Int One thing about Kuwait that has always kind of confused me is the fact that, even though it’s pretty famous (regionally and internationally) for the slow, relaxed, pace of life here, time actually flies. Before you know it the weekend is over, the month is over, winter is over, and then summer is over, and you press restart and do it all again! Maybe it’s the fact that there are basically only two seasons, not four? Or maybe it’s the paralyzing traffic? Or maybe it’s because everyone’s workloads are getting bigger and bigger, which means everyone is running around frantically all the time, with no time to chill? Whatever it is, I don’t like it, and really miss the ‘good old days’ when weekends were so loooooooong, that you actually got bored by the end of them!
The bazaar team...
But on the other hand, the cultural scene is so much richer, there are more restaurants to try out, things to do and places to be. Believe us, we have been all over the place this month. But best of all there is definitely more awareness of what really matters.
Design
April is Earth Month, and the 22nd marks the worldwide celebration of Earth Day. On this little spot of Earth, however, we hopped on the local bus with Kuwait Commute, and it was a great experience. If more of us took the bus, we could collectively help combat the traffic and environment problem. And despite what a lot of people say that Kuwait lacks in beautiful scenic nature-scapes, we took the gorgeous new Porsche Macan to Mutlaa’ for a photoshoot. Perhaps it’s this season’s mind boggling rains, but you can see for yourself how beautiful Kuwait’s desert can be. So, we have to work together to protect it. The stats are scary, and if you have seen our Re Use x The Scientific Center of Kuwait infographic you will know what we mean. We know we can help by shopping sustainably from the H&M Conscious Exclusive collection and by eating at restaurants that keep their packaging eco-friendly, both of which are great features you can check out in this issue. The increase in cultural spaces keeps us busy, we got a special tour of Promenade Culture Center. Whether you need to host a huge event or need a smaller venue for a workshop, there is a fully-equipped room that will suit your needs. They are already hosting Niqashna, Insijam and many other groups. Safe spaces for discussion and debate are the best way for all of us to move forward as a society. This month, we bring you our third installment of new collections of new designers breaking into Harvey Nichols. bazaar Studios is where all the exciting things happen, and it is where we get to flex our creative muscles. We’ve just barely scratched the surface of what is in this issue. Meet Faisal Buresli, our Up Close and Personal candidate who is all about a new approach to fitness that gets better results without injury. Truth or Dare this month features Sarah Al-Farhan, a local illustrator and graphic designer who wants to push her own boundaries to reach more creative heights. Just like us, we want to make sure we are always on the move, doing, trying and being in all the places at once. I guess maybe I shouldn’t be complaining about how quickly time flies. I am just busier than ever and deep down, I really like it better that way. Happy reading! Ahmed El-adly

THE PASSIONS OF A DESIGNER
Sarah Alfarhan’s love for illustrations, design, and more! By bazaar staff
Illustrator and graphic designer, Sarah Alfarhan, not only has experience under her belt, but is also a person with intriguing interests and amazing projects. She was originally based in the States, and then in Dubai, but is now back to her hometown of Kuwait, working as a graphic designer with Sharaf Studio. Her passion for illustration, design, and printmaking led Sarah to dwell on topics and specific inspirations that strongly feature in her personal projects. Sarah has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from The University of the Arts from Philadelphia, PA, and a Master’s degree in Communication Design from Pratt Institute, NYC, NY. At 30-years-old, Sarah’s background and experience is apparent with every 26
[Continued...]
project. Her work comes in the form of print and design, and both are heavily influenced by illustration. Sarah tries to combine the elements of both graphic design and illustration in her work as much as she could, stating, “I am a print designer, and in my personal practice I make books and 'zines. I want people to hold my work in their hands, I want them to interact with it, and books present the ideal format to fuse both graphic design and illustration.” One of Sarah’s projects, titled Chairs, is a risograph printed book that compiles all the chair drawings she drew on a daily basis. “I wanted to experiment with digital brushes on the iPad, and how they reproduced in riso printing. I played a bit with the overlapping colors, and mixing up the filled in colors with line drawings,” she says. Sarah designed, printed, folded, collated, and bound the book herself, a process spanning three different cities; Dubai, Amsterdam, and Maastricht. As this issue’s theme revolves around various sustainability themes, Sarah, interestingly, worked on a publication for the World Council of Peoples for the United Nations. The edition she worked on focuses on
exploring multidimensional facets of sustainability. She was the lead designer amongst a team of designers, and this project arrives as her biggest print run of around 17,000 copies. Indeed, this is a topic worth reading about, while still allowing the viewer to admire the design features within its pages. Another project titled You and I, is a collaboration with Saudi designer Zainab Al-Mashat, where they both explored the notions of being Arabs living in New York. This collab illustrates a topic that extremely interests Sarah, which is languages. “I love languages, I think [if I didn’t study design] I would’ve studied Linguistics or Cognitive Science. It’s really fascinating for me [to see] how the brain works, and how you switch perspectives and world views based on the language that you are using. Language is culture for me, and it is something I enjoy exploring in my work,” says Sarah. Sarah continues to creatively thrive in her work, and merge worlds that are sometimes difficult to merge. Her fascination with print, design, illustration and languages all intersect beautifully into a final product that is eventually held between your hands for your appreciation. In this day and age, we live in a post-
ferrari
online world where we have gone far beyond phrases like “Print is dead”. We continue to go back to the roots of it all, and interact with physical projects such as Sarah’s, where we once again fall in love with that tactile feeling of holding something so beautifully well done, and appreciating all the hard work that has gone into producing it.

FAISAL BURESLI A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO FITNESS By bazaar staff
TFB Performance Center is not a gym. It’s a functional training and performance facility. It’s not about gains, biceps and deadlifts, it’s rather a space and a philosophy for maximizing your body’s abilities, and it’s all powered by Faisal Buresli. Since Faisal’s early childhood, he was constantly on the go, running around and getting into all kinds of shenanigans. From track and field to gymnastics, his family encouraged him to expend his energy in sports and physical activities. However, his all-time favorite was definitely soccer, and he honed his skills until he played with the Kazma, Qadsiya and Salmiya first teams. Unfortunately, a career-ending injury thwarted his dream. But Faisal is not a quitter, and refocused his energy into his work, hoping he could help others achieve and maintain peak performance while avoiding injury. He sought global experts who specialize in rehabilitation, recovery and alternative training techniques to learn more. Faisal recognized 30
that standard gym techniques were inefficient and potentially dangerous. His desire to help others succeed culminated in the TFB Performance Center, now one of the Gulf’s leading fitness centers that identifies areas requiring rehabilitation and transitions members to powerful life-long exercise. TFB provides a holistic and personal approach in a one-of-a-kind creative environment. TFB is exclusive to members, there is no outside signage, and no visible clue of its existence. Walking inside, you instantly get a feel for Faisal’s interests and aesthetic. There’s a wall of mesh covered lockers that hold his extensive sneaker collection, and the other walls are adorned with unique paraphernalia. Everywhere you look is an object that is interesting, functional and unique. It’s urban, industrial but still very human and has a livedin feel. The training facility, features incredible handpainted wall art across almost every surface. You’ll find a mix between zentangle, doodles, graffiti, street art and portraits of inspirational people of influence. Faisal himself spent months creating most of the art that you see. If you didn’t know that TFB was a fitness facility, you could easily think that it’s a creative space—and Faisal argues that helping someone overcome personal challenges and grow stronger mentally and physically is as much art as science. TFB takes a personal approach to every client, tailoring their methods to meet the specific needs and challenges unique to each. Clients are not automatically
accepted, even when they have the capacity to do so. Instead TFB takes the time to meet each prospective client, and only clients that are truly ready to focus, work, make life changes are accepted. During the initial meeting, TFB discusses personal goals and tries to identify whether the prospective client is in the right mindset to commit. The initial assessment, which includes an orthopedic diagnostic, lifestyle evaluation and dietary appraisal is made, helps TFB identify and understand the client’s body-type, and other challenges which is then used to build a tailored and targeted personal program. Progress is continuously monitored, allowing the team to make adjustments as required as they move through different phases of transformation. This also helps ensure clients stay motivated and on track to reach personal goals. The TFB business model is unconventional, and Faisal initially received a lot of pushback on his insistence that this was the only way to properly serve his clientele, and he has proven the critics wrong. Faisal has a long waiting list of clients hoping to secure a spot at TFB. His methods differ from conventional fitness, while traditional gyms focus on building muscle or lifting, TFB is focused on improving body form and performance to achieve flexibility, stability, strength and power while reducing injury. Faisal’s goal is to help as many people as he can, so while he might not be able to accept new clients, he regularly runs educational seminars in partnership with
global experts such as, USA-based Dr. Jacob Harden and Steve Maxwell to maximize the public’s exposure to the latest fitness and performance information. These workshops and hands-on events not only help maintain the high caliber of the TFB team through continuedlearning, but also provide an opportunity for people in the region to gain access to world-leading experts. As for aspiring coaches hoping to work at TFB, Faisal says “Immerse yourself in education. Build your experience. Never stop learning and developing your craft.” Faisal isn’t just a certified Athletic Performance Specialist; he is also a certified Life Coach. After working with clients, he realized that he wasn’t just helping them transform their bodies, he was also a mentor and a guide. He realized he needed more tools and an expanded skillset to better meet the challenges of his clients and began studying what motivates people to make transformational change. Today, he is able to help clients change their mindset from looking at fitness as a task on their to-do list, into a lifestyle that they are passionate about. Transitioning from just a fitness coach to a life coach allowed him to provide a deeper and more holistic approach to his programs to drive real change. A successful mindset is the best gateway to a healthier life. For a happier, healthier life, we all need to re-prioritize and respect our attitude, thoughts and body. You can have all the material possessions in life, but it just doesn’t matter if you are unhealthy. Faisal assures us that there are no shortcuts to success, some people fall for quick fixes including; crash diets, pills, surgery or even just trying to copy what their friends are doing to achieve their goals. Unfortunately, the results are short-lived, but the ill-effects of these gimmicks can be long term. People need to invest their time and resources into options that are smart, healthy, sustainable, targeted and personalized for their body and lifestyle. Faisal took the long and winding road, making mistakes, learning, growing, and moving forward before he arrived at these conclusions. Never one to rest, he keeps stepping out of his comfort zone. To him, TFB is much more than a business, it’s an entity that embodies everything he believes in. His failures have kept him humble, but have also been the stepping stones to his success. As he succinctly put it, “If I don’t know how to do it, I learn. If I make a mistake, I fix it. If I need help, I ask for it. I am also very blessed to have a great support system with my family and friends.” His biggest support group is his family. He considers his father to be his main mentor and his mother his biggest champion; without their encouragement and faith, Faisal doesn’t think that he would have achieved this level of success. He is proud of his work, and that TFB is helping put Kuwait on the map as a destination for fitness education and performance expertise. He has already achieved so much, but he says he is just getting started. He’s up before sunrise every day planning for the future. As a mentor and coach, he’s thinking about new ways to help people be happy—and his creative juices are flowing—he’s already hinted at an upcoming project that ties fitness to fashion, design and of course, personalization. We’re already excited! [Continued...]

a bright day after that. So no matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep ya head up.... and handle it” Tupac Shakur (1971-1996). Where would you most like to live? Kuwait – I love my country. I love to travel but Kuwait is my heart. If you could have any job, what would it be? I’m doing it right now – I remember when I used to pray for the things I am now blessed with. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Making my parents proud. What do you hope for the future? Health and happiness for me, my family and friends. To keep learning and achieving. To continue to live my passion.

KUWAIT COMMUTE
Hop on a bus, start a conversation By bazaar staff
Kuwait Commute is an initiative that is set on the goal of bringing awareness of the public transportation system, and combatting the overall unpleasant, traffic situation in Kuwait. Jassim Al-Awadhi, the founder of this initiative, who’s also purely raising awareness voluntarily, is starting a conversation about sustainability, and the impact Kuwait’s transport system has on the surrounding environment. So, for bazaar tries, we decided to jump on a bus ride with Kuwait Commute, and take this conversation further. We got on bus 15, which stops right next to our office in Salmiya on Salem Al Mubarak Street, with Jassim and Faris Alamer. Also part of Kuwait Commute, Faris holds a degree in Transport Planning & Engineering. This bus was taking us from Salmiya all the way to the city, and on this ride, we learn plenty of information regarding the transportation system in Kuwait. 34
Why buses in particular? As Jassim himself says, “The bus is the main backbone of any public transportation system in the world, and for people to use them, it has to service them. Transportation is part of people’s livelihood, and they have to take it seriously, with a guarantee that it will function.” That’s where it all starts, the operational system in Kuwait is currently chaotic, but fixable. Kuwait Commute tells us that there’s a growing intent amongst transportation companies to improve their services. Most of us don’t really consider buses as a means of transportation, due to other factors allowing us to commute faster, and easily. We are living in the age of speed, where whichever is faster means better. But, have you ever considered how much time and money a person could save while they are on a bus? Imagine yourself stuck in Kuwait’s excruciating traffic while driving, you can’t simply pull up your laptop and start working, but on a bus, you can do so much in just one ride. Public transportation is mainly overlooked due to the concept of convenience. When in fact, it will not only save us from traffic, but it will pave the way to better and safer streets. Kuwait Commute runs on four values, safety, convenience, being environmentally friendly, and inclusive. “These four values are at the core of our project. We aim to have a sustainable model, because
the current transportation model and private transport is not sustainable. There’s a 5% increase in cars, and 2% increase of roads, and this will affect our future and sustainability,” Jassim says. The first step for Kuwait Commute is to raise awareness. There are so many problems regarding transport in Kuwait that are still unsolved. Including, buses not turning up at certain stops, the inconsistency of bus routes, the competition between transport companies, and the whole system on which buses go by needs to be regulated and revamped completely. Fares Alamer emphasizes the importance of transportation and Kuwait Commute, and he tells us, “When it comes to transportation, it’s everybody’s business, everybody in our community, everyone should be involved. Nobody [should be] left behind, and no group of people should be ignored. This is what we’re trying to do, bring transportation to everyone.” The message is clear, raising awareness on this underlooked issue is a must. Public transportation in this community should be the same as taking the bus when we’re traveling abroad, so let’s make it happen! For more information, follow @kuwaitcommute on Instagram. Plus, take a bus ride and use the hashtags #MyCommute and #WhereTheBusAt to document your trip, and raise awareness.

