About the cover: Noor Hellewa first fell in love with the iPhone 4s’s camera and has been experimenting with iPhone photography ever since! She keeps discovering new tricks to make her photos stand out, and believes that you don’t need expensive equipment to become a good photographer, all you need is talent, passion and practice. Utilizing channels like Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, she honed her skills further and today her talent extends to landscape, urban, portrait, nature, fashion and food photography. Using an iPhone 8 Plus, our cover photo was captured after a stormy, rainy night. Noor thinks that rain gives every photographer special sights to behold. This led her to Kuwait Towers. “I decided to take a walk searching for any rainwater lakes around to capture a good reflection photo. The water was clear and just like a mirror, with leaves perfectly placed so I took the shot and I named it ‘Kuwait after the storm.’”

December 2018 | Issue # 232 www.bazaar.town

No, I’m not going to write about the recent rain and what it did to the country, especially the roads, although I’d love to. I’m not going to write about what happened to some of the new suburbs, and the poor residents there who woke up to find themselves overlooking lakes, but not the kind you can swim in. And finally, I’m not going to write about the many days of no work, no school, and no university classes. Instead, let’s think happy thoughts, and write about happy things like the amount of money windshield repair shops must have made over the last couple of weeks, and the amount of money water pump suppliers must have made too (kidding!). Enough of the bah humbug and let’s get into the spirit of Ho Ho Ho!

The bazaar team...

At least we know photographers had fun because of the rain. So many creative people took to the streets of Kuwait to capture the country through the rain and the wet reflections. Just take a look at our cover this month by Noor Hellewa.

Yasmine El Charif

This issue is all about the fun you can have for the holiday season. We dined at the aesthetically simple yet delicious Peko Peko. The dishes are complex, rich and were a feast for our eyes and bellies. We also tried the Theater by Rhodes experience. If fine dining and movie-going had a baby this would be it. Gourmet food, comfortable leather seats that just pull you in and blockbuster movies, it’s everything we never knew we wanted all together. And lest you think we only opted for the indoors last month, we braved the roads to try out the new Ferrari 488 GTB for you. It’s a car built for speed, long distances and screams luxury in all of its beautiful details. We want one and we want longer road trips to go with it. But if staying in is all what you’re about this month, check out our selections from H&M’s Home Holiday collection for cozy, festive options to make your next event an unforgettable one. If you already made plans for New Year’s Eve, you might want to cancel them because the Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya told us what they have in store for the festive season and it’s just exquisite. Be it dinner, brunch or a spa treatment make your reservation now—and guess what, you can win spectacular prizes too! The Kidzania Winter Candy Land festival and The Promenade’s Ice Camps are on our list of places to get all the fun of an extreme winter without any of the pain for the little ones too. We won’t remind you that January is just around the corner and that now is a good time to make new resolutions. But we do think that if you focus on one thing only in 2019 let it be your finances. Get in on the latest WISE platform from Gulf Bank to grow your capital and make sure you have more money to enjoy the year. Besides all of the things to do around Kuwait this December, we can’t forget the awesome people we met along the way. From the inspiring architectural duo behind local award winning firm Studio Toggle, to the up and coming designer Jana Yatim to the fun foodie Talabat Ambassadors, we introduce you to the creatives and the movers and shakers of Kuwait. All of us at bazaar wish all of you a very merry Christmas and happy holidays! Ahmed El-Adly

PERCEPTION IS REALITY: THE PERFECT STORM

The disparity between the actual versus the perceived threat from the weather By Bassam Shuhaibar Ph.D

It happens all the time. You’re checking your smartphone or surfing the web and a breaking news alert pops up in your notifications bar, virtually yelling at you to pay attention. A natural disaster has stricken somewhere, an environmental catastrophe is imminent, there is a leak of some kind and unless something is done yesterday, the damage will be irreversible. This will all be an abstract notion to the vast majority of people who live nowhere near the vicinity of the incident, yet will directly affect the denizens who do. When this is the only source of information available to those unfortunate enough to experience such tragic circumstances, the providers are tasked with an important moral responsibility: to communicate the facts as succinctly and accurately as possible. Unfortunately, the never-ending quest for higher ratings and website traffic means that, in most cases, sensationalism and hyperbole will prevail. As such, people have been conditioned to accept the risks as described, even though reality would paint a different picture than the one portrayed. This only adds fuel to the fire of a debate in which scientists are constantly involved with the public at large: when it comes to risk, what is the disparity between the actual threats versus the way they are perceived? This topic always brings to mind the revolutionary sci-fi movie The Matrix, where the world is depicted to be the virtual product of a computer program to which the human population is oblivious. There is one specific scene where Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) is discussing this concept with Neo (Keanu Reeves) and asks him to choose between a red or blue pill. Of these, the former would reveal the “reality” to Neo whereas the latter would ensure his ignorance of the situation remains intact. Neo ends up choosing the red one and ultimately goes on to fulfil his destiny in his “awakened” state. This is precisely how the argument between actual versus perceived risk should be framed. One of the most recent (and closest-to-home) examples that comes to mind took place towards the end of the 2018 Spring semester at one of the local private schools. There had recently been a severe sandstorm which lasted a couple of days, resulting in reduced outdoors activities and health advisory warnings for those susceptible to respiratory illnesses. Many parents chose to keep their children home until the worst had passed, after which school activities resumed as normal. However, the parents were greeted the next morning by e-mail messages urgently requesting 28

their elementary school-aged children be pickedup and taken home. The administration had just received the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) forecast and the numbers were far from encouraging, prompting them to make an executive decision knowing all too well what the ramifications would be. As expected, there was the mandatory level of chaos such an exercise would generate. Parents had to rearrange their schedules or take time off work to accommodate this request. That being said, the one thing that had made the situation so much worse in their eyes was how absolutely perfect the weather appeared that day: sunny skies, scattered clouds, and not a speck of dust in sight. It seemed implausible that poor air quality was the impetus behind such a logistical nightmare, and the complaints came in like a mudslide. “What is the AQI anyway?” would be a very fair question to ask at this juncture. It is a number developed from measuring several different air pollutants, which is associated with a colorcode. The value and its respective color help governments communicate the degree of air pollution to the public and, in turn, its associated severity: the higher the number, the higher the percentage of the population who are likely to suffer adverse health effects due to poor air quality.

One of these pollutants is called PM, or “particulate matter.” This can be likened to soot or fine dust. PM comes in many different sizes (denoted by a number written after “PM”), but the ones focused on the most are PM10 and PM2.5, given they are able to enter our bodies through inhalation and provoke health-related issues. As PM2.5 is the smaller of the two, its presence can affect our bodies in the worst way due to its propensity to bypass the natural defense barriers of both the nose and lungs. However, the “2.5” in this case denotes a size of 2.5 micrometers or less. To put that into perspective, a human hair is about 100 micrometers thick, implying that these particles cannot be seen with the naked eye. In fact, they cannot be observed except with the aid of an electron microscope. The example above is one of a plethora. How do you ensure that the foundation upon which you are basing your perspective is sound? Easy. Take the red pill.

TAVIS TALKS

A Writer opens up about his debut novel

By Nejoud Al Yagout

When Tavis Stewart speaks of his debut novel, Ibbie’s Fashion Adventures: Around the World to Catch a Thief, he gives much of the credit to his wife, Asil Attar, the CEO of Alyasra Fashion in Kuwait. Throughout most of the entire conversation, he speaks of her achievements, how she has inspired the protagonist, and how her background has literally shaped his imagination. With Stewart, his wife is not behind him, but walking alongside him, a partner on his journey, whom he reveres. Here, he answers more focused questions regarding the book. You say it is essential for books classified as Young Adult to convey messages. How are you seeking to inspire the youth in this series? My own daughter Bryony has been an avid reader from a young age. As she grew into her teens it became more difficult to find books that had a positive and social message. That's when I started to write this first book of the Ibbie series for teenagers, to bring that sense of real adventure and multi-cultural friendships, along with a way to open their eyes to the social issues that face their peers in other countries around the world. My daughter is no longer a teen, but she was the first one to get this book and is loving reading it now. A twist in the story involves fighting for justice. So, in essence, you bridge the divide between fashion and humanitarianism. Was that difficult in a world that places us into boxes, that encourages us to stick to our passions without venturing outside our respective fields? Alhamdulallah, it wasn't difficult for me because my wife ‘is’ the example of how to bridge those two worlds. We both have a focus on social responsibility as part of our work and our lives, which has brought us into personal contact with all the characters in this book. For me, I was influenced by Anita Roddick, the late founder of The Body Shop in England with whom I worked in the 1990's. She forced all of us to venture far outside our respective fields and explore new personal horizons which has influenced me for the last 20 years. It must be easy to have a muse for a wife! Ibbie is loosely based on your spouse, Asil. And though they both share a love of fashion, how similar are they in terms of mannerisms and personality? As I didn’t know her when she was coming into her teens, I have used my imagination based on how she is now. We are both great believers in never growing up, so I still see the rather clever opinionated little girl in her every day. The 30

main characteristic used that she has always displayed, is her caring nature and this is the essence of Ibbie. She may always want to do things her way, but she always makes sure that nobody gets hurt. This is the first book of a series. Will each of the books be a standalone or will you have to read them in an order to understand each story? Inshallah, there will be five books in the series, and each one can be read as a unique story. However, Ibbie will get older in each book, so reading them as part of a series will help the reader to understand her experiences as she grows from a girl into a young lady. Please don’t ask me how I’m going to portray that, I guess I will be using the experiences of my wife and daughter a lot.

And, finally, the protagonist is an Arab and a Muslim, like your wife. Was it easy to write a book about a character from a different culture? My wife and I have been together for fourteen years and Alhamdulallah I myself converted to Islam before that, so that side of the relationships between the cultures in the family has been taken from personal experience. This was one of the reasons for writing the books, as I wanted to convey the message to anyone who reads them that what’s important in life is your faith and your family, and lots of adventures! You can order a copy of Tavis Stewarts' novel Ibbie's Fashion Adventures: Around the World to Catch a Thief on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Ibbies-FashionAdventures-Around-World/dp/1911589946.

ART, ADVERTISING AND APPRECIATION Art isn’t just limited to paintings and the work of the Masters By bazaar staff

Nowadays, there’s no escaping advertising. It’s on billboards, TV, social media and even on buses. It has become so ubiquitous that we try to ignore it; we skip the ads on YouTube, block them on our browser and flip the channel when we see them on TV. And while it’s just business and a profit generating industry, advertising is still its own art form. This is why beautifully executed ads have an impact on the general public. Which is why sometimes, some ads— the ones that are really stunning, truly affect us just like a stunning work of art would, proving that we still need artists behind the steering wheel of the advertising bus. When you’re born into a family that appreciates and practices art, it’s inevitable that you, in turn, would become an artist. We talked to Maheendran, better known as Mahi, who is a local Creative Director who grew up watching his father and his older brother working using their imagination and creating art. As a young child he doodled, drew, painted, and had no doubt in his mind that studying Fine Art was what he wanted to do. Upon graduating, he landed his first job in the advertising field as a junior visualizer. He crafted advertising and branding campaigns for some of the best known local and global brands in Asia and the Middle East for print, video and digital platforms. The visuals are a tool, a method of communication and at the end of the day, still art. This was almost two decades ago, when things were still done the hard way. There is a large portion of art that is mental, but it used to involve a lot of manual work. Today, everything is computerized and digitized; you can shoot an entire video commercial on a smart phone in a matter of hours, edit it, and have it ready for sharing with the public. For artists, it’s hard to cross the line from independent art and into the business of advertising. This is what some hard-core starving artists call selling out. Maheendran disagrees; art is art, and it is at its essence, “making things better.” He thinks that people usually think of classical paintings when they think of art. That can sometimes be a barrier. According to him, everything is art. If you want to paint, which he loves doing, you need to find a space, take out your colors, mix paint, etc, before you even get started. But you can also be in a meeting, and with your pen and a piece of paper start doodling. It is still art. It is also a more intimate, private and perhaps raw form of art. It can be less intentional but more personal. He likened it to walking into a forest you’ve never been in before, you don’t know where you are 32

going but you are sure that it will be beautiful. His unconstrained take on art has given him more freedom to create more work. Maheendran has been recently doing more illustrations and going back to his roots as an artist, not just as a professional in the business. This outlook makes advertising more accessible to all of us. When Maheendran first came to Kuwait he wanted to meet more artists and join the local scene and community. That never happened at the time. Things have changed, and the art scene is very vibrant today. Studios, galleries and even art supply stores have multiplied in number. He is excited about the

increase in artists. As a father of two young children, he appreciates the ability to have a studio outside of the home. As a parent he also thinks you can’t teach art to young children. Instead, they should be given the tools and left to explore on their own so they can define their own way. And that applies to adults too, just pick up a pen and start doodling.

JANA YATIM

Taking on the fashion world, one fierce collection at a time By bazaar staff

She may have just graduated from Lebanon’s ESMOD, École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode, or Higher School for Fashion Arts and Techniques for those of us who dozed off during Middle School French. But Jana, in her early twenties, is ready to take on the fashion world. Jana grew up in Kuwait, left for Lebanon for her education but she’s back. As a child she was never really the bookish type, and preferred art and doodling to math and physics. All of that extra practice led her to a career in the fashion world. She’s also a certified visual merchandiser, creating a theme in a shop window to entice customers to come in. Which mirrors her fashion design, using her garments as a collection to tell a story. Jana’s education and training has given her the tools and skills to create beautiful garments, but her imagination and passion have given her the vehicle to transform them into a beautifully spun tale. Her debut collection is about cancer, specifically metastasis, a secondary malignant growth. Undoubtedly, a morbid topic that most would shy away from. Nevertheless, it is something that is relatable to many of us. We have all lost someone or seen someone suffer from a disease that plagues mankind. Her mentor thought it was too depressing and clearly told her not to talk about it. Undeterred, Jana was set on pursuing the topic. Instead of outright mentioning cancer, she translated it into volume, beautiful deformations and transparencies, and titled the collection “Metamorphosis”. Using sheer and opaque fabrics, boning and smart construction, she created twelve different pieces that come together as four full outfits. The color palette is pale and neutral. With crisp whites, muted golds and greys that one would assume end up looking subdued. But it is anything but dull. Billowing chiffons, voluminous sleeves, fitted bodices are all carefully juxtaposed to give structure to an otherwise drapey material. The message is powerful and striking. She describes her eponymous brand as “exposing the form of an abstract idea from a philosophical point of view and translating it into a tangible product. [Simply put] developing fictional visualizations from a young thought into a speculative end”. It doesn’t matter if you understand fashion or philosophy but looking at this young designer’s work you understand that there is an underlying significance to it. And while she knows that her aesthetic is not set in stone and will mature, grow and evolve over time, we are sure that she has the drive and passion to surprise and fascinate us in the future. 34

THE ART OF TRANSLATION

How Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail is adapting the hit podcast Homecoming into an utterly original TV series By KC Ifeanyi

"I'm controlling over anything I create," says Sam Esmail. "I'm very precious about it." The writer, director, and showrunner is used to constructing worlds purely of his own design, most successfully with his Golden Globe and Peabody Awardwinning USA Network series, Mr. Robot, a dizzying descent into the mind of a brilliant, paranoid hacker. Esmail's latest project—the 10-episode Homecoming— is a psychological thriller that landed on Amazon in early November and stars Julia Roberts in her television debut. It also marks the first time he has directed someone else's material, and a podcast no less. Translating an audio-driven narrative for the screen inspired Esmail to loosen his notoriously tight grip on creative control, while maintaining a firm grasp of his own vision. Here's how he found the right balance. State your mission Before agreeing to take on any project, Esmail asks himself whether the story is entertaining and challenges his point of view. "The experience you're going to take the audience on is as important as the story you're trying to tell," he says. "And that experience needs to excite me so much that I am desperate to share it." When his agent approached him about turning Homecoming into a TV series, Esmail initially refused: He saw no reason to mess with something that worked so well in its original format. It was only when he listened to the podcast again that he found his mission: to use the camera to heighten the suspense and tension already present in the narrative. "I started to realize that there is another dimension to the story that we could do interesting things with, visually," he says. Find your method To give Homecoming a fresh identity, Esmail leaned into the essential difference between radio and TV by showing more and telling less. The podcast had to rely on expository dialogue and speeches to move the plot along, which "killed the drama, suspense, and tension" of certain moments, Esmail says. For television, though, he used near-wordless scenes to propel the story, letting the audience experience the 36

mystery right alongside the main characters. He also used cinematography to his advantage. To adapt a moment that, in the podcast, involved two characters simply talking about the place where they worked, Esmail moved his camera around in a long, sweeping take, "allowing the audience to peek in on the facility while eavesdropping on the conversation," he says. "It [was] a great way to rhyme visuals with dialogue and expand the experience for the viewer." Watch your tone For Esmail, using plot and imagery to strike the right mood is the hardest part of the creative process. He says the more experimental and abstract qualities of Mr. Robot were somewhat buried in the show's first season. Eventually, they blossomed into the format-breaking episodes of seasons 2 and 3, which feature dream sequences and fragmented narratives. Esmail admits being tempted to sneak things from that world into Homecoming, given the shows' similarities. "But we always stopped ourselves and challenged ourselves to say,

Wait a minute: How does it work in this show?" For Homecoming, Esmail says he leaned heavily on the more technical aspects of filmmaking, like framing, camera movement, and lighting, to "add that layer of specificity that gives the show its unique vibe." The result: a modern version of Hitchcock at his best. Let it go Esmail is cautious about micromanaging his crew—a situation he avoided by bringing his entire Mr. Robot staff from New York City to Los Angeles to work on Homecoming. "You have to have that core creative team around you who's going to support your vision, and challenge and evolve it," he says. He similarly deferred to the expertise of Homecoming podcast creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who serve as showrunners for the TV series. "I was [never] going to take over writing duties," he says. "I was a genuine fan of the original podcast, and I had the two masters of [it] with me. It would have been stupid for me to push back, or ignore that."

CELEBRATING TANGLE TEEZER’S NEW THE WET DETANGLER Don’t miss beautique cosmetics intl. at The Avenues for Tangle Teezer offers!

by bazaar staff

beautique cosmetics international celebrated the launch of the newest Tangle Teezer, The Wet Detangler, today an absolute game-changer in hair brushing. This design is the newest release from the British brand that is designed & manufactured in Great Britain. It has been over a decade since the founder Shaun P had his first ‘lightbulb’ moment when he realized the root cause of all hair woes and figured out just how to solve it by creating brushes designed to detangle hair of all types, greatly reducing breakage and creating unbeatable smoothness. It began with the beloved Original, then came the travel sized compact to meet the needs of every fashion-goer as well as children as the designs see collaborations with the likes of Lulu Guinness, Markus Lupfer, Skinny Dip, Hello Kitty, even Star Wars & Disney. There is also the permanent staple in the Compact Range, The Male Groomer, a bullet shade of grey that every guy who discovers it loves! Tangle Teezer also released a special design specifically for much thicker hair as well as those with luscious curls called the Thick & Curly! Then came the blowstyling tools that allow for the fastest drying time & the least amount of pulling & tugging needed to achieve a desired hairstyle. The Ultimate Brush 38

that was released in the main two colors, Barbie pink and neutral black, has made brushing hair with extensions an absolute breeze and works on all hair types as the “ultimate” finishing tool. The Back-Combing brush was the best thing about 2017, as the brush we didn’t know we needed brought magic into our lives with its ability to allow poofing and puffing and ever so high levels of volume to be back-combed into hair and just as easily brushed out. The brush has a tip that makes it perfect for separating sections which makes it multifunctional too! Shaun has been continuously pushing the boundaries of what a hairbrush can do to one's life, with just one step in one’s hair routine missing, which led to… The Wet Detangler. The Wet Detangler can be used on wet or dry hair, the innovative distribution of the teeth allow for the smoothest in wet hair detangling. It can also be used to brush the scalp which is now trending as the science proves that giving ones scalp a good exfoliation allows proper ridding of built up residue from grease, styling products and pollution which will in turn stimulate new hair growth and give an unbeatable squeaky clean feel. Another fantastic use of The Wet Detangler is to distribute conditioner, masks & even treatment oils evenly throughout the hair. Easily cleaned, this brush is a shower staple at home, at the gym, whilst traveling. Luckily for us, it comes in an assortment of colors to keep them color-coded for each use!

