EDITORIAL Ever since 1875, the Munich Opera Festival of the Bayerische Staatsoper has stood as an annual summer highlight amongst the European opera festivals, attracting audiences not only from Germany but also from around the world, with a vibrant and diverse programme featuring opera, ballet, and concerts. The 2024 edition of the Munich Opera Festival promises another extraordinary theatrical and musical experience with the world´s most renowned artists (singers, conductors, directors, and choreographers). The theme for the 2023–24 season of the Bayerische Staatsoper draws its inspiration from the philosophical words of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa: “We never know self-realization. We are two abysses – a well staring at the sky”. These words resonate with the complex and contrasting aspects of our contemporary world – the coexistence of darkness and light, reflecting our feelings of helplessness and hope and encapsulating both the anxiety and the magnificence of our shared humanity. The 2024 Munich Opera Festival celebrates its grand opening night with a masterpiece from the latter part of the 20th century: György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre. This grandiose piece, which can be described as a huge dark farce, was inspired by The Triumph of Death by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Hieronymus Bosch, Otto Dix and James Ensor. Le Grand Macabre is a synthesis of Ligeti’s entire artistic oeuvre, incorporating elements from classical composers and musical forms, such as Beethoven and Monteverdi’s madrigal, which – viewed in the light of modernity – merges into a comprehensible contemporary musical language.

Editorial
The idea of the ”well staring at the sky” is also echoed in the new production of Debussy’s and Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande. Much like the ill-fated love of Tristan and Isolde, the characters of Pelléas and Mélisande attempt to live their impossible love, a journey with a tragic end. In the enigmatic beauty of Maeterlinck’s symbolist theatre piece, Debussy discovered the equivalent of his musical ambitions. This year’s edition also delves into the creative realms of two music theatre geniuses, Giacomo Puccini and Richard Wagner, and their differing notions of love, which will be explored in lectures and discussions. Two works by each composer are featured during the festival: Tosca and La fanciulla del West by Puccini; Tannhäuser and Parsifal by Wagner. The new production of Tosca staged by Kornél Mundruczó, premiered earlier in the season, will be live-broadcasted on an outdoor screen as part of the Opera for All event on July 27, transforming the Max-Joseph-Platz into a vibrant, open-air auditorium. Furthermore, the Munich Opera Festival also invites you to review all new productions of the current season, including Le nozze di Figaro, Pique Dame, Die Fledermaus, and Die Passagierin alongside beloved repertoire pieces such as Elektra, Idomeneo, and Il trovatore. With singers such as Diana Damrau, Sabine Devieilhe, Christian Gerhaher, Jonas Kaufmann, Nina Stemme, Klaus Florian Vogt, Michael Volle, and many others, the international opera stars will once again grace the stage of the Bayerische Staats oper. Chamber concerts and song recitals further enrich the programme. As an integral part of the Munich Opera Festival, the world-class dancers of the Bayerisches Staatsballett showcase the talents of emerging choreographers in the premiere of Spheres.02 | Preljocaj at the Cuvilliés Theatre. Angelin Preljocaj’s Le Parc and an evening of contemporary ballets by Nacho Duato, Andrew Skeels, and Sharon Eyal, round up the ballet programme. The Munich Opera Festival is the perfect way to start your summer opera season and we greatly look forward to welcoming you. Yours sincerely, Serge Dorny

FESTIVAL FOCUS AND THERE WAS NOTHING MORE TENDER ON EARTH … Between Charity and Ecstasy On love in Richard Wagner and Giacomo Puccini “And there was nothing more tender on earth,” Thomas Mann has Hans Castorf say in his novel The Magic Mountain, as Castorf winds up a phonograph, puts on a record and enthuses over Puccini’s La bohème, while also paying tribute to Wagner’s minstrel Wolfram von Eschenbach and his secret love for Elisabeth. Puccini admired Wagner to the extent of quoting the Tristan chord in Manon Lescaut. But did Puccini, with his powerfully effective description of love, also pick up on the discourse on love that typifies a composer described by Adorno as “the most famous erotic artistic of the bourgeois world”? In 2022 the Munich Opera Festival focused on Richard Strauss and on the idea of time as what the Marschallin calls a “strange thing”, while in 2023 the focus shifted to Verdi, Wagner and the future of opera. In 2024 we shall be exploring Puccini’s and Wagner’s accounts of the most disparate aspects of love, an emotion that is one of opera’s central topoi. A varied programme of events will complement the performances of Parsifal, Tannhäuser, Tosca and La fanciulla del West. As in the past four critics will contribute to the discussion. On this occasion they are Eleonore Büning, Markus Thiel, Kai Luehrs-Kaiser and Serge Dorny. Lectures and discussions will examine themes such as the trials of love, bans on love, love-feasts and nights of love. And new light will be shed on the compositional affinities between Wagner and Puccini. LIGETI’S JUKE BOX
FOR THE NEW PRODUCTION OF “LE GRAND MACABRE”
It is striking that Ligeti used car horns and doorbells as instruments, while his works include titles such as Nonsense Madrigals and Hungarian Rock. Few composers have revealed such a pronounced sense of humour as Ligeti. He began his career by following in the footsteps of his Hungarian compatriot Béla Bartók, while explor ing Hungarian folk music, before fleeing to Vienna and becoming a celebrated exponent of contemporary music. He experimented with electronic sounds, expanded the range of forms of vocal articulation and composed the iridescent musical sounds that Stanley Kubrick made famous in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. As a composer he was inspired by a sense of mischief, while looking like an anti-bourgeois rebel who even today continues to surprise us with his unorthodox ideas. In the run-up to the Festival premiere of Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, which he called an “anti-anti-opera”, Ligeti’s Jukebox will provide a framing programme that will be as eclectic as his own output as a composer, allowing audiences to get to know one of the most unusual composers of the twentieth century. At various venues in Munich, beginning in May 2024 For the most up-to-date information, please visit our website