Who will cop the number one crown, and receive the throne of the national championship? We’ll have to see for ourselves! The unique championship follows a two versus two gaming format, which excitingly changes the whole game dynamic. It also supports the players to play with their favorite teammates, using a killer strategy, good communication, and skills unlike before. Competing in teams not only enhances certain skills, but it’s also the perfect kind of emotional support for worst case scenarios. Teams will now focus on how well they can coordinate with their teammates to specifically score two consecutive goals. The 256 participants can give it all, and battle it out in the offline qualifiers, starting from April 25 to 27. Only the top eight teams can head to the on-ground national final, which will be held at 360 Mall on May 2nd. The minimum age requirement to enter the competition is 16, so if your birthday is coming up and you absolutely love gaming, this competition is totally for you! The e-football tournament is a highly interactive competition. It is also based on the classic and global gaming console, PS4. The challenging but also sportive angle of the competition is that teams need to score two consecutive goals in order to win, and possibly qualify to the next stage. TRU3 YOGA
Discover the community-centric yoga studio for a holistic mind, body and soul experience By bazaar staff
The ancient practice of yoga has seen a resurgence in the last few decades, with more people taking an interest in the low-impact and extremely beneficial training. It has slowly evolved into a lifestyle and not just a workout. The philosophy, flows and poses on the mat all stay with you after you are done. The benefits might be visible on the body, but they are also reflected on the mind and the soul. Just ask Sana'a Jaman, PhD. Kuwait born and raised until the age of 17, she moved to the US for her bachelor’s degree and stumbled across yoga while working on her doctorate in environmental engineering at the University of Florida. Dr. Sana'a started with a home practice, and a few months in, she noticed how much better she felt— mentally and physically. Curious, she enrolled in a yoga teacher training program with the intention of exploring the philosophy behind the physical poses she was already coming to love and enjoy. It wasn’t until a year later that she decided to start teaching. Since then, she has been on a wonderful journey of self-discovery, healing, becoming the best version of herself and helping others do the same through her many classes, workshops and international retreats. Now she is back in her hometown and has teamed up with her sister, Dalal, the managing partner and marketing guru. Armed with a B.A. of Mass Communications and specializing in Public Relations, and a minor in Intercultural Communication, Dalal was the perfect person to manage the business side of the studio. Kuwait’s newest and hottest yoga studio is a space designed to serve people suffering from anxiety, depression or trying to find their way through life. Sana'a and Dalal believe that these issues cannot be resolved through physical fitness while neglecting mental and emotional health. Tru3 Yoga wants to inspire yogis to feel at home and at peace by being their true selves. By removing societal boundaries and expectations that create self- doubt, yogis can find self-love that ultimately leads them to a happier, healthier life. Even though they have just opened their doors, they have hit the ground running with a large selection of traditional and specialty yoga classes that cater to everyone, regardless of their needs or abilities. Start your day with the Morning Flow class. It is slow but energizing, and includes gentle asana and pranayama. Asana is the Sanskrit word for pose or posture, while pranyama is the formal practice of controlling your breath. The class will help you set an intention for your day while still giving you time to meditate and welcome peace and joy into your morning. Tru3 Yoga offers a Classical Yoga class that brings you back to the heart of yoga. Simply allow the sounds of your breath to guide your practice. You’ll experience classical Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) 38
A & B, traditional yoga asana held for 5 to 10 breaths, mudras (symbolic hand gestures that facilitate the flow of energy), mantras and meditation. This class is perfect for beginners or people who just want something simple but still want all the benefits of yoga. The beautiful thing about yoga is that it is more than its reputation of being slow and relaxing. It can be energetic, liberating and fiery. The Shakti Flow class will lift your spirit, shift your energy, restore balance and light your inner fire. Spiral into yourself with heat building yoga sequences, tantric breathwork and yoga nidra. This class might not be suitable for everyone, so make sure to check with the teacher before you sign up. For hundreds of years, yoga was a male-only activity. It wasn’t until recently that it has been rebranded as a female-friendly activity. But Tru3 Yoga is for everyone, and there’s a class tailored for men who seek to build strength and gain flexibility—all while learning new ways to relieve tension and stress. It’s a Friday morning class, perfect for setting the tone for the weekend and the week to come. We are very excited about the Hump Day Float & Soar class. We get the Wednesday Blues every week. We’re all of out energy, and have already started dragging our feet. We are sure that the energy boosting asanas, pranayama and moving meditations will help us gear up for weekend. Those of us who prefer to ease into things will appreciate the Hatha Yoga class. It focuses on 12 basic postures, and once you are ready you can move on to a more advanced version of the same pose. Alternatively, you could try Gentle Flow, a soothing class that focuses on easing the body into different postures in order to calm the mind. Moving from one asana to the next is slow, favoring safe alignment and breath. The Reflect & Release class is all about restoration, pranayama and even writing to help you meditate and channel your emotions to the surface in a healthy and safe way. Don’t forget to bring your favorite journal. For a more reflective experience, Meditation class will help calm your mind, settle your body and find a softer focus to your day. The beauty of meditation is that its effects keep going even after you leave the studio. Think of meditation as food for the brain that nourishes our minds to be healthy, vibrant and at ease. For people who are comfortable keeping their head in the clouds, Aerial yoga is a must-try. Scratch that—getting onto the aerial silks (hammock) is something everyone needs to experience at least once in their life. Step off the mat, and into the air. Aerial yoga is an opportunity to gain balance and strength, and the support helps you hold and even lengthen poses to create depth in your practice. The hammock is a gentle way for you to invert, allowing your body to enjoy the benefits of being upside down without the stress. It’s almost like running away and joining the circus. Let go and try something new! We all can benefit from yoga, but children even more so. The Yoga for Kids class is a guided introduction for children for their own yoga journey. Songs, dancing and games are used to keep them engaged and enjoying themselves. Yoga helps build confidence and self- esteem, and also improves their focus and concentration. It’s a great tool for coping with stress and difficult emotions. The physical benefits—like better balance, flexibility, coordination and strength—are just the icing on the cake.
Dr. Sana'a and Dalal Jaman. Image courtesy of Ajeesh Kolladath Planting the seed of balance between mental and physical at an early age will help give them tools they'll need in tomorrow’s world. There are more classes, workshops, retreats and private sessions available. There is definitely something for you at Tru3 Yoga because they have designed the experience to be a community-centric one, bridging the gap between health and happiness. All members of the
community belong, are welcomed, understood, supported and are able to create a powerful yoga practice at whatever stage they are at in their life. Tru3 Yoga is located in Ras Al Salmiya. TRY OUT KAYAKING! Finding peace on the waves By bazaar staff
I don’t need to read Wallace Nichols’ book Blue Mind: How Water Makes You Happier, More Connected and Better at What You Do to know that being at the beach is an instant mood-lifter. The reality is that we, as humans, need to spend more time near large bodies of water. Research shows that “…blue space in both urban and rural settings further enhances and broadens cognitive, emotional, psychological, social, physical, and spiritual benefits.” as stated in the book. This is why I go kayaking during the weekend, whenever the weather and my schedule allows me. I had tried rowing and canoeing as a child but met my first kayak as an adult. My sister invited me (read as: forced me), to join her on a river kayaking excursion. The guide explained what to do. I stepped onto a slim and sleek red polyethylene boat, got handed the long 40
paddle and it only took a few minutes to get oriented. I felt truly liberated. The mechanics of kayaking are really simple. Sit properly so that your feet are anchored in the grooves and make sure that the paddle goes into the water as perpendicularly as you can. Kayaks in general are very stable, so unless you were purposefully trying to tip one over, they don’t. It is an amazing upper-body and core workout. But that is not why I go. I leave my phone in the car, kick off my flip flops and disconnect from the world for an hour. The sound of the paddle blades hitting the water, the resistance as you pull them and the breeze you feel on your face as you are propelled forward create a beautiful rhythm that helps me zone out. For me, it is like meditation. It doesn’t matter how stressed or tired I am, by the time I am done I feel energized and refreshed. It is a low-maintenance activity too. The only thing I bought for kayaking was a pair of exercise gloves so my hands wouldn’t blister.
I rent by the half-hour from Kuwait Watersports. Their rental shack is at the Bidaa’ Movenpick. They have a collection of single and double seater kayaks as well as stand up paddle boards. If you are planning on giving it a go all you need is comfortable clothing. Don’t forget your hat, because even in the cooler months the sun is still bright. And finally, make sure you lather on the sun screen, because nobody wants to be a raisin when they are older. If you have never kayaked before, you can always take a class which are available at the rental place. If you don’t know how to swim or prefer to err on the side of caution you can always ask for a life-vest. That’s all you need to know. Hop in and escape into the big beautiful blue sea, at least until you find your way back to shore. Follow @KuwaitWatersports on Instagram for more information. YALLA MOVE KUWAIT
Our bodies were made for movement By Reem Al Gharabally
There has been a growing subculture in the fitness world that shifts focus away from the amount of weight one can lift or how far one can run. The focus is movement and the patterns the body can create. This philosophy of exercise has gained momentum, through the work of movement guru Ido Portal and other teachers like the founders of Fighting Monkey Linda Kapetanea and Jozef Frucek. “Movers” are multi-disciplinarians, borrowing from different styles. The lines between health, fitness, philosophy and performance get blurred. There is a growing community of “movers” in Kuwait – and the idea of an event that brings them under one roof motivated the organizers to reach out to a group of movers in their circle to create the New Movement Collective Kuwait – a non-hierarchical, grass roots initiative which will bring Kuwait’s first movement festival - Yalla Move Kuwait - to Al Shaheed Park on the 12th of April. Inspired by volunteer-run movement festivals, like Move Copenhagen in Denmark, the intention of Yalla Move Kuwait is to celebrate diversity in movement. Monies received will be spent on charity. Meet some of the presenters and members of the collective, all movement professionals in different disciplines, who will participate in the very first Yalla Move Kuwait. Reece Dunn Reece is a calisthenics coach from London who uses breath as a tool in his training sessions. He will present the breathwork workshop that kicks off the festival. “Calisthenics is a tough sport in terms of disciplining the body to be firm,” Reece says. “I use the breath to help people relax, so they can understand how to be firm. If we can’t relax, we will never really be able to grasp what it feels like to be firm and to do these advanced moves.” Reece has won Calisthenics competitions in both Europe and the US before moving to Kuwait. “The biggest change in my training happened when I started to explore the movement culture. Calisthenics can be very linear and that’s OK. The movement culture is more about spiralling movements,” he says. “As adults we hold a lot of tension in our bodies. If I try to teach children gymnastics, they can learn very fast because they have very little mental emotional and physical fears and blockages in their body. For adults we need something to relax our nervous system and surrender to the process of learning.” Khadija al Sheikh Khadija Al Sheikh, a trained physician, left a career in medicine to pursue her calling as a dance teacher in what she calls a “leap of faith”. “I chose medicine. I was not pushed into it. I enjoyed the journey of medicine and learning about the human body and what it can do and what happens when things go wrong. I understand the value and the role of 42

medicine and surgeries but when I started working in the hospital, I realized it was not my place. It was not how I wanted to heal people.” She does not believe her dance and medicine journeys are fundamentally different. “The link between medicine and dance is healing. Dance is a form of healing. It is a healing of body, mind and soul,” she says. “People reconnect with their bodies through movement, release tension and feel great and happy afterwards. That is the soul and body connection. They challenge their mind by learning the choreography, that’s the mind part.” Khadija has been dancing Hip Hop since the age of 13 and exploring different dance styles from Contemporary, Jazz Funk, House, Krump, Afrobeats and Dancehall. She started teaching dance while still in medical school. She now teaches Hip Hop, Afro Beat and brings her movement practice AbunDANCE to Yalla Move Kuwait which combines dance with yoga and meditation. She creates a safe and encouraging environment that helps her students connect with their bodies, and express themselves through different movement patterns. Chris Johns This will be Sydney-based Jivamukti yoga teacher Chris Johns’ fourth visit to Kuwait where he has run several workshops over the years. Jivamukti Yoga is a dynamic ashtanga-inspired yoga method founded by the influential American yogis Shannon Gannon and David Life. It has gained a devoted following all over the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, Moscow and Sydney. Chris is an Advanced Certified teacher in the method and mentors new teachers. Music is a mainstay of Jivamukti yoga classes and Chris will teach a flowing yoga class at Yalla Move Kuwait choreographed to a deep vibrational electronic sound track. We asked him if movement was the new yoga? “Yoga is the source of all mindful movement,” he says. “Many of us know what it feels like to be in yoga, when we become so immersed in our activity - be that running, surfing, skiing, cycling etc. that all thought stops, and we are totally absorbed in the moment. This is yoga, total flow. All mindful movement, no matter whether it is martial arts, dance or hula hooping can be yoga!” He believes that yoga has a lot to bring to modern movement culture. “By developing the mind-body connection through yoga posture, and by deepening our understanding of the breath through pranayama (breath work) we release unnecessary tension and become more present. This provides us with the perfect groundwork to then explore our passion for movement no matter the modality.” He thinks modern movement has a lot to offer to yoga practitioners. “The new movement culture embraces all forms of movement and understands that each has something to offer. By embracing the new movement culture, yoga practitioners are opening the door to a myriad of pathways to assist them on their journey towards the state of yoga - pure flow!” Visit www.eventat.com/en/e/yalla-move-kuwait to get your ticket. WHAT’S THE ANGLE? The art of the Shattaf shimmy By bazaar staff
The miracle of moist toilet tissue swept the West a decade ago. How had we been cleaning ourselves previously if this wet wipe of the derriere was so, literally, revelatory. This damp discovery has been a game changer but those in the Middle East and Asia have had this ablution down for a while, and even better than using a wipe, using a spray, or Shattaf. Behold, the hose pipe that reaches parts we in the West can only dream of! It was only after an Arab colleague visited London and once back exclaimed his disgust at the lack of the Shattaf there, and hearing my other workmates tut-tut in agreement, that I realized I may be missing out. The recent viral Rehlat videos espousing the virtue of the toilet hose has hilariously brought this topic out into the open. Now, when first faced with the Shattaf, it isn’t always immediately apparent what the contraption should be used for. As with all things culturally mysterious, no-one wants to offend anyone by asking, “what is this” so then rumors start to abound that it’s of religious significance, scarier still to question, or we come up with our own creative 46
uses for it. I like to use mine to hose down the cats’ poop scoop, and have specifically moved the litter tray beside the toilet precisely to utilize the Shattaf in this way. I’d never tried it around my person in the manner it was intended as with my very first exploration into the Shattaf, a powerful jet blasted itself across the cubicle, and I was left desperately mopping up the puddles with the scant toilet paper that was available. I’ll stick to toilet roll thank you. But not every bathroom has toilet paper. I’d rather drip dry clean than drip dry covered like Trump’s Russian hotel-mattress, allegedly. Curiosity having got the better of me at times, I was aware of the different water pressures that you can experience so I’d learned to “try before you apply”. Medium, non-abusive controllable jet; check. Lots of loo roll to mop up the floor; check. Unstaffed toilet so you don’t get any weird stares; check. Let’s give it a gush. I’m not sure what can be achieved with a one meter long hose, but it’s not much depending on which hand you’re used to using; if you pull the hose taught, the water doesn’t come out. Try that, right-handed-wall-mount-left-handed-user. And if you bend forward to look through and see if you’re positioning the nozzle correctly, guaranteed you’ve
left a thigh-gap large enough so that if you make exactly just the wrong angle you’ll be squeezing your bangs dry. Maybe the nozzle isn’t supposed to face up? Also, not everyone has the trim booty of a teenager, a larger flabbier posterior requires some angling of its own so as to be exposed eye to eye so to speak. I’m almost positive that you’re not supposed to give yourself an enema, so perhaps this isn’t the way to do it either. Perhaps you’re supposed to approach and spray front to back, like you’re supposed to wipe…boys I shudder to think of the ricochet already, and ladies, well… As with all things, practice makes perfect, and those brought up with the Shattaf as a daily tool will have mastered the art of it. For you westernexpats though, good luck with the exploration. It’s a cleaner, more environmentally friendly choice to make. And you can use the dinars you’d have spent on so much toilet paper on something reusable or recyclable instead. Perhaps we can all give the Shattaf a go at least once during Earth month #washvswipe.

TO KNEAD OR NOT TO KNEAD
Zoe Francois’ journey from pastry chef to star bread baker and author By Deepa Pant
Bread – who doesn’t ‘loaf’ it? For Zoe Francois, baking a crusty loaf of bread is akin to meditation. The American pastry chef, food blogger, and successful cookbook author is best-known for thinking up recipes geared towards people who may not have hours to spend baking bread. Following Zoe’s easy-to-follow instructions, nonbakers turn bakers and busy millennials can start baking wholesome, delicious bread at home. She talks to bazaar about her journey from working in kitchens to becoming a cookbook author and tells us how to overcome the fear of failure in the kitchen. Zoe Francois, the queen of bread baking, studied pastry at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York. She has worked in restaurants and now writes cookbooks. The co-author of the best-selling cookbook series Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day shows no sign of slowing down. She speaks to bazaar about her path from becoming a bread baker to cookbook author and much, much more. Please tell bazaar's readers a little bit about your journey from pastry chef to cookbook author and bread baker extraordinaire. After I left professional kitchens to raise my family, I started writing cookbooks. It was a way to stay in the industry but bake and create the book on my own schedule, around the needs of my children. At the time I thought it would just be one book, but 14 years later my co-author and I have written seven books in our Breadin5 series. What do you enjoy most about baking bread? Baking, in general, relaxes me. The process of creating a loaf of bread or an ornate pastry is almost meditative. You have to be in the moment and paying attention to what is right in front of you or the project can get away from you. Our bread recipes were developed for people who are busy and may not have hours to spend on a loaf of bread, but even though it is so fast, I still find it relaxing to work with the dough. What's your favorite kind of bread to a) eat and b) bake? Oh, that just depends on my mood. I love everything from a rich loaf of chocolate Babka to a thin crispy pizza. They are both fun to make and eat and both are just as easy with our method. What three tips would you give someone baking her or his first loaf of bread? Our method of bread baking was developed for people who had never baked bread, so it is the perfect place to start. 1. The key is to have fun! Baking is such a joy and you can taste that in the finished loaf. 2. Have a little patience for the process. Our recipes make about four small loaves per batch, so you have lots of dough
48
[Continued...]
taiba 5
to play with. Your very first loaf may come out perfectly or it may not be quite the shape you wanted, but you can pull out another piece of dough and create another one. 3. Flours don't all behave the same way, so know what kind of flour your recipe is asking for or the recipe may not come out looking like the photo you are going for. What would you tell someone who's left "burnt" after a series of baking fails? Keep trying and be sure you are following a recipe from a trusted source, it may be the recipe and not the baker. If you are a visual learner, try to find a video, so you can see what the process looks like. This is why I started creating videos on Instagram, so people could see the process and make all kinds of recipes. Complete the following sentence. "A day without bread is ... " Joyless! If you couldn't bake bread for a day and had to buy a loaf, which would you choose? (i.e. what's the "healthiest" commercial loaf in your opinion) It depends on my mood or what I am eating. A crusty, whole grain loaf with lots of seeds is a super healthy bread to serve with soup or for making sandwiches but eating a piece of Brioche can also fit into a healthy lifestyle, as long as it is done in moderation. Who are your cooking inspirations? There are so many, but Dorie Greenspan is probably the person who's career I try to emulate. She is immensely talented, creative and kind. What is your favorite ingredient to cook or bake with? I am inspired by walking through the market and seeing beautiful fruit or an unusual ingredient I've not worked with before. A bread or pastry recipe will be created with that ingredient. The seasons change and my inspirations change with them, so there isn't just one favorite. What is your favorite kitchen tool? A stand mixer is probably what I rely on most in the kitchen. What do you always have on hand, either in your fridge or pantry, for a quick snack? Hummus. What would be your dream destination regarding food? I haven't been to Paris in years, so I would love to go back. I also love Asian food, so a trip to Vietnam is on the short list. When outside the kitchen, how do you spend your time? Mostly, I can be found walking my poodles. If your current self could give your past self one sage baking advice, what would it be? Practice makes perfect!

YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE STARTS HERE
The all-new Porsche Macan will impress, on and off the road By bazaar staff
While we’ve all witnessed the unveiling of the stunning, new Porsche Macan last month at Porsche Centre Kuwait-Behbehani Motors Company, taking this beauty out for a road trip in K-town is an entirely different experience! Read on to discover our experience with the Macan in this special edition of bazaar goes cruising.
Our trip across Kuwait simply proved how Porsche has comprehensively upgraded the Macan in terms of design, comfort, connectivity and driving dynamics. The Macan therefore remains the sporty role model in its segment, perfect to take you from home to the office, and then on to the open road. We personally knew we had to take this beauty out to the Mutlaa Ridge to test out what it’s all about, and we were very pleasantly surprised. Taking the car off of the open road and heading up and down the hilly ranges of Mutlaa showcased the Macan’s breadth and ability to handle itself impeccably. There’s also the Off-road Precision app that’s been created by Porsche to give Macan drivers the chance to document, analyze and improve off-road journeys. The “Trip” area functions in the same way as popular running apps for mobile phones. All relevant data is automatically stored when recording is activated: driver, vehicle, route, times, GPS data. Route and elevation profiles are automatically calculated from this, which can then be viewed on a map later on. At the same time, the journey can be recorded as a video either using a smartphone or an externally controlled action cam. The trips can be shared in social media using the “Sharing” function. In the “Personal progress” app mode, the individual driver performance is rewarded with a bonus system. In a tutorial, the app additionally provides new off-road drivers with detailed basic knowledge on how to drive a Macan off-road. The tutorial also contains an overview of off-road parks. Here, drivers can acquire initial experience in off-road driving in a safe environment. The Off-road Precision app is available for iOS and Android. Design wise, and in keeping with the Porsche design DNA, the compact SUV features a threedimensional LED light panel on the rear of the vehicle. LED technology is also standard for the headlights in future. The most eye-catching new features in the interior are the 10.9-inch touchscreen of the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the newly arranged and designed air vents and the optional GT sports steering wheel familiar from the 911. The PCM provides access to new digital functions such as intelligent voice control and the standard online navigation. The range of comfort equipment is extended by Traffic Jam Assist, an ionizer and a heated windscreen, among other things. The Macan comes to the starting line with an enhanced 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This unit produces 180 kW (245 hp) and
delivers a maximum torque of 370 Nm. The Macan S is powered by a new V6 engine with 3.0-litre displacement and twin-scroll turbocharger in central turbo layout. The engine has a power output of 260 kW (354 hp) and a torque of 480 Nm. The sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and the PTM all-wheel drive are perfectly matched to the new engines. Both Macan models are equipped with a gasoline particulate filter and meet the requirements of the emission standard Euro 6d-Temp. The six-cylinder engine of the Macan S is a high-tech power unit. Used for the first time in the Panamera, the engine has been introduced for the Cayenne and now also for the Macan. The most conspicuous feature is the mono turbocharger located in the inner V in the so-called central turbo layout. The short exhaust gas paths between the combustion chambers and the turbocharger ensure outstanding and immediate responsiveness, which perfectly complements a dynamic driving style. The driving dynamics of the Macan remains its core feature. The revamped chassis increases driving pleasure by ensuring a more neutral response while at the same time offering unchanged stability and improved comfort. The new Macan again features mixed tires, which is not typical for the vehicle segment. Like with the Porsche sports cars, it is possible to optimally exploit the driving dynamics advantages of the intelligent PTM all-wheel drive. Newly developed tires with improved performance characteristics also permit improved lateral dynamics. The Sport Chrono Package is now also operated in the Macan by means of the mode switch integrated in the steering wheel. In addition to the Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, it is also possible to select an Individual mode. The driver can store an individual setup here and can activate it directly with the mode switch. The Sport Response button in the middle of the mode switch allows the driver to boost the responsiveness of the Macan for 20 seconds at the push of a button so that the maximum performance is immediately available. The sports car among compact SUVs then reacts to accelerator pedal commands much more spontaneously and achieves optimum acceleration values more quickly. The Sport Response function can be activated any number of times. In combination with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) additionally offers the separately selectable mode PSM Sport. With this especially sport setup, ambitious drivers can get even closer to the limit range of the Macan. The PSM always remains
active in the background. PSM Sport mode can be activated independently of the currently selected driving mode. With the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the Macan opens up all the possibilities of the digital Porsche world. The fullHD touchscreen has increased in size from 7.2 to 10.9 inches. As in the Panamera and Cayenne, the user interface can be adapted to suit personal requirements with predefined tiles. With full connectivity as standard, the new system offers improved online navigation and Porsche Connect Plus. The connection to the navigation-related “Here Cloud” plays an important part here. This provides the driver with up-to-date online data at all times for fast route calculation. Other services and functions include web radio with automatic switching between FM/DAB/online sources, the intelligent Voice Pilot voice control system and also remote functions such as security and emergency services. The Porsche Connect app and Porsche Car Connect app enable the driver to communicate with the Macan via their smartphone. The Off-road Precision app can be used to make the off-road experience in the Macan even more emotionally charged and to document trips. An expanded range of options with enhanced assistance systems is available for new Macan. The optional GT sports steering wheel creates a link to the Porsche 911. A mode switch integrated into the steering wheel – including Sport Response button – is part of the optional Sport Chrono Package that can be fitted in the Macan. The new Traffic Jam Assist uses adaptive cruise control to allow more relaxed driving at speeds of up to 65 km/h. The new system keeps the Macan in lane by targeted steering interventions. The new Porsche Macan and Macan S are now available at Porsche Centre Kuwait. The basic retail prices are as follows: Macan, KWD 16,900 and the Macan S KWD 22,200.

SUSTAINING THE CREATIVE MIND
How to sustain your craft, while still creating for impact By bazaar staff
Practice makes perfect! Though practice is not enough! You need to really think about how to maintain a sustainable impact when it comes to art and design. And if you’re a designer in the creative industry, this couldn’t be more important. What is the cause you’re working for? What are you trying to portray? What style or field of creative design are you interested in? Are you willing to be involved in the art and design world to make this world a better place? Are you producing a product? Or, is it an awareness campaign that you are trying to convey? How can you ensure that this design can be sustainably created and produced? These are questions that you need to ask yourself if you are willing to simplify, and find a solution to a problem in this beautiful world we live in. A question to keep in mind while functioning as a creative, one that can be stressful at times, is how do you creatively sustain your work? From an artist’s perspective, there are various ways to keep your creative inspiration flowing, and I’ll talk about the most common ones that pop up in my life when I am inspired to create the art I love! No, this is not a manual on how you can actually do this, it is just a simple method or train of thought that can be helpful. For starters, you need to trust yourself and instincts, have an open mind and be willing to accept any crazy idea, thought or feeling that creeps up on you. You also need to stop with the self-doubt, or call yourself crazy. You need to love yourself first to give love (and creatively produce), otherwise this might not be the healthiest way to go about sustaining your craft. If you know you have the ultimate design that will change the face of recycling for the future, but seems completely out of reach, never give up. Don’t act on feelings of self-doubt instantly. Instead, break it down and see how you can manifest your thoughts into the real world. For that to happen you need to look within yourself and around you. You need to be in touch with your inner demons, or let’s say angels. Observe everything! Take your time while you are observing, don’t squeeze the thought, just walk with it and see how you feel or think when trying to connect with people or creations of any sort, whether it be music, fashion, architecture and people. At the end of the day, you are not copying anyone else. Inspiration comes from already existing notions and different creative projects, which you would have perceived in a different manner. Channel these thoughts into creation, and think of ways you can sustain your creativity for a longer period of time.
56
Given all of the above, you could easily think that someone so creatively involved, never has moments when they feel stuck. When they think that they can’t produce something anymore. That’s so untrue, we all go through experiences where we think we can continue to creatively produce, only to find that the reality is quite the opposite. Let your brain breathe, but surely never stop practicing your craft, whatever it may be. Write, sketch and take notes as you see colors, shapes and forms that you admire, also try a
bit of research involving the origins of these creations that you admire and then practice, with time you tend to build this understanding and style of how to communicate with your audience to convey the message that you are trying to convey. At the end of the day, these inspirations come from literally everything that surrounds you, around you. Photo by Adam Birkett on Unsplash.

10 STEPS TO HAPPINESS Take action now for a happier existence Dr. Susannah-Joy Schuilenberg
“Family dysfunction rolls down from generation to generation, like a fire in the woods, taking down everything in its path until one person in one generation has the courage to turn and face the flames. That person brings peace to their ancestors and spares the children that follow.” Dr. Terry Real. hap·pi·ness /'hapēnǝs/ noun: the state of being happy. synonyms: contentment, pleasure, contentedness, satisfaction, cheerfulness, cheeriness, merriment, merriness, gaiety, joy, joyfulness, joyousness, joviality, jollity, jolliness, glee, blitheness, carefreeness, gladness, delight, good spirits, high spirits, light-heartedness, good cheer, well-being, enjoyment, felicity. Habitual negative thinking is almost always the consequence of family dysfunction in childhood, traumatic experiences in adolescence and/or adulthood. These experiences hardwire our brains to see the world as dangerous and thus consistently overestimate the potential for catastrophe. When was the last time you felt content? Or a sense of wellbeing that lasted longer than eleven minutes? Here are 10 ways to influence your thinking in the direction of happy....
1. Ditch the negative people. Studies show that listening to others complain causes brain cells to die. Unless you have neurons to spare, hanging out with complainers will definitely impact the quality of your thought life. 58
2. Say "yes" to yourself more often. Ask yourself, "What do I need?" Then go get it, do it, be it, find it. Whatever feeds your soul. 3. Practice saying "No" to others waaaaaaaaay more than you do now. The needs of others are not your responsibility. Say no to one person a day just because you can. 4. Give yourself a break. We're our own worst enemies. Rarely does anyone say anything to us as nasty as we say to ourselves. Tell the Negative Committee that meets in your head to sit down and shut up. 5. Dial down the suspicious vibes. Give the benefit of the doubt and choose to believe others mean well. You know you have good intentions, so why wouldn't it be the same for them? 6. Get off the couch! Get your yourself out there and do some exercise. Get that serotonin and dopamine flowing. Endorphins are endogenous morphine. Want to feel good? Get euphoric on some serious cardio. 7. Take time for your favorite tunes. "Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak" according to William Congreve. Clearly, music can lift your spirits, soothe jangled emotions, and help quiet your mind. 8. Be a good human. Do something random and kind for someone else every day. Volunteer regularly. In other words, get the focus off yourself and do something for others who have no hope of returning the favor.
9. Don't worry, be happy. Anxiety and stress really, really kill the happiness factor. Worry is the process of mentally creating a future you don't want and emotionally freaking out about it now. Stay in the present. Stay connected to NOW. 10. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Find something to be thankful for every day. Express your gratitude for the things you have and for the things you’re thankful you don't have. Tell others thank you. Appreciate the little things, and the big things become less overwhelming. Looking back at the writing I’ve done for bazaar since 2012, it is obvious I believe people want to be happy, and I also clearly believe that not only is that possible, it’s actually within our grasp. Happiness is entirely dependent on the quality of our thinking. In other words, taking responsibility for finding out what you need to be happy, makes “happy” that much more likely. It is impossible to live a positive life with a negative mind and you are the only one who can control your mind. If you don't choose to be mindful of the thoughts that live in your mind, happiness will be fleeting, and life will be much harder than it has to be. No one wants that.

ODE TO THE BAKALA
Discover one of the most important fixtures of life in Kuwait By bazaar staff
When I first moved to Kuwait, I didn’t really think about the quaint little store two buildings away. All I thought was ‘this could be useful’. Little did I know, that this little place has true potential, and how dependable it could be! The baqalah (or bakalah or bakala) as a concept, is not unique to Kuwait. Most countries have their little corner stores, bodegas and neighborhood minimarts. These ones, however, deliver to your door and if you park outside one and honk, someone will come and help you out. They open at 6 am and close at midnight, some even operate almost 24 hours. The first time I realized we had hit the jackpot was when we had run out of milk at home at 6:30 am, a quick phone call and I had a fresh bottle delivered to my door in under five minutes! There are probably four or five in my neighborhood that I could easily walk to. But mostly, I deal with just one and consider it “my baqala”. What makes them stand out is the volume, 60
diversity, and strangeness of their inventory. You name it, they have it! They are usually small, but merchandise lines the shelves from floor to ceiling. Every inch of space is utilized. Bakala storekeepers are super agile, they pay close attention to what their customers want and will quickly stock these requested items. The vegetables, spices and snacks on display usually mirror the taste of locals living in the area. There is a newspaper rack at the doorway, which is completely normal and expected. What’s really unexpected are the giant inflatable toys that hang in the entrance. Who suddenly needs a giant inflatable zebra? Apparently, someone does, and most baqalas in Kuwait will have them on display. You can also find socks, balloons, candles, glitter glue, disposable cutlery and flatware, iTunes cards, frozen chicken, dried shrimp, notebooks, USB thumb drives and other endlessly random items. No matter how strange it might seem, there will come a day when you will need something really weird, but they will probably have it.
The storekeeper is always very accommodating. If I am not happy with something, they will change it right away, no questions asked. On the rare occasion that they don’t have something I need, they will try to find it at the other nearby stores. I am not sure if all baqalas do this, but I am very grateful mine does. They are indispensable during Ramadan. It is comforting to know that almost anything I might need is just a phone call away. I love walking in to pick up a few snacks and fresh fruit too. The overwhelmingly full displays exploding with colorful products that are a visual assault actually help me calm down and switch off after a long day at work. And each shop is different, it is like a surprise every time you visit a different one. The shopkeeper is never fazed by my strange orders or my inability to articulate them. I don’t speak their language, and their grasp of Arabic and English is not the best, but through a lot of pointing, gesturing and mangled words, we have never failed to communicate – they always come through with what I need. If that isn’t a superpower, I don’t know what is.