As part of The Wet Detangler’s release, beautique cosmetics intl. participated at the Kuwait International Fairground exhibition in Mishref in collaboration with Hessa Al-Loughani. The event saw new fans of Tangle Teezer emerge as they discovered the number one hairbrush brand for the first time whilst many had been devoted to the UK founded and produced brush from years back. The eleven-day event was a major success that beautique cosmetics intl. has decided to join next year too! beautique cosmetics intl will be at The Avenues Mall Phase IV, from the 6th till 8th of December so make sure to visit the booth for the special promotions that will be offered in order for the masses to discover this iconic brand Tangle Teezer which is the ultimate gift for the hair that just keeps on giving!

DOTS RM X CARRIAGE

On tactful marketing strategies and Kuwait’s F&B industry By bazaar staff

With Kuwait’s flourishing food and beverage industry, finding the right partner to help spread the word about your unique concept can be hard work. First of all, food, as an industry, is quite the personal field to tackle from a messaging perspective. Everyone’s taste is different, and marketing your product or service to your target customer can lead you to enter into a world of trials and tribulations in what is considered to be an already fiercely competitive market. This is where the experts at Dots RM come into play. Dots RM (Research & Marketing) is a marketing company which specializes in unique activations in the food and beverage industry. Based in Kuwait and with more than 20 years’ experience between the young team, their vibrant ideas and connection to the market have allowed them to create an extensive portfolio of work since they launched in 2017. With an impressive client list of the top restaurants and chefs in the market, they have also initiated projects in the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Their recent work with prominent delivery platform Carriage is most illustrative of what Dots RM can do to make your concept stand out from the crowd. They were approached by Carriage back in August 2018 to create the new opening screen for the most fastest, most popular delivery application in Kuwait. Managing Director of Dots RM, Lucy Moore, conceptualized the project for Carriage; a homegrown concept that launched delivering a select number of high end eateries. The challenge of this project was to represent the new verticals of the platform; Carriage no longer only delivers food but also flowers, cosmetics & perfumes, groceries, pharmaceuticals, health supplements, and most recently pet supplies and electronics. These needed to be presented in a way that was in line with the light, fun brand attributes of Carriage yet also not tie them to vendor favoritism. When it came to visualizing this project, Lucy Moore, Managing Director at Dots RM, envisioned an opening page that captured the essence of the delivery platform on every level; incorporating their signature red-orange hue with a clean finish while adding a touch of lightness through illustration, something that Carriage has utilized since its early days. She worked primarily with her in-house team at Dots RM, and Lucy appointed Averil Dias as Head 40

of Photography for the shoot with Nikhil Rodrigues as her Assistant Photographer and set design managed by Mahmoud Abdullah. For the retouching, Bahrain based expert Sergio Miranda joined the project with the final illustration touches by Hanzada Kurdi, the newest Dots RM team member. Launched on Android on November 4th and IOS the following week, this project is the latest yet most public collaboration between Dots RM and Carriage. At Dots RM, the entire team is creatively inclined. Lucy Moore joined Dots RM as the Managing Director in summer 2017. Having previously held the position of Managing Editor of Khaleejesque Magazine, she moved to pursue a career in her lifelong passion of food. As a creative strategist, she has combined her knowledge of the market and culinary flair to build the company, along with Founder Yousef Al-Wazzan, with a curated number of clients presenting unique ideas into the market. Photographer Averil Dias is one of Dots RM leading in-house talents. Having started food photography as far back as 2014, she is continually growing her knowledge of photography, editing, and content creation. Averil has headed numerous shoots for Dots RM clients and is moving more into videography and design application as well. Assistant Photographer Nikhil Rodrigues has been part of the Dots RM team since day one. As a central member of the production team, his skill set

covers photography, editing, videography, and collage. An active person by nature with an affinity for the outdoors, much of his work reflects his charisma and fun loving nature. 27-year-old Mahmoud Abdullah makes all of Dot RM’s incredible set visions come to life. As the projects' Set Designer, Mahmoud is a self-taught graphic designer and believes that designing is an exciting, long life learning experience. His dream in the future is to run a creative hub for young Egyptians in order for them to utilize their talents and skills, developing creative projects that will have a positive impact on Egyptian society. Sergio Miranda is a renowned fashion and advertising photographer in the Gulf, having worked with the biggest names across industries, he feels most at home behind the camera. Hailing from Argentina and now based in Bahrain, Sergio is continuously studying and researching new techniques, technologies, and ideas to add creativity to every step of production. As for Dots RM’s newest family member, the creative Hanzada Kurdi has been drawing ever since she could pick up a pencil and is currently at Kuwait University studying graphic design. Already showing great promise, her simple sketch style adds character to her work. For more on Dots RM, please visit www.dotsRM. com and check out @dotsrm on Instagram.

THREE WAYS STAN LEE HELPED CREATE THE MODERN SUPERHERO MOVIE The legendary creative’s legacy has reshaped the entire film industry By Josh Rottenberg and Ryan Faughnder

By the time the Marvel Cinematic Universe experienced its Big Bang with the 2008 smash Iron Man, Stan Lee had long since retired from official duties at Marvel, settling into a role as a revered spiritual grandfather to the comic book world, as close to a flesh-and-blood superhero as fans could hope to get. But though Lee was no longer actively involved in steering the panoply of characters he had helped create, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, Black Panther, Thor and the Fantastic Four, his legacy as a key architect of what would quickly become Hollywood’s dominant genre was already firmly established. In the decade since Iron Man, Marvel Studios movies, most of which feature Lee’s cocreations, have collectively grossed more than $17 billion worldwide for the Walt Disney Co. — and that’s not counting the additional billions brought in over the years by the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises at Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox, respectively. Here are three ways Lee helped write the playbook for the modern superhero movie — and, by extension, reshaped the film industry as a whole. HE MADE SUPERHEROES RELATABLE Until Lee came along, superheroes had generally been much more like Olympian deities than regular people with regular-human problems. But, starting in the 1960s with Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and the Hulk, Lee and co-creator Jack Kirby saw a way to draw in fans with characters who, for all their powers, were plagued by the same flaws, neuroses, relationship issues and everyday headaches that beset all of us. As Lee told The Times in 1984, “I thought, suppose there was a guy, Peter Parker, who’s also Spider-Man and he can stick to walls, and spin a web, and has the strength of 12 men. We said just because he can do that doesn’t mean everything would be perfect in his life. We created the first superheroes who weren’t perfect, who worried about paying rent. It was satire — fantasy in a realistic setting.” Lee’s superheroes lived in the same world as the rest of us, complete with all of its social ills, and their foibles made it that much easier for fans to connect to them. That more naturalistic approach to character — and the wryly comic sensibility Lee brought to it — has continued to shape not only Marvel’s films but also franchises like “The Incredibles.” And even, it could be argued, comedies that have

42

nothing to do with capes or spandex. As Seth Rogen wrote on Twitter, “Thank you Stan Lee for making people who feel different realize they are special.” HE PERFECTED THE CONCEPT OF THE SHARED UNIVERSE Lee didn’t single-handedly create the concept of different characters inhabiting the same world; Disney had its own shared animated Mickey Mouse universe dating to the 1920s, while Universal Studios monsters like Frankenstein and the Wolf Man would periodically pop up in one another’s films. But before Lee came along, comic book characters had, for the most part, been isolated in their own narratives (with the notable exception of DC Comics’ Justice League series uniting Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and other heroes for a specific set of stories). Having established that Marvel’s superheroes primarily lived in our world — many of them in Lee’s native New York — it only made sense to Lee that they would sometimes bump into each other around the neighborhood. Under his stewardship, Marvel created a sprawling set of interconnected narratives in which one character’s storyline could impact another’s and superheroes could team up to fight a common enemy — or, just as often, squabble with one another. Mary Ann Halford, a New York-based media and entertainment strategist at OC&C Consulting, said Lee’s ability to build out

an overlapping tapestry of stories with the comics laid the groundwork for Marvel Studios’ successful run of films. That business model has become the driving force of not only the box office but the small screen as well and has been copied, with varying degrees of success, by other studios — most notably, Warner Bros. with its DC Comics films. HE WAS A MASTER OF FAN CONNECTION No one worked more tirelessly to cultivate fans than Lee, who was as brilliant at marketing and promotion as he was at creating indelible characters. Under Lee’s leadership, Marvel Comics readers became intimately familiar with the company’s artists and writers, and throughout the ’60s, Lee wrote a monthly column called “Stan’s Soapbox,” which he’d often sign with his personal motto, “Excelsior!” By the time Hollywood started cranking out films based on Marvel characters, comic book fans felt so connected to Lee that he became living, breathing symbol of fandom itself. Lee would go on to make cameo appearances in dozens of films (he will be seen this month, in animated form, in Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet”) and showed up at countless fan conventions like Comic-Con, treating fans like friends he just hadn’t met yet. To this day, Lee’s talent for nurturing Marvel’s fan base has become a model for every studio marketing department when it comes to managing their own franchises, superhero or otherwise.

STUDIO TOGGLE WHEN ARCHITECTURE, URBANISM AND ACTIVISM EFFORTLESSLY INTERSECT When it comes to the modern public discourse about architecture, we seldom find the discussion to be geared towards the actual public. We’ve become so conditioned to think that what is beautiful is considered to be well designed. Accent lights, marble-effect details, and industrial ceilings; sure, these are all are beautiful design elements, and will make for Instagramworthy moments, but how would these affect your immediate local environment? Can design take away from the public’s ability to interact with the space? Can it add value to the community? 44

These are the kinds of questions that Studio Toggle founders and Architects Hend Almatrouk and Gijo Paul George are not afraid to ask. “It’s easy to look at a structure and deem its design to be ‘pretty’, but what if it sticks out like a sore thumb on the street? What if it is so pretty but offers no parking for its inhabitants, and no shared spaces? Where is the public benefit in that?” Gijo starts us off. Established in 2012 by Hend and Gijo, both graduates of Universität für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, Studio Toggle was established with logical design in mind and problem-solving techniques sustaining their vision. It doesn’t matter how complicated the problem may seem, or how big or small a given space is, they believe that the solution lies within the original design of any given project. They bridge the gap between architecture and urban design, creating spaces that are accessible as much as they are beautiful. Studio Toggle’s expertise extends to public sector, commercial, residential and hospitality architecture to interior design. With offices in both Kuwait City and Porto, Portugal, the team has designed, supervised and handed over many projects including private villas, apartment buildings, pavilions and retail interiors, all in the short five years of being operational. The partners first met while interning, a while before establishing Studio Toggle, and with Hend’s specialization in experimental architecture and Gijo’s focus on public urban planning, the duo work well together. Their ideas meld seamlessly, each bringing their own talents to the table. Gijo explains, “I call it more than the sum of parts—whatever I did individually isn’t as great as when I did it with Hend.” They have a clear vision for changing perspectives on design, and they take the time to understand their clients’ needs, while also cultivating ideas about designing functional spaces that still adhere to a positive public policy. “A building’s interface with the street is as important as the inside design of the building,” says Gijo. Everyone deserves his or her own outdoor space, no matter how small. When the person’s quality of life is taken into consideration, the result is a far cry from the virtually windowless matchbox-style apartment blocks that are haphazardly appearing throughout Kuwait. “It’s these little tweaks that make a difference to the quality of life.” Hend says, “People are sometimes genuinely surprised by our recommendations, but we need to make spaces more accessible, commercial or residential.” Gijo illustrates Hend’s point further when he showed us a sample design that Studio Toggle was recently pitching. A simple, elegant and beautiful housing development is complete with pedestrian space, shared areas, ample car parking, shared rooftop green areas, private courtyards—and what was surprising is the size. It wasn’t a huge development but

worked perfectly for small families and young professionals alike. “That’s the thing.” He says, “With these elements in place, the inhabitants would feel invested in taking care of the building themselves. They can sit down on a communal bench and catch up, they can utilize the open spaces—they shouldn’t be stuck in their homes the entire time. If you take care of the space, the entire streetscape will improve. We’re trying to plant seeds through design everywhere. Even if we call this [their vision] a failed experiment, at least we tried.” While he says this jokingly, Gijo’s right. Designing with the public space in mind fosters a sense of community; people get to know each other during the process, and this creates a sense of belonging in the community that we tend to forget about. How many times have you rushed past your neighbor on your way home,

loudly mouthing a complaint about something without stopping to ask them about their day? He drives this point home further, explaining that “you [developers] don’t have to pay for these extras, all it needs is intent, skill and planning.” The public discourse on urban planning can be a tricky one, especially in light of recent events when Kuwait’s experience of extreme flooding warranted a major upheaval on how our planning policies are shaped. Changing mentalities when it comes to the public and private function of design is a tricky path to navigate, because at the end of the day, this is an experiential process. “Everyone has to participate in this discourse,” says Hend, “this extends to the public and policy makers alike. We believe that we can establish this through positive design that is both beautiful and impactful. When you’re thinking from the outside in and the opposite, you’re not adding [Continued...]

45

an expense to the design process. Good design brings solutions to everything and everyone involved.” Sure, this can be an uphill battle at times for the team, but Hend clarifies that “the argument from us is that this will benefit the investor/ owner of a given structure in the long run. People are willing to pay a difference for a better quality of life.” “There is always a sense of shared trust between us and the client—they want us to do their project or development because they believe in the work that we do. We have objectives that we have to meet, and it’s great to have clients who listen to us, and take our views seriously. When we talk about the experience, how unique it is, and how the inhabitants' needs are going to be met, the clients listen. We’re adding value to their investment, at the end of the day.” Hend says, “Studio Toggle visualizes solutions, we have a huge responsibility and a role,” she continues laughingly, “But, we’re often told we’re not good business people because of our vision. Sure, I don’t want to die poor, but I want to stand for the right things.” And this vision pays off in the form of their incredible community collaborations and awardwinning projects. Studio Toggle's sense of activism towards positive design has led them to collaborate with organizations like Nuqat for their previous Luminous Drapes pavilion at JACC and En.V at the Awaken Festival at DAI’s Al Yarmouk Cultural Center, and gain various accolades and awards for their work. Most recently, they’ve merited the Boutique Firm of the Year award at the 2018 Architect Awards, including the Middle East Architect Residential Project of the Year 2016 for its project F.LOT, as well as the prestigious Cityscape Award 2017 for its residential building ‘The Edges’ in Salmiya, amongst many others. Head to Argan Square in Salmiya and check out design award winning chocolatier Bean2Bar—the space isn’t huge, but its design is bespoke. Bright and airy, the design boasts plenty of storage space and flexibility to showcase the amazing offerings of the shop. Studio Toggle’s work is further featured regularly in prestigious architectural magazines like Dezeen, Archdaily, Dwell, and Divisare. “What we call ourselves,” says Gijo, “as architects, urbanists and activists, may come across as a drop in the ocean, but we will still insist that our projects integrate with the environment, and improve the space and not take away from it. We are rooted in function, responsible, ethical architecture.” There are many offices that share in Studio Toggle’s sentiment, and the team hopes to continue to openly collaborate with private and public entities alike to maintain their vision of sustainability when it comes to design. ROOMS WITH VROOM

These hotels put guests in the driver’s seat By George Hobica

Always eager to create memorable experiences, some of Europe’s best hotels are introducing their guests to some of Europe’s most celebrated motor vehicles. I first got an inkling of this trend upon exiting the Le Meridien Beach Plaza Hotel in Monte Carlo one morning this past summer. Parked out front was a Citroen DS19 convertible, which, I learned, I could rent from a local company that works with the Beach Plaza and other Cote d’Azur hotels to provide guests with a once-in-alifetime thrill. Yes, thrill. I get emotional whenever I see a Citroen because I owned a 1972 DS21 for seven wonderful years during which the car, although admittedly idiosyncratic and requiring a certain amount of coddling, never failed or stranded me. (I bought it second-hand in 1973 for $2,000 [KD 600] and sold it for $3,000 [KD 900]. Even though it was a sound investment, after nearly 50 years I count selling it as one of my dumbest moves). And I’m not alone in my adulation. The Wall Street Journal’s esteemed automobile writer, Dan Neil, has called the Citroen DS “the most beautiful car of all time.” And Jay Leno calls it “the most innovative car ever designed” and “the most comfortable car ever built” (there’s a great episode of Jay Leno’s Garage on YouTube devoted to his 1971 DS). You’ve seen this car before: it has starred in countless films and TV shows. Chevy Chase drove one in National Lampoon’s European Vacation, it appeared in The Pink Panther 2, and 48

most recently in Call Me by Your Name. And in fact the Citroen I saw in Monte Carlo was the very same car that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie drive during the opening credits of 2015’s By the Sea, set on the Cote d’Azur in the 1960s. They play a couple on the verge of divorce, ironically. (RentAClassicCar.com; their Citroen DS rents for 429 euros [KD 150] per day including insurance). For some reason, Le Meridien hotels in Europe hold mid-20th century vehicles in high regard (maybe it’s because the hotels’ design aesthetic is mid-century modern). At Paris’ Le Meridien Etoile, which recently celebrated its 50th birthday, I became acquainted for the first time with 2CV Paris Tours, a company that offers rides in another cultish Citroen automobile, the bug-eyed but adorable CV2, which plays ugly duckling to the DS’ swan. Introduced in 1948, nearly 4 million of these two-cylinder cars were sold during a 42-year production run. Prepare to be the center of attention as you cruise past Paris’ famous landmarks because paparazzi are going to Instagram you (or at least give you some thumbs up), and with the sunroof rolled back you can stand up and Instagram them. (2CVparistour.com, prices from 70 euros [KD 24.5].) Speaking of the paparazzi, pests that have traditionally driven a Vespa to chase their prey, the concierge at Rome’s Visconti Hotel can set you up with My Vespa Tours, a company renting the classic putt-putt made famous in countless Italian films of the 50s and 60s (Rock Hudson squires Gina Lollobrigida on the back of one in 1961’s silly rom-com “Come September”); or

they’ll provide a driver if the idea of navigating Rome’s madcap traffic seems too crazy. It’s a great way to see a lot of Rome in a short time, snapping photos as you pass the city’s historic treasures. (MyVespatours.com, tour prices start at 68 euros [KD 23].) You will definitely be the driver, however, if indulging in the “Grand Touring Experience” offered by three classic European hotels. The package includes a five-day rental of a Ferrari 488 GTB (zero to 60 in 3.0 seconds), a Porsche 911 Turbo convertible, or a Maserati GranCabrio MC convertible along with one night at the historic Dolder Grand in Zurich including breakfast, dinner and drinks; two nights at the Chedi Hotel in Andermatt, Switzerland, including a four-course dinner; and a two-night stay at Lake Como’s Il Sereno Lago di Como, including dinner with wine pairings. Also included: insurance for that very valuable car you’ll be driving ($4,975 [ KD 1509], thechediandermatt.com). Four Seasons Hotels also package vintage cars — a 1960 Giulietta Spider, a 1958 MercedesBenz 190 SL Cabrio or a 1956 Porsche 356A Speedster — with stays at their properties in Florence and Milan and the legendary Grand Hotel Cap-Ferrat on the Cote d’Azur. Start your grand tour at any of the three hotels, and their concierges will recommend the best stops along the way. (Prices vary, on request, FourSeasons.com). And speaking of classic cars and the hotels that love them, I’ve just learned that Manhattan’s Baccarat Hotel ferries guests around town, for free, in a pristine cherry red 1972 Citroen DS. Guess where I’m staying next time I visit New York City.

