FROM THE PUBLISHER A Savior Has Been Born The holiday season is in full swing. Everyone is frantically shopping for those last minute gifts, homes are decorated and signs of Christmas are everywhere. This is the time of year where we must take time out of our busy schedules and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Can you imagine? A simple manger filled with straw, the fragrance of animals all around and a cold night in Bethlehem. This was a night that would change the world forever. A young woman traveling by donkey in her final stages of pregnancy. A pregnancy created by God who sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to find Mary, the chosen virgin that would give birth to a son, named Jesus. He would be called the Son of the Most High. Mary was pledged to marry Joseph, and they were on a journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. There was no room for them in the inn and Mary knew it was time, and Joseph found shelter for Mary to rest. The story of Jesus’ birth is such a vivid image in all our minds as Christians. A baby born in a manger
surrounded by animals, shepherds, angels and wise men. What an awesome sight to behold! Christmas is a day to reflect on all the blessings God has bestowed upon us. It is a day that we can spend with family and friends and share gifts of love. I’m certain many of you have Christmas traditions in your household. One of my favorites is listening to my father read Luke 2: 120 from the Bible prior to opening gifts. As I listen to the story of baby Jesus, I am reminded of how blessed we truly are as Christians. “A Savior Has Been Born”…Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill to all men. I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and pray for your safe travels wherever they may take you during this season. Blessings,

Our MAD Diet is Slowly Giving Us Alzheimer’s, How to Avoid It We eat MAD, a Modern American Diet full of processed artificial foods laden with hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, flavoring chemicals and fake colors which are making our brains MAD. Because we keep eating and eating this MAD diet, our brain’s immune cells wear out eliminating these toxins and go mad, eating the good and bad brain cells, eventually causing dementia. The two major culprits of our MAD diet are…you probably guessed it as we went over the damage they cause last month-- sugar and wheat, actually processed sugars and gluten from wheat and other grains. This month, how to pull away from these detrimental ingredients. Sugar: Daily we might not inhale donuts or candy bars, we must watch for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in energy drinks and processed foods. Eliminate all processed foods from your diet. Stay hydrated from the get go by only drinking water, nearly ½ your weight in ounces. If you weigh 150 pounds, half it to 75, divide by 8 ounces in a cup, drink 9 cups of water a day. Go cold turkey. Clear your house of candy and excess sugar. The first three days will be hard, get through two or preferably three weeks then, if you must, load up on artificial cake from a box store. I bet you felt you were eating sweetened cardboard which then nauseated you. Maybe nor right away but did the nauseating sickness come one/two hours later? If you must quench your sweet tooth, grab a piece of fruit.
Gluten: Right off the bat, remove wheat and bread, which holds the greatest amount of gluten, from your diet. Breakfast: Substitute oatmeal, eggs, bacon and sausage for your cereal. Lunch: Decrease your sandwich bread. Week one: one slice only, work to eating no bread, concentrating on the meat (protein), veggies and fruit. When you are faced with hamburgers and hot dogs, chose no bread, load up the lettuce, pickle and tomato; plain mustard only, no HRCS ketchup nor artificial mayo. Feel like you need more weight in your stomach? Nuts, oats and blue or sweet potatoes (baked not fried). Dinner: No wheat rolls. Avoid all processed foods. Gluten is added as a filler and emulsifier. — Janet Rich Pittman Brain Health Specialist Former Dementia Administrator and Practitioner www.JanetRichPittman.com, Janet@JanetRichPittman.com

