Welcome to ART ESCAPE
A vibrant, growing arts community makes its home on the Bayfield Peninsula. The natural beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands provide constant inspiration to dozens of artists calling Wisconsin’s northernmost tip home.
The Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau invites you to immerse yourself in Bayfield County and Madeline Island’s rich arts culture from September 9-17, 2023. The second annual Art Escape is a nine-day celebration featuring area artists, workshops, open houses, and demonstrations.
Bayfield’s 60th annual Festival of Arts kicks off the week’s events. Art vendors will line the shores of Lake Superior in Memorial Park, the heart of beautiful Bayfield. The festival showcases regional and national artists. A true family event, there will be hands-on activities for kids at the festival and all week long at galleries and studios across the peninsula and on Madeline Island.
Drive around the Bayfield peninsula and visit the many galleries along Lake Superior’s South Shore and Chequamegon Bay. Be sure to stop at the Cornucopia Art Crawl the opening weekend of Art Escape (Sept. 9-10). Hop on the Madeline Island Ferry to Madeline Island and enjoy open houses and demonstrations at art galleries in the town of La Pointe all week long.
Art Escape is an opportunity to experience the wonderful arts scene in Wisconsin’s premier peninsula. The robust arts community here enriches our communities, and we are delighted to share this extraordinary wealth. Thank you to all the area artists for making the second annual Art Escape a success! You won’t find a better escape in Wisconsin.

ANDY FALCONER, WOBBLY WOODS FARM AND STONE’S THROW GALLERY
OPEN HOUSE AND DEMOS EVERY DAY OF ART ESCAPE STONESTHROWBAYFIELD.COM
Once upon a time back in 1979, Andy Falconer came to the Lake Superior Area. Not having an idea of what to do with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Webster University, she decided to mooch off her sister Leslie and accepted a clerking job at Karlyn’s Gallery (now called Ghost Ship Gallery and Art Lounge) in Washburn, Wisconsin. Karlyn soon had her working the front desk, mixing clay and glazes, throwing, taking orders, and packing and shipping. Before Andy knew it, she was hooked. A new love affair was born, not just with clay, but with the business of running a gallery and making it seem fun. In 1995, Andy opened her own gallery called Stone’s Throw in Bayfield. On occasion, when the business of running the shop seems less than fun, she throws pots and loves it!
Andy invites you into her studio, Wobbly Woods Farm, September 9-17, to share her passion for pot throwing. The studio is tucked in the orchard bluffs of Bayfield, a few minute’s drive from Stone’s Throw. In addition to making pottery, she creates “window bling”, colorful hangings using driftwood, beach glass and beach stones from Lake Superior.
Stone’s Throw, located in beautiful lower Bayfield in a historic turn-of-the-century building, is an upbeat gallery. You’ll find a wide variety of eclectic items ranging from handmade porcelain pottery to jewelry, sculpture, functional home decor and more. You might even be lucky enough to catch Leo, the adorable, albeit quirky, shop dog.
DEANNA ECKELS AND PETE SKORO
ECKELS
POTTERY & FINE CRAFT GALLERY
DEMOS SEPT 9, 11-15
ECKELSPOTTERY.COM
How do I stay fresh, inspired, and grow as an artist? After 45 years of making pots in Bayfield, my husband Pete Skoro and I asked ourselves: What does our artistic future look like?
My father, Robert Eckels (Bob), started our pottery in 1960 and was instrumental in creating the art culture in Bayfield and surrounding area. Many potters on the peninsula were apprentices, drawn to Bayfield by my father’s desire to teach and train people who followed their hearts to ceramics. After college I came home to work with my dad until he passed in 2004, then decided to carry on our family traditions, and have operated the pottery/gallery ever since.
My work in ceramics has included private commissions, traveling to shows, published work and local and national invitational exhibits like the American Craft Council and the Smithsonian Craft Show. Eckels Pottery has supported the local schools with educational workshops, classes to the public, as well as hosting “Empty Bowls” charities and other events for many years.
