FROM OUR MAYOR: Bayfield is a special place for both visitors and residents. Our location on the shores of Lake Superior, the greatest of all the Great Lakes, provides us with a perspective that we describe as “Where the Water Meets the Soul”. We are the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a beautiful archipelago of enchanting islands. A sustainable and healthy environment is our promise to Lake Superior, ourselves and our surrounding countryside. We chose to be an Eco-Municipality and we are the Greenest Community in Wisconsin. Bayfield is an affordable destination with wonderful restaurants, comfortable lodging, sandy beaches, orchards, berry farms, freshly caught fish, great shopping, challenging golf, sailing, boating, fishing, camping, hunting, xc and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and ice roads; all of which are part of our unique offering. Visit Bayfield and the Great Lake and although you may not want to leave, you will now understand the pull to return, to again see Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.

The area’s shopkeepers, gallery owners, restauranteurs and innkeepers, known for longstanding tradition of northland hospitality, welcome visitors. Day-trippers and overnight travelers can browse Bayfield’s charming shops for fashionable clothing and jewelry, unique gifts, homemade candy and fudge, vintage books, antiques and artwork. Visitors will find Bayfield accommodations are as varied as their own tastes and wishes. Whether looking for a rustic hideaway cabin, a cozy room with a view, an elegant suite, a fully appointed townhouse on the lake, or a historic or contemporary bed & breakfast, guests are well served. And, of course, well fed: Bayfield’s restaurants and eateries have been included on the Milwaukee JournalSentinel’s ten best list, written up in the New York Times as well as Bon Appétit, and featured in Gourmet

magazine. Cuisine ranges from home cooking to gourmet, and area chefs take inspiration from Bayfield’s harvest of berries, fish and apples, adding to traditional chowders, blueberry pancakes, fresh pies and dishes of their own devising, and local specialties like sautéed whitefish livers. Finally, what’s better than bringing a little part of Bayfield home by purchasing specialties such as pies, apple cider donuts, smoked and fresh fish, jellies, jams, cider, pastries, and fruits. A side trip to the South Shore of Lake Superior is a must for visitors visiting the Chequamegon Bay area for the first time. The beauty of the shoreline and the quaint little fishing villages of Cornucopia, Herbster and Port Wing, are fun and interesting. On your way north from Bayfield on Highway 13, you’ll come upon the first South Shore community, Cornucopia, in approximately 20 miles. Here is the western entrance to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This small, friendly village with its picturesque harbor is famous for clean sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets. Some of the distinctive old fishing sheds on the waterfront have been converted to wonderful gift shops and galleries.

Located a few miles further along on Highway 13 and beach, Herbster is the next community and you will see the area’s beauty as you begin your descent into the Cranberry River Valley. Further along on Highway 13 is the village of Port Wing which is reminiscent of a New England fishing village. In the center of the town is the community park with a gazebo made from the bell tower of the old South Shore School. bayfield visitor guide 2011

From the arrival of the Anishanabe (Ojibwe) on Madeline Island to the boom years of big lumber and commercial fishing, history has left its mark on the Bayfield Peninsula. Bayfield’s rich history can be enjoyed by visiting the Bayfield and Madeline Island Historical Museums, and Bayfield’s Maritime Museum, or by experiencing a walking tour that includes a variety of historical buildings. Many of Bayfield’s historical homes now operate as bedand-breakfasts or inns, treating guests to the atmosphere of 19th-century life in Bayfield.

Bayfield’s own Virginia Hirsch offers several heritage walking tours. See page 49 for schedule.

The distinctive Lake Superior fishing tug was a common sight in the Bayfield Harbor until commercial fishing began a sharp decline in the 1950’s. Now the old fish tugs are greatly outnumbered by sleek pleasure craft. Through the years, the rise and fall of the fortunes of commercial fishing, quarrying, lumbering, and the comings and goings of a diverse assortment of settlers and visitors, have given Bayfield its unique character.

Just a 20-minute ferry ride away, Madeline Island offers great restaurants and shopping plus a historical museum that chronicles Native American life, the fur trade and arrival of missionaries, 19th century fishing, logging, brownstone mining, and maritime lore. Madeline Island also offers some of the area’s most beautiful parks, camping, and an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course.