Lucy’s Cranberry Baked Brie
Fast and Fabulous Lemon Pie
The easiest and most delicious pie you’ll ever make! You’ll need: (A) a graham cracker pie crust; (B) an 8-ounce package of cream cheese; (C) a 14-oz. can of sweetened condensed milk; and (C) 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Set the cream cheese out to soften. In a mixing bowl, blend it with the sweetened condensed milk until smooth. Add the lemon juice and mix thoroughly. Pour into the pie crust and chill until set. Serve as is or top each slice with a dollop of whipped topping. Substitute lime juice for the lemon juice to make a “key” lime pie.
Don’t Take “No” for an Answer
I recently found a $350 music system with recording capability on sale on a website for $88. Since this store had several locations near me, I began contacting them to see if I could find it nearby rather than having it shipped. Each store I called responded differently. One said it wasn’t in stock. One said it was on sale for $100 off. A third location said they had it in stock, but wouldn’t honor the online price. Instead of giving up, I called the last store again, and this time asked for the manager. She told me she’d be happy to honor the online price and even had one held until I could get there to pick it up. It pays to be persistent. Don’t accept your first “no” as the final answer.
Closing Thoughts
“Mary has made the right choice” (Jesus speaking, Luke 10:42, HCSB). In Luke 10 we read about one of Jesus’ visits to the home of His dear friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. While Martha worked like a madwoman, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His teaching. Martha interrupted the lesson, saying, “Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand” (verse 40). Stressed out over little things, Martha failed to see the big thing: an opportunity to spend time with Jesus. Don’t miss out on what’s important because you’re tied up with secondary issues. Your home doesn’t have to be perfect for holiday guests – just welcoming. — Judy Woodward Bates Want Judy to speak to your church, civic organization, or ladies’ group? Ingredients:
8 oz brie 15 oz can cranberry sauce 12 oz bag fresh cranberries, rinsed zest and juice of 1 orange 1/4 cup water 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/8 teaspoon ground clove 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 bag miniature marshmallow, 10 oz
Preparation
Combine all cranberry sauce ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently, for 15-20 minutes until cranberries burst and sauce thickens. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place brie on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 minutes until brie starts to soften but not melt. Transfer brie to a serving platter and top with as much cranberry sauce as desired. Recipe makes enough cranberry sauce for 2 wheels of brie. Serve with crackers. — Chef Lucy Greer Greer’s Market & Catering

Christmas Perfect
God willing, when December 25th arrives I will have been around to participate in a total of forty-nine Christmas seasons. Forty-Nine! Man did that happen fast. My family looks forward to Christmas each year and we do our best to make it an enjoyable season / event for everyone involved. Speaking for myself, with almost two decades of “family man” under my belt, I gave up on creating the “perfect” Christmas experience years ago. Perfect is an elusive outcome. Just shoot for “great”, even “grand”, that’s my advice. Far less pressure. In all honesty, a “perfect Christmas” has not been achieved since the very first Christmas. By today’s worldly standards though, that first Christmas would have been far from perfect, but it was! Consider if you will the setting for the first Christmas…. Jesus was born to parents that were every bit as human as you and I. They did not live in black and white. Everything was just as in color for them as it is for us today. Look around you. It was just that real. Nine months pregnant Mary was not in the comfort of a modern home, or any home for that matter. She was riding a donkey, through the night. Joseph could do absolutely nothing for his pregnant wife except perhaps hold her hand or lead the donkey.
So, enjoy yourself! Deck the halls, the walls, the house, the front yard and the dog. Do it up big just don’t forget the reason. Don’t forget the “why” in it all, which is this….
This family to be had no posh “reservations” waiting for them at a local hospital. Not even a light left on for them at the local Motel 6. After arriving at their destination town of Bethlehem their shelter was ultimately found in a stable, which is also called a barn. I can only guess that they shared this space with a host of farm animals.
To celebrate the birth of a child that would spend His life on earth in the constant obedient execution of His Father’s will. Ultimately providing us all with a living human example of how God would have us to live, love, serve and forgive. Offering those that would choose to follow Him the gift of eternal salvation when “this” (look around you again) is all over. Indeed, the greatest gift ever offered.
To say that humble surroundings welcomed Christ’s arrival would be an understatement, but that was the plan! The birth of history’s greatest living example of an obedient servant and a savior for those that would and will follow Him took place not within a royal palace filled with pomp and circumstance…. but quietly in a barn. That first Christmas was indeed far from a perfect setting by today’s “worldly standards” but it was completely perfect by “God’s standards”. He orchestrated it all. Contrast that first Christmas with what Christmas has become today. Things have changed to say the least but the season, the birth of The Savior, is still to be celebrated.
This Christmas be sure to remember the reason for the season, remember the “why” in it all and be sure to “be where your feet are”. Last of all, in case you haven’t noticed, “this” is all happening very fast. Get in the boat. Do your part. Merry Christmas!

