About the Cover: This month, we collaborated with Talabat to celebrate delivery drivers, the unsung heroes who keep our daily lives running smoothly during Ramadan. We are choosing to honor their effort and the perilous journeys they undertake often while fasting and navigating what we could best describe as unruly streets. They ensure that our meals, groceries, and essentials arrive at our doors on time! Their dedication and resilience, often overlooked, deserve our appreciation as they work tirelessly to serve others while observing the holy month, so keep that in mind the next time your crispy, hot samboosas arrive at your doorsteps in time for futoor.
Hello March, hello Ramadan, hello that special time of year when almost everyone walks around in a daze all day, followed by a food coma after futoor, wash, rinse, and repeat all month long.
Obviously, we’re all old pros by now at dealing with Ramadan here, and we all know the golden rules: Don’t get into any road rage squabbles under any circumstances, don’t expect people to reply to any emails before 11 am, don’t try to meet anyone before 12 pm, don’t go to the supermarket during the first week of Ramadan, don’t ever go food shopping while fasting, and of course if you are invited out for futoor, make sure you get to where you’re going early’ish, and under no circumstances get caught out on the roads exactly at sunset, since that’s when the streets are at their craziest with everyone frantically trying to get where they’re going at the same time!
That said, this issue is here to help you pass the time while you wait for the Maghrib prayer to be called. As always, we find the most inspiration from speaking with some truly incredible individuals who are making an impact in their fields. Dr. Majedah Barrak Alzanki is revolutionizing diagnostic and interventional radiology at Taiba Hospital, offering cutting-edge treatments that transform patients’ lives. Meanwhile, Abdullah Alsoudan is redefining local tourism in Kuwait through his company, Happidaze, creating immersive experiences that connect people with the country’s rich culture and traditions. And finally, we explored the visionary world of Coralie Charriol, whose creative endeavors continue to leave a lasting mark. Each of these remarkable figures shared their passion, dedication, and unique perspectives, making this issue a testament to the power of innovation and human connection.
We are always excited to showcase artists who create with purpose. Photography has long been a tool of storytelling, but in Gaza Habibti, it becomes a powerful act of reclamation. This exhibition, brought to Kuwait by Yura Visuals and Untold Palestine, challenges colonial narratives and honors the lives of Palestinians through striking, deeply personal images. From the resilience of Gaza’s photographers to the emotional memorial installation, Gaza Habibti is more than an exhibition—it’s a testament to hope, dignity, and the enduring power of art. Running from April 6–12 at Contemporary Art Platform, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

GAZA HABIBTI
Reclaiming Palestinian Narratives one photo at a time
By Reem Al Gharabally
Gaza Habibti is a photography exhibition that uses photojournalism to tell stories that challenge stereotypical narratives about Palestinians, presented by Berlin based non-profit Yura Visuals and its sister project Untold Palestine. After successful runs in several European, Arab, North and South American cities it is coming to Kuwait from April 6 to April 12 at Contemporary Art Platform in Shuwaikh in collaboration with the Palestine Film Festival Kuwait and Jump Kuwait. Bazaar spoke to the director of the exhibition, photographer Mohamed Badarne and social designer Haya El Khoury who spoke about the power of art to shift the narrative.
“What motivated us to start Untold Palestine was to reclaim our own narrative,” said Mohamed. “We wanted to challenge this image created by colonialism of Palestinians as powerless people without a culture who are always the victim. We work with about 25 photographers in Gaza and the West Bank. With the start of the war, we had a responsibility to support them and we did it by giving them a platform to sell their work as a way to meet their daily needs.”
This was the start of Gaza Habibti exhibition, that also honors the memory of thousands of Palestinians who lost their lives during the genocide in Gaza.
Mohamed worked as a high school teacher and with human rights organizations for many years before dedicating himself to photography.
He combined his interest in human rights and his experience as a teacher to teach photography workshops. His first exhibition was “Come back Safely” which documented the poor work and safety conditions of Palestinian construction workers in occupied Palestine.
“My focus was always on human rights and social change,” he says. “Many occupying powers around the world used photography and visual arts as a medium of control and to create stereotypes. We are also challenging the Arab image of the Palestinian as the hero. I mean, we are heroes – that’s obvious - but we can also sing and dance and swim and laugh and enjoy ourselves. All the struggle, all the resistance is about having the right to dance, to live, to enjoy life.”
Gaza Habibti depicts that reality.
The center piece of the exhibition is an installation of 1000 photos of martyrs depicting them in their daily life before the war.
“In this exhibition we’re talking about hope but there’s also a reality of things. For me the hardest part of the installation is the photographs of the martyrs,” says Haya El Khoury. “The interaction of the audience with the Memorial is very intense. They’re beautiful pictures. They’re smiling. There were cases where audience members did not realize they were photos of people who had passed away or they were finding people they knew that passed away. Or maybe they heard about it in the news, but there wasn’t a tribute to that person, and now they see it, and it is part of the exhibition. There is an importance to that. They are not just numbers,” says Haya El Khoury.
An architect by profession, Haya decided to dedicate herself full time to humanitarian work and art to make a difference on a grassroots and community level.
“Our slogan for Yura visuals is “Each story matters””, says Haya. “It’s a human responsibility to try to uncover some of these stories.”
Yura Visuals intend to expand their work to cover stories from Sudan and Yemen and other parts of the Arabic speaking world. As a Berlin based collective, they are working in a challenging environment hostile to Palestinian voices. We asked what it was like presenting the exhibition in that environment.
