniversary trip to Cancun. She came back pregnant with Bella. “I had two babies on my hip for a while, and it was a lot of fun,” Korie remembers. “It was a little crazy because of Destructo 1 and Destructo 2. They got into everything.” The next invitation the Robertsons extended to a youth in need of a home was to a foreign exchange student. Sixteen-year-old Rebecca came from Taiwan for one year of high school in 2005. Korie and Willie invited her back the following year, and she never left. Now 28 years old, she had Willie walk her down the aisle at her wedding last year. “Her dad passed away when she was 11, but she still has a mom in Taiwan,” Korie explains. “Her mom was at the wedding, and we sat beside each other as mothers of the bride. So, we are her American family. We never officially adopted her, but she’s ours just like the rest.”
In the new content in her re-release of Strong and Kind: And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed (Thomas Nelson, 2017), Korie Robertson shares how a missed flight to Birmingham and the adoption of son, Rowdy, reminded her that “God’s plans for us are greater than we could ever imagine.”

In 2015, Korie had just published the book Strong and Kind and was speaking at an adoption fundraiser when presented with the opportunity to provide a permanent home for an older child from Texas foster care. Familiar with the struggles older children often have finding a home, a woman approached her at the event and asked if she knew of anyone who would take a 12-year-old boy. “We hadn’t really planned on adopting again, but we’ve always remained open to God’s tugging on our heart. It was one of those moments that I thought, ‘Alright, God. This is probably us. I called Willie and he said, ‘Why not? We can do this. Why not us?’ We got Rowdy a few weeks later, and he became ours last September officially. He makes six.” Korie explains that bringing an older child into the home and adjusting him to sibling relationships had its challenges but also its rewards. “It’s been incredible to see how our other children have responded to him and accepted him and loved him. At one point Will looked at me and said, ‘Mom, have you noticed that me and Bella don’t fight anymore?’ It was like we all had a greater purpose and

everyone just stepped up to the plate.” Rowdy had been raised an only child, and Korie admits that looking back she realizes the transition he had to make—into a family of brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents—was monumental. “There was a point where I asked him, was it harder or easier than you thought it was going to be? I said you can be honest. He said it was harder.” After 11 seasons on A&E, the final episode of Duck Dynasty aired in April 2017. Today Korie continues to work in the Duck Commander® business overseeing licensing for the family’s brands and does philanthropic work as a board member for The Congressional Coalition for Adoption Institute and Help One Now, an organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty and providing care for orphans worldwide. Korie and Willie also founded the Drive Adoption fund at last year’s Duck Commander 500 NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway. DriveAdoption.org gives fans the opportunity to learn about domestic and international adoption, connect with adoptive organizations, and donate financially to the cause. Korie regularly speaks on behalf of older children waiting to be adopted and says youth who turn 18 and age out of foster care are at a much higher risk for homelessness, early pregnancy or drug addiction than those who gain the support of a family. She stresses that for all the wealth in the United States, finding a home for the 100,000 foster youth currently available for adoption should be simple. “We should be able to have homes for those children. They

are going to bed each night thinking, ‘Am I going to get a mom and dad? Is this going to happen for me?’ There’s a lot of problems in the world that I know I cannot fix. This is one of the problems that is really solvable,” she says. “A lot of people are scared of what it looks like bringing in an older child and how the rest of the children will react. God doesn’t give us a spirit of fear but one of power that He will take care of our needs. Not that it’s going to be perfect or simple, but raising children biologically isn’t perfect or simple either.” Adopting Rowdy inspired Korie to rerelease a paperback edition of Strong and Kind this year, with additional content reflecting on the legacy she wants to pass down to the next generation. The Afterward is a nod to Rowdy’s assimilation into the Robertson family and how adoption is symbolic to the Christian faith. “I have always loved everything about adoption,” she writes. “How it makes families whole; how it is full of hope and promises to love a child forever and always… how it redeems something broken and makes it whole; how it reminds us that we all are adopted as sons and daughters into God’s family through His Son, Jesus Christ…how it has made our family complete.” — Camille Smith Platt

