From Our Mayor: Bayfield is a small community on the south shore of Lake Superior, the greatest of all the Great Lakes, where our location provides us a perspective that we describe as “Where the Water Meets the Soul”. Years of hard work in caring for the environment has earned Bayfield recognition as a Green Tier Legacy Community, Energy Independent Community, Bird City USA, Tree City USA, the Governor’s Tourism Award for Sustainability, WI Water Star Community along with Travel Green and WI Clean Marina certification. We are pleased to be achieving the delicate balance of a healthy environment, a healthy community and a healthy local economy.

We just finished restoring 3 of our historic downtown brick streets with original bricks from 1920 and added LED historic post top light poles. We also developed a new Waterfront Walk with a series of interpretive markers to introduce you to Bayfield’s past along the shores of Lake Superior.

We are home to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a beautiful archipelago of enchanting islands. A sustainable and healthy environment is our promise to Lake Superior, our community, our visitors and our surrounding countryside.

Editor: David M Eades, Bayfield Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Bureau

Orchards, local food and fresh Lake Superior fish, interesting restaurants, alluring retail shops, artists and galleries, comfortable lodging, 22 islands, boats and kayaks, sparkling blue water, biking and hiking trails, a snowy winter, an ice road and our internationally recognized “Ice Caves” all help to define our unique community. We are proud that the Smithsonian recognized Bayfield as one of the “Best Small Towns in America” and to have Canoe and Kayak Magazine recommend us as one of the “Best Paddling Towns in North America”. We invite you to visit Bayfield and the greatest of all the Great Lakes and although you may not want to leave, you will understand the pull to return, to come back to Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.

Š Grandon Harris Photo

There is a reason to celebrate every season in Bayfield. From the thrilling excitement of the Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race to the traditional Blessing of the Fleet, you will find ways to make lifelong memories all year long.

page 24 y bayfield.org

20th annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race • February 6 & 7

Join us in for an extraordinary wintertime adventure at this shorter and, some would add, much more festive version of the famous Iditarod sled dog race. Pick your favorite sled dog team and cheer them on from start to finish as they race the challenging course of hills and flats, through the forests of the Bayfield Peninsula. Keep warm with coffee and hot chocolate beside the bonfire as you wait for your team to return. It’s an unforgettable experience for young and old, spectator and racer alike. And an absolute must for any winter sports enthusiasts or dog lover! bayfield.org/aisdr

Bayfield in Bloom • May 13–June 12

Admire over 50,000 blooming daffodils in town, explore the apple orchards bursting into rosy blossom and discover a vibrant mosaic of roadside lupine along rural lanes during our month-long celebration of spring. Bayfield in Bloom kicks off with a live WPR Broadcast of Garden Talk with Larry Mueller and a Garden Expo featuring local vendors selling garden related goods. Everything from succulents to CSA subscriptions will be available at the historic Lakeside Pavilion in downtown Bayfield. Visitors are invited in and given the opportunity to chat with local gardeners during the annual Garden Tours. Come to gather design ideas or be inspired by the spectacular water features, flower garden arrangements and exquisite plant varieties on display. History comes to life at the traditional Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. Honor the fishing families of the community and watch as commercial tugs, powerboats, sailboats, excursion crafts, kayaks and rowboats parade through Bayfield’s City Harbor. As they pass by the tip of the pier, clergy from the Apostle Islands community grant each vessel a blessing for safe passage and a prosperous season on Lake Superior.

Festival of Arts & Gallery Tour • July 16 & 17

Artists from throughout the Midwest will gather for Bayfield’s 53rd annual Festival of Arts. This juried arts & crafts show is held in Memorial Park on the scenic shores of Lake Superior in downtown Bayfield. Visitors will find a unique selection of pottery, painting, jewelry, sculpture, glass works, wood carvings, photography and more. Events will include a live art auction, fine art vendors and local gallery tours and demonstrations. bayfield.org/foa

A celebration of the autumn harvest and Bayfield’s agricultural heritage, tour the orchards and wineries, peruse fine arts and crafts while sampling local foods at more than 60 food booths. Special events include the crowning of the Apple Queen, a Farm Market featuring local producers, Saturday evening fish fry at the historic Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion and the Peel Out 5K Trail Run at Mt. Ashwabay. The festival culminates with the Grand Parade, featuring a mass band with 400 participants playing On Wisconsin, marching down historic Rittenhouse Avenue, to Lake Superior. bayfield.org/applefestival

In addition, Big Top Chautauqua, Sidekick Theatre and community theater group, The Groundlings, offer a variety of musical and theatrical productions that keep Bayfield visitors toe-tapping and entertained

throughout the year. The Bayfield Festival of Arts and Gallery Tour, which features over a dozen local galleries and studios, takes place the third weekend in July, annually. Additionally, the Holiday Spirit Gallery Tour, the first Saturday in December, provides the opportunity to buy handcrafted items for everyone on your wish list!

Big Top Chautauqua, called the “Carnegie Hall of Tent Shows,” presents live performances featuring internationally acclaimed artists, original historic musicals, and regional musicians under a 950-capacity blue and white canvas tent.