“There wasn’t even time to think twice about it,” says Haya. “Personally, I felt like there’s something that had to be done. We were not thinking about the consequences. During every exhibition we were scared whether the police were going to come or not? But this never stopped us, nor the gallery owner, nor the volunteers. We just did it. We want the exhibition to happen wherever the space is. If it’s small, we have an option for that. If it’s huge, we have an option for that. If there’s no money, we have an option for that. We just want to make it happen.”
As a non-profit exhibition Gaza Habibti operates on an egalitarian distribution system. Fifty per cent of the proceeds go to the photographers who sell their work and fifty percent is distributed equally among all the photographers in the collective. Tote bags, post cards and other merchandise is used to fund future productions.
“This is not a charity case, the photographers are working as professionals. We are supporting their dignity through artistic work and professionalism. That’s what we’re trying to do amidst this chaos,” says Haya.
With the start of the war the collective started training new photographers, especially women, created opportunities for them to work across many platforms and media channels like BBC, CNN and Al-Jazeera.
Having taken the exhibition around the world with two shows planned in Paris and Marseilles later in the year, Mohamed says the upcoming Kuwait show has a special meaning for them.
“An exhibition in Kuwait is different than one in Amsterdam,” he says. “When exhibiting in the Arab world you feel like the audience is your family.”
Gaza Habibti will run from April 6 to April 12 at the Contemporary Art Platform, opening on April 6 in conjunction with the 2025 Palestine Film Festival. For enquiries about the exhibition in Kuwait and the Palestine Film Festival Kuwait contact @palestinefilmfest_kuwait

& Other Stories’ new Ramadan Capsule Collection presents a curated selection of pieces that embody elegance, sophistication, and a sense of relaxed glamour. As a brand known for its attention to detail and timeless designs, & Other Stories has once again excelled in offering a collection that resonates deeply with the spirit of Ramadan and Eid.
These occasions are not only significant for their religious and cultural importance but also for the way they bring communities together in celebration and reflection. The exclusive 2025 collection is designed to honor these traditions while introducing contemporary elements that appeal to modern sensibilities, ensuring that every piece is both meaningful and stylish.
“This collection was born from the idea of modernity blending with tradition,” says Malin Sone, Head of Design at & Other Stories. “We focused on creating pieces that exude elegance through rich textures and thoughtful details.”
The 13-piece collection features flowing dresses in leopard print and lime, a burgundy suit with a gold metallic buckle fastening, and a sleek
evening pyjama suit. Relaxed, draped garments like the kaftan provide classic sophistication, while a refined jumpsuit captures modern ease.
The color palette showcases subtle nougat tones complemented by rich gold, with purple and lime as accent colors. Golden metallic accessories such as a clutch bag and jewelry shaped like blossoming roses enhance the look, and a soft leopard print introduces a playful yet refined touch. Flowing fabrics were carefully selected to elegantly complement the designs resulting in graceful drapes, vibrant colors, and rich textures that elevate the pieces with a sense of refinement and ease.
The campaign, featuring Tunisian model Meriam Turki, celebrates the theme of duality—
day and night, movement and stillness— demonstrating how elegance can be both bold and understated. Each piece is designed to embody this harmony, offering wearers versatile options that easily transition from morning to evening.
“Every piece in this collection is designed to be a statement of elegance,” Sone adds.
“From the intricate detailing to the colour palette, we focused on creating garments that make an impact while maintaining an effortless sophistication.”
The & Other Stories 2025 Ramadan Capsule Collection will be available in selected stores starting on the 6th of February.
EXPLORE KUWAIT WITH ABDULLAH ALSOUDAN
Local tourism that will change how you see Kuwait and connect with others
By bazaar Staff
Abdullah Alsoudan is a social and peopleloving entrepreneur who has carved out a unique space in Kuwait’s tourism industry. As the founder of Happidaze (which is pronounced like Happy Days) he has turned his passion for meeting new people into a thriving local tour operation.
Abdullah’s journey into tourism was serendipitous. He initially joined group tours as a participant, drawn to the dynamic interactions and the diversity of people. “Humans are very interesting, beautiful creatures,” he reflects. His love for engaging with others naturally led him to guide tours himself, starting with international trips. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to pivot his focus toward local tourism. Friends and former travel companions encouraged him to organize experiences within Kuwait, and thus, his journey as a local tour operator began.
With this shift, Abdullah had to embrace social media to promote his tours. “I didn’t even have a public account before,” he recalls, but the need to reach a wider audience pushed him to step into the public eye. His tours quickly gained popularity, thanks to his emphasis on experience over mere sightseeing. “I focus more on experiences, not necessarily on specific destinations,” he explains. From reviving traditional Kuwaiti celebrations like the pre-Ramadan Graish to curating immersive cultural experiences, Abdullah ensures his tours offer more than just a glimpse into Kuwait—they offer memories.
His company, Happidaze, is built on the philosophy that everyone deserves joy. While his tours are open to all, they are primarily designed for adults rather than children. “Everybody needs happiness,” he says, emphasizing that the atmosphere he creates is key to the success of his tours. Unlike standard itineraries that simply move from one attraction to another, Abdullah takes pride in fostering a sense of community among his participants. “I ensure everybody is happy, everybody knows each other,” he notes.