An opportunity came our way in 2022 when we were invited to be resident potters at the Don Reitz Center for Ceramics, in Clarkdale, Arizona. Wow! I began to feel it was time for me to get out of my comfortable studio zone and see what other potters-young and old we’re doing.
We packed up our tools, ordered clay, grabbed our dog Rudy, and headed west. I was nervous about leaving my studio for three months but was drawn to find out what we would learn. We had a great private studio where we worked in a variety of clay bodies, new glazes, and explored making sculpture, and functional ware. We made pots alongside other ceramic artists with a variety of experience, from beginners to seasoned potters. We met Vergil Ortiz, a Cochiti Pueblo native and Indian Arts and Culture’s Living Treasure and Gus Smith, a 26-year-old potter from Phoenix, who became our soda firing mentor. We worked with primitive-saggar firing, atmospheric soda firing, raku and gas fired kilns, underglazes, terra sigillate and other surface treatments. We loved it! I was over-the-moon inspired by the abundance of opportunities in one place.
continued on page 14>
ARTIST PROFILES
I focused on extending my own style and surface drawings using all these new materials and techniques. We shared our wide range of technical and creative knowledge with the other potters and my experience working with porcelain became a resource for others. Like jazz I was improvising with my original themes letting my thoughts of the moment create spontaneous patterns and shapes that make a composition.
Pete, working in stoneware and porcelain, used the time to not only make our traditional Eckels Pottery ware but also explore primitive firing techniques, figurative painting with underglazes, and surface carving. We collaborated on pieces of work, using each other’s skills with these new resources to fulfill fresh vision of our pots.
So, did the universe provide what I asked for? Yep! We want to push ourselves to new limits; set new goals, build a soda kiln, create a primitive kiln to go along with our raku kiln, turn part of our studio into a classroom, and continue the traditions my dad started in 1960.
Eckels Pottery will offer those interested in ceramics and art many opportunities to fulfill your art interests during Art Escape week:
Saturday, September 9, from 12 pm-5 pm, Eckels Pottery will offer our annual public Raku pottery firing. We invite you to participate and experience this exciting method of pottery making. Combining open fire, glaze and clay, guests can take home a finished pot. Raku refers to a type of low-fire process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku potters associated with the tea-ceremony. A bisque fired piece is available for purchase. With our instruction, the glaze is applied, then put through a raku firing. The firing cycle of raku is much faster than a typical pottery firing and can take as little as 30 minutes to fire.
You’ll take your raku pot out of the kiln when it’s red hot, so you won’t be able to see the result until the piece has cooled. Some of the interesting results you might see are crackled glaze surfaces, black smoked unglazed clay, or even beautiful metallic effects.
Raku firing really is one of the most natural techniques that you can encounter in pottery. In raku firing, all of nature’s elements are used, earth, fire, air, and water. Join us for this fun family event, adults, and children alike!
Saturday, September 16, from 1 p.m., John Thompson will demonstrate and talk about his tree carvings.
Here’s what John says: “Having spent my life growing trees, harvesting, and regenerating this most environmentally friendly
resource- if there is a single thing I know, it is the shape of a tree, so making trees to show the beauty of the wood seemed like a natural fit.
It really is all about the wood, and the beauty hidden until we find it inside. The tree shapes are a comforting and familiar form to display that beauty.
I use a band saw to shape them, then sand (way too much) and finally give them 4-6 coats of clear matte varnish. Nothing is stained or colored. I use superglue to stabilize areas of soft wood, which is often the most interesting. (Don’t make my mistake and superglue your mustache down, as I did a few weeks ago.)
The unseen part of making my trees is in finding the woods. I use about 42 different woods, and I am constantly looking for interesting woods. The best pieces are often pretty shaggy looking. I hope you enjoy my trees as much as I enjoyed making them.
