Int The last month of 2016 is finally upon us. And what a roller coaster of a year it's been. So many expats have bid goodbye and left Kuwait for good, mainly because of the ever increasing cost of living here, combined with relatively lower salaries compared to the rest of the GCC. At the same time, those who are still here, Kuwaitis and expats alike, have all started paying more attention to their spending habits, and go out less, eat out less, and buy less, adding to the woes of retailers, malls, and restaurants throughout the country. However, let's not fret too much, since as we all know, these things are cyclical and what goes down, must go up eventually (yes oil prices, I'm talking to you), so hopefully 2017 will turn out to be one of those boom years we all miss so dearly.

Here at bazaar headquarters, positivity levels are high, and now more than ever, we're in the 'feel good' zone, primarily because of the sheer number of interesting people and places we keep finding out about in our beloved K-town. Starting us off, we discovered an incredible mobile boutique that makes fashion that much more accessible! Fashion on Wheels, as it is called, was created by none other than Hind Sanad and we chatted with her to find out what motivated this idea. We also chatted with the founders of Kingdome, an online magazine dedicated to music and the arts, Fay AlHomoud and Adel El-Assaad to kick off our creative collaboration together.

NAWAF GHERAIBAH Date: December 13th Location: Al-Shaheed Park As part of the show organized by LAPA LOYAC, Nawaf’s concert at Al-Shaheed Park's amphitheater will combine local and global sounds in a dynamic and rousing musical performance, sure to be an evening to remember.

Tribal and contemporary instruments fuse together to reflect modern theories of music, poetry and language.

The music’s multifaceted nature is testament to the diversity and range of inspiration and influence, ensuring the sounds are unique and yet familiar all at once. The concert at Al-Shaheed Park is poised to present music from Nawaf’s previous project “Samsara”, as well as a performance of two new musical pieces from an upcoming project, sung by a choir of students from the Higher Institute of Musical Arts Kuwait. Performing with Nawaf on stage will be vocalists Noora Kassem, Daffy, Carol Souki, Omar Afuni, Muntaser Al Farsi and Poornima Dominic.

Nawaf is a composer who enjoys breaking cultural boundaries through music. With half Kuwaiti, half Indian/ Portuguese roots, Nawaf's music is an expression of his rich multicultural heritage.

GEORGE AWDE: STILL DEPARTURES Date: December 6th – Janurary 5th Location: Sultan Gallery George Awde’s first solo exhibition in Kuwait chronicles the transitory existence of a group of young men and boys. Many of them are migrant laborers who emigranted from Syria and Syrian Kurdistan and are living in the context of Beirut from 2007-2016. This exhibition considers the embodiment of becoming men, while also appreciating issues of mobility and nationality as we each etch out our place in this world. Awde’s photographs question the relationship between citizenship, masculinity, and the sense of belonging to a place. The work explores the scars of the flesh with those of the soil. As these men grow and change, the photographs capture physical marks – in the form of tattoos and cuts – giving hints of struggle and survival.

OMAR KHAIRAT IN CONCERT Date: December 23rd Location: Kuwait National Concert Hall, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre From the hallowed halls of Cairo's Opera House, Egypt's legendary pianist, composer and conductor Omar Khairat will be performing at Kuwait's very own National Concert Hall for a night of classical Arabic symphonies.

Known for his many musical compositions such as The Fortune-teller, The Magic Perfumes (1989), and the Arab Rhapsody (1992), Omar Khairat has also composed for a number of notable international events and festivals over the years such as: The Inauguration Ceremony of Bibliotheca Alexandrina (1996), Carthage Festival in Tunisia, Fine Arts Cycle in Spain (2004), October Celebrations (2000), the Opening of the New Suez Canal (2015), Celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of the Egyptian Cinema, and many more. Omar Khairat has received many regional and International awards for his cinematic soundtrack compositions and continues to create music for both film and television productions in Egypt.

The K2O Expedition: A trip for sport and the environment By bazaar staff

Considered as the first trip of its kind in the Gulf region, Kayak4Kuwait has launched its K20 Expedition from Kuwait to Oman.

This expedition, though of a sporting nature, comes with a brilliant environmental twist. In collaboration with the Kuwait Environmental Public Authority (KEPA), Kayak4Kuwait wants to highlight the biodiversity and beauty of the gulf, and the potential threats to the coastal locations they will encounter along the way. With KEPA’s support and continuous commitment to the protection and improvement of Kuwait’s environment, Kayak4Kuwait hopes to provide potential solutions in order to protect and conserve all the sensitive habitats encountered.

Kayak4Kuwait’s K20 Expedition kicked off in early November. Starting from the north of Kuwait through to the Strait of Hormuz, finally ending at the Sultanate of Oman, the expedition is covering a distance of about 2,000 kilometers spanning over 60-70 days in kayaks. Their goal is simple: To raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment for Kuwait and the Gulf’s future generations. They started their journey through the bay (Joun) by following the coast before heading out towards Kubbar Island. From there, they ended up rejoining the coast at Bnaider before heading towards the Nuweisib coastal border to travel onwards.

When we spoke to Kayak4Kuwait’s founder and group leader, Bashar Saleem Al Hunaidi, before his expedition, he said that “This campaign seeks to spread environmental education and awareness among citizens across the Gulf, while identifying the natural resources and their importance in our lives which requires us to give it the care and attention it deserves.

The K20 Expedition’s purpose is to create awareness about Arabia’s marine environment.

While the Arabian Gulf has always played a huge role in the region’s economy, culture, history and even local pastimes – there’s a lack of awareness towards its conservation.

Knowing and understanding the challenges ahead of them, Kayak4Kuwait plans to raise awareness towards our sea’s present and future by: Contributing towards the enforcement of existing environmental legislations, actively influence those in charge to protect the seas as well as strive towards extensive environmental education in both schools and the workforce.

Their mission is to invite everyone out to sea and join the fun! When they’re back, you can join them in this green sport which will surely rekindle your love for the sea. You’ll experience the marine life and the water first hand while

staying in shape! By kayaking around the coast, you’ll get a feel for the reality of the sea’s suffering and how this not only affects society, but can also pose as a threat to the fresh seafood we consume. With this expedition, Kayak4Kuwait is committed to raising bringing people’s attention to the state of the sea.

They’re even taking it a step further by inviting local divers, snorkelers and nature enthusiasts to join them on the expedition.

By showing them the beauty that is below the surface, as well as above, Kayak4Kuwait hopes more people will join their cause in protecting the sea. You can also get involved by spreading the word, organizing a kayak meet-up and paddle out to show your support as they pass by your coastal town, and in many other ways! Breaking barriers with Ghaneema Al-Qudmani By bazaar staff

Whether you’ve had the pleasure of hearing her sing her heart out at several outdoor events, or you’ve collaborated with her as a fellow artist, it’s safe to say that Ghaneema Al-Qudmani is one of the pleasant familiar faces you’re bound to run into and be impressed by in Kuwait’s creative scene.

The full-time graphic designer moonlights as a singer/songwriter and performer, most known for her soulful renditions of famous songs like Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang”. Though her professional skill is graphic design, her indie vibes and buttery voice made way for a reputable music career within the community. “Most people know me for my music,” she says of her passion, indicating that the reason why she seems so familiar is due to her regular attendance in Kuwait’s artistic endeavors.

Although Ghaneema’s musical presence is avid, the artist claims herself to be shy, and insists that she’s been putting in more of an effort to improve her stage presence as of late, starting with her recent starring role in a local university’s production of Mamma Mia! “I feel like it helped me learn how to interact with an audience more when I’m singing. I tend to put up a barrier between myself and the audience during my performances, and being in a play helped knock that barrier down.”

But it’s evident, if you’ve seen her perform, that the barrier only shows focus and intent on the music she, along with her band, guitarist Omar Salem and drummer Abdulrahman Essa create. This journey was a surprising one for Ghaneema, who always loved to sing, and has been drawing all her life, but kept pushing herself to discover aspects of her passion, testing the waters and seeing what she could do. “It all started with a little push,” she says, when asked how it all started.

She found herself breaking into Kuwait’s music scene in 2012, when said little push led her to debut her talents at Qout, with the accompaniment of her acoustic guitar. “I actually met my guitarist at that time, and we started jamming, then I was introduced to my drummer, and then along the way, other members of the musical community.”

Ghaneema is active in the musical community, holding fellow musicians she’s met over the years close to her heart. “I never would have met a bunch of the great people I know if it wasn’t for the music. They’re all extremely supportive, and I think that we should all come together more often, and collaborate as a whole – help each other, without competition.”

The band’s upcoming EP Bad Habits does contain more original work, harmonizing with her illustrations, but we’ll have to wait till 2017 to see what they sound like! “I don’t play originals at shows because I want to release them on my album”, she says slyly, maintaining bits of 32

the mystery her character cannot compromise. And yet, she still manages to break down the barrier enough to play our favorite getting-to-know-you game.

IN A WORLD OF FULL OF NEGATIVITY …

Be nice or keep quiet

As humans and Kryptonians, we are programed to think and assign adjectives in a certain way: Sheep are weak, wolves are bad, men are stronger, and women are more mature (which is partially true, but I digress).

This incisive need we built as a populous to say stuff about things, has really begun to avail its over long due bill and the root of all that is: Free Broadcasting Platforms.

No this is not another article about “The effects of social media on a society” or “how businesses can strive in the digital realm”, rather it is a plea for people to just…relax.

I remember a time when people had to dial seven phone numbers and connect wires together to get a hold of a person, but with today’s platforms and technologies you can reach someone in less than a second. Heck, you can have an AI assistant dial them for you should you find yourself elbows deep in a delicious pizza, and that is why I love technology: It allows me to keep my meal time/connectivity hands free.

What I am not a fan off is “the I must” feeling most people get using these platforms. Someone posted a video I do not like “I must tell them it sucks”. Someone posted a tweet I do not agree with “I must tell them they are wrong”. What is 34

even worse is that people think that this is a birth right to voice themselves at every turn of events because they can and not because they have to.

What people miss these days is the fact that words are an arrangement of letters in a certain order that we adapted in a way that makes sense.

Want to know why words have no real impact?

There is a proven theory that if you give a monkey a keyboard and infinite time, at some point, and at random, that monkey will be able to recreate Shakespeare’s entire library by randomly typing.

I am not stripping words of their effect, words do have a beautiful sensation if they are nice, however the fact that we allocate so much emotion to negative words is beyond me. Write a big essay in the comment section on someone’s post, depicting the beauty of what they just posted, then have someone else post two words under it, like “this sucks” or “this is just bad” and see the person ignore your essay, and engage in a full on conversation trying to defend themselves.

It’s what we do. Sad, but true.

That’s why I am writing this piece. I have one small piece of advice for both the content creators and the spectators: relax, it doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter Mr. Content Creator, because it is not well constructed. It’s a derivative of hate aimed towards disrupting you. It doesn’t matter Mr. Spectator, because not once did anybody leave an online argument with a different opinion. At the end

of the day, we go online with pre-set opinions and we generally leave with the same ideas.

It’s simple. If I like something, I write a nice comment, if not I keep my mouth shut and move on to the next thing. My opinion does not matter, not because I am irrelevant, but because it’s a non-tangible platform with millions of letters inputted to it every second, mostly negative and pure hateful.

But what is real, is the person on the other side of my screen, they have feelings and a story that I am not aware of, and one simple word can send them in a downward negative spiral. Even though people might seem happy, remember, we all use a perfect avatar of our real character online.

It was defined in philosophy that your conscious is what stops you from pressing a button that would kill a random stranger even if it makes you filthy rich. Today, consider the number of buttons that we do press or tap on that could easily kill strangers without even enriching our lives.

Stop it, please…just relax. Oh, and if you don’t like this article just move on to the next one.

BARAKAH MEETS BARAKAH: SAUDI FILM SPEAKS TO THE YOUTH

Hearing the loud laughter of the audience, you wouldn’t imagine that a Saudi production is screening.

But believe it or not, Mahmoud Sabbagh, an independent Saudi filmmaker, has produced a Romantic- Comedy film called Barakah Yukabil Barakah that sold-out theaters. The film, which is a genuine representation of the Saudi society, has been received well by local and international audiences and is now the second Saudi film ever to be submitted to the Oscars for consideration.

The film stars Hisham Fageeh and Fatima AlBanawi, both from Saudi Arabia. It follows the love story of Barakah and Bibi in the conservative Saudi society. Barakah works as a civil servant while Bibi is the adopted daughter of a rich couple and is widely recognized for her stylish blog. Together 36

Barakah and Bibi try to overcome not only their class and social differences but also the restrictive traditions of their society.

Earlier this year, February 21st, to be exactBarakah Yuqabil Baraka premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival - Berlinale, one of the world’s leading film festivals. And from the beginning, the film caught people’s attention as they gathered to see the promised Saudi production, not expecting that laughter would prevail. Sabbagh ended up winning the prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 66th Berlinale in 2016.

After it kicked off at the Berlinale, the film continued receiving positive reviews locally as well as internationally, until it was impossible to overlook it. This meant that entering the 2017 Academy Awards for consideration was certain. The film was submitted for best foreign language film, and its

supporters have high hopes of winning.