One of his most memorable tours was last year’s National Day Fiesta. Inspired by his family’s tradition of renting a bus and celebrating with music and flags, Abdullah brought the same spirit to his clients. “What made it special was the introduction of a traditional ladies’ band,” he says. Coordinating this was no easy feat, as the musicians were not
accustomed to working outside of weddings or engaging in business agreements. However, the challenge was worth it. “The result was absolutely astonishing. Everybody was happy. The tour got the exposure it deserved.”
Despite his success, Abdullah faces challenges, particularly in raising awareness about local tourism. “People always ask, ‘Do we actually have tourism in Kuwait?’” he says. Changing this perception is part of his mission, and he has seen progress through the enthusiastic participation of locals and businesses. “Businesses are very supportive, wanting to be part of this tour, providing services, and contributing to the experience.”
Looking ahead, Abdullah dreams of developing a tour focused on Kuwait’s diverse plant species, adding another layer to his immersive experiences. He also hopes to explore South America, one of the few parts of the world he has yet to visit. Through it all, his approach remains rooted in authenticity. “My content stands out because it’s real. I stay close to people and how they think, rather than focusing on everything being perfect.”
For visitors to Kuwait, Abdullah has one key piece of advice: “Meet a local.” With a country still developing its tourism infrastructure, the experience of a knowledgeable local guide can make all the difference. And with Abdullah leading the way, discovering Kuwait becomes not just a journey, but an unforgettable adventure.

10 HABITS OF HIGHLY CREATIVE PEOPLE
Lessons to Spark Your Own Creativity
By bazaar staff
Creativity is often seen as an elusive gift, something that only a select few possess. However, successful creatives—from artists and writers to entrepreneurs and designers—have developed habits that allow them to tap into their imagination and turn ideas into reality. The key lies in balancing inspiration with productivity. Here are 10 habits highly creative people adopt to stay inspired and consistently productive.
1. They Make Time for Creativity
One of the most important habits of highly creative individuals is setting aside dedicated time for creative work. It’s easy to get distracted by daily responsibilities, but successful creatives prioritize their creative endeavors by carving out time in their schedule. Whether it’s first thing in the morning or late at night, creating a consistent routine helps build momentum.
2. They Embrace the “Messy” Process
Creative work is rarely neat and orderly, and those who thrive in creativity understand that the process can be messy. Rather than striving for perfection from the start, they embrace mistakes and use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Author Anne Lamott famously said, “Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts.” Embracing imperfection is key to fostering creativity.
3. They Seek Inspiration Everywhere
Highly creative people are always on the lookout for new ideas, whether they’re exploring nature, reading books, or observing everyday life. They understand that inspiration can strike at any moment and are open to absorbing the world around them. This constant curiosity allows them to see connections others might miss.
4. They Don’t Wait for Motivation—They Start Anyway
Creativity doesn’t always come in a flash of inspiration. Successful creatives know that motivation often follows action. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect idea, they simply start. By overcoming initial inertia and taking small steps, they allow ideas to flow and grow over time.
5. They Take Breaks to Recharge
Creativity thrives when the mind is refreshed. Highly creative people don’t push themselves to work non-stop; they understand the importance of rest. Taking regular breaks and even engaging in non-work activities, like walking or meditating, helps their minds reset and return to their creative work with renewed focus.
6. They Practice Consistency Over Perfection
While many creatives strive for perfection, successful individuals prioritize consistent effort over flawless execution. By consistently showing up
and putting in the work, they build habits that foster creativity. As author Austin Kleon notes in Steal Like an Artist, “You don’t have to be a genius; you just have to be consistent.”
7. They Collaborate with Others
Creative minds understand the power of collaboration. They surround themselves with other creative individuals who can offer fresh perspectives and new ideas. Whether through brainstorming sessions or sharing feedback, collaboration enhances creativity by bringing diverse viewpoints to the table.
8. They Embrace Failure as Part of the Journey
Highly creative people know that failure is an inevitable part of the creative process. Instead of fearing failure, they embrace it as a necessary step toward growth. Every failed attempt brings them closer to their goal and provides valuable lessons for their next project.
9. They Keep a Journal or Sketchbook
Many successful creatives maintain journals,
sketchbooks, or notebooks to capture their thoughts, ideas, and observations. These notebooks serve as creative outlets and help individuals develop their ideas further. By regularly jotting down thoughts and sketches, they create a treasure trove of inspiration to refer back to when they need it.
10. They Stay Curious and Open-Minded
Curiosity is a hallmark of highly creative people. They remain open to new experiences, ideas, and perspectives, which helps them stay adaptable and innovative. Whether learning a new skill, reading about a different topic, or exploring a new culture, curiosity keeps their creative spark alive.
The most successful creative people don’t rely solely on inspiration; they cultivate habits that allow them to consistently generate and refine their ideas. By embracing imperfection, maintaining consistency, and staying curious, anyone can foster their own creativity and turn their ideas into tangible projects.

IN CONVERSATION WITH CORALIE CHARRIOL
Leading the legacy of Swiss Luxury
By bazaar Staff
It’s not every day we meet an amazing creative and business mogul who is carrying her namesake brand with its history into the future. Coralie Charriol, the dynamic CEO and Creative Director of Charriol, a renowned Swiss luxury brand specializing in watches and fine jewelry, has been at the helm since 2019, following her father’s passing, Philippe Charriol, who founded the company in 1983. With an unwavering commitment to her father’s legacy, Coralie expertly guides the brand’s creative direction and business operations. Recently, she made a significant visit to Kuwait to launch Charriol’s exquisite diamond watches and 18K gold fine Jewelry collection, celebrating the brand’s heritage, craftsmanship, and modern luxury. We sat down with her to learn more about the collection, her visit to Kuwait, and how she thinks the future might unfold.