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Byway received its official State of Wisconsin confirmation in fall of 2012. This 70-mile stretch of STH 13 follows the shoreline of Lake Superior from the roundabout intersection of US 2 and STH13 to the intersection of County Road H and STH13 in the Town of Cloverland. It is a snapshot of the geological, historical, cultural, ecological and recreational diversity of the region, featuring breathtaking scenic views of forests, pristine sandy beaches, quaint harbor towns, historic fishing villages and small farms. The beauty of the byway is experienced through the stories and scenery that embrace the majesty of Lake Superior. One billion years in the making, it is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, and the third largest by volume. Sandstone cliffs along the byway showcase millions of years of wave action on this largest of the Great Lakes. National, state, county and local concentrations of natural resource areas are unsurpassed. Becoming a scenic byway is not an easy process. The highway has to be part of the state highway system (a numbered state or federal highway other than an interstate) at

least 30 miles long, offer travelers outstanding scenic views or historic resources combined with recreational and cultural attributes, and be initiated and supported by local groups and governments. Twelve local governments and the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa cooperated to make the byway a reality. Visit the byway’s website at www.lakesuperiorbyway.org. for more information and links to all of the sites mentioned here. There’s also a printable brochure and map available on the website that can be used for a self-guided tour of the byway. bayfield visitor guide 2016 y page 37

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway will take you on a breathtaking side trip to the South Shore of Lake Superior. It is a must for visitors visiting the Chequamegon Bay area for the first time. The beauty of the shoreline and the quaint little fishing villages of Cornucopia, Herbster and Port Wing, are fun and interesting. On your way north from Bayfield on Highway 13, you’ll come upon the first South Shore community, Cornucopia, in approximately 20 miles. Here is the western entrance to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This small, friendly village with its picturesque harbor is famous for clean sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets. Some of the distinctive old fishing sheds on the waterfront have been converted to wonderful gift shops and galleries.

page 40 y bayfield.org

Located a few miles further along on Highway 13 and beach, Herbster is the next community and you will see the area’s beauty as you begin your descent into the Cranberry River Valley. Further along on Highway 13 is the village of Port Wing which is reminiscent of a New England fishing village. In the center of the town is the community park with a gazebo made from the bell tower of the old South Shore School.

From the arrival of the Anishanaabe (Ojibwe) on Madeline Island to the boom years of big lumber and commercial fishing, history has left its mark on the Bayfield Peninsula. Bayfield’s rich history can be enjoyed by visiting the Bayfield Heritage and Maritime Museums or by experiencing a walking tour that includes a variety of historical buildings. Many of Bayfield’s historical homes now operate as bed-and-breakfasts or inns, treating guests to the atmosphere of 19th-century life in Bayfield. Commissioned in 1903, and officially opened in 1904, the Bayfield Carnegie Library is one of the oldest free public library in Wisconsin. Featuring a collection of over 19,000 items, a book club, a writer’s group, Movie Nights and other special events throughout the year, this historic building is open year-round. Be sure to stop in for a visit. Through the years, the rise and fall of the fortunes of commercial fishing, quarrying, lumbering, and the comings and goings of a diverse assortment of settlers and visitors, have given Bayfield its unique character. Bayfield Heritage Tours offer several historical walking tours. See ads on pages 36 and 50 for more information.

Just a 20-minute ferry ride away, Madeline Island offers great restaurants and shopping plus a historical museum that chronicles Native American life, the fur trade and arrival of missionaries, 19th century fishing, logging, brownstone mining, and maritime lore. Madeline Island has a rich arts community with art galleries, artist’s studios, a renowned music camp, and one of the top ranked art and craft schools in the country—Madeline Island School of the Arts. The Island also offers some of the area’s most beautiful parks, camping, a world class marina, and an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course.

page 44 y bayfield.org

Rent a bicycle and discover The Island at your own pace. The terrain is relatively flat and paved roads make for an enjoyable cycling experience. Take a kayak tour to Big Bay State Park, where you can explore the large inland lagoon or venture out onto Lake Superior to check out the nearby sea caves and sandstone bluffs. Rentals are available in downtown La Pointe.

In celebration of the 100th birthday of the National Park Service in 2016, Bayfield and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore are joining a movement to spread the word about the inspirational stories that the national parks tell, our country’s natural resources, and our diverse cultural heritage. Together, we join other parks, programs and partners across the country to encourage everyone to find their park and share their stories online at FindYourPark.com. Find Your Park is a public awareness and education campaign celebrating the milestone centennial anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016 and setting the stage for its second century of service. Find Your Park invites the public to see that a national park can be more than a place–it can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride. Beyond vast landscapes, the campaign highlights historical, urban, and cultural parks, as well as the National Park Service programs that protect, preserve and share nature, culture, and history in communities nationwide.

working in your community through education programs, community assistance projects, and more. It’s about state parks, local parks, trails, museums, historic sites, and the many ways that the American public can connect with history and culture, enjoy nature, and make new discoveries. Find Your Park is supported by the National Park Service’s nonprofit partner, the National Park Foundation. For more information, visit NationalParks.org.