Commenting on the submission Sabbagh told Stepfeed: “My biggest prize is actually to make a good, genuine film from Saudi: A film that people can watch, relate to, and can be part of the change.

Going to the Oscars is a great marketing and publicity step. If we could be able to represent the country later in the shortlist, it would be amazing. If not, we are still very happy!”

Barakah Yuqabil Barakah or (Barakah meets Barakah) speaks to the Saudi youth and depicts very serious matters in a very light and humorous manner. The film aims at reflecting normal day-today life in Saudi Arabia and is definitely a hit. Thanks to independent filmmakers like Mahmoud Sabbagh, the film industry that was publicly banned in Saudi Arabia is now revived.

Fifteen years of art and exploration By bazaar staff

While modern artists are constantly in the public eye, Amira Behbehani prefers to remain in the background. Creating her art in peace, the artist finds that keeping a low profile suits her more. As the creative community celebrated her latest solo exhibition at Kuwait’s CAP Gallery that marks her fifteen-year journey with art, we spent one morning with Amira at her studio to explore her inspirations, passions, and what it takes to create art.

Aside from her art which has put her in the spotlight, we learned that the causes and charities that Amira is a part of sparked her interest to become more vocal in the public scene. Amira has found herself creating fundraisers and supporting the Hayatt Breast Cancer Foundation, Peace One Day Charity, LOYAC, several animal shelters and charities, KCRS (Kuwait Child’s Rights Society) and Abolish 153: “I can’t say no to something I believe in,” she started. And as a founding member of Abolish 153, Amira and Sheikha Al Nafisi will be organizing a fundraising art event to raise awareness and funds.

“Alanoud [Alsharekh] and Sheikha Lulu [Al Sabah] called everyone they know,” Amira recalled, “I remember we met in Sheikha Lulu’s house and they asked us if we knew anything about Article 153 – we didn’t. When they asked us if we were interested in being members in their organization, I couldn’t say no. I really believed in the cause and I blindly said yes to joining, even though I need to be trained in the laws to be capable to answer any questions about it.” If it’s not a charity, then Amira’s focus and belief goes towards the youth. “I always try to support young emerging designers and artists,” Amira explained, “I do what I wish people would have done with me when I first started.”

True to the artist’s latest solo exhibition, Amira’s journey through art came about fifteen years ago. She decided to quit her job and join the art movement back in 2001 and hasn’t looked back since. Curating and designing exhibitions for other artists, Amira grew very attached to the world of art. It wasn’t until 2003, however, when she actually picked up a brush and began to paint. In 2004/2005 she had her first exhibition at Dar Al Funoon. While Amira is mostly self-taught, she had taken a few workshops here and there. “But I never follow their rules!” Amira laughed, “I try to experiment on my own. If they tell me, for instance, that this line needs to be drawn from top to bottom, I draw it from the bottom, up just to see how it works. It’s a part of my character. It’s what makes me, me!”

“Luckily, I got to experience different types of styles and mediums through my experimentations.

I break the rule to find something that maybe someone else didn’t,” Amira smiled. Investing in a lot of materials to experiment with, Amira spends more time on her experiments than on the concept she’s creating. Once she’s honed her technique, Amira then goes on to making the concept as a completed reality. Her 2016 solo exhibition – entitled A Fifteen-year Journey: The Art of Amira Behbehani – could have been filled with all her different techniques and experimentations; but instead, she decided to focus on key pieces instead. “I didn’t want it to look like I was exhibiting all these techniques I know, I would rather use them gradually and in different exhibitions,” she explained.

Amira’s 2016 exhibition brought us pieces that looked nothing alike. Each creation, each painting had its own thought process and own feel. “This exhibition’s theme refers to my journey through art, and fifteen years of references. These references are what influence the artist at the time,” she continued, “They show you that at this specific point of time, the artist was heavily influenced and painted in a technique similar to Picasso, Matisse, Zaha Hadid or Francis Bacon. They aren’t necessarily aware of that at the time, but looking back at it they can see it – and that’s what I wanted

to talk about in particular with this exhibition.”

Believing that originality in art doesn’t exist, Amira views that novelty emerges through your technique and how you build and layer the piece to make it truly your own. “Original art is what you can find etched on the walls in caves,” Amira said.

Changing from one day to the next, Amira finds herself in all of her practices – “it depends on my mood that day, but I love ink, watercolor and oil.”

Bored of repetition, the artist deplores creating the same piece in different styles. She’d rather explore different concepts, “Even [Continued...]

[Continued...] if I draw a group of trees I like, I draw them differently each time to show a different side to them.” Unlike many, Amira doesn’t let the material decide what she could paint, she lets the painting tell her which materials to use. “The image itself controls the medium and the technique,” Amira went on, “You can’t force a technique onto a concept, it’s the concept that forces the technique and medium.” With so many techniques up her sleeve, Amira feels the most attached to black and white. “I know how to master black and create paintings with nothing but black!” her eyes sparkled, “But the reason my art keeps changing is because I keep changing. The thoughts and ideas I want to portray force me to change and create different pieces with different mediums and techniques.”

“I can’t make copies, even if they’re my own,” she explained, “Even if you ask me to recreate a piece for you, I would do it in a different way to represent who I am now and what I’m influenced by now.” Always changing and always evolving in her style, Amira enjoys sharing her references and can always tell you what influenced a certain style – be it a reference to a specific artist, a mood or thought.

With all the different methods she has worked with, Amira prides herself with her familiarity with the 15th Century, silverpoint drawing technique. “None of the artists use it here in Kuwait!” Amira went on to explain, “Basically, you use brass, gold or silver points to draw and it comes off as graphite [on the right surface].” Going around her studio, it becomes clear at just how skilled Amira Behbehani is with so many mediums. Woodcutting, drypoint [etching on plexiglass] and Gelli plate printing are just some of the techniques she uses in her dayto-day creations. “I keep using different materials and mediums until I become aware of what I need and how I need to use it,” she stated.

Inspiration comes to her from all over, “anything can trigger me, but if I try to force inspiration, I can’t find it.” While she can go for days, maybe weeks, without inspiration, when it finally hits, Amira finds herself exploding with ideas and concepts that need to be instantly created. “I create my art for me, I don’t care what other people think of it,” she grinned.

Amira has a rare ability of separating herself from the art. Once she takes her finished pieces to the gallery to be exhibited, Amira turns from artist to curator. She considers the works as a collective body and evaluates single pieces to find the best ways to exhibit them as though they were someone else’s work. While this might seem to involve endless planning, Amira confesses that the only plans set in stone are the number of pieces that need to be in the show. In always breaking the mold, Amira’s outlook on art transcends what others may conform to, and she concisely concluded, “I don’t follow what people want”.

According to her Instagram account, Fatma Abodoma – a unique, talented artist and photographer - is “a human witch who used to be a whale.” Through this wacky and original phrase, Fatma invites us to a world of playfulness and intrigue. Being a sucker for original souls, I knew I had to ask her a few questions!

Join me in getting to know a little more about this passionate artist.

As a visual artist, you bring the world to life through art and photographs. I noticed you take many portraits. Have you found the gateway to heaven in human faces?

Yes, I found the gateway to heaven in human faces.

A human face communicates love, hatred, passion, happiness; it shows all the mixed complicated feelings, especially the eyes. The human body is also a gateway to a lot of things, but in a face, feelings are more focused.

Tell us a little about your artist-in-residence program at Al Makan Art Studio.

Generally, residence programs add something to the artist's world. It is like an adventure. I work on my art outside of my comfort zone and bond with the new energy of the space, exploring different moods, which is very important from time to time. Plus, what is essential is the interaction with people, conversation, communication and exposure. The youth usually come to Al Makan to hang out with friends, not to be introduced to art or artists. But, then, they have access to art when they do come, and, as a result, begin to appreciate art and reach a point of understanding it. The theme I chose for this residence program is the challenges and changes between women and society nowadays.

Do you transcend gender, nationality and belief systems in your art, or do you think it is important to reflect your labels in your art?

To me, art is a personal expression of an idea, feeling, experience or sometimes an opinion. Therefore, it is a spectrum including both transcendence and labels.

Are there any underlying messages or is your work or do you let the art lead the way?

The message in my art is usually not in the artwork itself, but in how my art reaches each person. In a certain sense, we can say that art leads the way.

Finally, I have spoken to many people who are afraid of criticism and claim to not be ready to share their art with the world. What would you say to these artists that bury their passions for fear of expressing themselves?

Socrates said: "Speak, so that I may see you.”

Although art is a personal expression, I feel that the interaction between art and the audience is a cornerstone for its completion. Criticism is one of the natural outcomes of exposure. It expresses the diversity in people and their reactions. This diversity contributes to the artist's evolution and widens the artist’s point of view.

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION – MISUNDERSTOOD?

A common term in today’s digital lexicon is disruptive innovation – a term that has fallen victim to much misunderstanding. Too many people speak of disruption using the term loosely to invoke the concept of innovation, and disruptive innovation to describe any situation in which the industry is shaken and previous bearers of success succumb.

Uber would be such an example of where many commentators have gone wrong in their use of the term, or at least according to the father of disruptive innovation himself.

The concept was first introduced – and phenomenon analyzed – in 1995 by Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen, who defined it as an innovation that transforms a historically expensive and complicated product accessed by a few people only, to something more affordable and accessible to a much larger population.

Clayton replaced the term disruptive technology with disruptive innovation, recognizing that few technologies are essentially disruptive; it is the business model enabled by the technology which is disruptive.

The theory was aimed at well-managed companies and managing executives who overlooked researching the community. Clayton believed that disruptive innovation companies had the power to hurt successful companies by better focusing on the customer, hence tapping into markets highly ignored. Clayton distinguished between low-end disruption that targets customers who are in no need of the full performance expected by high-end customers, and new-market disruption which targets a previously unserved customer base.

A classic example of low-end disruption is the personal computer. Prior to personal computers, minicomputers and mainframes were the dominant products in the computing industry, and they required engineering experience to operate. In the late 1970s, Apple began selling computers as toys for children. These products were nowhere near competing with minicomputers in terms of quality, but since the mass could not afford or knew very little as to how to operate the expensive minicomputers, people shifted to purchasing Apple computers as they were better alternatives. Gradually, Apple improved on their innovation and within a few years, their computers were set to do the work of the much more expensive minicomputers. Apple managed to create a huge new market, making personal computers usable by the mass and ultimately changing the existing industry.

An example of new-market disruption is the introduction by Ford of Model T in 1908, changing 44

the transportation market. Prior to Ford’s Model T, automobiles were expensive and considered a luxury item, and hence did not disrupt the horsedrawn vehicles market. Thanks to Ford’s innovative approach which led to the development of the assembly line technique of mass production, the company was able to produce cheaper automobiles that inevitably replaced horse-drawn vehicles.

A product need not necessarily eliminate industries, but can well improve on existing markets and entail adoption of new business models. For instance, Netflix is a case of a “classically” disruptive model, whose initial service of offering online movie rentals was not as appealing to Blockbuster’s mainstream customers, who were looking for instant gratification as they chose movies. Netflix later adapted by changing their business model and offering streaming on-demand video to customers, which became more appealing to Blockbuster’s customers who eventually transitioned in high numbers, forcing Blockbuster into bankruptcy in 2010.

Customers of most disruptive innovations tend to reside at the lower bottom of the market with unrefined products that those on top often fail to recognize as a threat. The disruptive innovation companies then develop their products and start stealing customers or reshaping industries, such as Skype did with respect to telecommunications.

As technology advances and knowledge becomes accessible to all, there is fertile ground for many new disruptive innovations to rise. We may see

3D printing disrupting manufacturing industries, or flying vehicles disrupting transportation as we know it. Automakers are staking their claims in the ridesharing world, which may have a huge role to play in shaping the future of mobility.

The horizon is endless, and we are in for a ride.

In conclusion, and for this article to be fair, let us go back and elaborate further on Clayton’s statement regarding Uber. Now, according to his theory, a disruptive business has to either originate in a low-end market and move upstream, to higher value markets, or it has to create a new market where none existed; Clayton says Uber meets neither of these criteria. Others argue however that Uber did in fact take off from a low-market foothold, with UberX unlocking an entirely new source of supply by allowing anyone who owns a car to drive without certification, and creating a new market within for-hire transportation.

The misunderstanding may lie in the fact that Uber, just like Apple, does not follow a linear approach – which is demand-based and with a distinct customer group - but behaves as a platform business. This difference appears to have important implications while some are calling for the theory of disruptive innovation to start accounting for platforms, given they are the dominant business model of the 21st century.

People have roamed the Earth since the beginning of time. The reasons for travel vary from war, weather, or even the hunt for food. The last few years have seen a surge of nomadic movements in the form of refugees fleeing war-torn countries. So what’s the first thing a traveler would need?

Shelter, to be more specific a tent.

Jordanian-Canadian Abeer Seikaly, a crucial asset to the “Weaving a Home” Project, has designed a tent that provides more than just shelter.