SO NEAR, SO FORNILLO
Italy in a bottle from & Other Stories By bazaar staff
How do we capture a memory? Olfactory sensation is one of the most effective ways to whisk us immediately back to a special moment. The & Other Stories Stockholm Atelier beauty department was tasked with capturing the idea of ‘vacation’ in a bottle, and created “Fornillo”. Think of Positano and one imagines the Mediterranean, that particular sunlight, the deep greenery on the hillsides and the sands of the Amalfi coast lapped by the salt of the Tyrrhenian Sea. “Fornillo” embodies the very idea of a dreamy holiday, this time represented by the Italian Riviera, and named after one of Positano’s most iconic beaches. The limited-edition fragrance is the latest addition to the brand’s, often location inspired, bath and body range. Detailed thought has been put into the specifically curated blend of notes, bringing together the breeze of fresh fruit markets and salt water washed Mediterranean driftwood, making you dream of endless days on the beach. The fragrance triangle features a blend of notes to bring that endless summer feeling to mind. Building on a base of White Cedarwood and Liquid Musks, the mid notes become more floral with Dewy Apple Blossom, Ocean Orchid and Spring Lilac. The lightest notes of Fresh Cotton and Watermelon top this treasure of a trinity. To add to the luxuriousness of it all, and to enable people to remember your enigmatic presence once you leave the room, you should layer “Fornillo” products. The limited-edition range includes a selection of & Other Stories customers’ favorites but introduces an entirely new product: Body Jelly. As the summer heats up, you will feel as comfortable as you are elegantly fragranced because the Body Jelly is deeply moisturizing, and at the same time lightweight, absorbs quickly and has a non-sticky formula. After starting with the Body Scrub and the Body Wash, continue to layer “Fornillo” by smoothing on the Body Jelly and add the finishing touches with a liberal spritz of the Body Mist, and a roll of the “Fornillo” Perfume Oil on your pulse points to ensure you keep that summer feeling as long as possible. & Other Stories describes the “Fornillo” experience as “Fresh cotton and liquid musks, night -swimming in the glittering orchid waters of Positano.” Get ready to dive in.
The “Fornillo” range features Hand Soap, Body Mist, Body Wash, Body Lotion, Body Scrub, Mini Hand Cream, Perfume Oil as well as the new product Body Jelly. The whole range is now available at the & Other Stories’ stores in Grand Avenue-The Avenues, and on www.stories.com. Follow @andotherstories on Instagram for more lifestyle ideas. MORE FOLLOWERS
Five simple ways to organically grow your Instagram followers By bazaar staff
A majority of you will read this article and ignore my advice. But I am going to continue anyway, because the remainder of you who really want your business to utilize the true power of Instagram in particular, and social media in general will be able to use this as a guide to growing your followers, your engagement, your brand and eventually your revenue. I recently spoke with a senior marketer at a telecom company in Kuwait who will remain unnamed. When I asked him why their brand had 420K followers, but they followed only four accounts on Instagram, he replied saying "We are a big company, why should we follow others, they should follow us." In principle there are two things wrong with that. First, they assume that because they are a big name, they shouldn't follow other brands or individuals; basically, an ego issue. Second, they assume that people have nothing better to do in their lives and are waiting in anticipation for their content; again an ego issue. With people's attention spans reduced to rival that of goldfish these days, assuming that people are waiting for your content is the biggest mistake you can make. Unless you are constantly putting out content that has the propensity of going viral (which is hard to do consistently) you need to interact with other's spaces to be seen. So, here are a few simple tips to help you not only increase your followers on Instagram but jumpstart your engagement. Mind you, it involves more than just posting content, and it will take up more time. But the sooner you understand the importance of putting in the work, the quicker your business will be able to leverage social media to its advantage. First, make sure the description on your account is accurate to what it is that you do. Keep it simple and straightforward. Having a good description and website link improves the chances of Instagram's algorithm "catching" your account and pushing it to non-followers. Second, post content consistently. One of the ways to get featured on Instagram's suggested posts section within people's explore page is to post quality content on a regular basis. Instagram's algorithm trawls the app scouring it for accounts that post regularly and then shows those posts to users. Third, follow the principle of 60/30/10. That means your content needs to be broken down into 60% organic content from your brand which could be either in the form of videos, photographs, images etc. 30% could be about what's going on in your niche or industry or in general. 10% should be promotional posts that inform your followers about latest offers 76
or promotions. These are just guidelines and you can mix it up a bit but don't try and reverse the order and put out 90% of promotional content, that's what sponsored posts are for. Fourth, engage your followers in a human way. What I mean is when someone asks if a particular product is available and it isn't, instead of simply saying no it isn't, try to offer an alternative like a salesperson would at your local retailer. If you get a positive comment, thank the follower and say something nice instead of ignoring them which is what most brands do. Fifth, instead of simply posting content on your account, try to follow others in your niche, popular influencers and local content creators and interact with them on their feeds. Doing this will not only make other users notice you but will also enable Instagram's algorithm to pick up your activity and push you in front of non-followers. This is a very simple idea, which I don't understand why "big brands" don't take advantage of. There is no shame in following other brands or individuals as long as you aren't following thousands of accounts and your account doesn't look like spam. If done correctly, it portrays you as a human entity that cares about others and embodies the 'social' in social media. Remember, Instagram is a social media tool and not an electronic product catalogue. People check out
a flyer to find out about the latest deals on products they're interested in, not to socialize. People sign up to Instagram to discover new places or keep up with their celebrity gossip and not to buy products. To capture and retain their interest, you need to put out content that they will like and want to share. Once you have their attention, you can then attempt to sell them something in a subtle manner and not in the way of an overzealous insurance salesman! If you follow these simple tips and put in the work that is required, I can confidently tell you that you will increase your followers and engagement. Your account will truly become an extension of your brand and not just another channel to sell your wares.

The State Of Kuwait’s Environment 90% of Kuwait’s coral is dead: A survey of the Kuwaiti territorial waters reveals about 90% of corals as dead/dying because of oil spills, water pollution, damage due to fishing nets, pipelines, wreckage, anchors, and boat gears.
500 years for reefs to redevelop: It takes about 500 years for reefs to regain and live again. Most of Kuwait’s preserves are gone and will never be seen by our generation or the next, or even the one after that.
Kuwait air is “unhealthy”: According to international calculations, Kuwait’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is measured at 152. A 152 AQI pronounces Kuwait’s air quality as “unhealthy,” which means, those breathing Kuwaiti air are more likely to develop respiratory problems and diseases like bronchitis and asthma.
Annual increase of 1.5ºC to 2ºC:
Waste management:
CO2 levels emitted by Kuwait’s car traffic situation, unregulated power plants, and petroleum refineries have contributed to rising temperatures in Kuwait. Since the mid-1970s, Kuwait has experienced a 1.5°C to 2°C increase in temperature, which is significantly higher than anywhere else in the world.
In a single year, more than two million tons of solid waste is accumulated in Kuwait. 90% of this waste, is not recycled, but ends up in landfills where it rots for years. Of Kuwait’s total land area (17,820 sq. km), more than 18 sq. km is overtaken by landfills.
Did you know? 250 tons of sewage sludge: Of Kuwait’s six wastewater treatment plants, 250 tons of sewage sludge is produced every day. This sludge could easily be reused as alternative fuel in the cement industry—but isn’t—most of this sludge leaks into our oceans.
Agriculture: Due to rising temperatures and CO2 levels, Kuwait’s meager 1% of arable land area is shrinking! It is already difficult enough to farm on Kuwait’s desert environment and dry soils. Due to car emissions and increased oil production, that cultivatable land is shrinking.

KOTTON
A taste of Japan’s ultimate and sweetest desserts By bazaar staff
Kotton is an adorable cafe and dessert shop based in the heart of Kuwait City. Since its opening at the end of last year, the shop became a popular attraction for city goers. Kotton offers local foodies the very best of Japan’s affinity for perfect desserts, and the café is a brilliant meeting point for those seeking a cozy escape in the city. So when we learned that the type of desserts known in the land of the rising sun are prepared with love right at the corner of K-town’s richest street, Mubarak Al-Kabeer, we had to check it out! The one dessert which took Kuwait by storm and became an instant hit is the Japanese Cheesecake. We absolutely came to this café to try the famous rounded cake serving up fluffiness and light textures, which is also Kotton’s specialty, and the dessert that was first introduced on their menu. One bite is never enough, as it will instantly disappear—this is the creamy cheesecake that is meant to melt in the mouth. The textures and proportions of Kotton’s cheesecake options are so expertly made, we personally didn’t need to include any sauces to truly indulge ourselves in the creaminess of the original cheesecake. But for those who would like an extra kick of sweetness, they provide six different sauces that you can order with your cheesecake. There's hazelnut, pistachio, lotus, caramel, white and milk chocolate; having a variety of sauces amplifies the flavors of the cheesecake itself, but this is totally up to you! The Japanese Cheesecake also comes in different sizes, starting with large, medium, small, mini, and bites. Kotton has included different options for all cheesecake lovers out there, as they provide specific flavorful packages. The Kotton bites come in pistachio bites and mixed bites, where you don’t have to order the extra sauce, as the bites come infused with them. If you’d like to get your hands on these special packages, you must place your order beforehand, either at the shop, or on Carriage to be delivered right at your doorstep. Their most recent addition, and best seller on their menu is the Zaku, which essentially means crunchy in Japanese. The dessert is basically 88
an innovative twist on classic choux pastry but shaped like sticks. When you take a first look at it, you might mistake it for Churros, as it’s extremely crunchy on the outside, but unbelievably creamy on the inside. Kotton has three flavors for the Zaku, the most selling one is the original, which is filled with custard cream. In addition to the original, Zaku is served in both hazelnut and pistachio cream filled versions. If you also like your sweets with a sharp, bitter drink on the side, Kotton provides several coffee offerings, but their most successful drink is the Kotton Latte. At first, the shop was shaping up to be the perfect destination in town for exquisite desserts, but it slowly developed its own drinks and beverages that go hand-in-hand with the dessert items.
Kotton is placed in such a perfect location in Kuwait City, and weekends are usually super packed at the shop. They have an outdoor seating area that’s ideal for those midday breaks, and when lunchtime comes, people tend to unwind with one of their impeccable desserts, and delicious hot and cold drinks. The shop will continue to introduce new items, or even surprise us with a secret menu. At Kotton, there will always be something new to try out!
Kotton is located at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Street. For more information, follow @kottonkw on Instagram, or place your order now on Carriage.

H&M CONSCIOUS EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION SPRING 2019
FASHION THAT CARES ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT By bazaar staff
90
It’s finally time for one of our favorite H&M annual collections, the Conscious Exclusive Spring 2019 Collection. For the ninth consecutive year, H&M has been raising the bar on how sustainable fashion can and should be done. And this year is no exception. The perfect mix of glamor and effortless style is beautiful and practical. The wonders of planet Earth were this collection's muse. The designers were inspired by the healing power and beauty of nature. They also embraced technology and innovation in the development of more sustainable materials and processes for a more environmentally conscious fashion future. Designing while thinking of and for the future, H&M are giving us a collection of stylish pieces that will be perfect for special occasions, but can also work in everyday relaxed moments. Ruffles, uneven hems, cut-outs, voluminous silhouettes, deep v-necklines and sparkling sequins add drama and allure. While the sporty details such as drawstring, elasticated waistbands and cuffs keep the pieces balanced. The bold prints were inspired by plants and trees. The beautiful jewel-toned color palette was influenced by healing crystals with colors like lavender, aqua blue, petrol blue and coral pink along with black, gold and silver. The collection is cohesive, so the different prints and fabrics mix together beautifully. Just pair the coral pink organic silk blouse featuring bell sleeves details with the sand and black straight-leg Azurite trousers in recycled polyester. For a flexible look that can take you from the office to an after-work party, match a ruffled maxi-skirt with a form-fitting knit top. Bolder can be better in a coordinating head-to-toe printed look, too. And for an evening look that is bound to sparkle in any setting, the sequin dresses are your new go-to. Throw on the silver jacket to make a statement. If you want to go for even more effect just add cowboy boots. But our favorite new fashion staple is the designed pool slide. The oversized bow make them so much fun, but they are still laidback and grounded. There is more than meets the eye though. Every previous Conscious Exclusive collection has featured a new material and this one is no different. This season, we are being introduced to three new ones; Piñatex, BLOOM Foom and Orange Fiber. Piñatex is a sustainable vegan alternative to natural leather. Unbelievably, it is made by extracting the cellulose fibers from pineapple leaves. BLOOM Foam is a high-performance plant-based foam that can be used in footwear. Incidentally, it also helps clean up the water while it is being produced. A double-win. As the name suggests, Orange Fiber is made from citrus juice by-products, repurposing them to create a silk-like cellulose fabric. While these are this season’s debuting materials, the collection relies heavily on recycled polyester, organic cotton, organic linen, organic silk, TENCEL, recycled plastic, recycled glass and recycled silver. All of this highlights H&M’s long-term commitment to fashion and sustainability.
The H&M Conscious Exclusive collection will be available at H&M 1st Avenue – The Avenues and online on the 11th of April. For more information, visit kw.hm.com. 91

SAY HELLO TO OUR FAVORITE KUWAITI DISHES
From foodie haunts, to hidden gems, discover new things to do with bazaar's monthly hit lists By bazaar staff
Behold our latest column—the bazaar hit list! From food, to places, to even our favorite things to do, our monthly hit list will entertain your every whim. We start off with a topic that is very close to our hearts: Kuwaiti food! Most of our bazaar team members were either born in Kuwait, lived in town for years, or are simply Kuwaitis by heart. Because of that, we all developed roots in this small but mighty nation, and without a doubt, these roots are also influenced by our favorite Kuwaiti dishes. By now, we all know how tough it is to really bring in the flavors of a traditional Kuwaiti dish. So, without any further delays, here are the teams’ favorites! Yasmine El Charif (Content Manager): Murabyan. What's in it? It’s basically a rice and shrimp dish, but on flavor steroids. Why I love it: It takes true technique to cleverly build up flavor in Murabyan without overcooking, let alone overpowering, the delicacy of the shrimp. I love the use 92
of dill in this dish, as well as turmeric, coriander and dried loomi (which is a very specific taste—you’ll know it as soon as you try it!). When executed well, this is such a moreish plate of food, and one bite is never enough. Places to try this dish: The best versions of Murabyan that I’ve ever had are usually homemade, but I keep hearing of solid renditions at Dar Hamad, the traditional restaurants in Souq Al Mubarakiya, and the restaurant Kashounat Al Bait. I think you should try different versions of this dish until you find the one you like! Check out the Kuwaiti cuisine food filter on Carriage, Zitaat and Talabat.
whatever floats your boat. Places to try this dish: Hot and fresh out of your local bakery, there is one attached to most co-ops. Hallah Danbouh (MMC): Chicken Machbous What's in it: Rice and chicken. Why I love it: It's the dish I grew up on, whether I was having lunch at my grandmas or at home. Every machbous is slightly different than the other one, but it still has that amazing nostalgic feeling. Places to try this dish: My grandma’s house, or any Kuwaiti cuisine restaurant. I'd personally recommend Baytoti.
Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer): Luqaimat. What's in it? Sugar, flour, yeast, saffron, cardamom. Why I love it: It's the perfect dessert and is the best of a doughnut ball and of the Indian gulab jamun. Places to try this dish: Usually you can spot people making them fresh at some of the souqs, especially in the evenings or during the weekend, but you can also find them on delivery apps. Search for Luqaimat on Carriage or Talabat and you'll find variations like Cheese Stuffed Luqaimat ones from Kubba Thahab!
Jennifer Cádiz (MMS): Markookh/Margoog. What's in it? All your left over vegetables plus dough in a thick broth Why I love it: It reminds me of my mother’s thick and gooey Hough and lentil soup with hand rolled dumplings, which was my favorite growing up. Places to try this dish: The lamb meat markookh never disappoints at Salem Al Mubarak’s Freej Swaileh in Salmiya.
Yasmin Gamal (Secret Ninja): Tannour bread. What's in it? Flour, water, yeast. Why I love it: It works with jam, cheese, labneh, zaatar,