DINNER AND A MOVIE, PERFECTED

The true performance begins with THEATRE by Rhodes at VOX Cinemas

By bazaar staff

bazaar entered a whole new world of entertainment through a glittering disco ball of a magical portal found in The Avenues, Phase 4 (Grand Plaza). Like a magical carpet ride, the escalators delivered us to the VOX cinemas foyer where, to the left, our eyes rested upon the beautifully presented reception desk reminiscent of checking into Business Class which is THEATRE by Rhodes. This is the ultimate cinematic experience for those bazaarites who like to be comfortable at home on the couch engrossed in a TV series binge watch, but THEATRE by Rhodes is even better than that, if you can believe it. You get to experience the latest mustsee movie and still recline onto a soft pillow, a blanket wrapped around you, and in-cinema waiter service the mere push of a service-button away. 56

[Continued...]

With a warm welcome the staff explained the entire process so we could choose the best theatre experience. They helpfully pointed out the direction of the screen and who was sitting elsewhere within the cinema so it felt like we were getting our own private screening. The first noticeable thing was the exclusive seating in the cinema with no more than thirty one seats available in the largest of the four cinemas. Plus we were guaranteed that no giggling kids would annoy us during the screening as all the clients of THEATRE by Rhodes must be over eighteen. We moved beyond the ticket desk into the main lobby with a wonderfully presented bar on the righthand side. Here, we relaxed before the show and there were a number of immaculate tables or bar stool areas to sit and enjoy a refreshment while the staff took our orders. Presented was a full menu curated by British Chef Gary Rhodes, who boasts 6 Michelin stars to his name, and the staff further explained that included with the theatre ticket is a starter, main course and dessert, and the choice of two drinks. For example, you can opt for a mocktail and a hot drink to relax with while you settle in to watch the end of your movie.

The menu is extensive and the fine food is handcrafted on location using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients. Chef Rhodes himself has plated dishes in these kitchens making sure that each dish presented lives up to his exacting standards. The menu even has options that are suitable for vegetarians with dairy, gluten, nuts and shellfish clearly indicated. For a delicious starter you can’t go wrong with that cinema staple of nachos, offered here plate-warm and Mexican style, but there is another world of flavors to discover with Edamame beans, Manchego and Feta fritters, and Breakfast Burritos amongst other international influences to be savored. Whether to totally indulge, or to go for something a little lighter, there is every option available to you here. Take the perfect cinema hotdog and top it with richly smoked BBQ onions or melting Swiss cheese. Order the burger plate with three kinds of juicy burger; homemade New York deli or French-style beef burgers, grilled chicken breast. The vegetarian’s favorite Portobello mushroom burger comes laden with guacamole and sour cream to take your taste

buds to the next level. We ordered the Satay Skewers, and the prawns were cooked to perfection. It is good to note that even if you do not want to watch a movie, you can enjoy THEATRE by Rhodes as a stand-alone restaurant. It certainly has fine food excellent enough to make you want to come here solely to eat. Wash your food down with fresh juices or mocktails worthy of top mixologists, and local tastes will certainly find the Nutella and peanut butter milkshake hard to resist. Ice creams, sorbets and sundaes make the dessert list, so they melt into what little holes are left of your appetite. But, the absolute luxury of THEATRE by Rhodes is in the seating. Making your way into your seat with ease is a joy with each seat row being placed far part enough from the other which makes the wide walkways wheelchair accessible. Also, the seats which are placed in twos, are distant enough from other pairs so that when you receive table service the other theatregoers are not overly disturbed and you can’t see what other viewers are up to. Take your shoes off and relax! The reclining leather seats boast an adjustable foot rest and for the complete cozy experience, a freshly laundered and individually wrapped complementary pillow and blanket is folded waiting for you to unfurl and wrap around yourself while you settle back to enjoy the fantastic viewing on screen. A service button is set neatly into the arm of your chair for swift responses from attentive staff, perhaps to clear away each course or to take more orders for some other foody indulgence, whatever is your whim. “Yes madam, you called” gave me a slight startle as my foot had obviously pressed the service button as I was squirming around luxuriating in the sheer enjoyment and comfort of it all. My fellow bazaarites giggled because THEATRE by Rhodes feels like you are doing something naughty and actually getting away with it! Thoughtfully here is a little rectangular dish ideally situated to place your keys and your wallet so you don’t lose them or to rest your cell phone while you charge it in the usb port which is placed in each seating space. The table area given to each seat is roomy with extra surface area provided the dining element of the experience obviously carefully considered in the planning. Dish after dish can arrive, as there is plenty of room to have your starters and mains delivered at the same time so you and your friends can share each other’s award winning menu choices. Everything about this experience is utterly indulgent and luxurious, and what better way is there to share a film with friends. You can hide under the blanket during a scary horror, cry into your pillow during sad scenes or cheers cocktails in joy at happy endings, looking forward to your next THEATRE by Rhodes experience.

THEATRE by Rhodes is housed in VOX cinemas, The Avenues, Phase 4 (Grand Plaza) . Follow them on Instagram and Facebook @voxkuwait for more information and download the VOX Cinemas App from Appstore for iPhone and Google Playstore for android to buy your tickets or visit kwt.voxcinemas.com. 58

MOSCOW MISUNDERSTOOD

Olympics to Football and everything in between

By Ayman Nassar

When I say Russia, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Be honest! We’re all guilty of allowing preconceived notions to dominate the our judgment process. It is difficult to avoid stereotypes, especially as they are perpetuated in mainstream news and on social media. When people hear Russia, they automatically think Bratva (Russian mafia), rivers of haram beverages, and other not-so-pleasant thoughts. Current international sentiments also do not paint a pretty picture. This could not be farther from the truth. The largest landmass country in the world, Russia does not disappoint by being home to over 20 different ethnic groups, practically making it the melting pot of the world. As the entire world has enjoyed Russia’s hospitality, thanks to hosting the 2018 World Cup, I too sought to get in on the action. However, just like internet explorer, I was late to the party. Four months late. Having recently made the trip, I thought it best to bring the news from the horse’s mouth to the pages of bazaar: Getting Stamped: Applying for a visa is a “relatively” easy task. It took me three 1.5KM walks to get it right, as I had to park my car at Green Island and walk into the Ministries zone. In the height of summer. Be wary, as different nationalities have different processing times (mine took 21 days). Special tip: the website says light background picture, but they mean white. You’ll also need an invite from a travel agency that can easily be acquired online. Arriving at the airport: Landing in Vnukovo international airport was an adventure unlike any I had previously experienced. I’d just returned to Kuwait at 7 PM and had to prep for a 2 AM flight. In my sleep deprived state, I forgot the cardinal rule of travel: always print/ save your documents. When you approach immigration, they have around 10 or so stalls with a gate beside them, little did I realize there was also an iron shutter above. After I failed to produce printed/ soft copies of my documents (as the internet was very slow), I was asked to wait on the side. Slowly but surely, the airport emptied until it was just me and a dozen other visitors bearing a resemblance to me. The shutters suddenly came down, and my first thought was, we’re going to be herded back to the plane! By that time, I had downloaded all the necessary paperwork and thankfully, one gate opened. I was in. And it was cold. Moscow on foot: The first thing you will notice in Moscow is that the city is very pedestrian-friendly and wheel 60

(stroller/ chair) accessible. All entrances to the metro have a narrow lane where you can roll down. All roads have ample pedestrian paths and drivers stop at pedestrian crossings. Parks are aplenty and are a great place to have a leisurely walk, a relaxing sit by a miniature lake, or a rigorous workout at the free open-air gym (with boxing bags and monkey bars to boot). Their underground system is immense, and built in circular fashion (ode to our Ring Roads here). Some boast art and décor reminiscent of the renaissance era, and are an absolute wonder to experience (the long escalators however are quite disconcerting, especially if you are looking behind you thinking, domino effect). The food: Food from all over the world is available on the streets of Moscow. You can try authentic Russian cuisine, or you can enjoy meals you are familiar with, but with a Russian twist (for me it was a chicken schnitzel with cowberry courtesy of Dr. Zhivago and a succulent, juicy steak thanks to Voronezh). Cost: Earning in Dinars? You are in for a treat! Russia

is surprisingly cheap. You’ll be filling your luggage with everyday items such as instant coffee and groceries, as opposed to gifts and clothing. Language: The metro has English voice overs. The road signs have subtitles. It made the time I spent learning the Cyrillic alphabet almost obsolete, however I enjoyed standing like an awkward 5-yearold trying to spell out a word they’re reading. It was only confusing when the Russian word is read in English, for example, BEHOM (this is not a code, it is the name of a comic book movie currently in theaters). Contrary to popular belief, a culture is not representative of its geopolitics. Instead of building walls, we should be boarding planes. This was my first, but definitely far from last, trip to the largest country in the world, as there is still much exploring left to do. Like the Rubik's cube, Ayman Nassar is multi-colored in his interests, from running to organizing races, stand up comedy and internal audit, plus a little writing on the side. 10 OUTRAGEOUS TALENT MACHINES And how great ideas are born By David Lidsky

1. Procter & Gamble -1931 Neil McElroy, then a junior exec, recommended to his bosses that each of P&G's brands be run as its own business, a decentralized approach that inspired modern brand management. The impact: Running Crisco or Tide proved to be great CEO training; alums include Steve Case, Meg Whitman, and Steve Ballmer. 2. William Morris Agency -1937 The talent agency required new employees to start in the mail room, schooling them in the inner workings of the entertainment business. The impact: The program was widely adopted, producing several generations of moguls, including Ari Emanuel, who later merged his upstart agency, Endeavor, with William Morris. 3. Doyle Dane Bernbach -1949 Ad agency head Bill Bernbach had the then novel idea to pair copywriters with art directors; the teambased approach led to seminal, widely admired work, particularly for Volkswagen. The impact: Young creatives flocked to DDB and rival agencies poached them to mimic its wry style, inspiring the ad world's Mad Men heyday. 4. Second City -1959 The improv comedy theater trained performers to be present and play to the top of their intelligence, 62

sharpening the skills of future stars Joan Rivers, Tina Fey, and Keegan-Michael Key. The impact: Second City inspired several rival theaters-slash-schools, including Upright Citizens Brigade, a current feeder for comedic talent. 5. Chez Panisse -1971 Alice Waters opened a restaurant to explore local, organic, and seasonal cuisine, attracting chefs interested in this revolutionarily simple style. The impact: By focusing on ingredients, Panisse's chefs created New American cooking, and alums such as Deborah Madison and Dan Barber have elevated vegetables in fine dining. 6. MIT Media Lab -1985 Former MIT president Jerome Wiesner and architecture professor Nicholas Negroponte wanted to reinvent university research around projects. The impact: More than 150 companies have been founded by alumni and MIT Media Lab staff, including Jonah Peretti's BuzzFeed and startups later acquired by Dropbox, Spotify, and Twitter. 7. Disney Channel -1989 As the network expanded into original programming, it sought out young performers who could act, sing, dance, and hit specific "moments"--comedic and dramatic--to capture viewers. The impact: Disney has created several generations

of young stars, among them Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, Miley Cyrus, and Zendaya. 8. General Magic -1990 Before most people even had email, this Applebacked startup envisioned smartphones and apps. Its audacity made it a magnet for young engineers. The impact: General Magic employees went on to develop today's internet-connected device and app ecosystem at Apple, Google, Instagram, Nest, and Pinterest. 9. Google -1998 Cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin reduced managers' power so as not to inhibit the creativity of Google engineers. The impact: This teamlike approach counterintuitively produced waves of talented leaders, such as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Scores of "Xooglers" have also founded their own startups. 10. Daisie -2018 In January, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams announced Daisie, an app to discover new talent in art, fashion, film, and music—and pair them with each other and 100 established mentors. The impact: Daisie has attracted more than 50,000 Instagram followers and was expected to be released last summer.

THE GLAMOUR AND ANTI-GLAMOUR OF THE SEASON celebrates women in comedy By bazaar staff

Stand-up comics possess a unique kind of fearlessness that many of us aspire to. They get up on the stage and make other people laugh. & Other Stories wanted to showcase their latest holiday collection in that light. The & Other Stories woman might not take the stage every night, but she is still as brave as Aparna Nancherla and Jen Kirkman.

64

The funny female duo took part in an offstage campaign at the El Portal Theater one of LA’s iconic theaters in the heart of the city’s Art District. The three-minute video is titled “A Backstage Story” and it is like being invited to see what happens before the curtains are raised. Aparna Nancherla and Jen Kirkman meet for the first time before the show, and they instantly hit it off and are supporting and rallying for each other. The story is whimsical, light and very real. It is a celebration of silliness, sparkles, struggles and sisterhood. This campaign feels like spending the evening with your BFFs, laughing and telling stories while sipping on hot cocoa. & Other Stories is a female-driven brand that is committed to empowering women. Women in comedy have always paved the way for the rest of us. It is in their job description. They stand up and they talk. And their voices have always been unafraid and unfiltered. They get into politics, women’s issues, rights and even the mundane such as who does the laundry at home. And because it is all packaged in laughter, the point gets across. In today’s world we need them more than ever. The collaboration is a salute to their stories and all of ours. Aparna understands her role in changing the status quo. “Fighting apathy is one of the best things comedy can do, by introducing people to new ideas in a more accessible, less threatening way. I think true equality comes when anyone can talk about their actual experiences onstage,” she said. Jen Kirkman and Aparna Nancherl are at the forefront of a movement and are part of the great wave of women who are revolutionizing contemporary comedy and creating a shift in today’s society by bringing a set of fresh voices to the comedy scene. Women who are slowly, surely, and calmly challenging the world and making it better for themselves, other women and everyone else. And while women comedians often make fun of themselves and others when it comes to clothing, they also understand how important their look is. “The look from today that I would most wear on stage is the black satin suit with the black and white stars shirt. A part of my onstage persona is my clothing – it makes me feel so connected and proud when women tell me that my fearlessness in the way I dress makes them want to dress for themselves instead of someone else,” says Jen Kirkman. She has penned a bestselling memoir and has two highly watched and loved solo shows on Netflix. She understands that her style is part of her personal brand. The suit is beautiful, the way it shimmers and catches the light while you move will make you stand out in any room. & Other Stories wanted Jen and Aparna to highlight both the glamour and the anti-glamour of the holiday season in a 3-minute film titled “Stand Up and Stand Out” and some other

short clips. Jen gets candid about her mother’s lipstick from the 1970’s and Aparna tells us why she loves jumpsuits and how they can also be problematic. They also talk about dressing pets. It is an endearing video. The & Other Stories celebration collection stands out as being fun and an invitation to women to express themselves as fearlessly as the two beloved comedy stars. Regardless of how you prefer to express yourself there is an outfit for you. From effeminate fringed frocks, sleek tuxedo-inspired ensembles, powerful glitzy

dresses and a sparkly full-on-sequin suit. All of the pieces are sleek, beautiful and flattering.

Follow in the footsteps of these amazing women and create a look for yourself this season that will inspire you to find and use your voice for yourself and your sisters. Find Aparna and Jen’s collaboration in stores starting from Thursday December the 6th. THE BOY WHO COOKED UP A BOOK Interview with full-time blogger turned author Shivesh Bhatia By Deepa Pant

He is India's best-loved blogger, an Instagram sensation, a self-taught baker and now, a baking cookbook author. He's been Conde Nast Traveller's social media star of the year 2017 and even been featured in Vogue's list of '20 Under 26' in 2017. Shivesh Bhatia loves being in the kitchen. It's practically his second home. It's the place he whips up his famous eggless Chocolate Chip Cookies and his signature Orange-Almond Cake. The self-taught baker attributes his baking flair to his maternal grandmother who, he says, used to make the best chocolate cake. Tall, lanky, enthusiastic, with a thick mop of dark hair, Shivesh started baking at the age of 16, and has since evolved an inimitable style of his own with his own brand of passion and dedication. All of 22, Delhi-based Shivesh's debut book Bake with Shivesh offers a glorious collection of interesting and accessible recipes. And there are gorgeous photographs as well, all styled and shot by Shivesh himself. The recipes are simple, sensible and fuss-free. Most importantly, they work. The author spells everything out. He helps you create magic in your kitchen. The book is perfect for novices and as well as for those who thought they already knew everything about baking. Bake With Shivesh is to be devoured from cover to cover! But not only for its recipes. The book serves as a handy reference to food styling, food photography and myriad other tips for millennials and older folks like me alike. When did you decide to write a cookbook? I’ve always wanted to write a cookbook. Ever since I started blogging, writing a book has been a dream but I never thought I would get the opportunity to do it at 22. I was, in fact, 21 when the book offer came to me. I had just completed my bachelor’s degree in political science from Hindu College (in New Delhi) and had started blogging full time. My editor, Shreya, from HarperCollins sent me a message on Instagram asking if I’d be remotely interested in doing a book. My answer was an obvious 'Yes!' We met, discussed the concept, signed the contract and began working on Bake With Shivesh. What was the most difficult part about writing this book? Time management and working on it while still keeping the blog and Instagram active was tough. I created 100 recipes for the book (shortlisted 54 finally). I also styled and shot all the recipes on my own. This work was done while still creating, shooting and styling recipes for the blog. There were days when I used to feel exhausted, not just physically but mentally. But working on the book was a great learning experience for me. I had too much fun putting it together and really 68

believe I consciously pushed myself to create better recipes and pictures. What's your most favorite recipe in the cookbook? I have two: Apple Choux Buns that are filled with a delicious cheesecake filling and then dipped in my favorite toffee sauce. The other recipe I love is the Breakfast Tart, which has a crust made out of oats and almonds and a yogurt filling. The tart is refined sugar and refined flour-free and super yummy! What’s one recipe anyone - even someone who’s no MasterChef - can nail in your book? I think all the recipes I’ve shared in the book (except a few, maybe) are all doable. I have explained them in a way so as to break them down into simple, easy to follow steps. If you follow the recipe carefully, I’m sure you’ll be able to recreate all the recipes at home. Two of the easiest recipes in the book are Raspberry Mousse (with a honey and oat crumble) and Grapefruit-Cardamom Tiramisu. Both are nobake, easy to put together and very simple! Spill the beans on your future: what big future plans do you have and is there another book on the horizon? I’d definitely want to start work on the next book very soon. I’m sure there’ll be another book! I also plan to start a YouTube channel. It’ll be great to connect with my audience through another medium! Favorite ingredient? Street food? Dessert? Lemons, Momos, and I can’t pick just one [dessert]!

A kitchen gadget you can't live without? A spatula. Go to snack? Cookies. If you were having a dinner party and you could invite any 5 people, living or dead, who would your guests be? Pierre Herme, Martha Stewart, Nigella Lawson, Mary Berry and Dominique Ansel. I’ll probably get too excited and faint but it’ll be interesting. If you could choose anyone to bake with in the kitchen with, who would it be and why? Nigella Lawson! It’ll be a dream come true! Her style of baking is something I relate to and get very inspired by - it’s simple, accessible and makes you want to bake! Favorite restaurant in the Middle East? What is your favorite Middle Eastern food? I love Cocoa Room in Dubai, and it has to be hummus all the way!