With the refugees in mind, her tent merges different combinations from nature into a very awesome tent!

The project was a winning entry in the 2013 Lexus Design Awards. The fabric looks woven together, much 46

like the traditional forms of embroidery. It looks very much like the scales of a snake, too!

The tent itself does more than just protect. It is designed to keep the cold air out during the winter, but bring it in during the summer. The top of the tent collects rainwater that spirals down through internal pipes in which people could then bring back up for a shower.

The tent’s fabric even has strong thermal properties that can convert solar radiation into power for lighting and heat collected water for showering.

It’s designed to fold up neatly for travel, making it the invention that could save thousands of lives.

Abeer says on her website: “This lightweight, mobile, structural fabric could potentially close the gap between need and desire as people metaphorically weave their lives back together, physically weaving their built environment into a place

both new and familiar, transient and rooted, private and connected. In this space, the refugees find a place to pause from their turbulent worlds, a place to weave the tapestry of their new lives. They weave their shelter into home.”

In addition to her independent practice, Abeer is also the production manager of Adel Abidin, the internationally recognized Iraqi-Finnish video artist.

The Weaving a Home project is still under development and hopefully, it soon will be available for all refugees.

Sometimes, businesses experience difficulty in achieving success when working with consultants. According to 4R’s Consulting Founder Randa Diab, however, a successful result is feasible when a clear and transparent relationship is established between consultant and client.

She started off our conversation with a simple yet powerful statement, “If you want to be good at something, you need to have a good personal measure for it. There’s simply no other way to do it. I have a passion for consulting, and after much time and previous experiences, I realized that I should be working in this field.”

What first began as a part time experiment quickly evolved into a fully-fledged business.

Once upon a time, Randa worked the basic 9-5 grind that most people experience, “This format wasn’t sustainable for me when it came to starting a family. "While I loved all of my previous jobs, a full time job at the time wasn’t the thing for me.” But, due to Randa’s broad expertise in the food and beverage management industry, the work kept coming in, despite her step away from the traditional job format. Randa added, “At first, I handled all of the consulting services myself. As work progressed, I began expanding my network of professionals to work with, to people who also shared my similar circumstances. It’s wonderful to include people who, like me, still wanted to utilize their varied expertise on different projects.”

Experience isn’t always equated with quality; it sometimes has its limitations. From Randa’s personal experience as an at home mom, she knew that life is never defined by a certain set of rules, and she is breaking the stigma that undermines the capabilities of other women who share her experience with 4R’s Consulting.

“I noticed many, extremely qualified women who wanted to take on different projects.”

Today, Randa’s network includes creatives and experts with varying experiences, but at the end of the day, she is a part of every step in 48

the consulting process. “I am obliged to work with different budgets, allowing me to pool in people from various circles but I’m always proctoring the process, especially when more people are involved.” Aside from working with a wide network of professionals, 4R’s Consulting is also planning to give free seminars to further the local youth’s understanding of business and entrepreneurship.

For Randa, specializing in the food and beverage industry came as a natural decision.

Multifaceted and multitalented, Randa worked with companies like Sultan Center, Alshaya and Acquire foods, and considers each experience as a wonderful opportunity that further honed her consulting skills. Knowing that she was on to something special, Randa explained that, “F&B is what I know best. Combining my experience with my passion for food is truly a blessing. The field is not only fun, it’s extremely challenging.”

Armed with a Doctor of Business Administration from Paris Business School and Six Sigma (Green) certifications, Randa’s approach to her business is scientific above all else. She believes in a “tried and tested process, because there are people who study these processes for years proving that consulting should never take on an ad hoc approach.”

Randa also highlighted the importance of sustainability, “Sustaining success is difficult, but relying on sustaining a business without proactivity is redundant. Businesses need consistent, realistic plans.” Based on her previous work experience, Randa is naturally able to assess both sustainable and unsustainable practices, and she stated, "Sometimes, you

don't need to face a drastic issue to improve on a business element. Whereas I at times deal with a problem that requires a complete systematic overhaul."

Randa first approaches a client in a casual setting, “When I say I’m meeting a client for a diagnostic, that sometimes sounds scary, but it’s really a simple conversation where I learn how I could be of help.” Randa likens her services to a visit to a doctor, “Think of an issue as an ailment, a doctor can’t simply give you medicine without analyzing your symptoms.” The casual conversation is then followed by a second evaluation on the premise or location of a given business, which leads to a diagnostic report and plan that is prepared by Randa. Depending on what diagnostics reveal, why symptoms or issues arise, a refined plan of action is drawn.

17 YEAR OLD EGYPTIAN SAVES LIVES WITH HER CHEMICAL INVENTION

Saving lives is one of the noblest goals out there to pursue. And while you don’t hear often about 17-year-olds preoccupied to achieve such lengths, this became the ultimate objective for Egyptian Deena Mousa when she noticed that excess bleeding is the second cause of death in hospitals.

Deena grew up in a household that revolved around science. Her father is a professor and a researcher, and her older siblings were often involved in scientific projects. And so as a child, she followed suite and started her scientific journey.

At the age of five, she conducted her first science experiment on how plants grow, after her father gifted her with a plant seed and a pot of soil for her birthday. So it is no surprise that at the age of 17, she would cook up something that will soon revolutionize the medical world.

Working for 2 years in the Albany College of Pharmacy in New York, where her father is the chairman of the research institute, Deena ended up developing Hemostat V-Seal- liquid drop, which can stop the bleeding of any major wound within 10 seconds. In simpler terms, her product can stop bleeding in a faster ratio than the products currently used in hospitals, which can take up to 12 seconds. Shortening the time needed for the wound to heal by even seconds means liters of blood will be preserved, which can ultimately save the wounded victim’s life. When approached by Barakabits, Deena explains her product further: “Hemostat V-Seal can stop bleeding in any major wound within 10 seconds – as compared to the current standard of care, which takes 10-12 minutes. Practically, that’s the difference between losing milliliters and liters of blood – the difference between life and death.

Hemostat is also anti microbial and has wound healing properties.”

Deena definitely has other impressive achievements on her young resume. She has worked on other projects with other institutions including The Renselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she gained support from other experienced researchers.

“My high school [Emma Willard High School] helped me and others identify Labs that matched our interests. Luckily, I have only been met with enthusiasm, scientists who truly believe in the importance of their work and eager to teach others.”

Deena has already submitted the necessary patent applications. She’s now seeking the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration and is ready to introduce her product in the market.

Currently, Deena is a freshman at Yale University, and plans to study Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. She aspires to conduct more exciting research and to make her product available for all those in need for it.

A conversation with Fay Al-Homoud and Adel El-Assaad By bazaar staff

The arts, though vast in quantity, genre and practice, fare difficult to access in the region, being scattered within community pockets of each country. We don’t even manage to “catch them all”, and constantly find ourselves wondering how many talented people are really out there? To quote the late Leonard Cohen we “can’t keep track of each fallen robin.” This is where an exclusive to the creative arts online magazine like Kingdome shows its value in a region where art is important, yet not showcased enough.

Fay Al-Homoud and Adel El-Assaad were first inspired by plans to conceptualize an event dedicated to bboys and urban street dancing, stating that, “The event meant to take place under a built dome-like structure representing the realm of urban street culture. The dome itself sparked the idea to create our own planet; A kingdom of sorts. Hence the name Kingdome, merging both notions of a KINGDOM and a DOME, perfectly.” From there, they decided to focus on all things representing both regional and international street culture and talent.

Kingdome is ultimately an online lifestyle magazine, and poses as the answer to all of Fay and Adel’s questions, giving both artistic souls a platform to spread their love and appreciation for the arts, and equal opportunities for the talented to show the public their capabilities. “We aim to present Kingdome as a showcasing platform and not as a standard content provider.” Fay says of the publication. “We are very interested in the hidden talents and strive to make Kingdome the source for hidden creative. The on-going search for hidden talents is actually what Kingdome was founded on and this limelight is what sets us apart, gaining us recognition so far.” With aiming to showcase rather than merely cover topics, the magazine is exposed to far more opportunities and projects with the global creative communities. Kingdome aims not to limit their interaction as only a media face, but as partners in the community.

And as partners in the community, Adel and Fay work hand in hand, building the initiative from the ground up. Fay’s responsibilities as Managing Partner as well as the Editor in Chief of Kingdome include editorial approvals, content coordination, the scout for talent, planning of features and task delegation for the team. She also plays a primary role Kingdome’s business and creative development.

As Managing Editor and Creative Director, Adel also acts as a lead in Beirut and the Senior Lifestyle Editor of Kingdome. He plans its creative development, associations and events and collaborations while staying true of his duties in building Kingdome’s Lifestyle Section, editorially. “Adel spends a lot of time in Lebanon, and everyone knows how amazingly creative that country is! The scene

is overflowing with new concepts and creativity is overwhelming. He comes back with great opportunities and we both work on strategically developing the magazine with both our networks and finds.” Fay says of her partner’s work.

There were so many great stories to tell and my love for supporting the arts has made me even more determined to produce great editorial and features to showcase these creative people and their work.” Even prior to Kingdome’s inception, Fay to this day prides herself in trying to attend as many events as possible, both in Kuwait and abroad, to remain up-to-date on industry news regarding up and coming and established artists, designers, creative news, gallery openings and related happenings.

What Adel’s expertise contributes is derived from his understanding of luxury lifestyle, contemporary high fashion marketing, creative communications and building beautiful and effective customer experiences for shoppers.

As a founder of his boutique consultancy, A.EL.A Communications, he doesn’t limit himself to brands, and feels that the flexibility of Kingdome introduces him to different networks to work with.

Examining the future of the traditional workplace

Millennials are changing the face of work and the traditional model that exists in the workplace to something much more flexible, flat and drastically different. As millennials move into the 21st Century they are dominating the work force and will not settle for any “old” job or behavior from their superiors at work.

More and more businesses are struggling with the millennial work ethic and are having a hard time keeping their employees satisfied. According to Louis Effron in his article Why Millennials don’t want to work for you (2015) for Forbes, “Millennials will represent 40% of the total workforce by 2020”.

This change in the workplace should not come as a shock though; millennials are raised in a culture of reward and recognition brought on by home, school and peers. Millennials also grew up as the “selfiekids” with their parents, teachers etc., continuously “snapping” anything they do and showing it off to “the social media” world. Therefore, millennials could be perceived as needing constant support and praise. These “kids” as seen by the baby boomers, view work as a place of work only and favor having a full and enriching life as opposed to the traditional work-life balance. The challenge for employers lies in shifting their workplace policies to reflect the behavior and mindset as millennials continue to replace baby boomers in the workplace.

Managers Managers who once used certain tactics to motivate baby-boomers cannot use the same strategies when working with their younger counterparts. One example that has been frequently debated is the notion of feedback by superiors to millennials. Such examples include the traditional semi-annual reviews are too infrequent for millennials and would prefer continuous engagement from superiors. With that being said, millennials respond to a healthier dialogue from a superior; that engages them in a positive way and allows them to be creative. In a 2009 article by Tamara Erickson, a millennial who had been struggling in her role, admitted to peers, “I guess I just expected that I would get to act on more of my ideas, and that the higher ups here would have figured out by now that the model’s changing.” (Gen Y in the Workforce, Tamara Erickson, Harvard Business Review, February 2009). Even Erickson’s use of higher ups indicates that millennials also view superiors and hierarchy as flat and sometimes irrelevant to their success.

Many questions arise with this topic and what are the repercussions to this behavior and the 56

workplace shift that is happening? According to some researchers, such as Dan Schawbel in his article Millennials vs. Baby Boomers: Who Would You Rather Hire? (2012) for Time wrote that even though young workers are less likely than previous generations to actually be in the workforce, the youth of today have very strong opinions about the workplace and how it should be run, and what their place should be in it. Millennial babies are not used to receiving critical feedback and may not tolerate workplace hierarchies. After receiving trophies for participation, discussing household issues and decisions with their parents and a community concept in schools, millennials are not going to tolerate a condemning pyramid structure in a work environment.

Communication According to Rawan AlMarzouq, a certified stylist and fashion/lifestyle blogger as well as personality in Kuwait and the GCC, “everyone needs to work and communicate positively together which in turn can generate creativity, collaboration and success.” She continues to add, “I was working in a 9-5 job yet I felt the calling to go out on my own and use my skills to create and build my business as well as help other aspiring creatives in my field”.

In another attempt to understand the way communication is transforming amongst those in positions of authority and those mentoring under them as AlMarzouq mentions, it is important to continue to understand your role in the system. Because communication is an integral part of the work environment,

learning the etiquette necessary for respectful and appropriate communication is extremely important.

Although the non-millennial generation see the dynamics changing, it is very wise to remember that individuals in positions of leadership have worked hard to get there.

Keeping that respectful dialogue present whether in person or via on-line medium is important.

In conclusion, can it be a career breaker?

As Schawbel also mentions in his article cited above, millennials will also reshape the workplace—sooner than later, if they have their way. Among other characteristics that stand out, millennials, who have come of age with the text messages and social media, are an impatient bunch: They’re hyper-connected, tech savvy, entrepreneurial, and collaborative. They also favor fast-paced work environments, want quick promotions, and aren’t fans of traditional office rules and hierarchies.