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KEIRA KNIGHTLEY On leading a stellar cast in James Kent’s moving love story The Aftermath By bazaar staff
94
Ms Knightley is Rachael Morgan who arrives in Hamburg to be reunited with her husband, Lewis Morgan (Jason Clarke), a British army officer serving with the occupying Allied forces who controlled Germany immediately after the end of the Second World War. Morgan has requisitioned a grand house where he will stay with Rachael – common practice in the months after the conflict ended – but has allowed the German owner, Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgård) and his daughter to remain in the property. At first, Rachael is resentful at the prospect of living with the enemy as she tries to rebuild her fractured relationship with her husband, as they both struggle to come to terms with the death of their child. But she discovers that Lubert, too, is grieving the loss of his wife who died during the intense Allied bombing of Hamburg in 1943 when a large section of the city was obliterated in a firestorm that killed more than 40,000 people. Ms Knightley has twice been nominated for an Academy Award; Best Actress for Pride & Prejudice and Best Supporting Actress for The Imitation Game. The daughter of actor Will Knightley and playwright Sharman Macdonald, Ms Knightley was born in London and made her professional acting debut as a nine year old in the British TV movie, A Village Affair. At 12, she played Sabe, the decoy queen to Natalie Portman’s Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. Three years later she played tomboy soccer player Jules Paxton in Bend It Like Beckham. The film was a huge box office success and Knightley became of the hottest young stars in the world. Her other film credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Love Actually, King Arthur, The Jacket, Domino, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Atonement, The Edge of Love, The Duchess, Never Let Me Go, A Dangerous Method, Anna Karenina, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Laggies, Everest, Collateral Beauty, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Colette. Why this film, and how did you connect with this story? I think it was the idea of rebuilding and how that is possible after tremendous tragedy, both in terms of the emotional storyline with Rachael and then the physical rebuilding of cities after they have been destroyed. I felt like the 1940s and the Second World War was a period that I’ve done in quite a few films but I’d never looked at the aftermath of a conflict before and I thought that was a really interesting take on it. I was trying to think of a film set in that period and couldn’t find one. Could you? No it’s sort of unimaginable because you think about the end of the war being ‘we won, they lost’ and good
guys and bad guys and all of that and you never think about the emotional and physical landscape afterwards and how the hell you actually get back from that point of destruction where instead of seeing people as enemies suddenly seeing them as human beings again. And indeed, once you have been through such huge trauma how you begin to live again. We see the Second World War as the people who won and the people who lost but actually if you lost somebody close to you it doesn’t matter if you were on the winning side or the losing side, there are no winners. And it’s how you come back and how you rebuild your life after that – it’s something that really struck me when I was reading the script and I hadn’t seen a film that was about that. Maybe there has been one but I can’t think of it. The house where you filmed the interiors is an extraordinary place. Would you say it’s almost a character in the film? Yes, it was an extraordinary place to shoot and we were there for just over a month and it was sort of in the middle of nowhere about an hour or so out of Hamburg and it was this Gothic style, very Germanic house. And we were there so much and we really inhabited it and that house becomes a strange character in the film because it’s so atmospheric. Let’s talk about Rachael, the woman you play. How would you describe her? Rachael is somebody who has been utterly shattered by grief. Her emotional interior life is escaping through every single pore in her body and she comes to see her husband amidst the destruction of this German city amongst these people who she very much still sees as the enemy and meeting her husband who she hasn’t seen for years, properly, and they are now two different people. So Rachael is shattered – she is not a whole person at the time you meet her she is being held together by very taut skin. Rachael has suffered the loss of her son during the war. When she arrives in Hamburg to be with her husband does she still see the German people as her enemy? Yes and that’s what I found really interesting about it and of course she does see these people as her enemy. There have been six years of war where people have literally been killing each other and you have to see the enemy as the enemy. And not only that a bomb has fallen from the sky and they’ve killed the thing in the world that she loved the most, her son, and I think she blames every single German for that because of course a bomb is faceless – you don’t know who has killed your son, it’s some faceless thing that fell from the sky but you do know that it was German and so every single one of those people is still her enemy. And that’s what I found so interesting about her because that is so awful and completely understandable at exactly the same time and her journey, if you like, is seeing that enemy with a human face and seeing that the
terrible tragedy that has happened to her, happened to her people and her country, has also happened to the other people in the other country. And that is a tremendous personal journey, I should imagine, for somebody to be able to make. And that’s why I found her so impressive – you can start a film in a place of hatred for these other people and at the end she has gone through this journey of acceptance that everybody lost. And so it’s ground zero and you have to build everything up again. The sense of loss is ever present in the film. All of the many characters, including yours, are wounded by this sense of loss aren’t they? Yes, I think they have all been utterly changed and whoever they were before they experienced that they certainly aren’t any longer. I think they are all occupying a space where they don’t really know who or what they are because everything has changed. And I was really interested in the relationship between the husband and wife, Lewis and Rachael, because you are married to this person and you don’t know who you are and he doesn’t know who he is and you sure as hell don’t know who each other is. And how does that work? How can you come back together when you are faced with somebody who should be the person that you know the best in the world and you suddenly look at a face you know but you have no concept of who that person is anymore. And in a small way, I think that’s what happens to most relationships over time – you can look at a partner and you see a huge change and you go ‘oh my God, I’ve blinked and I suddenly can’t quite reach you anymore.’ And I think that’s what I was interested in because this is a very extreme version of that but really I think it’s something that most adults can connect to within that story of suddenly being with a person that you don’t quite recognise anymore. This is a more extreme version of that but with each of them I think there is that sense of finding that new identity and that sense of how you live in this world that is literally utterly destroyed and emotionally utterly destroyed. How do you get through that and come out the other side? And that’s what many people had to do after the Second World War because so many were in that place. And it’s a very interesting thing to think about because that’s a huge undertaking to pick yourself up and rebuild yourself and your relationship. You must have enjoyed all the production design detail in the house – the artwork on the walls, the piano, the Bauhaus design? And that plays with Rachael’s stereotypical expectations of where the ‘enemy’ would live doesn’t it? Very much so. And it’s always the case isn’t it, when one section of society is ostracised, you never see them as human beings you see them as the ‘enemy’ whatever that is and suddenly when you are confronted by things that they love, that they know so much about, that they are interested in, you see their humanity. And when you have been through something in the way that Rachael has

been through such loss, you don’t want to give up your sense of hatred, it’s difficult to let go of that. And particularly because that must have become a part of her, something that she could cling on to when her husband disappears and her son is killed, she can cling on to that hatred and it’s part of her identity and then suddenly that too is wiped away. The film walks a very fine line with the affair that Rachael has with Lubert doesn’t it? Because the audience will want Rachael to mend her relationship with her husband but at the same time understand why she has an affair with Lubert… Yes and that’s how I felt as well. It is a very delicate balance and that was something that we talked about a lot. But I think you have to see the complexity of that. For me personally – and this isn’t the way that everybody sees it – I sort of saw the affair with Lubert as having two parts to it. In some ways Rachael recognises Lubert’s own tragedy and his own grief and the fact that because it’s not shared there’s an understanding but the distance is enough that it doesn’t affect Lubert to be able to be there emotionally for Rachael in a way that Lewis absolutely cannot be because it’s shared grief for them. So I think there’s that. And also, an explosion has to happen between Rachael and Lewis for them to be able to get back together because something 96

has to bring it to a head and I think in a way we do ... husband and wife (laughs). In that one he dies and know that with relationships – you are aware when in this one our son dies so we should try and do one there has to be a bomb that has to go off to get where we live happily ever after. I absolutely love through something. I’m not saying that always has working with Jason. I love it. He is a phenomenal to be infidelity but I should imagine that sometimes actor and I really like him as a bloke. We have a it is.. But honestly, this romance. It’s being alive and suddenly feeling and whole job was one, if not the loveliest job I’ve been not having to re-live all of that grief but being two on and that was hugely to do with James Kent who solo entities that have nothing to do with each I think is the nicest man I’ve ever met. ON SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS
A simple guide for those of us with low emotional quotients By George Tarabay
Forget every saying or notion you know about gender roles. “Behind every great man, is a great woman.” Forget that statement all together and all of its parallels. The real saying should go: Next to every great person, is a great partner. If you love your partner, the least you can do is to support them. This does not place you in the back seat or anywhere else except the side seat, so you can enjoy a similar and full view of what’s to come, just like the driver. If you are a man, and the lady in your life is about to make a huge leap, be next to her. Support her. Love her the same amount through and through. The same can be applied to any partnership. Support does not have to be monumental. It could be as simple as the act of doing the dishes instead of your partner so they can focus on an important task. A woman does not belong in the kitchen, a man is not the bread winner, a woman does not have to sacrifice, a man should not be burdened with the responsibilities... Equal partners throughout or quit it altogether, as the equity will never be fair. Actions speak louder than words. This statement is one that I stick by. I’d rather spend three hours designing a flower arrangement for my wife than saying “I love you” once. Not because I am incapable of expressing emotions, but because words carry no weight, nor do they last. What lasts is emotion, a product of effort your partner puts into drawing a smile on your face. I love showering my wife with 98
flowers and her simple act of keeping the flowers way past their life cycle warms my heart, because I can see a residual effect of my gesture to her translated in her clinginess to the moment I made her smile. There is no proclaimed royalty in love, only bestowed royalty. Acting like a king or queen in your love life will only create a sense of entitlement. Get your hands dirty, both of you, in everything related to your lives. Even the things you have no clue about. Get in there, help your partner. The only sense of royalty you should get is when your partner decides to pamper you. You are both humans with emotional needs, but you are not entitled to these needs. Earn them from your partner, and if your partner is as great as mine, you won’t have to ask for them ever. Secrecy. A simple word that, to me, encompasses so many values. Hard work: By keeping your relationship to you two and you two alone with all its downs, even from your closest ones (not in the case of emotional or physical abuse though, because this is your cue to exit NOW) you are shielding yourself from all influence that might steer you into staying with or leaving your partner. This puts you both in charge solemnly to work hard on making it work, or not, which also translates into dedication. Respect: Secrecy means you protect the image of your loved ones in terms of their shortcomings. The world has no business in knowing the weaknesses
and the shortcomings of your loved one. Not because it’s shameful to be weak or erroneous, but because that conversation has no value to anything. Portray them well in all your speeches. Team spirit: Secrecy also translates into a full autonomous dependency that only pushes both of you forward in each aspect of your lives. Dependent on each other in the areas where the other is stronger and that carries over to your sense of autonomy. And last but not least. Love them more than a cloned version of you would love “you”. Love them selflessly that it becomes unrealistic. Love them with the same amount you love yourself, not more, because that would put you in a back seat of the ride and don’t love them less you would love yourself because that would put them in the back seat of the ride. The ride includes the both of you. Your partner is your co-pilot. You will ask them many times to drive on your behalf, and if they stayed in the back seat for the longest time…how on earth do you think you will end up where you set up to go in the first place, if they had no view of the road ahead? FROM RICHES TO RAGS
Oh dear game industry-what happened? By Tim Burns
For as many years as I’ve been a joypad warrior, myself and other game fans have been excited for the latest news, releases and updates in the game industry. There was a time when a rare but special month littered with triple A releases would present problems for us gamers, namely ‘How can we afford so many titles at one time’ and having to strategically research and select which new release would win our money and time. Now, there’s a new kind of problem. February saw the release of four top tier games in the space of one week; Farcry New Dawn, Crackdown 3, Anthem and Metro Exodus. Sadly, three of these were not well received, innovative or inspiring. In some cases, they just failed on all levels. Before we get into this, I personally enjoyed Crackdown 3, an Xbox One exclusive. While most reviewers were not impressed with it, I had a great time playing. This could be because I’d never played the first two in the series so this was something fresh and new, and not just a repeat of the first two games. Still, I didn’t agree with most criticisms of the game 100
that came with the reviews. I definitely recommend it even if you have played the others. You can also try it for free with game pass, so you have literally nothing to lose! A huge part of the problem is greed and laziness, on the part of the publishers. The main thing they have in mind is how to make more money after the last game has sold, so they rush and hurry to push out a new title as quickly as possible. Most popular franchises release a follow up title every year now, so there just isn’t time to be creative and innovative with such a short time to develop a new game. As well as this, publishers want to not only make money on the price of the game, including special editions, but they want players to keep paying, which usually involves implementing loot boxes or DLC. Sometimes you can simply avoid these measures, if you don’t want to pay after buying the game. But it’s becoming more common that games are being made in a certain way, that they become unenjoyable and grindy if you don’t spend extra. For example, in a game where leveling up allows you to progress through the story; certain titles now make it that leveling up makes you repeat the same tasks, or the same gameplay, much more than is reasonable before you can level up. You can do this, OR you can pay extra and buy in game currency or points that let you bypass the grind so you can continue. This isn’t acceptable.
My personal principle in life is to never pay for bad service. If I go into a shop and something negative happens, I will not hand money over, recommend the shop, or even visit ever again. I’m sure that solo, my action won’t have any effect on the business, and nothing will change but I stand by it, and if more people did the same, things would change quickly because then there would be an effect. I treat games the same. The more complex and technologically challenging games become, the more I see these toxic practices creeping in. This year alone, I’ve missed a good 90% of the big blockbuster games due to a combination of such practices; either ‘pay to play’ tactics that I’m not willing to support, or simply lazy design. On the other hand, Nintendo are going from strength to strength. While we are seeing many follow up games in the Mario, Zelda and Pokemon series, each offers something new and rewarding without trying to con more money from the player. Each title takes time to release with a nice space in-between releases; you know as soon as you pick up a Switch game where love, care and attention has gone into it. Until things change, I’ll continue to follow my principles and would urge anybody else that’s unhappy with the state of gaming to do the same. As the old saying goes, ‘Nothing ever changes by staying the same’, after all! Photo by JESHOOTS.COM on Unsplash.

DISCOVER TILLTALANDE
IKEA not only creates jobs, they also help create better lives
By bazaar staff
IKEA’s aesthetic is unmistakable. It’s clean, and decidedly very Swedish. We were pleasantly surprised, however, when we walked into IKEA’s showroom and saw some seemingly desert and Arab-inspired cushions and rugs. The bright colors, intricate handstitched details and motifs were clearly Middle Eastern, and very intriguing. There is a story behind the new TILLTALANDE collection, which incidentally translates to appealing. And it truly is. It started in one of Jordan’s refugee camps, when people realized that one of the biggest obstacles in a refugee’s life is their inability to work, and to become fully re-integrated, in their host societies. IKEA was determined to help, and in November of 2016 decided to begin purchasing from Jordan. IKEA’s Social Entrepreneur Initiative is a program that bridges gaps between people and cultures, shares ideas and creates a better everyday life for more of the many. The program partnered up with the Jordan River Foundation to help recruit and train refugee and local Jordanian women to embroider and weave on the looms. 102
IKEA also managed the business and design processes to get the project up and running. One hundred women artisans worked to produce the first limited collection of handcrafted textiles. By 2018, the number of crafts people doubled to 200 and is expected to reach 400 by the end of 2020. "We´ve really had a flying start. This is just the beginning of a long-term partnership and the co-creation of great design while creating jobs for Jordanian locals and refugees. To see the collection come alive together with Jordan River Foundation and all the artisans feels wonderful and we hope our customers will enjoy it", says AnnSofie Gunnarsson, Partner Development Leader at IKEA of Sweden. We were all touched by the mini-documentary playing in the display at the store. If you’re at IKEA, do make it a point to stop by and listen. You’ll find the installation right at the entrance as you walk into the showroom. We were totally moved by how the women involved in the project described how this opportunity has afforded them dignity, selfrespect, income and a renewed purpose in life. All of which are qualities that not only women, but people in other parts of the world in general, take for granted on a daily basis.
IKEA Jordan was the first store to launch the collection. IKEA Kuwait released the TILLTALANDE collection in March of 2019. And during the remainder of this year, the collection will be available in selected European and international markets, including cosmopolitan locations like New York. This arrives as a crucial, educational opportunity for people from all over the world to learn more about the daily struggles of life in a refugee camp, but more importantly, discover what the power of potential could produce. More products are being added to the collection over the coming months, further proving how the textile pieces are unique and are making a difference. Intricate and unique embroidery is mixed with bold prints in the forms of cushions and various accessories. Motifs like the camel have hand embroidered saddles, the desert cactus flower features handmade tassels to represent the flower in bloom, as well as palm tree feature prominently in the designs. The color scheme is inspired by the land itself, with earthy tones and bursts of contrasting bright shades, striking a perfect balance between modern IKEA and traditional Jordan. This has kept the essence of a handmade item while keeping production efficient enough
for affordable items. The designs are Bedouin inspired, with simple elements that come from the stories that have been handed down across generations. In truth, it is a project that pays homage to a rich cultural heritage in the past and a tenacity that will carry its people to the future. “Many of the gardens in Amman have massive cactus, you can’t miss them. Faridon Abida, designer at Jordan River Foundation, told me how they sometimes burst into yellow or pink blossom, We both loved the idea of using them in the collection, and the women artisans instantly connected with the idea”, says Paulin Machado, designer at IKEA of Sweden. Perhaps the best testament to the importance and effectiveness of the program is what the women who are working with IKEA and the Jordan River Foundation say in their own words. Abeeh Almnajed, a Syrian refugee said, “I spend all my free time helping my children with their homework. Thanks to this job I hope to be able to afford a better school.” On the other hand Tahani Al Khatib, an artisan originally from Palestine, expresses why it is so important ”Handicraft is not only a career, or a way to sustain one’s livelihood, it’s a lifeline.” Finally, Amneh Al Gawanmeh, a weaver at Bani Hamida weaving center, is proud of her heritage ”Weaving Bedouin rugs is a delicate art. I learned and inherited the craft from my mother. Every rug we weave is produced with passion and hard labor. It’s an ode to our heritage”. For IKEA, the partnership has provided a great deal of inspiration, knowledge and partnership with skilled artisans, while still creating handmade products for customers. It is a double win for all parties involved and shows that companies can help communities in ways that are economically sustainable and viable.