HIDDEN POCKETS OF FREE TIME And where to find them

By Laura Vanderkam

No room in your day for exercise, networking, volunteering, reading, meditating, or any of the other priorities that keep getting bumped from your to-do list? A time-management expert demonstrates how easy it can be to liberate minutes, if not hours, from tight schedules. Yes, even yours. 6:30 a.m. - Quit the snooze button. Get up right away. Thirty minutes of margin gives you enough time to run on a treadmill (or outside!) for 20 minutes. Do this four times per week and you'll meet the US’s CDC's (Center for Disease Control) "vigorous exercise" guidelines—and feel more energized than you will from that extra half hour of snoozing. 7:15 a.m. - Meditate/pray/count your blessings in the shower. Most people let their minds wander in there anyway. Why not nudge yourself in a positive direction? 7:45 a.m. - Put a reading app (Kindle, Instapaper, Pocket) on your phone. A recent study by Asurion revealed that Americans check their phones, on average, 80 times a day. Use 10 of those reflexive scrolling breaks to read an article 70

or a book. You can even tackle War and Peace on your Kindle app this way: Tolstoy's chapters are really short, ideal for three-minute breaks. 8:00 a.m. - Commute with a friend. It might not be practical every day, but sharing the ride with a friend—or your partner—once a week will turn what might be wasted time into the social highlight of your day. 9:00 a.m. - Establish the 20/45 rule. Most 30or 60-minute meetings can be trimmed to 20 or 45, with discipline. That wins you back precious time. Try not to fill this extra time with more meetings. 10:45 a.m. - Take smokeless breaks. Smoking is terrible, but getting away from your desk and outside every few hours is smart. Copy smokers— without lighting up—by going for a quick, moodboosting walk at lunch and midafternoon. 12:00 p.m. - Nix errands and limit your virtual window-shopping. Plan ahead, and you can easily chop this in half. 2:15 p.m. - Use those walking breaks to mentor. Ask a younger colleague to join you for a 15-minute chat. (Bonus: Outside the office, they're more likely to ask real questions.) 5:30 p.m. - Don't fear commitment. If you want to volunteer at a homeless shelter or literacy

program or soup kitchen, do it. Sign up for a regular gig, and why not make it a Friday evening? You'll have a great excuse to push back on that 5 p.m. meeting request. 6:00 p.m. - Host a week-night potluck. Or an every-Monday get together, or any recurring gettogether with friends that you don't have to plan from scratch. It's the planning that people dread. Save that time for the actual socializing. 8:00 p.m. - Put a limit on housework. The average American spends about 30 minutes per day on house-hold chores (not counting food prep and cleanup). Set a 15-minute timer for tidying. If it doesn't happen during this time, it wasn't urgent. 9:30 p.m. - Turn off the TV. Many people with full-time jobs still manage to watch more than two hours of TV per day, according to the ATUS (American Time Use Survey). Trim that to 90 minutes and you've got 30 minutes to read, practice an instrument, or chat with friends or family with-out serious sacrifice. 10:30 p.m. - Give yourself a bedtime. Going to bed early is how grown-ups sleep in. You'll be less likely to hammer that snooze button in the morning so you can get the new day off to a productive start.

REMINDER: DON’T BUY “SMART” TOYS FOR KIDS THIS YEAR Trust the security researchers on this

By Jesus Diaz

Yet another hacking scandal has hit yet another company that makes smartwatches for kids. It’s a good opportunity to remind Santa that he should not, under any circumstances, bring “smart” toys to kids until there are tough privacy and security standards in place. According to a new report from the BBC, MiSafes’ child-tracking smartwatches are easy to hack because the device “neither encrypted the data they used nor secured each child’s account.” The unsecured accounts contain a photo of the child, name, gender, date of birth, height, weight, parents’ phone number, and the phone number of the watch. Security researchers found that anybody with minimal technical knowledge can track kids’ movements, eavesdrop into their daily lives, and even make fake calls that appear to be from the kids’ parents. The watch, according to the report, has used GPS tracking and 2G cell connectivity to, ostensibly, keep thousands of children safe since 2015. Except it doesn’t. “It’s probably the simplest 72

hack we have ever seen,” security researchers Ken Munro and Alan Monie told the BBC. MiSafes is not the exception. It’s the norm. Last November, the German equivalent to the FCC urged parents to destroy smartwatches for children that were shown to have eavesdropping capabilities. Norwegian authorities echoed these concerns. Previous to that, Germany had already banned a smart doll that could be used to spy on kids. Earlier in 2016, Fisher-Price was under fire for a smart teddy bear that could be hacked to track children. As a result, the European Union and some European countries are cracking down on these poorly developed devices made by companies banking on your most basic fears (about your kid being abducted) or pure desperation (what to get your kid for the holidays). Meanwhile, the United States hasn’t done anything to stop them, even while we read about these types of hacks seemingly every single month. It’s a massive problem that extends across all IoT devices and an alarming number of apps for kids.

It’s one thing for adults to entrust their privacy to corporations without any qualms. For instance, if you know that Facebook’s products are designed to scrape your personal data for ad targeting, and that it allowed user data to be wielded to influence elections, and that it may expose that data in breaches, and you choose to use them anyway? That’s your choice as an adult. But don’t impose a disregard for data privacy on kids. They have neither the information nor the judgment to know better when it comes to connected devices. So, as you go into the seasonal sales on the hunt for presents, keep all of this in mind. Skip the smart teddy bears, smartwatches, smart games, smart anything. Instead, get them teddy bears that don’t have cameras, watches that just measure time, and games that are played on paper. The internet of things for kids is not ready– and it won’t be until regulations are put in place to ensure your kids’ safety first.

WHY GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES ARE ALWAYS A BAD IDEA A user-friendly guide on how to invest WISE-ly with Gulf Bank By bazaar staff

I

t’s already December and we fared really badly in our New Year’s resolution of creating a nest egg and getting our finances in order. But with 2019 at the door we are determined to do better next year. And as they say, another day, another Dinar! There are two types of people in this world. Risk-lovers and the risk averse, and which group you belong to will usually determine how you choose to grow your money. With so many options, many of them shady, it is way easier to lose money than make it. So, you have some money in your bank account and are smart enough to know that with inflation, leaving it there means that its value just decreases with time. What do you do? Better yet, what investment strategies should you avoid? We spoke with the experts at Gulf Bank’s latest investment platform WISE and came back with these tidbits. Remember, you are not the Wolf of Wall Street If risk doesn’t scare you, then buying shares on the stock market will. You signed up to that website that promised you quick and large returns on your capital. Gave them your credit card or bank information without breaking a sweat. Then started trading as if you were the new Warren Buffet. But even Warren Buffet knows that’s not how it works and plays a long game. Not to mention the hidden fees and expenses that keep recurring. Suddenly you are broke and back to living from paycheck to paycheck, if you’re lucky. Get WISE: Unless you’re a monetary genius (Think Billions’ Bobby Axelrod), let the experts at WISE do the nitty-gritty work for you instead. They create diversified portfolios that are more risk resistant and can weather stormy market conditions. No heartattacks necessary.

74

You bought real estate in Dubai So, you believe in the statement “safe as houses”, because everyone knows that investing in real estate is a safe bet. Turns out, that’s not always true. It is true that in general buying property keeps your initial capital from losing value, but we also saw what happened in the great crash of 2008. Apartments and houses need to be maintained and that is always a drain in your cash flow. They are also harder to liquidate if you ever need cash right away. Get WISE: You might be buying into the perceived notion of a safety net, but it is not real. A portfolio with WISE gives you the benefit of both short-term profits in the form of dividends and long-term initial capital investment growth. The qualified portfolio managers at WISE will help you grow your investment and you can exit with no hidden fees attached. If you ever need to cash out, liquidation is quick and easy without any exit penalties and no minimum time. You invested in your second cousin’s once removed cold brew coffee business Sorry to burst your bubble but cold brew coffee is so last Tuesday. It is all about Japanese cheesecake now and by the time this feature goes to print a new habba will have come up. Not to mention that your distant relative has no idea how to run a business, make coffee or even balance the books. Starting a business is a serious endeavor; if there is no feasibility study don’t walk away, run. There is also the awkwardness about dealing with money with people you know. Transparency might become an issue and you will almost always find out later rather than sooner. Get WISE: While we do admire the real entrepreneurs, who put in the time and effort to follow something they are really passionate about, that is not the same thing as investing your hardearned cash in an unknown scheme. With WISE, you avoid the awkward ‘what happened to my money’ question because everything is fully transparent. You think you're going to be the next Cryptocurrency billionaire The bubble was predicted to burst, and it did. And it keeps on fluctuating. You’re not playing fantasy football here, you’re literally gambling away your hardearned cash to a system that is too good to be true. You’re rallying your dinars to enter into a doomed investment battle. The Cryptocurrency market has

been more than volatile all year long, and you might give yourself a heart attack before you see any actual profits. Besides, Cryptocurrency mining uses more energy than actual mining for resources- so you wouldn’t be doing the environment any good. Get WISE: Unless all governments are ready to back Cryptocurrency, we suggest that you stick to the real world, and real financial markets. Please don’t be one of those people who take out monetary loans to invest in Crypto. Instead benefit from the help of an entire team of experts and a Nobel-prize winning investment strategy to secure your investments. Need we say more? You get real, you get WISE It seems like every option is a bad one but that is never true. A much better, safer and reliable option is Gulf Bank’s WISE. It will appeal to those of you who shy away from risk and those who relish it. Your investment portfolio is custom-built based on your personality profile. Your traits, likes, dislikes, fears, long and short-term goals will determine what would be invested on your behalf. And because everything is up-front and transparent, there will never be any second guessing your financial situation. You can even check on your current investment from any of your personal devices. WISE is completely clientdriven, so you get to decide what you want to do, while WISE will figure out how to make it happen for you. And if you ever need to cash out the process is painless and free. THE SLACK PRODUCTIVITY HACK "It's easy to get lost in the weeds."

By Christopher Zara

He listens to audiobooks on triple speed while walking to work, and brackets his day with carefully guarded family time. Here’s how Slack founder Cal Henderson uses Slack to manage his time. CAL HENDERSON COFOUNDER AND CTO, SLACK: I walk to work almost every day. I listen to audiobooks when I walk, at three-times speed, so a book every couple of days. Bad Blood [by John Carreyrou] is so good! It's fun and terrifying and definitely makes you feel better about running a company that isn't Theranos. I'm very calendar-driven. I get in, and my day is already laid out—and my week, to some extent. So I try to take a step back and ask myself: "What are the things that are the most strategically important, and am I allocating my time to them correctly?" Things like team communications, or hiring, or represent ting the company externally. . . . Am I spending the right percentage of my time on them? It's easy to get lost in the weeds. I've never exchanged an email with somebody else who works at Slack. I check my email maybe once a day. It's quite peripheral to how I work. . . . A lot of my productivity around using Slack is knowing to prioritize what information I need to see. That means [heavily] muting channels or not joining channels, and "starring" the ones that are really important to me. With the rise of mobile in the workplace, it's easy to be working all the time. I think it can be enabled by a tool like Slack. But you don't have to use it in that way. I don't look at Slack when I'm doing family stuff. . . . I just had my second kid. [Having kids] changed not just my routine— which of course it does—but also my attitude toward, and relationship with, time management. Spending time with my family in the morning and at the end of the day brackets my work in a very strict way. I have to be a lot more intentional about how I spend my time. First thing he does in the morning - "I read news headlines on my phone." Productivity philosophy - "When you build a company, you're making three things: the product or service that you're providing, the business, and the culture. Building a culture that you want to be part of is huge for productivity." Lunch routine - "I'm kind of a garbage human in how I eat, but I try to make lunch my healthier meal of the day and leave the office to have lunch whenever possible." What he does with 15 minutes of free time - "Find somebody in the organization I haven't spoken to in a while and spend 15 minutes picking their brain about what's on their mind. As our organization grows, I'm never going to have perfect information about what's happening. People all over the organization, and in different roles, always have good insights into what we could be doing better." What he lets slide without feeling guilty - "Probably my personal email inbox. I have sent some replies to people like a decade later." Last thing he does at night - "I usually listen to some audiobooks in the half hour before I go to sleep." Time he goes to bed - Around 10:30 or 11 p.m. 76

YOU LOOKED, BUT DIDN’T SEE

Absolute must-listen track: Jon Hopkins “Immunity” By George Tarabay

Ever seen a show where the finale is so smooth, it actually makes you revisit everything you saw in a new light? You might know from my previous articles that the questions I present at the beginning are usually comedic. This one is more like a magic trick: The big reveal is in fact a deeper burial of the trick, and it’s served with a lot of sleight of hand. (Editor’s note: This article is continued from last month’s “You hear, but did you listen?”) I am blessed with a wife that heard my self-muted battle even though I didn’t want her to. It takes a special force of will and empathy to become such a humble hero to someone. Her empathy was rooted in her immense love, and her will is forged from her solid upbringing that led her to make a conscious decision to navigate through the fire to salvage a single leaf from an already gone forest. Bold no? Some might even say intense. I’ll even say it myself: I would have never done for myself what she did for me. And I know the next question on your mind is: What if it’s a person I just met and they’re struggling psychologically? Where do I root my empathy in? That’s a question many ask in different forms. But why should you even care? The brightest minds in the world agree on the same empathetic level: Help a soul that can never repay you back and experience the world with a new perspective. Let’s be clear: I’m not one to go with the masses; just because a scientific authority dictates something then it becomes automatically set in stone. But this notion vibrated with my soul that it became one of the very 78

few things I believe in. Ever wake up in the middle of the week, decide that the weather is so beautiful that you just take an impromptu day off, then head out and do things you wouldn’t normally do on a Tuesday at 10 am? Remember how the sun felt brighter that day? Remember how it felt like you existed in a realm so uncommon that it just feels warm and realistically euphoric? I think you experienced this at least once. Now imagine that same feeling multiplied by a thousand times. That’s the best analogy I can think of for a selfless act: an unplanned day-off. Ending someone’s struggles is not a one-time battle. It’s not even a one-hero job. Unless you want to take on that immense responsibility, do know it will be as intense for you as it is for the person going through it. Validation… that’s where you should start. A person experiencing mental struggles is often not looking for ways to get “over it”. They need someone to listen, and to tell them that it’s ok to feel how they feel. EMPATHY. Nothing more, nothing less. Its presence is heaven, its absence is hell for a struggling brain. It’s all the mind needs to assert its dominance over a demon it cannot detect, address, and ignore. Attention is a precious commodity; we spend it on ads, on pictures on Instagram, yet second guess if we should listen to someone in a pit. Surely I don’t want this to be misunderstood, so let me clarify: People who struggle with mental illnesses don’t want attention (for the most part). If anything, their total evasion of attention is what leads people to take regrettable actions.

It’s, again, empathy… that’s all they’re looking for. What’s the difference? Attention is short-lived. Empathy is timeless. Your extension of it to someone isn’t bound by a specific moment. Rescue missions don’t have to be as huge as what my wife did for me. Heroes don’t have to navigate fires. They also help the old lady cross the road. Empathy in action gets one tiny hurdle out of the old lady’s way. It’s that simple. Believe me. I wouldn’t lie to you. Just know that whatever my wife did for me when I was in the pit, has not only affected me, but it also inspired me to be empathetic towards anyone who needs it… just because. To provide to many what one person provided to me when many didn’t… Empathy does not expire. It knows no priority but itself… To conclude: Will this simple act lead to a resolution to depression? Does it help the brain cure itself? Does it lead the person to become better? Heaven only knows it doesn’t. At best it will lead to a reconciliation, not a resolution. It won’t cure it, nothing will. It only makes it less scary. A brain that struggles with its health keeps entering a self-resetting trap. The only way out is becoming fluid to it. I made my point; empathy is a force of immense power. It can liberate those who feel stuck, becoming a voice for those who are still in the pit, even when it seems that their own head isn’t going to pop out anytime soon. So here’s what I came up with… To continue reading this feature, visit www.bazaar.town. George Tarabay is a marketing expert/ Filmmaker/ comedian/ Podcaster. A GENDER NEUTRAL WORLD

Study: The more equal women and men are, the less they want the same things By Deborah Netburn

Imagine an egalitarian society that treats women and men with equal respect, where both sexes are afforded the same opportunities, and the economy is strong. What would happen to gender differences in this utopia? Would they dissolve? The answer, according to a new study, is a resounding no. The findings, published in Science, suggest that on the contrary, gender differences across six key personality traits — altruism, trust, risk, patience, and positive and negative reciprocity — increase in richer and more gender-equal societies. Meanwhile, in societies that are poorer and less egalitarian, these gender differences shrink. “Fulfilling basic needs is gender neutral,” said Johannes Hermle, a graduate student in economics at the University of California, Berkeley, who worked on the study. However, once those basic needs like food, shelter and good health are met and people are free to follow their own ambitions, the differences between men and women become more pronounced, he said. The new work is based on data collected by the Gallup World Poll in 2012. The survey was implemented in 76 countries that represented about 90 percent of the global population, the authors said. As part of the poll, respondents were asked a series of 12 questions designed to measure the personality traits that influence economic decisionmaking. These include a person’s willingness to take risks, their ability to delay immediate gratification, their inclination toward charitable giving, the degree to which they assume that others have good intentions, and their interest in rewarding kind acts and punishing slights, even if it comes at a financial cost. The questions were put to about 1,000 randomly selected people in each country. The study includes data from about 80,000 respondents, all 15 years old or older, the authors said. In their analysis, the researchers controlled for age, cognitive skills, education level, household income and local cultural norms. Once they did that, they found that globally, gender differences were present in all six categories. Overall, women were more altruistic and trusting than men, and also less patient and less likely to take risks. They scored higher in positive reciprocity (that is, an inclination to repay a favor) than men and lower in negative reciprocity (a desire to seek revenge for a slight). Further analysis of the data showed that these gender differences were significantly more pronounced in both richer countries and countries with more gender equality. “What we want to highlight here is that both factors matter,” Hermle said. “Both economic development 80

and gender equality have an independent impact.” The authors found that gender differences among the six traits were largest in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Australia. They were lowest in Ghana, Iraq, Tanzania, Pakistan and Iran. While these findings were statistically significant, Hermle cautions that the size of the effect is not that large. For each of these preferences, “there is a huge variation within genders,” he said. “If you randomly take a woman or man from the U.S. or some other country, knowing this person’s gender would tell you very little about their preferences.” The work does not address why women and men overall scored differently on these traits — for instance, whether this gender gap is biological or if it is imparted by the culture.

But Hermle said the results do rule out a theory that suggests these personality traits are dictated entirely by genetics and evolutionary biology. “We find enough variability across countries to indicate that people respond to the conditions in which they grow up,” he said. Ultimately, Hermle said, the study highlights the importance of including women in high-level decision making, both in society as a whole as well as in corporate structures. “Previous work has shown that higher female empowerment can improve child welfare and lead to a more democratic decisionmaking process,” he said. “It is important to have a plurality of preferences represented.”