Above all else, are the relationships created in the workplace. It is important to ensure that relationships remain trusting and respectful.

Although many working relationships are friendly, it is important to understand that a hierarchy does exist in the workplace and responsible communication, cooperation and collaboration are important. If a millennial does decide to quit their job and become an entrepreneur, one day they may need to look back to their previous peers and therefore keeping those doors open are always best practice in any field of work.

Relationships are the source of our greatest pleasure and our greatest pain.

Sitting here, looking across the sala at the female members of my family, I am overcome with gratitude for the fortuitous happenstance of my birth. This is the 15th year that my mother, sister, two sistersin-law and I have gotten together for a weekend of …nothing.= No plans, no agenda, no purpose except to spend time in each other’s company. We talk, drink a lot of coffee, try out new restaurants, talk, walk, laugh, cry, play games, and just hang out. These beloved women are fixtures in my life.

We need, and crave, relationships. All different kinds of relationships – friendships, family, lovers, partners and colleagues, each different connection enriches our lives, sharpens our intellect, fulfills our need for emotional intimacy, and helps create a sense of connectedness that contributes to the sense of Self we need to be mentally, physically and psychologically healthy.

This creates the same dilemma for everyone. Relationships are risky. Sometimes, they don’t work out. They begin, or become, dysfunctional, conflicted, painful or destructive.

The very situation that we look to for support, encouragement, safety and companionship, becomes the source of distress in our lives.

This risk is inherent in every form of 58

relationship. We may not choose our relatives, but this changes nothing of the truth about the risks and rewards. To have a relationship of choice go awry may feel like more of a betrayal than it does to experience conflict or dysfunction in the family; possibly we make mental allowances for difficult family members because we ‘inherited’ these connections through no choice of our own. The pain, however, of any rupture is the same.

We need close connections and relationships of varying degrees of intimacy to be healthy. These foundational connections create safe spaces where who we are and how we are is accepted, loved, nurtured, and held accountable to be the best Self we can be: authentic and real.

A wise old man once told me, “Love without truth is worthless; truth without love is ruthless.”

Healthy relationships walk that fine line between love and truth, accepting that occasionally, more love is beneficial (it covers many transgressions), but other times, the unvarnished (but kindly spoken) truth is needed. Somewhere in the balanced middle is where we thrive the best.

When many of our relationships involve more hurt and wounding than nurturing and encouragement, and when that seems to be the habitual outcome, it may be a signal to stop and look at the Self we bring to the table. Sometimes, we are oblivious to the impact we have on others, sometimes we chronically misread social cues, sometimes we habitually “read” minds, or we unconsciously project our own inner landscape onto the Other, responding in conversation and behaving in ways that are inappropriate or dysfunctional. This typically has a profoundly negative impact on our

opportunities to form the relationships we crave.

Self-reflection, talking with a trusted friend or therapist, and spending time identifying the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours that are contributing to the negative outcomes can bring about a huge shift in the way our connections are formed and function.

Why is this important? Because the quality of our adult relationships profoundly impacts health, achievement, potential, and even length of life. If you don’t have two or three relationships in your life which are safe, nurturing, encouraging and positive of YOU as a unique individual, it’s worth taking the time to change that.

Take stock of the things that work (and the things that don’t) in current relationships. What needs to be different? What would make the relationship shift from ‘sort-of-okay’ to ‘brilliant?’

Who are the safe/nurturing people in your life?

Why are they that way? What’s different about them, and by extension, their interactions with you? To stop and do an inventory for the sake of your future and long-term health is an investment in Self that will pay huge dividends in the long run.

If you have experienced the rewards of nurturing and encouraging relationships, take the time to say, “Thank you.” Cultivating a habit of gratitude is also a positive thing to do.

How did it all begin?

I was given a piano as a birthday gift from my parents when I was seven. I used to listen to the music on TV or radio and try to play what I heard on the piano.

Where did the name come from?

The name originally was Killer. I realized that it was cheesy so I thought why not try to read it from right to left? With advice from my friends, I finally settled with Rellik.

What gave you that initial push to become a DJ? I always felt the need to share the music I love with as many people as possible, and DJing seemed like the perfect choice.

What genre would you describe your tracks?

I would describe it as EDM (Electronic Dance Music). I try my best to combine different elements from different genres of dance music in one track.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

Tiesto. His performances gave me the motivation to become the producer I am today. I've seen him perform four times.

What subgenre doesn’t get the attention it deserves?

Tribal House.

What was the first event you ever played at?

Club 25 in Cairo.

When you play, is it pre-planned or live?

Live, of course. I like to improvise.

Which other countries have you played?

Lebanon and Kuwait.

What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ? Definitely my first gig.

What is the best event you’ve played at?

The Aqua Marine Event here in Kuwait alongside DJ's Kade B, Majed Zane, Amir Sharara (Dubai) and Omar Fayyad.

What do you love about the scene?

I really like how it is becoming very noticeable in almost all countries in the world. Electronic music started as a fringe subculture, and now it's the biggest youth culture in the world.

What is something that bugs you about the DJ scene?

Making stupid people famous.

If you could eternally be stuck on one year’s music scene, which year would it be and why?

The 70’s disco scene. I just love it.

Time changes technology. Back in the day, DJ’s weren’t in the media. Dance music wasn’t in sales charts and the DJ was the nerd in the corner.

Nowadays, million-dollar stages and venues are built just for DJ's. My point is that now it is easier for me to just get a tune on a USB stick, tour the world and it will pretty much do the same job as

vinyl did back in the day.

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

The National Geographic Wild Channel on mute with some deep chill out music.

What do you do outside the dance music scene?

I like to have some quality time with my family and friends.

Where do you think the scene is headed? One year from now? Five years from now?

The scene will definitely grow bigger and better. This is our time to shine.

What is one mistake you see a lot of up and coming DJ’s making? What advice would you give them?

My advice is to get your head out of that laptop and stop being a Robo-DJ. Almost every successful artist has this moment where they stop being a fan or admirer and look for their own signature sound.

3 SUBTLE WAYS TO MAKE AN IMPACT WHILE YOU'RE NEW TO THE JOB

You’d probably be lying to yourself if you said you’ve never gone into a new job and resolved to outperform your team’s expectations. You have plenty of good ideas and want everyone to know that you’re a genius of sorts. Those irritating little projects are the perfect combination of a personal opportunity for you, and a win for the entire team.

Most of the time, that mind-set’s great for your career—it pushes you to be your best day in and day out. But the problem is that some people think that motivating themselves this way gives them permission to push their teammates around.

While your company hired you because you bring something unique to the table, that doesn’t give you license to be condescending about it. So if you want to convince your coworkers that you perform above your pay grade, here are a few mind-sets you should adopt ASAP. 1. YOU’RE EXCITED TO CHIP IN, BUT YOU’RE WILLING TO LEARN FIRST Whether you’re new or have been on your team for a while, it’s perfectly fine to come out and say that you’re eager to pitch in on initiatives that are outside your realm of responsibilities.

However, even if you have a few thoughts about how things could be done differently (or even better), it’s important to take a step back and ask the stakeholders involved to walk you through how they got things done in the past. I’m confident that you can help your (new) teammates do their jobs better, but if you don’t have context for the processes that have worked in the past, you’ll have no clue what elements need optimizing before you dive in.

2. YOU’RE WILLING TO TACKLE PROJECTS YOU HAVEN’T DONE BEFORE Here’s where you should feel free to jump on an opportunity to go above and beyond. How many times have you come across a project that nobody on the team is interested in taking? And how many times have those projects gone undone for extended periods of time, only for the company to figure out that it’s crucial to everyone's success?

As annoying as this might sound, those irritating little projects are the perfect combination of a personal opportunity for you, and a win for the entire team. Plus, volunteering to take these bothersome tasks on is an excellent way to build trust with your team—without rubbing anyone the wrong way.

And as a bonus, once you've taken care of the less desirable tasks, you can move on to making an even bigger impact through the projects that you were excited about doing when you accepted the job.

3. GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO LEARN HOW YOUR NEW TEAM WORKS TOGETHER In my experience, it takes a lot of confidence for someone on a team to openly ask how people prefer to collaborate—especially when he or she is looking for a way to communicate their ideas to optimize things. It’s never easy in any circumstance to admit that you don’t know something, and it’s particularly tough for someone who wants to go above and beyond to start a conversation with that.

However, take these instances as opportunities to show your entire team that you have some ideas to make their lives easier, but that you also want to take the time to learn whether or not those ideas make sense. It’s great that you have a few thoughts about how everyone around you can get things done more efficiently, but before you do that, make sure you have a good understanding of how they’ve done them before.

Hey, I get it. Nobody wants to take a job and just phone it in for the sake of a paycheck (and if you have gotten to that point, it's probably time to start looking for a new job).

Take a deep breath and remember that the team was operating fairly well before you arrived.

However, this motivation can severely damage your working relationships before you have a chance to make a significant impact on the entire team. While you might want to come in and just blow everything up, take a deep breath and remember that the team was operating fairly well before you arrived.

“Growing up, I would hang posters of my favorite singers on my wall and practically cry myself to sleep because, as an Arab living in Kuwait, I thought I’d never be able to achieve my goal of being an international artist” Omar Afuni opens up as he sits comfortably on our plush, leather couch here at bazaar's headquarters. “I wish I had a role model back in the day to show me that it could be done, that my goals weren’t far-fetched. I didn’t, so I decided to become just that for any kid who has any seemingly unreachable dreams."

EARLY BEGINNINGS Born and raised in Kuwait, Omar Afuni discovered his musical inclinations at the young age of five, where he had essentially taught himself to play the keyboard. “I would play songs from the radio by ear on my toy Casio keyboard, and later graduated to a more professional Yamaha keyboard, gifted to me by my uncle.” Initially thinking he would go on to become a pianist, he instead discovered his voice, and taught himself to build on it, and to make sure it was to be heard. From singing and dreaming as a child, Omar found himself crafting his voice as the years passed. His natural talent just about

scored him a spot in The Lion King’s musical choir as he was completing his Masters degree in London, but due to UK regulations (and the fact that he was a non-UK citizen), the opportunity was lost. “I was really upset about it, but that was also validation that I was good enough to really do what I wanted to do.”

THE NEW ALBUM ‘RUSH’ And he did move on to follow his dreams, by putting himself out there “I wanted people to get to know me and my voice, and I specifically sang songs from the genre and style that fit the music I wrote.” This genre and style is a mixture between pop, funk, hip-hop – just feel-good

music that everyone relates to, which is exactly what his new album RUSH projects. “RUSH is a fun album,” Omar gushes. With 11 tracks that are guaranteed to make you laugh, smile, dance, cry and sing along, each song is written

by Omar himself, both lyrically and melodically.

He couldn’t have done it without the help and support of his friends who happen to be some of Kuwait’s most talented musicians. “One of my favorite parts about making this album, and making music in general, was spending so much time with my musician friends –because they all have a great sense of humor and we have a great time exchanging ideas.”

CONNECTING WITH AN AUDIENCE RUSH embodies the relationship Omar has with music. “The song itself gives me a rush, and makes me feel as though I’m singing about music in general” he says of the fun title track.

This statement also says why, in his music, Omar doesn’t specify gender when professing feelings about love. “I want all my music to be relatable and open to interpretation, depending on how YOU feel and what YOU feel passionate about, and in my case, it’s music.” His seventh track, “Perfect” is a song that he finds especially close to his heart. His hauntingly beautiful voice, mixed with a twinge of soulful fry, his lyrics declare that he might not be what his subject had in mind, but that he’s still perfect for them. “'Perfect' is relatable because I don’t care how confident you appear to be, no matter who you are, we all get insecure sometimes and think that we aren’t good enough for someone or something we really love – but in their eyes, we will always be seen as perfect.” Again, the theme of music being his passion ties into the meaning behind “Perfect”, yet he leaves it open for interpretation to his listeners and fans.

THE MUSIC VIDEO “Rush” also has its very own music video! A concept not to be forgotten, this video is the prime example of who Omar is as a musician, and what his musical ethos represents. Poking fun at the difficulties of making a music video, the visual interpretation of “Rush” is a refreshing change that reaps trying to find individuality in a world where everything is done in a traditional, unchanged sense. And what’s even more special about the “Rush” video is that it stars a cast consisting of all of Omar’s friends! “Making the video was tough, and a lot of plans fell through in the process. We had to make the best of the situation. We even learned the choreography the same day on set. When we all let go and had fun with it, it turned out amazing!” With simple choreography and text describing each cliché scene the video included, the result was a quirky feelgood video you’ll find yourself re-watching and dancing to over and over. Perhaps it’s the relatable element that makes it so addictive, coupled with the catchy tune of the song, but

the overall outcome makes for a promising album, if “Rush” is any indication.