What inspired Charriol’s new diamond collection, and what makes it unique compared to previous collections?
I’ve been designing jewelry for a very long time and I love it. It’s one of my favorite things that I do, and I’ve designed many collections over the past years. A lot of it is steel and gold-plated, but I wanted to play more with solid 18k gold and diamonds. And since I was born in April, I’m a diamond girl, and I absolutely love diamonds. So when designing, my starting point was still many of the brand’s key motifs dating back 3 or 4 decades, but reworking those designs with 18-karat gold and diamonds as my material. So the collection still bears the codes of the Maison are there, such as the iconic cables we are known for around the world.
How does this collection reflect the legacy of the Charriol brand while embracing modern luxury trends?
Charriol is a 40-year-old brand with a strong identity that uses the cable material, that is made of stainless steel in our factory in Switzerland. It’s a beautiful 27-step artisanal process that is unique to Charriol. So, I believe that if I design using this material which is the DNA of Charriol, I can do anything! It is how I color within the lines, but I can use all the colors I want.
What emotions or stories do you hope the new pieces will convey to those who wear them? Well, for me, jewelry holds a lot of emotions usually more than clothes. I love clothes, shoes and accessories for sure, but jewelry can really stand the test of time versus high fashion. It holds stories and meaning as you pass them on to your loved ones. When women buy jewelry for themselves, it has meaning. When they get it from somebody else, it has meaning. You can ask every woman you know about each piece of jewelry they’re wearing, and they will have a story. every piece of jewelry carries a story. I love that about it. In addition, no matter what size and shape you are, a necklace or ring or earrings will always fit. At the end of the day , it’s about feeling good and feeling confident.
Kuwait has a strong appreciation for fine jewelry and luxury craftsmanship. How does this collection align with the tastes and preferences of the region’s clientele?
I design for the universal woman, I design using “les codes de la maison” , as well as the brand ethos and heritage. I hope that with the messaging and the design people will feel a connection to the brand, that it’s relevant and meaningful to them. Design, craftsmanship and respectful messaging are the three most important things you need to touch you clientele in Kuwait.
What does it mean to you personally to connect with VIP guests in Kuwait for this exclusive unveiling?
This is the reward of my job, to see and to meet our clients, to talk to them, to tell them the story, to connect with them and to see them try on the products - and purchase something they will wear and use in their daily busy lives - is what I am so grateful for. For me, it’s the biggest compliment I can receive!
As CEO, how do you balance honoring the brand’s design legacy with innovating and pushing Charriol into the future?
It is one of the biggest struggles, and for any brand that has a very specific look. How do you constantly innovate but stay relevant and not lose what you’re known for? That is the magic formula. I think you really must listen to your end consumer. You have to listen to your salespeople on the ground. You must be open. We’re an independent privatelyowned family company, so we can react fast to trends and market requests.
I have my finger on the pulse. I know that smartwatches and smart jewelry are trending, that the color gold is of the moment. I know that
people’s shopping habits have changed, so we’re changing with them.
Looking ahead, what can Charriol enthusiasts expect in terms of upcoming designs, collaborations, or expansion plans?
Well, the GCC countries for Charriol have always been a vital market. We are still growing after 40 years, and we’ve been in Kuwait for 30 years where Trafalgar Group has supported us for many years. We are also growing very fast in Saudi Arabia - where we just opened our fifth stand-alone boutique in the Kingdom, and our first in Riyadh - and across the UAE. I am in the GCC at least every 6 months, and usually every quarter, to help Charriol to grow in this market - not just with more boutiques, but with new experiences. In terms of new products, I have designed a new ladies “bijoux montre” colelction, which I will unveil at the prestigious Watches & Wonders fair in Geneva Switzerland on April 1st, so stay tuned!

THE CULT OF PERSONAL STYLE
How Fashion Became a Form of Identity
By bazaar staff
In today’s fast-paced world, where trends seem to change at the speed of a click, personal style has become more than just an expression of fashion. It’s a declaration of identity—a form of self-expression, power, and belonging. We live in an era where individuality is not just celebrated; it’s revered. And personal style has become the holy grail of that individuality.
What started as a practical way to differentiate oneself has morphed into a cultural phenomenon, fueling the rise of the “cult” of personal style. Influencers, celebrities, and even everyday individuals have embraced this cult with open arms, creating their own unique fashion personas that speak louder than words.
A Form of Self-Expression
Fashion, historically, has always been a reflection of one’s social status, profession, or cultural background. But as we move into the 21st century, clothing has become a much more powerful tool in the creation of self-image. Personal style allows individuals to communicate their values, preferences, and sometimes even their political or social stances. Take the rise of “normcore” as an example. This trend, which emerged in the early 2010s, encouraged embracing the mundane—think sneakers, jeans, and basic tees. The appeal was clear: It was about rejecting the need to constantly impress with highfashion looks and, instead, focusing on comfort and authenticity. For many, this laid the foundation for a personal style that celebrated individuality over conformity. It was a rejection of mainstream fashion, and in doing so, it created an entirely new trend that’s still relevant today.
Similarly, today’s fashion influencers use social media platforms like Instagram to project curated versions of themselves—combining style, mood, and lifestyle in a way that resonates deeply with their audience. They know that style is a form of storytelling. Every outfit tells a story of who they are, where they’ve been, and where they’re headed.