HOW OUR 269 BILLION EMAILS A DAY HAVE MADE US MISERABLE And what you can do about it By Dan Schawbel

We should all plead guilty of email addiction. It’s made us anxious, stressed, and miserable. Yet, email is the most common form of communication in every industry, department, and country. Last year alone, the total number of business and consumer emails sent and received each day was 269 billion, and that’s projected to grow to 319.6 billion in the next three years. We also spend about 2.6 hours each day reading and answering them, which amounts to 27 days of email each year. We ask and answer questions, manage projects, sell to customers, and even manage crises with our daily digital missives. And while the back and forth can make us feel connected, the more time we spend using it, the fewer face-toface meetings we have. Email was built to make us more productive and bring us closer together, but our addiction to it has made us isolated and unhealthy. “It’s the most overused, misused, and inefficient way to communicate,” says Stephanie Bixler, the executive director of Technology Strategic Planning and Digital Strategy at Scholastic. “And it impacts me as it sucks up an enormous amount of time just sorting through and finding what matters vs. what does not. I barely get what I want to get accomplished, and I leave work unsatisfied.” Simply avoiding email altogether is impossible, yet we can make changes in our behavior that can make our work lives more functional and productive. THE EMAIL REBELLION Workers around the world are rebelling against email’s overreach into their personal lives, and both governments and companies are responding. In France, for instance, the Ministry of Labor enacted the “right to disconnect,” a law that permits employees to disconnect outside of office hours. Germany’s Daimler created a program entitled “Mail on Holiday,” that automatically deletes incoming emails when employees are on vacation. In America, Thrive Global, a company founded by Arianna Huffington, has a similar program around deleting emails on vacation. In a global study by Future Workplace and Virgin Pulse, we asked over 2,000 managers and employees about the technology they are increasingly dependent on when communicating, and almost half said email, compared to 15% who said text messaging and 12% instant messaging. Over a third of respondents said they are relying on email in place of face-to-face communication with their teammates. As a result of this behavior, they admit they feel lonely and disengaged despite needing social connection. 82

And, over a third said more face-time would save time from multiple back-and-forth email messages. A separate study found that one faceto-face meeting is the equivalent of 34 back-andforth email exchanges. A single side conversation can eliminate the frustration and tediousness of sending multiple emails. Email creates the illusion that we’re highly productive because we can multitask and “replyall,” yet it can create a continuous cycle where nothing gets accomplished. Researchers from the University of California at Irvine conducted an experiment where they eliminated email usage for five consecutive workdays for a group of 13 employees in one organization. The result showed that when workers stopped using email altogether, they were more focused and had reduced stress. Workers describe their use of email as a “double-edge sword” in how it makes it possible to work remotely and gain freedom and flexibility, but at the cost of impeding on our personal lives. Dan Klamm, the director of alumni relations at Nielsen, commonly receives emails from his global company’s colleagues in other time zones between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. “When I first started working, I was responding to these emails as they came in,” said Klamm. “Then, I realized that I needed to get some clear boundaries for myself or I would be working

around the clock!” Some of his boundaries include carrying a separate phone for work, not responding to email at night, and putting his phone on “do not disturb” between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. SETTING EMAIL BOUNDARIES Like 80% of people, I’m guilty of checking my email when I first wake up. Instead of focusing on my priorities, I end up responding to other people’s requests for my attention. Other workers are more restrained and vocal about their email boundaries. “I never check my email first thing in the morning. It sets me up in ‘reactive’ mode for the day, whether I realize it or not,” says Carly Charlson, senior manager of public relations at Best Buy. You have to set your own boundaries and manage email in the way that works best for you. When you’re always ‘”on,” are you ever truly “on”? Our overuse, and misuse, of email has made us miserable, less productive, and more stressed out. For the time being, email is at the core of our work culture, but as new collaborative technologies gain widespread adoption, our ability to pick and choose what to use–and when–will become more important. It’s time to use email to bring us closer together, set boundaries between work and life and not let it get the best of us.

CRUISING WITH THE

FERRARI 488 GTB

Extreme power for unique driving emotions; we experienced it all when we took this beauty out for a spin! By bazaar staff

DD

riving a Ferrari is always an enjoyable experience and last month, despite all the odds and riotous weather, was absolutely no different. Ferrari invited bazaar to test drive the 488 GTB. After weeks of organizing and hard work on their end, the chosen day turned out to be the infamous rainy day that took Kuwait by a surprise storm (pun may have been intended). By the time the day had started it was still looking overcast but beautiful. But ever confident in their cars, Ferrari knew the cars could handle any drive and we would have an exceptional experience regardless of the weather. Two Italian driving instructors from Ferrari were our special guests and we wanted to show them around Kuwait. We took off from the Ferrari showroom in Al Rai on the fourth ring road and headed to the wonderful Dar Hamad for breakfast. The 488 GTB is a powerful car. It delivers an unparalleled performance, but the driver can exploit it, providing extreme control that would please any petrol head. But unexperienced drivers can still control the car. As with any Ferrari, the engine is exceptional, and the aerodynamics are sophisticated. Combined with refined vehicle dynamic controls, the already razor-sharp responsiveness of the car, it 84

becomes incomparable to anything else on the road. After a hearty breakfast and blood-warming coffee we headed to the Jumeirah Messilah Hotel Resort and Spa, enjoying the scenic route via the Arabian Gulf Road, aka Blajat. The clouds were starting to clear up and the smooth driving made the trip seem to go much faster than it actually did. Forty years ago, Ferrari unveiled their first ever mid-rear engine V8, the 308 GTB. The 488 GTB, which incidentally stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. If you don’t speak Italian, it means Grand Tourer Coupé or little saloon. They are luxury automobiles that can do both high speeds and distances. Which might be why we wished we had longer stretch of road and no speed limits to push these babies to their max. Who would blame us? With the Power

(670 cv), engine and vehicle response times (0.8 s and 0.06 s respectively) is an experience that needs to be personally tested to truly appreciate. And you wouldn’t expect anything else from the company that consistently tops the F1 and GT racing charts. A heritage that was the underpinning of this car’s creation. We headed to our third meeting point at Starbucks Al Bidaa. Mostly lamenting how slowly we had to drive to stay under the 80km speed limit when we were driving cars that can go from a complete standstill in first to the limiter in fourth gear. And it is not just fast, it sounds amazing too. The improved turbines with reduced friction and inertia was carefully designed by the engineers to perfect the car’s sound. The new soundtrack is full, clear, progressive and totally distinctive. You just need to hear it to know it is none other than the Prancing Horse announcing its arrival or departure. Our penultimate stop of the day was for lunch at Le Notre and while we always appreciate the beautiful restaurant, the Ferrari’s cabin is where we truly wanted to stay. It exudes extreme sportiness without sacrificing luxury or comfort. The commands are all placed on the wraparound satellite pods that are angled at the driver. There is no clustering of

knobs and buttons, everything is evenly spaced more reminiscent of a cockpit than a dashboard. But it is not just about engineering and the utilitarian use experience. After all, Ferrari drivers demand elegance, handcrafted materials, richness, without losing functionality, and they will get it. Because the car is also meant to be driven on long road trips, there is ample storage space in easy to reach areas. It is a car that takes itself seriously but still knows how to have a lot of fun. It is proper and reserved in all the areas that matter like safety, performance, engineering and speed. But sexy, charming, elegant and suave without being stuck up in matters of entertainment, enjoyment and overall experience. The car wants you to be pleased. And while we were very pleased, we were sad that as all journeys this one had to come to an end. We drove back to the showroom, handed the keyless start keys back. Incidentally, the ‘smart’ key was inspired by the shape of the V8’s intake plenums. Another nod to Ferrari’s attention to detail and making sure everything stays true to their brand and who they are. It is difficult to walk away from a stunning car like that. After a final look at the dual grille opening at the front and the blown spoiler and the large air vents at the back, we waved goodbye, secretly hoping for our next adventure drive with Ferrari.

WHO LIVES WITH YOU? Facebook seeks to patent software to figure out profiles of households By Johana Bhuiyan

Facebook Inc. is applying to patent software that it could use to create profiles of users’ households by making educated guesses about how many people live in the household, what their relationships to each other are, what interests they share and what electronic devices they use. The system would draw on the wealth of information Facebook already has about its users — including their photos, comments, messaging history and web browsing activities — and could be used to help target ads, according to the patent application. “Without such knowledge of a user’s household features, most of content items that are sent to the user are poorly tailored to the user and are likely ignored,” says the patent application, which was filed last year and made public Thursday. The software would analyze images posted to Instagram or Facebook. (Even users who never upload photos still can be tagged in other users’ photos.) To help determine whether people live in the same home, the patent application says, the software could look at how often people are tagged in pictures together and at the photos’ captions. The software would not be limited to using photos that include everyone in the household; rather, the patent application shows, it would take into account pictures of individuals and pairs. 88

The application indicates Facebook could also incorporate “past posts, status updates, friendships, messaging history, past tagging history” and web browsing history to put together a profile of a household or family. Those profiles, in turn, could be made available to third parties that want to target “content” to users, it says. Facebook declined to comment Friday on the details of the patent application but said that applying for the patent does not necessarily mean it will build or use the software. “We’ve often sought patents for technology we never implement, and patents should not be taken as an indication of future plans,” a Facebook representative said in a statement. The Menlo Park, Calif., company, which has struggled this year to maintain the public’s trust in the security of its platform, rolled out a device this month that will help it gather more information about people in their homes called Portal, which has smart-speaker functions and is optimized for video chatting. In the past, Facebook contracted with thirdparty data brokers such as Acxiom and Experian to offer ad targeting based on users’ family makeup, income levels and other data. It stopped that practice in March, however, after the revelation that another third-party firm, Cambridge Analytica, may have violated Facebook policy by sharing and storing Facebook user data. Security concerns have continued. This fall, Facebook disclosed a breach that affected 29

million user accounts; hackers accessed user information including name, gender, language, relationship status, religion, birthday, friend lists, timeline posts and titles of recent conversations. Now there’s concern that the level of predictive analytics proposed in the patent application would introduce additional problems in that vein. “This is what I would call a classic case of secondary use,” said Pam Dixon, founder and executive director of the World Privacy Forum. “Someone is signing up to Facebook, or Instagram for that matter, to post photos or maybe keep in touch with old college friends. I don’t think people intend to have all their relational outlines queried and mapped by Facebook and used for purposes that people aren’t expecting.” Based on a profile of a household of seven children, Facebook could make economic inferences, for instance, Dixon said. She also said that using artificial intelligence to analyze pictures of a family could run the risk of drawing false conclusions based on ethnicity or gender. “Today, Facebook allows people to target ads based on information that is available already about you. It’s just on a fact basis,” Dixon said. “But with this (proposed system), it’s traditional data broker predictive analytics. It puts people in categories based on who Facebook predicts them to be. This is where we enter the realm of unfairness and potential bias and discrimination. Photo by Glen Carrie on Unsplash.

PRODUCTIVITY HACKS From a CEO with ADHD

By Fast Company

When Peter Shankman was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity dis-order (ADHD) in his thirties, he finally understood why he'd been going to such extreme lengths to achieve a heightened focus, including skydiving and triathlons. In his popular podcast, Faster Than Normal, he interviews ADHD experts and discusses how he's learned to use his unique brain wiring to professional advantage as an entrepreneur, angel investor, and author of four books. Some of his tactics may seem extreme: When Shankman was two weeks from a book deadline in 2014, he bought a $5,000 round-trip businessclass ticket to Tokyo, hopped on the flight the next day, and returned home 30 hours later with a finished draft. But many of his approaches can apply to anyone, whether they have ADHD (and $5,000 to spare) or not. Here are Shankman's tips for boosting your productivity, from his most recent book, Faster Than Normal: Turbocharge Your Focus, Productivity, and Success With the Secrets of the ADHD Brain. 1. Banish desk chaos. "A clean environment keeps the mind clean and sharp," Shankman says. 2. Ask for deadlines. If your boss says it's okay for you to turn in something "when you can," it may be tempting to accept that leeway. But an open-ended assignment can be harder to prioritize. "Pick a date for everything you want to accomplish and set it in stone," Shankman recommends. 3. Make a night-before plan. Work backward to map out how you'll prepare for an event or meeting. That can include getting enough sleep the night before and choosing an outfit. Since Shankman wakes up at 3:45 a.m. to exercise, he simplifies his morning routine by sleeping in his workout clothes. 4. Delegate where you can. Hiring an assistant to manage your calendar isn't in everyone's budget. Try a virtual assistant instead, or organize your life with tools like Calendly and Wunderlist. "There's so much good help out there that doesn't cost a lot of money," Shankman says. 5. Compartmentalize tasks. Carve out time for just one thing, and stick to that until you're done. 6. Make rituals—not resolutions. Most people struggle to keep resolutions, so Shankman suggests making rituals, the holy grail for people with ADHD. "The trick is to constantly focus on both how you feel when you do it and how you feel 90

when you don't," he writes. If you want to wake up earlier, zero in on the feeling of having a more productive day. 7. Find your routine. Schedule calls or field emails during the same block of time every day. "Change is great when you're trying to be creative, but not so much when you need to focus," Shankman says. 8. Plan for the unexpected. Staying productive during stretches of "deep work" isn't typically a problem. It's the 15 minutes between meetings-the "short-burst downtime"--that can throw a wrench into your day. Use that time to text a friend or meditate.

9. Find your people. Surround yourself with folks who can support you and hold you accountable. "I don't care how you find these people, but make sure that one or more of them are smarter than you, one or more are older, one or more are younger, and one or more are not as smart (so that you can give back)," Shankman says. 10. Remember the finish line. Every time you take on a new task, identify the "essential problem." Then "break it down into manageable pieces, employ the strategies you've learned, and get it done." 5 WAYS TO HIDE YOUR NERVES WHEN GIVING A SPEECH Feeling anxious? Follow these tips for the perfect speech

By Anett Grant

What’s the reaction you have when you see a speaker who’s nervous? Chances are, you probably catch the feeling, feel their suffering, and cringe at the thought that it could be you. Then you’ll probably start hoping that it will never be you. Fear is a powerful emotion and is extremely contagious. It’s normal to be anxious when you’re giving a speech. You don’t necessarily need to fight it. You just need to manage it so that it comes through in your demeanor. Here are the five tools you can use to hide your nerves when you’re giving a speech. 1) BREATHE Everything starts with self-awareness. Understand how loudly you breathe–whether you gasp or sigh, your listeners will notice the breath you take before you speak. The best way to do this is to focus on the exhale. Under pressure, your nervousness drives you to want more. A big breath is good, and a bigger breath is even better. Think about controlling your breath like taking a sip of air–the less air you have to hold, the less sound you’ll make when you breathe. 2) PACE YOURSELF When speakers get nervous, they accelerate into a fast-paced delivery that showcases a hyper level of intensity. But this kind of rapid-fire delivery is incredibly jarring to the audience, and they might end up focusing on that feeling rather than the substance of your message. The best way to keep the focus on your message is to get into a relaxed rhythm. To discover what this means for you, notice your pace next time you walk–what feels comfortable? Then start talking–mentally if you’re in the streets with lots of people, or out loud if you’re alone in the woods. Let your speaking connect with your walking, and notice how your sentence structure changes. Pay attention to when you pause and what patterns naturally emerge when you let your movement drive your sentence structure. By taking this whole body approach to your speaking, you’ll discover the control that comes from grounding your speech in your natural rhythm. It’s a small exercise that can make a big difference. 3) MOVE FROM YOUR CENTER When speakers get nervous, they often tighten their bodies and move their hands with floppy movements from their wrists and elbows, kind of like the flippers of a penguin. Their body is rigid. To control these nervous gestures, you have to add more by moving from your core–not just your arms. To experience the feeling, next time you stand, raise your arms to the ceiling. Raise them as high 92

as you can go, then raise them even higher. To get that last inch, you’ll have to lift with your whole body. This movement allows your full energy to flow through your entire body, which makes you appear calm and collected on the outside– regardless of what you’re feeling on the inside. 4) STRETCH YOUR VOWELS When speakers get nervous, they often compress their sounds. Think of that commercial where you put all those clothes in a bag, suck out all the air, and cram it all in one small carry-on-size suitcase. Nervous speakers compress their sounds, which becomes more clipped. Staccato sounds, scratchy sounds, mumbling sounds all make it difficult for the audience to understand what you’re saying– especially if you are on a conference call or video chat. In this instance, the worst thing you can do is to focus on articulation. When you focus on articulation, you concentrate on consonants. But consonants clip sounds even more, so your speaking becomes compressed and choppy. The key is to focus on stretching out your vowels, slurring your sounds together. By focusing

on stretching out your vowels, you’ll sound sharp and clear. You’ll project confidence outward even though you may be quivering inside. 5) STAND SOLID When speakers get nervous, they often sway from side to side. This makes their bodies seem unweighted, fragile, like a vase on a table tipping from side to side and about to fall over. To avoid this impression, put one foot slightly ahead of the other– shoulder width apart. Now, take a knee bend. As you come up, feel the connection with the floor and stand solid. Of course, you can move from time to time– but make sure you remain solid. This allows you to project outer strength, no matter how weak-kneed you feel on the inside. Sometimes, eliminating nerves before a big talk seems impossible. But just because you might feel those emotions on the inside, you can still take actions to project strength and confidence on the outside. Start by adopting these five techniques. Over time, you might just find that you no longer have to fight your anxieties, because they’re no longer there. Photo by Matthias Wagner on Unsplash.

The crew is very respectful and consider me as a family member and I get to do one the things that I love - trying food! It’s been spectacular so far. 3. Probably PICK, since my friends enjoy light food and they have a huge menu to choose from. If not that, I'd choose Zafran. 4. I love overly dramatic TV shows, so probably The Vampire Diaries or Pretty Little Liars. As for food, I might get Chocolateness so it can last me the an entire binge session. Or, if I'm craving something savory that day, I’d go for Rock House Sliders, which is definitely a favorite of mine. 5. At night usually. I enjoy food at the later hours of the night. 6. I'd really like to create a dish called Chocolate Heaven. It would be on Dipndips’ menu. It would probably be an oven-baked brownie with Nutella in its center, topped with ice cream and kinder pieces. The chocolate would be melting hot but the ice cream would balance it out. That would be heavenly... 7. Most of my friends already are Talabat Ambassadors, but I'd really like to see Noorthatbakes join the family. 8. I’d choose Triple A Cafe, Slice Doner, and PICK.