Dave Says
Dear Dave, I’ve been trying to save cash to buy a home, but things always seem to come up that eat away at my savings. I have $130,000 set aside, plus an emergency fund, and I make $120,000 a year. I’m debt-free and renting right now, but eventually I’d like to buy a house in the $300,000 range. I really hate the idea of owing the bank money, so would you advise continuing to save and pay cash, or is it okay to make a big down payment and take out a small mortgage? — Megan Dear Megan, I love your idea, but right now you have more of a dream than a plan. You’ll need $170,000 to go from $130,000 in savings to $300,000, right? So, let’s start planning. If you save $60,000 a year, it would take you a little less than three years to get there. If you set aside $40,000 a year, it would take a little more than four years. A little division — just divide $170,000 by the amount you want to save each year — and you’ve got the beginnings of plan. A dream is a good place to start, but I want you to develop this into a plan that focuses on a goal. Break this down, and figure out how to achieve it. I see three ways to achieve this home ownership goal. One, you do the long division math and save like crazy for however many years it takes to save up $170,000. The second is to put $130,000 down on a $300,000 home, and take out a $170,000, 15-year fixed rate mortgage. This is the only kind of debt I don’t beat up people for having. The good news is, with your income, you could probably pay it off in half that time. A third possibility is to buy a $130,000 house. Write a check for nice, modest home now, and in five years — saving wildly the whole time, since you’ll have

no house payments — move up and pay cash for a $300,000 home. If I’m in your shoes, that’s what I’m doing! — Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ve noticed that the younger you are, the less expensive life insurance can be. I’m 32, and I’m still paying off my student loans. With this in mind, what’s the best age to get term life insurance, and what does it cover? — Kalina Dear Kalina, Simply put, term life insurance covers death. Having student loans doesn’t really matter when it comes to life insurance, either. If you have a family – or someone who is dependent on your income – you need 10 to 12 times your yearly income in a good, level term insurance policy. If you make $50,000 a year, that means you need a term life insurance policy with $500,000 to $600,000 worth of coverage. If you don’t have a family or dependents, I’d recommend a simple burial policy of $10,000 to $20,000 to cover any final expenses. Either of these would be very inexpensive for someone your age. Keep in mind that life insurance becomes costlier as you get older. The reason? Statistically speaking, the older you are the more likely you are to die. It’s not a fun thought, but it’s the truth. Life insurance, or at least a burial policy if you’re single and have no dependents, isn’t one of the Baby Steps in my plan. But in your case, it’s a go-get-itnow adult responsibility kind of thing! — Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. How to Avoid Junk Food & Sugar This Holiday Season (and most importantly, Why) Chatting with your neighbor by the Christmas hor d’ouevre table laden with plenty of eggnog, cookies and cakes, you learn Sally Smith has been taken to the dementia unit. “I’ll do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen to me,” you state as you pop a decorated bon bon into your mouth. Let’s talk about “do anything” because when I see such a culinary display, the words from CEO and founder of Global Healing Center, Dr. Edward Group begin to ring. “When we look at every single disease and cancer and try and find the root cause”, he states, “...we found that every single disease, including Alzheimer’s, everything happens with a toxic intake of different types of chemicals. And ultimately those enter through the gut… too many chemicals and toxins coming into the body and not enough coming out of the body.” With a primary education in chemistry and then trained as a cardiologist, Dr. Group has spent nearly his entire career analyzing what each of his individual patients are putting into their bodies. “With Alzheimer’s we cannot go straight to the brain. “continues Dr. Group. “I trace it back to the damage of the gut lining and also the liver. The gut and the brain work together. Once the gut becomes ruined and leaky, you start having all these chemicals and toxins leak into the bloodstream, the next part it goes to the liver. The liver becomes toxic and overworked and congested. These are the two things that have to happen first before Alzheimer’s or dementia starts to come into effect. “ Hmmm, so what do we do so not to overwork and congest the liver and not damage the gut? Avoid eating/inhaling toxins and chemicals. If the foods we are eating are not natural they are processed and therefore saturated with toxic chemicals and preservatives. Avoid all processed foods. Ideally, grow your own foods, contract with a butcher for your meats. Of course, that is just not available to most of us so rule of thumb…buy from a local farmer’s market. Forced to procure from a grocery? Shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. Go into the aisles only for mustard, honey, nuts, grains and seeds. Shoot for organic and non GMO foods. Read the ingredient label of everything you buy! If you cannot pronounce the word, your gut nor your liver nor your brain knows what to do with the chemical. With Christmas party after party leading up to large meals around Christmas Day and New Year’s… how can you avoid putting processed foods into your mouth? Start by avoiding the 5 White Foods…white flour, white rice, white corn (it is white in each kernel plus 92%+ of all corn is GMOed anyway), white potatoes, white sugar. These are processed foundational foods where other types of foods are added to make casseroles, dips, chips, crackers, etc. To give flavor and make them stick together, colorings and flavor enhancers’ are added along with more chemicals and toxins for preservatives. Begin to do anything. At this year’s Christmas party, eat before you go and plan on not eating once you are there. If you must, seek the plain veggies and fruits. “You will never get dementia, Alzheimer’s”, chimes Dr. Group, “as long as you continuously eat a healthy organic diet and you keep your liver clean and gut healthy”. May the words of Dr. Group ring for you this Christmas and throughout the New Year as give yourself the present of good nutrition which leads to good health. — Janet Rich Pittman Dementia Administrator, Practitioner, and Prevention Specialist www.TheBrainNerd.com