The Influence of Social Media
The rise of social media has played a significant role in amplifying the “cult” of personal style. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest have turned everyday individuals into style icons. In a space where self-presentation is at the forefront, users can curate their identities with just a few clicks—transforming their feeds into a personal runway of sorts.
Personal style is no longer confined to the upper echelons of fashion. The democratization of fashion through social media means that anyone, from a teenager in a small town to a celebrity in the heart of Hollywood, can carve out a space for themselves in the global style conversation. The influence of hashtags like #OOTD (Outfit of the Day) has made fashion a daily ritual—people are now sharing their outfits with the world, cementing their place in this ever-evolving cultural moment.
But while social media offers a platform for anyone to be a style icon, it also feeds into the cult-like nature of personal style. The pursuit of the “perfect” look can lead to a constant comparison between oneself and others. The pressure to keep up with trends, create a visually cohesive Instagram feed, and remain relevant within the fashion world can feel like an endless pursuit of perfection. It’s no wonder that many individuals are turning personal style into a form of their own private cult—where the rules are flexible, and self-identity is the most important thing.
The Intersection of Fashion and Identity
Today, fashion is a way for people to assert their identity. The “cult” of personal style is evident in the way individuals choose clothing as a form of armor. Whether it’s the punk rock aesthetic that emerged in the ‘70s, the glam of the ‘80s, or the minimalist chic of the ‘90s, fashion has always been a reflection of the times. But now, it’s more personal than ever. Take, for instance, the rise of sustainable fashion, which has sparked a revolution of conscientious consumers who view their clothing choices as a moral and ethical stance. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about making a statement. Wearing sustainable fashion has become a form of activism for those who value the environment and the future of the planet. Similarly, fashion has become increasingly inclusive, giving people of all sizes, races, and backgrounds the opportunity to find styles that speak to their personal experiences. This has led to the rise of niche styles—such as Afro-futurism, which merges African culture with futuristic aesthetics, or vintage fashion, which brings the past into the present. Personal style today is as much about embracing

Jewelry has always been more than mere adornment; it is a testament to the rich tapestry of cultural heritage and tradition passed through generations. Each piece tells a story, not just of the artisan’s craft but of the people, their beliefs, and their history. When jewelry carries the essence of cultural traditions, it becomes a symbol of identity and pride, weaving together the past and the present in an intricate dance of design and emotion. The beauty of such jewelry lies in its ability to evoke memories, convey deep sentiments, and reflect the unique artistic expressions of a culture.
This Ramadan, Azza Fahmy Jewellery presents a curated selection of exquisite pieces from the Turath, El Nur, and Soraya families, celebrating heritage, artistry, and sentiment. The collection highlights the Tribal Calligraphy Choker, a poetic calligraphy-engraved piece that beautifully expresses love and laughter, alongside limited-edition Ottomaninspired earrings and rings, featuring crescent and star motifs adorned with diamonds, sapphires, and rubies—symbols of luminous beauty and divine harmony.
Steeped in spirituality, the selection includes rosaries inscribed with prayers, reflecting faith and devotion, alongside the iconic Victorian-inspired Beaded Crescent Necklace, where cascading beadwork and an Ottoman crescent are paired with a heartfelt inscription. Completing the selection, the Stackable Bangle and Signature Calligraphy Ring intertwine calligraphy, filigree, and precious stones, embodying love, happiness, and tradition. Curated for the season’s cherished moments, these timeless creations offer the perfect touch of elegance for Ramadan.

A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD TITLE FOR THE TAYCAN
Drifting 17 kilometers nonstop on ice
By bazaar Staff
The Porsche Experience team in Lapland set a Guinness World Records title for the longest continuous vehicle drift on ice by an electric vehicle: At the wheel of a Taycan GTS, instructor Jens Richter managed to complete a total of 132 laps in controlled oversteer. In 46 minutes, he covered exactly 17.503 kilometers. With this new record, the electric sports car from Porsche has collected its fourth Guinness World Records title.
The record hunt with Porsche Experience instructor Jens Richter behind the wheel began on the afternoon of January 14, 2025 under difficult external conditions.
“Under the extreme continuous load of the drifting Taycan, the ice track deteriorated faster than expected,” said Jens Richter, describing the challenges.
“We therefore had to abort the first attempt after around 11 kilometers.”
For the second attempt, the team switched to shorter spikes and took advantage of the fact that the ice temperatures dropped again as darkness
fell. This attempt was successful: Jens Richter kept the standard Taycan GTS in a controlled drift for a total of 17.503 kilometers or 132 laps using only throttle and steering interventions. With this distance, he secured the world record for the longest uninterrupted drift of an electric car on ice and significantly exceeded the previous record of 14.809 kilometers.
“With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities,” said Jens Richter.
“And this time even with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so well even under extreme conditions speaks volumes for its excellent chassis and balanced performance.”
Under the supervision of an official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, the drive took place on an ice track at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland, around 150 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. For the record attempt, the Porsche Experience team had created a drift circle with a diameter of 59 meters. Commercially available Michelin tires with one-millimetre spikes were mounted on both axles of the Taycan GTS for the successful record attempt.
The vehicle was equipped with a professional GPS measuring device to measure the route precisely. This not only documents the distance travelled, but also records the driver’s actions such as steering wheel movements, accelerator and braking, and the G-forces acting on the vehicle.