CLEAN EATING IN KUWAIT
Making better food choices for the environment By bazaar staff
We are not going to lie about it, we are all guilty of polluting. We keep saying we will say no to plastic, but even when we use our reusable grocery bags and switch out plastic straws for stainless steel ones, the plastic sneaks past us. We’ve realized that a lot of the single use plastic waste that we create is caused by our constant cravings and food delivery. Fortunately, many restaurants in Kuwait have started taking a greener approach to their packaging. Many establishments and delivery services give you the option of not getting plastic cutlery, and although they sometimes ignore it, it is still a step in the correct direction. By buying from places that use dishes and boxes that are or can be recycled or reused is a great way to reduce our plastic consumption. Here are some of our favorite eateries that are helping us do better for the planet, although maybe not so much for our waistlines. But we digress. Our waistlines, shrinking or expanding, can be thoroughly explored in another article, but because we care, we won’t do that to you. 104

Q & The Creamery Where two concepts emerge into one! The Urban Creamery has joined hands with Q Restaurants, and gave us Q & The Creamery. The beautifully decorated place is located in Vibes Complex, with vibrant colors, and very specific opening and closing hours. As the concept is a collaborative effort between two entities, it merges both menus, with a twist! For example, Q has introduced a new item that you can only try at Q & The Creamery, which is the Zaatar and Feta Shakshouka. The menu is also split, depending on whether you’re going for lunch, dinner or just dessert. The Creamery menu (the dessert) combines both sweets from each restaurants, so you’ll have to either go for Q’s delicious Mom’s Cake, or Urban’s Kanafa cone! THE ULTIMATE
Maserati SHOWCASE Maserati at the 89th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show By bazaar staff
Considered as one of the most important exhibitions of the year in Europe, and around the world, Maserati wowed audiences at the Geneva International Motor Show. Firstly launching the Levante Trofeo Launch Edition with only 100 units, a true must-see at the show, along with other models from the MY19 range. Another premiere of the Geneva Show were the new interiors in PELLETESSUTA, an exclusive new material made by Ermenegildo Zegna exclusively for Maserati. Arriving as an ode to the brand’s sporty DNA, Maserati exhibited a GranTurismo MC (acronym for Maserati Corse), for the first time with an exterior in the desirable Grigio Lava Matte color combined with interiors in carbon fiber. Many new developments were revealed at the opening of the show, exemplifying Maserati’s ability to construct customized automobiles is the exciting one-off model, created according to the requests of a particular customer.
108
LEVANTE TROFEO LAUNCH EDITION - A LIMITED EDITION Kicking off the Levante Trofeo Launch with a limited run of 100 units, the stunning model will be available not only in the Blu Emozione Matte color presented at the Geneva International Motor Show but also in the unique paints Giallo Modenese and Rosso Magma. The interior features sports seats with a premium full-grain "Pieno Fiore” natural leather, with contrasting stitching and a "Trofeo" logo embroidered on the headrest, available in blue, red or yellow. The exclusive carbon fiber inserts on the bumpers, side skirts and specially designed bonnet stand out. The 22" Orione rims can be matte or glossy black finish, while the brake calipers are available in silver, blue, yellow or red. The Levante Trofeo is equipped with one of the most powerful engines ever fitted in a Maserati road car. This is the 3.8 liter Twin Turbo V8, calibrated to mate perfectly with the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, providing it with a new crankcase design, specific crankshaft assembly, new oil pump and auxiliary belt and a different wiring layout. Like all Maserati petrol engines, this V8 is assembled by Ferrari in Maranello. In terms of 0-100km/h acceleration, it stops the chronometer at 4.1”, while the maximum speed is close to the 300 km/h threshold. The Levante Trofeo is fitted with the eightspeed ZF automatic gearbox used on all the Levante versions, acclaimed for its versatility and sporty character. The “Corsa" driving mode with Launch Control functionality (in addition to the existing Normal, I.C.E., Sport and Off Road modes) has been adopted to enhance the sporty character of the ultimate Maserati SUV. “Corsa” driving mode further improves engine response and opens exhaust valves in acceleration, as well as providing faster gear shifting, lower air suspension height levels, sportier Skyhook damping and optimized Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive settings. It also interacts with the Traction Control and ESP systems to maximize driving pleasure. The Levante features the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system for impressive driving dynamics, better performance, and a genuine Maserati driving experience, by helping to prevent vehicle instability, instead of correcting “driver mistakes” as a traditional Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system does. The ideal 50:50 weight balance and the low center of gravity - common to all Levante models, in combination with the finely tuned doublewishbone front / Multi Link rear suspension, as well as the wider 22-inch rear tires on forged aluminum alloy wheels, provide the new Trofeo with perfectly balanced handling and lateral stability. The unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in this model like the lower splitter, the side blades in the front

air intakes, the side skirt inserts and the rear extractor, made of ultralight high-gloss carbon fiber. At the front, the Levante Trofeo has Full Matrix LED adaptive headlights, a front grille with double vertical bars in Black Piano finish, lower honeycomb mesh fascia, body color door handles and high-performance brake calipers available in red, blue, black, silver or yellow. And to cap it off, the “Saetta” Trofeo logo adorns the iconic C-pillar of the coupé styled Levante. Inside the Levante Trofeo cabin is a wealth of elegant features which create an environment of pure luxury. “Pieno Fiore” is like no other leather used in the automotive industry for its natural, soft feel and for the unique character it develops throughout the years. This amazing Levante's quintessentially sporty personality is highlighted by new details in "3D Touch" matt carbon fiber, the specific instrument cluster graphics, floor mats with metal Trofeo badges, and a Maserati clock with a unique dial. The on-board set up is completed by a 1,280-watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound audio system for a concert hall sound experience. The Levante Trofeo is the first ever Maserati equipped with 22-inch forged aluminum wheels, so Maserati cooperated with Continental to provide the new SportContact 6 tire as standard equipment. The new ultra-sport tire has substantially contributed to achieving the excellent and balanced handling and outstanding cornering performance of the most powerful Maserati in production today. PERSONALIZATION Maserati fans absolutely love the brand’s design perspective when it comes to personalization on all Maserati models. At the 89th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show, Maserati’s creativity in personalization came to life. The Maserati area at the show highlighted the brand’s distinct Italian flair for design, as well as the process of craftsmanship and customization. All of these design considerations have prompted Maserati to host on their stand together with Ermenegildo Zegna, a longstanding partner and a leader in the field of men’s luxury clothing, two other leading artisanal firms in their field: Giorgetti, the internationally renowned Italian woodworking company, known for its furniture and unique design pieces, and De Castelli, a leading metalworking firm, specializing in the production of unique home design accessories, custom surfaces and projects. At Maserati tradition becomes innovation, combining fine craftsmanship, advanced technology and sophisticated design for the sort of exclusive, unique mix only Maserati knows how to apply to its cars. The stand provided an instructive tour through three different dedicated thematic areas. Each area will feature a display of tools, materials 110
and components that are, specially crafted by Zegna, De Castelli and Giorgetti, bear witness to the unending quest for excellence, style and originality, typical of products designed and made in Italy, and therefore typical of Maserati. Speaking of innovation and design, when it comes to customizing the stand, for the first time ever, Maserati stole the show with the Customization Area of a D-Table, the only interactive table which combines the latestgeneration software and elegant, sophisticated design. ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA Zegna is a longstanding partner of Maserati and for the Geneva show presented the world premiere of its new car interiors in PELLETESSUTA, a special woven nappa leather, the product of pioneering research by Ermenegildo Zegna, seeks to create a luxurious, innovative, lightweight and soft fabric that is versatile and well suited for the creation of products, ranging from home design complements to multimedia accessories. The bond between Zegna and Maserati grows stronger with each passing year, in no small part due to the historical similarities of the two brands. The Ermenegildo Zegna Group is one of the most distinguished businesses in all of Italy. Founded back in 1910 in Trivero, in the Biellese Alps, by a young entrepreneur named Ermenegildo, whose vision was to ethically produce the most sumptuous fabrics in the world by means of innovation and the utilization of the best luxury fibers. These fibers are sourced directly from their countries of origin, and the company is currently guided by the fourth generation of the Zegna family. The Group, which since the late 80’s has been implementing a strategy of vertical integration, has created a global luxury brand which currently offers fabrics, clothing and accessories. Today there are 504 single-label stores in over 100 countries, of which 272 are company-owned. GIORGETTI The Giorgetti cabinet-making tradition started in Brianza in 1898, and more than 120 years later, is still continuing to evolve and innovate. The company looks to the future, how to convey and stay on top of all the changes in a dynamically transforming world. Giorgetti’s approach to interior design involves interpreting behaviors and tastes in various different markets, creating pieces that are free of all formal conventions, capable of coexisting harmoniously in any context, dissolving cultural and temporal distances. The products made by Giorgetti epitomize the best in the proud slogan, “Made and Manufactured in Italy”. Starting from design, creativity and style, and all the way to the
actual manufacture of a finished product, the entire manufacturing process is completely carried out in Italy by highly qualified personnel, boasting consummate skill in the furniture sector. The craft-based approach associated with the phrase, "Made in Italy", transcends the notion of standardized, mass-produced products, guaranteeing high levels of product customization. The indispensable work of master craftsmen is capable of imbuing Giorgetti projects with that magical allure of unique, handmade pieces. DE CASTELLI True to its commitment to restore the role of metal in project experimentation, De Castelli is grafting a craft-based concept and approach to metalwork in otherwise typically industrial processes, a bold synthesis that leads to unprecedented results. This method of design brings back an artisanal approach, that showcases the beauty of metal work and its vast potential as opposite to mass-produced models that are without any design character. The handcrafted process is reflective of a culture that pays tribute to De Castelli’s focus on aesthetics that merge seamlessly with function to result in bespoke design—similar to what we see in De Castelli’s approach to living spaces. This overturns the maxim that confines the coldness of metal to the outer margins of interior design projects, bringing steel, brass and copper, in their multiple variations and finishes, to the center of a completely renovated scenario where they can
finally glow in self-generated radiance. Delabré is the name of an artisanal finish conceived of and realized by De Castelli. It consists in the manual oxidation of materials like steel, copper and brass, capable of imbuing them with unique, unrepeatable chromatic effects. THE OTHER MODELS IN THE MASERATI RANGE: GRANTUSIMO MC, QUATTROPORTE AND GHIBLI Visitors to the Geneva International Motor Show also enjoyed a dynamic display of the GranTurismo MC (acronym for Maserati Corse) which perfectly represents the sporty DNA of the Modena company. The GranTurismo MC boasts an exclusive new configuration, for the first time ever with the Grigio Lava Matte as the exterior color and “Nerissimo Carbon Pack” trim with the Black Chrome contrasting finishes for the various details: the upper portion of the grille with black vertical slats and the Trident in the middle, the profiles of the boot, the lettering on the tailgate, the logo on the pillars and the side air intakes. Also featuring an exclusive black finish are the door handles, the exhaust outlets and the window frames. Carbon fibre customization packs will be available for the interiors. The stand also featured various different Maserati models, including a Levante S Q4 GranSport in an exclusive trim with the exterior in a Bronze color, which boasts interiors in Zegna PELLETESSUTA. The car sports 21” polished Helios rims. For the first time in the history of this longstanding partnership with Zegna, the customization has been extended to also

include the GranSport trims of the Maserati range. An especially sophisticated combination for this Levante, the first SUV in the more than one-hundred year history of Maserati. Also on display was the Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 GranLusso with its Blu Sofisticato colored body combined with interiors in PELLETESSUTA Zegna, an extremely elegant configuration to once again underscore the exclusive, luxurious character of this Italian manufacturer flagship, whose origins date back to Series I designed in 1963 to be the fastest sedan in the world. The 21” Atlante alloy rims with blue brake calipers and the sport seats underscore the dual nature of this model. Two Maserati Ghibli S Q4 (GranSport and GranLusso trims), 430 hp, were also viewed on the stand. The GranSport trim is equipped with metallic Grigio Maratea paint on the outside and Nerissimo pack with a red interior in full-grain “Pieno Fiore” leather and black stitching, plus roof lining in black Alcantara. The rims are 21” in Glossy Black Titanium, which imbue the Maserati sedan, boasting Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, with a unique, unmistakable character. The elegance of the GranLusso trim is highlighted by the tri-coat exterior Bianco Alpi paint and by the 20” Teseo rims; on the inside the full-grain “Pieno Fiore” black leather has been combined with Oak trim and roof lining in grey Alcantara. The entire MY19 range, composed of Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante models, has benefited from a luxurious restyling which combined targeted interventions in terms of both style and new contents. Both the sedans and the SUV with MY19 specifications are equipped with a redesigned shorter-travel gearshift lever featuring a more intuitive shift pattern and improved operation. The Maserati Levante Trofeo for the European market is capable of delivering 580 hp at 6,250 rpm, achieving extremely high peak rotation, maintaining the same torque of 730 Nm, usable in a wide range between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm. The Levante Trofeo therefore displays the characteristic of immediately providing high levels of torque even at low revs, a feature that is appreciated by the customers of this type of SUV. Thanks to new turbochargers with increased flow, a redesigned cylinder head with specific camshafts and valves, new pistons and new connecting rods, the Levante Trofeo is able to achieve impressive power peaks, in combination with specific engine calibration mapping. The new Levante Trofeo features Full Matrix LED adaptive headlights as standard. Compared to Bi-Xenon headlamps, LED technology offers 20% better visibility, 32% cooler light and headlights that last twice as long. The full LED headlights utilize a digital camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror that supports the Glare-free High Beam detection system, allowing the driver to keep the high

beam on without dazzling oncoming drivers. The system is able to create a “zone of shade” around other vehicles switching dynamically on and off the LED matrixes. The full Matrix LED headlights can create up to four light tunnels simultaneously with each tunnel as large as the obstacle. The Brembo braking system deals superbly with the high performance of the Levante Trofeo. The front brakes have adopted 6-piston aluminum monobloc calipers working on 380 mm x 34 mm drilled discs, while 4-piston aluminum monobloc calipers with 330 mm x 28 mm ventilated drilled discs are fitted at the rear. The ABS has undergone a specific setup for the Trofeo version. Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte share the same MTC+ infotainment system, which is based on a high resolution 8.4” multi-touch screen and
a double rotary knob on the center console. For MY19 there is a choice of nine body colors for the Quattroporte and 10 for each of the Ghibli and Levante models. A new tri-coat color is now available, born to enhance the design of each: the elegant Blu Nobile. In the wide collection of alloy wheels designed specifically for every single Maserati model, there are five brand new designs in the MY19 catalogue in 20 and 21-inch sizes, two for each of the Levante and Quattroporte models and one for the Ghibli.

7 WAYS TO TEST IF YOUR IDEA IS BAD
Use these methods to test your ideas to determine if they are good or bad By Stephanie Vozza
Ideas are cheap; it’s the execution that matters, says Lars Sudmann, leadership advisor and former CFO of Procter & Gamble Belgium. “You need to have the willingness and discipline to test your idea in real life,” he says. “Will it work? What are the reactions of others? What is my own experience? Only then can you assess if it is a great idea. Without testing, for me an idea is by default a bad idea as it only lives as a thought construct.” You can test your ideas in a variety of ways to determine if it’s bad or good. 1. RUN IT BY A CONFIDANT The quickest way to test an idea is to share it, but be careful with whom you consult. When it comes to giving feedback, we all have people who will tell us what they think we want to hear, and we likely know people who will throw a wet blanket on any proposal, says David Hagenbuch, professor of marketing at Messiah College. It’s important to find someone who will be honest. “We all need someone who will speak [truthfully] to us from an informed and objective perspective,” he says. “Such ‘idea editors’ are invaluable at proofreading our plans, giving us honest feedback, and constructive criticism aimed at helping our ideas succeed.” 2. CONSULT “WEAK TIES” IN YOUR NETWORK Weak ties often will tell you the truth about your ideas because they don’t have as much to lose as friends, says Adele Cehrs, CEO of the crisis communications firm When and How. “Pose questions about your ideas and ask acquaintances to refute them,” she says. “If you truly have a good idea, you can defend your thinking and have some honest critique.” 3. ASK EXISTING CUSTOMERS A sure way to know that your idea is bad is when you have zero feedback after presenting it, says Chuck Sacco, assistant dean of Strategic Initiatives at the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship at Drexel University and director of the Laurence A. Baiada Institute for Entrepreneurship. “What may seem like a great idea to the entrepreneur may end up being a terrible idea to the target customer,” he says. “‘Gee, that’s really nice’ isn’t good enough. If they are not really excited, the idea is likely a nonstarter.” 4. USE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY Think about whether other people would want 114
to promote your idea for you, says Cehrs.“If you can’t think of three good reasons why someone would want to spread the word about your product or service, you may have a bad idea,” she says. If people say they would promote your idea, ask them open-ended questions to gain a better understanding about why they would want to promote it, Cehrs adds. “This will help your promotional strategy and give you a sense of the viability of the idea,” she says. 5. ASK A FRIEND TO EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA BACK TO YOU If your idea is too complex, it is likely a bad one, says Cehrs.“One test is to tell your idea to someone, and then ask them to call a friend to explain it,” she says. “If they can’t translate your idea with clarity, you need to go back to the drawing board.” 6. MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT REPEATING AN OLD IDEA If you’ve tested the idea before and it didn’t work and nothing has changed since then, it’s probably still a bad idea, says Sudmann.
“Especially if the context hasn’t changed, it’s more likely that you are part of a repeating pattern and that your idea is bad,” he says. “There is a fine line between persistency and trying and just not realizing that your idea is a bad one. If you have tried out something for some three or more times and it didn’t work, it might be time to stop.” 7. LET THE MARKET TELL YOU The market is the only true arbiter of value, whether an idea is bad or not bad, says Vince DiFelice, faculty member for the University of Delaware’s Horn Entrepreneurship program. “Find a customer with money in that market who will serve as your ally,” he says. “Learn how to sell value in that market–value that’s unique. Don’t hire someone else to sell for you yet. This allows you the opportunity to fail and persist while the competition is not looking. You may succeed. You may not. Regardless, you will learn a lot and add to your means, which can only help you in the future.” Photo by Vale Zmeykov on Unsplash.