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: I Want To Feel Good! Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
That may sum up America’s whole health crisis. You folks have got to start stirring! In the past few years I have had both hips replaced, torn two pec muscles and an achilles tendon. I have also finally reached a point where I can say I am over fifty, without feeling nauseated. I turned 50-years old a six years ago and I have since been subjected to all of the usual “over the hill jokes”. So what is the difference between me, and the typical fifty something residing in the state of Alabama? I want to feel good! I don’t mean I want to feel not sick. I mean, I want to feel good. You see I know the difference, because generally speaking. I feel good. Heck, I would go as far as to say I usually feel great. The problem with most people is they haven’t felt good since they were a teenager, and the way things are going with our youth today most kids will not feel good by the time they are in middle school. The problem with not feeling good, like many things in life, is that it kind of sneaks up on you. You go from running around, having fun, your body doing anything you ask of it, to sitting on the couch wishing you could just walk around the block without passing out. Even if you don’t feel good and you have forgotten what if feels like to feel good I bet you have at least one friend, family worker or co-worker who like me, loves to exercise and in your opinion is nuts. Well guess what, people like me, are absolutely sure that you are the one who is slap nuts. Why? Because we feel good! In the spirit of Christmas here is a list of why exercise makes us feel so good. I recommend you check this list not once, not twice, but thrice! 1) It increases energy, increases self-esteem and increases mental focus. 2) Decreases risk of a heart attack. 3) Decreases risk of osteoporosis. 4) Reduces the risk of breast cancer by up to 60%. 5) Increases strength and stamina. 6) Reduces depression and decreases stress. 7) Improves your digestion. 8) Enhances the quality of your sleep. 9) Adds radiance to your complexion. 10) Improves body shape, tones and firms muscles and provides more muscular definition. 11) Enables weight loss and helps keep it off. 12) Improves your endurance.
13) Improves circulation and reduces blood pressure. 14) Improves appetite for healthy foods. 15) Alleviates menstrual cramps. 16) Increases your metabolic rate. 17) Enhances coordination and balance. 18) Improves posture, eases and possibly eliminates back problems and pain. 19) Makes the body use calories more efficiently. 20) Lowers your resting heart rate. 21) Improves body composition and increases bone density. 22) Reduces joint discomfort. 23) Improves all athletic performance. 24) Enriches and improves sexuality.
25) Adds years to your life. 26) Increases the range of motion. 27) Enhances your immune system. 28) Improves glycogen storage. 29) Enables the body to utilize energy more efficiently. 30) Increases enzymes in the body which burn fat. 31) Enhances oxygen transport throughout the body. 32) Improves liver functioning. 33) Enhances feedback through the nervous system. 34) Strengthens the heart and increases maximum cardiac output. 35) Improves contractile function of the whole heart.
Keep in mind that the above list is just a “partial” list. Are you starting to understand why people who exercise feel so good? It is Christmas time and I don’t know about you, but on the top of my Christmas wish list is, I want to feel good! What about you? — Jason S. Christmas & The Constitution
Every year, it seems my office receives more and more calls from clients and businesses inquiring about what displays, functions and activities are constitutionally permitted. This article is to address some of the answers I have provided over the years to these questions that arise during the holiday season. I receive a lot of calls from both employers and employees about what they may do at work in the holiday. There is a difference between what a private business can do and what the government may compel its employees to do. Private companies are permitted to have their employees wear Christmas themed attire, say “Merry Christmas” to customers and put up religions Christmas decorations at their business locations. These activities are permitted, provided those employers are willing to reasonably accommodate the religious beliefs of those who may object based on differing religious backgrounds or beliefs. There are some different restrictions on what the government may do, however. In the case of Lynch v. Donnelly, 465 U.S. 668 (1984), the Supreme Court reviewed whether an agency or division of government could display religious symbols, including a
nativity scene, on public property. The Court held that it could, provided the nativity scene is part of a much larger holiday display, with additional analysis of that ruling suggesting Christmas trees and images of Santa Claus, snowmen, reindeer, and the like would qualify. In fact, there is a completely different ruling addressing Christmas trees. In County of Alleghany v. ACLU, 492 U.S. 573 (1989) the Court held Christmas trees are not considered religious and thus displaying a Christmas tree on public probably does not run afoul of the constitution. In that case, the Court specifically wrote “numerous Americans place Christmas trees in their homes without subscribing to Christian religious beliefs, and when the City’s tree stands alone in front of the City/County building, it is not considered an endorsement of Christian faith.” Accordingly, the display of a Christmas tree on public property would not violate the constitution. I also sometimes receive calls questioning how students can address, display or express their faith during the holiday season. This most often comes into play when students are asked to engage in Christmas oriented programs which involve biblical teachings and/or the singing of Christmas carols during public school programs. Interestingly, quite a few Courts have held that a school may ask students to sing Christmas carols with lyrics including religious content provided such advances the education of religious heritage. Public schools may also teach the biblical origins of Christmas
and be involved in Christmas programs which likewise do so. In the Supreme Court case of Stone v. Graham, 449 U.S. 39 (1980), the Court held that the “Bible may constitutionally be used in an appropriate study of history, civilization, ethics, comparative religion, or the like.” In that regard, students may write about and discuss religious topics, including Christmas and the birth of Jesus during non-instructional time. Hopefully, this article has cleared up questions you may have about what you as an employee, employer, government worker or student may do or ask others to do during the holidays and what could give rise to a violation of your constitutional rights or the rights of another. Should you have more detailed questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our office. Although our firm primarily handles cases of injury or wrongful death, as well as home-owner’s and storm damage claims, but I will be happy to try and answer whatever questions you may have pertaining to religious based displays and activity during this holiday season. In that same spirit, both our firm at Maloney-FrostLyons, LLC and I would like to wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable holiday season. — David J. Evangelist Scott Dawson on The Reason for the Season... Although I would not admit it publicly, down deep inside I had been lulled into thinking that Christmas revolved around family, festivities, and Jesus’ birth. Oh, I would do all the outward Christian Christmas duties: attend services, give to the red kettle, and if it were really needed I would serve in the nursery. But all of these were a precursor for the food-overloaded, family-focused Christmas. It was an event in Knoxville, Tenn. that messed up my self-absorbed mindset. A church had rented out the Thompson Boling Arena for a Christmas show that would occur three consecutive days with 8 performances. Until then, I had thought that Christmas “Cantatas” included a few carols, some cheesy humor, and of course, a live camel. This group asked me to preach the Gospel at the conclusion of the show and offer an invitation for people to respond. Seriously? Who would respond during a Christmas show? Again, at the risk of being vulnerable, I really had succumbed to the idea of Christmas being commercialized to the point of no return. By the time the weekend was over, 1200 plus people had responded to the invitation. I was forever changed into thinking that Christmas really is the “Most wonderful time of the year” … to share Jesus! Who will you invite? According to Thom Rainer, CEO of Lifeway, Christmas Eve services have by far the most non-churched people in attendance than any church service throughout the year. It makes sense. During Christmas, people want to connect with community. This could be a result of the constant reminder of family and community connected to Christmas. Maybe it is a result of childhood memories of Christmases past, or the barrage of advertising showing groups of people gathering for Christmas celebrations. In any case, I hope every church will not only conduct Christmas Eve services, but will also include a clear presentation of the meaning of Christmas and offer an opportunity for participants to “Call upon the name of the Lord to be saved” (Romans 10:13). Encourage your pastor and staff to make it a central theme of the service and bring non-churched friends and family members to the service. Some Churches offer tickets or reservations due to overwhelming demand for seats. Check early and often to get seats and fill them with people who are searching for “Hope.” How can you share Christ outside of the church service? The opportuni-