SOCIAL SUCCESS GROUNDED IN FAITH
Logging nearly one million viewers on social media every week, Jermaine “FunnyMaine” Johnson is best known in Alabama for his college-football YouTube series “How Bama Fans Watched.” The Birmingham, Ala.-based viral video personality and stand-up comedian is also a blogger, a graphic designer and an afternoon co-host on 97.7 JAMZ. In all these endeavors, he is recognized for his big smile and a silly style that pokes fun at sports, southern trends and nightlife. Recently preparing for a four-day set at the StarDome Comedy Club in Hoover, Ala., FunnyMaine explains how his focus is on encouraging others and trusting in God for continued success as God sees it. The youngest in a house full of boys, FunnyMaine says his childhood in Opelika, Ala. included scouts, music, and a lot of church. “My dad was a pastor; he started off small. He actually had a service in the living room then purchased a small building, then a bigger building, then another building,” FunnyMaine remembers. “I got to see it grow, and I know firsthand all the challenges that come with being pastor of a church. You’re dealing with so many different personalities, so many different opinions, but I’ve seen my dad stand strong in what he believes and how he wants to do stuff. He’s still in it years later.”
A master of “football” comedy, Jermaine “FunnyMaine” Johnson is best known for his social media presence and viral videos related to college football in the South.
FunnyMaine says his father’s strength also stood out in family tragedy. When he and his brothers were all under the age of 10, their mother died from medical complications related to lupus. “My dad was straight up and honest with us…He just told us, you know, this is what it is. We love her, she’s gone, but we’ve got to keep pressing forward. We’ve got to live our lives. That’s what she wanted. He was very upfront about it, and he encouraged us not to be afraid to miss your mom. Cry when you have to,” FunnyMaine recalls. “Then he remarried, and God blessed me with another motherly figure in my life. He definitely stepped up to the plate.” A self-professed class clown, FunnyMaine’s family moved to Pratt City, where he graduated from Jackson-Olin High School. At Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, FunnyMaine studied mass communications, served as drum major and student recruiter, and hosted basketball games. His first time on stage for stand-up was a favor from a friend. His fraternity brother was working as a disc jockey at a back-to-school comedy show for UAB in 2005. After a five-minute set, FunnyMaine received a standing ovation. Since then, he has opened for celebrities including DL Hughley, Rob Schneider and Tom Green. He has performed in front of sold out audiences at The Looney Bin in Little Rock, Ark.; The Mint in Los Angeles, Calif.; The Punchline Comedy Club in Atlanta, Ga.; and Zanie’s Comedy Club in Nashville, Tenn. Leaning into social media platforms on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, FunnyMaine launched his first “How Bama Fans” video on Facebook in September 2016, and the series averaged 1.8 million views per week through the end of the football season. Each segment is two to five minutes long and walks viewers through the facial expressions and verbal banter likely shared among Crimson Tide supporters during the previous Saturday’s college football matchups. Poking fun at underdogs, impressive plays, controversial calls and upsets, the marriage of football and comedy simply works. “It’s more than just a culture in Alabama. It’s something we decided a long time ago. This is our thing,” he says. “We’re good at it. We’re passionate about it. And I think everybody loves to laugh.” FunnyMaine says Birmingham has been particularly responsive to his material. “With the StarDome be-

ing here in Hoover for over 30 years now, I think we’re a comedy smart city. We’re a football smart city. When you put the two together, it seems like it was destined to be a win-win.”
Besides being a standup comic and a viral sensation, FunnyMaine is also a radio personality, co-hosting with Dwight “D. Stone” weekday afternoons on Birmingham’s Hip Hop and R&B station, 95.7 JAMZ FM.
FunnyMaine admits that a career in the comedy industry hasn’t been without struggle. He has experienced a repossession and an eviction. However, it was a grief he is thankful came with patience that was perhaps a gift from God. “It didn’t break me. It actually just made me stronger,” he remembers. “I realized nothing is going to be given to me. If I want to get out of this hole, if I want to change things, if I want to do all this great stuff that I feel like I can do, I’ve got to go harder. I’ve got to step it up a notch. And that’s what happened.”
Aside from the stage and social media, you can find FunnyMaine sharing his faith at churches, , including The Worship Center in Birmingham, Ala. where he has been a member since 2011. His message typically touches on avoiding the negative influence of a culture often focused on determining who is right and who is wrong. Initially, he explains, this lies in politics. But ultimately, it’s something more. “The bigger problem is we don’t know how to disagree anymore. We don’t know how to have conversations with people we don’t agree with, people who don’t live where we live, people who don’t look like we look, people who don’t worship like we worship. Can you imagine living in the world where you’re surrounded by people who just agree with you? And everybody does what you do? How can you ever learn in that? If everybody around you agrees with you, you’re not putting yourself in a position to learn anything.”