My wife Patty and I live in Duluth, Minn., about two miles from Lake Superior. I came to Duluth in 1970. I quickly came to love the lakes and woods of our area and even took up ice fishing. I got into my chosen profession of forestry, working for St. Louis County, Minn., where I spent my career.
I gravitated to woodworking in 7th grade shop class, and long before retirement I spent my free time in the shop. We also love to travel, and we spend a lot of our summers at our lake property in Iron River, Wis. Much of the wood used here comes from our own trees.”
Monday through Friday, September 11 through, September 16, 5:30 p.m. 7 p.m. Wine and cheese or BYOB, Open to all, lecture, and demonstration of specialties of ceramics, by Pete Skoro:
• “The Perfect Coffee Cup”
• “This’ll Grab Ya” Making Handles
• “Bowl Magic” Large, small, wide, tall
• “Go Large!” Throwing large shapes
• “Get a Grip on It” Making Lids
We hope to see you!

ARTISTS SQUARED GALLERY & ARTISTS ON THE BYWAY GALLERY
ART TALKS SEPT 10 & 11
ARTISTSSQUAREDGALLERY.COM
Artists Squared Gallery and Artists on the Byway Gallery in Washburn will host art talks during the Art Escape week, one in each gallery during a scheduled open house. These two galleries are owned and directed by Susan Lince and John Hopkins. Each of these “his and hers” galleries has a distinctive style, showing and selling local and regional art that reflects the interest and talent of its owner/artist. Susan is the abstract mixed media painter, and John paints skyscapes and landscapes in oils. Each of their art talks will engage visitors in understanding their art process, and the story behind the paintings.
The couple moved to Washburn in 2018, after having developed and directed a gallery in the Twin Cities Metro for twoand-a-half years. They established their first gallery in Washburn in a former restaurant in 2018, and their second in a residential/ commercial building that they transformed into an art space in 2021. Between the two galleries, the work of about 60 artists has been shown over time, and includes art by both Susan and John as well. Susan and John share the joy of making art, and they team continuously and actively on the mission to grow the arts in the community they love for its natural beauty and its creative energy. Since 2021, they have received three grants for promoting art in the community, and commissioned a sign on the Bayfield Street in Washburn that invites people to understand that “Washburn Is For The Arts”.
John , whose painting name is J.R. Lince-Hopkins, is known especially for his cloud paintings, but has also used the inspiration of sunsets and sunrises over the lake, birds, trees, and bumblebees as subject matter for his paintings since coming to the Bayfield Peninsula. His art can be seen as large public art on two Washburn buildings, and as a centerpiece in a garden space open to the public in downtown Washburn. As a biologist he transforms the observations of a scientist into carefully crafted, beautiful art about the environment. As an artist, he paints with a palette knife and sometimes his fingers more often than paintbrushes, and will be describing his technique as well as his choice of subject matter in the art talk. Artist on the Byway Gallery includes several of John’s large cloud paintings, one of his most iconic works in the gallery’s “Lake and Sky Room”. Susan received her Fine Arts Degree in the 60’s, when abstract
expressionism was in full force, and found it suited her love of color, line, and texture very well. With a current resurgence of interest in abstract art, Susan has stepped up her decades of experimentation with color and texture to combine new materials into her acrylic paintings that are inspired by living in the Peninsula’s natural beauty: bark, rocks, pebbles, driftwood, grasses, plant stems, and more. Susan has created a series of paintings about climate change that are meant to provide messages about the trees, forest, beaches, water, lake, oceans, birds, and more. Her art talk will provide personalized interaction with one or more of her works, for interested visitors.