ties are as endless as the list of Hallmark Christmas movies! • Tell THE Story. Offer to share the meaning of Christmas during your office or class party. It isn’t a revival service, but in a sincere way you can share a brief explanation of why we celebrate Christmas and its true meaning. I have been invited to office parties to share the meaning of Christmas and every time I am overwhelmed by the positive response from attendees. Every Christmas my wife’s family gathers around the Christmas tree for the reading of the Christmas story from Luke Chapter 2. It is a reminder that although the kids are ready to rip through the wrapping paper for their store-bought presents, the best gift was given through the birth of Christ (1 John 10:10 … I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.). Take the time to explain to those who gather around your tree the real reason for Christmas. • Celebrate. One of our personal family favorites is the “Birthday Cake” for Jesus. When our children, Hunter and Hope, were young we started our Christmas morning with a birthday party for Jesus. If you think about it, it is HIS birthday! We would sing the song, pray, and then cut a special cakeusually a chocolate fudge pound cake. As they grew older, what was once a teaching lesson became a long-standing tradition! • Give Thanks for THE Gift. If not careful, even Christians will fall prey to the secularization of our Savior’s birth. There is so much to do before “The Big Day” arrives that includes gifts, lights, food and family arriving for visits. In this whirlwind of commotion, you too will begin to wonder why is there all this fuss about one day. It is then we should stop and remember the real reason for the season. In the Christmastime favorite, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Linus recites Luke 2 under the spotlight to a silent crowd. At his conclusion, Linus says, “That’s what Christmas is all about.” Before you give one gift to anyone else this Christmas, thank God for giving you the greatest gift, His Son, Jesus.