For wisdom and encouragement, FunnyMaine turns to Scripture. “I love Psalm 62; it’s a chapter to me that’s about believing in God vs. trusting in God. I think a lot of us have got the believing part down, but we don’t have the trust part down. A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned…and other financial lessons from the past If past financial turmoil has taught us anything, it’s that maybe we should pay attention to the age-old clichés our parents and grandparents passed on to us. Take it one day at a time…the new reality for most Americans when it comes to financial recovery. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket…a poster child for diversification. You get the idea. Keeping the “what’s old is new again” mantra in mind, here are some famous clichés from previous generations that Thrivent Financial thinks could serve us well this year and beyond.
1. “Don’t cry over spilled milk.” After a financial downturn, it is time to start putting the pieces back together. It might take a while (patience is a virtue after all), but you need to start somewhere.
2. “Save for a rainy day.” Call it an emergency savings fund or rainy-day fund. The idea is simple, but changing our behavior is not. Money is easy to spend and there’s no question that there is still plenty of “gotta have it now” in all of us. It’s time to slow down on spending and start saving. Next, resist the temptation to raid your savings! While most Americans have plenty of credit card debt (and that issue needs to be addressed as part of your financial picture), resist the temptation to raid the savings to pay it all off immediately. Also, resist the desire to raid the savings for cash purchases. If you succumb, whenever the fund is used, the amount withdrawn should be replenished as soon as possible.
7. “Lend a helping hand.” Reach out to others in need through charitable giving and by volunteering your time and talents. There is plenty of need and every little bit helps. 8. “Stop and smell the roses.” Remember your most important investment is time spent with family and friends.

3. “A penny saved is a penny earned.” For an emergency savings fund, a
standard savings account or money market account should meet your needs. However, thinking even longer-term, consider certificates of deposit (CDs). CDs help force you to commit your money for a period, to start making your savings a more permanent habit. It should be noted that the money is not accessible for the term.
4. “You’re walking on thin ice.” In times of financial hardship, you may
have had to sacrifice the standard financial protection that you always took for granted. If you terminated your life insurance contract, now is the time to begin shopping around for a new one. If something happened to you, would your family be able to maintain their current lifestyle? Could they stay in the house, so the kids would not have to move and switch schools? The time to protect your family is now. And, you know what they say, never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: Cats & Dogs My back hurts! How about yours? This article goes out to everyone over 40-years of age. Maybe, I should just dedicate this to everyone with a bad back. Unfortunately, it appears the two groups are forever intertwined. I have very few friends over forty who do not complain of at least mild back pain. These exercises are not the cure all for all bad backs, but they are excellent exercises that are recommended by most orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors and personal trainers. I am presenting them together because when writing an exercise routine I invariably combine them into a super-set. The first exercise is referred to as “Cat Backs” or “The Cat-Camel”. One of the leading experts on spinal health, Dr. Stuart McGill says, “The cat-camel helps floss neural tissues and keeps them healthy. Also, that exercise helps align collagen during the healing process. It’s appropriate for most painful backs.” In simple terms it is real easy, real gentle and just about anyone can do it. I use it as a warm up for almost all other core exercises. The second exercise known as “The Bird Dog” increases strength and stability throughout your entire core. It can be performed without any equipment. The bird dog is beneficial for everyone, no matter what his or her level of fitness. This is not only a great re-hab exercise; it can actually be beneficial in preventing back injuries! Another great feature of this exercise is that it is simple to perform. Cat/Camel 1. Kneel on all fours and inhale deeply. (Photo-1). 2. Exhale and stretch your back by arching it upwards like an angry cat. (Photo-2). Stay relaxed and do not hold your breath. Inhale and return to starting position. 3. Exhale and slowly allow your back to sag like a camel. (Photo-3). Inhale and return to starting position. 4. Repeat the whole sequence 3 to 6 times. Note: The Cat/Camel that is a great exercise to perform several times a day. It will not only improve the health of your back, but most people find that it is also a great stress reducer.
1.
2.
The Bird Dog 1. Kneel on all fours (like a bird dog). (Photo-1) 2. Keep your spine in a neutral position (straight and flat). 3. Keep your midsection braced and tight. 4. Raise your right arm and extend your hand straight ahead. At the same time, extend your left leg off the floor and point your foot straight back. (Photo-4) 5. The spine should be neutral throughout this exercise. 6. Hold for 3-5 seconds and repeat with the other side. Alternate sides for up 5-10 repetitions on each side.
3.
Bird Dog Tips: In order to make the bird dog easier, you can start with just your arms and then add the leg movement later after you become stronger. Once you can hold the bird dog position for a count of 10 -15 you can make the exercise harder by holding a light dumbbell in each hand. You may also add ankle weights to your legs to increase the resistance even further.