MICHELE AUGER, TURTLE TRACKS STUDIO
DEMOS SEPT 9, 13 & 16
FACEBOOK.COM/TURTLETRACKSSTUDIO
Michele Auger has lived, worked, played and created art on Madeline Island year round for 43 years. The island has offered endless inspiration for her work. Painted paper collage weaves
together my passion for texture, color, patterns, and whimsy. Auger is a professional weaver, specializing in custom work. She weaves a variety of pieces ranging from wall hangings, shawls, scarves, pillows, runners, all sizes and types of rugs, both rag and wool. Over the years, Auger longed for another medium so she started to paint. Watercolor was her first introduction, but soon needed more. After years of instruction and not getting the results she wanted, Auger took a class at the Madeline Island School of the Arts on painted paper collage knew she found her medium. Now, Auger spends her creative time doing both weaving and collaging. They each give her a different kind of joy.
HERBSTER
HERBSTER STUDIO ART TOUR
WORKSHOPS SEPT 10-12 & 14-17
The Herbster Studio Art Tour (HSAT) has been a Herbster community event since 2009. The studio tour has always been on the third weekend in August. In 2023, those dates are August 19-20, but for the second time HSAT will include a follow-up educational component during the week of September 9 to September 17, which will involve instruction from each of the artists. This September educational component is called Art Escape, organized by the Bayfield
Chamber and Visitor Bureau.
These 7 HSAT artists feel strongly about the fine arts and about encouraging quality and creativity in the arts. For example, Susan McDonald will teach a class on botanical watercolor. Sara Mustonen will provide a demo on the ancient Native American art of ply-split braiding. Scott Sample will offer a demonstration on the fundamentals of drawing. Diana O’Brien will offer a class on her techniques in wet on wet watercolor painting. Dale Paulson will conduct a demo on
ARTIST PROFILES
his woodturning techniques. Sandra Starck will conduct a demo on all the steps involved in creating a woodcut relief print. Jane Herrick will lead a discussion about artistic abstraction across various mediums in the visual arts.
So why has the small community of Herbster attracted so many fine artists? Has the creative inspiration that flows from each artist come from something naturally within them or something inspired from the outside? Each artist would have a different perspective on that question, but it is certain that creative artists will create and produce artwork wherever they find themselves, simply because they must. Many artists will claim that they get their inspiration from nature. For some artists, that inspiration comes from their interest in the materials themselves, for others it is the need to solve a problem on canvas, for others it is the sheer joy of capturing new colors, or new patterns, or new images and placing it in a new context. Or all these together. Either way, a creative artist will find a way to be imaginative, experimental, expressive, and innovative. And Herbster is happy to have them.

TONJA VOJACEK SELL OPEN HOUSE EVERY DAY OF ART ESCAPE DOARTWORX.COM
Tonja Vojacek Sell is a Wisconsin native and daughter of Anton (Jim) and Sue Vojacek, stained and blownglass artisans who operate the Oulu Glass Gallery. She attended the Milwaukee School of Art, where she studied fine arts, drawing, and illustration.
Tonja lives with her family in the home, studio, gallery, & teaching studio they built together near Lake Superior. She works in many different mediums; including oil, acrylic, watercolor, ceramic, glass, felt and more. Tonja has been represented by galleries across the country and her work is in multiple private collections in the US and Internationally. She has created murals for the Minnesota Discovery Center and the Carnegie Foundation at the Two Harbors Public Library. Tonja teaches classes and hosts artists retreats across the US, online and in her studio in Oulu, WI Stop in during the Art Escape to get a preview of the new art gallery officially opening in 2024, tour the ceramic and drawing and painting studios, meet the artist and tour the lovely gardens.
Here is what Sell says about her work: Though a native of rural Wisconsin, my work is also Influenced by extensive travel in the U.S. and internationally. My pieces are often described as narrative. I have a background in illustration and enjoy the challenge of visual communication. My paintings invite the viewer to enter the scene to share a fleeting moment in time. I define my work as realist expressionism. It is predominantly subject based, but to me, use of color, inclusion of texture and application of paint has equal importance to the subjects themselves. The subject is the vehicle for the painting process. I try to give the viewer enough information to connect with the scene, but encourage them to finish the story themselves. I am not interested in replicating, rather, responding to my subjects.