IS AUTHENTICITY OVERRATED? Here’s why it’s better to temper your authentic self at work By Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic

We often hear that the most important thing in life, and particularly in our careers, is to be true to ourselves. Although few have bothered explaining what this actually means, this advice highlights a number of related popular ideas, such as: • Don’t worry so much about what other people think of you. • If you think you are great, you probably are. • Just be yourself. Spending too much time or energy thinking about what others expect of you leads to mindless conformity. • Follow your intuition. It’s likely a better moral compass than any other, socially fabricated, cultural rule. This list of examples could go on, but you get the picture. Authenticity, in its purest form, celebrates the uncensored expression of our natural self. Be yourself and all your problems will go away. You’ll be happier and more successful in whatever you do. In contrast, if you adjust your behavior to fit what others want, you will betray your own values and fail to stand out from the crowd. Although there’s an unquestionable appeal to the idea that success may not require any social inhibitions, and that others will celebrate and respect the unfiltered and uninhibited version of ourselves, reality couldn’t be more different. In fact, large-scale scientific studies show that people who are more likely to enjoy higher levels of psychological well-being, interpersonal effectiveness, and career success (including being effective leaders) are actually strong impression managers. In other words, they pay a lot of attention to how others perceive them and successfully adjust their behavior to create a favorable reputation with others. That’s what academic psychologists call “emotionally intelligent” people. In comparison, people who fail to self-censor or control their behavior in social situations by conforming to the “just be yourself” rule are more likely to be psychopathic, according to science. And while some of those people are able to get away with it and be perceived as charismatic and likable by others, those impressions are generally short-lived. Being true to your values may not be advantageous to others. For example, many brutal dictators and despotic rulers such as Stalin, Hitler, and Mao, were arguably true to their values and principles, yet this type of psychological authenticity came at the expense of millions of people. Although extreme, it’s easy to see that some values are better than others, and there’s little point in rewarding people for being true to their values when they have detrimental consequences for others. 96

This is why any civilized society expects citizens to exercise restraint and self-control in the interests of the collective. From obeying traffic rules to standing in line, paying taxes, and keeping public spaces clean, all prosocial acts require a certain degree of impulse control and the realization that one’s own interests are actually secondary to the interests of others. The public glorification of nonconformists and disruptors can only be justified by acknowledging that no system or society can function unless the majority of individuals obey and follow rules. That, by definition, relegates disruptors to the minority. The fact that this sounds controversial, if not heretic, is a testimony to the subliminal power of those norms, and our own belief that we are more unique and special than others, and that others may somehow value our uniqueness more than they actually do. There are no doubt some people who like you for who you really are, in the sense that they have learned to tolerate–maybe even love–the most unfiltered and uncensored version of you. But I would guess that they are just a few individuals. For

the vast majority of people who interact with you, and especially those in your professional life, it’s better to disguise your natural self, at least to begin with. Outside your intimate circle of family and friends, you have to earn the right to be yourself– and some people would still prefer that you don’t. That said, there are clearly some benefits to seeming authentic in the eyes of others, regardless of whether you actually are or not. This other type of authenticity is far more important than its self-centered version. As long as you behave in socially desirable ways, or display culturally valued traits, it’s a bonus to also be seen as genuine or spontaneous. Here’s the bottom line: You are generally better off coming across as likable, which will generally require some effort, restraint, and attention to what others expect and want to see. Seeming authentic in the process is the cherry on top of the cake, but it requires a fair amount of faking.

A SMARTER BOT

Robotics pioneer Anki gave its new toy an AI mind of its own By Sean Captain

Since its founding in 2010 by three Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute grads, Anki has been at the forefront of realizing our robot-in-the-home reality—through disarmingly adorable toys. The company's two-year-old Cozmo (KD 54.77), a manic little bulldozer bot that drives around and plays simple games, was the best-selling toy, by revenue, on Amazon in the U.S., U.K., and France in 2017, according to analysis by One Click Retail, and helped Anki bring in nearly $100 million (KD 3 million) in revenue last year. This year, Anki is releasing the KD 76 Vector. The palm-size bot looks like Cozmo, but inside it's entirely different. The company spent years imbuing Vector with a humanlike ability to react and engage with both its environment and people. It's designed for play--and a whole lot more. "We've always known that this is not a toy company," says cofounder and CEO Boris Sofman. Processing power Vector's brain, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chip, allows the bot to run a neural network that's being trained to understand the world around it; online updates will further deepen its visual intelligence. The big achievement for launch: Vector detects people, even when faces aren't visible. A subtle personality Vector responds to stimulation, such as conversation and eye contact, and picks up on smaller cues: peripheral movement, noises, or lights turning on and off. Anki uses an online natural-language processing service to translate more complex human commands. These inputs feed into an emotional graph that determines how Vector should "feel" in any given situation and allows it to improvise a response. Hearing aids Vector has a four-microphone array on top, allowing it to discern the direction of sounds and react to simple voice commands. When connected to WiFi, Vector can display weather information, set a timer, and offer spoken answers to questions like, "What is the capital of Idaho?" In the future, it could be used as a voice control for connectedhome devices. Cartography capability Using an infrared laser scanner, Vector builds a digital representation of its environment through a process called simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Drop sensors allow it to drive across a tabletop, say, and stop just before the

edge. "We want him to be inquisitive, to map his environment," says Meghan McDowell, Anki's director of program management. Windows to the soul Vector's cartoon eyes, represented on a 184-by-96pixel screen, appear to scan its surroundings and

respond to commands by opening and closing. The robot actually sees via a 720p wide-angle video camera mounted just below the screen. If the bot makes eye contact with a human, it becomes animated, making its signature gibberish sounds or raising its "arms" for a fist-bump.

AN APP TO SAVE A LIFE This teen, who attempted suicide seven times, builds apps that saved her life and others By Jessica Guynn

Sitting alone in a lifeguard tower watching the sun sink below the horizon, Amanda Southworth had a decision to make. This Los Angeles teen, gripped by depression and anxiety, could continue on as she had, not eating, addicted to painkillers and attempting repeatedly to kill herself, or she could grab a lifeline and use her love of coding to save her own life and others. On that chilly summer evening in 2015, she hatched the idea for anxietyhelper, a mobile app that offers the resources she herself needed, and embarked on a journey of healing and recovery that has led to a career in the tech world. "I can honestly say that technology has saved my life," said Southworth. She says she hasn't harmed herself or attempted suicide since. "When I found something greater than myself, I realized that I am not just a person with a life. I am a person who has something to contribute." Now 16, she's dropped out of high school and last month started her own company –but not the way most young technology entrepreneurs do. Astra Labs is a software nonprofit funded by donors and a $25,000 grant from the TOMS Social Entrepreneurship Fund. Southworth's commitment to creating mobile apps and other software that help others was reinforced last month. The deaths of designer Kate Spade and chef and television host Anthony Bourdain were grim reminders of the toll of suicide, the tenth-leading cause of death in the United States and one of three that is increasing, particularly for teens. Southworth estimates she's been mentally ill for more than half her life. She says she attempted suicide at least seven times. The bottom fell out when, as a nerdy kid, she moved to a new town for middle school, where she had no friends and felt like an outsider. Southworth used to send her future self emails that reflected her feelings of isolation and worthlessness: "I hope you're not alive to get this email." She daydreamed at school about killing herself. She'd wake up in the morning and cry that she was still alive. What saved her: a sixth-grade robotics club in 2011 which introduced her to the possibilities of technology and inspired her to soak up knowledge about web development and artificial intelligence from the Internet and textbooks. Her first app, anxietyhelper, a mental health resource guide, debuted in the app store in September 2015 during her ninth-grade Latin class. Her excited classmates downloaded it and she finished the day with18 users. Even that small achievement gave her belief in her own power and a sense of purpose, Southworth says.

100

"I was always very destructive toward myself. Coding is the opposite. It's about creating. It's about taking different characters on a keyboard and transforming them into something bigger than you," she said. In May 2017, she launched a mobile app called Verena after friends were bullied in the tense political climate around the presidential election. Verena, which means protector in German, locates hospitals, shelters and police stations and users can create a list of contacts to be alerted in an emergency. "Everything in my life has shown me that both good and bad things in this world will continue to happen and that's out of our control. But it's what we do with the things that happen to us that can make all of the difference," she said in a TedX talk last November in Pasadena, Calif. "My name is Amanda Southworth, I'm 15 years old, a junior in high school and I'm still alive." Building apps relieves stress and helps her cope and problem solve, she says. And helping others has helped her heal herself. "The more I work, the more I do what I love, the better I feel," she said. Until she started Astra Labs, Southworth bootstrapped her apps, working random tech jobs.

The apps are free, and she runs no ads and does not collect user data. "My core philosophy is that people should not have to pay for something if their life would be ended without it," she said. Three more apps are in the works: one to help turn handwritten class notes into study guides and practice tests, another to help people follow political and social issues they care about and a third that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to help those with schizophrenia determine when they are experiencing hallucinations. People come up to Southworth and say: Your app stopped me from killing myself. One user told her the app helped her after a rape. A facilitator at a tech summit confided that if her friend had had the Verena app, that person might still be alive. Stories of suicide, like that of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, whose music helped Southworth through dark passages in her life, still haunt her. "Maybe if I worked a little harder on this," she said. "I could have gotten help to him or to someone else thinking about suicide." Photo by Sydney Sims on Unsplash.

WHAT KIND OF SELF-DESTRUCTIVE PERFECTIONIST ARE YOU? Spurred perhaps by social media, more people are classified as perfectionists By Stephanie Vozza

Perfectionism is on the rise in younger generations, according to a study published in the Psychological Bulletin. Researchers from the University of Bath and York St. John University in the U.K. measured three types: 1. Self-oriented, the irrational desire to be perfect. 2. Socially prescribed, perceiving excessive expectations from others. 3. Other-oriented, placing unrealistic standards on others. Between 1989 and 2016 self-oriented perfectionism increased by 10%, socially prescribed increased by 33%, and other-oriented increased by 16%. “Perfectionism is a pretty rampant problem,” says time management expert Julie Morgenstern, author of Never Check E-Mail In the Morning: And Other Unexpected Strategies for Making Your Work Life Work. “It may be worse in an era of social media where everybody’s posting the most curated, best, perfect lives and achievements. We’re constantly surrounding by the best way, the perfect way, the right way in our personal and our work lives.” Seeking perfection can create paralysis that hurts productivity, says Morgenstern. “You procrastinate to distract yourself from a big scary task,” she says. “You can end up wasting so much time, beating yourself up later. That insecurity undermines your confidence.” 104

Another hidden cost of perfectionism is that it’s much harder to delegate. “No one can do it as perfectly as you can,” says Morgenstern. “Or you procrastinate and do things at the last minute so that it’s too late to delegate. You can’t build a team if you can’t delegate.” SELECTIVE PERFECTIONISM Instead Morgenstern suggests selective perfectionism, choosing when a task is worth an effort that’s above and beyond and when it’s not. “The biggest obstacle for the perfectionist is letting good enough be good enough,” she says. “A perfectionist doesn’t even know what it means to not be perfect. They don’t know what good enough is. It’s an all-or-nothing way of evaluating things. Work is amazing or a disaster.” To get past the pursuit of perfect and find a balance, Morgenstern suggests using a technique called “Max, Mod, Min.” Before you start a task, write out the maximum you could do for that task, the minimum you could do, and the moderate–a happy medium of the two. “This allows you to break black-and-white thinking,” she says. “You can find options to rightsize an approach for any task or circumstance. Defining three levels of performance for a task builds edges that help you move forward.” For example, if you have to write a report, define the max, the min, and the mod results. For the max, you could write a report that covers all angles,

includes a variety of sources, the latest research, the history of the subject and more. The max approach might take hours, days, or even months to finish. To take a min approach, you could use the information you have, frame it into a template, and call it done. This level would take the least amount of time and effort. Finally, taking the mod approach would involve adding one or two elements above the minimum. Deciding which approach is the best will depend on the project or task. In some cases it’s the maximum, others will be the minimum, and the majority will likely fall in the moderate category. “The act of defining three levels of performance works a muscle that perfectionists need to learn to build,” says Morgenstern. “Knowing you always have options is amazingly liberating.” USING THE APPROACH AS A LEADER Start the practice with yourself and then your team, Morgenstern suggests. Defining three levels helps managers and employees have a clear understanding of expectations. “You don’t want an employee to deliver a 15-page PowerPoint when you wanted a memo,” says Morgenstern. “When you give someone an assignment, talk about the levels of performance, and choose the right fit. It gets you out of the mud, enabling you to see more than one really good way to get something done.”

THE COMPLICATED AND TROUBLED HISTORY OF THE ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REVIEW In the end, does it really motivate? By Lydia Dishman

“Yay, it’s time for my annual performance review!” said no worker ever. While the yearly assessment handed down from manager to staffer has become something for both parties to dread (and prompted some companies to abolish it entirely) the approach to appraise workers’ progress has a long history that’s ranged from practical to problematic. There is no definitive source that points to the very first performance review. Some suggest that the Industrial Revolution’s focus on worker productivity may have contributed to formalizing a standard for judging how well people did their jobs based on their output alongside machines like the cotton gin and the spinning jenny. If so, that’s a dark part of the annual review’s history, as it can’t be separated from slave and child labor and the unsafe working conditions that plagued factory workers before unions were organized to protect them. Flash-forward to WWI and WWII, when the military started using metrics, first to identify and dismiss poor performers and then to rank enlisted soldiers based on their potential to ascend to leadership. In between the wars, in 1927, Elton Mayo, an Australian-born psychologist, implemented a socioeconomic experiment that studied the female employees of the Hawthorne Works factory of the Western Electric Company in Cicero, Illinois. Their productivity was measured by changes in their hours, wages, rest periods, lighting conditions, organization, and degree of supervision and consultation to see what would affect the way they did their jobs. They found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that performance wasn’t tied to money, but to the fact that someone was paying attention to their conditions. But that finding was short-lived, at least according to Peter Capelli and Anna Tavis. They reported in Harvard Business Review: By the 1940s, about 60% of U.S. companies were using appraisals to document workers’ performance and allocate rewards. By the 1960s, it was closer to 90%. Though seniority rules determined pay increases and promotions for unionized workers, strong merit scores meant good advancement prospects for managers. THEORY X AND Y At first, they observed, giving feedback that focused on improving performance was an afterthought. But along came social psychologist Douglas McGregor, whose Theory X and Theory Y would change the approach to assessments. While Theory X suggested that no one really wants to work and 106

therefore they need strict supervision, Theory Y holds that employees should be trusted and empowered. It was a radical departure of viewing workers and leadership. As such, managers and their staff were seen in a collaborative way and performance could be positively influenced by encouraging development. “The limits on human collaboration in the organizational setting are not limits of human nature but of management’s ingenuity in discovering how to realize the potential represented by its human resources,” McGregor concluded. THE RISE OF MIDDLE MANAGERS By the 1960s, General Electric and other companies embraced this approach to the performance review and began implementing developmental feedback. However, when companies started to feel the crunch of inflation in the 1970s, they resumed appraising people in order to scale back merit raises. And under Jack Welch’s leadership, GE started ranking employees to promote top performers and pink-slip those who were just coasting. As the decades passed, with more middle management having more direct reports at larger companies, the investment in individual performance reviews started to get out of hand. For example, by 2015 a report from the Harvard Business Review revealed that at Deloitte it took 1.8 million hours across the firm. And at CEB, managers reported 210 hours for appraisals (that translates to 5 weeks per year). Adobe

scrapped the practice after calculating that 2,000 managers were in for some 80,000 hours when dealing with performance reviews. Talk about a counterproductive way to spend the workday. But it wasn’t just the hours that put the performance review on deathwatch. As Capelli and Tavis noted, research proved that workers “would rather be told they were ‘average’ than given a 3 on a 5-point scale.” Researchers at Kansas State University, Eastern Kentucky University, and Texas A&M also looked at how negative feedback during annual performance reviews affected employees and (shocker) it didn’t help them improve. But surprisingly, even positive feedback got misconstrued and failed to motivate. As for the future of the performance review, the bad news is that it’s not totally going away. But as Capelli and Tavis point out, there is a better way. “Ideally, conversations between managers and employees occur when projects finish, milestones are reached, challenges pop up, and so forth– allowing people to solve problems in current performance while also developing skills for the future,” they write. “At most companies, managers take the lead in setting near-term goals, and employees drive career conversations throughout the year.” Sounds like a much more productive and empowering way for everyone to spend their time. 4 MYTHS ABOUT THE SKILLS GAP THAT WILL HOLD YOUR COMPANY BACK On adjusting hiring expectations By Stephanie Vozza

When it comes to competing in the workplace of the future, 80% of executives are worried about the availability of key skills, according to PwC’s (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) 21st CEO Survey. This fear has led companies to invest more resources in training and recruiting, but concerns about the skills gap won’t be resolved if you rely on outdated training methods and hiring expectations, says David Blake, coauthor of The Expertise Economy: How The Smartest Companies Use Learning To Engage, Compete, and Succeed. “Companies conflate knowledge and skills,” he says. “There is no distinction made, and everything is thrown into a bucket called ‘training.’ If companies really want to help employees gain new skills, there has to be a basic understanding of what learning is really all about.” COLLEGES WILL SOLVE THE SKILLS GAP Some leaders argue that colleges aren’t graduating students who are ready for the workforce. This may be true, but if CEOs and business leaders are relying on a “hire only” strategy to get talent with the skills they need for their future, they will have to think again, says Blake. “We’ve shifted away from a world where information is scarce and where it was the job of higher education to gather that information and make it accessible for learning by bringing the best minds and best books to single campus,” he says. “Students who are graduating have been taught a lot of eternal principles, but they’re not being taught what to do in a world with organizations swimming in data.” Even the best universities are increasingly failing to prepare students with the skills they need, says Blake. With the education system in transition, individuals need to arm themselves with the skills they need and companies need to look beyond the college degree. “There are fantastic new platforms for people to develop skills, and companies need to move past traditional signals, such as college degrees, to find someone who has those skills, irrespective of how or where they developed them,” says Blake. TRADITIONAL SCHOOL METHODS ARE BEST FOR COMPANY TRAINING In the business world, leaders often believe if there’s a problem, employees must have been lacking information. They solve the problem with lecture-based training designed to transfer knowledge. Employees sit passively and listen, and are quizzed on the topic later. But applying this university-based approach to the workforce isn’t effective, says Blake. “In school, one of the most common questions from students is, ‘Will this be 108

on test?'” he says. “Students may gain sufficient knowledge to pass the exam, but few acquire the skills needed to apply that knowledge.” Companies get similar results. “Employees largely forget most of what they learned and rarely apply classroom knowledge to their work on the job,” he says. “It’s what you do with the knowledge you gain that’s most important.” Instead, companies should implement learning via loop-style training, says Blake. This involves obtaining knowledge through reading or watching a video–whichever method the employee prefers. Next, the employee should practice the skill, get immediate feedback, and reflect on what they hear so they can modify and go through the learning loop again. QUICK LEARNERS ARE SMARTER If you value the ability to be a quick learner and think it means one person is smarter than another, you might be underestimating employees. In his book, The End of Average: How We Succeed in a World That Values Sameness, Todd Rose, director of the Mind, Brain, and Education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education, shares that people often confuse quick learning with intelligence. However, his research shows that in education there is absolutely no correlation

between learning fast and being smart. Instead of rewarding someone who learns quickly to get to the next promotion, celebrate people who take the time to learn deeply enough to become an expert, says Blake. EXTERNAL FACTORS MOTIVATE LEARNING Companies often use external methods as a method for motivating employees to learn. Instead of autonomy and choice, they have a commandand-control method for telling employees what and how they should learn, often called compliance training. Instead of mastery or understanding, employees simply check a box that the training is complete. Instead, companies should tie learning to internal motivators. “Everyone is looking for an answer to why they should care,” says Blake. “Employees want to see their work connected to a larger purpose. It’s, ‘Here are the skills we need and why. Let’s go get them.'” What today’s employees want is the ability to have an impact in their work, the flexibility of when and where they do their work, to see their work connected to a bigger purpose, and to have the opportunity to learn and grow in their careers. DESIGN YOUR NEXT MEETING BACKWARDS

Stop outlining meeting agendas and take these three steps instead By Art Markman

How many times have you gone to a meeting where there was barely a coherent agenda, or none at all? Or one where it wasn’t clear to most of the people in attendance what they were needed there for? Chances are, there was either little meaningful discussion before you all disbanded, or that most of the information you covered couldn’t fit into a simple email. While aggravating, these pointless meetings are avoidable. One way to run better meetings is to borrow a strategy familiar to most university instructors who are responsible for putting together a new curriculum each semester. It’s called “backward design,” and the idea is pretty simple: Start planning your meeting by thinking about the desired outcome, not the content itself. How do you want the people in the meeting to think or behave differently after the meeting is over, compared with how they were before? Answer that first, and only then start thinking about what should go on the agenda. Here’s how. STEP 1: “WHO?” Start with the people who you need to switch up their approach in some form. They’re the ones who need to attend. If someone on your team can continue doing exactly what they’re already doing without impacting your overall success, then they don’t need to be in the meeting.