7 Signs You May be Unhealthy
The human body is an amazing thing and it has the ability to send instant signals to the brain letting you know something may be wrong. Some people go through life not paying attention to detail of their bodies and this is important. Let’s look at a few things that you may be overlooking today that could potentially lead to some real health problems further down the road.
1. Skin
The quality of your skin is a sure-fire way to get a reading on your overall level of health. Of course, some people struggle with skin issues like acne and are otherwise perfectly fine — but skin quality can clue you in to some bigger problems. A poor diet can really impact your skin quality, and if you’re noticing blemishes like stretch marks? That should tell you that something is wrong. Diet is first and foremost, the colon is second and should be looked at.
2. Sleep Issues
Whether it be that you’re eating the wrong foods, ingesting too much caffeine late in the day, or not expelling enough energy during the day, not being able to sleep presents an issue — which cascades into further issues. I get all my patients off coffee and tea and get their diet straightened up and this can usually be fixed fairly easily as long as medicines are not the issue.
3. Bathroom Issues
5. Bad Nails
If the condition of your lips wasn’t a solid enough indicator, your finger and toe nails can also give you a heads-up if you’re unhealthy. You’re going to want to be on the lookout for ridges, discoloration, and bumps — all of which should be red flags. Your nails can tell you a lot about your overall state of health, so if something is strange, don’t ignore it.
6. Cold Hands and Feet
Yes, there could be environmental factors at play, but if you’re consistently finding that your extremities are ice cold, it can be a sign of cardiovascular problems. Cold hands or feet might mean that you’re having circulation issues, and that your body isn’t getting blood where it needs to go. If this is a chronic issue, have it checked out.
7. Forgetting Memory
It’s becoming quite clear that our cognitive ability and brain health are closely tied to our physical condition. That means that obesity and elevated levels of body fat can have a significant impact on our ability to think and reason. It’s kind of scary, but also a very promising area of research. So, if you can’t formulate a potent thought, it may be a sign that it’s time to drop some weight. Remember flabby thighs equals a flabby brain, get in the gym and train that body for better overall health. Until next time, Stay healthy ! — Dr. Jimmy Steger
Yep, we’re getting down and dirty. Take note of the color of your urine, and even how frequently you’re going No. 2 — those could both provide important insight into the state of your overall health. Since you’re going to ask, your urine should be a pale yellow color — and hopefully odorless. As for your bowel movement frequency, there’s a wide range. However if you’re going regularly, meaning two times per day, you’re probably fine. And don’t ignore the grimy details during
4. Chapped Lips
If your lips are constantly chapped, and you find that you can’t live without lip balm, that’s your body’s way of telling you that something’s wrong. Specifically, your lip condition is an indicator of your vitamin levels. If your lips are chapped, you may be vitamin strapped — so diversify your diet, and get the nutrients you need.

Christmas celebrations in the American colonies were very different than they are today. You would not have found piles of wrapped gifts under Christmas trees, stockings hung with care on mantels, or televisions playing reruns of It’s a Wonderful Life. But many things were the same. Christmas was an important religious holiday in George Washington’s time, and the twelve nights of Christmas, ending in balls and parties on January 6 extended the holiday season. For Washington, his Colonial Christmas experiences were both joyful and terrifying. George Washington’s boyhood home in Fredericksburg, Va. burned down on Christmas Eve of 1740. The Washington family took shelter “in the detached kitchen and spent a cheerless Christmas Day.” In 1751 George ate Irish goose and drank to the health of absent friends while onboard a ship returning to Virginia from Barbados. Washington had been with his older brother Lawrence who was hoping the warmer climate might help cure his tuberculosis. Christmas of 1753 was spent on the western frontier with the Virginia militia fighting the French and Indian War. Christmas 1758 was a momentous time in George Washington’s life, as he married Martha Dandridge Custis on January 6, 1759 – the twelfth night of Christmas. George spent much of Christmas 1770 in typical activities, foxhunting with friends and family and visiting his mill. He attended services at Pohick Church and had dinner at home with his family. In 1775, during the first Christmas of the American Revolution, Martha Washington traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to be with her husband. Martha’s presence at the Continental Army’s winter encampments not only helped to encourage Washington, but also boosted the morale of the entire camp. Christmas 1777, Gen. Washington and much of the Continental Army were in winter quarters at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Almost half the camp was either sick or dying. It snowed Christmas day and by the next morning, it measured four inches

