FROM OUR MAYOR: Bayfield is a small community on the south shore of Lake Superior, the greatest of all the Great Lakes, where our location provides us a perspective that we describe as “Where the Water Meets the Soul.” We are home to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a beautiful archipelago of enchanting islands. A sustainable and healthy environment is our promise to Lake Superior, our community, and our surrounding countryside. Our hard work in caring for our environment earned Bayfield recognition as a Green Tier Legacy Community, Bird City USA, Tree City USA, the Governor’s Tourism Award for Sustainability, WI Water Star Community along with Travel Green and WI Clean Marina certification.

In 2013, WI Hwy 13 was repaved throughout Bayfield; In addition we installed 6 blocks of vintage street lights with LED lamps. In 2014 we plan to restore 3 blocks of streets to the original brick of 125 years ago along with vintage LED street lighting.

Our Broad Street Swimming Beach will undergo a green and sustainable restoration in the spring of 2014 that will improve the health of Lake Superior by introducing native beach grass and rain gardens. We are pleased to be achieving the delicate balance of a healthy environment, a healthy community and a healthy local economy. Orchards, local food and fresh Lake Superior fish, interesting restaurants, comfortable lodging, 22 islands, boats and kayaks, sparkling blue water, biking and hiking trails, a snowy winter and an ice road all help to define our unique community. We invite you to visit Bayfield and the greatest of all the Great Lakes, and although you may not want to leave, you will understand the pull to return, to come back to Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.

Bayfield –
A Pioneer in Sustainability
When you visit Bayfield, you’re able to enjoy boundless natural beauty that is as pristine and unspoiled today as it was centuries ago. That’s only possible through Bayfield’s unwavering, community-wide commitment to minimizing our environmental impact. The following are just a few of the steps individual Bayfield businesses are taking toward realizing this goal: • Apple Hill Orchard uses stormwater runoff for irrigation • Artesian House Bed & Breakfast has added solar panels for hot water heating • Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has installed cleaner 4-stroke engines in its snowmobiles and boats • Dreamcatcher Sailing is experimenting with replacing diesel auxiliary engines with renewable electric power • Pinehurst Inn Bed & Breakfast provides free, reusable water bottles for guests • The Bayfield community and Bayfield Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Bureau were the first recipients of the Governor's Tourism Sustainability Award at the 2011 Wisconsin Governor's Tourism Conference.
Travel Green Wisconsin is a certification process that guides and inspires businesses to find ways to reduce their environmental impact. Bayfield is proud to be home to more Travel Green certified businesses than any city in the state, including: Lodging Antique Garden Inn The Artesian House LLC Bayfield Inn Cooper Hill House Cozy Nook B&B Harbor’s Edge Motel Hauser’s Bayfield Cabin The Inn on Madeline Island Island View Inn & Cottage Old Rittenhouse Inn Pinehurst Inn Seagull Bay Motel Wildflower Cottage 40 Winfield Inn & Gardens Adventures & Attractions Animaashi Sailing Apostle Highlands Golf Course Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Bayfield Apple Festival

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Byway received its official State of Wisconsin confirmation in fall of 2012. This 70-mile stretch of STH 13 follows the shoreline of Lake Superior from the roundabout intersection of US 2 and STH13 to the intersection of County Road H and STH13 in the Town of Cloverland. It is a snapshot of the geological, historical, cultural, ecological and recreational diversity of the region, featuring breathtaking scenic views of forests, pristine sandy beaches, quaint harbor towns, historic fishing villages and small farms. The beauty of the byway is experienced through the stories and scenery that embrace the majesty of Lake Superior. One billion years in the making, it is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, and the third largest by volume. Sandstone cliffs along the byway showcase millions of years of wave action on this largest of the Great Lakes. National, state, county and local concentrations of natural resource areas are unsurpassed. Becoming a scenic byway is not an easy process. The highway has to be part of the state highway system (a numbered state or federal highway other than an interstate) at
least 30 miles long, offer travelers outstanding scenic views or historic resources combined with recreational and cultural attributes, and be initiated and supported by local groups and governments. Twelve local governments and the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa cooperated to make the byway a reality. Visit the byway’s website at www.lakesuperiorbyway.org. for more information and links to all of the sites mentioned here. There’s also a printable brochure and map available on the website that can be used for a self-guided tour of the byway.

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway will take you on a breathtaking side trip to the South Shore of Lake Superior. It is a must for visitors visiting the Chequamegon Bay area for the first time. The beauty of the shoreline and the quaint little fishing villages of Cornucopia, Herbster and Port Wing, are fun and interesting. On your way north from Bayfield on Highway 13, you’ll come upon the first South Shore community, Cornucopia, in approximately 20 miles. Here is the western entrance to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This small, friendly village with its picturesque harbor is famous for clean sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets. Some of the distinctive old fishing sheds on the waterfront have been converted to wonderful gift shops and galleries. page 40

Located a few miles further along on Highway 13 and beach, Herbster is the next community and you will see the area’s beauty as you begin your descent into the Cranberry River Valley. Further along on Highway 13 is the village of Port Wing which is reminiscent of a New England fishing village. In the center of the town is the community park with a gazebo made from the bell tower of the old South Shore School.

From the arrival of the Anishanaabe (Ojibwe) on Madeline Island to the boom years of big lumber and commercial fishing, history has left its mark on the Bayfield Peninsula. Bayfield’s rich history can be enjoyed by visiting the Bayfield Heritage and Maritime Museums or by experiencing a walking tour that includes a variety of historical buildings. Many of Bayfield’s historical homes now operate as bedand-breakfasts or inns, treating guests to the atmosphere of 19th-century life in Bayfield. Through the years, the rise and fall of the fortunes of commercial fishing, quarrying, lumbering, and the comings and goings of a diverse assortment of settlers and visitors, have given Bayfield its unique character. Pictured at bottom left - Bayfield’s own Virginia Hirsch offers several heritage walking tours. See our ads on page 30 and 49 for more information.

Just a 20-minute ferry ride away, Madeline Island offers great restaurants and shopping plus a historical museum that chronicles Native American life, the fur trade and arrival of missionaries, 19th century fishing, logging, brownstone mining, and maritime lore. Madeline Island has a rich arts community with art galleries, artist’s studios, a renowned music camp, and one of the top ranked art and craft schools in the country—Madeline Island School of the Arts. The Island also offers some of the area’s most beautiful parks, camping, a world class marina, and an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course.