112

You may need people with particular expertise to help solve a problem. You might need to include someone with the authority to release resources for a project. If you’re unsure whether a particular person should be included, send them a brief note to ask their preference. This way, you minimize the risk of someone feeling excluded if you don’t give them a chance to attend. STEP 2: “HOW?” Next, think through the structure of the meeting itself. You want to make sure you’ll have adequate time to produce the intended outcome among all the necessary attendees. So if there are key discussions that have to happen, make sure you schedule them for early in the meeting; don’t “open the floor” at the very end, after getting “announcements” out of the way first. People often start meetings with several updates on other projects–frequently at a leisurely pace, because the meeting has just started. But by the time you get around to the really important business at hand, those crucial discussions get crammed into whatever time remains. And invariably, a few key stakeholders have to leave early and don’t get a chance to share their input. So lead with the important stuff first and share other announcements only at the end if there’s time. STEP 3: “WHAT?” Chances are people will need key information in order to participate effectively in the meeting. So once you’ve identified the attendees and the structure, summarize

the material that’s going to be up for discussion, then distribute that ahead of time. Your goal isn’t to outline the meeting step by painstaking step, it’s just to make sure everyone begins on the same page. At a bare minimum, send around a brief overview (just a few sentences) of the information participants will need to weigh in, even if they can’t do more preparation than that. The goal here is simply to make the meeting an active, rather than passive, experience. Too often, meeting organizers share reports, slide decks, and dense agendas that don’t ask participants to do anything other than sit back and absorb it all. That makes it hard for attendees to remember the details, let alone take any meaningful actions afterward. So feel free to leave people with a packet of detailed information, but avoid the temptation to go through it all together. And if you have to give project updates, focus on the broad summary and let people interested in the fine details look through the more detailed materials on their own. Finally, it’s up to organizers to keep everyone focused on the end-goal they’ve designed the meeting around in the first place. Meetings can get easily hijacked by people who belabor the point or veer off onto other topics. If anyone raises comments or objections that seem off-topic, just offer to meet with them individually afterward. By starting with the end in mind, you’ll be more likely to hold meetings that actually accomplish what you want them to. As a side bonus, people might even enjoy coming to them. HOW TO BREAK UP WITH THE GRID

Here are ten (probably futile) steps you can take to evade the radar By Jay Woodruff

1. You've seen that 2016 photo of Zuckerberg grinning beside his laptop, right? Hey, if the Crown Prince of Snooping sticks tape over his webcam, what are you waiting for? 2. While you're at it, what good is a laptop webcam sticker when your phone might as well be an ankle monitor? If you're too embarrassed to cover the lens and the mic, spring for a signal-blocking pouch at 10 bucks (KD 3). 3. You get points for coming up with a 12-character password that includes capital letters, symbols, and numbers, but deductions for using it for 30 different sites. You need a password manager, such as LastPass or 1Password. And just to be safe, start using twostep authentication when logging in to sensitive sites, preferably a token that slides into the USB port. 4. Still seeing your screen populated with ads inspired by your last purchase on Amazon? Download a virtual private network or Tor to throw marketers off your scent. 5. The Rolling Stones said it more than 50 years ago: Get 114

off the cloud. Use a password-protected and encrypted thumb drive instead. 6. Alexa's voice was starting to give you the creeps even before you read about that incident where a couple's conversation was recorded and sent to an acquaintance in another state. Between the Echo and Nest and Sonos and that new refrigerator you're almost afraid to open, your house has become way smarter than you: Dumb it back down. 7. Delete your social sites. Your friends all know you're paranoid anyway, and the only Likes you've gotten on your last dozen posts have been from that one guy you barely knew in high school whose feed is a bizarre mix of cat memes and Oath Keeper rants. 8. Destroy your credit cards. Begin making purchases with cash, or on the blockchain. Savor the look on the barista's face when you ask whether she'll accept payments in ethereum. 9. So you've effectively blinded and muted your

smartphone, but the thing is still loaded with apps that can track you when used. Ditch it altogether and go with a burner and a prepaid plan. Invest your data-plan savings in hexamine fuel tablets and a Leatherman multitool knife as you plot your escape from the grid and prepare to fulfill your tiny-home fantasies. 10. Stock your techless '74 Vanagon with plenty of pemmican, a yurt constructed of silver-lined thermalradiation-deflecting fabric, a Rand McNally atlas, your compass, a water-filtration system and camping cistern, a portable manual typewriter, and your copy of Wilderness Survival for Dummies. Oh, and don't forget the bear repellent.

WHY QUITTING YOUR JOB WITHOUT A BACKUP PLAN CAN HELP YOUR CAREER Here are seven instances when it’s the right thing to do By Lisa Evans

Quitting your job is always a scary thing. But it can be downright terrifying when you don’t have another one lined up. The nerves build up to the surface from the moment you hand in your resignation notice. “Where are you going?” is typically the first question your boss and coworkers will ask. Saying you’re not sure will undoubtedly lead to quizzical glances and perhaps even snickers of “you’re crazy.” But here are seven times when quitting with no backup plan is the right thing to do for your career. WHEN YOU’RE WORKING IN A TOXIC ENVIRONMENT If your work environment is so toxic that you aren’t able to see your own strengths and values clearly, getting some distance may be the only way to regain your faith in yourself. “Sometimes you need time to detox and heal from abusive situations so that you don’t jump into something just as bad to get away from your current job,” says Rhonda Ansted, career coach and Founder of Be the Change Career Consulting. YOU HAVE ENOUGH SAVINGS If you’re thinking about leaving your job, start to set aside enough money to tide you over until you find your next opportunity. Work out how long you think it will take you to find your next gig, then calculate how much you’ll need in the bank to stay out of poverty. Leaving your job without any savings in the bank is likely to lead to you feeling forced to take any job out of financial necessity. IF YOU CAN’T JOB SEARCH WHILE WORKING YOUR CURRENT JOB The job search process is very time consuming. Looking for a new job while employed means you can never truly give your all to your search, and you may not have the time to explore all of the opportunities available, never mind booking time off to go to interviews. You may also want to reach out to connections in your industry to find out about new opportunities, but fear reaching out in case news of your job search gets back to your current employer. Erin First, principal at Brick Lane, a boutique PR agency, started applying for jobs and doing interviews while still employed, but felt that dividing her energy between both tasks wasn’t working out. “It didn’t feel fair to the company I was working for, and it would have limited the time I was able to spend charting my next move,” says First, who quit her job without having another one lined up, freeing up her time to do a thorough job search. 116

IF THE STRESS OF STAYING IS GREATER THAN THE ANXIETY OF LEAVING Quitting without a backup plan is not for everyone. “For some people, the fear of the unknown is too difficult to navigate and paralyzing,” says Ansted. “While there are some people who crave novelty and get bored easily in the same-old same-old, much of our hard-wiring is about keeping us safe.” Quitting your job without a backup plan has the same effect on your nervous system as walking into the desert without any water. When you’re unhappy in your job, however, that stress can lead to many worse things than anxiety. Stress can cause sleep deprivation, a heart attack, depression, diabetes, and a host of other illnesses. Assess the toll your unhappiness in your current job is having on your health. If the stress is greater than your anxiety about quitting, jumping ship may be the only way to save your mental and physical health. IF YOU HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM This doesn’t mean you have a trust fund. It means having a group of friends or a career coach who can help you see things clearly when you’re on the other side. Your support system is made up of individuals who know your strengths and can help you find your way after you leave.

IF YOU NEED TIME TO SELF-REFLECT Quitting your job with no plan in place allows you to be open to new opportunities that you may never have considered if you simply took the next opportunity that fell in your lap. When First quit her job, she didn’t plan on becoming a business owner, but after reaching out to a friend for some freelance work, First then found herself the co-owner and partner of a boutique PR agency. “It’s been the most challenging and rewarding work experience of my career,” she says. IF YOU NEED A KICK IN THE PANTS Even when you know you’re in the wrong job, the security of having a steady paycheck makes easing off your job search easy to do. When you suddenly find yourself void of that secure income, it can give you the adrenaline rush you need to propel your job search forward. Jumping ship without a life vest is not an easy decision, but when done for the above reasons, it may be the best way to propel your career forward in the right direction.

bazaar goes dining

A SNEAK PEKO PEKO

Sampling the latest creations by Chefs Abdullah Al Yagout and Tareq Al Yagout

By bazaar staff

Are you feeling a bit peckish? Perhaps if you listen carefully to your belly, you can hear a hungry growl. In Japan, the sound an empty stomach makes is called Peko Peko (isn’t it awesome that there is a word for that feeling?), but you don’t have to be ravenous to want to devour every last bite on offer at the newest and most conceptual of restaurants in the city, Peko Peko. Passion, pleasure and enthusiasm are known to be stimulated with the glow of orange red light in color therapy, and the restaurant itself is stripped bare of any excessive decoration except for this glow of the neon one-of-a-kind eponymous sign stretched overhead and hanging above the diners. Painted brick walls with a visible vent pipe keep the interior minimally industrial and deliberately so, the only thing you have to focus on is the food. Like the dishes themselves, the concept of this restaurant is multilayered, nuanced and extremely well thought out, but the aesthetic of simplicity is deceiving. Be prepared for a gastronomic sensation when you eat here, it’s not only the colored light that will stimulate you but also the careful curation of the menu. The idea of creating an east-Asian concept came about because the Chefs loved to cook this kind of food but did not want to be limited by a themed restaurant. They were determined to have the freedom to play around and offer the highest quality experience which means a fluid, Chef-driven menu that is subject to change. They wanted to explore their own take on various dishes from across Asia while incorporating influences from their own culture, experiences, travel and training. Both Chefs are graduates from Cordon Bleu with Abdullah training in Paris and Tokyo and Tareq meriting a two-year Grand Diploma degree from Cordon Bleu London followed by professional training in London. The Chefs have learned to execute a number of complicated and advanced culinary techniques which are then presented in what looks to be the simplest of dishes but the experimental flavor profiles combined with the perfect textures for each dish will have you exclaiming delight with each mouthful. To start with came the Baby Gem Salad. This seems to be a millennial favorite, searing lettuce, but with good reason. The char is beautifully offset by the citrus sweet of the mandarin segments and the sharpness of the apple ginger dressing all working together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The picture keeps building and the grill keeps working its wonders with the Avocado Corn Salad. We deliberately didn’t toss this salad to try the full flavor of the Hikiri Lemon Yogurt dressing. Piece of advice: delve under the baby arugula and go straight to the bottom layer with a spoon and make sure you 118

have plenty kernels of corn on there too to get the full taste sensation. This salad is beyond moreish. You'll discover that most of the dishes are addictive, because these two cousin Chefs have discovered the art of the sixth taste, Kokumi. Often called 'savory', the sixth taste can be described as “hearty” a depth that comes from, for example, aged cheese or slow roasted meat, boiling broth for 12 hours instead of one or two, delivering greater flavor. Next to sample came the Tuna Tataki, marinated in six spices, seared and rested upon an elegant scraping of labnah and Salmon Carpaccio. Both thinly sliced and delightfully prepared, the beetroot vinaigrette on the salmon keeps it fresh and flavorsome. But the star of the fish dishes has to be Cali-wearing Orange. This bold deconstruction of the California Roll has not a crab stick in sight and replaces the seafood element with instead spicy tuna tartare and seared salmon. The entire thing must be popped into your mouth so you can feel and taste everything at once. It feels like luxury with muted layers of texture, the sushi rice being moist and soft like a team player in the game and not just a surface on which to present the fish. A mini slice of lemon sits atop the concoction like a crown; the flavors are resplendent in this dish and the plate has to be physically removed from the table to stop us eating the lot. We have eight more dishes to try! Three kinds of gyoza arrive beef, prawn and chicken each with its very own distinct recipe. What they all did have in common was the expert way in which the dumplings were first steamed and then fried, not overdone but just right, providing the dumplings with an enjoyable al dente feel. These gyoza must all be tasted to be believed but the most surprising is the chicken. Wrapped up with foie gras, it’s the coconut curry that keeps adding layers of flavor here. The prawn gyoza revels in a creamy lobster stock which is so delicious because of the unlikely addition of rich Parmesan. Next, we tried what can only be described as the Asian equivalent to a classic carbonara. A noodle dish with Karaage style prawns where you cut into a runny fried egg and toss the lot mixing creamy, yolky goodness with the Sichuan cream sauce. Perfectly hearty for colder nights this is pure comfort food. To add a bit of spice to the delights, we were tasting the Koji fermented chicken skewers which woke us up a bit after our noodle-induced coma, with the red chilli salsa packing a punch but with a slow delivery so you feel the warmth envelope, you like the softest of cashmere scarves. We couldn’t refuse the nearest thing Peko Peko has to a burger and even the one bazaarite currently living carb-free took the first bite of the Katsu Sando, which features panko breaded chicken breast nestled on toasted brioche, multi-layered and slathered with a divinely secret sauce. Moving on to dessert; the simply described Fudge Brownie couldn’t be further from the truth. Premium cocoa powder is the base of the richest of chocolate fondant filling you’ve ever tried, topped with a Matcha ice cream that cuts through the sweetness of the brownie. Sweet and bitter, this dessert will please everyone who tries it.

The most controversial of desserts finishes the evening. The scandal comes from the influences that can be faintly detected as you savor each bite, is it crème brulee, bread pudding, is it Om Ali? The Miso Caramel Pudding is the ideal combination of all three, with the burned sugar crack of the topping giving way to a crème Anglaise soaked brioche. This is possibly the most moreish item on the menu and it was hard to not finish it completely despite having eaten our way through most of the Peko Peko dishes on offer. At once delicious, unusual, familiar and yet entirely

new this encompasses all that Peko Peko is about. Conceptualized through a passion for creating dishes that satisfy all the senses, and bazaar is looking forward to experiencing everything these talented Chefs have to offer. The carb-free life can wait, right?

Peko Peko can be found in Kuwait City, follow them on Instagram @eatpekopeko for the latest updates and click on the link in the bio for the Google Maps location. Open daily from 6 pm – 10 pm. 119

THE 600-YEAR-OLD HISTORY OF THE RESUME And its uncertain future

By Lydia Dishman

The next time you are adjusting your resume to add the latest skills and/or job (which experts say should be done early and often), take a moment to give thanks to Leonardo da Vinci. The Renaissance man is often credited with crafting the very first one, years before he began painting the masterworks he’s come to be renowned for. In 1482, around the time he was 30, Da Vinci was looking to land a job with Ludovico Sforza, then de facto ruler of Milan. Sforza wanted to hire military engineers, so Da Vinci wrote a letter to apply. Within the text, he outlined a 10-point list of his abilities that included bridge, cannon, and catapult construction, and water removal from moats, with a small mention of his artistic skills at the end. According to Letters of Note, the document was believed to be written by a professional writer, and not Da Vinci himself. Either way, he did get hired and 10 years later, Sforza commissioned him to paint The Last Supper. Close to 100 years later, Ralph Agas, an English land surveyor, penned a bunch of ads touting his 40 years of experience in the industry as well as his particular skills and projects. Although Agas’s ads were the closest thing to a modern resume, the term resume wasn’t commonly used at this point. The word itself is French and means summary. But there are several different accounts of who actually coined the term to stand for a summary of jobs skills and experience. One predates even Da Vinci, suggesting it evolved in the Middle Ages with English skilled artisan and labor guilds. Wealthy patrons could use the lists to make a targeted hire based on qualifications. Another is that a traveling English lord called his letter of introduction a resume. 1900-1950: A LISTING OF AGE, WEIGHT, AND HERITAGE Several centuries would pass before the resume became useful again. Daniel Howden posits on Workable that it was because “most societies were stratified enough that a career (or the lack of one) was largely dictated by birth and people were meant, in British parlance, to ‘know their place.'” The aftermath of World War I and industrialization started to break down the class structure, and people could seek work beyond their social class. “By the 1930s, a resume was almost normal, although experts warned applicants not to sell themselves for fear of appearing conceited,” Howden writes. “As recently as 1950, your age, weight, and the origin of your parents were

120

considered essential elements of the CV, along with a photo of yourself wearing a suit.” The latter bit was presumably just for men. Almost as soon as it became a widespread and expected part of a job search, the humble handwritten resume was elevated alongside the prevailing technology of the times. In the 1980s, for example, while Microsoft Word and the IBM PC made it much easier to create a professionallooking resume on one’s own, the rise of VHS meant that people could add video portfolios to their resumes. That decade also saw the fax machine emerge as the most popular way to submit resumes. 1990-2010: WHAT THE INTERNET DID TO THE RESUME Of course, everything changed with the introduction of the web and sites like Monster and CareerBuilder that pioneered the digital submission of resumes. But as technology advanced, it became the death knell for the traditional resume. Google’s former head of people Laszlo Bock famously called the resume “terrible” (and not just because the company received some 50,000 of them in a week.) Some experts argue that LinkedIn’s debut hastened the resume’s slide into irrelevance. Since profiles on the platform often include

everything you’d put on a traditional resume, it’s no surprise that 87% of recruiters use LinkedIn to vet candidates during the hiring process. And not only do resumes have to be updated very frequently, but some aspects are problematic, like job titles. “New titles are used every day that didn’t previously exist, and they don’t always give a clear picture of someone’s skill set,” says Carisa Miklusak, CEO of the algorithmic hiring platform tilr. THE FUTURE: NOT DEAD YET But others argue that the resume isn’t dead (or even on life support), it’s just evolving alongside these platforms. “LinkedIn has made certain aspects of the resume irrelevant, including references, because LinkedIn puts such a high priority on personalized recommendations and connections,” according to Emily Gordon, strategic director of recruitment firm Seven Step RPO. The problem is sheer volume and the fact that it’s been proven that hiring managers spend an average of six seconds on one to size up a candidate. This can lead to unconscious bias in the hiring process. No wonder a raft of startups using AI are scrambling to tackle this problem while making the recruiters’ job easier and the jobseekers’ chances of creating a worthy one much better.

BEASTIE BOYS BOOK

ELEVATION

FIRE & BLOOD

by Michael Diamond

by Stephen King

by George R. R. Martin

Formed as a New York City hard core band in 1981, the legendary Beastie Boys struck an unlikely path to global hip hop superstardom. Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band in a book format unlike any other. Adam “ADROCK” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the debut album that became the first hip hop record ever to hit #1, Licensed to Ill—and the album’s messy fallout as the band broke with Def Jam; their move to Los Angeles and rebirth with the genredefying masterpiece Paul’s Boutique; their evolution as original musicians and social activists over the course of the classic albums unforgettable to their fans like Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty and the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits conceived by the late Adam MCA Yauch; and more.

Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the people next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face–including his own—he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart. What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-andwhite illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.