Carl Saville was present as the official adjudicator from Guinness World Records. Immediately afterwards, he presented the record certificate to the driver Jens Richter and to Christian Lehwald, Managing Director of the Porsche Arctic Center and Head of Porsche Experience and New Platforms at Porsche AG. “Our experiential marketing approach involves
always trying out unusual things. In the Porsche Arctic Center, we find exceptionally good conditions for drifting on ice. With the new Taycan GTS, we have one of the most powerful electric vehicles on the market. So we were pretty confident that we could break the world record with this combination and accepted the challenge,” says Christian Lehwald. With the new best performance, the electric sports car holds four record certificates: In 2023, Porsche set another Guinness World Records title with the Taycan Cross Turismo along the Xinjiang-Tibet route. At 5,573 meters, the model mastered the greatest altitude change by an electric car.
In 2021, racing driver Leh Keen accelerated a Porsche Taycan to 165.1 km/h in an exhibition hall in New Orleans, Louisiana. He thus set the record at the time for the fastest speed driven by a vehicle in an enclosed building. And in 2020, Porsche Experience instructor Dennis Retera drifted exactly 210 laps in a Taycan at the Porsche Experience Center (PEC) Hockenheimring, covering 42.171 kilometers in 55 minutes.

Shortlist announced for the 2025 International Prize for Arabic Fiction
By bazaar Staff
Danshmand by Ahmed Fal Al Din, The Valley of the Butterflies by Azher Jirjees, The Andalusian Messiah by Taissier Khalaf, The Prayer of Anxiety by Mohamed Samir Nada, The Touch of Light by Nadia Najar, and The Women’s Charter by Haneen Al-Sayegh have today been announced as the six shortlisted works for the 18th International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF). The winner will be announced on Thursday 24 April 2025 in Abu Dhabi.
The shortlist was revealed at a press conference at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt by this year’s Chair of Judges, Egyptian academic, Mona Baker. She appeared alongside her fellow judges –Moroccan academic and critic Said Bengrad, Emirati critic and academic Maryam Al Hashimi, Lebanese researcher and academic Bilal Orfali, and Finnish translator Sampsa Peltonen – as well as IPAF’s Chair of Trustees Professor Yasir Suleiman, Prize Administrator Fleur Montanaro, and Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Professor Ahmed Zayed.
The shortlisted authors for IPAF’s 18th edition range in age from 38 to 58 and represent six countries: Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Mauritania, Syria, and UAE. Collectively the authors explore a diverse range of themes through distinct narrative styles and approaches to storytelling.
Four of the shortlisted authors – Ahmed Fal Al Din, Mohamed Samir Nada, Nadia Najar, and Haneen Al-Sayegh - are being recognised for the first time. Azher Jirjees was shortlisted for the Prize in 2023 with The Stone of Happiness after being longlisted in 2020; and Taissier Khalaf was longlisted in 2017 with The Slaughter of the Philosophers. Ahmed Fal Al Din is the first Mauritanian author to be shortlisted in the Prize’s history.
Mona Baker, Chair of the 2025 judges, said:
“This year’s six shortlisted novels are notable for their focus on the humanity of their protagonists, whether it be a Druze woman in a twenty-first century Lebanese village (The Women’s Charter), or the Islamic cleric Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad Al-Ghazali in the twelfth century (Danshmand). They depict human journeys, such as that of a young blind woman exploring her four senses in The Touch of Light, and the journey of the Andalusian Issa or Jesús searching for his mother’s killer in The Andalusian Messiah, blending reality and imagination, and mixing tragedy with comedy. In The Valley of the Butterflies, the main character uses sarcasm as a weapon to
confront tragic reality; while in The Prayer of Anxiety, the individual figures can also be viewed as political or social symbols, and the novel’s lifelike scenarios can be interpreted on many different levels.
“The judges’ main concern was not subject matter alone. The novel is first and foremost an artistic construction, and narrative representation and its forms are the novelist’s means of creating worlds that can only be achieved through imagination.”
Professor Yasir Suleiman, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said:
“This is a shortlist to savour and enjoy for its range of themes, stylistic artistry, diversity of voices and demographic spread. The anthropological framework in some of the novels takes the reader on journeys of discovery in which the narration strays onto less trodden pathways in Arab cultural life. Female characters and family dynamics feature prominently in some of the shortlisted works, revealing at times the slow and tortuous pace of social change. The effects of recent political calamities in the Arab world permeate some of the novels, revealing a dystopian world of loss, social disintegration and searing fears. There is no doubt that this shortlist will appeal to swathes of Arab readers and, when translated, to foreign readers who will find so much to marvel at. The appearance of four new writers on the list, including the first Mauritanian ever, will be a source
of pleasure to reading audiences.”
The winner of the 18th International Prize for Arabic Fiction will be announced on Thursday 24 April 2025 at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi that will also be streamed online.
The International Prize for Arabic Fiction is awarded for novels in Arabic and each of the six shortlisted finalists receives $10,000, with a further $50,000 going to the winner. It is sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.
The aim of IPAF is to reward excellence in contemporary Arabic creative writing and to encourage the readership of high-quality Arabic literature internationally through the translation and publication of winning and shortlisted novels in other major languages. Recent winning IPAF novels which have been published or are forthcoming in English include Mohammed Alnaas’s Bread on Uncle Milad’s Table (winner 2022, anticipated publication in 2026 from HarperVia) and A Mask, the Colour of the Sky (winner 2024, forthcoming from Europa Editions in 2026). A Mask, the Colour of the Sky has already been published in Italian (edizione/e) and Greek (Salto) and will be published in Portuguese and Spanish.