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE TERRIBLE TWOS Children are a gift… repeat for as long as necessary to accept this! By Ayman Nassar
To my dear parents, I apologize profusely for all that I put you through in the years of my upbringing. It is only at the age of 33 that I truly see the agony you must have gone through. The aforementioned disclaimer is for all of us to memorize and repeat to our parents, verbally and in our prayers, because trust me, rearing children is no walk in the park. It starts off easily enough. The noise, the sleep-deprivation, the diapers can all be likened to stresses at the work-place (for the last one, just think of how you imagine your manager when you’re extremely irritated by them). It is what comes next that is a complete curve-ball thrown at us by life as a giant cosmic joke, payback for what we did to our own parents (and the reason why we should all read the first two lines again and again) that we rarely have a recollection of, and they in turn rarely speak about. The first three months are like any new relationship, you are still learning, feeding, changing with little to no reciprocity, asides from a slight movement of the lip you vehemently convince yourself is a smile of appreciation to ward off the stress of being dominated by a being no taller than your knees. The next six months are a blessing, your baby is finally humanoid and able to communicate in very basic ways (reduced are the stresses of overfeeding, the constant need to burp and the need to use the ever useful throw-up towel). It is around this age of 9 months that your previously sedentary baby, now turned into crawling baby, transitions into standing baby. You might be extremely happy at this point, but a word of caution: standing is the harbinger of the impending doom – the walking. At first, it is cute. Baby’s first steps are always cute. It is ok because they are still figuring out how to use their little legs, and they are 100% sure you are distracted trying to find them a cute pair of tiny shoes to showcase on their adorable little feet. Little do you realize, this is a dastardly ploy to keep you occupied. As you are focused on the fact that your cute baby can now walk, you completely ignore the fact that they are upright. With everything that goes with that new level of ascension. You may not realize this, but babies get taller. The taller they get, the more we parents feel like we are living in a flooding house – raise everything higher! It’s easy at first, but then you realize the little cretins can reach up and across, grabbing anything and everything in their 118
path, the world’s worst delivery system as they take everything they can get their tiny hands on and deposit it in the unlikeliest of places – at this point things start to disappear, the TV remote, your earrings, your mobile phone (thank goodness for findmyphone programs, lest my phone had been thrown away with the trash). They get taller still, and pretty soon they put their training to good use. Remember how fond you were of taking those cute pictures of your child holding on to your finger with their tiny fists? Little did we realize, they were training their grip. Now, they are able to wrap said paws around door handles and force them open. Our worst fear is now realized. It is no longer a matter of moving everything higher, now we must have a dual locking system akin to the nuclear launch codes of the world’s arsenal. They have now succeeded in opening the apartment door and enjoy the brief taste of freedom in the outside corridor, still too short to
reach the elevator buttons. But it will happen, and when it does, woe be upon you. Remember how we used to jiggle our keys above our little angels to get them to keep quiet? They weren’t fascinated by the inanimate object, they were studying the mechanism of how these little devices can open such big doors. And they are always watching. Learning. From this parents humble opinion, the terrible two’s are not a warning of coming of age, but rather, a foreboding for when they learn to stand on their own two feet. Warn the others.

THE FERRARI F8 TRIBUTO A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE
The F8 Tributo is the new mid-rearengine sports car that represents the highest expression of the Prancing Horse’s classic two-seater Berlinetta. It’s a car with unique characteristics and, as its name implies, pays homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. The F8 Tributo sets the market benchmark for performance, driving pleasure and ease of handling. It makes the exhilarating performance of the best 8-cylinder in the world accessible to all drivers, with unprecedented handling and superior ride comfort. With a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 ever to be mounted in a non-special series Ferrari, achieving new heights not just for turbos, but for engines across the board. The turbo-charged V8 has already been used in other models in the range with various power output levels, winning “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2018, it was also awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades. The F8 Tributo delivers its 720 cv without the slightest hint of turbo lag and produces an evocative soundtrack. Instantaneous power is matched by exceptional handling, thanks to the integration of 122

state-of-the-art aerodynamics solutions derived from Ferrari’s track experience. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasize Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. In fact, the F8 Tributo is the most aerodynamically efficient series-production midrear-engine berlinetta ever designed. The F8 Tributo replaces the 488 GTB and, in the range, is the model with the highest performance matched by the greatest driver involvement. There are significant improvements across the board aimed at providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort. The F8 Tributo punches out 50 cv more than the 488 GTB, is 40 kg lighter and also benefits from a 10% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency along with the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control, now in 6.1 guise. ENGINE In the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is midrear-mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, and thus delivers unparalleled thrilling sporty driving, to perfection for over four decades. In fact, Maranello made its debut in the 8-cylinder 2-seater berlinetta segment in 1975 with the 308 GTB, a revolutionary car that became a source of inspiration for subsequent models. The same mid-rear V8 two-seater architecture was also adopted for Ferrari’s first supercars, not least the 1984 GTO and 1987 F40, which have achieved iconic status amongst enthusiasts. The V8’s technical specifications are truly exceptional, placing it at the very top of its segment. The F8 Tributo unleashes 720 cv at 8,000 rpm and also has an impressive specific power output of 185 cv/l. Its maximum torque is now higher too at all engine speeds, peaking at 770 Nm (+10 Nm compared to the 488 GTB) at 3,250 rpm. VEHICLE DYNAMICS Overall performance levels are significantly higher than those of the 488 GTB, thanks to the increase in power, weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. That performance is also now accessible to a larger number of drivers thanks to vehicle dynamics systems that make driving on the limit an easier and more confidence-inspiring experience. These include a steering wheel with a rim that is smaller in diameter with a thinner rim, and the introduction of the new Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer Plus into the integrated SSC concept, now in 6.1 guise. To achieve their goal of making the car’s impressive performance easy to access and use, Ferrari’s engineers worked on integrating engine and aerodynamics performance with the latest iteration of the vehicle dynamics control systems. The Side
Slip Control system, which improves drivers’ control on the limit for even more engaging involvement, has been further evolved. The transition from version 6.0 to 6.1 reflects the fact that the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer system now also activates in the manettino RACE (FDE+) position. In the RACE setting, the car is 6% faster coming out of bends than the 488 GTB with the same amount of steering wheel activity. It is also available in the CTOff position where, for the same degree of oversteer, steering wheel activity is reduced by 30% compared to the 488 GTB. The result is that, with the same level of driving skill, drivers will see an improvement in their ability to hold the car on the limit, making them more confident in lengthy oversteer maneuvers. The F8 Tributo cuts the lap time at Fiorano from 1’23.0” to 1’22.5”. DESIGN: EXTERIOR Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo essentially delivers a new exterior design language. From the very earliest stages of the design process, the work focused on two goals simultaneously: designing a stylistic tribute to the Ferrari V8 engine, inspired by the most iconic mid-rear-engine V8 sports cars in Ferrari history, and giving the car a strong personality of its own through an even sportier design clearly inspired by the car’s advanced aerodynamics. The front of the car is characterized by the S-Duct around which the entire front end has been redesigned to highlight the extensive aerodynamic modifications made to this area of the car. This is best illustrated by the new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights. The new rear screen celebrates Ferrari’s legendary V8 engine. Made from ultralight Lexan, it has been restyled to incorporate three louvres at it center and showcase the engine compartment, bringing a
modern twist to the most distinctive design element from Ferrari’s most famous V8-engined car, the F40. The louvres also help extract hot air from the engine compartment, in line with Ferrari’s focus on functional design. DESIGN: INTERIOR The cockpit retains the classic, driver-oriented look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engine berlinettas. Every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel has been completely redesigned specifically for the car. The F8 Tributo also boasts a new generation steering wheel and steering wheel-mounted controls as well as new styling on the standard seats. New round air vents are set in beautifully sculpted aluminum surrounds (also available in optional carbon-fiber) which cleverly underscore the dash structure. To emphasize the lightness of the whole assembly, the dash now incorporates an aluminum sail panel supporting the central satellite and continuing into the dash itself. Also to create a sense of visual lightness, a sliver of carbon fiber divides the upper and lower parts, streamlining the whole look. This section also incorporates the optional 7” touchscreen passenger-side display which provides an extra sporting touch. The dash is completed by the classic instrument cluster with its central revcounter and the new-generation steering wheel and commands.

GIRL, STOP APOLOGIZING
THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN
by Rachel Hollis, Nonfiction
by Lisa See, Historical Fiction
Rachel Hollis has seen it too often: women not living into their full potential. They feel a tugging on their hearts for something more, but they’re afraid of embarrassment, of falling short of perfection, of not being enough. In Girl, Stop Apologizing, #1 New York Times bestselling author and founder of a multimillion-dollar media company, Rachel Hollis sounds a wake-up call. She knows that many women have been taught to define themselves in light of other people— whether as wife, mother, daughter, or employee— instead of learning how to own who they are and what they want. With a challenge to women everywhere to stop talking themselves out of their dreams, Hollis identifies the excuses to let go of, the behaviors to adopt, and the skills to acquire on the path to growth, confidence, and believing in yourself.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility, a novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel. In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor toward understanding what it means to be a man of purpose.

Collingwood "Cherry" Ingram first fell in love with the sakura, or cherry tree, when he visited Japan on his honeymoon in 1907. So taken with the plant, he brought back hundreds of cuttings with him to England, where he created a garden of cherry varieties. In 1926, he learned that the Great White Cherry had become extinct in Japan. Six years later, he buried a living cutting from his own collection in a potato and repatriated it via the Trans-Siberian Express. In the years that followed, Ingram sent more than 100 varieties of cherry tree to new homes around the globe, from Auckland to Washington. This is the story of one remarkable man, following the flower from its adoption as a national symbol in 1794, through its use as an emblem of imperialism in the 1930s, to the present-day worldwide obsession with forecasting the exact moment of the trees' flowering.

THE FESTIVE COLLECTION H&M HOME brings the garden into your home
By bazaar staff
Iconic Sunflowers are the belle of the ball in the special occasion collection of the year. Bright yellow, flashes of gold and green in solids and prints come together to create a bright and modern collection. Instantly making any room feel sunny and warm. Spring is the most beautiful season of the year, it is when the flowers bloom, the weather is perfect, and we are all ready for a change of scenery after a grayish winter. Combining sunny yellow of sunflowers with warm greens, natural materials and floral patterns brings the outdoors in and creates a happy spring vibe in any home. The kitchen is the new living room for many families. And it has become a room central to celebrations, cozy breakfasts and late-night snack attacks. Adding items like sunflower mugs, leafshaped plates and linen seat cushions in neutral tones transforms it into a more welcoming and inviting space. The different textures and rustic materials make this collection truly Spring-ful, like the beautiful jute of a round rug that makes you want to picnic in the garden, and details such as insects and butterflies highlight how much the collection was inspired by nature.
130
Introducing all of these different elements in a room gives it more character and depth. The luxurious velvet, pretty embroideries and colored glass add interest and elevate this beautiful collection and definitely your home. The leaf-shaped egg holder will add humor and whimsy to any table setting. One of the easiest ways to instantly update and brighten up your bedroom is with the cheerful sunflower duvet cover sets. Add the beautiful ornaments in a palette ranging from pastels to sunny yellow all over your home for a spring, mellow yellow, feel. Johanna Malmgren, Concept Designer at H&M HOME sheds some light on the collection, table setting trends and gave us some great advice that we can easily integrate into our homes today. What were the inspirations for the new collection? Why sunflowers? We wanted to create a collection and a table setting that gives you that fresh spring feel, taking the sun and light as our source of inspiration. The result is a collection with lots of greenery and florals, combined with warm green tones and sunny yellow. Yellow is not only a typical festive color, it’s also a color that makes you happy and the sunflower is a perfect statement flower with its beautiful color and size. What are this year’s table setting trends? For the new collection, we aimed to capture a spring table setting in southern France with that light atmosphere and the feeling of being close to nature. Combining natural materials together with patterns and palettes influenced by florals and greenery brings nature right into your home and creates a lovely table setting for the festive holidays. What is your best advice on how to create a nice table setting for occasions? Don’t be afraid to use color! Set the foundation with a colorful table cloth. Use white dinner plates for a light feeling but work with colorful smaller decorative objects such as mini plates, vases or napkins. Finish it up by adding lots of greenery or florals together with golden cutlery or napkin rings. How do you make a personal festive table setting? For a personal touch, mix vintage with modern items. Your grandmother’s decorative plates with gold rim will get a new life when combined with new stylish glassware or contemporary candle holders.
H&M HOME’s festive collection is available in 1st Avenue - The Avenues, Forum - The Avenues, Al Kout and online during this month. For more information, visit kw.hm.com. 131

As much as we’d like to avoid a similar plotline to the film I, Robot, we can’t resist the cuteness of this robot. The iRobot is a time saving machine that is meant to, basically, mow your lawn. The installation is fairly simple, by placing wireless beacons around your garden, or yard, following a drive around the perimeter, it’ll all be set to operate as the imprint smart mapping technology takes the wheel.
Imagine yourself stranded in the desert, and there’s no signal to be found anywhere...Or don’t! But, the Surecall N-Range cell phone signal booster will be your savior. The gadget is designed to improve and provide connectivity, voice, text, and a 4G LTE signal. The powerful booster will also add strength to cell carriers, and max-up everything in any stranded location where connectivity is much needed, yet tough to catch.
Ever wondered what will a wearable smartphone could look like? Well, it’s not going to resemble the Apple Watch. Nubia Alpha completely blur the lines between phone and watches. Functionality is essentially based around an OLED screen. The wearable smartphone comes with a metal wrist band, and a centered 5MP camera. It also includes 8GB of storage, a heart rate monitor, and a custom version of Android.
Azio’s popular retro keyboards are bringing an additional item to the collection. The compact version comes in sizes of small and large, with a palm rest for comfortable typing. The design of the keyboard itself is similar to that of a vintage typewriter, as it features round keycaps, with a luxurious metal, wood, and leather surface. Yet, the sophistication of the keyboards is due to the ultramodern details.

FREE SPIRIT
LOVE + FEAR By Marina
By Anderson .Paak
After the release of Khalid’s debut album American Teen over two years ago, which achieved critical acclaim and a massive fanbase, the artist is back with another banger! Khalid is promising a release date for Free Spirit during this month. Well known for his musical creativity, Khalid also announced a cinematic debut with an inspired short film of the album itself. “Talk” is the first single from his upcoming album, which was co-written with Disclosure.
We can safely say we've waited long enough for Marina to finally drop an album. Formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, Love + Fear follows her last album, Froot. The four-year hiatus has already taken her to a whole new creative level, where the pop star is demonstrating an entirely new aesthetic emergence in music. After releasing her first three solo tracks from the upcoming album, including “Handmade Heaven” and “Superstar”, the album will release by the end of this month.
The Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul and Funk artist has announced the release of his new upcoming album, Ventura. By mid-month the album should be out for all of us to indulge in Anderson’s dope raps. What makes us look even more forward to Ventura is the fact that Dr. Dre worked on the album as an executive producer. Paak’s new album was inspired by his early days, growing up in Southern California, as the artist is originally from Oxnard, serving us authenticity at its best.