THE PROVERBIAL DOOR What makes Omar’s music all the more special is his humility: how he never forgets anybody who had contributed anything to his entire journey – and that he still insists, even with his growing popularity, that he wants to help make a difference “This industry is small in the region, but there is a market for it. There are a lot of people who listen to English music, and a lot of talented artists around here.

I don’t want to be one of the people just opening the door, I want to kick it down and soar through it, with all of these great people along with me.” But what about all of us who are inhibited, and can’t muster up the courage to follow Omar through the proverbial door? “Don’t be discouraged by failure; embrace it as another step on your path to success.

The more times you fail, the closer you become to succeeding.”

HOW INBOUND IS MAKING INROADS INTO MARKETING (PART 1)

Traditional marketing has benefited most marketers that have learnt to do things the right way. For decades we have all been at the mercy of marketers and their messages. Then came the invention of the DVR and ad blockers and marketers were then forced to think of other ways to reach out to their potential customers.

In the past few years, inbound marketing has created a new revolution in the way brands communicate with their customers. So what is Inbound marketing?

Before I get into that, let me give you some perspective; in the old days (when I mean old, I mean up until five years ago), marketers used to rely on cold-calling, email shots, mass SMS, and other methods of push marketing to reach out to their customers. This is essentially outbound marketing and finding success using this technique can be limited in today’s crowded marketplace. In fact these tactics are all marketercentric and end up being interruptive and annoy prospects instead of appealing to them.

The DVR can pause and fast forward through commercials, caller ID can help you avoid coldcallers, and spam filters block unwanted emails from clogging your inbox. Nowadays, people use pop-up killers which are applications that kill pop-ups before they even appear on your PC or smartphones. This means that marketing messages are getting lost and do not reach their intended target audience ultimately costing marketers huge amounts of money.

Inbound marketing is a collective set of tactics used by marketers to lure consumers to their brands by providing engaging and helpful content to win the trust and confidence of the prospects before converting them to customers.

It is a method that can include SEO, SEM, blogs, landing pages and much more. These are all customer-centric and do not interrupt his or her journey. The key is to have an integrated set of marketing touch-points that pull customers towards your brand and more importantly to have quality content that users are looking for.

Inbound marketing predicates the need for brands to get closer to their prospects by influencing them in a subtle way before converting them to buyers. To do this, brands needs to understand a host of things about their prospects like what they are looking for?

What are their demographics? What information do they have already? What is their current state of mind? Getting to these prospects when they are in an important phase of the buying process i.e. “opinion building and fact finding” is crucial to converting them to customers.

Some of you who have done their Google Certification may find this familiar. This primarily identifies with ZMOT or Zero Moment Of Truth a concept invented by Google a few years ago.

It is a practice that teaches users of Google SEO and SEM to apply every day while they set up campaigns on Google.

Put simply, ZMOT is the time users spend researching products and services online. This can be via SEO, SEM, blogs, social media, product reviews on websites and more. This time that they spend doing this research is critically the time they form an opinion about a product or service that eventually pushes them to either buy a product or move away from it.

Here is a typical example. Let’s say Ahmed is looking to buy a new car and is making a switch from a normal sedan to a performance vehicle. He wants to know if he can have custom modifications done to his air intake system.

As he has narrowed his search down to two brands, he looks up their websites, checks out their blogs, and looks at their local Facebook pages to see if he can find answers. He is now in his “opinion building and fact finding” phase.

If one of those brands responds to his queries about modifying the air-intake giving him some really good tips and suggestions without even

hinting at a sale, that is one part of inbound marketing done well. Keeping Ahmed happy with the information means that he will now trust that brand more than the one that did not respond to his query and may lean towards buying that particular brand of vehicle.

The main principles of inbound marketing are educating customers and building trust so that your brand maintains a top-of-mind retention.

Marketers that are embracing inbound have a variety of techniques to master starting from SEO, blogs, social media, landing pages, analytics and more. But trust me, once you learn them, you will find new ways to generate leads, communicate with prospects and win customers. THIS FABRIC CAPTURES ENERGY TO POWER YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES

In the future, your clothes will work for you. A team of scientists led out of the Georgia Institute of Technology has created a fabric that can gather energy from both sunlight and motion, then store it in embedded fibers. The textile, described in Science Advances, could help pave the way for energy-harvesting clothes and new wearable devices.

Scientists and engineers have been working for years on creating fabrics that, if worn, could harvest energy for the wearer, said senior author Zhong Lin Wang, a nanotechnologist at Georgia Tech.

“The objective was to harvest energy from our living environment, for example, human walking or muscle movement and fabric; the goal is to drive small electronics,” he said. “And this research recently attracted a lot of attention because these days, flexible electronics, wearable electronics, have become very popular and fashionable today.

But each of them needs a power source.”

It’s not an easy task to make devices that can be flexible enough to create a material that can actually be sewn into shirts, jackets or other garments. Wang’s team, for one, has 68

been working on various aspects of this earlystage technology for 11 years.

On top of that, any energy would have to be stored in some way that didn’t involve carrying around a bulky battery.

Wang and his team solved these issues by creating a triple-threat (or perhaps, a triplethread) fabric: It uses dye-sensitized solar cells shaped into long fibers to harvest light energy; it uses fiber-shaped triboelectric nanogenerators to harvest electrostatic charge made by normal movement; and it also uses fiber-shaped supercapacitors to store the energy in electrochemical form.

Under sunlight, the solar cells provide the majority of the power; but indoors or on a cloudy day, the movement-based fibers pick up the slack, Wang said. (He was quick to add that you don’t need to flap your arms or do anything dramatic; the fibers will gather energy from small, normal movements.)

“Our idea is to try to use whatever is available, whenever it’s available,” he said.

Currently, the researchers have a roughly 225-square-centimeter (or 35-square-inch) patch of the energy-harvesting fabric; it seems to be roughly as flexible as woven straw. The scientists hope to get it down to the flexibility

of common cloth. The key to that, Wang said, is making the fibers even thinner: Currently they stretch from 15 to 20 centimeters long and about 2 millimeters wide. Once they reach about half a millimeter in width, they will be much more pliant, he added.

But that’s if you were to make a device entirely out of these fibers; theoretically, a few of these fibers could also be woven into any kind of textile, such as cotton, and offer some energy-harvesting benefits without sacrificing softness and flexibility, Wang said.

While the technology could allow users to charge phones and wearable devices, it could also make interactive garments (a gown with LED lights, for example) more feasible for fashion designers. The research could also prove useful for building flexible screens, designing heart and other health monitors, and may even find applications in robotics.

Before the technology gets there, however, Wang ticked off the items on his to-do list.

“There’s a lot of things to do: No. 1 is to get the fiber thinner, so more flexible,” he said. “No. 2 is to improve the durability or robustness, so they can last longer. And third is, we have to work on continuing to improve the performance. The more power, the better.”

WITH PRODUCER, PERISCOPE USERS CAN LIVE-STREAM PROFESSIONAL VIDEO FROM ANYWHERE

Since its launch in early 2015, Periscope has become a go-to app for live content. The Twitter-owned service has hosted live feeds of everything from concerts to breaking news such as the flooding currently happening on the East Coast. Despite the diversity of topics presented on the platform, every live video has had one thing in common: It was shot using a smartphone.

Now all that is changing with the launch of Periscope Producer, a new feature in the app that gives news organizations, individuals with their own web shows, and the rest of us the opportunity to stream video on Periscope from somewhere other than their smartphone. It positions service—which also feeds its streams to Twitter—as a stronger player in the growing live video space, and transforms the platform into a more useful tool for professional video creators.

"When when we launched Periscope over a year and a half ago our focus was almost exclusively mobile content," says Kayvon Beykpour, CEO of Periscope. "The idea with Producer is, we're taking a big step toward allowing any live broadcast, whether it's captured on a mobile device or otherwise, to be essentially be piped into Periscope and, vicariously, [to] Twitter."

PLUG IT IN, STREAM IT LIVE In order to work with Producer, a video just needs to be streamed online somewhere.

A link to that content—be it from a studio camera or just your computer's desktop—can be added within your Periscope settings as an additional source. Then it will replace the traditional stream from your smartphone's camera within the app. From there, you can start and stop a broadcast and interact with viewers just like any other Periscope.

During a press event, Beykpour showed a demo by Periscoper Alex Pettitt. With the help of a piece of software called OBS Studio, Pettitt was able to create an upperthird overlay where he displayed information about the topic he was talking about—similar to a TV news program—as well as display ads and switch seamlessly between content on his phone and desktop computer, all while maintaining a single Periscope broadcast.

And he’s not the only one who has been trying the feature out. Brands such as 70

Xbox, Univision, Disney, ABC News, and Fox have all been test-driving Producer over the past six weeks. You may have even seen a Producer broadcast. Louis Vuitton used it to broadcast its Fashion Week runway show live, and a number of news stations have used the platform to broadcast everything from on-scene coverage to simulcasts of their traditional news programs.

Twitter is doing deals to broadcast highprofile events such as the presidential debates and NFL games. Producer opens the door for others to live-stream professional-looking content on . And it can also be used to do things like live-stream gameplay from a console or mobile phone, or virtual reality content from a set of VR goggles.

"While we haven't announced anything publicly, we've been behind the scenes getting access to partners," Beykpour says.

"We've been working with partners to actually test out how the model works, how the quality of the video works, and all the mechanics around actually making a live stream not from a mobile device come to life."

While you can live-stream mobile gameplay

now, Beykpour suggests that in the future developers might choose to enable Periscopespecific game functionality. For instance, giving a heart to someone who is livestreaming a game of Flappy Bird might make the bird move faster, or typing "Bigger" in the comments might make the pipes in the game larger and harder to navigate.

"That kind of extends the boundary of what you can do in a live medium," says Beykpour.

"The reason why we started Periscope is not just for the novelty of being able to create a live broadcast; that’s interesting but it's been done before. What we found interesting was what can you do with a live audience when you have [a] synchronous group of people watching the broadcaster who can respond to that."

BEHIND THE CHARACTERS WITH GRAFFITI WRITER SPAZ

At just 23 years old, SPAZ grew a reputation within the Lebanese graffiti scene as the man behind the characters.

As his passion for graffiti grew, he utilized this medium to help him express himself.

When did it all begin? And how did you first become interested in street art/graffiti?

It all started in school, I used to doodle all the time.

During that time, I used to listen to hip-hop music and thought since rappers use words to express themselves and b-boys use dance to interpret their feelings, I would use graffiti for it was the easiest way for me to project my thoughts and feelings.

Having graffiti as a medium of expression felt like I was able to speak through painting the streets, especially since I felt part of this community, which makes me easily inspired.

Which artist/s influenced you?

I got influenced by old-school Bronx legends Cope2, Seen, Phase2 and Futura. From the new-school, there are many artists like Sofles, Hombre, Mr. Wany, Clogtwo and Katun to name a few.

What style is your work?

I like to create characters because I think everyone can easily understand the piece just by seeing it.

What is the source of your inspiration these days?

The people I hang out with, the nature that surrounds me, and random people socializing in the streets. It helps me come up with a character by looking at any shape I come across.

What do your pieces usually focus on?

When I do a piece it naturally varies from older ones I did. It’s all about the energy so it depends on the thing we are focusing and what is happening in the country since we're living in a place full of surprises.

What is the riskiest thing you have ever done?

By being a street artist you're always at risk. Once I was trespassing a yard late at night and ended up running out while being chased by 20 security dogs, I never thought I could run that fast.

Are you generally satisfied with your finished piece?

Most of the time I’m satisfied with the outcome, but every time I learn something new I apply it to the next piece I do.

Where is your work usually located?

All around Lebanon, specifically Beirut, but my aim is to go further and have my pieces abroad.

Do you find it difficult to work in the streets?

In Lebanon it is way easier to paint than other countries but since Lebanon is a diverse country, some people in the beginning believe that we are painting religious or political related artworks but their thoughts change when they see the final piece.

Others believe we are destroying the streets and is a form of vandalism.

Have you ever had any problems with authority cause of your work?

The same thing happens with authority, they tend to stop us while knowing that there is no law that bans doing graffiti on public properties, but I believe it is way easier in Lebanon than other countries.

Do you have a formal art education?

I graduated as a graphic designer and took a master’s degree in multimedia. Currently I am a freelance illustrator and graphic designer.

Would you rather paint alone? Or do you prefer collaborate with others?

Honestly I would rather paint with crews it’s better than painting alone. It’s more fun with my Rbk and Rek brothers and sister and other mates from ACK and BROS Crew. I have the chance to salute my brothers in paint: SUP-C, EXIST, FISH, KABRIT, EPS, MEUH, BAROK, RILE, WYTE, BOB, PHAT2, CHAD THE MAD, TAZ, ZED, MOE, BH and sister NUSH. What do you see as the future of street art / graffiti?

As we see in Lebanon the scene is evolving and getting bigger. More people are getting involved and it is better for the scene, since many people’s perceptions of graffiti have changed.

How do you feel about photographers / bloggers in the scene?

Nowadays they have a big role representing the real graffiti and street art scene, especially in the region since people are being open to this form of art in hope of understanding it better. It is important however to have the right message sent across that would not harm the scene.