• Be Intentional. You will need to prepare your heart to be ready to take advantage of the opportunities God presents to share His life saving message. Most of the time the opportunities are present, but we don’t take advantage of them because we are not living in expectancy. Be ready. As I Peter 3:15 says “but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” The message of Christ can be summed up in the three gifts the wise men gave him- gold, frankincense and myrrh. Gold was a gift given to a King. Frankincense is a gumming substance that was used in burning for worship (Exodus 30:34). Myrrh is a substance that was used during preparing for death. Gold was given because He is King of Kings. Frankincense was a gift to the Lord. Myrhh was the annointment for burial (as a sacrifice for our sins He bled, died and rose again. (1 Corinthians 15:3).
• Pray. Ask the Lord to open doors for you to present the meaning of Christmas and for Him to prepare hearts to listen. As I grow older, I realize that I work like it depends on me, but I pray because I KNOW it depends on Him. Pray for your family. Pray for your friends. Pray for your community. • Don’t Worry. The one thing you do not want to do is to become stressed out because you are trying to share Hope with others. Take a breath. Walking in joy and peace, will be attractive to others.

• Remember. On December 26, January 26, and every month in 2018, remember THE Gift we have been given. Like the Christmas tree the day after Christmas- bare and without gifts- a life without Christ is empty. We have an incredible Savior that can save anyone, anytime, anywhere. I encourage you to share the hope of Christ this Christmas and all year long!
