2013 — 2014

How one becomes what one is. “How one becomes what one is.” These words, taken from Friedrich Nietzsche’s autobiography Ecce Homo, describe the motto for the 2013 / 2014 season. In a sense, next season’s main focus lies on “autobiography”; the biography and autobiography of a house, an institution, a long lasting history. 1943, 1963, and 2013 mark key events in the history of the Bavarian State Opera over the last 100 years. During the night of November 3 rd 1943, an allied air raid almost entirely destroyed the National Theatre. After a long interim phase at the Prince Regent Theatre, the National Theatre was reopened on November 21 st 1963. The reconstruction of the Munich National Theatre 50 years ago demonstrated a tremendous effort, an empathic expression of will by politicians and especially the people. A commitment to tradition, identity, and culture. The hopeful expression to continue values which were thought to have outlasted the years of war, national-socialism, inhumanity, destruction, and political turmoil unscathed. Was it a hopeful desire for a new beginning? Or perhaps the wish for normality and forgetting the past? Without doubt, however, it was the hope for glamour and joy and certainly: The love for opera. When the opera house burnt down in 1823, the citizens of Munich imposed a beer tax as a measure to support the king in reconstructing the opera. In 1952, the people began to organize annual raffles to collect money. Today, the Friends of the National Theatre stand for civic involvement for the opera. Richard Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten was the first production after the war; a seemingly non-ideological, nonpolitical and fairytale-like oeuvre that is centered around the definition of humanity and what it takes to guarantee its persistence. 50 years after the reopening, general music director Kirill Petrenko will give his debut with the same work. Beyond the premiere

there will be investigations into the history of the National Theatre. How did this new start deal with the past? What ideas lead to the decision of reconstructing the historic building? “How one becomes what one is.” also implies to understand oneself and one’s development in retrospect. Bearing Nietzsche’s phrase in mind we let our thoughts circle around the art form opera as this is where the future begins: With everything that is lost and forgotten and must be looked back on and reappraised. What remains is the emergence of history that ceaselessly continues.

Nikolaus Bachler, General Manager

Bavarian State Opera

Tradition, continuity and an impressive repertoire: These are the solid pillars supporting the Bavarian State Opera – one of the world’s leading opera houses. It can proudly look back on a cultural history of more than 350 years. Thanks to a court tradition, opera found a home in Munich in 1653; since then its music-historical and sociopolitical development has continued in a way unparalleled anywhere else, worldwide. The Bavarian State Opera, with some 600,000 persons attending its over 300 performances each year, makes a major contribution to Munich’s reputation as one of the great international cultural capitals. In the course of a single season, over 30 operas from five centuries are performed along with ballets, concerts and song recitals. This makes the programme of the Bavarian State Opera one of the most richly varied performance schedules of all the international opera houses. As in 1963, when the National Theatre was re opened, the 50th anniversary will be opened with a production of Richard Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten under the new general music director Kirill Petrenko. Later this season, Petrenko will also conduct new productions of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s epic Die Soldaten. In addition, the program features Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros in a new interpretation of Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino staged by Martin Kušej. The Munich Opera Festival will open with Gioachino Rossini’s Giullaume Tell and will present the première of Claudio Monteverdi’s baroque opera L’Orfeo.

Bavarian State Ballet

The Bavarian State Ballet, under the artistic leadership of Ivan Liška since 1998, has become one of the most distinguished ensembles of the international dance world. The company is well-known for its diverse repertory which includes more than fifty works: from full-length 20th century classics, to neo-classicism and modern dance. „Dance Country Germany“ – for the upcoming two seasons, the Bavarian State Ballet will present selected pieces of repertory and two major reconstructions under this motto. Known around the world as a country rich in dance culture, Germany has brought forth many choreographers, including John Neumeier, William Forsythe, Gerhard Bohner, Kurt Joos, Pina Bausch and S asha Waltz amongst others. The season 2013 / 2014 will continue to expand on Bavarian State Ballet’s signature repertory, composed of full-length classics and contemporary works as well as feature world premieres by two highly in demand choreographers of today: Aszure Barton and Russell Maliphant.

Bavarian State Orchestra

The Bavarian State Orchestra emerged from o ne of the oldest orchestras in Germany. Its origins lie in the Munich Court music and can be traced back to the year 1523. The first renowned director of the Court Orchestra was composer Orlando d i Lasso, who was officially hired in 1563. In 1811 the Musical Academy, made up of members of the Court Orchestra, was founded. The Academy implemented the oldest concert series in Munich, the so-called Academy Concerts. During the 2011 / 2012 season, the Academy of one of the world’s oldest and most historic orchestras celebrated its 200 th birthday. Under King Ludwig I, the orchestra managed to win Franz Lachner as its first General Music Director in 1836. Since then, the most important artists of their time have served as heads of the orchestra, from Richard Strauss, Felix Mottl, through Bruno Walter, Hans Knappertsbusch, and Clemens Krauss, to Georg Solti, Ferenc Fricsay, Joseph Keilberth, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. In addition, there was an intense cooperation with Carlos Kleiber, who was a permanent guest conductor from 1976 to 1988. Zubin Mehta was chief conductor and Bavarian General Music Director from 1998 to 2006. His successor was Kent Nagano from 2006 to 2013. Starting this season Kirill Petrenko will be the new General Music Director of the Bavarian State Orchestra.

1943 — 1963 — 2013: These three numbers do not only symbolize destruction, reconstruction, and the 50-year anniversary of the National Theatre’s reopening but also form the theme for five themed concerts in November of 2013. With these concerts, given a week prior to the anniversary celebration of Theatre’s reopening, the Bavarian State Opera continues its collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute. This cooperation combining chamber concerts on the theme “How one becomes what one is.” with counterpointing lectures by scientists of various disciplines is meant to create intellectual-emotional stimulus for thinking ahead.

Munich Opera Festival

Since 1875, the Bavarian State Opera has put on the Munich Opera Festival, the annual high point of Munich’s cultural summer. This makes it the oldest festival of its kind. During its five-week period, people from all over the world have an opportunity to enjoy a wide-ranging repertoire of operas – among them festival premieres – and the latest productions. A comprehensive program of ballet, concerts, song recitals and visual art rounds off the Munich Opera Festival schedule. In 2014 the premiere of Gioachino Rossinis’s Guillaume Tell and the premiere of David Böschs’s production of LʼOrfeo by Claudio Monteverdi form the frame to the festival. World class singers and conductors will present the broad repertoire of the house.