PODIUM FINISH AND TITLE WIN FOR PORSCHE IN A HIGHLY FIA EMOTIONAL ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALE WEC,WORLD LMP1, ROUND 9, BAHRAIN, RACE For the second consecutive year, Porsche wins all in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC): victory in Le Mans, winning the manufacturers’ world championship in Shanghai and now again the drivers’ world championship at the finale in Bahrain. In the last of nine WEC rounds in 2016 Timo Bernhard (DE), Brendon Hartley (NZ) and Mark Webber (AU) came third, having started second on the grid with their Porsche 919 Hybrid. The new world champions, Romain Dumas (FR), Neel Jani (CH) and Marc Lieb (DE) only came sixth after contact with another car early in the race. The six-hour race started at 4 p.m. with ambient temperatures near 30 degrees Celsius. After the sun had set at 4:45 p.m., the air cooled down to 24 degrees.

How the race went for car number 1: Bernhard starts from second on the grid and lets Jani in the sister car pass him on the first lap. On lap 13, the number 7 Audi also overtakes him, Bernhard is fourth now. After 29 laps he hands over to Webber, who manages to improve to third by overtaking the number 5 Toyota on lap 43. Hartley jumps in after 59 laps, and after 89 laps Bernhard takes over until Hartley is back in the car after 120 laps. Bernhard once again jumps in after 150 laps, before finally, after 180 laps, Webber goes in to enjoy the final stint of his racing career. After a total of 201 laps he brings the 919 home in P3.

How the race went for car number 2: Jani improves on lap one from third to second. On lap 15 he is overtaken by the number 7 Toyota. Jani is third now in front of the sister Porsche.

After 28 laps he has his first pit stop and continues. One lap later he has contact with a GT car and has to stop again: the damaged tyre and rear bodywork is changed. Now the number 2 Porsche is one lap down. After 60 laps Dumas takes over, after 91 laps it is Lieb’s turn, after 122 laps Jani is back behind the wheel and after 153 laps it is Dumas again. Lieb climbs into the car for the final stint to cross the line some 20 minutes later after 198 laps and becomes a world champion.

I can only say thank you to all six drivers, every single team member and the Porsche board members, who have supported this program right from the beginning. stint after Timo and Mark had been driving went pretty cleanly. I had Kazuki Nakajima behind me and it was a bit tricky with the traffic, but it came out okay. Regarding the Audi, we were hoping to get closer when it was getting cooler, but it didn’t work out today. They deserved the victory in their last race. And for Mark and us it worked out, as we got onto the podium in his last race. We did our maximum today, and it is really very sad to see him go.”

Mark Webber (40, Australia): “I was the second and the last driver in the car today, and pretty happy with both stints. Early in the race, I

had a nice little fight with the number 5 Toyota. I managed to get passed him and tried to pull away, but we didn’t have enough pace to fight the Audi.

Then, for the final stint, it was pretty emotional putting my helmet on for the last time. I enjoyed the last stint and I got the chance to bring the car to the checkered flag for the top three finish, and this was the maxi-mum we could get today. It has been such an incredible three years for me with Porsche, together with Timo and Brendon and the whole team. Nothing is forever, I’m stopping at a good time and I’m looking forward to seeing everybody again soon.”

We had a little oversteer everywhere. But, because of the championship situation, we didn’t have to push. For us it was important to finish the race reliably and avoid any mistakes – I’m relieved it worked out.”

Neel Jani (32, Switzerland): “It was a promising race start. It was also hard work, because I frequently got into traffic in the worst places, but the strategy and the first pit stop went very 80

well. Then when I was on my out lap a GT car just hit me, which caused damage to a rear tyre and bodywork. After the repairs the car wasn’t great anymore and we had no chance to close the huge gap to the front. All we could do was hope the number 6 Toyota would not win and make sure that we would not take any risks on track.”

Marc Lieb (36, Ludwigsburg): “For me it went pretty smoothly, and I was just carrying the car round the track. Since the hit when Neel was driving early in the race, the steering wheel wasn’t straight anymore. Our 919 wasn’t in the

best shape in the end, but we rolled it home, and we just made it.”

As the weather cools down and we greet winter with open arms, our food choices get – cozier, to put it nicely. Gone are the days of leafy salads and citrus dressings to go with the scorching hot weather. No one cares about tanning anymore, all we want to do is to don huge sweaters and a steaming bowl of something delicious to highlight the tastiness of the season: Eat, sleep, snuggle up in your sweater, repeat.

Which brings us to our next point. Packing on pounds in wintertime is inevitable, but if you’re going to do it, make it with optimum taste. That’s exactly what we took away from our Eats In discovery, Nomad Bistro, and believe us when we say that every calorie was worth it.

So – who’s tried this tiny place? And why have none of you ever told us about it before?

It’s amazing! But before I get too excited, gather ye round and I’ll tell you all about the deliciousness we tucked into.

Since only four of us were around that day, our order was simple: two Nomad Burgers, one Portobello Parmigana and a Shrimp Mac ‘n’ Cheese – as well as a quintessential order of fries, please!

As we sat patiently and waited for our food, we cruised the menu further, trying to figure this place out. Like its name suggests, it seems to offer different dishes hailing from different parts 82

of the world: from a Singaporean Kale Salad, to a Mexican Barbacoa Taco, to a Japanese inspired Brisket Donbouri bowl, to name a few.

The characteristic each dish on offer seems to share, however, is that they all fall under the category of comfort food. Just what we need as we start shivering and turning up the heat in our offices, cars and homes – a bit of comfort!

The food arrives, and it’s still hot – which is a huge plus in our book. With that, we dig into our respective dishes, and the ravings thus commence.

What poetry can we write about the Nomad Burger? First of all, if you are a burgerholic who finds the thicker patty a blasphemous element, then look away. I, for one, preach the opposite – and this patty is so nicely thick, it gives the euphemism “meat-mountain” a whole new meaning! Seasoned with a natural flavoring that can only be achieved from homemade construction, this patty only heightens the experience the burger brings, escalating its potential from “good” to “ridiculously good”.

Complimented beautifully with fried cheese, crisp bacon and caramelized onions, the overall taste is nostalgic and filling. And don’t even get us started on the pillow-soft potato bun soaking in the juices the contents of the sandwich, allowing you to relive the ecstasy of taste with every bite.

The Portobello Parmigiana is perfect for those who want to indulge responsibly without going overboard. Presented in the form of a singular, juicy Portobello mushroom, this dish comes encrusted in a light breading throughout the base and oozes with delicious, fresh

parmesan cheese and a beautifully spiced Pomodoro sauce. Don’t be fooled by its size, as this baby is more than just an appetizer – it will indeed leave you satisfied!

And lest we forget, the unexpected Shrimp Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Many may feel apprehensive towards this dish, as its unlikely pairing seems unorthodox. But think about it – lobster mac ‘n’ cheese is a thing, so why can’t shrimp be substituted? The nice thing about this dish, besides its consistent stringiness and the tang of parmesan baked in with the breadcrumb topping, is its creaminess melded in with the satisfying bite of shrimp, lingering within the casserole when you least expect it. Shrimp isn’t an overpowering taste in this dish, it only adds to it! Trust me – this mac ‘n’ cheese will meet your standards and remind you that you CAN have a bit of fun with the classics in even the most adventurous of ways.

Nomad bistro exudes fun. From its eclectic, albeit small, menu selection, right down to the packaging of the items that make us nothing short of curious as to how the ambiance of their physical location in Sharq fares. Judging by the colorful, nomadic inspired motifs on the cartons containing their goods, we have a feeling it’s indeed as cozy as the food was!

THE RIGHT WAY TO DISCUSS YOUR FAILURES IN A JOB INTERVIEW

In interviewing hundreds of people, I’ve found that the way a candidate answers one key question tells me more about them than any other. I'll usually wait until the candidate has relaxed somewhat and begins to open up. Then, about halfway through the interview, I'll ask, "What has been a moment of significant professional disappointment or failure, and what caused it?"

Do they focus on a lost promotion, or a failed project? Do they make it about themselves, or about their company?

By asking what caused the failure, the question doesn't require an applicant to take responsibility for it, though they might choose to. In my experience, these are three types of answers I typically hear—with some responses earning better marks than others.

THE NON-FAILURE FAILURE I once spent too much time on a project because I refused to hand over something that I couldn’t be proud of.

This is the answer that induces silent yawns from hiring managers. It's a candidate’s attempt to convey a strength wrapped in the veneer of a weakness. You'll often get this answer from people early in their careers who aren't yet comfortable with the idea that failure and weakness are part of any job.

If a candidate who's still early in their career answers this way, I’ll often give them a second chance: "That could also be interpreted as a moment of strength and having high standards.

Do you have another example?"

If the candidate is more experienced, though, this answer worries me. It implies they still haven’t learned to be comfortable with their own shortcomings. Acknowledging your weaknesses is critical to making career progress—you first need to know when you mess up and then think critically about why.

So as an interviewer, if you can only get a "non-failure failure" from a candidate, it may be time to move on.

THE BLAME-IT-ON-OTHERS DISAPPOINTMENT I once was due for a promotion, but my manager didn’t give it to me because there was another candidate who was my boss’s favorite.

This answer upsets me the most. It shows that the candidate doesn’t focus quite enough on the things that are actually within in their control, choosing instead to rationalize their disappointments by putting responsibility on 84

someone or something else.

This type of employee may not be looking (or ready) to grow outside their current role; they're simply expecting to get promoted just for doing their job and nothing more.

But not necessarily. Sometimes life is really is unfair. Maybe they were slighted! While this might be true, when you're hiring, you want to find people who view any situation as an opportunity to assess how they might've done things differently to achieve a better outcome— even if they weren't at fault. You want people who put the burden of responsibility on themselves, even if others may share in it, too. These are likely to be the hires who will surprise you by going above and beyond.

COMPLETE OWNERSHIP I was once working on a project, and the client hated the result. I realized that I could've put more effort into the project and worked to better understand their needs up front. It taught me a lot about my approach to kicking off new projects going forward.

This is the ideal answer. When someone says this, I often have to stifle a grin.

Make no mistake: There are multiple people or systems at fault in pretty much any failure situation. The point isn't to ask a jobseeker to pretend otherwise; in this example, it's more than likely that the client didn't do a perfect job of explaining what they wanted, or maybe they changed the scope of the project after it started.

Even so, it's still critical for a candidate to take

complete ownership of a problem. That's the starting point for finding any workable solution.

When you're hiring, you want to find people who view any situation as an opportunity to assess how they might've done things differently.

Second, they're the ones who are most likely to improve their own skills by choice. Rather than waiting for formal training, they spend their downtime teaching themselves the ins and outs of a new marketing technology, for instance, or how to program in a new language. They're passionate, and they're problem solvers. They realize their own potential and constantly pursue a better version of themselves.

Finally, taking complete ownership of your failures shows you're someone who avoids politics. Rather then expending emotional energy complaining about other team members, these people realize their own ability to influence a situation and address interpersonal issues head-on.

So while it may seem a little reductive, try testing out this interview question as a hiring manager. It may help you build a team of people who shirk petty politics and are always striving to improve their own skills. And if you're a job seeker and an interviewer asks you to discuss your failures, don't hold back—own up to what went wrong and how the experience taught you to switch up your approach. That just may improve your chances that the interview itself will turn out a success.

KUWAIT ASSOCIATION FOR LEARNING DIFFERENCES Interview with Chairman Mrs. Amaal Al Sayyer By bazaar staff

Established in 2007 by Chairman Mrs. Amaal Al Sayyer, the Kuwait Association for Learning Differences (KALD) came to being with help from volunteers and funding by Masharaee Al Khair and Kuwait Projects Company (Holding). A social welfare association, KALD collaboratively works towards helping all individuals, especially students in private schools in Kuwait, who have learning differences (LD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Through setting up awareness programs, training courses, and other educational activities, KALD has provided a solution to many who had given up in the past.

Rather than labeling the students as those with learning difficulties, KALD members have agreed on the term ‘learning difference’. Simply put, KALD believes that the targeted students are intelligent people and the only difference between them and other students is that they have their own way of learning – thus a difference, and not a difficulty. Over the last few years, KALD has held a Distinguished Teachers Award that acknowledges those who teach children with learning difficulties/differences in both public and private schools and presents that best teacher, according to certain criteria, with a monetary and nonmonetary award. We chatted with KALD’s Chairman, Mrs. Amaal Al Sayyer to learn more about KALD, the award and future plans.

What first motivated you to establish KALD? In 1999 my son was diagnosed with ADHD. In spite of his intelligence and lovely character, his KG teachers chose to focus on his hyperactivity which annoyed them. As a result, he was kicked out of school at the age of three. Watching him prepare his small bag for the next school day broke my heart. Unfortunately, this scenario was repeated in elementary school: He was suspended from school and had to stay home for three months.

Fighting for my son’s right to get an education that accommodated his needs opened my eyes to a scary fact that my son is not alone in this predicament. I vowed then to do something that would help the large number of children and families that are suffering silently.

In brief, what are learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

Learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math.