SALUTE TO AL GHOR
The Beirut-based Indie-pop band’s latest release comes as their fourth album. The Beirut School celebrates their ten year anniversary ever since the band made their mark within the Middle East's music industry. The Beirut School is also a tribute to the journey since their last three albums. The Beirut School is available for download and on streaming services. You can also purchase the album, and have it physically in your hands as a vinyl record.
Kuwait’s local psychedelic indie band latest EP, Pantagonia, is filled with futuristic rhythms. The EP is a set with five tracks, each one more chill than the next. Its weird sounds vibrate with an amazing blast from the past of psychedelic pop, as Galaxy Juice’s main influences are canon bands like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Tame Impala. Additionally, there must be a touch of local, nostalgic vibes from their hometown of Kuwait. Stream the album today!
Salute to Al Ghor marks the first album by this six person band. Originating from the city of Irbid in Jordan, Ayloul translates to ‘September’ in Syriac. The band’s music features cinematic Arab roots, crossed with oriental music, cleverly combining influences from the indie rock genre, with dramatic and powerful rhythms from the middle east. The debut album starts with the upbeat track titled “Nazel Al Ghor”, which sums up the album’s aspirations of a more beautiful reality.

This month's feature:
FEEL YOUR BEAT
The ambitious and local Kuwaiti artist, Ghaneema, is serving us freshness with her creatively dropped lyric video. After almost two years since the release of her EP, Bad Habits, the singer and songwriter revived an original track, “Feel Your Beat” which is part of her successful EP. The video, shot by Alaa Ahmad, is a fun lip sync collage of the song, framed to juxtapose the different facial expressions of everyone contributing to it, and at least one part of them featured lip syncing. The energetic feel of “Feel Your Beat”, combined with the thrilling electric guitar played by Omar Salim, made us go back to a replay of Bad Habits, and officially demanding more tracks, and videos from Ghaneema. The video is available on Youtube, support your local talent by checking it out! 136

MORE AMORE
Enjoy new Italian dishes at Cleo Mediterraneo By bazaar staff
The dĂŠcor of Cleo at The Forum - The Avenues rejoices in the juxtaposition of a variety of aesthetic influences, a visual metaphor of the Mediterranean menu that is to be savored and shared. A hint of North African, a touch of Greek and an abundance of talent delivers dips, mezes, mains and desserts that will have you clamoring for more. And now, for a limited time only, you can enjoy the newest of Italian-inspired dishes, an expansion of the Italian element as requested by customers! 138
Believe bazaar when we tell you that the best way to experience Cleo for the first time is with a bunch of close friends so you can sample as much of the menu at once. As we knew that everything we ordered was going to be tasted at the same time by all of us at the table, caution was thrown to the wind, and the kitchen instructed to bring whatever was ready to us. As well as pastas and flatbreads from the new menu we ordered a selection of small plates, kebabs and mains, and to our delight everything arrived exactly as you would have wanted it to had we wanted a more formal serving structure. The kitchen is well organized, and prepared for every eventuality. In addition, the wait staff are well trained, eager to serve and knowledgeable about the menu, cooking methods and sourcing of their finest quality ingredients. The ‘miza’ choices are ideal for sharing and come accompanied by taboon bread, served piping hot and steaming in its very own brown paper bag. Not just any facilitating accompaniment, this is a flat bread that deserves your primary attention. It’s that good that you’ll want to order it as an extra from the ‘sides’ menu. The flatbreads on the limited time only Italian menu are a fusion of cheesy thin crust pizza and morsels that should be popular here such as spiced lamb sausage, or marinated short rib. “Small plates” may be slightly deceptive, as the Rigatoni Bolognese is sizeable due to the al dente pasta tubes being artfully piled high. The Angus Chuck Roll Australian beef for the meat sauce is ground on site and seasoned well, the fresh tomato sauce one that “mamma” would be proud of. The Rigatoni has been a sure fire hit with customers so keeping the popular pasta shape the chefs have added that bastion of simple Italian cooking: pesto. A little bit of grilled chicken and you have the freshest summer pasta to enjoy Chicken Pesto Rigatoni. It’s not summer in the Mediterranean without a seafood dish of course. A creamy herbed tomato sauce is tossed over linguini, calamari, prawns and tender octopus with abandon, tastefully covering the al dente pasta without overpowering the seafood. A poco of pomegranate reduction adds a rich citrus edge. The third new pasta introduced is a buttery rich Alfredo which never fails to satisfy a carby craving. Everything is created in-house in Cleo, so there are little touches that you simply will not find anywhere else. The pickled vegetables come in an array of color, that has to be seen to be believed such as fuchsia, cerise, and amethyst; cauliflower has never looked this royally resplendent. The best use of color must be in the Roasted Vegetable Quinoa Salad, where each element is a star in itself. Light, fresh, crunchy where it needs to be, loaded with powerful antioxidants
from kale and nigella seeds, and protein-rich Faro, this dish must be as healthy as it is utterly delicious. High fives all around for using Romanesco in this salad; surely nothing is more Italian than a bit of Roman. Italy is known for its artistry and they truly are artists in Cleo. Great care is taken with the presentation of the plates, and it must take time to lay the crisped artichokes neatly like soldiers in a foxhole of hummus; the two textures complementing each other well, ready to attack the senses from all sides. Preserved lemon adds bite to the super-light almost mousse-like chickpea meze. Each one of the Green Falafel is exactly the same size as the other and the crunch alone is worthy of a mukbang Instagram post. Moist and with flavor, color plays its part again here with beet-pickled fennel and a nutty citrus tabbouleh accompaniment. With three hearty portions sitting in a rack, the Lamb Shawarma looks like tacos but is in reality a succulence of slow-roasted lamb loaded onto Taboon bread. Juicy, the meat is wonderfully herbed and spiced to perfection. bazaar tip: take a huge bite and eat whole one of the mini pickled peppers on top of the shawarma. Nothing is just for decoration at Cleo, everything is edible and adds layers to the flavor profiles of the dishes. A true test for any restaurant is how skillfully they cook their prawns and the kebabs of tail-on prawns were perfect; gloriously succulent and on the grill for exactly the right amount of time. The dipping harissa sauce is a must try with two types of chili used, parsley and extra-virgin olive oil. Simple and fresh. Another fish dish where the expert hand of the chef cannot be denied is the Branzino. The skin-on serving was at once both crispy and melt in your mouth, the flesh moist and flavorsome with warming and aromatic Vadouvan spices coming gently to the fore. We love the new Strawberry Panna Cotta for a fruity twist on a classic dessert, but. absolutely never leave Cleo without finishing off your meal with at least one of two other desserts; the apple pie or the date pudding. Each are topped off with the restaurant’s home-made vanilla ice cream. The
pudding lounges in a butterscotch sauce, the mere hint of a burn contrasting with the sweetness of the sticky dessert, a mixed nuts Florentine adding crunch to the ensemble. The apple pie comes fresh out of the oven, the filo-pastry basket surrounding spiced apples hot with sugary sweetness. However, if you want a return to Arab roots at the end of your culinary travels the Um Ali is a new addition to the menu and utterly comforting. A delightful way to end an exquisite, gourmand adventure through the countries lapped by the seas of the Mediterranean.
The new Italian Menu is only available for a limited time. Cleo Mediterráneo is located in The Forum - The Avenues. For more information and the latest updates follow the restaurant on Facebook and Instagram @cleomiddleeast and DM them for inquiries.

PROMENADE CULTURE CENTRE Contributing to the community By bazaar staff
It is always good to talk, and Promenade Culture Centre (PCC) is a multi-purpose space where conversations are happening that bring communities together, driving forward action on social issues and raising awareness on socially responsible activities. Our understanding has never been keener, that positive thoughts lead to positive words which lead to positive actions. The environment in which we communicate can help facilitate positive interpersonal engagement, no matter the subject. Filled with the natural light which streams through windows that arc around the side of the tower building 142
like a revealing truth, the second-floor main hall is large enough to be comfortable to host a substantial group plus a significant break-out area in the same room. The largest regularly held event is for a mixed diwaniya, where topics effecting the local community are often considered as well as broader thoughts and ideas. Within the hall, the facilities include a sound system, pop-up screen, and can include seating for up to 300 people. PCC is able to advise you on the seating and interior arrangements that may best suit your gathering or conference, a skilled team setting up in a timely manner before your event and on hand during, in case you have any requests or need any help with the IT facilities. The hall can be at once both corporate and more relaxed, so businesses as well as charities and social organizations are able to use PCC effectively. It is also great for showing films
or presentations and hosting panel discussions and lectures. "Mind Matter Lecture and Workshop Series" is a collaboration between AUK Art & Graphic Design Department and PCC which also makes for a very generous exhibition space for all kinds of art installations and performances. Professor Marcella Kulchitsky from AUK says, "PCC not only offers fabulous views of Kuwait City from the gallery but also offers our graduating design students the professional exposure we believe they've earned with their projects." As well as these lectures you can also catch a thought provoking series of debates "Niqashna", with all generations being represented in the audience, as we strive to respect each other’s opinions on topics which are hard to talk about, brave to broach but easier to do set in an environment like Promenade Culture Centre.
As with The Promenade itself, and the incubator Soapbox on the mezzanine floor, many activities focus on Kuwait’s future. This is not only in the abstract but literally, with younger children being catered for through creative workshops which are fun and educational at the same time. Recent research has shown that younger children may be more exposed to English, through streaming and YouTube, and not learning Arabic at home as a first language. One organization uses the bright, colorful PCC workrooms to host creative play teaching young children Arabic. If you’d like a more intimate space that feels less exposed while you discuss business, formulate plans or simply review books over coffee, PCC has three workrooms of varying sizes available for use. As many of us work remotely or in satellite offices this is also a good way to bring distant team members together for thought-shower sessions or it can be a stimulating way to change your environment and get the creative juices flowing again. Each workroom has a large TV screen, air-conditioning, WiFi and is furnished with fabric couches, brightly colored armchairs and cushions. These can be swapped out for simple chairs or bean bags depending on how you’d like the ambiance to be. Portable whiteboards are available for use too. The largest of the workrooms also features an overhead projector and drop-down screen making it one of the most engaging communication environments to be in. What a wonderful way for a book club to compare a movie to their last read! While it may be easy to talk about healthy life styles, environmental concerns and supporting good causes, Promenade Culture Centre walks the talk. Subsidized events have been hosted where you can see and talk to vendors about the projects they care about and purchase the artisanal and craft goods they produce. The Craft Markets held in the spring and winter are something to look forward to. Because of its high ceilings and stretch of windows, PCC always feels spacious, even when filled with the chattering and bustling of people around the forty tables at the markets. Many vendors put their profits toward purchasing supplies for charitable causes, so it is invaluable to use a generously subsidized location like PCC. “It is a great platform for art and crafters and the team is so supportive. It’s a feel-good community place,” says Elaine Haider who curates the markets. “PCC ticks all the boxes as there is plenty of parking, and it’s strategically placed off 3rd Ring.” There is also plenty to do if you want to take your family to The Promenade and keep them busy while you are enjoying a PCC event. The children can physically exhaust themselves in Trampo, take an ice-skating lesson, a trundle around the walking track or experience the challenge of an escape room. You can even meet up afterwards and indulge in healthier eating options in the food court!
Promenade Culture Centre can be found on the second floor of The Promenade. Follow the Instagram account @promenadeculturecentre for regular updates on events and exhibitions. 143

SWEETEN YOUR TASTE BUDS WITH NATURAL FLAVORS FROM ONLY JUICE As the temperatures are rising, it’s time to cool down with fresh, flavorful and anti-oxidant rich juices from ONLY. We all love our dose of juice as part of a healthier lifestyle, and ONLY Juice is perfect to kickstart that healthy habit. Why we love this juice range? First off, it’s completely organic, doesn’t have any added sugars or harmful preservatives, and is 100% natural. There’s always a huge misconception with organic products. Not all organic products are created equally, as some companies choose to use chemical preservatives, and even add sugars to enhance flavor, claiming that these sugars are natural. To avoid disappointment, and to keep your health plan on track, it is best to always read the ingredients list and labels on any product packaging to see if artificial sugars are used. This is why we simply love ONLY, what you see, is what you taste, and we’re choosing to cool down this April with their apricot, pomegranate and cherry juice offerings. Shop Only juices from Makani Market, @makanikw, or order online via the Talabia application, @talabiakw and for more information follow @Alyasrafoods on Instagram.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 The past and present are clashing on you. If you’re overwhelmed by memories, or a specific incident that was left unresolved, address and resolve it for good. Don’t look at what’s behind you, unless it’s taking a toll on you, there’s work that needs to be done. Plan a trip, you never know, you might profit from it, and it could add a new perspective. Surprises are just around the horizon.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20
As an Earth sign, working hard is within your traits. Perhaps a day or two of rest will keep your motivation going. When you wake up in the morning, and the feeling of simply staying in bed strikes, then take it without any shame! You deserve a couple days of rest, relaxation, and chill vibes to get back on the game the next day! Do what must be done for the sake of yourself.
GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21
Sensing the adventure vibes from afar? Embrace it! You’re going to start meeting new and interesting people more often than usual, they will occupy your mind. Traveling to exotic places could be just the right spot for that. Friends might make last-minute calls with various activity suggestions. Don’t slack off, and hop onto the adventure train. Because if you don’t, it’ll leave you on edge.
CAPRICON DEC 22 – JAN 19 Personal or professional changes might suddenly creep into your path. A new job opportunity? Meeting someone who will change the course of your life and make an impact? You’ll know it once you see it, luck is on your side, so savor it as it’s peaking with positivity! And that will last with you for a while. Consume all the optimism and enthusiasm of what’s about to come knocking on your door.
AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18
Keep your duality in check. There may be some provocative behavior that will occur around you, triggering some suppressed anger within you. Keep your communication skills on check to use them properly when the situation pops. Calm yourself before approaching anything triggering, and perhaps, calm yourself before seeing any kind of careless, or irresponsible behavior.
You’ll start contemplating certain changes that are surrounding your personal environment. People will move in and out of your life, but you are known for simply going with the flow, just like your elemental wind. So, fully run hand-in-hand with air. These changes are merely an expansion into your inner and outer worlds, focus on yourself, and study those changes carefully. Don’t mind the results more than minding your own mind.
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19
New information will be swarming around you. Don’t believe everything that comes your way, as a water sign, you tend to get carried away with your emotions, so don’t place your judgement too fast. Instead, sit down with yourself, go through every aspect, and then make a logical decision, with a bit of your inner instincts. Keep away and avoid any type of intoxicating and negative gossip.
Communication has always been a struggle for you. Better communication will start paving your way towards personal and professional advancements. New understandings will unravel themselves with colleagues, and the closest people to you. Get creatively artistic, try new forms of art that will distract you from any type of confusion. You’ll start seeing improvements in your relationships, free yourself from your controlling emotions while dealing with others, it’ll alleviate the edge.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 No one can stop a Leo from showering themselves with treats. But, be careful of financial errors, keep checking particular figures that are coming your way. Whether you’re spending too much, which is usually the case, or being irresponsible with your work interests. Try to keep track of things, turn up the volume in your mind, and start working for yourself. Avoid relying on others too much, stay focused.
VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22
ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 While Aries do tend to be on top of things, you are most likely planning for a big trip soon. We are all aware of the usual saying, you get to know your mate better when traveling together. As you’ll also be sharing this trip with someone that is special to you, be cautious when it comes to temperamant, and mood swings. Instead, focus on the endless possibilities, and a wonderful trip.
If you're feeling antisocial, then use the opportunity to your advantage. Stay at home, watch a great film, or start a new series. Read something new, and indulge yourself rather than the rest of the outside world. Balance your needs, mentally and physically. Disconnect and connect proportionally, you are a perfectionist after all! Once balance is achieved, you’ll wake up with a brand new attitude.
LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 There’s tension surrounding your elemental air. As a prominent, and mostly successful peacemaker, you continue to shake away, and bury major instincts of doubt. You may be right or wrong, dig deeper into those instincts, explore them carefully, and revise your actions. The reason behind it can either be doubting yourself, or doubting someone else. If that’s the case, then have patience, this information will naturally reveal itself in good time.