A CONVERSATION WITH DR. MAJEDAH BARRAK ALZANKI
Exploring the Advanced World of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Taiba Hospital
By bazaar Staff
When we think of radiology, our minds often wander to X-Rays or MRIs. We picture being asked to remove our jewelry, sitting very still, and hearing a cacophony of noises while a strange image is captured. However, the field of radiology has evolved dramatically, and it now serves as both a diagnostic tool and a means for non-surgical, safer interventions. At the forefront of this transformation is Dr. Majedah Barrak Alzanki, a consultant at Taiba Hospital specializing in musculoskeletal, spine intervention, and pain management.
Dr. Majedah’s journey into the world of radiology began with a spark of inspiration during her early career. “Diagnostic radiology is only a report with your image. Even though you help people by diagnosing diseases, you’re out of the scene,” she recalls. “When you contact patients and help them with minimal procedures using a small needle, the significant results and patient appreciation drives me.”
Her passion for pain management is evident in her approach to treating various conditions like disc pain, osteoarthritis, and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Majedah explains these complex issues with clarity: “Discs are normally found between your vertebral bodies to absorb pressure and your weight. When it’s dehydrated, it tears and bulges, compressing the sac containing nerve roots, causing pain.” She continues, “Osteoarthritis can be inflammatory or degenerative, sometimes caused by infection. Spondylolisthesis is the movement of vertebral bodies that results in nerve root compression.”
Dr. Majedah’s patients benefit from cuttingedge treatments such as nucleoplasty, disc fixing, and ozone therapy. “Nucleoplasty and disc fixing are two different tools used for disc degenerative changes. My experience allows me to choose the best approach for each patient’s condition,”
she says. “Intramuscular ozone has an excellent effect on sequestrated discs and decreases early degenerative changes with its antiseptic properties.”
One of the most fascinating advancements in her field is the use of radiofrequency ablation to treat benign bone tumors like osteoid osteoma. She explains, “Burning the nidus, the central activity of the tumor, can stop its growth. This is the main idea behind radiofrequency ablation.”
Dr. Majedah’s expertise extends beyond technical skills; her connection with patients is equally important. “When patients come to me, I smile and discuss any concerns they have. Listening to their stories, even those outside our field, makes patients trust and believe in the treatment,” she emphasizes. “Believe me, sometimes patients with mild disc degenerative
changes have severe pain, while those with significant changes have mild pain. This is what we call pain threshold, which differs from person to person and affects psychologically.”
The integration of diagnostic and therapeutic expertise has dramatically improved patient outcomes at Taiba Hospital. Dr. Majedah highlights, “When patients come to me, I can diagnose and treat them simultaneously, minimizing radiation exposure and reducing surgical scars and complications.”
As technology continues to evolve, Dr. Majedah looks forward to new advancements. “Radiofrequency ablation in different kinds excites me the most. I think in the future, we will have less radiation exposure with new machines like ultrasound with fusion imaging of CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy,” she shares enthusiastically.
For those dealing with chronic pain, Dr. Majedah offers valuable advice: “Psychologically prepare yourself for treatment, understand that results may not be immediate, and physiotherapy may be necessary to achieve the best results.”
Dr. Majedah Barrak Alzanki’s work at Taiba Hospital is not only revolutionizing the field of radiology but also significantly enhancing the quality of life for her patients. Her blend of technical expertise, compassionate care, and dedication to innovation makes her a true pioneer in the world of diagnostic and interventional radiology.

TOYOTA WINS AGAIN!
Toyota Dominates Dakar Rally with Double One-Two Victories
By bazaar Staff
The 2025 Dakar Rally witnessed an outstanding victory for Toyota, with Saudi Arabia’s Yazeed Al Rajhi and co-driver Timo Gottschalk clinching the win in their No. 201 Toyota GR DKR Hilux Evo. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings crossed the finish line just minutes later in their No. 211 Toyota GR DKR Hilux Evo, securing a remarkable one-two finish for Toyota.
Team Land Cruiser Toyota Auto Body (TLC) also secured their 12th consecutive Production Car (Stock) category victory at Dakar Rally. These impressive results are thanks to the performance of Akira Miura and co-driver Jean-Michel Polato, who claimed first place in their No. 500 Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport, with Ronald Basso and co-driver Jean-Pierre Garcin taking second in the No. 501 Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport. The victory also marks the Land Cruiser 300’s final participation year in the Dakar Rally, in the wake of vehicle regulation changes.
Akio Toyoda, TGR Chairman, also known as Morizo, commented: “Happy New Year to everyone who has finally reached the finish line of the Dakar Rally. Thank you very much for your hard work on the 7500km long, 15-day drive. To all those who challenged the Dakar Rally with hydrogenengine buggies: Last year you completed the rally by running 90% of the distance. This year you completed 100% of the roads and finished the Dakar in the truest sense of the word. I believe that you were able to show the evolution of the hydrogen engine to the world again this year. Let’s create a future together where everyone can be excited by the sound of engines. Thank you so much for another year of crazy challenges!”
The Dakar Rally, held in Saudi Arabia for the sixth consecutive year, began in the southwestern town of Bisha. The course was designed to wind through varying terrains such as the dunes of the Empty Quarter, craggy mountains, and wide plains, culminating at the goal in Shubaytah. For Saudi Arabia’s Al Rajhi, it was a dream come true to win the Dakar Rally on home soil.