CANDYLAND MEETS WINTER PERFECTION

This holiday season, take your kids to the fantastical world of KidZania! By bazaar staff

There are millions of people who dread the coming of winter. They do not live in Kuwait. Most of us wait for the cooler months when we can do so much more without sweating buckets and melting on the sidewalk. It also coincides with KidZania’s eagerly awaited annual winter festival. It’s the place to be for winter-loving kids (and adults too). All the coziness and winter holiday-cheer without the drawbacks of an actual tough winter. The temperature drops at the same time as kids start getting time off of school for their winter break. And what do you do with walking 126

talking energy bombs? You take them someplace they can run around, be curious and discover the world. But you also want to make sure they are safe, and very much protected from the elements. Every parent in Kuwait knows that KidZania is the best place for a day of fun for children. It’s safe, organized and engaging for kids of all ages. If your children are older, they can be left to roam and explore for hours before they are ready to leave, giving you some treasured freetime to relax or shop around at The Avenues. This year, KidZania brings together two things that kids and adults love, winter and candy! Yup, the theme is double the fun with the Winter Candyland festival. And we’re sure that they’ll be going all out for this one. From candy-themed

activities to re-designed spaces that are going to be a feast for the eyes, the entire interior is going festive with drop lights and hanging candy everywhere. With a Candy Pass your little ones will have exclusive access to the multitude of planned events and activities. Kids can cross the Enchanted Candy Realm to collect rare candy and compete with their friends. Then they can race down the inflatable roller slides at the airport’s entrance. Next, they can don a Velcro suit in the bouncy sticky wall challenge and grab all the different goodies that are available on the wall. They are definitely going to need the energy for braving the Ice Palace. The sub-zero environment is fun for parents and kids and is a great opportunity for those awesome Instagram

worthy pictures. But don’t worry if you can’t get that perfect portrait, you can always visit the bubble room for a professional photo as a souvenir. For more family fun, head on over to the Candyland Treasure Hunt. Find the hidden ginger bread men, giant candy, lollipops and crystals. Even little ones as young as two can have fun in this area. For the tactual and curious, the Toy Factory is a must-visit. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on mechanical activities. There is also a music maker, functional gears and ball-drop games. It has been super exciting so far and your little one might need some time to cool down. The Winter-themed Face Painting station is a great way to get the little ones to sit down for a minute to catch their breath from all the excitement and recharge. And with this artsy experience, they'll be ready for more fun afterwards. This is when they would head to Bekha’s Winter Candyland Adventure, the ultimate performance that will entertain and enthrall everyone, adults and children alike. The story line follows Bekha, princess of Candyland, who has lost her Magical Candy. The brave knight Urbano and Bache will go on an unforgettable adventure to find the stolen Magical Candy, fight through the cold winter to bring back happiness to Candyland. It might all seem like fun and games, which it totally is, but there are a lot of educational opportunities. Kids can take part in the walking rainbow experiment, train for a flash mob, craft their own gingerbread man, or even learn storytelling at the radio station. Before you leave KidZania, don’t forget to decorate your own Ginger Bread House for more festive fun, and while you're at it, snap a picture too and make your friends jealous of all the fun that you are having with your insta-worthy moments. METH LAB II: THE LITHIUM

Gucci Mane seems poised to jump into the fray this fourth quarter with the release of his delayed album Evil Genius. "I’m dropping #EvilGenius Decemburr 7th," Gucci wrote on Twitter. He also shared a handwritten track list for Evil Genius, which includes features from Quavo, 21 Savage, Kevin Gates and Lil Skies. In an interview with Billboard last June, Guwop gave an update about his long-awaited album. "I've been really working on the songs," he said. "You know, I just don't put out anything. I'm trying to make this project one of my best projects ever.’’

XXXTentacion's team is gearing up to release his first posthumous album Skins, which is slated to arrive this month. X's estate also shared the first single off the project with the compact "Bad!". Prior to his tragic death in June, the "Sad!" artist was reportedly working on two albums at the time. In addition to Skins, Jahseh started prepping a project under the title of Bad Vibes Forever. Even though there hasn't been much insight provided to the possible release of BVF, listeners can expect even more posthumous content to drop before 2018's out.

It's been three years since Method Man dropped The Meth Lab, but the Wu-Tang Clan member is now ready to share it's sequel, The Meth Lab II: Lithium. Meth's sixth studio album will include 22 tracks and will feature guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Redman, Sheek Louch and more, as well as fellow Wu-Tang members Raekwon, Cappadonna and Masta Killa. With a career that dates back to the early 1990s, Method Man hasn't lost a step in his rapping and proved that earlier this year when he stopped by DJ Whoo Kid's The Whoolywood Shuffle and spit a freestyle.

Six years, two newborns and one hit Las Vegas residency later, the Backstreet Boys are plotting their return with 10th studio album DNA. "After 25 years, to be played on the radio and get as much love as ("Heart") has gotten, is still overwhelming," says AJ McLean, who makes up one-fifth of the band with Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough. "We feel extremely blessed to know that the past 5-7 years of us doing everything we can to rebuild the brand and get us back to this place has definitely paid off."

In classic Trainor fashion, Treat Myself is a bass-driven, fun-loving album that is the perfect soundtrack to any night out. The shimmering title tune is a declaration of self-love that features the wholesome, infectious refrain, "Let me give myself a hand," over top of melodic keyboard runs. The Grammy award-winning singer has used the song to team up with Target for the "Back to School" campaign. First teased via online promos fueled by the instrumental, TV commercials flaunting the lyrics and hook hit the air on Sunday, July 22.

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of The Dandy Warhols. To celebrate, the Portland rockers have announced the release of their 10th studio album Why You So Crazy. Described as a return to their “freewheeling fashion”, the new album features 12 songs that pack in “references as far flung as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Don MacLean’s Chevy, and the church of Bowie’s ‘Modern Love’.” In anticipation of its release, the band has unlocked a singleshot 360° short film of new single “Be Alright”, which features Mad Men’s Jessica Paré.

ASTRO ELROY PASSENGER DRONE

TECHNOIMPULSE ROCKET Z SUV

JETSURF RACE TITANIUM MOTORIZED SURFBOARD

NORTH FOCALS AUGMENTED REALITY EYEGLASSES

2019 SEA-DOO FISH PRO WATERCRAFT

Lighter, faster, stronger, the third generation of BMW Motorrad's liter bike, the S 1000 RR, promises to be the best yet. BMW aimed to best the previous generation's performance by a second, and with an all-new engine and suspension, it looks like they've reached their goal. The new 999cc inline-four gains eight horsepower, pushing output to 207, with a smoother torque curve throughout the rev range thanks to BMW's ShiftCam variable valve tech. A brand new suspension with revised geometry increases the load-bearing capability of the engine that also allows for a lighter frame and components, helping the S 1000 RR drop 25 pounds of weight.

Developed in collaboration with world-renowned big wave surfers the latest board from JetSurf has a hull constructed from 100% carbon fiber. It's also motorized, with a two-stroke 100cc engine that allows you to ride for up to 45 minutes at full throttle while burning less than one gallon of fuel. Designed for racers and big wave surfers, the board can go from 0 to 37mph in just 2.8 seconds and features three perfectly shaped fins just below the exhaust for incredibly quick, sharp turns.

If you could hop into a passenger drone every morning, you might look forward to your daily commute. Astro's Elroy offers a completely autonomous flight and is built with a full carbon body and wide cabin glass for a 360° surround view. Passengers input their destination using a touchscreen interface, and a secure 4G network does the rest. The drone is equipped with 17 rotors that provide a top speed of 43mph, while the electric motor is designed to run quiet and emission-free while you pass all the poor suckers sitting in traffic. Elroy can carry two passengers and is small enough to fit into most garages.

If smart eyewear can achieve mainstream success, it might be through this new release from North Focals. Their augmented reality eyewear is without a screen and instead rely on light that filters through a holographic lens with a display that appears at arm's length. Focals come with a paired ring you wear on your index finger called the Loop that has a tiny joystick that allows you to click through texts, Slack messages, or turn-by-turn navigation. A custom version of Amazon's Alexa is also included.

Russia is home to some of the harshest terrain on the planet and it takes a special breed of SUV to traverse it. Technoimpulse's Rocket Z isn't fast but can get you and eight of your friends or coworkers nearly anywhere you need to go. Powered by a 100 horsepower diesel engine, the Rocket Z has almost no front or rear overhang for steep approach angles, massive tires, and a winch if you do get hung up — or need to get something out the way. Limited slip differentials on both axles keep the power down, and Hella lighting equipment turns night into day — even in places where the sun never rises in the winter.

For as long as there have been jet skis, people have used them for fishing. So it's surprising it's taken this long for one to be built specifically for that purpose. The 2019 Sea-Doo Fish Pro Watercraft includes a host of modifications specific to the sport. Those include a Garmin navigation and fish finder system, an extended rear platform with integrated 51L cooler, four innovative rod holders, and a bench seat with angled footrest. In addition, while the Rotax 1503 NA engine is speedy on open water, it also has a special Slow Mode for easy trolling.

MINIMAL CALENDAR

FEEDLY LAB (BETA)

HAWKEYE ACCESS EYE-TRACKING BROWSER

FIREFOX REALITY BROWSER

ASSISTANT SHORTCUTS

HIRE BY GOOGLE

There can not be much confusion with this app when you see its name on the app store-it is exactly what it says it is. Minimal Calendar is a phone calendar stripped down to its basics, rendered in gorgeous clean typography. The current year, month, and day are labeled with red type, while everything else is black, set against a white background. It supports basic functions like adding and editing of events, plus helpful reminders, and integrates with Apple iCloud, Google, Exchange, and all iOS supported calendars.

People with motor impairments may not have the easiest time controlling their phones with their fingers, and lord knows Siri can't do everything. Hawkeye Access is a new ARKit-based app that lets you control things using nothing but your eyes. After a brief calibration process, you'll be dropped into an interface with a cursor that moves around the screen with your gaze. Smile or blink to click, stare into the bottom, sides, and corners to navigate, and use your voice to enter search queries. Currently, the app contains a web browser with quick links to services like YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram.

Assistant Shortcuts is a button re-mapper app. It lets you re-map almost any button on your device to do a variety of different things. Some of the actions include the usual home, back, and recent apps buttons along with toggling the flashlight, toggling rotation lock, and launch any installed application. You can map those actions to your power button, volume rockers, or almost any other hardware button. It doesn't work with every button on every device. However, it is new so we expected that. The main functionality of the app is free. Supporters get a little extra if they choose to support development.

Feedly Lab is the next app from the developers of Feedly. There isn't much here yet, but it follows the same basically functionality of Feedly. It's a news reader app with support for most blogs across most interests. That includes tech, STEM, and even some niche stuff like agriculture. It seems like there are some AI elements as well. However, this is still very early on in development. It should get even more features when it's ready for a full launch. We might not recommend this to people who hate bugs. However, if you don't mind submitting the occasional bug report, this is a nifty little news reader.

Firefox Reality Browser is a virtual reality web browser from Mozilla. It works with VR headsets to browse the web without leaving to use your phone. It has both 2D and 3D immersive modes. Additionally, it supports VR web content when it is available. The app doesn't work everywhere. It's only for Viveport, Oculus, and Google Daydream devices. Thus, don't expect to use this on your every day phone while walking around. Still, it looks good, it's completely free, and the bugs aren't too big of a deal. We really like that popular web browsers are making a push for VR.

Hire is a service that manages potential hires with Google products. You can control the entire hiring process from accepting an application to the actual hire from here. The app uses the entire G Suite to generate stuff like lists, graphs, emails, calendar entries, etc. Thus, you can receive an application in Drive, set up a meeting through Gmail, add it to your Calendar, etc all through the Hire app. This is in no way for average users. However, for business users, we really only recommend it if you use G Suite already or are considering using G Suite.

ICE ICE BABY

Promenade Ice keeps it cool with holiday ice camps for kids this winter By bazaar staff

We may be enjoying the colder weather in Kuwait now that we are in the throes of winter but one place which can always be counted on for being the coolest all year around is Promenade Ice. This specially created ice rink covering one thousand squared meters and found on the first floor of The Promenade houses training and classes all year long, and for the last few years they have curated specific programs for summer and winter. The winter 2018 Learn to Skate holiday ice camps promise an action-packed program for children aged five to twelve years old. The course is spread over a span of ten days, with a well-earned weekend off in the middle to rest, recuperate and recover in readiness for 134

the ultimate finale, more on that later. There is no need to invest in ice skates to take part, as Promenade Ice has their own supply of ice skates. Just make sure that your little ones are wrapped up warmly in layers that can be taken off when they start to exert themselves, which they will. Watchful parents can always observe their children from the built in bleachers during lessons. Ice skating can be very physically demanding, especially when you’re first trying it out, so the Learn to Skate courses are designed with this in mind. The lessons are for one full hour every morning and start with the basics. This ensures that every child grows in confidence with each lesson. Day one tackles balancing on ice and the week covers skating backwards and forwards, and skating on one foot in straight and curved lines. It is the ideal introduction to skating and, of course, to making new friends too. The course is designed for absolute

beginners and is totally interactive with the skaters learning the required skills through playing games and engaging in fun activities. Promenade Ice has a team of internationally recruited and experienced coaches who take great care with the children and are used to supporting novice child skaters through the challenges and triumphs of learning to ice skate. While every child learns at a different pace and of course has a different body structure within such a broad age range, the Coaches report that every child which has been on any of the ice camps is by the end always able to skate by themselves needs no support “skating buddy which does wonders for their confidence on and off the ice rink. Each trainer has demonstrated a passion for both working with children and for the sport and is ideally suited for delivering the best experience to the skating students in these holiday ice camps. Each camp has the space to safely

train and give focused attention to up to twenty pupils, so even if students may be learning at different paces within the same group, the group is intimate enough for the Coach to help and motivate any child who may be facing more of a challenge with certain aspects of the lessons. Parents can also trust the training as Promenade Ice follows ISIAsia (Ice Skating Institute Asia) rules and standards. There are three camp options to choose from in total this season starting from mid-December and ending in January 2019. The weeks run from Sunday to Thursday leaving the weekends free for the children to share tales of their exciting exploits with friends and family and look forward to what more is to come. The second week is where all the hard work from the week before comes together. The first day is spent running through all the previous lessons compounding the learning they have already undertaken. There is no doubt the learning that the children experience is not only about skating itself but concerns understanding the value of dedication, hard work, commitment, planning, team work and developing interpersonal skills. All valuable transferable skills that they can apply at school and in life. The aim of the second week is to perform a group dance recital in front of friends and family at Promenade Ice and the program is made and formatted taking all the children into account so that they can each showcase their new abilities. Often performed with costumes and music this is a delight to behold and a wonderful way for the children to celebrate the end of the holiday ice camp and the beginning of healthy new hobby. Plus they each get a certificate of completion to be proud of! After ‘Basic’ training it is also possible to continue on to ‘Beginners’ and then ‘Freestyle’ camps, so Promenade Ice can train your child all the way through to a competitive level if they show the skill and the inclination to train. Some of today’s internationally award-winning Promenade Ice Team skaters made their start at the ice camps, which is testimony to the level of skill and dedication the Coaches give the children and how well it is possible to respond to this kind of specialized training in the atmosphere that Promenade Ice provides.

For more information on the holiday ice camps you can contact Promenade Ice by calling 2227 7130, or contact them directly for the latest updates on Instagram @promenade.ice. PORSCHE 911 UNDER PRESSURE: TESTING THE NEW GENERATION The home straight for the new Porsche 911: the prototypes’ engines get revved up to complete the final stages of a global testing programme which put the new sports cars under a great deal of stress. Test vehicles are moving between climate zones with temperature differences of up to 85 degrees Celsius; sprinting across elevation changes spanning more than four kilometres; enduring lengthy traffic jams in major cities and setting new records on race tracks. Despite those gruelling tests, every component of the car must function as reliably as it did at the outset. The testing focuses first on Porsche’s traditional core areas of expertise, such as the chassis and engine, which have been enhanced even further to increase both performance and everyday use. Additionally, there are functional checks and stress tests for the entirely new operating concept in the cockpit, as well as instruments and displays. The new driver assistance systems and enhanced connectivity must also be assessed as part of the strenuous testing phase. In hot regions, such as the Middle East or Death Valley in the USA, the air conditioning, thermal management, and combustion behaviour need to pass functional checks in temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius. Interior components must not expand or contract and make noises when exposed to extreme heat. In Finland’s 35 degrees Celsius below freezing point, testing focuses on functions such as cold start, heating, traction, handling and braking behaviour, as well as the response speed of the control systems related to driving dynamics. Endurance runs saw the new 911 test cars on China’s roads in country-typical traffic situations, and proved the fact that they can run reliably on different quality fuels. The vehicles reach their geographically lowest point in Death Valley, which descends to around 90 metres below sea level; while the thin air on Mount Evans, Colorado, with a height of 4,300 metres, challenges the biturbo charging and the fuel system. By the time testing is complete, the cars have been driven for around three million kilometres in total. For more information, visit Porsche Centre Kuwait on Facebook and Instagram. To learn more about the currently available models and new vehicle launches, please visit www.porschekuwait.com or call 1870 870.

LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21

Times might be a little rough for you. It's as if reality were waiting to trip you up. Nothing about you is realistic. If you're still a bit childish or irresponsible, this month may be rather hard on you. It's nothing serious, so don't worry. However, if you feel as though your back is to the wall, don't react. Try to calmly accept what's happening to you.

This would be an ideal time to think about your personal interests in all areas of your life. You've surely noticed that in various relationships you tend not to consider yourself and what you get out of it. The configuration of the planets can help you concentrate on yourself and think about what you give up in return for your need to please others.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

Here's a day that will be rather calm for you. Peace has replaced all your soul searching. You feel in contact with life's daily routine, including aspects that you don't always consider like the weather, people's expressions, or small coincidences. You seem to be floating on a cloud. You're going to have a good deal of confidence!

Don't be surprised if you meet people who are quite self-centered. It could be that you have a hard time understanding people who are egotistical and don't participate in activities with others. You could try looking at them as if they had something to teach you the value of living a bit more for yourself and less for others.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22

You should think about your over dependence on money and material possessions. Don't you think you spend too much of your precious time thinking about money and where you're going to find it? Are you careful with your money? Do you stick to or even have a budget? These are important questions and this is a good time to find the answers.

These days could be rather constraining. Despite your great aspirations, this month will be marked by the need to take care of the small problems that arise in everyday life. In other words, just what you love. That said, being more down to Earth or in contact with the realities of the world can never do anything but good for you.

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22

The last few weeks have been a little too serious for your tastes, but this is good for you every once in a while, Aquarius. You may have a tendency to want to play, which sometimes keeps you from getting your work done. Take this time to try and get your daily life organized so you can have time to take care of your responsibilities and have a little fun.

Even if it's true in general that Virgo have strong bodies like you, there are times when it's important that they take care of themselves. This would be an ideal time to be more aware of that fact. It isn't that you're going to have health problems. Rather, the planets are positioned in the middle of abundant activity, suggesting that you'd be wise to take care of your body - your greatest asset.

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 It's time to get yourself together. You have a tendency to be all over the place. You need to channel your energies into something you really care about. Tell yourself how proud you would be if you could get this done. Don't give up and don't change directions on your way. Stay focused!

You're someone who needs to have a lot of time to yourself. You often dream of curling up in bed with a good book or going for a bike ride. This is just your natural rhythm. Don't try and ignore it, because doing so could only mean problems for you. Give in from time to time. If you don't, at least use your time to think about how you could.

ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19

This will be a great time for you. Everything you touch will seem to turn to gold. The day's events will fall right into place. You will take pleasure in being calm and efficient. But what you may not realize is that this could happen every day. Take the time to see what's going right today in order to make it happen again tomorrow!

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 You may be feeling a little surer of yourself than usual. You can be fairly shy and reserved. You should try and make people a little more aware of you, to take you seriously. It's time that people respected you more, especially the people around you. Try to think of yourself before you think of other people.