They can also interfere with higher level skills such as organization, time management, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory and attention.

ADHD is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with function or development.

What is KALD’s mission?

KALD strives to be the leading institution capable of creating a difference in the lives and education of students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD in private schools in Kuwait.

Those two conditions are related since out of every 10 students with a learning disability, 2 of them have ADHD and of every 10 students with ADHD, 2 of them have a learning disability.

What do you think is the greatest misconception that people in Kuwait have about students with learning differences?

Many people think that students with learning differences are mentally challenged. In fact, the IQ test is the first step in identifying them; they should have average or above average intelligence. Thomas Edison, Richard Branson, Steven Spielberg are examples of geniuses with learning differences.

How does the KALD Distinguished Teachers Award make a difference to KALD’s greater mission?

Good teachers can make a difference not only in their students’ education but also in their lives and future. Alexander The Great once said, “I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.” Students with LD and ADHD are intelligent people who need passionate, qualified teachers to help them utilize their points of strength and achieve success.

What makes this award special?

We like to consider the award as the jewel in the crown of KALD’s activities that aim at fulfilling its mission for many reasons. First, it was launched with the blessings of His Highness, the Amir. The Award ceremony takes place under his patronage.

Second, the award is the first of its kind in the Arab world. It celebrates the teachers who are dedicated to students with LD and ADHD. Third, it gives us the chance to show our gratitude to the expiates who left their countries to come to Kuwait and help the development of education in our country.

What’s next for KALD? To join efforts with the government and establish a center for the development of education for students with learning differences in private schools in Kuwait, is a goal we would like to achieve. THE ART OF NINA BERRY

An Instagram video shows a woman holding a hair dryer and some crayons in her hand. You’d never think that those two things have something in common, or that it is possible to create anything by using the two together. But as Nina puts the hair dryer near the crayons they begin to spray their hue on a white canvas in a pattern you’d never think was possible. Moments later, there is a white unicorn on that canvas bordered by the hues of the crayons.

If you think that’s amazing, more than 140,000 viewers of that video would happily agree with you.

You would expect that a Kuwaiti artist with thousands of followers on social media and hundreds of thousands of views for some of her videos would be all ego, but Nina, who excels at balancing between her work as an artist and her responsibilities as an accounting student in AUM, makes you feel like you are speaking to the nicest and most down to earth person in the country.

“Nina is my nickname. It’s what my friends used to call me in high school. My real name is Anwar Dashti, and berry is just a random word." After explaining the meaning behind her username on Instagram, @berry_ninaa, Nina continued to explain the reason why most of her drawings seem to be of DC and Marvel heroes, “I got into comics when I was young. I like anime, but I’m not a fan. As for games, I played some PlayStation… a year ago.”

Her quirky answers complement her professional demeanor. She mentioned Pikachu as her favorite anime which, if you watch anime, would put a smile on your face. But despite Nina’s simple take on things her take on art and life is far from simple, “Society doesn’t take the arts seriously so I study accounting to become an accountant. I’ll keep drawing as on the side, but my degree is what matters the most.”

That statement was particularly shocking not only because of how mature it is but also since artists usually take pride in dedicating themselves completely to their art. While Nina posseses a powerful imagination that is capable of filling the many canvases of those who commission her for work, she keeps a realistic look at life and the future.

It makes you wonder; how can someone go so far with such a simple and realistic take on life?

Usually it is the risk takers who gain the kind of success Nina has gained with her work. But in her case it wasn’t risk but rather being herself that got her there.

“If you want to succeed just be yourself. Be unique. There are those who just follow trends and do what other people do that won’t get you 88

anywhere.” Nina has earned the right to say that.

After all, her thoughtful art is anything but usual and that’s what made her go from 2,000 followers to over 10,000 in around one year. “Using unique techniques in creating my art instead of traditional methods is what differentiates me from others.

My most requested paintings are ones with lights installed underneath them,” she explains.

The execution of her art isn’t the only thing that is thoughtful and unique but the philosophy behind it is just as meaningful, “I don’t do it for the income or the attention, I do it because seeing my art hanging on the walls of the homes of my fans means the world to me.”

Despite her positive attitude and thoughtful art she still has to deal with bad people in some occasions. Not only from comments, but from commissions as well. “I had problems with

commissions when it comes to boys.” However, she deals with it the same way she deals with everything else; with a simple approach, “I just ignore them.”

You can commission Nina with a direct message on Instagram and if you wish to meet her then you just might see her at one of the many conventions happening in the country. “I’m thinking of participating in one of those conventions in the future,” she says, “I wanted to join an art competition once, but missed it. Maybe next time.”

Interview with Mijbil Alayoub, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Ooredoo Kuwait By bazaar staff

Mijbil Alayoub currently holds the position of Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Ooredoo Kuwait.

Alayoub has more than 20 years of experience in different establishments such as the Ministry of Information, The Scientific Center, EQUATE, Zain Group, and the Kuwait Fund for the Advancement of Sciences. Alayoub holds a degree in mass communications from Northeastern University in Boston.

Today, he leads one of the most active corporate communications departments in Kuwait. The corporate communications department handles public relations, internal communications, crisis communications, social media, corporate social responsibility, and sponsorships. He spoke to bazaar about how he manages such an active team with diverse functions.

In a nutshell, how would you describe what your department in the company does?

Our role is to communicate all messages to our internal and external customers and relevant stakeholders. Our internal communication team ensures that all key messages are communicated clearly to our employees, ensuring that they are up to date with our latest achievements, policies, products and services. Our public relations team conveys these messages in all external media channels, traditional and otherwise, in addition to managing and enhancing the reputation of the organization.

Our social media team manages the interactive social media channels. Our corporate social responsibility and sponsorships department is tasked with translating our company’s vision, mission, and brand core values into tangible initiatives, ensuring that it supports important initiatives for the communities that we interact with.

How do you handle such a diverse number of tasks within your department?

We have developed proper roles and responsibilities for each member of the team.

In addition to the development and adherence to policies, procedures and processes that govern all corporate communications activities.

I’m proud of my department’s team members, all of whom are passionate and dedicated Kuwaiti nationals. I believe that our youth have what it takes to become achievers if given the right support and empowerment.

My management style is a translation of that vision, and it focuses on mentorship, where I lead by example. I include my team members in all important decision making, and I encourage them to speak up their mind and contribute with ideas and suggestions.

Ooredoo strongly believes in the talent and abilities of Kuwait’s youth; we continuously invest in our employees, and have ongoing training courses in cooperation with reputable institutes with international standards, both inside and outside Kuwait. This is to ensure that all employees are up to date with the latest technologies and international trends. In that regards, all employees in Ooredoo are treated equally regardless of their gender. Ooredoo Kuwait also benefits from the exchange of experience between different departments within its operating companies.

What is the main objective of your social media channel?

We’re proud to have created an environment for the team which is conducive to innovation and free-thinking. Many management traditionalists see this as a threat or a loss of control and power – I view it as a means to ensure creativity, compatibility and cohesiveness.

Our social media channels are some of the fastest-growing in Kuwait, where we do more

than just promoting products. We have a team dedicated to answering customers’ queries and solving their problems on all our social media channels. We also actively create competitions and contests for our online audience to ensure engagement.

What were your key partnerships on the corporate social responsibility front in recent years?

We were fortunate enough to establish connections and partnerships with many reputable organizations across Kuwait. We have recently signed a memorandum of understating with the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs, which further fortifies our tie with the ministry’s goals and youth development initiatives, stemming from our deep-rooted belief in the importance of investing in youth.

We had a number of other respectable partners such as Al Nouri Charity Society, with which we worked with to distribute aide to Syrian refugee camps in Jordan. We also have a successful partnership with Spread the Passion, with which we established our Ooredoo volunteer program. This program succeeded in attracting hundreds of Kuwaiti youth, giving them training on essential skills necessary for volunteering before matching them with volunteering opportunities.

We have also partnered with Murouj for this year’s season of Murouj Market, which is an

outdoor entrepreneurs market taking place at their unique venue. It features a wide range of projects such as handcrafts, food, accessories, art, among other projects, all of which are established by Kuwaiti entrepreneurs. Our social responsibility agenda is year-round, and places great importance on empowering youth, enabling women and supporting entrepreneurs with a focus on sustainability.

Ooredoo Kuwait is one of three telecom providers in a highly competitive market. What sets you apart from competition in Kuwait?

The telecom sector in Kuwait is very challenging and dynamic. In general, telecom is one of the fastest developing sectors around the world.

This is especially true in Kuwait and the GCC region, where most customers are tech-savvy and demand international trends to be available in the local market. The challenge today is to keep up with the expectations of customers, providing services and solutions that suit their needs.

I’m very fortunate to be working in such a dynamic and challenging environment. Ooredoo Kuwait is part of the international Ooredoo Group, and ranks among the Middle East's leading companies in terms of investment in its network. We’re continuously working to enrich our network even further in order to meet the demands of our customers and give them a

truly enriching experience on our network.

Our network in Kuwait is currently undergoing an infrastructure upgrade that began in late 2014 and is scheduled to complete by 2017.

Our aim from this is to deploy the latest technologies in order to give our customers the best in-class services.

Currently, our LTE network sites cover 100% of the residential areas of Kuwait, and our LTE-A high-speed internet covers over 80% of Kuwait’s residential areas.

What are the effects of the network renovation so far?

Our network development project had significant impact on our network speed. We recently won the title “Speedtest Awards Winner 2016” by Ookla, the company that operates the famous website Speedtest.net, a tool that measures network speed on users’ devices. The awards are based on speed test results conducted by hundreds of thousands of actual smartphone users in Kuwait.

We’re proud of this achievement, which reiterates our belief in our values of caring, connecting and challenging. We have adopted a very customer-centric policy in recent years to enrich their experience and fulfil their needs, and this policy translates in all our efforts and strategies.

We regularly benchmark our services in relation to all competition, and results have indicated that our network scores higher than

the competition in terms of speed. The tests were conducted in various locations and under different conditions across Kuwait to better measure the network’s strength.

What other achievements have you had this year?

We have proudly obtained the latest ISO 9001:2015 certification by UKAS through Bureau Veritas Kuwait. This certification adds to our continuous efforts to maintain internationallyrecognized standards in line with our quality management system. We’re proud to be the first Kuwaiti telecom go get such certification from UKAS. Going forward, we strive to continue improvement initiatives through the application of best internationally-proven practices in every aspect possible. This of course aims to ensure smooth operations and processes within the company, to offer our customers with the best inclass customer experience.

From the grills, the Chicken Skewers were tender and flavorful, grilled to perfection and served with a side of tortilla bread and garlic mayo. We also went with their Chicken Fajita and Shrimp Fajita –

in a word, delicious! Flawlessly sizzling and ready to be wrapped, the chicken and shrimp are prepared with sautéed mixed capsicums and onions. Served with flour tortillas, the fajitas come with several sides: mixed cheese, guacamole, sour cream and The Kitchen’s special fajita dip.

Satisfied with the grills, we turned our attention to the pasta dishes. Their Penne Arrabbiata is simple but comes with a flavorful kick. The Arrabbiata sauce is delicate and medium spiced and added to the al dente penne pasta, then finished with a generous helping of parmesan.

The second pasta we got was the Pappardelle Chicken with Creamy Parmesan. The ribbons of pasta combined with the smooth, light parmesan cream sauce is then finished with slices of grilled chicken. And with that, our feast had come to an end proving to us that no one does home-cooked meals like The Kitchen!

The singer and new dad also wrote a song titled "Right By You (for Luna)" for the new light of his world, his daughter. For the forthcoming project, Legend teamed up with producers John Ryan (One Direction, Jason Derulo) and Blake Mills, who produced Alabama Shakes' Sound & Color.

The French synth master’s first seminal work, Oxygene was a huge commercial success and has since gone down as one of the most influential ambient electronic albums of all time. The second part of the trilogy Oxygène 7–13, was released 20 years later in 1997. Now, during the recording of his last album Electronica Vol 2: The Heart Of Noise, Jarre was inspired to complete the three-part epic in just six weeks: ‘’I did the first Oxygene on an 8-track tape recorder with very few instruments, with no other choice than being minimalist. I tried to keep this minimalist approach for Oxygene 3.”

Back in March, Libertines frontman Peter Doherty said he was putting the “finishing touches” on his latest record, the follow-up to 2009’s Grace/ Wastelands. It was recorded over six months in Hamburg, with Johann Scheerer on production.

The first single, “The Whole World is Our Playground,” was released in April for Record Store Day. Before that, Doherty shared his tribute to Amy Winehouse, “Flags of the Old Regime”.

The record also features “Hell To Pay At The Gates Of Heaven,” a song written in light of the Paris attacks, which Doherty debuted last June.

It's official: The Rolling Stones will put out their first studio record in over a decade in December with the release of new album Blue & Lonesome.

Keith Richards said in September that the group had been recording in London, cutting several songs in a rapid period. "It was fun – always is," he said. At the time, he claimed the album would contain "a lot of Chicago blues." Later in the month, Mick Jagger posted a photo of his harmonica case and some guitar picks on Twitter, using the hashtag #PlayingTheBlues.