Lategan and Cummings also fought bravely for the top spot throughout the rally, holding onto the lead for eight straight stages, before briefly relinquishing it to Al Rajhi for one stage.
The South African duo regained the lead on the next stage, but this put them at a disadvantage in terms of road position for the penultimate and deciding leg of the rally. In the end, they settled for second place, giving Toyota a coveted onetwo finish at the world’s toughest rally-raid event. This was a powerful performance by the brand, underscoring the quality, durability and reliability for which the Toyota Hilux is famous.
The No. 201 and No. 211 crews competed in the latest iteration of the race-proven Toyota GR DKR Hilux Evo. While staying true to its trusted core design, which has delivered multiple victories, the 2025 version features meticulous refinements that further enhance its quality, durability, and reliability—key values of Toyota’s approach. These upgrades reflect Toyota’s Kaizen philosophy of continuous improvement, with each iteration building on past successes to create a vehicle capable of conquering the toughest terrains.
Over the years, Toyota has been participating in many different forms of motorsports, including Formula One, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race. Toyota’s participation in these events was overseen by separate entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established TGR, to consolidate all of its motorsports activities under one in-house brand. Representing Toyota’s belief that ‘the roads build the people, and the people build the cars,’ TGR highlights the role of
motorsports as a fundamental pillar of Toyota’s commitment to making ‘ever-better’ cars. Harnessing years of experience gained under the extreme conditions of various motorsports events, TGR aims to forge new technologies and solutions that bring the freedom, adventure, and joy of driving to everyone.

THE SCIENCE OF COMFORT FOOD
Why We Crave What We Crave
By bazaar staff
There’s a reason we often turn to certain foods when life feels a little too overwhelming or when we simply need a taste of home. Comfort food—the mac and cheese, the hearty stews, the warm pies—holds a universal appeal, offering solace not only to the body but to the mind and spirit. But what’s happening in our brains and bodies that makes comfort food such a comforting choice? It’s a complex mix of psychology, nutrition, and nostalgia, all working together to satisfy both physical and emotional needs.
The Psychology of Comfort
The connection between food and emotions is deeply rooted in psychology. For many, comfort food is linked to positive memories—perhaps it’s a dish passed down through generations, or a meal shared with loved ones. When we eat these foods, we often feel a sense of connection, safety, and warmth. These memories are often tied to the food itself, with the taste and smell triggering the release of feel-good chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin.
Studies show that when we eat foods that remind us of childhood or happier times, it can activate areas of the brain associated with pleasure and reward. This is one reason why you might crave your grandmother’s mashed potatoes when you’re feeling down or stressed. These foods become emotional anchors, offering a sense of security during times of uncertainty.
The Comfort of Familiarity
Another reason we turn to comfort foods is their familiarity. Humans are creatures of habit, and familiarity often breeds a sense of safety and control. The predictability of comfort food—a warm bowl of pasta, a greasy burger—provides a sense of stability. In times of stress, the body craves homeostasis, and familiar foods can help restore a sense of balance.
The predictability of comfort food is also tied to its simplicity. These are the foods we’ve eaten countless times before, and their flavors, textures, and aromas are ingrained in our senses. This simplicity can be soothing when the world around us feels chaotic.
Nutrition and Satisfaction
There’s also a nutritional component to comfort food cravings. Many comfort foods are rich in carbohydrates, fats, and sugars—macronutrients that are associated with energy and pleasure. Carbohydrates, in particular, are known to increase serotonin levels in the brain, which can create feelings of calm and contentment. This is why we might instinctively reach for a bowl of pasta or a slice of pizza when we’re feeling down. These foods help satisfy the body’s need for quick energy while also providing a mood-boosting effect.
In addition to their comforting macronutrients, many comfort foods are high in calories, which can trigger the brain’s reward system. When we consume high-calorie foods, our brain interprets this as a positive reinforcement, encouraging us to reach for those foods again in the future. This can create a cycle where we crave these calorie-dense foods when seeking emotional comfort.
Nostalgia: A Time Machine in Every Bite
Nostalgia plays a powerful role in our attachment to comfort food. Food is inherently tied to culture, family traditions, and milestones in our lives. The taste of a dish can instantly transport us to a different time and place. Perhaps a bowl of ramen reminds you of family dinners during your childhood, or a piece of apple pie takes you back to a cozy autumn afternoon spent with friends.
These nostalgic associations often make comfort foods feel like more than just meals—they become a bridge to the past, a way to relive those moments of joy and security. The ability of food to evoke such vivid memories makes it an integral part of how we seek emotional well-being.
The Global Influence of Comfort Foods
Though comfort food may vary from culture to culture, the underlying psychology remains the same. Whether it’s a steaming bowl of Korean bibimbap, Italian lasagna, or a traditional Kuwaiti machboos, the
appeal of comfort food is universal. In every culture, there are dishes that provide not just sustenance but emotional nourishment. The love and care that go into preparing these dishes create a sense of belonging and continuity, linking us to our roots, our families, and our histories.
A Balanced Approach
While comfort food can serve as an emotional and nutritional reprieve, it’s important to strike a balance. Understanding the science behind our cravings can help us make more mindful choices, allowing us to enjoy the comfort of food while nurturing our physical and emotional well-being.
Next time you find yourself reaching for that bowl of mac and cheese or a slice of cake, take a moment to savor the experience—not just for the taste, but for the memories, the emotions, and the science that make comfort food so irresistible.