deep. 1781 was a bittersweet Christmas, spent in Philadelphia. Washington had defeated Lord Cornwallis in the last major battle of the Revolutionary War in October. However, Martha’s son, Jacky, died a few weeks after that victory of a fever contracted at the siege of Yorktown. Christmas 1786 saw the Washingtons finally spending Christmas together at their Mount Vernon home. They most likely attended services at Pohick Church, then returned home, where a “Yorkshire Christmas-Pye” was served. On December 26, 1786, Washington wrote David Humphreys, a friend and former aide, that the Washingtons had served “one [a pie] yesterday on which all the company, (and pretty numerous it was) were hardly able to make an impression…” The recipe for the impressive dish included a bushel of flour and the preparation was lengthy, labor intensive, and difficult. 1789 was George Washington’s first Christmas as the President of the United States. The White House had not yet been constructed, so the Washingtons were in their rented New York home for this holiday season and attended services at St. Paul’s Church. In 1798, with the young people away, George and Martha had a relatively quiet Christmas at home in Mount Vernon, the last they would spend together. George Washington died eleven days before Christmas of 1799. As Washington was dying, Mrs. Washington is recorded as having no doubts, no fears for him. After forty years of devoted affection and uninterrupted happiness, she “resigned him without a murmur into the arms of his Savior and his God, with the assured hope of his eternal felicity.”
In virtually every public speech or public writing, Washington spoke of God’s providential care in the establishment of the United States and its Constitution. Seen here in the American Village ballroom is a copy of the Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, c. 1965, oil on canvas. The piece is on loan from the Birmingham Museum of Art.
Lessons & Carols. From the first Sunday of Advent and continuing through Christmas Eve, colonial parishioners, including Washington, would have heard the same collect or prayer from the Book of Common Prayer: “ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son

Amen.” This will also be a part of the American Village’s fifteenth annual Festival Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Sunday December 2. Set in a chapel evocative of colonial times the service offers a wonderful opportunity of worship to God the Father, Jesus Christ His son, and the Holy Spirit. The Power of Holiday Traditions
Well, the holiday season has begun and people all over the world are now gearing up and anticipating the arrivals of their family members and friends.
Whether you are preparing for a small, large, or extra-large gathering, there is nothing like being with family and dear friends who appreciate you simply for being who you are. It is during these times that we plug into our rich family roots and experience the unique styles that contribute to our family’s cultural existence. Through our traditions of religion, food, song, dance, or stories, generational barriers are often removed and the past of our elders are seen giving wisdom and inspiration to the present heirs. You may believe that your traditions are no longer relevant, but I am here to tell you that they are very STRONG & POWERFUL. Your traditions honor the struggles and celebrate the triumphs of your ancestors. They breathe life, meaning and purpose. They become the thread that weaves each member into the historic fabric of your family’s ancestral cloth. Your Traditions are Indeed Valuable. So as you come together this holiday season, remember to incorporate those meaningful traditions old and new that will stir-up the pride and spiritual design enriching each member of your beautiful family. — Veronica Davis Veronica Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addictions Therapist. B e st B ooks Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas I have always been fascinated by trivia. I love to discover an obscure detail of history which explains why things are the way they are, or an odd fact that seems so counter-intuitive that it's often met with incredulity. Trivia, by definition, is information that is not inherently important. The value of such information rests not in its importance or degree of relevance, but in the sheer pleasure of its discovery. The incarnation of God is not a trivial matter. The manner in which we observe and celebrate the birth of God's Son, however, is an entirely human enterprise. As such, it is a season filled with history, customs, artistry, and intriguing facts. In his book, Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas (Zondervan, $14.99), Ace Collins reveals the source behind many of our Christmas traditions. From the origins of Advent and Epiphany to the use of poinsettias and Christmas ornaments, Collins explores how the customs which we take for granted came into being. How is Prince Albert largely responsible for the use of Christmas trees in England and America? Where is the symbolic reference to Jesus in the carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and why do we stand during the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah? How did an act of kindness by a 4th century priest toward a peasant girl lead to eight stockings hanging on my fireplace mantle? Discover the answers to these and many other fascinating questions in Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas. — Darrel Holcombe