When the Weeknd and Daft Punk got together in the studio, the result was Starboy, the synth-laden, spicey-lyric smash. It just so happens, there’s more where that came from. The Toronto-born, multiple Grammy-winning R&B artist (real name Abel Tesfaye) and the enigmatic French electronic duo (Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter) hit it off in the studio to create not just one but a pair of new works, including the title track for Tesfaye’s forthcoming album Starboy.

“The remarkably spontaneous sessions yielded two songs on the album,” the Weeknd stated.

Although Young has spent the past few years on the road performing with Promise of the Real, the rocker recorded Peace Trail alongside a stripped-down outfit featuring drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Paul Bushnell at Rick Rubin's Shangri-la Studios. The album will also feature the previously released Dakota Access Pipeline protest song "Indian Givers." "AM radio kicked streaming's ass. Analog cassettes and 8 tracks also kicked streaming's ass, and absolutely rocked compared to streaming," Young wrote previously in July 2015.

It’s also completely free.

Ivy is a sidebar app that allows you to quickly see your apps. You can have it launch from either the left or right side depending on your preferences.

It is also customizable to suite your individual tastes. On top of that, the app has an RSS feature that can show you news across the bottom of the screen. The RSS feature could use some work, but it could be useful for general stuff. The app itself still needs a bit of work because there are some bugs. On the plus side, it is free to download if you want to check it out.

Marsbot is the latest app out of the developers of Foursquare. It’s a chat bot that recommends places for you to go. Unlike Google Assistant, which resides in Google Allo for most people, Marsbot resides in a text conversation. That means you can use it with whatever SMS app you happen to be using. The app itself will keep an eye on your location so it can recommend the right things. It’s a fairly big drain on the battery if left up to its own devices, but it does work. It’s free to use if you’re into this sort of thing.

Sprayscape is an interesting camera app. The central premise is you have a blank sphere. You then take pictures of your surroundings and it fits into the blank sphere. You wash, rinse, and repeat until the sphere is filled in. There are a number of commands that allow you to fill in the sphere as you see fit. Some people love it, others hate it, but it’s a ton of fun to use once you get passed the bugs. It’s completely free to use if you’re interested.

After the creepy clowns phenomenon swept across the globe over the past few months of course someone was going to make a game about it. To be honest this killer clown craze is probably one of the stupidest ones to hit the internet since planking was a thing. Obviously following on from this utterly terrifying and sensationally stupid sensation, the aim of the game is to get as far as you can by jumping on disappearing bars, cars, and people to get extra points. If you touch the floor however you're dead – so it's kind of like a horrible clown game mixed with 'the floor is lava'.

Mixing classic style with modern components, the Dodge Shakedown Challenger is a unique hot rod that's more than the sum of its parts. Underneath the slightly modified 1971 Challenger body lies a modern 6.4L HEMI engine from Mopar, delivering 485 hp to the road via a six-speed transmission.

The custom suspension is lowered, yet still makes room for the SRT Hellcat 19- and 20-inch wheels, the headlamps and taillamps come from a 2017 Challenger, and the interior has up-to-date gauges with front seats and a steering wheel taken from a Dodge Viper. The concept is clad in "Bitchin' Black" with satin black details.

Offered from the collection of Japanese collector Tad Soto, this Nikon 1 Vintage Camera isn't just "vintage": it's the earliest known surviving production Nikon in the world. Just the third ever made — it dates to April, 1948 — it's in remarkably good condition, arriving with its original Nikkor-H 2/5cm lens and matching cap. Industrial designer Charles Bombardier is known for his outlandish, imaginative designs. The Seataci Concept Yacht is no different. Dreamed up on a trip to Bora-Bora, it has a main hull that can submerge itself using a ballast system, giving passengers inside outstanding underwater views. It would also use a novel propulsion system: a biomimetic oscillating foil that would push water back like a whale's tail, offering greater efficiency while allowing the vessel to operate in shallower waters.

Other notable features would include a dozen onboard villas, a main deck with tropical gardens and pool, and a pair of landing pads meant for personal drones, used for travel to and from nearby islands.

Google's G Suite of online tools like Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Drive are designed with collaboration in mind. Yet there's one central point of office collaboration they have yet to touch: the whiteboard. The Google Jamboard is meant to fix this. A 55-inch 4K touchscreen, it links up a companion app running on iOS or Android, letting co-workers see a real-time feed of the board and add their own notes, doodles, and photos. You interact with the board using a passive stylus or your hand, it can change your writing into searchable text and straighten out your shapes and symbols automatically, and everything gets saved up to Google Drive, so Dave from accounting has no excuse when he claims not to remember what you talked about at the last meeting.

Food dreams coming to life at Debs El Reman By bazaar staff

Can you believe that such a little place would house so much magic? With a name paying homage to one of the Levant’s favorite ingredient staples, Pomegranate Molasses, Debs El Reman delivers the promise of taking you back to memories spent in rural areas of Lebanon, eating amazing food in a cozy atmosphere.

Nestled within the “basement” level of the outdoor Miral complex in Mahboula, this intimate eatery might be missed between the hustle and bustle of other options available. But not with its vibrant signage! The aquamarine blending with a rosy pomegranate and artful text allow diners to come in with open arms and to settle into the equally colorful and comfortable interior of the place.

Adorned with seating boasting communal simplicity, knick knacks of jars lining the walls along with traditional Levantine style jugs and 110

the soft crooning of the beloved Fairuz playing the background. Anyone hailing from the fertile crescent will feel like they’re at home, stepping into their grandmother’s house and about to enjoy a meal of their lifetime.

The menu is a storybook in itself, with so many options to choose from. Starting with drinks, I was greeted with not one, but two different concoctions to try. A classic Jullab with lovely pistachios floating atop, and a rosewater cocktail decorated with pretty petals and took me back to the mountains of Lebanon with just one sip. Served in mason jars for a modern touch, both were refreshing and enjoyable.

And then, as though my grandmother was in the room, a plate of something marvelous was placed before me. “Shawarma Baklava, ma’am,” the waiter announced proudly. Taken aback, as the two regional favorites are scarcely even spoken of in the same sentence, I was intrigued. And there it was – the first crunch that made me realize that this was my new

favorite way to eat shawarma. Encased in the crunchy dough that is usually used for syrupy sweet baklawa, chunks of tender shawarma meat were expertly filled and accompanied by a classic breadless fattouch salad. Drizzed with the quintessential tahini sauce, this was truly a treat not to be forgotten.

A fusion inspired salad was then presented: Halloumi Deyay (chicken) Salad – yet again, an unlikely combination. It works, though, especially with a pesto pairing and the careful, subtle grilling of the chicken. Expert tip: layer this salad on your fork as much as possible when eating, to really experience all the flavors – you won’t be disappointed.

Though I was itching to order my main, the chef had to grace me with one of the house specialties – a sample from their wood oven baked manakish. Served in the style of pizza, I was privileged to try both the Jebne Harra (cheese) AND the Sujok. If you’re judging my gluttony, I don’t care. They were both amazing,

giving me the best of both worlds: the presentation of Italian pizza, and the tastes of the Arab Meditterannean, reminding me that as this restaurant reaps, we aren’t so different from our neighbors at the opposite side of the sea after all.

This was reaffirmed when a Ftirit Bakleh in the style of an Italian Stromboli was placed before me. Filled with vegetables and presenting wonderfully doughy exterior, I took a bite, allowing the cheese to ooze and the taste of the tangy pomegranate molasses to engulf my palate as a reminder of why this place is named after the beloved Levantine nectar to begin with. Thumbs up, chef.

But then, just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it did. A little clay pot magically appeared without my consent – and boy, was it worth it. Filled to the brim with a ragout of sorts, containing succulent chunks of halloumi cheese, eggplant and - oh wow - kafta? I took a bite and realized I was in trouble. This

fusion dish reminiscent of Lebanon’s Turkish forefathers was so addictive, and gave my own mother’s kafta a run for her money. Don’t tell her I said that.

At this point, I was pleading for the food to stop, but was conflicted. It was all so good! So comforting! Fairuz herself was beckoning me to eat more with her soulful words dancing in the background, but I couldn’t.

I could, however, do with something sweet.

Halva Mousse, or Layale Lebnan? Why choose! I was gifted both, and after coming this far, I didn’t look back. With a bite of the reimagined, traditional Arabic sweet, using a perfect mold of creamy Halva (a sweet sesame paste sweet) encrusted with pistachio and dusted with sneaky chunks of Turkish delight and homemade pomegranate sugar, I was in heaven. Then, I took a bite of the even creamier, fruit filled parfait that is Layale Lebnan, and I had reached absolute Nirvana.

Turkish coffee was the only way to end this

experience, and I half expected someone to pop up and offer to read my cup. They never did, but that’s alright. It was relaxing and authentic all the same.

Debs El Reman is an absolute example of a gem that should not be overlooked. Their menu is bursting with options from classic indulgent breakfasts, to light sandwiches, and reimagined, deconstructed Shaami favorites hailing from the lands of Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Turkey. This is indeed a beautiful experience and with a touch of the right music and even just one or two of your favorite people, it’s sure to make your list of go-to places.

Believe me when I say, city dwellers: it’s worth the visit.

WHY I WOULD CHOOSE OLD TECH OVER NEW By bazaar staff

Last month saw the release of two ‘new’ consoles. I say new but these consoles are three decades apart. We have the PS4 Pro (KD 130) and the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) Classic (KD 20). If you offered me a choice of one, for free, I’d choose the NES. Or I’d take the PS4 Pro, sell it and buy 6 NES Classics, but the point remains, the Nintendo would be my preference.

The NES Classic is a miniature version of (arguably) the godfather of games consoles, the NES from the 80s. We covered it briefly in bazaar Tech in the September issue, and now it’s released!

It comes preloaded with 30 classic games (mostly killer, a few filler) and connects to HDTV via HDMI. It also has the option to save game progress as you play, like modern gaming and a luxury we never had as kids.

The NES Classic sold out instantly once launched, although to be fair that was half down to the awesomeness of the product, and half down to Nintendo’s ridiculous practice of not providing anywhere near enough units to meet demand. This seems to be an ongoing trend for Nintendo, and it makes no sense, especially for a company that hates the idea of others making money from their products (NES Classics are on eBay for anywhere up to $1000 (KD 330) at the time of writing this.

The PS4 Pro is an upgrade to the unstoppable PS4. It has some extra power under the hood, and now runs and improved and full resolution on 4K TVs, as well as provides better support for the newly released PSVR. So who on earth would chose 30-year-old technology over shiny new, all singing, all dancing, all immersing 2016 gadgetry? Well, to reiterate the title of this article…me. I would.

And it isn’t just a case of preferring retro games to new ones, because as much as I do love me some games from yesteryear, I actually prefer new games. For one thing, if you already own a PS4, there is very little reason to spend the asking price on a PS4 Pro now. Its main draw is that it works with 4K TVs. But the issue with this is that not that many people own a 4K TV. The prices are coming down and I’d guess within the next five years, 4K TV will have replaced our standard HDTVs that we currently have. But that’s a long way from now. Even if you do have a 4K TV, not all games will get this 4K upgrade. That depends on the developer of each game, and if they want to bother making an update especially for the PS4 Pro. If they do, it comes to the console via a downloadable patch. So it’s really hit and miss as to which games will benefit right now.

Regarding the PSVR support-if you don’t know yet or can’t admit it, VR is a gimmick, in gaming at least. Something cool to try out, or show friends when they come over, but let’s face it, it isn’t how you’re going to be playing 95% of your games.

Plus, PSVR still works with PS4 so again, no real reason to upgrade. It seems as if Sony rushed it out to be ahead of the Xbox Scorpio. Tech too ahead of its time, in my opinion.

On the other hand, with the NES Classic, you have tech that’s way behind. It should stay in the 80s because we have advanced so far now, but we brought it back because NOSTALGIA! Of course, it isn’t made of the same components that the original console was made from, but the games look and run the same. Also, as the games are preinstalled, you don’t get the ultimate feel of getting to blow the dust out of a cart, tap in on your knee for luck, insert and hope it works. It’s cheap, easy to use and fills us with memories of happier and simpler times. I, for one, can’t wait to let my future son or daughter discover it one day and ask what it is, so I can break it out and show them my childhood at the same time as creating a part of theirs. It’s a great gift for anyone even remotely interested in gaming, of any age.

Needless to say, I pre-ordered mine months ago and now, amid the thousands of unlucky ones that can’t find one for love nor money, mine arrived and I’m loving it!

At this time when technology is racing ahead and beyond of what we actually need, it’s nice to have the option of going back in time to appreciate what we once considered groundbreaking, and pay homage to the things that gave rise to the items we take for granted today.

PORSCHE CENTRE KUWAIT SUPPORTS RUNQ8 INITIATIVE Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company, partnered with RunQ8 for its annual charity initiative organized by the Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI), a non-profit, healthcare institution. The event which took place on Saturday 12th November, helped raise funds to support the treatment and care of children with disabilities referred for rehab at FSRI’s Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Centre (CERC).
